We consider the compactification of the 6d N=(2,0) theories, or equivalently of M-theory 5-branes, on a punctured Riemann surface times a circle. This gives rise to what we call 3d N=4 Sicilian theories, and we find that their mirror theories are star-shaped quiver gauge theories. We also discuss an alternative construction of these 3d theories through 4d N=4 SYM on a graph, which allows us to obtain the 3d mirror via 4d S-duality.
Certain star shaped quivers exhibit a pattern of symmetry enhancement on the Coulomb branch of $3d$ $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric gauge theories. This paper studies a subclass of theories where such global symmetry enhancement occurs through a computation of the Highest Weight Generating Function (HWG) and of the corresponding Hilbert Series (HS), providing a further test of the Coulomb branch formula. This special subclass has a feature in which the HWG takes a particularly simple form, as a simple rational function which is either a product of simple poles (termed freely generated) or a sim…
We evaluate the Coulomb branch Hilbert series of mirrors of three dimensional Sicilian theories, which arise from compactifying the $6d$ $(2,0)$ theory with symmetry $G$ on a circle times a Riemann surface with punctures. We obtain our result by gluing together the Hilbert series for building blocks $T_{\mathbfρ}(G)$, where $\mathbfρ$ is a certain partition related to the dual group of $G$, which we evaluated in a previous paper. The result is expressed in terms of a class of symmetric functions, the Hall-Littlewood polynomials. As expected from mirror symmetry, our results agree at genus zero…
In theories without known Lagrangian descriptions, knowledge of the global symmetries is often one of the few pieces of information we have at our disposal. Gauging (part of) such global symmetries can then lead to interesting new theories, which are usually still quite mysterious. In this work, we describe a set of tools that can be used to explore the superconformal phases of these theories. In particular, we describe the contribution of such non-Lagrangian sectors to the NSVZ beta-function, and elucidate the counting of marginal deformations. We apply our techniques to N=1 theories obtained…
We study the mirror symmetry of abelian 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories with mixed Chern-Simons levels by turning them into $\mathcal{T}_{A,N}$ theories that are defined as $N$ copies of $U(1)-[1]$ theory coupled together by mixed Chern-Simons levels $k_{ij}$. We find that $\mathcal{T}_{A,N}$ theories have many mirror dual theories with different mixed CS levels and FI parameters. As an example, we analyze $U(1)_k+ N_C \,\mathbf{C} + N_{AC} \, \mathbf{AC}$ theories by transforming these theories into certain $\mathcal{T}_{A,N}$ theories and find many equivalent effective Chern-Simons levels. Final…
We study three dimensional gauge theories with N=2 supersymmetry. We show that the Coulomb branches of such theories may be rendered compact by the dynamical generation of Chern-Simons terms and present a new class of mirror symmetric theories in which both Coulomb and Higgs branches have a natural description in terms of toric geometry.
We present an identity relating the partition function of N=4 supersymmetric QED to that of its dual under mirror symmetry. The identity is a generalized Fourier transform. Many known properties of abelian theories can be derived from this formula, including the mirror transforms for more general gauge and matter content. We show that N=3 Chern-Simons QED and N=4 QED with BF-type couplings are conformal field theories with exactly marginal couplings. Mirror symmetry acts on these theories as strong-weak coupling duality. After identifying the mirror of the gauge coupling (sometimes called the …
Using a recently proposed duality for $U(N)$ supersymmetric QCD (SQCD) in three dimensions with monopole superpotential, in this paper we derive the mirror dual description of $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQCD with unitary gauge group, generalizing the known mirror dual description of abelian gauge theories. We match the chiral ring of the dual theories and their partition functions on the squashed sphere. We also conjecture a generalization for SQCD with orthogonal and symplectic gauge groups.
