I give a brief review of advances in the strong interaction theory. This talk was delivered at the Conference in honor of Murray Gell-Mann's 80th birthday, 24-26 February 2010, Singapore.
Evidence is discussed, from lattice simulations, that QCD vacuum is a dual superconductor in the confining phase, and undergoes a phase transition to normal at the deconfining temperature.
We study the gauge-invariant gaussian ansatz for the vacuum wave functional and show that it potentially possesses many desirable features of the Yang--Mills theory, like asymptotic freedom, mass generation through the transmutation of dimensions and a linear potential between static quarks. We point out that these (and other) features can be studied in a systematic way by combining perturbative and 1/n expansions. Contrary to the euclidean approach, confinement can be easily formulated and easily built in, if not derived, in the variational Schroedinger approach.
We present a nontechnical review of the current understanding of the phenomenon of color confinement. The emphasis is put on recent advances. This is a combined and slightly expanded version of talks delivered at 14th International QCD Conference "QCD 08," 7-12th July 2008, Montpellier, France, the International Conference "Quark Confinement and the Hadron Spectrum," Mainz, Germany, September 1-6, 2008 (Confinement 08), and the International Conference "Approaches to Quantum Chromodynamics," Oberwoelz, Austria, September 7-13, 2008.
It has been noticed that confinement effects can be described by the addition of a $ \sqrt {- F_{μν}^a F^{aμν}} $ term in the Lagrangian density. We now study the combined effect of such "confinement term" and that of a mass term. The surprising result is that the interplay between these two terms gives rise to a Coulomb interaction. Our picture has a certain correspondence with the quasiconfinement picture described by Giles, Jaffe and de Rujula for QCD with symmetry breaking.
Several distinct mechanisms of confinement and dynamical symmetry breaking (DSB) are identified, in a class of supersymmetric $SU(n_c)$, $USp(2n_c)$ and $SO(n_c)$ gauge theories. In some of the vacua, the magnetic monopoles carrying nontrivial flavor quantum numbers condense, causing confinement and symmetry breaking simultaneously. In more general classes of vacua, however, the effective low-energy degrees of freedom are found to be constituents of the monopoles - dual (magnetic) quarks. These magnetic quarks condense and give rise to confinement and DSB. We find two more important classes of…
The aim of this talk is to give a brief introduction to the problem of confinement in QCD and to N=2 globally supersymmetric Yang-Mills gauge theories (SYM). While avoiding technicalities as much as possible I will try to emphasize the physical ideas which lie behind the picture of confinement as a consequence of the vacua of QCD to be a dual superconductor. Finally I review the implementation of this picture in the framework of N=2 SYM.
I review the main features of our model of the 4-dimensional Yang-Mills theory vacuum as a liquid of fractional instantons. The model provides a possible microscopic mechanism for Confinement in four dimensional Yang-Mills theory at $T=0$. It also connects this property to other non-perturbative properties of the theory which can be explained by the same model. This paper is a, somewhat enlarged, written up version of my recent talks on the subject given at ICTS-Bangalore, KITP-Santa Barbara and IMSC-Chennai.
Field correlators and the string representation are used as two complementary approaches for the description of confinement in the SU(N)-inspired dual Abelian-Higgs-type model. In the London limit of the simplest, SU(2)-inspired, model, bilocal electric field-strength correlators have been derived with accounting for the contributions to these averages produced by closed dual strings. The Debye screening in the plasma of such strings yields a novel long-range interaction between points lying on the contour of the Wilson loop. This interaction generates a Luescher-type term, even when one restr…
We give a theoretical framework for defining and extracting non-Abelian magnetic monopoles in a gauge-invariant way in SU(N) Yang-Mills theory to study quark confinement. Then we give numerical evidences that the non-Abelian magnetic monopole defined in this way gives a dominant contribution to confinement of fundamental quarks in SU(3) Yang-Mills theory, which is in sharp contrast to the SU(2) case in which Abelian magnetic monopoles play the dominant role for quark confinement.
