The Addition Theorem for the algebraic entropy of group endomorphisms of torsion abelian groups was proved in [4]. Later, this result was extended to all abelian groups [3] and, recently, to all torsion finitely quasihamiltonian groups [7]. In contrast, when it comes to metabelian groups, the additivity of the algebraic entropy fails [8]. Continuing the research within the class of locally finite groups, we prove that the Addition Theorem holds for two-step nilpotent torsion groups.
We describe an algorithm for deciding whether or not a given finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent group is decomposable as the direct product of nontrivial subgroups.
We show that a torsion-free nilpotent loop (that is, a loop nilpotent with respect to the dimension filtration) has a torsion-free nilpotent left multiplication group of, at most, the same class. We also prove that a free loop is residually torsion-free nilpotent and that the same holds for any free commutative loop. Although this last result is much stronger than the usual residual nilpotency of the free loop proved by Higman, it is proved, essentially, by the same method.
A famous result of Hall asserts that the multiplication and exponentiation in finitely generated torsion free nilpotent groups can be described by rational polynomials. We describe an algorithm to determine such polynomials for all torsion free nilpotent groups of given Hirsch length. We apply this to determine the Hall polynomials for all such groups of Hirsch length at most 7.
In this paper we study distortion of various well-known embeddings of finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent groups $G$ into unitriangular groups $UT_n(\mathbb{Z})$. We also provide a polynomial time algorithm for finding distortion of a given subgroup of $G$
In this paper we study the property of geometric equivalence of groups introduced by B. Plotkin \cite{P1, P2}. Sufficient and necessary conditions are presented for a $π$-torsion-free nilpotent group to be geometrically equivalent to its $π$-completion. We prove that a relatively free nilpotent $π$-torsion-free group and its $π$-completion define the same quasi-variety. Examples of $π$-torsion-free nilpotent groups that are geometrically equivalent to their $π$-completions are given.
For every finite $p$-group $G_p$ that is non-cyclic and non-quaternion and every positive integer $\ell\neq p$ that is greater than $2$, we prove the first non-trivial bound on $\ell$-torsion in class group of every $G_p$-extension. More generally, for every nilpotent group $G$ where every Sylow-$p$ subgroup $G_p\subset G$ is non-cyclic and non-quaternion, we prove a non-trivial bound on $\ell$-torsion in class group of every $G$-extension for every integer $\ell>1$.
We obtain sufficient criteria for endomorphisms of torsion-free nilpotent groups of finite rank to be automorphisms, by considering the induced maps on the torsion-free abelianisation and the centre. Whilst these results are known in the finitely generated case removing this assumption introduces several difficulties.
Since the work of Jennings (1955), it is well-known that any finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent group can be embedded into unitriangular integer matrices $UT_N(Z)$ for some $N$. In 2006, Nickel proposed an algorithm to calculate such embeddings. In this work, we show that if $UT_n(Z)$ is embedded into $UT_N(Z)$ using Nickel's algorithm, then $N \geq 2^{n/2 -2}$ if the standard ordering of the Mal'cev basis (as in Nickel's original paper) is used. In particular, we establish an exponential worst-case running time of Nickel's algorithm. On the other hand, we also prove a general exponenti…
The authors have shown previously that every locally pro-p contraction group decomposes into the direct product of a p-adic analytic factor and a torsion factor. It has long been known that p-adic analytic contraction groups are nilpotent. We show here that the torsion factor is nilpotent too, and hence that every locally pro-p contraction group is nilpotent.
A theorem by Hall asserts that the multiplication in torsion free nilpotent groups of finite Hirsch length can be facilitated by polynomials. In this note we exhibit explicit Hall polynomials for the torsion free nilpotent groups of Hirsch length at most 5.
We consider a natural class of long range random walks on torsion free nilpotent groups and develop limit theorems for these walks. Given the original discrete group $Γ$ and a random walk $(S_n)_ {n\ge1}$ driven by a certain type of symmetric probability measure $μ$, we construct a homogeneous nilpotent Lie group $G_\bullet(Γ,μ)$ which carries an adapted dilation structure and a stable-like process $(X_t)_{ t\ge0}$ which appears in a Donsker-type functional limit theorem as the limit of a rescaled version of the random walk. Both the limit group and the limit process on that group depend on th…
We show that the pure cactus group $Γ_{n+1}$ is residually nilpotent and exhibit a surjective homomorphism $Γ_{n+1} \to (\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z})^{2^n-n(n+1)/2-1}$ whose kernel is residually torsion-free nilpotent.
