The current status of the Adler function and two closely related Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) sum rules, namely, the Bjorken sum rule for polarized DIS and the Gross-Llewellyn Smith sum rule are briefly reviewed. A new result is presented: an analytical calculation of the coefficient function of the latter sum rule in a generic gauge theory in order O(alpha_s^4). It is demonstrated that the corresponding Crewther relation allows to fix two of three colour structures in the O(alpha_s^4) contribution to the singlet part of the Adler function.
We compute the nonsinglet Adler $D$-function and the coefficient function for Bjorken polarized sum rules $S^{Bjp}$ at order $O(α_s^4)$ in an extended QCD model with arbitrary number of fermion representations. The Crewther-Broadhurst-Kataev (CBK) relation in this order is confirmed.
We derive explicit expressions for the elements of the $\{ β\}$-expansion for the nonsinglet Adler $D_A$-function and Bjorken polarized sum rules $S^{Bjp}$ in the N$^4$LO using recent results by Chetyrkin for these quantities computed within extended QCD including any number of fermion representations. We discuss the properties of the $\{ β\}$-expansion for $D_A$ and $S^{Bjp}$ at higher orders which follow from the Crewther [1] and the Broadhurst-Kataev [2] relation.
We compute, for the first time, the order alpha_s^4 contributions to the Bjorken sum rule for polarized electron-nucleon scattering and to the (non-singlet) Adler function for the case of a generic colour gauge group. We confirm at the same order a (generalized) Crewther relation which provides a strong test of the correctness of our previously obtained results: the QCD Adler function and the five-loop beta-function in quenched QED. In particular, the appearance of an irrational contribution proportional to zeta_3 in the latter quantity is confirmed. We obtain the commensurate scale equation r…
The analytic result for the singlet part of the Adler function of the vector current in a general gauge theory is presented in five-loop approximation. Comparing this result with the corresponding singlet part of the Gross-Llewellyn Smith sum rule [1], we successfully demonstrate the validity of the generalized Crewther relation for the singlet part. This provides a non-trivial test of both our calculations and the generalized Crewther relation. Combining the result with the already available non-singlet part of the Adler function [2,3] we arrive at the complete ${\cal O}(α_s^4)$ expression fo…
The generalized Crewther relations in the channels of the non-singlet and vector quark currents are considered. They follow from the double application of the operator product expansion approach to the same axial vector-vector-vector triangle amplitude in two regions, adjoining to the angle sides $(x,y)$ (or $p^2,q^2$). We assume that the generalized Crewther relations in these two kinematic regimes result in the existence of the same perturbation expression for two products of the coefficient functions of annihilation and deep-inelastic scattering processes in the non-singlet and vector chann…
We propose a conjecture about the detailed structure of the conformal symmetry breaking term in the generalized Crewther relation. We conclude that this conjecture leads to new relations between the QCD expansion coefficients of the Adler D-function and the polarized Bjorken sum rule B$_{jp}$
We consider the two-fold expansion in powers of the conformal anomaly and of the strong coupling $α_s$ for the non-singlet contributions to Adler $D$-function and Bjorken polarized sum rule calculated previously in the $\MSbar$-scheme at the four-loop level. This representation provides relations between definite terms of different loop orders appearing within the $\{β\}$-expansion of these quantities. Supposing the validity of this two-fold representation at the five-loop order and using these relations, we obtain some $\mathcal{O}(α_s^5)$ corrections to the $D$-function, to the $R$-ratio of …
We discuss the current status of the investigations of the conformal symmetry breaking contributions to three forms for the QCD generalizations of the Crewther relation. The new third form of the extension of this relation is considered in more detail. Particular attention is paid to the discussions of the applications of the $β$-expansion formalism proposed previously by one of us (SVM). Several relations between 5-loop contributions to the Adler D-function $D^{NS}_{A}$ and to the polarized Bjorken sum rule $S_\text{Bjp}$ are presented. One of them gives the additional confirmation of the cor…
In the paper, we make a detailed study on the generalized Crewther Relation (GCR) between the Adler function ($D$) and the Gross-Llewellyn Smith sum rules coefficient ($C^{\rm GLS}$) by using the newly suggested single-scale approach of the principle of maximum conformality (PMC). The resultant GCR is scheme-independent, whose residual scale dependence due to unknown higher-order terms are highly suppressed. Thus a precise test of QCD theory without renormalization scheme and scale ambiguities can be achieved by comparing with the data. Moreover, a demonstration of the scheme independence of c…
