The fundamental higher-order Landau plasma modes are known to be generally heavily damped. We show that these modes for the ion component in a weakly ionized plasma can be substantially modified by ion-neutral collisions and a dc electric field driving ion flow so that some of them can become unstable. This instability is expected to naturally occur in presheaths of gas discharges at sufficiently small pressures and thus affect sheaths and discharge structures.
Kinetic model of three component, weakly ionized, collisional plasma with a beam of neutral particles is developed. New dispersion relations for linear perturbations are derived and analyzed in various limiting cases.
It is shown that the polarization forces in a weakly ionized plasma lead to a substantial increase in the fluxes of neutral atoms and molecules to the surface of charged nanoparticles. Thus, the nanoparticles can change thermal balance due to the acceleration of atoms and molecules in the dipole potential and subsequent inelastic collisions to the nanoparticles.
In this paper we present a concise overview of our recent results concerning the electric potential distribution around a small charged particle in weakly ionized plasmas. A number of different effects which influence plasma screening properties are considered. Some consequences of the results are discussed, mostly in the context of complex (dusty) plasmas.
A weakly ionized plasma under the influence of a strong electric field is considered. Supposing a local Maxwellian distribution for the electron momenta the plasma is described by hydrodynamic equations for the pair distribution functions. These equations are solved and the relaxation field is calculated for an arbitrary field strength. It is found that the relaxation effect becomes lower with increasing strength of the electrical field.
We consider the generation of sound waves in the air medium between electrodes at the voltages near electrical breakdown in the presence of the time dependent constituent of the electric field. Within the standard multicomponent hydrodynamic model of the weakly ionized gas it is shown that the generation of sound is possible due to instantaneous character of the ionization equilibrium. The influence of the electronegative ions on the sound intensity is also discussed.
We consider weakly ionized plasma where frequent elastic scattering of electrons on neutrals change the individual acts and the rate of electron-electron collisions significantly. In this case, the kinetics of electron thermalization is very different from that in fully ionized plasma. The colliding electrons diffuse because of fast scattering on neutrals. We demonstrate how a proper account of this diffusion enables one to estimate the characteristic time of electron thermalization. We also present a rigorous derivation of the kinetic equation for electrons by using Bogolyubov method based on…
We study the ion response to an initial perturbation in a weakly ionized plasma with ion flow driven by a dc electric field. The analysis is made by extending the classical Landau work [J. Phys. (USSR) 10, 25 (1946)] to the ion kinetic equation including ion-neutral collisions and a dc electric field. We show, in particular, that the complex frequencies of ion waves can be directly found from a known expression for the ion susceptibility [Phys. Rev. E 71, 016405 (2005); Phys. Rep. 27, 997 (2001)]; this is not obvious from its original derivation, because it only aims to describe the ion respon…
The temporal evolution of the magnetic field associated with electron thermal Weibel instability in optical-field ionized plasmas is measured using ultrashort (1.8 ps), relativistic (45 MeV) electron bunches from a linear accelerator. The self-generated magnetic fields are found to self-organize into a quasi-static structure consistent with a helicoid topology within a few ps and such a structure lasts for tens of ps in underdense plasmas. The measured growth rate agrees well with that predicted by the kinetic theory of plasmas taking into account collisions. Magnetic trapping is identified as…
We obtain exact upper and lower bounds on the steady state drift velocity, and kinetic energy of electrons, driven by an external field in a weakly ionized plasma (swarm approximation). The scattering is assumed to be elastic with simplified velocity dependence of the collision cross sections. When the field is large the bounds are close to each other and to the results obtained from the conventional approximation of the Boltzmann equation in which one keeps only the first two terms of a Legendre expansion. The bounds prove rigorously that it is possible to increase the electron mobility by th…
We study the viscosity of light charged particles in weakly ionized plasma with the power-law q-distributions by using the Boltzmann equation of transport and the motion equation of hydrodynamics. The nonequilibrium plasma is considered to be space inhomogeneous and without magnetic field. We derive the expressions of the viscosity coefficients of the electrons and the ions in the q-distributed plasma, including the first and the second viscosity coefficients respectively. It is shown that these new viscosity coefficients depend strongly on the q-parameters, and when we take the limit of q to …
