We consider IA-endomorphisms (i.e., Identical in Abelianization) of a free metabelian group of finite rank, and give a matrix characterization of their fixed points which is similar to (yet different from) the well-known characterization of eigenvectors of a linear operator in a vector space. We then use our matrix characterization to elaborate several properties of the fixed point groups of metabelian endomorphisms. In particular, we show that the rank of the fixed point group of an IA-endomorphism of the free metabelian group of rank $n \ge 2$ can be either equal to 0, 1, or greater than $(n-1)$ (in particular, it can be infinite). We also point out a connection between these properties of metabelian IA-endomorphisms and some properties of the Gassner representation of pure braid groups.
We construct an example of an IA-automorphism of the free metabelian group of rank $n\geq 3$ without nontrivial fixed points. That gives a negative answer to the question raised by Shpilrain. By a result of Bachmuth \cite{Ba1}, such an automorphism does not exist if the rank is equal to 2.
For each odd prime p>=5, there exist finite p-groups G with derived quotient G/D(G)=C(p)xC(p) and nearly constant transfer kernel type k(G)=(1,2,...,2) having two fixed points. It is proved that, for p=7, this type k(G) with the simplest possible case of logarithmic abelian quotient invariants t(G)=(11111,111,21,21,21,21,21,21) of the eight maximal subgroups is realized by exactly 98 non-metabelian Schur sigma-groups S of order 7^11 with fixed derived length dl(S)=3 and metabelianizations S/D(D(S)) of order 7^7. For p=5, the type k(G) with t(G)=(2111,111,21,21,21,21) leads to infinitely many n…
We give an algorithm which computes the fixed subgroup and the stable image for any endomorphism of the free group of rank two $F_2$, answering for $F_2$ a question posed by Stallings in 1984 and a question of Ventura.
Let $G=\ast_{i=1}^{n}G_{i}$ and let $ϕ$ be a symmetric endomorphism of $G$. If $ϕ$ is a monomorphism or if $G$ is a finitely generated residually finite group, then the fixed subgroup $Fix(ϕ)=\{g\in G:ϕ(g)=g\}$ of $ϕ$ has Kurosh rank at most $n$.
We prove that for any finitely generated relatively hyperbolic group G and any symmetric endomorphism f of G with relatively quasiconvex image, Fixf is relatively quasiconvex subgroup of G.
Rodaro and Silva proved that the fixed points submonoid and the periodic points submonoid of a trace monoid endomorphism are always finitely generated. We show that for finitely generated left preGarside monoids, that includs finitely generated preGarside monoids, Garside monoids and Artin monoids, the fixed and periodic points submonoids of any endomorphism are also finitely generated left preGarside monoids under some condition, and in the case of Artin monoids, these submonoids are always Artin monoids too. We also prove algebraically some inequalities, equivalences and non-equivalences bet…
It is shown, for a given graph group $G$, that the fixed point subgroup Fix$\,φ$ is finitely generated for every endomorphism $φ$ of $G$ if and only if $G$ is a free product of free abelian groups. The same conditions hold for the subgroup of periodic points. Similar results are obtained for automorphisms, if the dependence graph of $G$ is a transitive forest.
We consider the subgroup of points of finite orbit through the action of an endomorphism of a virtually free group, with particular emphasis on the subgroup of eventually fixed points, EvFix($φ$): points whose orbit contains a fixed point. We provide an algorithm to compute the subgroup of fixed points of an endomorphism of a finitely generated virtually free group and prove that finite orbits have cardinality bounded by a computable constant, which allows us to solve several algorithmic problems: deciding if $φ$ is a finite order element of End($G$), if $φ$ is aperiodic, if EvFix($φ$) is fini…
The Addition Theorem for the algebraic entropy of group endomorphisms of torsion abelian groups was proved in [4]. Later, this result was extended to all abelian groups [3] and, recently, to all torsion finitely quasihamiltonian groups [7]. In contrast, when it comes to metabelian groups, the additivity of the algebraic entropy fails [8]. Continuing the research within the class of locally finite groups, we prove that the Addition Theorem holds for two-step nilpotent torsion groups.
We describe the endomorphisms of the direct product of two free groups of finite rank and obtain conditions for which the subgroup of fixed points is finitely generated and we do the same for periodic points. We also describe the automorphisms of such a group and solve the three Whitehead problems for automorphisms, monomorphisms and endomorphisms for groups in this class. We also obtain conditions for an endomorphism to be uniformly continuous when a suitable metric is considered and study infinite fixed points of the extension to the completion of the group.
It is proved that the fixed point submonoid and the periodic point submonoid of a trace monoid endomorphism are always finitely generated. Considering the Foata normal form metric on trace monoids and uniformly continuous endomorphisms, a finiteness theorem is proved for the infinite fixed points of the continuous extension to real traces.