A recently introduced method for constructing marginal singular flows between distinct Landau--Ginzburg theories at fixed central charge is reviewed. The flows are constructed in an enlarged moduli space obtained by adding theories with zero central charge. This mechanism is used to construct flows between mirror pairs of string vacua described by N$=$2 superconformal Landau--Ginzburg fixed points. In contrast to previous methods this new construction of mirror theories does not depend on particular symmetries of the original theory. (Based in part on a talk presented at the Trieste Summer Wor…
We study N=1 four dimensional quiver theories arising on the worldvolume of D3-branes at del Pezzo singularities of Calabi-Yau threefolds. We argue that under local mirror symmetry D3-branes become D6-branes wrapped on a three torus in the mirror manifold. The type IIB (p,q) 5-brane web description of the local del Pezzo, being closely related to the geometry of its mirror manifold, encodes the geometry of 3-cycles and is used to obtain gauge groups, quiver diagrams and the charges of the fractional branes.
Recently, Kim and Imamura and Yokoyama derived an exact formula for superconformal indices in three-dimensional field theories. Using their results, we prove analytically the equality of superconformal indices in some U(1)-gauge group theories related by the mirror symmetry. The proofs are based on the well known identities of the theory of $q$-special functions. We also suggest the general index formula taking into account the $U(1)_J$ global symmetry present for abelian theories.
The Argyres-Douglas (AD) theories of type $(D_n,D_m)$, realized by type IIB geometrical engineering on a single hypersurface singularity, are studied. We analyze their conformal manifolds and propose the 3d mirror theories of all theories in this class upon reduction on a circle. A subclass of the AD theories in question that admits marginal couplings is found to be $\mathrm{SO}$ or $\mathrm{USp}$ gaugings of certain $D_p(\mathrm{SO}(2N))$ and $D_p(\mathrm{USp}(2N))$ theories. For such theories, we develop a method to derive this weakly-coupled description from the Newton polygon associated to…
Mirror symmetry has proven to be a powerful tool to study several properties of higher dimensional superconformal field theories upon compactification to three dimensions. We propose a quiver description for the mirror theories of the circle reduction of twisted $A_{2N}$ theories of class $\mathsf{S}$ in four dimensions. Although these quivers bear a resemblance to the star-shaped quivers previously studied in the literature, they contain unitary, symplectic and special orthogonal gauge groups, along with hypermultiplets in the fundamental representation. The vacuum moduli spaces of these quiv…
We investigate the distribution of field theories that arise from the low energy limit of flux vacua built on type IIB string theory compactified on the mirror quintic. For a large collection of these models, we numerically determine the distribution of Taylor coefficients in a polynomial expansion of each model's scalar potential to fourth order, and show that they differ significantly from potentials generated by random choices of such coefficients over a flat measure.
We compute supersymmetric indices to test mirror symmetry of three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ gauge theories and dualities of half-BPS enriched boundary conditions and interfaces in four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ Super Yang-Mills theory. We find the matching of indices as strong evidences for various dualities of the 3d interfaces conjectured by Gaiotto and Witten under the action of S-duality in Type IIB string theory.
We show that the Higgs branch of a four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory, with gauge and matter content summarised by an ADE quiver diagram, is identical to the generalised Coulomb branch of a four-dimensional superconformal strongly coupled gauge theory with ADE global symmetry. This equivalence suggests the existence of a mirror symmetry between the quiver theories and the strongly coupled theories.
We discuss non-trivial fixed points of the renormalization group with dual descriptions in $N=4$ gauge theories in three dimensions. This new duality acts as mirror symmetry, exchanging the Higgs and Coulomb branches of the theories. Quantum effects on the Coulomb branch arise classically on the Higgs branch of the dual theory. We present examples of dual theories whose Higgs/Coulomb branch are the ALE spaces and whose Coulomb/Higgs branches are the moduli space of instantons of the corresponding $ADE$ gauge group. In particular, we show that in three dimensions small $E_8$ instantons in strin…
We use brane configurations and SL(2,Z) symmetry of the type IIB string to construct mirror N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories in three dimensions. The mirror map exchanges Higgs and Coulomb branches, Fayet-Iliopoulos and mass parameters and U(1)R symmetries. Some quantities that are determined at the quantum level in one theory are determined at the classical level of the mirror. One such example is the complex structure of the Coulomb branch of one theory which is determined quantum mechanically. It is mapped to the complex structure of the Higgs branch of the mirror theory, which is determin…
We present M-theory compactifications on $K_3 \times K_3$ with membranes near the $A_n$ or $D_n$ singularities of the $K_3$ spaces. By realizing each of these compactifications in two different ways as type I' models with 2- and 6-branes, we explain the three-dimensional duality between gauge theories recently found by Intriligator and Seiberg. We also find new pairs of dual gauge theories, which we briefly describe.
