Some years ago Gribov developed the so-called supercritical light quark confinement scenario. Based on physical arguments he conjectured a drastic change in the analytical properties of the quark propagator when the back-reaction of Goldstone bosons (pions) is considered. We investigate this scenario and provide numerical solutions for the quark propagator in the complex plane with and without the pion back-reaction. We find no evidence for the scenario Gribov advocated. As an aside we present a novel method to solve the quark Dyson-Schwinger equation in the complex plane and discuss new characteristics of dynamical chiral symmetry breaking in our truncation scheme.
I discuss the chiral dynamics of Gribov's theory of confinement. At a critical coupling $α_s^c$ the light quark vacuum undergoes a series of phase transitions which should be taken into account in the application of chiral perturbation theory. The Gribov theory offers a simple explanation of the value of the pion nucleon sigma term without need to invoke a large strange quark component in the nucleon.
Gribov's scenario of confinement caused by supercritical charges is described and the present status of Gribov's equation for the Green function of light quarks is discussed.
I give a brief description of Gribov's light quark confinement scenario and of the Gribov--Dyson--Schwinger equation for light quarks. It is shown that the Green function obtained from this equation exhibits chiral symmetry breaking.
In this paper we derive the high energy evolution equation in the Gribov-Zwanziger approach, for the confinement of quarks and gluons. We demonstrate that the new equation generates an exponential decrease of the scattering amplitude at large impact parameter, and resolves the main difficulties of CGC (Colour Glass Condensate) high energy effective theory. Such behaviour occurs if the gluon propagator in Gribov-Zwanziger approach, does not vanish at small momenta. Solving the non-linear equation for deep inelastic scattering, we show that the suggested equation leads to a Froissart disc with r…
I give a brief account of Gribov's scenario of supercritical charges in QCD. Gribov's equation for the Green function of light quarks and its derivation from the corresponding Dyson-Schwinger equation are described. The resulting Green function is shown to exhibit chiral symmetry breaking.
In this paper we solved the new evolution equation for high energy scattering amplitudethat stems from the Gribov-Zwanziger approach to the confinement of quarks and gluons. We found that (1) the energy dependence of the scattering amplitude turns out to be the same as for QCD BFKL evolution; (2) the spectrum of the new equation does not depend on the details of the Gribov-Zwanzinger approach and (3) all eigenfunctions coincide with the eigenfunctions of the QCD BFKL equation at large transverse momenta $κ\,\geq\,1$. The numerical calculations show that there exist no new eigenvalues with the …
QCD possesses a compact gauge group, and this implies a non-trivial topological structure of the vacuum. In this contribution to the Gribov-85 Memorial volume, we first discuss the origin of Gribov copies and their interpretation in terms of fluctuating topology in the QCD vacuum. We then describe the recent work with E. Levin that links the confinement of gluons and color screening to the fluctuating topology, and discuss implications for spin physics, high energy scattering, and the physics of quark-gluon plasma.
We rewrite the Zwanziger horizon condition in terms of the Kugo-Ojima parameter for color confinement. This enables one to explain which value of the Kugo-Ojima parameter is allowed if the horizon condition is imposed. Although all the calculations are performed in the limit of vanishing Gribov parameter for simplicity, the obtained value is consistent with the result of numerical simulations. Consequently, the ghost propagator behaves like free and the gluon propagator is non-vanishing at low momenta, in harmony with recent lattice results and decoupling solution of the Schwinger-Dyson equati…
A major contribution to the quest of constructing quantum dynamics of non-Abelian fieds is due to V.N. Gribov. Perturbative approach to the colour confinement, both in gluodynamics and the real world, was long considered heretic but is gaining ground. We discuss Gribov's approach to the confinement problem, centered around the role played by light quarks - the supercritical light quark confinement scenario. We also review some recent developments that are motivated, directly or indirectly, by his ideas.
