We consider weakly ionized plasma where frequent elastic scattering of electrons on neutrals change the individual acts and the rate of electron-electron collisions significantly. In this case, the kinetics of electron thermalization is very different from that in fully ionized plasma. The colliding electrons diffuse because of fast scattering on neutrals. We demonstrate how a proper account of this diffusion enables one to estimate the characteristic time of electron thermalization. We also present a rigorous derivation of the kinetic equation for electrons by using Bogolyubov method based on Liouville equations for multi-particle distribution functions.
Magnetic reconnection has been intensively studied in fully ionized plasmas. However, plasmas are often partially ionized in astrophysical environments. The interactions between the neutral particles and ionized plasmas might strongly affect the reconnection mechanisms. We review magnetic reconnection in partially ionized plasmas in different environments from theoretical, numerical, observational and experimental points of view. We focus on mechanisms which make magnetic reconnection fast enough to compare with observations, especially on the reconnection events in the low solar atmosphere. T…
Kinetic model of three component, weakly ionized, collisional plasma with a beam of neutral particles is developed. New dispersion relations for linear perturbations are derived and analyzed in various limiting cases.
In this paper we present a concise overview of our recent results concerning the electric potential distribution around a small charged particle in weakly ionized plasmas. A number of different effects which influence plasma screening properties are considered. Some consequences of the results are discussed, mostly in the context of complex (dusty) plasmas.
It is shown that the polarization forces in a weakly ionized plasma lead to a substantial increase in the fluxes of neutral atoms and molecules to the surface of charged nanoparticles. Thus, the nanoparticles can change thermal balance due to the acceleration of atoms and molecules in the dipole potential and subsequent inelastic collisions to the nanoparticles.
A weakly ionized plasma under the influence of a strong electric field is considered. Supposing a local Maxwellian distribution for the electron momenta the plasma is described by hydrodynamic equations for the pair distribution functions. These equations are solved and the relaxation field is calculated for an arbitrary field strength. It is found that the relaxation effect becomes lower with increasing strength of the electrical field.
As proved by previous study, the similarity of electromagnetic processes in plasmas will be violated by Coulomb collisions between electron and ions. Therefore, there is no similarity in highly ionized collisional plasma. But the situation will be completely different for collisional plasmas with low ionization degree. The main collision type will change from electron-ion Coulomb collision to electron-molecule collision, and a new variable (the number density of neutral molecules) will be introduced into the similarity constraint, which can increase the degree of freedom. Thus, in this conditio…
We consider the generation of sound waves in the air medium between electrodes at the voltages near electrical breakdown in the presence of the time dependent constituent of the electric field. Within the standard multicomponent hydrodynamic model of the weakly ionized gas it is shown that the generation of sound is possible due to instantaneous character of the ionization equilibrium. The influence of the electronegative ions on the sound intensity is also discussed.
In the solar atmosphere, the chromospheric and coronal plasmas are much hotter than the visible photosphere. The heating of the solar atmosphere, including the partially ionized chromosphere and corona, remains largely unknown. In this paper we demonstrate that the ions can be substantially heated by Alfvén waves with very low frequencies in partially ionized low beta plasmas. This differs from other Alfvén wave related heating mechanisms such as ion-neutral collisional damping of Alfvén waves and heating described by previous work on resonant Alfvén wave heating. In this paper, we find that t…
The fundamental higher-order Landau plasma modes are known to be generally heavily damped. We show that these modes for the ion component in a weakly ionized plasma can be substantially modified by ion-neutral collisions and a dc electric field driving ion flow so that some of them can become unstable. This instability is expected to naturally occur in presheaths of gas discharges at sufficiently small pressures and thus affect sheaths and discharge structures.