First, we give a gauge-independent definition of chromomagnetic monopoles in $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory which is derived through a non-Abelian Stokes theorem for the Wilson loop operator. Then we discuss how such magnetic monopoles can give a nontrivial contribution to the Wilson loop operator for understanding the area law of the Wilson loop average. Next, we discuss how the magnetic monopole condensation picture are compatible with the vortex condensation picture as another promising scenario for quark confinement. We analyze the profile function of the magnetic flux tube as the non-Abelian v…
We discuss the conformal field theory and string field theory of the NSR superstring using a BRST operator with a nonminimal term, which allows all bosonic ghost modes to be paired into creation and annihilation operators. Vertex operators for the Neveu-Schwarz and Ramond sectors have the same ghost number, as do string fields. The kinetic and interaction terms are the same for Neveu-Schwarz as for Ramond string fields, so spacetime supersymmetry is closer to being manifest. The kinetic terms and supersymmetry don't mix levels, simplifying component analysis and gauge fixing.
Some years ago Gribov developed the so-called supercritical light quark confinement scenario. Based on physical arguments he conjectured a drastic change in the analytical properties of the quark propagator when the back-reaction of Goldstone bosons (pions) is considered. We investigate this scenario and provide numerical solutions for the quark propagator in the complex plane with and without the pion back-reaction. We find no evidence for the scenario Gribov advocated. As an aside we present a novel method to solve the quark Dyson-Schwinger equation in the complex plane and discuss new chara…
We discuss how the perturbative particle paradigm fails in certain background with space-like singularity but asymptotically flat which should admit a S-matrix. The Feynman approach relies on the interaction picture. This approach means that we can interpret interactions as exchanges of particles. Particles are the modes of the quadratic part of the Lagrangian. In certain backgrounds with space-like singularity the interaction Hamiltonian is well defined but the perturbative expansion of the evolution operator through the singularity and the perturbative $S$ matrix do not exist. On the other h…
In this lecture I will explain the established pictures of the QCD vacuum and, in particular, the underlying confinement mechanism. These are: the magnetic monopole condensation (dual Meißner effect), the center vortex picture and the Gribov--Zwanziger picture. I will start by giving a survey of the common order and disorder parameters of confinement: the temporal and spatial Wilson loop, the Polyakov loop and the 't Hooft loop. Next the dual Meißner effect, which assumes a condensate of magnetic monopoles, will be explained as a picture of confinement. I will also show how magnetic monopoles …
In this review, we provide a short outlook of some of the currently most popular pictures and promising approaches to non-perturbative physics and confinement in gauge theories. A qualitative and by no means exhaustive discussion presented here covers such key topics as the phases of QCD matter, the order parameters for confinement, the central vortex and monopole pictures of the QCD vacuum structure, fundamental properties of the string tension, confinement realisations in gauge-Higgs and Yang-Mills theories, magnetic order/disorder phase transition among others.
It is very plausible that confinement in QCD comes from linking of Wilson loops to finite-thickness vortices with magnetic fluxes corresponding to the center of the gauge group. The vortices are solitons of a gauge-invariant QCD action representing the generation of gluon mass. There are a number of other solitonic states of this action. We discuss here what we call nexus solitons, in which for gauge group SU(N), up to N vortices meet a a center, or nexus, provided that the total flux of the vortices adds to zero (mod N). There are fundamentally two kinds of nexuses: Quasi-Abelian, which can b…
The purpose of this paper is to review the recent progress in understanding quark confinement. The emphasis of this review is placed on how to obtain a manifestly gauge-independent picture for quark confinement supporting the dual superconductivity in the Yang-Mills theory, which should be compared with the Abelian projection proposed by 't Hooft. The basic tools are novel reformulations of the Yang-Mills theory based on change of variables extending the decomposition of the $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills field due to Cho, Duan-Ge and Faddeev-Niemi, together with the combined use of extended versions of t…
The hidden local symmetry is a successful model to describe the properties of the vector mesons in QCD. We point out that if we identify this hidden gauge theory as the magnetic picture of QCD, a linearized version of the model simultaneously describes color confinement and chiral symmetry breaking. We demonstrate that such a structure can be seen in the Seiberg dual picture of a softly broken supersymmetric QCD. The model possesses exact chiral symmetry and reduces to QCD when mass parameters are taken to be large. Working in the regime of the small mass parameters, we show that there is a va…