We consider a 1+3 dimensional spin system. The spin-wave (magnon) field is described by the O(3) non-linear sigma model with a symmetry-breaking potential. This interacts with a slow spin SU(2) doublet Schrodinger fermion. The interaction is described by a generalized nonperturbative Yukawa coupling, and the self-consistency condition is solved with the aid of a non-relativistic Gribov equation. When the Yukawa coupling is sufficiently strong, the solution exhibits supercriticality and soft confinement, in a way that is quite analogous to Gribov's light-quark confinement theory. The solution c…
We derive a gauge-invariant low-energy effective model of the Yang-Mills theory. We find that the effective gluon propagator belongs to the Gribov-Stingl type and agrees with it when a mass term which breaks nilpotency of the BRST symmetry is included. We show that the effective model with gluon propagator of the Gribov-Stingl type exhibits both quark and gluon confinement: the Wilson loop average has the area law and the Schwinger function violates reflection positivity. However, we argue that both quark and gluon confinement can be obtained even in the absence of such a mass term.
The Yang-Mills Schrödinger equation is variationally solved in Coulomb gauge for the vacuum sector using a trial wave functional, which is strongly peaked at the Gribov horizon. We find the absence of gluons in the infrared and also a confining quark potential.
The Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion and its relation to the infrared behaviour of the gluon and ghost propagators in Landau gauge QCD are reviewed. The realization of this confinement criterion (which in Landau gauge relates to Zwanziger's horizon condition) results from quite general properties of the ghost Dyson-Schwinger equation. The numerical solutions for the gluon and ghost propagators obtained from a truncated set of Dyson-Schwinger equations provide an explicit example for the anticipated infrared behaviour. These results are in good agreement, also quantitatively, with corresponding…
Gribov's theory of confinement offers a simple explanaton of the value of the pion nucleon sigma term. There is no need to invoke a large strange quark component in the nucleon.
In this paper we construct a wide class of Gribov copies in Coulomb gauge SU(2) gauge theory. Infinitesimal copies are studied in some detail and their non-perturbative nature is made manifest. As an application it is shown that the copies prevent a non-perturbative definition of colour charge.
An introduction is given into current lattice investigations of the non-perturbative gluon and ghost propagators, in the light of the Gribov-Zwanziger and Kugo-Ojima scenarios of confinement, in the context of results obtained from the non-perturbative Dyson-Schwinger approach in the continuum and in connection with the vortex mechanism of confinement.
We relate quark confinement, as measured by the Polyakov-loop order parameter, to color confinement, as described by the Kugo-Ojima/Gribov-Zwanziger scenario. We identify a simple criterion for quark confinement based on the IR behaviour of ghost and gluon propagators, and compute the order-parameter potential from the knowledge of Landau-gauge correlation functions with the aid of the functional RG. Our approach predicts the deconfinement transition in quenched QCD to be of first order for SU(3) and second order for SU(2) -- in agreement with general expectations. As an estimate for the criti…
This is the third lecture on quark confinement given by V.N.Gribov in 1992 in Orsay. An extensive discussion of the consequences of all this for the structure of the Green function can be found in [5,6] - in the two last papers concluding his 20 years long study of the problem of quark confinement in QCD. The text was prepared for publication by Yu. Dokshitzer, B. Metsch and J. Nyiri on the basis of a tape recording and notes taken during the lecture.
We consider the effects of the Faddeev-Popov determinant in the Coulomb gauge on the confinement properties of the QCD vacuum. We show that the the determinant is needed to regularize the otherwise divergent functional integrals near the Gribov horizon but still enables large field configurations to generate IR enhanced running coupling. The physical gluon propagator is found to be strongly suppressed in the IR consistent with expectations from lattice gauge calculations.
We derive a gauge-invariant low-energy effective model of the SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. We find that the effective gluon propagator belongs to the Gribov-Stingl type, irrespective of the gauge choice. In the maximally Abelian gauge, especially, we demonstrate that the model exhibits both quark confinement and gluon confinement: the Wilson loop average has area law and the Schwinger function violates reflection positivity. Moreover, we give a formula for the string tension calculable from the gluon propagator of the gauge-invariant field strength and gives a good estimate for the string tension.…
We prove that the Faddeev-Popov ghost dressing function in the Yang-Mills theory is non-zero and finite in the limit of vanishing momenta and hence the ghost propagator behaves like free in the deep infrared regime, within the Gribov-Zwanziger framework of the $D$-dimensional SU(N) Yang-Mills theory in the Landau gauge for any $D>2$. This result implies that the Kugo-Ojima color confinement criterion is not satisfied in its original form. We point out that the result crucially depends on the explicit form of the non-local horizon term adopted. The original Gribov prediction in the Landau gauge…
Quark confinement and the genesis of the constituent quark model are examined in nonperturbative QCD in Coulomb gauge. We employ a self-consistent method to construct a quasiparticle basis and to determine the quasiparticle interaction. The results agree remarkably well with lattice computations. They also illustrate the mechanism by which confinement and constituent quarks emerge, provide support for the Gribov-Zwanziger confinement scenario, clarify several perplexing issues in the constituent quark model, and permit the construction of an improved model of low energy QCD.