Superconformal sigma models with Calabi--Yau target spaces described as complete intersection subvarieties in toric varieties can be obtained as the low-energy limit of certain abelian gauge theories in two dimensions. We formulate mirror symmetry for this class of Calabi--Yau spaces as a duality in the abelian gauge theory, giving the explicit mapping relating the two Lagrangians. The duality relates inequivalent theories which lead to isomorphic theories in the low-energy limit. This formulation suggests that mirror symmetry could be derived using abelian duality. The application of duality …
Understanding the map of line defects in a Quantum Field Theory under a given duality is generically a difficult problem. This paper is the second in a series which aims to address this question in the context of 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ mirror symmetry. A general prescription for constructing vortex defects and their mirror maps in quiver gauge theories beyond the $A$-type was presented by the author in an earlier paper [arxiv:2103.01243], where specific examples involving $D$-type and affine $D$-type quivers were discussed. In this paper, we apply the aforementioned prescription to construct a fam…
Argyres-Douglas theories constitute an important class of superconformal field theories in $4$d. The main focus of this paper is on two infinite families of such theories, known as $D^b_p(\mathrm{SO}(2N))$ and $(A_m, D_n)$. We analyze in depth their conformal manifolds. In doing so we encounter several theories of class $\mathcal{S}$ of twisted $A_{\text{odd}}$, twisted $A_{\text{even}}$ and twisted $D$ types associated with a sphere with one twisted irregular puncture and one twisted regular puncture. These models include $D_p(G)$ theories, with $G$ non-simply-laced algebras. A number of new …
We employ the holographic method to study fluctuations and dissipation of an $n$-dimensional moving mirror coupled to quantum critical theories in $d$ spacetime dimensions. The bulk counterpart of the mirror with perfect reflection is a D$(n+1)$ brane in the Lifshitz geometry of $d+1$ dimensions. The motion of the mirror can be realized from the dynamics of the brane at the boundary of the bulk. The excited modes of the brane in the bulk render the mirror undergoing Brownian motion. For small displacement of the mirror, we derive the analytical results of the correlation functions and response…
We clarify how mirror symmetry acts on 3d theories with N=2,3 or 4 supersymmetries and non-abelian Chern-Simons terms and then construct many new examples. We identify a new duality, geometric duality, that allows us to generate large families of gauge theories, with and without Chern-Simons term, that all flow to the same conformal field theory in the infrared. In particular, we find an interesting duality of dualities: a pair of theories related via mirror symmetry can be mapped, via geometric duality, into a pair of gauge theories related by Seiberg duality. This network of dualities can be…
We study (0,2) deformations of N=2 Liouville field theory and its mirror duality. A gauged linear sigma model construction of the ultraviolet theory connects (0,2) deformations of Liouville field theory and (0,2) deformations of N=2 SL(2,R)/U(1) coset model as a mirror duality. Our duality proposal from the gauged linear sigma model completely agrees with the exact CFT analysis. In the context of heterotic string compactifications, the deformation corresponds to the introduction of a non-trivial gauge bundle. This non-compact Landau-Ginzburg construction yields a novel way to study the gauge b…
We study the linear sigma model subspace of the moduli space of (0,2) superconformal world-sheet theories obtained by deforming (2,2) theories based on Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in reflexively plain toric varieties. We describe a set of algebraic coordinates on this subspace, formulate a (0,2) generalization of the monomial-divisor mirror map, and show that the map exchanges principal components of singular loci of the mirror half-twisted theories. In non-reflexively plain examples the proposed map yields a mirror isomorphism between subfamilies of linear sigma models.
