We take two new approaches to design efficient algorithms for transmitter optimization under rate constraints, to guarantee the Quality of Service in general MIMO interference networks, which is a combination of multiple interfering broadcast channels (BC) and multiaccess channels (MAC) and is named B-MAC Networks. Two related optimization problems, maximizing the minimum of weighted rates under a sum-power constraint and minimizing the sum-power under rate constraints, are considered. The first approach takes advantage of existing efficient algorithms for SINR problems by building a bridge between rate and SINR through the design of optimal mappings between them. The approach can be applied to other optimization problems as well. The second approach employs polite water-filling, which is the optimal network version of water-filling that we recently found. It replaces most generic optimization algorithms currently used for networks and reduces the complexity while demonstrating superior performance even in non-convex cases. Both centralized and distributed algorithms are designed and the performance is analyzed in addition to numeric examples.
This paper gives the long sought network version of water-filling named as polite water-filling. Unlike in single-user MIMO channels, where no one uses general purpose optimization algorithms in place of the simple and optimal water-filling for transmitter optimization, the traditional water-filling is generally far from optimal in networks as simple as MIMO multiaccess channels (MAC) and broadcast channels (BC), where steepest ascent algorithms have been used except for the sum-rate optimization. This is changed by the polite water-filling that is optimal for all boundary points of the capaci…

We consider a generalized multi-hop MIMO amplify-and-forward (AF) relay network with multiple sources/destinations and arbitrarily number of relays. We establish two dualities and the corresponding dual transformations between such a network and its dual, respectively under single network linear constraint and per-hop linear constraint. The result is a generalization of the previous dualities under different special cases and is proved using new techniques which reveal more insight on the duality structure that can be exploited to optimize MIMO precoders. A unified optimization framework is pr…
MIMO interference network optimization is important for increasingly crowded wireless communication networks. We provide a new algorithm, named Dual Link algorithm, for the classic problem of weighted sum-rate maximization for MIMO multiaccess channels (MAC), broadcast channels (BC), and general MIMO interference channels with Gaussian input and a total power constraint. For MIMO MAC/BC, the algorithm finds optimal signals to achieve the capacity region boundary. For interference channels with Gaussian input assumption, two of the previous state-of-the-art algorithms are the WMMSE algorithm an…
We propose an iterative mode-dropping algorithm that optimizes input signals to achieve the sum capacity of the MIMO-MAC with per-antenna power constraint. The algorithm successively optimizes each user's input covariance matrix by applying mode-dropping to the equivalent single-user MIMO rate maximization problem. Both analysis and simulation show fast convergence. We then use the algorithm to briefly highlight the difference in MIMO-MAC capacities under sum and per-antenna power constraints.
In this paper we investigate the criteria proposed by Coronel et al. for constructing MIMO MAC-DMT optimal codes over several classes of fading channels. We first give a counterexample showing their DMT result is not correct when the channel is frequency-selective. For the case of symmetric MIMO-MAC flat fading channels, their DMT result reduces to exactly the same as that derived by Tse et al., and we therefore focus on their criteria for constructing MAC-DMT optimal codes, especially when the number of receive antennas is sufficiently large. In such case, we show their criterion is equivalen…
We consider the problem of designing low latency and low complexity schemes for channel state feedback over the MIMO-MAC (multiple-input multiple-output multiple access channel). We develop a framework for analyzing this problem in terms of minimizing the MSE distortion, and come up with separated source-channel schemes and joint source-channel schemes that perform better than analog feedback. We also develop a strikingly simple code design based on scalar quantization and uncoded QAM modulation that achieves the theoretical asymptotic performance limit of the separated approach with very low …
This paper develops a novel approach to obtaining the optimal scheduling strategy in a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) multi-access channel (MAC), where each transmitter is powered by an individual energy harvesting process. Relying on the state-of-the-art convex optimization tools, the proposed approach provides a low-complexity block coordinate ascent algorithm to obtain the optimal transmission policy that maximizes the weighted sum-throughput for MIMO MAC. The proposed approach can provide the optimal benchmarks for all practical schemes in energy-harvesting powered MIMO MAC transmissions.…
We propose a learning technique for MIMO secondary users (SU) to spatially coexist with Primary Users (PU). By learning the null space of the interference channel to the PU, the SU can utilize idle degrees of freedom that otherwise would be unused by the PU. This learning process does not require any handshake or explicit information exchange between the PU and the SU. The only requirement is that the PU broadcasts a periodic beacon that is a function of its noise plus interference power, through a low rate control channel. The learning process is based on energy measurements, independent of t…
This paper provides a general construction method for multiple-input multiple-output multiple access channel codes (MIMO MAC codes) that have so called generalized full rank property. The achieved constructions give a positive answer to the question whether it is generally possible to reach the so called pigeon hole bound, that is an upper bound for the decay of determinants of MIMO-MAC channel codes.