We study the lattice gauge boson propagator of 3D compact QED in Landau gauge at zero and non-zero temperature. Non-perturbative effects are reflected by the generation of a mass $m$, by an anomalous dimension $α$ and by the photon wave function renormalisation $Z$. These effects can be attributed to monopoles: they are absent in the propagator of the regular part of the gauge field. The rôle of Gribov copies is carefully investigated.
This is the second of the two last papers by V. N. Gribov concluding his 20 year long study of the problem of quark confinement in QCD. In this paper the analytic structure of quark and gluon Green's functions is investigated in the framework of the theory of confinement based on the phenomenon of supercritical binding of light quarks. The problem of unitarity in a confining theory is discussed. The write-up remained unfinished and so it is presented here. The author was planning to considerably extend the paper. The text was prepared for publication by Yu. Dokshitzer, C. Ewerz, and J. Nyiri.
In this lecture I will explain the established pictures of the QCD vacuum and, in particular, the underlying confinement mechanism. These are: the magnetic monopole condensation (dual Meißner effect), the center vortex picture and the Gribov--Zwanziger picture. I will start by giving a survey of the common order and disorder parameters of confinement: the temporal and spatial Wilson loop, the Polyakov loop and the 't Hooft loop. Next the dual Meißner effect, which assumes a condensate of magnetic monopoles, will be explained as a picture of confinement. I will also show how magnetic monopoles …
QCD perturbation theory ignores the compact nature of $SU(3)$ gauge group that gives rise to the periodic $θ$-vacuum of the theory. We propose to modify the gluon propagator to reconcile perturbation theory with the anomalous Ward identities for the topological current in the $θ$-vacuum. As a result, the gluon couples to the Veneziano ghost describing the tunneling transitions between different Chern-Simons sectors of the vacuum; we call the emerging gluon dressed by ghost loops a "glost". We evaluate the glost propagator and find that it has the form $G(p) = (p^2 + χ_{top}/p^2)^{-1}$ where $χ…
In the Gribov-Zwanziger scenario the confinement of gluons is attributed to an enhancement of the spectrum of the Faddeev-Popov operator near eigenvalue zero. This has been observed in functional and also in lattice calculations. The linear rise of the quark-anti-quark potential and thus quark confinement on the other hand seems to be connected to topological excitations. To investigate whether a connection exists between both aspects of confinement, the spectrum of the Faddeev-Popov operator in two topological background fields is determined analytically in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory. It is foun…
The infrared behaviour of the gluon and ghost propagators in Landau gauge QCD is reviewed. The Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion and the Gribov-Zwanziger horizon condition result from quite general properties of the ghost Dyson-Schwinger equation. The numerical solutions for the gluon and ghost propagators obtained from a truncated set of Dyson-Schwinger equations provide an explicit example for the anticipated infrared behaviour. The results are in good agreement with corresponding lattice data obtained recently. The resulting running coupling approaches a fix point in the infrared, $α(0) = 8.…
The gluon propagator is investigated in Landau and in maximal center gauge for the gauge group SU(2) by means of lattice gauge simulations. We find that Gribov ambiguities arising from the implementation of Landau gauge have a small influence on the propagator. In agreement with previous findings, we obtain that the small momentum behavior is dominated by a mass, which is of order $(1.48 \pm 0.05) \sqrtσ$, where $σ$ is the string tension. By removing the confining vortices from the full Yang-Mills ensemble, we convert full YM-theory into a theory which does not confine quarks. We find that in …
Inspired by the construction of the Gribov-Zwanziger action in the Landau gauge, we introduce a quark model exhibiting both confinement and chiral symmetry aspects. An important feature is the incorporation of spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in a renormalizable fashion. The quark propagator in the condensed vacuum turns out to be of a confining type. Besides a real pole, it exhibits complex conjugate poles. The resulting spectral form is explicitly shown to violate positivity, indicative of its unphysical character. Moreover, the ensuing quark mass function fits well to existing lattice d…