Actions on hyperbolic metric spaces are an important tool for studying groups, and so it is natural, but difficult, to attempt to classify all such actions of a fixed group. In this paper, we build strong connections between hyperbolic geometry and commutative algebra in order to classify the cobounded hyperbolic actions of numerous metabelian groups up to a coarse equivalence. In particular, we turn this classification problem into the problems of classifying ideals in the completions of certain rings and calculating invariant subspaces of matrices. We use this framework to classify the cobou…
Greither and Pareigis have established a connection between Hopf Galois structures on a Galois extension $L/K$ with Galois group $G$, and the regular subgroups of the group of permutations on $G$, which are normalized by $G$. Byott has rephrased this connection in terms of certain equivalence classes of injective morphisms of $G$ into the holomorph of the groups $N$ with the same cardinality of $G$. Childs and Corradino have used this theory to construct such Hopf Galois structures, starting from fixed-point-free endomorphisms of $G$ that have abelian images. In this paper we show that a fixed…
For a closed surface $S$ with $χ(S)<0$, we show that the fixed subgroup of a family $\mathcal B$ of endomorphisms of $π_1(S)$ has $\rk \fix\mathcal B\leq \rk π_1(S)$. In particular, if $\mathcal B$ contains a non-epimorphic endomorphism, then $\rk \fix\mathcal B\leq \frac{1}{2} \rk π_1(S)$. We also show that geometric subgroups of $π_1(S)$ are inert, and hence the fixed subgroup of a family of epimorphisms of $π_1(S)$ is also inert.
A fixed point theorem is proved for inverse transducers, leading to an automata-theoretic proof of the fixed point subgroup of an endomorphism of a finitely generated virtually free group being finitely generated. If the endomorphism is uniformly continuous for the hyperbolic metric, it is proved that the set of regular fixed points in the hyperbolic boundary has finitely many orbits under the action of the finite fixed points. In the automorphism case, it is shown that these regular fixed points are either exponentially stable attractors or exponentially stable repellers.
The fixed point building of a polarity of a Moufang quadrangle of type $F_4$ is a Moufang set, as is the fixed point building of a semi-linear automorphism of order $2$ of a Moufang octagon that stabilizes at least two panels of one type but none of the other. We show that these two classes of Moufang sets are, in fact, the same, that each member of this class can be constructed as the fixed point building of a group of order $4$ acting on a building of type $F_4$ and that the group generated by all the root groups of any one of these Moufang sets is simple.
We obtain a simple family of solutions to the set-theoretic Yang-Baxter equation, one which depends only on considering special endomorphisms of a finite group. We show how such an endomorphism gives rise to two non-degenerate solutions to the Yang-Baxter equation, solutions which are inverse to each other. We give concrete examples using dihedral, alternating, symmetric, and metacyclic groups.
Indices of fixed point classes play a central role in Nielsen fixed point theory. Jiang-Wang-Zhang proved that for selfmaps of graphs and surfaces, the index of any fixed point class has an upper bound called its characteristic. In this paper, we study the difference between the index and the characteristic for selfmaps of graphs. First, for free groups, we extend attracting fixed words at infinity of automorphisms into that of injective endomorphisms. Then, by using relative train track technique, we show that the difference mentioned above is quite likely to be the number of equivalence clas…
We give an explicit characterization of which direct products $G$ of surface groups of Euclidean type satisfy that the fixed subgroup of any automorphism (or endomorphism) of $G$ is compressed, and of which is it always inert.
It is proved that the periodic point submonoid of a free inverse monoid endomorphism is always finitely generated. Using Chomsky's hierarchy of languages, we prove that the fixed point submonoid of an endomorphism of a free inverse monoid can be represented by a context-sensitive language but, in general, it cannot be represented by a context-free language.
We obtain conditions of uniform continuity for endomorphisms of free-abelian times free groups for the product metric defined by taking the prefix metric in each component and establish an equivalence between uniform continuity for this metric and the preservation of a coarse-median, which was recently introduced by Fioravanti. Considering the extension of an endomorphism to the completion we count the number of orbits for the action of the subgroup of fixed points (resp. periodic) points on the set of infinite fixed (resp. periodic) points. Finally, we study the dynamics of infinite points: f…
Let $F$ be a finitely generated free group. We present an algorithm such that, given a subgroup $H\leqslant F$, decides whether $H$ is the fixed subgroup of some family of automorphisms, or family of endomorphisms of $F$ and, in the affirmative case, finds such a family. The algorithm combines both combinatorial and geometric methods.
For an odd prime $p$ and a positive integer $n$, it is well known that there are two types of extra-special $p$-groups of order $p^{2n+1}$, first one is the Heisenberg group which has exponent $p$ and the second one is of exponent $p^2$. In this article, a new way of representing the extra-special $p$-group of exponent $p^2$ is given. These representations facilitate an explicit way of finding formulae for any endomorphism and any automorphism of an extra-special $p$-group $G$ for both the types. Based on these formulae, the endomorphism semigroup $End(G)$ and the automorphism group $Aut(G)$ a…
We prove that every mapping torus of any free group endomorphism is residually finite. We show how to use a not yet published result of E. Hrushovski to extend our result to arbitrary linear groups. The proof uses algebraic self-maps of affine spaces over finite fields. In particular, we prove that when such a map is dominant, the set of its fixed closed scheme points is Zariski dense in the affine space.