In this paper, we consider a two-cell interfering two-user multiple-input multiple-output multiple access channel (MIMO-MAC) with limited feedback. We first investigate the multiplexing gain of such channel when users have perfect channel state information at transmitter (CSIT) by exploiting an interference alignment scheme. In addition, we propose a feedback framework for the interference alignment in the limited feedback system. On the basis of the proposed feedback framework, we analyze the rate gap loss and it is shown that in order to keep the same multiplexing gain with the case of perfe…
Owing to the structure of the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel (BC), associated optimization problems such as capacity region computation and beamforming optimization are typically non-convex, and cannot be solved directly. One feasible approach to these problems is to transform them into their dual multiple access channel (MAC) problems, which are easier to deal with due to their convexity properties. The conventional BC-MAC duality is established via BC-MAC signal transformation, and has been successfully applied to solve beamforming optimization, signal-to-in…
We show that for the multi-antenna Gaussian multi-access channel (MAC) and broadcast channel (BC) with perfect feedback, the rate regions achieved by linear-feedback coding schemes (called linear-feedback capacity regions) coincide when the same total input-power constraint is imposed on both channels and when the MAC channel matrices are the transposes of the BC channel matrices. Such a pair of MAC and BC is called dual. We also identify sub-classes of linear-feedback coding schemes that achieve the linear-feedback capacity regions of these two channels and present multi-letter expressions fo…
This work considers space-time block coding for the Rayleigh fading multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple access channel (MAC). If we suppose that the receiver is performing joint maximum-likelihood (ML) decoding, optimizing a MIMO MAC code against a fixed error event leads to a situation where the joint codewords of the users in error can be seen as a single user MIMO code. In such a case pair-wise error probability (PEP) based determinant criterion of Tarokh et al. can be used to upper bound the error probability. It was already proven by Lahtonen et al. that irrespective of the use…
In this paper, we analyze the 2-relay multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian diamond channel. We show that a multihopping decode-and-forward with multiple access (MDF-MAC) protocol achieves rates within a constant gap from capacity when a channel parameter $Δ$ is greater than zero. We also identify the transmit covariance matrices to be used by each relay in the multiple-access (MAC) state of the MDF-MAC protocol. As done for the single-antenna 2-relay Gaussian diamond channel, the channel parameter $Δ$ is defined to be the difference between the product of the capacities of the links …
In this paper, we investigate the design of linear precoders for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple access channels (MAC). We assume that statistical channel state information (CSI) is available at the transmitters and consider the problem under the practical finite alphabet input assumption. First, we derive an asymptotic (in the large-system limit) weighted sum rate (WSR) expression for the MIMO MAC with finite alphabet inputs and general jointly-correlated fading. Subsequently, we obtain necessary conditions for linear precoders maximizing the asymptotic WSR and propose an itera…
Grant-free access schemes are candidates to support future massive multiple access applications owing to their capability to reduce control signaling and latency. As a promising class of grant-free schemes, coded random access schemes can achieve high reliabilities also with uncoordinated transmissions and therefore in presence packet collisions. In this paper, an analysis tool for coded random access, based on density evolution, is proposed and exploited for system design and optimization. In sharp contrast with the existing literature, where such tools have been developed under simplified ch…
It has been shown recently that the dirty-paper coding is the optimal strategy for maximizing the sum rate of multiple-input multiple-output Gaussian broadcast channels (MIMO BC). Moreover, by the channel duality, the nonconvex MIMO BC sum rate problem can be transformed to the convex dual MIMO multiple-access channel (MIMO MAC) problem with a sum power constraint. In this paper, we design an efficient algorithm based on conjugate gradient projection (CGP) to solve the MIMO BC maximum sum rate problem. Our proposed CGP algorithm solves the dual sum power MAC problem by utilizing the powerful c…
We investigate the secure degrees of freedom (SDoF) of the K-user MIMO multiple access (MAC) and the two user MIMO interference channel. An unknown number of eavesdroppers are trying to decode the messages sent by the transmitters. Each eavesdropper is equipped with a number of antennas less than or equal to a known value NE. The legitimate transmitters and receivers are assumed to have global channel knowledge. We present the sum SDoF of the two user MIMO interference channel. We derive an upperbound on the sum SDoF of the K-user MAC channel and present an achievable scheme that partially mee…
Consider a Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple-access channel (MAC) with channel matrix $\mathbf{H}$ and a Gaussian MIMO broadcast channel (BC) with channel matrix $\mathbf{H}^{\mathsf{T}}$. For the MIMO MAC, the integer-forcing architecture consists of first decoding integer-linear combinations of the transmitted codewords, which are then solved for the original messages. For the MIMO BC, the integer-forcing architecture consists of pre-inverting the integer-linear combinations at the transmitter so that each receiver can obtain its desired codeword by decoding an integer-…
