The mechanism of the evolution of the deformed microstructure at the earliest stage of annealing where the existence of the lowest length scale substructure paves the way to the formation of the so-called subgrains, has been studied for the first time. The study has been performed at high temperature on heavily deformed Ti-modified austenitic stainless steel using X-ray diffraction technique. Significant changes were observed in the values of the domain size, both with time and temperature. Two different types of mechanism have been proposed to be involved during the microstructural evolution at the earliest stages of annealing. The nature of the growth of domains with time at different temperatures has been modelled using these mechanisms. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy has been used to view the microstructure of the deformed and annealed sample and the results have been corroborated successfully with those found from the X-ray diffraction techniques.
The effect of crystallography on transgranular chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking (TGCISCC) of arc welded 304L austenitic stainless steel is studied on >300 grains along crack paths. Schmid and Taylor factor mismatches across grain boundaries (GBs) reveal that cracks propagate either from a hard to soft grain, which can be explained merely by mechanical arguments, or soft to hard grain. In the latter case, finite element analysis reveals that TGCISCC will arrest at GBs without sufficient mechanical stress, favorable crystallographic orientations, or crack tip corrosion. GB type does no…
In the present study, an attempt has been made to understand the effect of different competing mechanisms controlling the overall degree of sensitization (DOS) of deformed austenitic stainless steel at the early stage of sensitization. The Double Loop Electrochemical Potentiokinetic Reactivation (DL-EPR) studies were performed to characterize the Degree of Sensitization (DOS) as functions of pre-defined strain and sensitization temperature. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) were used to explain the phenomena qualitatively. A non monotonous behaviour in the variatio…
Irradiation Assisted Stress Corrosion Cracking (IASCC) is a material degradation phenomenon affecting austenitic stainless steels used in nuclear Pressurized Water Reactors (PWR), leading to the initiation and propagation of intergranular cracks. Such phenomenon belongs to the broader class of InterGranular Stress Corrosion Cracking (IGSCC). A micromechanical analysis of IGSCC of an irradiated austenitic stainless steel is performed in this study to assess local cracking conditions. A 304L proton irradiated sample tested in PWR environment and showing intergranular cracking is investigated. Se…
Passivation mechanisms were investigated on (100)-oriented Fe-18Cr-13Ni surfaces with direct transfer between surface preparation and analysis by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy and electrochemical characterization. Starting from oxide-free surfaces, pre-oxidation at saturation under ultra-low pressure (ULP) oxygen markedly promotes the oxide film Cr(III) enrichment and hinders/delays subsequent iron oxidation in water-containing environment. Exposure to sulfuric acid at open circuit potential causes preferential dissolution of oxidized iron species. Anodic p…
The effect of hydrogen on the fracture behaviour of austenitic stainless steel has been investigated in the past [1][2]. It has been reported that fracture initiates by void formation at inclusions and regions of enhanced strain localisation [3]. There is experimental evidence that supports the fact that hydrogen influences void nucleation, growth and coalescence during material fracture [4]. This work investigates the effect of hydrogen on void growth and coalescence in austenitic stainless steel. The effect of hydrogen on void growth and coalescence for different stress triaxialities has bee…
A model has been developed which simulates the deformation of single crystal austenitic stainless steels and cap-tures the effects of hydrogen on stress corrosion cracking. The model is based on the crystal plasticity theory which relates critical resolved shear stress to plastic strain and the strength of the crystal. We propose an analytical repre-sentation of hydrogen interactions with the material microstructure during deformation and simulate the effects hydrogen will have on void growth prior to fracture. Changes in the mechanical properties of the crystal prior to fracture are governed …
High temperature atomic configurations of fcc Fe-Cr-Ni alloys with alloy composition close to austenitic steel are studied in statistical thermodynamic simulations with effective interactions obtained in ab initio calculations. The latter are done taking longitudinal spin fluctuations (LSF) into consideration within a quasiclassical phenomenological model. It is demonstrated that magnetic state affects greatly the alloy properties and in particular, it is shown that the LSF substantially modify the bonding and interatomic interactions of fcc Fe-Cr-Ni alloys even at ambient conditions. The calc…
Interstitials (carbon and nitrogen) are crucial alloying elements for optimizing the mechanical performance of the twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steels in terms of the stacking fault energy (SFE). First-principles calculations have been performed to study the effect of interstitial-induced lattice expansion on the SFE. Comparing the predictions with the SFEs measured for alloys containing C and N, our results suggest that the dominant effect of these interstitials on the SFE is due to the lattice expansion effect.