We study the viscosity of light charged particles in weakly ionized plasma with the power-law q-distributions by using the Boltzmann equation of transport and the motion equation of hydrodynamics. The nonequilibrium plasma is considered to be space inhomogeneous and without magnetic field. We derive the expressions of the viscosity coefficients of the electrons and the ions in the q-distributed plasma, including the first and the second viscosity coefficients respectively. It is shown that these new viscosity coefficients depend strongly on the q-parameters, and when we take the limit of q to …
We study the ion response to an initial perturbation in a weakly ionized plasma with ion flow driven by a dc electric field. The analysis is made by extending the classical Landau work [J. Phys. (USSR) 10, 25 (1946)] to the ion kinetic equation including ion-neutral collisions and a dc electric field. We show, in particular, that the complex frequencies of ion waves can be directly found from a known expression for the ion susceptibility [Phys. Rev. E 71, 016405 (2005); Phys. Rep. 27, 997 (2001)]; this is not obvious from its original derivation, because it only aims to describe the ion respon…
In a rotating magnetized plasma cylinder with shear, cross-field current can arise from inertial mechanisms and from the cross-field viscosity. Considering these mechanisms, it is possible to calculate the irreducible radial current draw in a cylindrical geometry as a function of the rotation frequency. The resulting expressions raise novel possibilities for tailoring the electric field profile by controlling the density and temperature profiles of a plasma.
Here we study the structure of a highly ionizing shock wave in a gas of high atmospheric pressure. We take into account the gas ionization when the gas temperature reaches few orders of an ionization potential. It is shown that after gasdynamic temperature-raising shock and formation of a highly-ionized nonisothermal plasma $T_e>>T_i$ only the solitary ion-sound wave (soliton) can propagate in this plasma. In such a wave the charge separation occurs: electrons and ions form the double electric layer with the electric field. The shock wave form, its amplitude and front width are obtained.
Numerical simulations of laser-plasma interactions demonstrate the generation of axially polarized electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) that radiate away energy with a characteristic frequency determined by the plasma frequency, in the THz range for typical laser wakefield acceleration experiments. This is confirmed by full 2D electromagnetic particle-in-cell simulations, as well as by a ponderomotively-driven reduced model that captures the EMP generation essentials. When the laser's pulse length matches the plasma wavelength, that pulse's fractional energy losses to the wakefield are independent of…
The temporal evolution of the magnetic field associated with electron thermal Weibel instability in optical-field ionized plasmas is measured using ultrashort (1.8 ps), relativistic (45 MeV) electron bunches from a linear accelerator. The self-generated magnetic fields are found to self-organize into a quasi-static structure consistent with a helicoid topology within a few ps and such a structure lasts for tens of ps in underdense plasmas. The measured growth rate agrees well with that predicted by the kinetic theory of plasmas taking into account collisions. Magnetic trapping is identified as…
A three species one-dimensional kinetic model is presented for a spatially homogeneous weakly ionized plasma subjected to the action of a time varying electric field. Planar geometry is assumed, which means that the plasma dynamics evolves in the privileged direction of the field. The energy transmitted to the charges is be channelized to the neutrals thanks to collisions and impacting the plasma dynamics. Charge-charge interactions have been designed as a one dimensional collision term equivalent to the Landau operator used for fully ionized plasmas. Charge-neutral collisions are modelled by …
We study a partially ionized hydrogen plasma by means of quantum molecular dynamics, which is based on wave packets. We introduce a new model which distinguishes between free and bound electrons. The free electrons are modelled as Gaussian wave packets with fixed width. For the bound states the 1s-wave function of the hydrogen atom is assumed. In our simulations we obtain thermodynamic properties in the equilibrium such as the internal energy and the degree of ionization. The degree of ionization is in good agreement with theoretical predictions. The thermodynamic functions agree well with res…
In a recent paper (Krishan 2021), a two-fluid description of a partially ionized plasma was presented in which electron fluid and the neutral fluid were combined appropriately into one fluid, christened as ENe fluid, and treat the ions as the second fluid. Some of the electrostatic modes of this two-fluid system were studied. Here, I discuss another possibility in which the ion fluid and the neutral fluid are combined into one fluid, christened as INe fluid, and treat the electrons as the second fluid. There can be a huge variation between the relative masses of the neutrals and the ions. Thus…