We present arguments suggesting that large size overlapping instantons are the driving mechanism of the confinement-deconfinement phase transition at nonzero chemical potential mu. The arguments are based on the picture that instantons at very large chemical potential in the weak coupling regime are localized configurations with finite size ρ\simμ^{-1}. At the same time, the same instantons at smaller chemical potential in the strong coupling regime are well represented by the so-called instanton-quarks with fractional topological charge 1/N_c. We estimate the critical chemical potential mu_c(…
The formalism of matrix product states is used to perform a numerical study of 1+1 dimensional QED -- also known as the (massive) Schwinger model -- in the presence of an external static `quark' and `antiquark'. We obtain a detailed picture of the transition from the confining state at short interquark distances to the broken-string `hadronized' state at large distances and this for a wide range of couplings, recovering the predicted behavior both in the weak and strong coupling limit of the continuum theory. In addition to the relevant local observables like charge and electric field, we comp…
We confront the big bang for the beginning of the universe with an equivalent picture of a slow freeze - a very cold and slowly evolving universe. In the freeze picture the masses of elementary particles increase and the gravitational constant decreases with cosmic time, while the Newtonian attraction remains unchanged. The freeze and big bang pictures both describe the same observations or physical reality. We present a simple "crossover model" without a big bang singularity. In the infinite past space-time is flat. Our model is compatible with present observations, describing the generation …
Within the picture of quark confinement as due to a \textit{color event horizon}, and of hadronization as an instance of the Unruh radiation for the strong force, we show here that QCD entropy, evaluated by lattice simulations in the region $T_c < T < 1.3 T_c$, is in reasonable agreement with a melting color event horizon.
Confinement is explained via field correlators, and the latter are calculated via gluelumps. Behavior of gluelump Green's function at small and large distances yields gluonic condensate and vacuum correlation length respectively and allows to check the consistency of the whole picture.
Heavy ion collisions quickly form a droplet of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) with a remarkably small viscosity. We give an accessible introduction to how to study this smallest and hottest droplet of liquid made on earth and why it is so interesting. The physics of heavy ions ranges from highly energetic quarks and gluons described by perturbative QCD to a bath of strongly interacting gluons at lower energy scales. These gluons quickly thermalize and form QGP, while the energetic partons traverse this plasma and end in a shower of particles called jets. Analyzing the final particles in a variety of…
We study gluodynamics in an external Abelian electromagnetic field within the dual superconductor approach. We show that the SU(2) gluodynamics should possess a deconfining phase transition at zero temperature at certain value of the external field. A dual superconductor model for the SU(3) gauge theory in external field predicts a rich phase structure containing confinement, asymmetric confinement and deconfinement phases. These results can be used to check the validity of the dual superconductor description of gluodynamics in external fields. We also discuss the gauge-independence of the obt…
Aspects of the monopole condensation picture of confinement are discussed. First, the nature of the monopole singularities in the abelian projection approach is analysed. Their apparent gauge dependence is shown to have a natural interpretation in terms of 't~Hooft-Polyakov-like monopoles in euclidean SU(2) gauge theory. Next, the results and predictions of a realization of confinement through condensation of such monopoles are summarized and compared with numerical data.
The color-flavor locking phenomenon in the magnetic picture can be the microscopic description of the quark confinement in QCD. We demonstrate it in an N=2 supersymmetric SU(Nc)xSU(Nc) quiver gauge theory coupled to Nf flavors of quarks (Nf<Nc). This model reduces to SU(Nc) gauge theory with Nf flavors when the vacuum expectations value of the link field is much larger than the dynamical scales, and thus provides a continuous deformation of the N=2 supersymmetric QCD. We study a vacuum which survives upon adding a superpotential term to reduce to N=1 while preserving the vectorial SU(Nf) flavo…
A constituent parton picture of hadrons with logarithmic confinement naturally arises in weak coupling light-front QCD. Confinement provides a mass gap that allows the constituent picture to emerge. The effective renormalized Hamiltonian is computed to ${\cal O}(g^2)$, and used to study charmonium and bottomonium. Radial and angular excitations can be used to fix the coupling $α$, the quark mass $M$, and the cutoff $Λ$. The resultant hyperfine structure is very close to experiment.