We present a general rate duality between the multiple access channel (MAC) and the broadcast channel (BC) which is applicable to systems with and without nonlinear interference cancellation. Different to the state-of-the-art rate duality with interference subtraction from Vishwanath et al., the proposed duality is filter-based instead of covariance-based and exploits the arising unitary degree of freedom to decorrelate every point-to-point link. Therefore, it allows for noncooperative stream-wise decoding which reduces complexity and latency. Moreover, the conversion from one domain to the ot…
Interference alignment (IA) is a promising technique to efficiently mitigate interference and to enhance the capacity of a wireless communication network. This paper proposes a grouping-based interference alignment (GIA) with optimized IA-Cell assignment for the multiple cells interfering multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) multiple access channel (MAC) network under limited feedback. This work consists of three main parts: 1) a complete study (including some new improvements) of the GIA with respect to the degrees of freedom (DoF) and optimal linear transceiver design is performed, whic…
In this paper, Space-Time Block Codes (STBCs) with reduced Sphere Decoding Complexity (SDC) are constructed for two-user Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) fading multiple access channels. In this set-up, both the users employ identical STBCs and the destination performs sphere decoding for the symbols of the two users. First, we identify the positions of the zeros in the $\textbf{R}$ matrix arising out of the Q-R decomposition of the lattice generator such that (i) the worst case SDC (WSDC) and (ii) the average SDC (ASDC) are reduced. Then, a set of necessary and sufficient conditions on t…
In this paper, we study the multiple-antenna wireless communication networks, where a large number of devices simultaneously communicate with an access point. The capacity region of multiple-input multiple-output massive multiple access channels (MIMO mMAC) is investigated. While joint typicality decoding is utilized to establish the achievability of capacity region for conventional MAC with fixed number of users, the technique is not directly applicable for MIMO mMAC. Instead, an information-theoretic approach based on Gallager's error exponent analysis is exploited to characterize the \textc…
Massive MIMO and small cell are both recognized as the key technologies for the future 5G wireless systems. In this paper, we investigate the problem of user association in a heterogeneous network (HetNet) with massive MIMO and small cells, where the macro base station (BS) is equipped with a massive MIMO and the picocell BS's are equipped with regular MIMOs. We first develop centralized user association algorithms with proven optimality, considering various objectives such as rate maximization, proportional fairness, and joint user association and resource allocation. We then model the massiv…
Recently, researchers showed that dirty paper coding (DPC) is the optimal transmission strategy for multiple-input multiple-output broadcast channels (MIMO-BC). In this paper, we study how to determine the maximum weighted sum of DPC rates through solving the maximum weighted sum rate problem of the dual MIMO multiple access channel (MIMO-MAC) with a sum power constraint. We first simplify the maximum weighted sum rate problem such that enumerating all possible decoding orders in the dual MIMO-MAC is unnecessary. We then design an efficient algorithm based on conjugate gradient projection (CGP…
We propose the exact calculation of the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of mutual information (MI) for a two-user MIMO MAC network over block Rayleigh fading channels. So far the PDF and CDF have been numerically evaluated since MI depends on the quotient of two Wishart matrices, and no closed-form for this quotient was available. We derive exact results for the PDF and CDF of extreme (the smallest/the largest) eigenvalues. Based on the results of quotient ensemble the exact calculation for PDF and CDF of mutual information is presented via Laplace…
The emergence of heterogeneous decentralized networks without a central controller, such as device-to-device communication systems, has created the need for new problem frameworks to design and analyze the performance of such networks. As a key step towards such an analysis for general networks, this paper examines the strategic behavior of \emph{receivers} in a Gaussian broadcast channel (BC) and \emph{transmitters} in a multiple access channel (MAC) with sum power constraints (sum power MAC) using the framework of non-cooperative game theory. These signaling scenarios are modeled as generali…
Considering a heterogeneous network (HetNet) system consisting of a macro tier overlaid with a second tier of small cells (SCs), this paper studies the mean square error (MSE) based precoding design to be employed by the macro base station and the SC nodes for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) downlinks. First, a new sum-MSE of all users based minimization problem is proposed aiming to design a set of macro cell (MC) and SC transmit precoding matrices or vectors. To solve it, two different algorithms are presented. One is via a relaxed-constraints based alternating optimization (RAO) reali…