Hydrogen embrittlement in 304L (18wt.% Cr, 8-10wt.% Ni) austenitic stainless steel (ASS) fabricated by laser powder-bed-fusion (LPBF) was investigated by tensile testing after electrochemical hydrogen pre-charging and compared to conventionally available 304L ASSs with two different processing histories, (i) casting plus annealing (CA) and (ii) CA plus thermomechanical treatment (TMT). It was revealed that hydrogen-charging led to a significant reduction in ductility for the CA sample, but only a small effect of hydrogen was observed for the LPBF and CA-TMT samples. Hydrogen-assisted cracking …
Understanding the mechanism of martensitic transformation is of great importance in developing advanced high strength steels, especially TRansformation-Induced Plasticity (TRIP) steels. The TRIP effect leads to enhanced work-hardening rate, postponed onset of necking and excellent formability. In-situ transmission electron microscopy has been performed to systematically investigate the dynamic interactions between dislocations and alpha martensite at microscale. Local stress concentrations, e.g. from notches or dislocation pile-ups, render free edges and grain boundaries favorable nucleation s…
This work addresses the early stages ($\le$1000 h) of the dissolution corrosion behavior of 316L and DIN 1.4970 austenitic stainless steels in contact with oxygen-poor (C$_O$ < 10$^-$$^8$ mass%), static liquid lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) at 500°C for 600-1000 h. The objective of this study was to determine the relative early-stage resistance of the uncoated steels to dissolution corrosion and to assess the protectiveness of select candidate coatings (Cr$_2$AlC, Al$_2$O$_3$, V$_2$Al$_x$C$_y$). The simultaneous exposure of steels with intended differences in microstructure and thermomechanical s…
Traditional member-based two-step design approaches included in current structural codes for steel structures, as well as more recent system-based direct-design alternatives, require building rigorous structural reliability frameworks for the calibration of partial coefficients (resistance factors) to achieve specified target reliability requirements. Key design parameters affecting the strength of structures and their random variations are generally modelled by nominal or characteristic values in design standards, which are combined with partial coefficients that need to be calibrated from me…
We study three structurally different states of nanocrystalline 316 steel and show that the state, where boundaries containing excess concentration of alloying elements are combined with mobile dislocations in grain interiors, allows maintaining extraordinarily high strength and remarkably enhanced plasticity. Underlying mechanisms featuring interaction between the segregations and mobile dislocations are discussed.