Hadron decay widths are shown to increase in strong magnetic fields as $Γ(eB) \sim \frac{eB}κ Γ(0)$. The same mechanism is shown to be present in the production of the sea quark pair inside the confining string, which decreases the string tension with the growing $eB$ parallel to the string . On the other hand, the average energy of the $q\bar q$ holes in the string world sheet increases, when the direction of $\mathbf{B}$ is perpendicular to the sheet. These two effects stipulate the spectacular picture of the $\mathbf{B}$ dependent confinement and $α_s$, discovered on the lattice.
New types of confinement phase emerge as singular SCFT's appearing as infrared-fixed-points of N=2 supersymmetric QCD (SQCD) are perturbed by an N=1 adjoint mass term. Based on a recent remarkable work on infrared-fixed-point SCFT of highest criticalities by Gaiotto, Seiberg and Tachikawa, we discuss physics of certain confining systems in SU(N), USp(2N) or SO(N) gauge theories. These show features different from a straightforward dual superconductivity picture of confinement a' la 't Hooft and Mandelstam, which might suggest a new venue in exploring the quark confinement mechanism in the real…
We describe a class of holographic models that may describe the physics of certain four-dimensional big-bang / big-crunch cosmologies. The construction involves a pair of 3D Euclidean holographic CFTs each on a homogeneous and isotropic space $M$ coupled at either end of an interval ${\cal I}$ to a Euclidean 4D CFT on $M \times {\cal I}$ with many fewer local degrees of freedom. We argue that in some cases, when the size of $M$ is much greater than the length of ${\cal I}$, the theory flows to a gapped / confining three-dimensional field theory on $M$ in the infrared, and this is reflected in …
We review physical scenarios in different vacua of N=2 supersymmetric QCD deformed by the mass term μfor the adjoint matter. This deformation breaks supersymmetry down to N=1 and, at large μ, the theory flows to N=1 SQCD. We focus on dynamical scenarios which can serve as prototypes of what we observe in real-world QCD. The so-called r=N vacuum is especially promising in this perspective. In this vacuum an "instead-of-confinement" phase was identified previously, which is qualitatively close to the conventional QCD confinement: the quarks and gauge bosons screened at weak coupling, at strong c…
We review the physics of confinement based on non-Abelian dual superconductor picture, relying on exact solutions in N=2 supersymmetric QCD and based on the recent developments in our understanding of non-Abelian vortices and monopoles. The non-Abelian monopoles, though they are basically just the 't Hooft-Polyakov SU(2) monopoles embedded in various corners of the larger gauge group, require flavor symmetry in an essential way for their very existence. The phenomenon of flavor-color-flavor separation characterizes the multiple roles flavor symmetry plays in producing quantum-mechanical non-Ab…
I will review essential features of the Hamiltonian approach to QCD in Coulomb gauge showing that Gribov's confinement scenario is realized in this gauge. For this purpose I will discuss in detail the emergence of the horizon condition and the Coulomb string tension. I will show that both are induced by center vortex gauge field configurations, which establish the connection between Gribov's confinement scenario and the center vortex picture of confinement. I will then extend the Hamiltonian approach to QCD in Coulomb gauge to finite temperatures, first by the usual grand canonical ensemble an…
The low energy effective theory of the N=1 supersymmetric SU(5) gauge theory with chiral superfields in the 5* and 10 representations is constructed. Instead of postulating the confinement of SU(5) (confining picture), only the confinement of its subgroup SU(4) is postulated (Higgs picture), and the effective fields are SU(4)-singlet but SU(5)-variant. The classical scalar potential which ensures unique supersymmetric vacuum at the classical level is incorporated into the Kaehler potential of the effective fields. We show that supersymmetry and all other global symmetry are spontaneously broke…
We consider a five-dimensional model in which fermions are confined in a hypersurface due to an interaction with a purely geometric field. Inspired by the Rubakov-Shaposhnikov field-theoretical model, in which massless fermions can be localized in a domain wall through the interaction of a scalar field, we show that particle confinement may also take place if we endow the five-dimensional bulk with a Weyl integrable geometric structure, or if we assume the existence of a torsion field acting in the bulk. In this picture, the kind of interaction considered in the Rubakov-Shaposhnikov model is r…
In the context of the dual superconductor picture for the confinement mechanism, we study maximally Abelian (MA) projection of quark confinement in SU(3) quenched lattice QCD with $32^4$ at $β$=6.4 (i.e., $a \simeq$ 0.058 fm). We investigate the static quark-antiquark potential $V(r)$, its Abelian part $V_{\rm Abel}(r)$ and its off-diagonal part $V_{\rm off}(r)$, respectively, from the on-axis lattice data. As a remarkable fact, we find almost perfect Abelian dominance for quark confinement, i.e., $σ_{\rm Abel} \simeq σ$ for the string tension, on the fine and large-volume lattice. We find als…
Confinement in QCD is caused by vacuum fluctuations of gluon fields. There are two numerically different scales, characterizing nonperturbative QCD vacuum dynamics: a "small" scale, corresponding to gluon condensate, critical temperature etc, which is about 0.2-0.3 GeV, and a "large" one, given by inverse confining string width, glueball and gluelump masses etc, which is about 1.5-2.5 GeV. We discuss this mismatch in a picture where confinement is ensured by two-point gauge-invariant field strength correlator of special type. It supports most of perturbative and nonperturbative dynamics, while…
We try to identify the light hadron world as the magnetic picture of QCD. We take both phenomenological and theoretical approaches to this hypothesis, and find that the interpretation seems to show interesting consistencies. In particular, one can identify the rho and omega mesons as the magnetic gauge bosons, and the Higgs mechanism for them provides a dual picture of the color confinement.