Using the analytical $\rm{\overline{MS}}$-scheme three-loop contribution to the perturbative Coulomb-like part of the static color potential of heavy quark-antiquark system, we obtain the analytical expression for the fourth-order $β$-function in the gauge-invariant effective V-scheme in the case of the generic simple gauge group. Also we present the Adler function of electron-positron annihilation into hadrons and the coefficient function of the Bjorken polarized sum rule in the V-scheme up to $α^4_s$ terms. We demonstrate that at this level of PT in this effective scheme the $β$-function is …
The Principle of Maximal Conformality (PMC) provides a systematic way to set the renormalization scales order-by-order for any perturbative QCD process. The resulting predictions are independent of the choice of renormalization scheme, a requirement of renormalization group invariance. The Crewther relation, which was originally derived for conformal theory, provides a remarkable connection between two observables when the $β$ function vanishes. The "Generalized Crewther Relation" relates these two observables for physical QCD with nonzero $β$ function; specifically, it connects the non-single…
We apply the 't Hooft $\bar{MS}$-based scheme to study the scheme-dependence of the QCD generalization of Crewther relation for the product of the normalised non-singlet perturbative contributions to the $e^+e^-$-annihilation Adler function and to the Bjorken sum rule of the polarized lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering process. We prove that after the transformations from the pure $\bar{MS}$-scheme to the 't Hooft scheme the characteristic $\bar{MS}$-scheme theoretical property of this relation, namely the factorization of the $β$-function in its conformal symmetry breaking part, disappe…
Considering the results of recent distinguished analytical calculations of the 5-loop single-fermion loop corrections to the QED $β$-function we emphasize that to our point of view it is important to perform their independent cross-checks. We propose one of the ways of these cross-check. It is based on the application of the original Crewther relation. We derive the new analytical expressions for the $C_F^4α_s^4$-contributions to the Bjorken polarized sum rule. If results of possible direct calculations will agree with the presented expression, then the appearance of $ζ_3$-term in the 5-loop c…
Two renormalization group invariant quantities in quantum chromodinamics (QCD), defined in Euclidean space, namely, Adler D-function of electron-positron annihilation to hadrons and Bjorken polarized deep-inelastic scattering sum rule, are considered. It is shown, that the 5-th order corrections to them in $\overline{MS}$-like renormalization prescriptions, proportional to Riemann $ζ$-function $ζ\left(4\right)$, can be restored by the transition to the C-scheme, with the $β$-function, analogous to Novikov, Shifman, Vainshtein and Zakharov exact $β$-function in $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric gau…
An experimental motivated QCD analysis of the behaviour of the Adler D-function in the Euclidian region is described. It is stressed that by taking account of $b$-quark mass-dependent $α_s^2$-effects one obtains better agreement between theoretical predictions and experimentally motivated behaviour of the D-function at large Euclidian momentum transfer. A more detailed analysis of QCD predictions, including information on quark and gluon condensates, requires more precise data on $e^+e^-\to{hadrons}$, particularly in the region $E<M_{J/Ψ}$ and $M_{J/Ψ}<E<3.6 GeV$. use of experimental determina…
The scheme and gauge dependence of the factorization property of the RG $β$-function in the $SU(N_c)$ QCD generalized Crewther relation (GCR), which connects the non-singlet contributions to the Adler and Bjorken polarized sum rule functions, is investigated at the $\mathcal{O}(a^4_s)$ level. In the gauge-invariant $\rm{\overline{MS}}$-scheme this property holds at least at this order. To study whether this property is true in all gauge-invariant schemes, we consider the $\rm{MS}$-like schemes in QCD and the QED-limit of the GCR in the $\rm{\overline{MS}}$-scheme and in the $\rm{MOM}$ and the …
We propose a hypothesis on the detailed structure for the representation of the conformal symmetry breaking term in the basic Crewther relation generalized in the perturbation theory framework in QCD renormalized in the ${\rm \bar{MS}}$ scheme. We establish the validity of this representation in the $O(α_s^4)$ approximation. Using the variant of the generalized Crewther relation formulated here allows finding relations between specific contributions to the QCD perturbation series coefficients for the flavor nonsinglet part of the Adler function $D^{ns}_A$ for the electron-positron annihilation…