We found a lot of new three dimensional N = 4 mirror pairs generalizing previous considerations on three dimensional generalized quiver gauge theories. We recovered almost all previous discovered mirror pairs with these constructions. One side of these mirror pairs are always the conventional quiver gauge theories. One of our result can also be used to determine the matter content and weakly coupled gauge groups of four dimensional N = 2 generalized quiver gauge theories derived from six dimensional A_N and D_N theory, therefore we explicitly constructed four dimensional S-duality pairs.
We present non-trivial checks of three dimensional mirror symmetry for $\mathcal{N}=4$, $\hat{D}_N$ quiver gauge theories with unitary gauge groups using partition function on a round sphere. Type IIB (Hanany-Witten) realization of these theories and their mirror duals (as world volume gauge theories on coincident D3 branes) involve 1/2-BPS boundary conditions associated with orbifold and orientifold 5-planes respectively, in addition to NS5 and D5 branes. We demonstrate that partition function for a given quiver in this class may be decomposed into distinct contributions from the aforemention…
We study the realization of the (super) conformal topological symmetry in two-dimensional field theories. The mirror automorphism of the topological algebra is represented as a reflection in the space of fields. As a consequence, a double BRST structure for topological matter theories is found. It is shown that the implementation of the topological symmetry in non-critical (super)string theories depends on the matter content of the two realizations connected by the mirror transformation.
We generalize the known method for explicit construction of mirror pairs of $(2,2)$-superconformal field theories, using the formalism of Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds. Geometrically, these theories are realized as Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in weighted projective spaces. This generalization makes it possible to construct the mirror partners of many manifolds for which the mirror was not previously known.
In this paper we extend the nonabelian mirror proposal of two of the authors from two-dimensional gauge theories with connected gauge groups to the case of O(k) gauge groups with discrete theta angles. We check our proposed extension by counting and comparing vacua in mirrors to known dual two-dimensional (S)O(k) gauge theories. The mirrors in question are Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds, and for mirrors to O(k) gauge theories, the critical loci of the mirror superpotential often intersect fixed-point loci, so that to count vacua, one must take into account twisted sector contributions. This is a te…
We study N = 4 quiver theories on the three-sphere. We compute partition functions using the localisation method by Kapustin et al. solving exactly the matrix integrals at finite N, as functions of mass and Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters. We find a simple explicit formula for the partition function of the quiver tail T(SU(N)). This formula opens the way for the analysis of star-shaped quivers and their mirrors (that are the Gaiotto-type theories arising from M5 branes on punctured Riemann surfaces). We provide non-perturbative checks of mirror symmetry for infinite classes of theories and find th…
We construct intersecting D-brane configurations that encode the gauge groups and field content of dual N=4 supersymmetric gauge theories in three dimensions. The duality which exchanges the Coulomb and Higgs branches and the Fayet-Iliopoulos and mass parameters is derived from the SL(2,Z) symmetry of the type IIB string. Using the D-brane configurations we construct explicitly this mirror map between the dual theories and study the instanton corrections in the D-brane worldvolume theory via open string instantons. A general procedure to obtain mirror pairs is presented and illustrated. We enc…
Mirror symmetry, a three dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ IR duality, has been studied in detail for quiver gauge theories of the $ADE$-type (as well as their affine versions) with unitary gauge groups. The $A$-type quivers (also known as linear quivers) and the associated mirror dualities have a particularly simple realization in terms of a Type IIB system of D3-D5-NS5-branes. In this paper, we present a systematic field theory prescription for constructing 3d mirror pairs beyond the $ADE$ quiver gauge theories, starting from a dual pair of $A$-type quivers with unitary gauge groups. The construct…