The properties of elementary particles are encoded in their respective propagators and interaction vertices. For a SU(2) gauge theory coupled to a doublet of fundamental complex scalars these propagators are determined in both the Higgs phase and the confinement phase and compared to the Yang-Mills case, using lattice gauge theory. Since the propagators are gauge-dependent, this is done in the Landau limit of 't Hooft gauge, permitting to also determine the ghost propagator. It is found that neither the gauge boson nor the scalar differ qualitatively in the different cases. In particular, the …
We calculate the lattice quark propagator in Coulomb gauge both from dynamical and quenched configurations. We show that in the continuum limit both the static and full quark propagator are multiplicatively renormalizable. From the propagator we extract the quark renormalization function Z(|p|) and the running mass M(|p|) and extrapolate the latter to the chiral limit. We find that M(|p|) practically coincides with the corresponding Landau gauge function for small momenta. The computation of M(|p|) can be however made more efficient in Coulomb gauge; this can lead to a better determination of …
On the lattice we study the gauge boson propagator of three dimensional compact QED in Landau gauge at zero and non-zero temperature. The non-perturbative effects are taken into account by the generation of a mass, by an anomalous dimension and by the photon wave function renormalization. All these effects can be attributed to the monopoles: they are absent in the propagator of the singularity-free part of the gauge field. We assess carefully the Gribov copy problem for the propagator and the parameters emerging from the fits.
The infrared behavior of the gluon propagator is directly related to confinement in QCD. Indeed, the Gribov-Zwanziger scenario of confinement predicts an infrared vanishing (transverse) gluon propagator in Landau-like gauges, implying violation of reflection positivity and gluon confinement. Finite-volume effects make it very difficult to observe (in the minimal Landau gauge) an infrared suppressed gluon propagator in lattice simulations of the four-dimensional case. Here we report results for the SU(2) gluon propagator in a gauge that interpolates between the minimal Landau gauge (for gauge p…
Analyticity of gluon and Faddeev--Popov ghost propagators and their form factors on the complex momentum-squared plane is exploited to continue analytically the ultraviolet asymptotic form calculable by perturbation theory into the infrared non-perturbative solution. We require the non-perturbative multiplicative renormalizability to write down the renormalization group equation. These requirements enable one to settle the value of the exponent characterizing the infrared asymptotic solution with power behavior which was originally predicted by Gribov and has recently been found as approximate…
The finite-temperature behavior of gluon and of Faddeev-Popov-ghost propagators is investigated for pure SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in Landau gauge. We present nonperturbative results, obtained using lattice simulations and Dyson-Schwinger equations. Possible limitations of these two approaches, such as finite-volume effects and truncation artifacts, are extensively discussed. Both methods suggest a very different temperature dependence for the magnetic sector when compared to the electric one. In particular, a clear thermodynamic transition seems to affect only the electric sector. These results…
Non-perturbative properties of QCD, such as color confinement, are encoded in the infrared behavior of correlation functions, e.g. propagators and vertices. Various analytic predictions have been suggested for these quantities in various gauges. Here we numerically test these predictions using lattice gauge theory. In particular, we present results for the 2- and 3-point functions for SU(2) Landau-gauge Yang-Mills theory in three and in four dimensions. Special attention is paid to systematic finite-volume effects. The gluon and ghost propagators are also evaluated in the so-called interpolati…
In a functional approach to QCD the infrared behaviour of Landau gauge Green functions is investigated. It can be proven that the ghost Dyson-Schwinger equation implies the Gribov-Zwanziger horizon condition. Its relation to the Kugo-Ojima confinement scenario is elucidated. Positivity violation for gluons is demonstrated, and the analytic structure of the gluon propagator is studied. Quark confinement is related to an infrared divergence of the quark-gluon vertex. It is shown that in the latter various components are non-vanishing due to the dynamical breaking of chiral symmetry. As a result …