We have discovered 7 intimate connections between the published results for the radiative corrections, $\Ck$, to the Gross--Llewellyn Smith (GLS) sum rule, in deep-inelastic lepton scattering, and the radiative corrections, $\Cr$, to the Adler function of the flavour-singlet vector current, in $\ee$ annihilation. These include a surprising relation between the scheme-independent single-electron-loop contributions to the 4-loop QED $β$\/-function and the zero-fermion-loop abelian terms in the 3-loop GLS sum rule. The combined effect of all 7 relations is to give the factorization of the 2-loop …
The Crewther-Broadhurst-Kataev (CBK) relation connects the Bjorken function for deep-inelastic sum rules (or the Gross - Llewellyn Smith function) with the Adler function for electron-positron annihilation in QCD; it has been checked to hold up to four loops in perturbation theory. Here we study non-perturbative terms in the CBK relation using a holographic dual theory that is believed to capture properties of QCD. We show that for the large invariant momenta the perturbative CBK relation is exactly satisfied. For the small momenta non-perturbative corrections enter the relation and we calcula…
As was discovered recently, 5-loop perturbative quenched QED approximation to the QED $β$-function consist from the rational term and the term proportional to $ζ(3)$-function. It is stressed, that this feature is also manifesting itself in the conformal invariant pqQED series for the 4-loop approximation to the anomalous mass dimension. The 4-loop pqQED expression for the singlet contribution into the Ellis-Jaffe polarized sum rule is obtained. It coincides with the similar approximation for the non-singlet coefficient function of Ellis-Jaffe sum rule and of Bjorken polarized sum rule. It is s…
We formulate a way to separate UV and IR contributions to the Adler function and discuss how $Λ_\mathrm{QCD}^2/Q^2$ dependence is encoded in the UV contribution within perturbative QCD.
Being reformulated in the color dipole basis of small-x QCD Adler's theorem establishes a connection between perturbative and non-perturbative descriptions of DIS and quantifies the effect of non-perturbative dynamics on would-be-perturbative observables. In particular, it provides a quantitative measure of the non-perturbative influence on the longitudinal structure function in charged current DIS and imposes stringent constraints on non-perturbative parameters of color dipole models. Our analysis calls for new experimental tests of Adler's theorem in diffractive neutrino scattering.
The behavior of the vector Adler function at spacelike momenta is studied in the framework of a covariant chiral quark model with instanton-like quark-quark interaction. This function describes the transition between the high energy asymptotically free region of almost massless current quarks to the low energy hadronized regime with massive constituent quarks. The model reproduces the Adler function and V-A correlator extracted from the ALEPH and OPAL data on hadronic τlepton decays, transformed into the Euclidean domain via dispersion relations. The leading order contribution from hadronic pa…
Strong mesonic decays are studied in the framework of the 't Hooft model for the two-dimensional QCD in the axial gauge. Special attention is payed to the processes with pions in the final state involved and the low energy theorems have been checked including the "Adler zero". It is demonstrated explicitly that in the chiral limit any three-meson decay amplitude with at least one pion vertex vanishes identically for any values of the external momenta. Ward identities for the dressed vector and axial-vector currents vertices are identified and their relationship to the pionic vertex are discuss…
Based on the compilation of the available e^+e^- data, we present a non-perturbative estimation of the Adler function derived from the electromagnetic current correlator, and compare it with theoretical predictions from perturbative QCD (pQCD). The comparison is presented for the Euclidean region where pQCD is supposed to work best. We emphasize that such a comparison only makes sense if one takes into account the exact mass dependence of the perturbative predictions, which are available for the leading and next to leading (two-loop) order. In order to have the correct physical mass dependence…
The Adler sum rule for deep inelastic neutrino scattering measures the isospin of the nucleon and is hence exact. By contrast, the corresponding Gottfried sum rule for charged lepton scattering was based merely on a valence picture and is modified both by perturbative and non-perturbative effects. Noting that the known perturbative corrections to two-loop order are suppressed by a factor 1/N_c^2, relative to those for higher moments, we propose that this suppression persists at higher orders and also applies to higher-twist effects. Moreover, we propose that the differences between the corresp…