In this paper, while considering the impact of antenna correlation and the interference from neighboring users, we analyze channel estimation and training sequence design for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) two-way relay (TWR) systems. To this end, we propose to decompose the bidirectional transmission links into two phases, i.e., the multiple access (MAC) phase and the broadcasting (BC) phase. By considering the Kronecker-structured channel model, we derive the optimal linear minimum mean-square-error (LMMSE) channel estimators. The corresponding training designs for the MAC and BC phases are…
The performance of linear receivers in the presence of co-channel interference in Rayleigh channels is a fundamental problem in wireless communications. Performance evaluation for these systems is well-known for receive arrays where the antennas are close enough to experience equal average SNRs from a source. In contrast, almost no analytical results are available for macrodiversity systems where both the sources and receive antennas are widely separated. Here, receive antennas experience unequal average SNRs from a source and a single receive antenna receives a different average SNR from each…
Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques are becoming commonplace in recent wireless communication standards. This added dimension (i.e., space) can be efficiently used to mitigate the interference in the multi-user MIMO context. In this paper, we focus on the uplink of a MIMO multiple access channel (MAC) where perfect channel state information (CSI) is only available at the destination. We provide a new set of sufficient conditions for a wide range of space-time block codes (STBC)s to achieve full-diversity under \emph{partial interference cancellation group decoding} (PICGD) with or…
We consider a MIMO fading broadcast channel and compute achievable ergodic rates when channel state information is acquired at the receivers via downlink training and it is provided to the transmitter by channel state feedback. Unquantized (analog) and quantized (digital) channel state feedback schemes are analyzed and compared under various assumptions. Digital feedback is shown to be potentially superior when the feedback channel uses per channel state coefficient is larger than 1. Also, we show that by proper design of the digital feedback link, errors in the feedback have a minor effect ev…
The physical-layer network coding (PNC) approach provides improved performance in many scenarios over "traditional" relaying techniques or network coding. This work addresses the generalization of PNC to wireless scenarios where network nodes have multiple antennas. We use a recent matrix decomposition, which allows, by linear pre- and post-processing, to simultaneously transform both channel matrices to triangular forms, where the diagonal entries, corresponding to both channels, are equal. This decomposition, in conjunction with precoding, allows to convert any two-input multiple-access chan…
Ultra-dense network (UDN) has been considered as a promising candidate for future 5G network to meet the explosive data demand. To realize UDN, a reliable, Gigahertz bandwidth, and cost-effective backhaul connecting ultra-dense small-cell base stations (BSs) and macro-cell BS is prerequisite. Millimeter-wave (mmWave) can provide the potential Gbps traffic for wireless backhaul. Moreover, mmWave can be easily integrated with massive MIMO for the improved link reliability. In this article, we discuss the feasibility of mmWave massive MIMO based wireless backhaul for 5G UDN, and the benefits and …
We develop a framework for downlink heterogeneous cellular networks with line-of-sight (LoS) and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) transmissions. Using stochastic geometry, we derive tight approximation of achievable downlink rate that enables us to compare the performance between densifying small cells and expanding BS antenna arrays. Interestingly, we find that adding small cells into the network improves the achievable rate much faster than expanding antenna arrays at the macro BS. However, when the small cell density exceeds a critical threshold, the spacial densification will lose its benefits and…
Internet of things, supported by machine-to-machine (M2M) communications, is one of the most important applications for future 6th generation (6G) systems. A major challenge facing by 6G is enabling a massive number of M2M devices to access networks in a timely manner. Therefore, this paper exploits the spatial selectivity of massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) to reduce the collision issue when massive M2M devices initiate random access simultaneously. In particular, a beam-based random access protocol is first proposed to make efficient use of the limited uplink resources for massive M2M…
This paper presents analytical expressions for the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) and the spectral efficiency in macrocellular networks with massive MIMO conjugate beamforming, both with a uniform and a channel-dependent power allocation. These expressions, which apply to very general network geometries, are asymptotic in the strength of the shadowing. Through Monte-Carlo simulation, we verify their accuracy for relevant network topologies and shadowing strengths. Also, since the analysis does not include pilot contamination, we further gauge through Monte-Carlo simulation the deviation th…