A high-density magnetized plasma has been studied for understanding of plasma dynamics in partially ionized plasmas. Ion flow field has been obtained experimentally, and is shown to be associated with a vortex formation. The most remarkable result is that the direction of rotation is opposite to that of the ExB drift. Measurement of neutral density profile reveals that there is a steep density gradient of the neutrals around the vortex, suggesting that the generation of inward momentum of the neutrals due to the density gradient. The momentum is transfered to ion with charge-exchange collision…
We obtain exact upper and lower bounds on the steady state drift velocity, and kinetic energy of electrons, driven by an external field in a weakly ionized plasma (swarm approximation). The scattering is assumed to be elastic with simplified velocity dependence of the collision cross sections. When the field is large the bounds are close to each other and to the results obtained from the conventional approximation of the Boltzmann equation in which one keeps only the first two terms of a Legendre expansion. The bounds prove rigorously that it is possible to increase the electron mobility by th…
We study the contribution of electron-atom interaction to the equation of state for partially ionized hydrogen plasma using the cluster-virial expansion. For the first time, we use the Beth-Uhlenbeck approach to calculate the second virial coefficient for the electron-atom (bound cluster) pair from the corresponding scattering phase-shifts and binding energies. Experimental scattering cross-sections as well as phase-shifts calculated on the basis of different pseudopotential models are used as an input for the Beth-Uhlenbeck formula. By including Pauli blocking and screening in the phase-shift…
The properties of a partially ionized plasma in a long cylindrical tube subject to a uniform axial electric field are investigated. The plasma is maintained by an external ionizing source balanced by bulk and surface recombinations. Collisions between neutrals, whose density greatly exceeds the density of charged particles, and of neutrals with ions are sufficiently effective for their velocity distribution to be close to a Maxwellian with the same uniform temperature, independent of the external field. The behavior of the plasma is described by a collisional two-fluid scheme with charge neutr…
Intense electric currents called electrojets occur in weakly ionized magnetized plasmas. An example occurs in the Earth's ionosphere near the magnetic equator where neutral winds drive the plasma across the geomagnetic field. Similar processes take place in the Solar chromosphere and MHD generators. This letter argues that not all convective neutral flows generate electrojets and it introduces the corresponding universal criterion for electrojet formation, $\nabla\times (\vec{U}\times\vec{B})\neq\partial\vec{B}/\partial t$, where $\vec{U}$ is the neutral flow velocity, $\vec{B}$ is the magneti…
We study the collision frequency of electron-neutral-particle in the weakly ionized plasma with the power-law velocity q-distribution and derive the formulation of the average collision frequency. We find that the average collision frequency in the q-distributed plasma also depends strongly on the q-parameter and thus is generally different from that in the Maxwell-distributed plasma, which therefore modifies the transport coefficients in the previous studies of the weakly ionized plasmas with the power-law velocity distributions.
A new one-dimensional fluid model for ions in weakly-ionized plasma is proposed. The model differs from the existing ones in two aspects. First, a more accurate approximation of the collision terms in the fluid equations is suggested. For this purpose, the results obtained using the Monte-Carlo kinetic model of the ion swarm experiments are considered. Second, the ion energy equation is taken into account. The fluid equations are closed using a simple model of the ion velocity distribution function. The accuracy of the fluid model is examined by comparing with the results of particle-in-cell/M…
We study the diffusion of charged particles in the weakly ionized plasma with the power-law kappa-distributions and without magnetic field. The electrons and ions have different kappa-parameters. We obtain the expressions of both diffusion and mobility coefficients of electrons and ions respectively in the plasma. We find that these new transport coefficient formulae depend strongly on the kappa-parameters in the power-law distributed plasma. When we take kappa to be infinite, these formulae reduce to the classical forms in the weakly ionized plasma with a Maxwellian distribution.