We present an up-to-date analysis for a precise determination of the effective fine structure constant and discuss the prospects for future improvements. We advocate to use a determination monitored by the Adler function which allows us to exploit perturbative QCD in an optimal well controlled way. Together with a long term program of hadronic cross section measurements at energies up to a few GeV, a determination of alpha(M_Z) at a precision comparable to the one of the Z mass M_Z should be feasible. Presently alpha(E) at E>1 GeV is the least precisely known of the fundamental parameters of t…
New integral representations for the Adler D-function and the R-ratio of the electron-positron annihilation into hadrons are derived in the general framework of the analytic approach to QCD. These representations capture the nonperturbative information encoded in the dispersion relation for the D-function, the effects due to the interrelation between spacelike and timelike domains, and the effects due to the nonvanishing pion mass. The latter plays a crucial role in this analysis, forcing the Adler function to vanish in the infrared limit. Within the developed approach the D-function is calcul…
We address several aspects of lattice QCD calculations of the hadronic vacuum polarization and the associated Adler function. We implement a representation derived previously which allows one to access these phenomenologically important functions for a continuous set of virtualities, irrespective of the flavor structure of the current. Secondly we present a theoretical analysis of the finite-size effects on our particular representation of the Adler function, based on the operator product expansion at large momenta and on the spectral representation of the Euclidean correlator at small momenta…
The tau hadronic width provides a determination of the strong coupling constant alpha_s at low energies, since it can be related to a weighted integral of the Adler function in the complex energy plane. Using Operator Product Expansion, one sees that the sensitivity to alpha_s comes from the perturbative contribution, which can be obtained by integrating the perturbative expansion of the Adler function. Two different prescriptions proposed to perform this integral, called Fixed-Order Perturbation Theory and Contour-Improved Perturbation Theory (FOPT and CIPT), yield different results for the s…
We calculate the Adler $D$-function for ${\cal N}=1$ SQCD in the three-loop approximation using the higher covariant derivative regularization and the NSVZ-like subtraction scheme. The recently formulated all-order relation between the Adler function and the anomalous dimension of the matter superfields defined in terms of the bare coupling constant is first considered and generalized to the case of an arbitrary representation for the chiral matter superfields. The correctness of this all-order relation is explicitly verified at the three-loop level. The special renormalization scheme in which…
The behavior of the vector Adler function at spacelike momenta is studied in the framework of a covariant chiral quark model with instanton-like quark-quark interaction. The model reproduces the Adler function and $V-A$ correlator extracted from the ALEPH and OPAL data on hadronic $τ$ lepton decays, transformed into the Euclidean domain via dispersion relations. The leading order contribution from hadronic part of the photon vacuum polarization to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $a_μ^{\mathrm{hvp}(1)} $, is estimated.
The three-loop Adler $D$-function for ${\cal N}=1$ SQCD in the $\overline{\mbox{DR}}$ scheme is calculated. It appears that the result does not satisfy NSVZ-like equation which relates the $D$-function to the anomalous dimension of the matter superfields. However this NSVZ-like equation can be restored by a special tuning of the renormalization scheme. Also we demonstrate that the $D$-function defined in terms of the bare coupling does not satisfy the NSVZ-like equation in the case of using the regularization by dimensional reduction. The scheme-dependence of the $D$-function written in the fo…
We describe the Adler function in Quantum Chromodynamics using a transseries representation within a resurgent framework. The approach is based on a Borel-Ecalle resummation of the infrared renormalons combined with an effective running for the strong coupling. The new approach is flexible enough to give values in agreement with the current Adler function determinations. We then apply our finding to the muon's anomalous magnetic moment studying the possibility of saturating, solely in terms of the vacuum polarization function, the current discrepancy between the best Standard Model value for t…
The modelling of neutrino nucleus interactions is one of the limiting systematic errors in long base line neutrino oscillation experiments. The accurate modelling of the neutrino interactions requires more experimental observables to determine its accuracy. Adler Angles are observables carrying information about the polarization of the ?Δ resonance and the interference with the non-resonant single pion production. These observables were measured with limited statistics in bubble chamber experiments. We discuss the possibility of measuring the angles in neutrino interactions with nucleus.