Mirror Symmetry for a large class of three dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric gauge theories has a natural explanation in terms of M-theory compactified on a product of $\text{ALE}$ spaces. A pair of such mirror duals can be described as two different deformations of the eleven-dimensional supergravity background $\mathcal{M}=\mathbb{R}^{2,1} \times \text{ALE}_{1} \times \text{ALE}_{2}$, to which they flow in the deep IR. Using the $A-D-E$ classification of $\text{ALE}$ spaces, we present a neat way to catalogue dual quiver gauge theories that arise in this fashion. In addition to the …
We construct and analyze dual N=4 supersymmetric gauge theories in three dimensions with unitary and symplectic gauge groups. The gauge groups and the field content of the theories are encoded in quiver diagrams. The duality exchanges the Coulomb and Higgs branches and the Fayet-Iliopoulos and mass parameters. We analyze the classical and the quantum moduli spaces of the theories and construct an explicit mirror map between the mass parameters and the the Fayet-Iliopoulos parameters of the dual. The results generalize the relation between ALE spaces and moduli spaces of SU(n) and SO(2n) instan…
In this paper we propose a systematic construction of mirrors of nonabelian two dimensional (2,2) supersymmetric gauge theories. Specifically, we propose a construction of B-twisted Landau-Ginzburg orbifolds whose correlation functions match those of A-twisted supersymmetric gauge theories, and whose critical loci reproduce quantum cohomology and Coulomb branch relations in A-twisted gauge theories, generalizing the Hori-Vafa mirror construction. We check this proposal in a wide variety of examples. For instance, we construct mirrors corresponding to Grassmannians and two-step flag manifolds, …
We present a novel derivation of the duality between the two-dimensional Euclidean black hole and supersymmetric Liouville theory. We realise these (1+1)-dimensional conformal field theories on the worldvolume of domain walls in a (2+1)-dimensional gauge theory. We show that there exist two complementary descriptions of the domain wall dynamics, resulting in the two mirror conformal field theories. In particular, effects which are usually attributed to worldsheet instantons are captured by the classical scattering of domain walls.
We find general relations between the on-shell gravitational trace anomaly A_N, and the logarithmic correction Delta S_N to the entropy of "large" BPS extremal black holes in N>1 supergravity theories in D=4 space-time dimensions (recently computed by Sen [arXiv:1108.3842]). For (generalized) self-mirror theories (all having A_N = 0), we obtain the result DeltaS_N = - Delta S_(8-N) = 2 - N/2, whereas for generic theories the trace anomaly tildeA_N of the fully dualized theory turns out to coincide with 2Delta S_N, up to a model-independent shift: tildeA_N = 2Delta S_N - 1. We also speculate on…
D3 branes stretching between webs of (p,q) 5branes provide an interesting class of 3d N=2 theories. For generic pq-webs however the low energy field theory is not known. We use 3d mirror symmetry and Type IIB S-duality to construct Abelian gauge theories corresponding to D3 branes ending on both sides of a pq-web made of many coincident NS5's intersecting one D5. These theories contain chiral monopole operators in the superpotential and enjoy a non trivial pattern of global symmetry enhancements. In the special case of the pq-web with one D5 and one NS5, the 3d low energy SCFT admits three dua…
We explicitly apply localization results to study the interpolation between three and two dimensional mirror symmetry for Abelian gauge theories with four supercharges. We first use the ellipsoid S_b^3 partition functions to verify the mirror symmetry between a pair of general three dimensional N=2 Abelian Chern-Simons quiver gauge theories. These expressions readily factorize into holomorphic blocks and their anti-holomorphic copies, so we can also obtain the partition functions on S^1 x S^2 via fusion procedure. We then demonstrate S^1 x S^2 partition functions for the three dimensional Abel…