We prove a generalization of the fellow traveller property for a certain type of quasi-geodesics and use it to present three equivalent geometric formulations of the bounded reduction property and prove that it is equivalent to preservation of a coarse median. We then provide an affirmative answer to a question from Araújo and Silva as to whether every nontrivial uniformly continuous endomorphism of a hyperbolic group with respect to a visual metric satisfies a Hölder condition. We remark that these results combined with the work done by Paulin prove that every endomorphism admitting a continu…
Idempotents yield much insight in the structure of finite semigroups and semirings. In this article, we obtain some results on (multiplicatively) idempotents of the endomorphism semiring of a finite chain. We prove that the set of all idempotents with certain fixed points is a semiring and find its order. We further show that this semiring is an ideal in a well known semiring. The construction of an equivalence relation such that any equivalence class contain just one idempotent is proposed. In our main result we prove that such equivalence class is a semiring and find his order. We prove that…
Let $R(ϕ)$ be the number of $ϕ$-conjugacy (or Reidemeister) classes of an endomorphism $ϕ$ of a group $G$. We prove for several classes of groups (including polycyclic) that the number $R(ϕ)$ is equal to the number of fixed points of the induced map of an appropriate subspace of the unitary dual space $\widehat G$, when $R(ϕ)<\infty$. Applying the result to iterations of $ϕ$ we obtain Gauss congruences for Reidemeister numbers. In contrast with the case of automorphisms, studied previously, we have a plenty of examples having the above finiteness condition, even among groups with $R_\infty$ pr…
For a compact surface $Σ$ (orientable or not, and with boundary or not) we show that the fixed subgroup, $\operatorname{Fix} B$, of any family $B$ of endomorphisms of $π_1(Σ)$ is compressed in $π_1(Σ)$ i.e., $\operatorname{rk}((\operatorname{Fix} B)\cap H)\leq \operatorname{rk}(H)$ for any subgroup $\operatorname{Fix} B \leq H \leq π_1(Σ)$. On the way, we give a partial positive solution to the inertia conjecture, both for free and for surface groups. We also investigate direct products, $G$, of finitely many free and surface groups, and give a characterization of when $G$ satisfies that $\ope…
The classical result by Dyer--Scott about fixed subgroups of finite order automorphisms of $F_n$ being free factors of $F_n$ is no longer true in $Z^m\times F_n$. Within this more general context, we prove a relaxed version in the spirit of Bestvina--Handel Theorem: the rank of fixed subgroups of finite order automorphisms is uniformly bounded in terms of $m,n$. We also study periodic points of endomorphisms of $Z^m\times F_n$, and give an algorithm to compute auto-fixed closures of finitely generated subgroups of $Z^m\times F_n$. On the way, we prove the analog of Day's Theorem for real eleme…
For a finite abelian group $A$, the Reidemeister number of an endomorphism $φ$ equals the size of $\mathrm{Fix}(φ)$, the set of fixed points of $φ$. Consequently, the Reidemeister spectrum of $A$ is a subset of the set of divisors of $|A|$. We fully determine the Reidemeister spectrum of $|A|$, that is, which divisors of $|A|$ occur as the Reidemeister number of an automorphism. To do so, we discuss and prove a more general result providing upper and lower bounds on the number of fixed points of automorphisms related to a given automorphism $φ$.
We consider expansive group actions on a compact metric space containing a special fixed point denoted by $0$, and endomorphisms of such systems whose forward trajectories are attracted toward $0$. Such endomorphisms are called asymptotically nilpotent, and we study the conditions in which they are nilpotent, that is, map the entire space to $0$ in a finite number of iterations. We show that for a large class of discrete groups, this property of nil-rigidity holds for all expansive actions that satisfy a natural specification-like property and have dense homoclinic points. Our main result in p…
We study direct products of free-abelian and free groups with special emphasis on algorithmic problems. After giving natural extensions of standard notions into that family, we find an explicit expression for an arbitrary endomorphism of $\ZZ^m \times F_n$. These tools are used to solve several algorithmic and decision problems for $\ZZ^m \times F_n $: the membership problem, the isomorphism problem, the finite index problem, the subgroup and coset intersection problems, the fixed point problem, and the Whitehead problem.
A subgroup $H$ of a free group $F$ is called inert in $F$ if for every $G < F$ the rank of the intersection of $H$ with $G$ is no grater than the rank of $G$. In this paper we expand the known families of inert subgroups. We show that the inertia property holds for 1-generator endomorphisms. Equivalently, echelon subgroups in free groups are inert. An echelon subgroup is defined through a set of generators that are in echelon form with respect to some ordered basis of the free group, and may be seen as a generalization of a free factor. For example, the fixed subgroups of automorphisms of fini…