The Adler-Weisberger sum rule for the nucleon axial-vector charge, $g_A$, offers a unique signature of chiral symmetry and its breaking in QCD. Its derivation relies on both algebraic aspects of chiral symmetry, which guarantee the convergence of the sum rule, and dynamical aspects of chiral symmetry breaking---as exploited using chiral perturbation theory---which allow the rigorous inclusion of explicit chiral symmetry breaking effects due to light-quark masses. The original derivations obtained the sum rule in the chiral limit and, without the benefit of chiral perturbation theory, made vari…
By using a non-perturbative expansion and the dispersion relation for the Adler $D$--function we propose a new method for constructing the QCD effective coupling constant in the timelike region.
The present calculations in perturbative QCD reach the order $α_s^4$ for several correlators calculated to five loops, and the huge computational difficulties make unlikely the full six-loop calculation in the near future. This situation has practical consequences, in particular the treatment of the higher orders of the perturbation series for the current-current correlator of light quarks is one of the main sources of errors in the extraction of the strong coupling from hadronic $τ$ decays. Several approximate estimates of the next coefficients of the corresponding Adler function have been pr…
In the determination of alpha_s from tau decays several different moments of the hadronic spectral functions have been used. In a recent work, we performed an analysis of their perturbative behaviour under two different assumptions for the higher-order coefficients of the Adler function. We showed that the various moments can be divided in a small number of classes. We concluded that some of the moments commonly employed in alpha_s extractions should be avoided due to their bad perturbative behaviour. Furthermore, for the moments that have a good perturbative behaviour, and under reasonable as…
We consider a new form of analytical perturbation theory expansion in the massless $SU(N_c)$ theory, for the non-singlet part of the $e^+e^-$-annihilation to hadrons Adler function $D^{ns}$ and of the Bjorken sum rule of the polarized lepton-hadron deep-inelastic scattering $C_{ns}^{Bjp}$, and demonstrate its validity at the $O(α_s^4)$-level at least. It is a two-fold series in terms of powers of the conformal anomaly and of $SU(N_c)$ coupling $α_s$. Explicit expressions are obtained for the $\{β\}$-expanded perturbation coefficients at $O(α_s^4)$ level in $\bar{\rm MS}$ scheme, for both consi…
The large-$N_c$ consistency conditions for axial vector and isovector magnetic couplings of pions to baryons are discussed from the point of view of low-energy current-algebra sum rules (Adler-Weisberger, Cabibbo-Radicati). In particular, we show how the result that ratios of axial vector and isovector magnetic coupling constants get corrections only at the order $1/N_c^2$ follows from the $N_c$-counting of appropriate cross sections. This counting is performed using various approaches at the quark and hadronic level. Other implications of our method are also presented.
We re-investigate Adler's PCAC relation in the presence of an external electromagnetic field within the framework of QCD coupled to external fields. We discuss pion electroproduction within a tree-level approximation to chiral perturbation theory and explicitly verify a chiral Ward identity referred to as the Adler-Gilman relation. We critically examine soft-momentum techniques and point out how inadmissable approximations may lead to results incompatible with chiral symmetry. As a result we confirm that threshold pion electroproduction is indeed a tool to obtain information on the axial form …
Conformal symmetry-based relations between concrete perturbative QED and QCD approximations for the Bjorken, the Ellis-Jaffe sum rules of polarized lepton- nucleon deep-inelastic scattering (DIS), the Gross-Llewellyn Smith sum rules of neutrino-nucleon DIS, and for the Adler functions of axial-vector and vector channels are derived. They result from the application of the operator product expansion to three triangle Green functions, constructed from the non-singlet axial-vector, and two vector currents, the singlet axial-vector and two non-singlet vector currents and the non-singlet axial-vect…