A three species one-dimensional kinetic model is presented for a spatially homogeneous weakly ionized plasma subjected to the action of a time varying electric field. Planar geometry is assumed, which means that the plasma dynamics evolves in the privileged direction of the field. The energy transmitted to the charges is be channelized to the neutrals thanks to collisions and impacting the plasma dynamics. Charge-charge interactions have been designed as a one dimensional collision term equivalent to the Landau operator used for fully ionized plasmas. Charge-neutral collisions are modelled by …
A new one-dimensional fluid model for ions in weakly-ionized plasma is proposed. The model differs from the existing ones in two aspects. First, a more accurate approximation of the collision terms in the fluid equations is suggested. For this purpose, the results obtained using the Monte-Carlo kinetic model of the ion swarm experiments are considered. Second, the ion energy equation is taken into account. The fluid equations are closed using a simple model of the ion velocity distribution function. The accuracy of the fluid model is examined by comparing with the results of particle-in-cell/M…
Intense electric currents called electrojets occur in weakly ionized magnetized plasmas. An example occurs in the Earth's ionosphere near the magnetic equator where neutral winds drive the plasma across the geomagnetic field. Similar processes take place in the Solar chromosphere and MHD generators. This letter argues that not all convective neutral flows generate electrojets and it introduces the corresponding universal criterion for electrojet formation, $\nabla\times (\vec{U}\times\vec{B})\neq\partial\vec{B}/\partial t$, where $\vec{U}$ is the neutral flow velocity, $\vec{B}$ is the magneti…
We study the collision frequency of electron-neutral-particle in the weakly ionized plasma with the power-law velocity q-distribution and derive the formulation of the average collision frequency. We find that the average collision frequency in the q-distributed plasma also depends strongly on the q-parameter and thus is generally different from that in the Maxwell-distributed plasma, which therefore modifies the transport coefficients in the previous studies of the weakly ionized plasmas with the power-law velocity distributions.
We study the diffusion of charged particles in the weakly ionized plasma with the power-law kappa-distributions and without magnetic field. The electrons and ions have different kappa-parameters. We obtain the expressions of both diffusion and mobility coefficients of electrons and ions respectively in the plasma. We find that these new transport coefficient formulae depend strongly on the kappa-parameters in the power-law distributed plasma. When we take kappa to be infinite, these formulae reduce to the classical forms in the weakly ionized plasma with a Maxwellian distribution.
We study the effect of magnetic field on the viscosity of charged particles in the weakly ionized and magnetized plasma with the power-law q-distributions by using the generalized Boltzmann equation of transport in nonextensive statistics. We derive six viscosity coefficients of electrons and ions in the complex plasma, including the magnetic field introduced four viscosity coefficients, where the q-parameter and magnetic field both play significant roles. By numerical analyses, we show that these viscosity coefficients depend strongly on the magnetic field and q-parameters of the weakly ioniz…
Generation and amplification of magnetic fields in plasmas is a long-standing topic that is of great interest to both plasma and space physics. The electron Weibel instability is a well-known mechanism responsible for self-generating magnetic fields in plasmas with temperature anisotropy and has been extensively investigated in both theory and simulations, yet experimental verification of this instability has been challenging. Recently, we demonstrated a new experimental platform that enables the controlled initialization of highly nonthermal and/or anisotropic plasma electron velocity distrib…
We study the diffusion and thermal conductivity of charged particles in the weakly ionized plasma with the power-law q-distributions in nonextensive statistics and without the magnetic field. Electrons and ions have different q-parameters and temperature. We derive new expressions of the diffusion, thermal diffusion, thermal conductivity and thermoelectric coefficients of electrons and ions respectively in the plasma. It is shown that these transport coefficients depend significantly on the q-parameters in the power-law q-distributed plasma and thus they have different properties from those de…
