For every finite-to-one map $λ:Γ\toΓ$ and for every abelian group $K$, the generalized shift $σ_λ$ of the direct sum $\bigoplus_ΓK$ is the endomorphism defined by $(x_i)_{i\inΓ}\mapsto(x_{λ(i)})_{i\inΓ}$. In this paper we analyze and compute the algebraic entropy of a generalized shift, which turns out to depend on the cardinality of $K$, but mainly on the function $λ$. We give many examples showing that the generalized shifts provide a very useful universal tool for producing counter-examples.
An endomorphisms $φ$ of an abelian group $A$ is said inertial if each subgroup $H$ of $A$ has finite index in $H+φ(H)$. We study the ring of inertial endomorphisms of an abelian group. Here we obtain a satisfactory description modulo the ideal of finitary endomorphisms. Also the corresponding problem for vector spaces is considered. For the characterization of inertial endomorphisms of an abelian group see arXiv:1310.4625 . The group of invertible inertial endomorphisms has been studied in arXiv:1403.4193 .
We investigate the endomorphism monoids of certain finite $p$-groups of order $p^8$ first studied by Jonah and Konvisser in 1975 as examples for finite $p$-groups with abelian automorphism group, and we show some necessary conditions for a finite $p$-group to have commutative endomorphism monoid. As a by-product, apart from formulas for the number of conjugacy classes of endomorphisms of said groups, we will be able to derive the following: There exist nonabelian groups with commutative endomorphism monoid, and having commutative endomorphism monoid is a group property strictly stronger than h…
We describe inertial endomorphisms of an abelian group $A$, that is endomorphisms $φ$ with the property $|(φ(X)+X)/X|<\infty$ for each $X\le A$. They form a ring containing multiplications, the so-called finitary endomorphisms and non-trivial instances. We show that inertial invertible endomorphisms form a group, provided $A$ has finite torsion-free rank. In any case, the group $IAut(A)$ they generate is commutative modulo the group $FAut(A)$ of finitary automorphisms, which is known to be locally finite. We deduce that $IAut(A)$ is locally-(center-by-finite). Also we consider the lattice dual…
The new notion of adjoint algebraic entropy of endomorphisms of Abelian groups is introduced. Various examples and basic properties are provided. It is proved that the adjoint algebraic entropy of an endomorphism equals the algebraic entropy of the adjoint endomorphism of the Pontryagin dual. As applications, we compute the adjoint algebraic entropy of the shift endomorphisms of direct sums, and we prove an Addition Theorem for the adjoint algebraic entropy of bounded Abelian groups. A dichotomy is established, stating that the adjoint algebraic entropy of any endomorphism can take only values…
In this paper we study a relationship between elementary equivalence of endomorphism rings of Abelian p-groups and second order equivalence of the corresponding Abelian p-groups.
It is shown that the Baer-Kaplansky theorem can be extended to all abelian groups provided that the rings of endomorphisms of groups are replaced by trusses of endomorphisms of corresponding heaps. That is, every abelian group is determined up to isomorphism by its endomorphism truss and every isomorphism between two endomorphism trusses associated to some abelian groups $G$ and $H$ is induced by an isomorphism between $G$ and $H$ and an element from $H$. This correspondence is then extended to all modules over a ring by considering heaps of modules. It is proved that the truss of endomorphism…
Let G be a connected reductive algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. We study a generalization of the notion of G-complete reducibility in the context of Steinberg endomorphisms of G. Our main theorem extends a special case of a rationality result in this setting.
We obtain sufficient criteria for endomorphisms of torsion-free nilpotent groups of finite rank to be automorphisms, by considering the induced maps on the torsion-free abelianisation and the centre. Whilst these results are known in the finitely generated case removing this assumption introduces several difficulties.
