We propose an iterative mode-dropping algorithm that optimizes input signals to achieve the sum capacity of the MIMO-MAC with per-antenna power constraint. The algorithm successively optimizes each user's input covariance matrix by applying mode-dropping to the equivalent single-user MIMO rate maximization problem. Both analysis and simulation show fast convergence. We then use the algorithm to briefly highlight the difference in MIMO-MAC capacities under sum and per-antenna power constraints.
This paper proposes two low-complexity iterative algorithms to compute the capacity of a single-user multiple-input multiple-output channel with per-antenna power constraint. The first method results from manipulating the optimality conditions of the considered problem and applying fixed-point iteration. In the second approach, we transform the considered problem into a minimax optimization program using the well-known MAC- BC duality, and then solve it by a novel alternating optimization method. In both proposed iterative methods, each iteration involves an optimization problem which can be e…
Similar to the energy flowing process in traditional heat engines, information could be considered to flow in the communication systems with the form of energy and entropy. Combining the thermodynamic Carnot machine and the classical Shannon information theory, a generalized thermodynamic MIMO (multiple input multiple outputs) communication system is established to analyze the channel capacity using forward error correction codes. Based on the concepts of freedom and entropy in the communication system, the generalized channel capacity is proposed under the thermodynamic theory. Furthermore, t…

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) detection is a fundamental problem in wireless communications and it is strongly NP-hard in general. Massive MIMO has been recognized as a key technology in the fifth generation (5G) and beyond communication networks, which on one hand can significantly improve the communication performance, and on the other hand poses new challenges of solving the corresponding optimization problems due to the large problem size. While various efficient algorithms such as semidefinite relaxation (SDR) based approaches have been proposed for solving the small-scale MIMO de…

A joint pilot assignment and data transmission protocol based on random access is proposed in this paper for the uplink of a massive MIMO system. The p…
In this paper, we investigate the design of linear precoders for the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple access channel (MAC). We assume that statistical channel state information (CSI) is available at the transmitters and consider the problem under the practical finite alphabet input assumption. First, we derive an asymptotic (in the large system limit) expression for the weighted sum rate (WSR) of the MIMO MAC with finite alphabet inputs and Weichselberger's MIMO channel model. Subsequently, we obtain the optimal structures of the linear precoders of the users maximizing the asymp…
To compensate the loss from outdated channel state information in wideband massive multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) systems, channel prediction can be performed by leveraging the temporal correlation of wireless channels. Machine learning (ML)-based channel predictors for massive MIMO systems were designed recently; however, the time overhead to collect a large amount of training data directly affects the latency of the system. In this paper, we propose a novel ML-based channel prediction technique, which can reduce the time overhead to collect the training data by transforming the domain …

In this paper, we analyze the 2-relay multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian diamond channel. We show that a multihopping decode-and-forward with multiple access (MDF-MAC) protocol achieves rates within a constant gap from capacity when a channel parameter $Δ$ is greater than zero. We also identify the transmit covariance matrices to be used by each relay in the multiple-access (MAC) state of the MDF-MAC protocol. As done for the single-antenna 2-relay Gaussian diamond channel, the channel parameter $Δ$ is defined to be the difference between the product of the capacities of the links …

In this paper, an analysis tool for coded random access, based on density evolution, is proposed and exploited for system design and optimization. In sharp contrast with the existing literature, where such tools have been developed under simplified ch…
We investigate the secure degrees of freedom (SDoF) of the K-user MIMO multiple access (MAC) and the two user MIMO interference channel. The legitimate transmitters and receivers are assumed to have global channel knowledge. We present the sum SDoF of the two user MIMO interference channel. We derive an upperbound on the sum SDoF of the K-user MAC channel and present an achievable scheme that partially mee…
Consider a Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multiple-access channel (MAC) with channel matrix $\mathbf{H}$ and a Gaussian MIMO broadcast channel (BC) with channel matrix $\mathbf{H}^{\mathsf{T}}$. For the MIMO MAC, the integer-forcing architecture consists of first decoding integer-linear combinations of the transmitted codewords, which are then solved for the original messages. For the MIMO BC, the integer-forcing architecture consists of pre-inverting the integer-linear combinations at the transmitter so that each receiver can obtain its desired codeword by decoding an integer-…

This work consists of three main parts: 1) a complete study (including some new improvements) of the GIA with respect to the degrees of freedom (DoF) and optimal linear transceiver design is performed, whic…
MIMO interference network optimization is important for increasingly crowded wireless communication networks. We provide a new algorithm, named Dual Link algorithm, for the classic problem of weighted sum-rate maximization for MIMO multiaccess channels (MAC), broadcast channels (BC), and general MIMO interference channels with Gaussian input and a total power constraint. For MIMO MAC/BC, the algorithm finds optimal signals to achieve the capacity region boundary. For interference channels with Gaussian input assumption, two of the previous state-of-the-art algorithms are the WMMSE algorithm an…

We first develop centralized user association algorithms with proven optimality, considering various objectives such as rate maximization, proportional fairness, and joint user association and resource allocation. We then model the massiv…
We propose the exact calculation of the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of mutual information (MI) for a two-user MIMO MAC network over block Rayleigh fading channels. So far the PDF and CDF have been numerically evaluated since MI depends on the quotient of two Wishart matrices, and no closed-form for this quotient was available. We derive exact results for the PDF and CDF of extreme (the smallest/the largest) eigenvalues. Based on the results of quotient ensemble the exact calculation for PDF and CDF of mutual information is presented via Laplace…