The collision frequencies of electron-neutral-particle in the weakly ionized complex plasmas with the non-Maxwellian velocity distributions are studied. The average collision frequencies of electron-neutral-particle in the plasmas are derived accurately. We find that these collision frequencies are significantly dependent on the power-law spectral indices of non-Maxwellian distribution functions and so they are generally different from the collision frequencies in the plasmas with a Maxwellian velocity distribution, which will affect the transport properties of the charged particles in the pla…
By using the generalized Boltzmann equation of transport and the first-order approximation of Chapman-Enskog expansion on the kappa-distribution function, we study the thermal conductivity and Dufour effects in the weakly ionized and magnetized plasma. We show that in the kappa-distributed plasma, the thermal conductivity and Dufour coefficient are significantly different from those in the Maxell-distributed plasma, and the transverse thermal conductivity and Dufour coefficient in the kappa-distributed plasma are generally greater than those in the Maxwell-distributed plasma, and the Righi-Led…
We study, globaly in time, the velocity distribution $f(v,t)$ of a spatially homogeneous system that models a system of electrons in a weakly ionized plasma, subjected to a constant external electric field $E$. The density $f$ satisfies a Boltzmann type kinetic equation containing a full nonlinear electron-electron collision term as well as linear terms representing collisions with reservoir particles having a specified Maxwellian distribution. We show that when the constant in front of the nonlinear collision kernel, thought of as a scaling parameter, is sufficiently strong, then the $L^1$ di…
By using the generalized Boltzmann equation of transport in nonextensive statistics, we study transport properties of the diffusion flux and the heat flux of charged particles in the weakly ionized plasma with the power-law q-distributions under the magnetic field. We derive the tensor expressions of diffusion coefficient, thermal diffusion coefficient, mobility and thermal conductivity of electrons and ions in the q-distributed plasma under magnetic field. We show that the tensors of the diffusion coefficient, the thermal diffusion coefficient and the thermal conductivity are strongly depend …
We study linear theory of the magnetized Rayleigh-Taylor instability in a system consisting of ions and neutrals. Both components are affected by a uniform vertical gravitational field. We consider ions and neutrals as two separate fluid systems where they can exchange momentum through collisions. However, ions have direct interaction with the magnetic field lines but neutrals are not affected by the field directly. The equations of our two-fluid model are linearized and by applying a set of proper boundary conditions, a general dispersion relation is derived for our two superposed fluids sepa…

The small-scale turbulent dynamo is an important process contributing to the cosmic magnetization. In partially ionized astrophysical plasmas, the dynamo growth of magnetic energy strongly depends on the coupling state between ions and neutrals and the ion-neutral collisional damping effect. A new damping stage of turbulent dynamo in a weakly ionized medium was theoretically predicted by Xu \& Lazarian (2016). By carrying out a 3D two-fluid dynamo simulation, here we for the first time numerically confirmed the physical conditions and the linear-in-time growth of magnetic field strength of the…
The magnetic-Rayleigh--Taylor (MRT) instability is a ubiquitous phenomenon that occurs in magnetically-driven Z-pinch implosions. It is important to understand this instability since it can decrease the performance of such implosions. In this work, I present a theoretical model for the weakly nonlinear MRT instability. I obtain such model by asymptotically expanding an action principle, whose Lagrangian leads to the fully nonlinear MRT equations. After introducing a suitable choice of coordinates, I show that the theory can be cast as a Hamiltonian system, whose Hamiltonian is calculated up to…
We present results from the first self-consistent multi-fluid simulations of chromospheric magnetic reconnection in a weakly ionized reacting plasma. We simulate two dimensional magnetic reconnection in a Harris current sheet with a numerical model which includes ion-neutral scattering collisions, ionization, recombination, optically thin radiative loss, collisional heating, and thermal conduction. In the resulting tearing mode reconnection the neutral and ion fluids become decoupled upstream from the reconnection site, creating an excess of ions in the reconnection region and therefore an ion…
The production of weakly relativistic plasma by microwave electric field with circular polarization has been studied. Electron distribution function obtained for this produced plasma and shown that it is non-equilibrium and anisotropic. It is shown that produced plasma accelerated on direction of propagation microwave electric field. The electron velocity on this direction strongly depends on electron origination phase during ionization and microwave electric field phase and it s amplitude. The dielectric tensor obtained for this plasma and the weibel instability studied for it.