The electron residual energy originated from the stochastic heating in under-dense field-ionized plasma is here investigated. The optical response of plasma is initially modeled by using the concept of two counter-propagating electromagnetic waves. The solution of motion equation of a single electron indicates that by including the ionization, the electron with higher residual energy compared to the case without ionization could be obtained. In agreement with chaotic nature of the motion, it is found that the electron residual energy will significantly be changed by applying a minor change to …
We demonstrate optical guiding of high-intensity laser pulses in long, low density hydrodynamic optical-field-ionized (HOFI) plasma channels. An axicon lens is used to generate HOFI plasma channels with on-axis electron densities as low as $n_e(0) = 1.5\times 10^{17}\, \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$ and matched spot sizes in the range $ 20 μ\mathrm{m} \lesssim W_M \lesssim 40 μ\mathrm{m}$. Control of these channel parameters via adjustment of the initial cell pressure and the delay after the arrival of the channel-forming pulse is demonstrated. For laser pulses with a peak axial intensity of $4 \times 10^{…
X-ray Thomson scattering is being developed as a method to measure the temperature, electron density, and ionization state of high energy density plasmas such as those used in inertial confinement fusion. Most experiments are currently done at large laser facilities that can create bright X-ray sources, however the advent of the X-ray free electron laser (X-FEL) provides a new bright source to use in these experiments. One challenge with X-ray Thomson scattering experiments is understanding how to model the scattering for partially ionized plasmas in order to include the contributions of the b…
For the last decade numerous researchers have been trying to develop experimental techniques to use X-ray Thomson scattering as a method to measure the temperature, electron density, and ionization state of high energy density plasmas such as those used in inertial confinement fusion. With the advent of the X-ray free electron laser (X-FEL) at the SLAC Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) we now have such a source available in the keV regime. One challenge with X-ray Thomson scattering experiments is understanding how to model the scattering for partially ionized plasmas. Most Thomson scattering…
A new modeling way of describing the continuous absorption of electromagnetic (EM) radiation in dense partially ionized hydrogen plasma is tested in this work. It is shown that the obtained results give a possibility of calculating spectral absorption coefficients which characterize the relevant absorption processes in partially ionized hydrogen plasmas with electron densities $N_{e} \sim 10^{19}cm^{-3}$ and temperatures $T \approx 2\cdot 10^{4}K$. A key parameter of the used procedure is determined empirically. The calculation method is applied to wavelength region $300nm < λ< 500nm$. The pre…
This paper develops a unified linear theory of local cross-field plasma instabilities, such as the Farley-Buneman, electron thermal, and ion thermal instabilities, in collisional plasmas with fully or partially unmagnetized multi-species ions. Collisional lasma instabilities in low-ionized, highly dissipative, weakly magnetized plasmas play an important role in the lower Earth's ionosphere and may be of importance in other planet ionospheres, star atmospheres, cometary tails, molecular clouds, accretion disks, etc. In the solar chromosphere, macroscopic effects of collisional plasma instabilit…
An experimental study of Ion Acoustic (IA) wave propagation is performed to investigate the effect of neutral density for argon plasma in an unmagnetized linear plasma device. The neutral density is varied by changing the neutral pressure, which in turn allows the change in ion-neutral, and electron-neutral collision mean free path. The collisions of plasma species with neutrals are found to modify the IA wave characteristics such as the wave amplitude, velocity, and propagation length. Unlike the earlier reported work where neutrals tend to heavily damp IA wave in the frequency regime ω<ν_in …
We study the effect of magnetic field on the viscosity of charged particles in the weakly ionized and magnetized plasma with the power-law q-distributions by using the generalized Boltzmann equation of transport in nonextensive statistics. We derive six viscosity coefficients of electrons and ions in the complex plasma, including the magnetic field introduced four viscosity coefficients, where the q-parameter and magnetic field both play significant roles. By numerical analyses, we show that these viscosity coefficients depend strongly on the magnetic field and q-parameters of the weakly ioniz…
By using the generalized Boltzmann equation of transport and the first-order approximation of Chapman-Enskog expansion on the kappa-distribution function, we study the thermal conductivity and Dufour effects in the weakly ionized and magnetized plasma. We show that in the kappa-distributed plasma, the thermal conductivity and Dufour coefficient are significantly different from those in the Maxell-distributed plasma, and the transverse thermal conductivity and Dufour coefficient in the kappa-distributed plasma are generally greater than those in the Maxwell-distributed plasma, and the Righi-Led…
X-ray Thomson scattering is being developed as a method to measure the temperature, electron density, and ionization state of high energy density plasmas such as those used in inertial confinement fusion. X-ray laser sources have always been of interest because of the need to have a bright monochromatic x-ray source to overcome plasma emission and eliminate other lines in the background that complicate the analysis. With the advent of the xray free electron laser (X-FEL) at the SLAC Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) and other facilities coming online worldwide, we now have such a source avail…