We provide non-trivial checks of $\mathcal{N}=4, D=3$ mirror symmetry in a large class of quiver gauge theories whose Type IIB (Hanany-Witten) descriptions involve D3 branes ending on orbifold/orientifold 5-planes at the boundary. From the M-theory perspective, such theories can be understood in terms of coincident M2 branes sitting at the origin of a product of an A-type and a D-type ALE (Asymtotically Locally Euclidean) space with G-fluxes. Families of mirror dual pairs, which arise in this fashion, can be labeled as $(A_{m-1},D_n)$, where $m$ and $n$ are integers. For a large subset of such…
We study compactification of 6 dimensional (1,0) theories on T^2. We use geometric engineering of these theories via F-theory and employ mirror symmetry technology to solve for the effective 4d N=2 geometry for a large number of the (1,0) theories including those associated with conformal matter. Using this we show that for a given 6d theory we can obtain many inequivalent 4d N=2 SCFTs. Some of these respect the global symmetries of the 6d theory while others exhibit SL(2,Z) duality symmetry inherited from global diffeomorphisms of the T^2. This construction also explains the 6d origin of modu…
Mirror maps play an important role in studying supersymmetric gauge theories. In these theories the dynamics is often encoded in an algebraic curve where two sets of periods enjoy the symplectic structure. The A-periods contribute to redefinitions of chemical potentials known as mirror maps. Using the quantization of the $D_5$ del Pezzo geometry, which enjoys the symmetry of the $D_5$ Weyl group, we are able to identify clearly the group-theoretical structure and the multi-covering structure for the mirror map. With the structures, we can apply the mirror map to superconformal Chern-Simons the…
Wilson loops in gauge theories pose a fundamental challenge for dualities. Wilson loops are labeled by a representation of the gauge group and should map under duality to loop operators labeled by the same data, yet generically, dual theories have completely different gauge groups. In this paper we resolve this conundrum for three dimensional mirror symmetry. We show that Wilson loops are exchanged under mirror symmetry with Vortex loop operators, whose microscopic definition in terms of a supersymmetric quantum mechanics coupled to the theory encode in a non-trivial way a representation of th…
We construct a class of Heterotic String vacua described by Landau--Ginzburg theories and consider orbifolds of these models with respect to abelian symmetries. For LG--vacua described by potentials in which at most three scaling fields are coupled we explicitly construct the chiral ring and discuss its diagonalization with respect to its most general abelian symmetry. For theories with couplings between at most two fields we present results of an explicit construction of the LG--potentials and their orbifolds. The emerging space of (2,2)--theories shows a remarkable mirror symmetry. It also c…
One of the open problems in understanding (0,2) mirror symmetry concerns the construction of Toda-like Landau-Ginzburg mirrors to (0,2) theories on Fano spaces. In this paper, we begin to fill this gap by making an ansatz for (0,2) Toda-like theories mirror to (0,2) supersymmetric nonlinear sigma models on products of projective spaces, with deformations of the tangent bundle, generalizing a special case previously worked out for P1xP1. We check this ansatz by matching correlation functions of the B/2-twisted Toda-like theories to correlation functions of corresponding A/2-twisted nonlinear si…
We review the geometrical framework required for understanding the moduli space of $(2,2)$ superconformal-field theories, highlighting various aspects of its phase structure. In particular, we indicate the types of phase diagrams that emerge for ``generic'' Calabi-Yau theories and review an efficient method for their determination. We then focus on some special types of phase diagrams that have bearing on the issues of rigid manifolds, mirror symmetry and geometrical duality.
We test a proposed mirror map at the level of correlators for linear models describing the (0,2) moduli space of superconformal field theories with a (2,2) locus associated to Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in toric varieties. We verify in non-trivial examples that the correlators are exchanged by the mirror map and we derive a correspondence between the observables of the A/2- and B/2-twisted theories. We also comment on the global structure of the (0,2) moduli space and present a simple non-renormalization argument for a large class of B/2 model subfamilies.