Magnetic reconnection has been intensively studied in fully ionized plasmas. However, plasmas are often partially ionized in astrophysical environments. The interactions between the neutral particles and ionized plasmas might strongly affect the reconnection mechanisms. We review magnetic reconnection in partially ionized plasmas in different environments from theoretical, numerical, observational and experimental points of view. We focus on mechanisms which make magnetic reconnection fast enough to compare with observations, especially on the reconnection events in the low solar atmosphere. T…
It is proposed that the rapid observed homogeneous nucleation of ice dust in a cold, weakly-ionized plasma depends on the formation of hydroxide (OH$^-$) by fast electrons impacting water molecules. These OH$^{-}$ ions attract neutral water molecules because of the high dipole moment of the water molecules and so hydrates of the form (OH)$^{-}$(H$_{2}$O)$_{n}$ are formed. The hydrates continuously grow in the cold environment to become macroscopic ice grains. These ice grains are negatively charged as a result of electron impact and so continue to attract water molecules. Because hydroxide is …
Realistic models of magnetic reconnection in the solar chromosphere must take into account that the plasma is partially ionized and that plasma conditions within any two magnetic flux bundles undergoing reconnection may not be the same. Asymmetric reconnection in the chromosphere may occur when newly emerged flux interacts with pre-existing, overlying flux. We present 2.5D simulations of asymmetric reconnection in weakly ionized, reacting plasmas where the magnetic field strengths, ion and neutral densities, and temperatures are different in each upstream region. The plasma and neutral compone…
The dynamics of linear perturbations in a radiatively cooling dusty plasma is considered, with the charge of both dust ($Z_d$) and plasma ($Z_p$) components being allowed to vary with their densities. It is shown that in the long-wavelength limit corresponding to the characteristic cooling length, when the plasma can be treated as quasineutral, the presence of dust particles changes the criteria for radiation instability, regardless the charging process of the dust particles. In particular, the condensation (isobaric) mode is shown to be stabilized (destabilized) if in the equilibrium, the rel…
Magnetic reconnection in partially ionized plasmas is a ubiquitous phenomenon spanning the range from laboratory to intergalactic scales, yet it remains poorly understood and relatively little studied. Here, we present results from a self-consistent multi-fluid simulation of magnetic reconnection in a weakly ionized reacting plasma with a particular focus on the parameter regime of the solar chromosphere. The numerical model includes collisional transport, interaction and reactions between the species, and optically thin radiative losses. This model improves upon our previous work in Leake et …
The Weibel instability is analyzed for quantum plasmas described by the Wigner-Maxwell model. For a suitable class of electromagnetic potentials, the Wigner-Maxwell system is linearized yielding a general dispersion relation for transverse electromagnetic waves. For a double Gaussian equilibrium with temperature anisotropy, the derived dispersion relation generalizes the classical Weibel instability equation. More detailed analytical results are obtained for the cases of extreme temperature anisotropy and for a three-dimensional water bag distribution. In all cases, quantum effects tends to we…
The saturation mechanism of the Weibel instability is investigated theoretically by considering the evolution of currents in numerous cylindrical beams that are generated in the initial stage of the instability. Based on a physical model of the beams, it is shown that the magnetic field strength attains a maximum value when the currents in the beams evolve into the Alfven current and that there exist two saturation regimes. The theoretical prediction of the magnetic field strength at saturation is in good agreement with the results of two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations for a wide ran…
Streaming cosmic rays can power the exponential growth of a seed magnetic field by exciting a non-resonant instability that feeds on their bulk kinetic energy. By generating the necessary turbulent magnetic field, it is thought to play a key role in the confinement and acceleration of cosmic rays at shocks. In this work we present hybrid-Particle-In-Cell simulations of the non-resonant mode including Monte Carlo collisions, and investigate the interplay between the pressure anisotropies produced by the instability and particle collisions in the background plasma. Simulations of poorly ionized …
The stimulated Raman scattering instability in a fully degenerate electron plasma is studied applying relativistic hydrodynamic and Maxwell equations. We demonstrated that the instability develops for weakly as well as strongly relativistic degenerate plasma. It is shown that in the field of strong radiation relativistically degenerate plasma effectively responses as in the case of weak degeneracy.