We study the Abelian projection of quark confinement in SU(3) quenched lattice QCD, in terms of the dual superconductor picture. In the maximal Abelian gauge, we perform the Cartan decomposition of the non-Abelian gauge field on a $32^4$ lattice with spacing $a \simeq0.058, 0.10$ fm (i.e., $β=6.4, 6.0$), and investigate the interquark potential $V(r)$, the Abelian part $V_{\mathrm{Abel}}(r)$, and the off-diagonal part $V_{\mathrm{off}}(r)$. For the potential analysis, we use both on-axis data and several types of off-axis data, with larger numbers of gauge configurations. Remarkably, we find a…
We study aspects of confinement in the M theory fivebrane version of QCD (MQCD). We show heavy quarks are confined in hadrons (which take the form of membrane-fivebrane bound states) for N=1 and softly broken N=2 SU(Nc) MQCD. We explore and clarify the transition from the exotic physics of the latter to the standard physics of the former. In particular, the many strings and quark-antiquark mesons found in N=2 field theory by Douglas and Shenker are reproduced. It is seen that in the N=1 limit all but one such meson disappears while all of the strings survive. The strings of softly broken N=2, …
In the holographic model of QCD, theta dependence sharply changes at the point of confinement deconfinement phase transition. In large N QCD such a change in theta behavior can be related to the breakdown of the instanton expansion at some critical temperature T_c. Associating this temperature with confinement-deconfinement phase transition leads to the description of the latter in terms of dissociation of instantons into the fractionally charged instanton quarks. To elucidate this picture, we introduce the nonvanishing chiral condensate in the deconfining phase and assume a specific lagrangia…
We show the existence of strong (anti)correlations between the topological hot spots and the local values of the trace of the Polyakov loop in $2+1$ flavor QCD with physical quark mass, in the vicinity of the crossover transition corresponding to the simultaneous restoration of chiral symmetry and deconfinement. Using sophisticated lattice techniques, we have carefully identified the topological hot spots using quark zero modes and measured the short-distance fluctuations of the Polyakov loop about them, showing how the latter is repelled quite strongly around the peak of the zero modes. Thoug…
Light-front coordinates offer a scenario in which a constituent approximation of hadron structure can emerge from QCD. This requires cutoffs that violate Lorentz covariance and gauge invariance, and a new renormalization group formalism based on a similarity transformation is used with coupling coherence to fix counterterms that restore these symmetries. The counterterms contain functions of longitudinal momentum fractions which severely complicate renormalization, but they also offer possible resolutions of apparent contradictions between the constituent picture and QCD. The similarity transf…
As discussed in arXiv:1501.03298, Physics suggests that, close to cosmological singularities, the effective Planck length diverges, hence a "quantum point" becomes infinitely extended. We argue that, as a consequence, at the origin of times spacetime might reduce effectively to a single point and interactions disappear. This last point is supported by converging evidences in two different approaches to interacting quantum fiedls on Quantum Spacetime: the field operators evaluated at a "quantum point" converge to zero, and so do the lowest order expressions for interacting fields in the Yang Fe…