Generation and amplification of magnetic fields in plasmas is a long-standing topic that is of great interest to both plasma and space physics. The electron Weibel instability is a well-known mechanism responsible for self-generating magnetic fields in plasmas with temperature anisotropy and has been extensively investigated in both theory and simulations, yet experimental verification of this instability has been challenging. Recently, we demonstrated a new experimental platform that enables the controlled initialization of highly nonthermal and/or anisotropic plasma electron velocity distrib…
Brown, Preston, and Singleton (BPS) produced an analytic calculation for energy exchange processes for a weakly to moderately coupled plasma: the electron-ion temperature equilibration rate and the charged particle stopping power. These precise calculations are accurate to leading and next-to-leading order in the plasma coupling parameter, and to all orders for two-body quantum scattering within the plasma. Classical molecular dynamics can provide another approach that can be rigorously implemented. It is therefore useful to compare the predictions from these two methods, particularly since th…
The collision frequencies of electron-neutral-particle in the weakly ionized complex plasmas with the non-Maxwellian velocity distributions are studied. The average collision frequencies of electron-neutral-particle in the plasmas are derived accurately. We find that these collision frequencies are significantly dependent on the power-law spectral indices of non-Maxwellian distribution functions and so they are generally different from the collision frequencies in the plasmas with a Maxwellian velocity distribution, which will affect the transport properties of the charged particles in the pla…
Transport processes in the fully ionized plasma with kappa-distribution and in strong magnetic field are studied. By analyzing the current density and the heat flux in the kappa-distributed plasma, we derive the corresponding transport coefficients, including the electric conductivity, the thermal conductivity and thermoelectric coefficient. Besides, we derive the coefficients of Hall, Nernst and Leduc-Righi effects in the kappa-distributed plasma. It is shown that these new transport coefficients depend strongly on the kappa-parameter and only in the limit kappa to infinity, they recover the …
We study the diffusion and thermal conductivity of charged particles in the weakly ionized plasma with the power-law q-distributions in nonextensive statistics and without the magnetic field. Electrons and ions have different q-parameters and temperature. We derive new expressions of the diffusion, thermal diffusion, thermal conductivity and thermoelectric coefficients of electrons and ions respectively in the plasma. It is shown that these transport coefficients depend significantly on the q-parameters in the power-law q-distributed plasma and thus they have different properties from those de…
A nonlinear time dependent fluid simulation model is developed that describes the evolution of magnetohydrodynamic waves in the presence of collisional and charge exchange interactions of a partially ionized plasma. The partially ionized plasma consists of electrons, ions and a significant number of neutral atoms. In our model, the electrons and ions are described by a single fluid compressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) model and are coupled self-consistently to the neutral gas, described by the compressible hydrodynamic equations. Both the plasma and neutral fluids are treated with different …
A scheme which allows to compute the dynamics of strongly correlated classical ions embedded into a partiallzy ionized quantum plasma by first principles molecular dynamics is presented. The dynamically screened dust approach of Joyce and Lampe [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 88}, 095006 (2002] ist generalized to quantum systems. The electrons are treated fully quantum-mechanically taking into account their dynamical screening of the ion-ion interaction in linear response on the basis of an extended Mermin formula. The scheme allows to include the effect of the electron dynamics, electron streaming, wa…
The properties of surface waves in the partially ionized, incompressible magnetized plasma slab are investigated in the present work. The waves are affected by the non ideal MHD effects which causes the finite drift of the magnetic field in the medium. When the finite drift of the magnetic field is ignored, the characteristics of the wave propagation in the partially ionized plasma fluid is similar to the ideal MHD except now the propagation properties depend on the fractional ionization of the medium. In the presence of Hall diffusion, the propagation of the sausage and kink surface waves dep…

The instantaneous charge state of uranium ions traveling through a fully ionized hydrogen plasma has been theoretically studied and compared with one of the first energy loss experiments in plasmas, carried out at GSI-Darmstadt by Hoffmann \textit{et al.} in the 90's. For this purpose, two different methods to estimate the instantaneous charge state of the projectile have been employed: (1) rate equations using ionization and recombination cross sections, and (2) equilibrium charge state formulas for plasmas. Also, the equilibrium charge state has been obtained using these ionization and recom…
The temperature dependence of rates of electron impact ionization and two electrons recombination are calculated using Wannier cross section of electron impact ionization of neutral hydrogen atom. Entropy production and power dissipation are derived for the case when the ionization degree deviates from its equilibrium value. This is the special case of the obtained general formula for entropy production accompanying chemical reactions. Damping rate of the sound waves is calculated and the conditions when ionization processes dominate are considered. A quasi-classical approximation for the heat…