In this paper, we study the downlink performance of a heterogeneous cellular network (HetNet) where both macro and small cells share the same spectrum and hence interfere with each other. We assume that the users are concentrated at certain areas in the cell, i.e., they form hotspots. While some of the hotspots are assumed to have a small cell in their vicinity, the others are directly served by the macrocell. Due to a relatively small area of each hotspot, the users lying in a particular hotspot appear to be almost co-located to the macrocells, which are typically deployed at some elevation. …
Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) represent a new technology that can shape the radio wave propagation and thus offers a great variety of possible performance and implementation gains. Motivated by this, we investigate the achievable sum-rate optimization in a broadcast channel (BC) that is equipped with an RIS. We exploit the well-known duality between the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) BC and multiple-access channel (MAC) to derive an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm which optimizes the users' covariance matrices and the RIS phase shifts in the dual MAC. The o…
In most MIMO systems, the family of waterfall error curves, calculated at different spectral efficiencies, are asymptotically parallel at high SNR. In other words, most MIMO systems exhibit a single diversity value for all fixed rates. The MIMO MMSE receiver does not follow this pattern and exhibits a varying diversity in its family of error curves. This work analyzes this interesting behavior of the MMSE MIMO receiver and produces the MMSE MIMO diversity at all rates. The diversity of the quasi-static flat-fading MIMO channel consisting of any arbitrary number of transmit and receive antennas…
In cell-free multiple input multiple output (MIMO) networks, multiple base stations (BSs) collaborate to achieve high spectral efficiency. Nevertheless, high penetration loss due to large blockages in harsh propagation environments is often an issue that severely degrades communication performance. Considering that intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is capable of constructing digitally controllable reflection links in a low-cost manner, we investigate an IRS-enhanced downlink cell-free MIMO network in this paper. We aim to maximize the sum rate of all the users by jointly optimizing the tran…
Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) is anticipated to have great applications in fifth-generation (5G) and beyond communication systems. In this paper, we address the energy efficiency (EE) optimization problem for SWIPT multiple-input multiple-output broadcast channel (MIMO-BC) with time-switching (TS) receiver design. Our aim is to maximize the EE of the system whilst satisfying certain constraints in terms of maximum transmit power and minimum harvested energy per user. The coupling of the optimization variables, namely, transmit covariance matrices and TS ratios, l…
This paper explores the benefit of using some of the machine learning techniques and Big data optimization tools in approximating maximum likelihood (ML) detection of Large Scale MIMO systems. First, large scale MIMO detection problem is formulated as a LASSO (Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator) optimization problem. Then, Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) is considered in solving this problem. The choice of ADMM is motivated by its ability of solving convex optimization problems by breaking them into smaller sub-problems, each of which are then easier to handle. …
In this paper, we investigate the potential benefits of the massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) enabled heterogeneous cloud radio access network (C-RAN) in terms of the secrecy and energy efficiency (EE). In this network, both remote radio heads (RRHs) and massive MIMO macrocell base stations (BSs) are deployed and soft fractional frequency reuse (S-FFR) is adopted to mitigate the inter-tier interference. We first examine the physical layer security by deriving the area ergodic secrecy rate and secrecy outage probability. Our results reveal that the use of massive MIMO and C-RAN can …
The degrees of freedom (DoF) of the MIMO Y-channel, a multi-way communication network consisting of 3 users and a relay, are characterized for arbitrary number of antennas. The converse is provided by cut-set bounds and novel genie-aided bounds. The achievability is shown by a scheme that uses beamforming to establish network coding on-the-fly at the relay in the uplink, and zero-forcing pre-coding in the downlink. It is shown that the network has min{2M_2+2M_3,M_1+M_2+M_3,2N} DoF, where M_j and N represent the number of antennas at user j and the relay, respectively. Thus, in the extreme case…
The optimization of the transmit parameters (power allocation and steering vectors) for the MIMO BC under general linear constraints is treated under the optimal DPC coding strategy and the simple suboptimal linear zero-forcing beamforming strategy. In the case of DPC, we show that "SINR duality" and "min-max duality" yield the same dual MAC problem, and compare two alternatives for its efficient solution. In the case of zero-forcing beamforming, we provide a new efficient algorithm based on the direct optimization of a generalized inverse matrix. In both cases, the algorithms presented here a…
We study the performance of the simulated bifurcation (SB) algorithm for signal detection in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, a problem of key interest in modern wireless communication systems. Our results show that SB algorithm can achieve significant performance improvement over the widely used linear minimum-mean square error decoder in terms of the bit error rate versus the signal-to-noise ratio, as well as performance improvement over the coherent Ising machine based MIMO detection method.