We prove a recent conjecture that the partition function of N=(2, 2) gauge theories on the two-sphere which flow to Calabi-Yau sigma models in the infrared computes the exact Kahler potential on the quantum Kahler moduli space of the corresponding Calabi-Yau. This establishes the two-sphere partition function as a new method of computation of worldsheet instantons and Gromov-Witten invariants. We also calculate the exact two-sphere partition function for N=(2,2) Landau-Ginzburg models with an arbitrary twisted superpotential W. These results are used to demonstrate that arbitrary abelian gauge…
We study non-abelian monopole operators in the infrared limit of three-dimensional SU(N_c) and N=4 SU(2) gauge theories. Using large N_f expansion and operator-state isomorphism of the resulting superconformal field theories, we construct monopole operators which are (anti-)chiral primaries and compute their charges under the global symmetries. Predictions of three-dimensional mirror symmetry for the quantum numbers of these monopole operators are verified.
We consider T[SU(N)] and its mirror, and we argue that there are two more dual frames, which are obtained by adding flipping fields for the moment maps on the Higgs and Coulomb branch. Turning on a monopole deformation in T[SU(N)], and following its effect on each dual frame, we obtain four new daughter theories dual to each other. We are then able to construct pairs of 3d spectral dual theories by performing simple operations on the four dual frames of T[SU(N)]. Engineering these 3d spectral pairs as codimension-two defect theories coupled to a trivial 5d theory, via Higgsing, we show that ou…
By applying mirror symmetry to D-branes in a Calabi-Yau geometry we shed light on a $G_2$ flop in M-theory relevant for large $N$ dualities in ${\cal N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories. Furthermore, we derive superpotential for M-theory on corresponding $G_2$ manifolds for all A-D-E cases. This provides an effective method for geometric engineering of ${\cal N}=1$ gauge theories for which mirror symmetry gives exact information about vacuum geometry. We also find a number of interesting dual descriptions.
We apply the recent proposal for mirrors of nonabelian (2,2) supersymmetric two-dimensional gauge theories to make predictions for two-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories with exceptional gauge groups G2, F4, E6, E7, and E8. We compute the mirror Landau-Ginzburg models and predict excluded Coulomb loci and Coulomb branch relations (quantum cohomology). We also discuss the relationship between weight lattice normalizations and theta angle periodicities in the proposal, and explore different conventions for the mirrors. Finally, we discuss the behavior of pure gauge theories with exception…
Quiver theories arising on D3-branes at orbifold and del Pezzo singularities are studied using mirror symmetry. We show that the quivers for the orbifold theories are given by the soliton spectrum of massive 2d N=2 theory with weighted projective spaces as target. For the theories obtained from the del Pezzo singularities we show that the geometry of the mirror manifold gives quiver theories related to each other by Picard-Lefschetz transformations, a subset of which are simple Seiberg duals. We also address how one indeed derives Seiberg duality on the matter content from such geometrical tra…
We construct two dimensional gauge theories with $N= (4,4)$ supersymmetry from branes of type IIA string theory. Quantum effects in the two dimensional gauge theory are analyzed by embedding the IIA brane construction into M-theory. We find that the Coulomb branch of one theory and the Higgs branch of a mirror theory become equivalent at strong coupling. A relationship to the decoupling limit of the type IIA and IIB 5-branes in Matrix theory is shown. T-duality between the ALE metric and the wormhole metric of Callan, Harvey, and Strominger is discussed from a brane perspective and some puzzle…
In this note we study IR limits of pure two-dimensional supersymmetric gauge theories with semisimple non-simply-connected gauge groups including SU(k)/Z_k, SO(2k)/Z_2, Sp(2k)/Z_2, E_6/Z_3, and E_7/Z_2 for various discrete theta angles, both directly in the gauge theory and also in nonabelian mirrors, extending a classification begun in previous work. We find in each case that there are supersymmetric vacua for precisely one value of the discrete theta angle, and no supersymmetric vacua for other values, hence supersymmetry is broken in the IR for most discrete theta angles. Furthermore, for t…