Greither and Pareigis have established a connection between Hopf Galois structures on a Galois extension $L/K$ with Galois group $G$, and the regular subgroups of the group of permutations on $G$, which are normalized by $G$. Byott has rephrased this connection in terms of certain equivalence classes of injective morphisms of $G$ into the holomorph of the groups $N$ with the same cardinality of $G$. Childs and Corradino have used this theory to construct such Hopf Galois structures, starting from fixed-point-free endomorphisms of $G$ that have abelian images. In this paper we show that a fixed…
We give a sharp divisibility bound, in terms of g, for the degree of the field extension required to realize the endomorphisms of an abelian variety of dimension g over an arbitrary number field; this refines a result of Silverberg. This follows from a stronger result giving the same bound for the order of the component group of the Sato-Tate group of the abelian variety, which had been proved for abelian surfaces by Fite-Kedlaya-Rotger-Sutherland. The proof uses Minkowski's reduction method, but with some care required in the extremal cases when p equals 2 or a Fermat prime.
We obtain conditions of uniform continuity for endomorphisms of free-abelian times free groups for the product metric defined by taking the prefix metric in each component and establish an equivalence between uniform continuity for this metric and the preservation of a coarse-median, which was recently introduced by Fioravanti. Considering the extension of an endomorphism to the completion we count the number of orbits for the action of the subgroup of fixed points (resp. periodic) points on the set of infinite fixed (resp. periodic) points. Finally, we study the dynamics of infinite points: f…
We introduce the algebraic entropy for endomorphisms of arbitrary abelian groups, appropriately modifying existing notions of entropy. The basic properties of the algebraic entropy are given, as well as various examples. The main result of this paper is the Addition Theorem showing that the algebraic entropy is additive in appropriate sense with respect to invariant subgroups. We give several applications of the Addition Theorem, among them the Uniqueness Theorem for the algebraic entropy in the category of all abelian groups and their endomorphisms. Furthermore, we point out the delicate conn…
We obtain a simple family of solutions to the set-theoretic Yang-Baxter equation, one which depends only on considering special endomorphisms of a finite group. We show how such an endomorphism gives rise to two non-degenerate solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation, solutions which are inverse to each other. We give concrete examples using dihedral, alternating, symmetric, and metacyclic groups.
We give a characterization of those abelian groups which are direct sums of cyclic groups and the Jacobson radical of their endomorphism rings are closed. A complete characterization of $p$-groups $A$ for which $(EndA,\mathcal T_L)$ is locally compact, where $\mathcal T_L$ is the Liebert topology on $EndA$, is given. We prove that if $A$ is a countable elementary $p$-group then $EndA$ has a non-admissible ring topology. To every functorial topology on $A$ a right bounded ring topology on $EndA$ is attached. By using this topology we construct on $EndA$ a non-metrizable and non-admissibe ring t…
It is shown, for a given graph group $G$, that the fixed point subgroup Fix$\,φ$ is finitely generated for every endomorphism $φ$ of $G$ if and only if $G$ is a free product of free abelian groups. The same conditions hold for the subgroup of periodic points. Similar results are obtained for automorphisms, if the dependence graph of $G$ is a transitive forest.
We determine all finite p-groups that admit a faithful, self-similar action on the p-ary rooted tree such that the first level stabilizer is abelian. A group is in this class if and only if it is a split extension of an elementary abelian p-group by a cyclic group of order p. The proof is based on use of virtual endomorphisms. In this context the result says that if G is a finite p-group with abelian subgroup H of index p, then there exists a virtual endomorphism of G with trivial core and domain H if and only if G is a split extension of H and H is an elementary abelian p-group.