We present an analysis of radiation induced instabilities in an expanding plasma with considerable presence of dust particles and equilibrium cooling. We have shown that the equilibrium expansion and cooling destabilize the radiation condensation modes and the presence of dust particles enhances this effect. We have examined our results in the context of ionized, dusty-plasma environments such as those found in planetary nebulae (PNe). We show that due to the non-static equilibrium and finite equilibrium cooling, small-scale localized structures formed out of thermal instability, become transi…
Many astrophysical systems of interest, including protoplanetary accretion disks, are made of turbu- lent magnetized gas with near solar metallicity. Thermal ionization of alkali metals in such gas exceeds non-thermal ionization when temperatures climb above roughly 1000 K. As a result, the conductiv- ity, proportional to the ionization fraction, gains a strong, positive dependence on temperature. In this paper, we demonstrate that this relation between the temperature and the conductivity triggers an exponential instability that acts similarly to an electrical short, where the increased condu…
The filamentation instability of the electromagnetic (EM) beam in an underdense plasma with high level of degeneracy is examined by means of the momentum equation, continuity equation and Maxwell's equations. It has been demonstrated that the instability develops for weakly as well as strongly relativistic degenerate plasma and arbitrary strong amplitude of EM beams.
Modern laser sources nowadays deliver ultrashort light pulses reaching few cycles in duration, high energies beyond the Joule level and peak powers exceeding several terawatt (TW). When such pulses propagate through optically-transparent media, they first self-focus in space and grow in intensity, until they generate a tenuous plasma by photo-ionization. For free electron densities and beam intensities below their breakdown limits, these pulses evolve as self-guided objects, resulting from successive equilibria between the Kerr focusing process, the chromatic dispersion of the medium, and the …
It is well known that additional ionization in the vicinity of a positively biased electrode immersed into a weakly ionized plasma is responsible for a hysteresis in the electrode current-voltage characteristics and the current self-oscillations rise. Here we show both experimentally and theoretically that under certain conditions these phenomena cannot be correctly interpreted once considered separately from the reference electrode current-voltage characteristics. It is shown that small electrodes can be separated into three groups according to the relation between the electrode and the refer…
Energetic electromagnetic emissions by astrophysical jets like those that are launched during the collapse of a massive star and trigger gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are partially attributed to relativistic internal shocks. The shocks are mediated in the collisionless plasma of such jets by the filamentation instability of counterstreaming particle beams. The filamentation instability grows fastest only if the beams move at a relativistic relative speed. We model here with a particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation the collision of two cold pair clouds at the speed c/2 (c: speed of light). We demonstrate …
We study the stability of shear flows in a fully ionized plasma. Kelvin-Helmholtz is a well known, macroscopic and ideal shear-driven instability. In sufficiently low density plasmas, also the microscopic Hall magneto-shear instability can take place. We performed three-dimensional simulations of the Hall-MHD equations where these two instabilities are present, and carried out a comparative study. We find that when the shear flow is so intense that its vorticity surpasses the ion-cyclotron frequency of the plasma, the Hall magneto-shear instability is not only non-negligible, but it actually d…