Future wireless networks need to support massive machine type communication (mMTC) where a massive number of devices accesses the network and massive MIMO is a promising enabling technology. Massive access schemes have been studied for co-located massive MIMO arrays. In this paper, we investigate the activity detection in grant-free random access for mMTC in cell-free massive MIMO networks using distributed arrays. Each active device transmits a non-orthogonal pilot sequence to the access points (APs) and the APs send the received signals to a central processing unit (CPU) for joint activity d…
We consider two fundamental multi-user channel models: the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wiretap channel with one helper (WTH) and the MIMO multiple access wiretap channel (MAC-WT). In each case, the eavesdropper has $K$ antennas while the remaining terminals have $N$ antennas each. We consider a fast fading channel where the channel state information (CSI) of the legitimate receiver is available at the transmitters but no channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT) is available for the eavesdropper's channel. We determine the optimal sum secure degrees of freedom (s.d.o.f.) f…
Future cellular networks are expected to support new communication paradigms such as machine-type communication (MTC) services along with human-type communication (HTC) services. This requires base stations to serve a large number of devices in relatively short channel coherence intervals which renders allocation of orthogonal pilot sequence per-device approaches impractical. Furthermore, the stringent power constraints, place-and-play type connectivity and various data rate requirements of MTC devices make it impossible for the traditional cellular architecture to accommodate MTC and HTC serv…
A novel stochastic technique is presented to directly model singular vectors and singular values of a multiple input multiple output channel. Thus the component smodeled directly in the eigen domain can be adapted to exhibit realistic physical domain behavior when assembled. The model exploites natural paths of eigenmodes, such that a simple Doppler filter generator process can be used. Furthermore it is possible to directly manipulate the singular vector dynamics in a way that an unrealistic "stress channel" can be modeled in the eigen domain. This is particularly useful for testing the eigen…
This paper focuses on edge caching in dense heterogeneous cellular networks (HetNets), in which small base stations (SBSs) with limited cache size store the popular contents, and massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) aided macro base stations provide wireless self-backhaul when SBSs require the non-cached contents. Our aim is to address the effects of cell load and hit probability on the successful content delivery (SCD), and present the minimum required base station density for avoiding the access overload in an arbitrary small cell and backhaul overload in an arbitrary macrocell. The…
In this paper we present a measurement set-up for massive MIMO channel sounding that shows very good long-term phase stability. Initial measurements were performed in a residential area to evaluate different conventional precoding schemes such as maximum ratio transmission and phase only precoding. A massive amount of data points was collected, with 924 times 64 complex channel weights per data point. Each data point is position-tagged using differential GPS with real-time kinematik, achieving better than 35cm position accuracy in more than 90% of the collected data points, making this dataset…
We address the problem of computing the interference-plus-noise covariance matrix from a sparsely located demodulation reference signal (DMRS) for spatial domain interference whitening (IW). The IW procedure is critical at the user equipment (UE) to mitigate the co-channel interference in 5G new radio (NR) systems. A supervised learning based algorithm is proposed to compute the covariance matrix with goals of minimizing both the block-error rate (BLER) and the whitening complexity. A single neural network is trained to select an IW option for covariance computation in various interference sce…