The construction of torsion-free abelian groups with prescribed endomorphism rings starting with Corner's seminal work is a well-studied subject in the theory of abelian groups. Usually these construction work by adding elements from a (topological) completion in order to get rid of (kill) unwanted homomorphisms. The critical part is to actually prove that every unwanted homomorphism can be killed by adding a suitable element. We will demonstrate that some of those constructions can be significantly simplified by choosing the elements at random. As a result, the endomorphism ring will be almos…

We sudy the behaviour of endomorphisms and automorphisms of groups involved in abelian group extensions. The main result can be stated as follows: Let $0\to N\to G\to Q \to 1$ be an abelian group extension. Then one has the following exact sequence of groups: $$0\to End^{N,Q}(G)\to End^Q_N(G)\to End_Q(N)\to H^2(Q,N)\to H^2(G,N)$$ where $End^{N,Q}(G)$ denotes the set of all endomorphisms of $G$ which centralise $N$ and induce identity on $Q$, $End^Q_N(G)$ denotes the set of all endomorphisms of $G$ which normalise $N$ and induce identity on $Q$ and $End_Q(N)$ denotes the set of endomorphisms of…
Recently the strings and the string number of self-maps were used in the computation of the algebraic entropy of special group endomorphisms. We introduce two special kinds of strings, and their relative string numbers. We show that a dichotomy holds for all these three string numbers; in fact, they admit only zero and infinity as values on group endomorphisms.
Recently the adjoint algebraic entropy of endomorphisms of abelian groups was introduced and studied. We generalize the notion of adjoint entropy to continuous endomorphisms of topological abelian groups. Indeed, the adjoint algebraic entropy is defined using the family of all finite-index subgroups, while we take only the subfamily of all open finite-index subgroups to define the topological adjoint entropy. This allows us to compare the (topological) adjoint entropy with the known topological entropy of continuous endomorphisms of compact abelian groups. In particular, the topological adjoin…
We obtain some general restrictions on the continuous endomorphisms of a profinite group G under the assumption that G has only finitely many open subgroups of each index (an assumption which automatically holds, for instance, if G is finitely generated). In particular, given such a group G and a continuous endomorphism phi we obtain a semidirect decomposition of G into a 'contracting' normal subgroup and a complement on which phi induces an automorphism; both the normal subgroup and the complement are closed. If G is isomorphic to a proper open subgroup of itself, we show that G has an infini…
We consider IA-endomorphisms (i.e., Identical in Abelianization) of a free metabelian group of finite rank, and give a matrix characterization of their fixed points which is similar to (yet different from) the well-known characterization of eigenvectors of a linear operator in a vector space. We then use our matrix characterization to elaborate several properties of the fixed point groups of metabelian endomorphisms. In particular, we show that the rank of the fixed point group of an IA-endomorphism of the free metabelian group of rank $n \ge 2$ can be either equal to 0, 1, or greater than $(n…
We study the locally compact abelian groups in the class $\mathfrak E_{<\infty}$, that is, having only continuous endomorphisms of finite topological entropy, and in its subclass $\mathfrak E_0$, that is, having all continuous endomorphisms with vanishing topological entropy. We discuss the reduction of the problem to the case of periodic locally compact abelian groups, and then to locally compact abelian $p$-groups. We show that locally compact abelian $p$-groups of finite rank belong to $\mathfrak E_{<\infty}$, and that those of them that belong to $\mathfrak E_0$ are precisely the ones with…
In [B] Bowen defined the growth rate of an endomorphism of a finitely generated group and related it to the entropy of a map $f:M \mapsto M$ on a compact manifold. In this note we study the purely group theoretic aspects of the growth rate of an endomorphism of a finitely generated group. We show that it is finite and bounded by the maximum length of the image of a generator. An equivalent formulation is given that ties the growth rate of an endomorphism to an increasing chain of subgroups. We then consider the relationship between growth rate of an endomorphism on a whole group and the growth…
We establish links between countable algebraically closed graphs and the endomorphisms of the countable universal graph $R$. As a consequence we show that, for any countable graph $Γ$, there are uncountably many maximal subgroups of the endomorphism monoid of $R$ isomorphic to the automorphism group of $Γ$. Further structural information about End $R$ is established including that Aut $Γ$ arises in uncountably many ways as a Schützenberger group. Similar results are proved for the countable universal directed graph and the countable universal bipartite graph.