The multiple access channel (MAC) with many-user is a general model for massive machine type communications. In this paradigm, the number of users may be comparable or even larger than the coding blocklength $n$. In contrast, classical MAC often assumes fixed and small number of the users. In this paper, we consider the massive access channel with multiple antennas system, where the base station (BS) with multiple receiving antennas serves the users in a single cell. The magnitude of users is assumed to grow unbounded with $n$. We investigate the achievable region of MIMO massive access channe…
In cell-free multiple input multiple output (MIMO) networks, multiple base stations (BSs) collaborate to achieve high spectral efficiency. Nevertheless, high penetration loss due to large blockages in harsh propagation environments is often an issue that severely degrades communication performance. Considering that intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) is capable of constructing digitally controllable reflection links in a low-cost manner, we investigate an IRS-enhanced downlink cell-free MIMO network in this paper. We aim to maximize the sum rate of all the users by jointly optimizing the tran…
In this paper, a free deterministic equivalent is proposed for the capacity analysis of the multi-input multi-output (MIMO) multiple access channel (MAC) with a more general channel model compared to previous works. Specifically, a MIMO MAC with one base station (BS) equipped with several distributed antenna sets is considered. Each link between a user and a BS antenna set forms a jointly correlated Rician fading channel. The analysis is based on operator-valued free probability theory, which broadens the range of applicability of free probability techniques tremendously. By replacing independ…
We develop a framework for downlink heterogeneous cellular networks with line-of-sight (LoS) and non-line-of-sight (NLoS) transmissions. Using stochastic geometry, we derive tight approximation of achievable downlink rate that enables us to compare the performance between densifying small cells and expanding BS antenna arrays. Interestingly, we find that adding small cells into the network improves the achievable rate much faster than expanding antenna arrays at the macro BS. However, when the small cell density exceeds a critical threshold, the spacial densification will lose its benefits and…
We study the performance of the simulated bifurcation (SB) algorithm for signal detection in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, a problem of key interest in modern wireless communication systems. Our results show that SB algorithm can achieve significant performance improvement over the widely used linear minimum-mean square error decoder in terms of the bit error rate versus the signal-to-noise ratio, as well as performance improvement over the coherent Ising machine based MIMO detection method.
Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) represent a new technology that can shape the radio wave propagation and thus offers a great variety of possible performance and implementation gains. Motivated by this, we investigate the achievable sum-rate optimization in a broadcast channel (BC) that is equipped with an RIS. We exploit the well-known duality between the Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) BC and multiple-access channel (MAC) to derive an alternating optimization (AO) algorithm which optimizes the users' covariance matrices and the RIS phase shifts in the dual MAC. We consider two fundamental multi-user channel models: the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wiretap channel with one helper (WTH) and the MIMO multiple access wiretap channel (MAC-WT). In each case, the eavesdropper has $K$ antennas while the remaining terminals have $N$ antennas each. We consider a fast fading channel where the channel state information (CSI) of the legitimate receiver is available at the transmitters but no channel state information at the transmitters (CSIT) is available for the eavesdropper's channel. We determine the optimal sum secure degrees of freedom (s.d.o.f.) f…

This paper explores the benefit of using some of the machine learning techniques and Big data optimization tools in approximating maximum likelihood (ML) detection of Large Scale MIMO systems. First, large scale MIMO detection problem is formulated as a LASSO (Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator) optimization problem. Then, Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) is considered in solving this problem. The choice of ADMM is motivated by its ability of solving convex optimization problems by breaking them into smaller sub-problems, each of which are then easier to handle. …
A novel stochastic technique is presented to directly model singular vectors and singular values of a multiple input multiple output channel. Thus the component smodeled directly in the eigen domain can be adapted to exhibit realistic physical domain behavior when assembled. The model exploites natural paths of eigenmodes, such that a simple Doppler filter generator process can be used. Furthermore it is possible to directly manipulate the singular vector dynamics in a way that an unrealistic "stress channel" can be modeled in the eigen domain. This is particularly useful for testing the eigen…
We address the problem of computing the interference-plus-noise covariance matrix from a sparsely located demodulation reference signal (DMRS) for spatial domain interference whitening (IW). The IW procedure is critical at the user equipment (UE) to mitigate the co-channel interference in 5G new radio (NR) systems. A supervised learning based algorithm is proposed to compute the covariance matrix with goals of minimizing both the block-error rate (BLER) and the whitening complexity. A single neural network is trained to select an IW option for covariance computation in various interference sce…
In the spatial channel models used in multi-antenna wireless communications, the propagation from a single-antenna transmitter (e.g., a user) to an M-antenna receiver (e.g., a Base Station) occurs through scattering clusters located in the far field of the receiving antenna array. The Angular Spread Function (ASF) of the corresponding M-dim channel vector describes the angular density of the received signal power at the array. The modern literature on massive MIMO has recognized that the knowledge of covariance matrix of user channel vectors is very useful for various applications such as hybr…

Cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) employs a large number of distributed access points (APs) to serve a small number of user equipments (UEs) via the same time/frequency resource. Due to the strong macro diversity gain, cell-free massive MIMO can considerably improve the achievable sum-rate compared to conventional cellular massive MIMO. However, the performance of cell-free massive MIMO is upper limited by inter-user interference (IUI) when employing simple maximum ratio combining (MRC) at receivers. To harness IUI, the expanded compute-and-forward (ECF) framework is adop…