We show that torsion-free finitely generated nilpotent groups are characterised by their group C*-algebras and we additionally recover their nilpotency class as well as the subquotients of the upper central series. We then use a C*-bundle decomposition and apply K-theoretic methods based on noncommutative tori to prove that every torsion-free finitely generated 2-step nilpotent group can be recovered from its group C*-algebra.
Motivated by a classic result for free groups, one says that a group $G$ has the Magnus property if the following holds: whenever two elements generate the same normal subgroup of $G$, they are conjugate or inverse-conjugate in $G$. It is a natural problem to find out which relatively free groups display the Magnus property. We prove that a free polynilpotent group of any given class row has the Magnus property if and only if it is nilpotent of class at most $2$. For this purpose we explore the Magnus property more generally in soluble groups, and we produce new techniques, both for establishi…
We investigate the Reidemeister spectrum of direct products of nilpotent groups. More specifically, we prove that the Reidemeister spectra of the individual factors yield complete information for the Reidemeister spectrum of the direct product if all groups are finitely generated torsion-free nilpotent and have a directly indecomposable rational Malcev completion. We show this by determining the complete automorphism group of the direct product.
We give a new obstruction to translation-like actions on nilpotent groups. Suppose we are given two finitely generated torsion free nilpotent groups with the same degree of polynomial growth, but non-isomorphic Carnot completions (asymptotic cones). We show that there exists no injective Lipschitz function from one group to the other. It follows that neither group can act translation-like on the other.
We present a constructive approach to torsion-free gradings of Lie algebras. Our main result is the computation of a maximal grading. Given a Lie algebra, using its maximal grading we enumerate all of its torsion-free gradings as well as its positive gradings. As applications, we classify gradings in low dimension, we consider the enumeration of Heintze groups, and we give methods to find bounds for non-vanishing $\ell^{q,p}$ cohomology.
Let $G$ be a random torsion-free nilpotent group generated by two random words of length $\ell$ in $U_n(\mathbb{Z})$. Letting $\ell$ grow as a function of $n$, we analyze the step of $G$, which is bounded by the step of $U_n(\mathbb{Z})$. We prove a conjecture of Delp, Dymarz, and Schafer-Cohen, that the threshold function for full step is $\ell = n^2$.
We prove that Knapsack problem (KP) is undecidable for any group of nilpotency class two if the number of generators (without torsion) of the derived subgroup is at least 322. This result together with the fact that if KP is undecidable for a subgroup then it undecidable for the whole group allows us extend our result to certain classes of polycyclic groups, linear groups and nilpotent groups of higher nilpotency class.
We study finite-dimensional nonassociative algebras. We prove the implicit function theorem for such algebras. This allows us to establish a correspondence between such algebras and quasigroups, in the spirit of classical correspondence between divisible torsion-free nilpotent groups and rational nilpotent Lie algebras. We study the related questions of the commensurators of nilpotent groups, filiform Lie algebras of maximal solvability length and partially ordered algebras.
Let S be a finite generating set of a torsion-free, nilpotent group G. We show that every automorphism of the Cayley graph Cay(G;S) is affine. (That is, every automorphism of the graph is obtained by composing a group automorphism with multiplication by an element of the group.) More generally, we show that if Cay(G;S) and Cay(G';S') are connected Cayley graphs of finite valency on two nilpotent groups G and G', then every isomorphism from Cay(G;S) to Cay(G';S') factors through to a well-defined affine map from G/N to G'/N', where N and N' are the torsion subgroups of G and G', respectively. F…
We show that for every finitely presented pro-$p$ nilpotent-by-abelian-by-finite group $G$ there is an upper bound on $\dim_{\mathbb{Q}_p} (H_1(M, \mathbb{Z}_p) \otimes_{\mathbb{Z}_p} \mathbb{Q}_p )$, as $M$ runs through all pro-$p$ subgroups of finite index in $G$.