The notion of entropy appears in many fields and this paper is a survey about entropies in several branches of Mathematics. We are mainly concerned with the topological and the algebraic entropy in the context of continuous endomorphisms of locally compact groups, paying special attention to the case of compact and discrete groups respectively. The basic properties of these entropies, as well as many examples, are recalled. Also new entropy functions are proposed, as well as generalizations of several known definitions and results. Furthermore we give some connections with other topics in Math…
Let $G$ be a group and let $X$ be an algebraic variety over an algebraically closed field $k$ of characteristic zero. Denote $A=X(k)$ the set of rational points of $X$. We investigate invertible algebraic cellular automata $τ\colon A^G \to A^G$ whose local defining map is induced by some morphism of algebraic varieties $X^M \to X$ where $M$ is a finite memory. When $G$ is locally embeddable into finite groups (LEF), then we show that the inverses of reversible algebraic cellular automata are automatically algebraic cellular automata. Generalizations are also obtained for finite product Hopfian…
Let $G$ be an amenable group and let $X$ be an irreducible complete algebraic variety over an algebraically closed field $K$. Let $A$ denote the set of $K$-points of $X$ and let $τ\colon A^G \to A^G$ be an algebraic cellular automaton over $(G,X,K)$, that is, a cellular automaton over the group $G$ and the alphabet $A$ whose local defining map is induced by a morphism of $K$-algebraic varieties. We introduce a weak notion of pre-injectivity for algebraic cellular automata, namely $(*)$-pre-injectivity, and prove that $τ$ is surjective if and only if it is $(*)$-pre-injective. In particular, $τ…
For a totally disconnected locally compact abelian group, we prove that the topological entropy of a continuous endomorphism coincides with the algebraic entropy of the dual endomorphism with respect to the Pontryagin duality. Moreover, this result is extended to all locally compact abelian groups under the assumption of additivity with respect to some fully invariant subgroups for both the topological and the algebraic entropy.
We characterize the groups isomorphic to full automorphism groups of ordered abelian groups. The result will follow from classical theorems on ordered groups adding an argument from proofs used to realize rings as endomorphism rings of abelian groups.
We prove that the growth rate of an endomorphism of a finitely generated nilpotent group equals to the growth rate of induced endomorphism on its abelinization, generalizing the corresponding result for an automorphism in [14]. We also study growth rates of endomorphisms for specific solvable groups, lattices of Sol, providing a counterexample to a known result in [5] and proving that the growth rate is an algebraic number.
We introduce the algebraic entropy for continuous endomorphisms of locally linearly compact vector spaces over a discrete field, as the natural extension of the algebraic entropy for endomorphisms of discrete vector spaces. We show that the main properties of entropy continue to hold in the general context of locally linearly compact vector spaces, in particular we extend the Addition Theorem.
We study the algebraic entropy of continuous endomorphisms of compactly covered, locally compact, topologically quasihamiltonian groups. We provide a Limit-free formula which helps us to simplify the computations of this entropy. Moreover, several Addition Theorems are given. In particular, we prove that the Addition Theorem holds for endomorphisms of quasihamiltonian torsion FC-groups (e.g., Hamiltonian groups).
The algebraic entropy h, defined for endomorphisms f of abelian groups G, measures the growth of the trajectories of non-empty finite subsets F of G with respect to f. We show that this growth can be either polynomial or exponential. The greatest f-invariant subgroup of G where this growth is polynomial coincides with the greatest f-invariant subgroup P(G,f) of G (named Pinsker subgroup of f) such that h(f|_P(G,f))=0. We obtain also an alternative characterization of P(G,f) from the point of view of the quasi-periodic points of f. This gives the following application in ergodic theory: for eve…
Let $G$ be a group. Let $X$ be a connected algebraic group over an algebraically closed field $K$. Denote by $A=X(K)$ the set of $K$-points of $X$. We study a class of endomorphisms of pro-algebraic groups, namely algebraic group cellular automata over $(G,X,K)$. They are cellular automata $τ\colon A^G \to A^G$ whose local defining map is induced by a homomorphism of algebraic groups $X^M \to X$ where $M\subset G$ is a finite memory set of $τ$. Our first result is that when $G$ is sofic, such an algebraic group cellular automaton $τ$ is invertible whenever it is injective and $\text{char}(K)=0…