Effect of ECAP and heat treatment on mechanical properties, stress relaxation behavior and corrosion resistance of a 321-type austenitic steel with increased delta-ferrite content
In order to predict InterGranular Stress Corrosion Cracking (IGSCC) of post-irradiated austenitic stainless steel in Light Water Reactor (LWR) environment, reliable predictions of intergranular stresses are required. Finite elements simulations have been performed on realistic polycrystalline aggregate with a recently proposed physically-based crystal plasticity constitutive equations validated for neutron-irradiated austenitic stainless steel. Intergranular normal stress probability density functions are found with respect to plastic strain and irradiation level, for uniaxial loading conditio…
Stacking fault energy (SFE) is of the most critical microstructure attribute for controlling the deformation mechanism and optimizing mechanical properties of austenitic steels, while there are no accurate and straightforward computational tools for modeling it. In this work, we applied both thermodynamic modeling and machine learning to predict the stacking fault energy (SFE) for more than 300 austenitic steels. The comparison indicates a high need of improving low-temperature CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) databases and interfacial energy prediction to enhance thermodynamic model re…
Metal anodes in high power source (HPS) devices erode during operation due to hydrogen outgassing and plasma formation, both of which are thermally driven phenomena generated by the electron beam impacting the anode s surface. This limits the lowest achievable pressure in an HPS device, which reduces its efficiency. Laser surface melting the 304 stainless steel anodes by a continuous wave fiber laser showed a reduction in hydrogen outgassing by a factor of ~4 under 50 keV electron bombardment, compared to that from untreated stainless steel. This is attributed to an increase in the grain size …
A metastable austenitic Fe-Cr-Ni steel was processed by selective laser melting with low power, resulting in nearly random crystallographic texture. In-situ tensile loading and neutron diffraction experiments were undertaken and the results indicate high ductility, despite the presence of porosity, and pronounced strain-induced martensitic transformation. A secondary hardening is observed in the mechanical data due to the martensite carrying significant load, upon its formation. The pronounced martensitic transformation is discussed with respect to the initial and the evolving deformation text…
Ultrathin passive films effectively prevent the chemical attack of stainless steel grades in corrosive environments; their stability critically depends on the interplay between structure and chemistry of the constituents Fe-Cr-Mo. In particular, nanoscale inhomogeneities along the surface can have a tremendous impact on material failure, but are yet barely understood. Addressing a stainless-type glass-forming Fe50Cr15Mo14C15B6 alloy and utilizing a combination of complementary high-resolution analytical techniques, we relate near-atomistic insight into different gradual nanostructures with tim…
Additive manufacturing (AM) by laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF) leads to the formation of a rich, hierarchical microstructure, including dislocation cell structures and elemental segregation. This structure has profound impacts on the corrosion behavior and mechanical properties of printed materials. In this study, we use in situ liquid cell scanning transmission electron microscope (STEM) to directly characterize the nanoscale origins of corrosion initiation in AM 316L stainless steel. Under applied anodic potentials, we found that the dislocation cellular boundaries were preferentially corrod…
Iron-chromium forms the basis of most of the stainless steel grades in the markets. Recently new insights into the physical and chemical properties of Fe-Cr based alloys have been obtained. Some of the new results are quite unexpected and call for further investigations. The present study addresses the magnetic contribution in the atomic driving forces behind the chemical composition in Fe-Cr alloyed with Al, Ti, V, Mn, Co, Ni, and Mo. Using the ab initio exact muffin-tin orbitals method and an Ising-type spin model, it is found that the magnetic moment of the solute atom combined with the ind…
Slow strain rates tests (SSRT) were conducted on hydrogen-containing specimens of PH13-8Mo maraging stainless steel. Hydrogen-assisted subcritical quasi-cleavage cracking was shown to take place during SSRT, thus accelerating material failure. Fractographic analysis showed that quasi-cleavage is composed of flat brittle areas and rougher areas. Using cross-sectional electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis of a secondary subcritically grown crack, we observed brittle cracks propagated across martensite blocks ahead the main crack tip. These cracks were stopped at high-angle boundaries.…
My scientific activities aim at understand and predict the mechanical behaviour of steels, from fundamental mechanisms to macroscopic deformation. This manuscript is dedicated to the TWIP effect (TWinning Induced Plasticity) of high manganese austenitic steels and DP effect (Dual-Phase) in more conventional Ferrite-Martensite steels.
The durability of passivable metals and alloys is often limited by the stability of the surface oxide film, the passive film, providing self-protection against corrosion in aggressive environments. Improving this stability requires to develop a deeper understanding of the surface structure and initial surface reactivity at the nanometric or atomic scale. In this work we applied scanning tunneling microscopy to unravel the surface structure of a model stainless steel surface in the metallic state and its local modifications induced by initial reaction in dioxygen gas. The results show a rich an…
Time of Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectroscopy, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, in situ Photo-Current Spectroscopy and electrochemical analysis were combined to characterize the physicochemical alterations induced by electrochemical passivation of the surface oxide film providing corrosion resistance to 316L stainless steel. The as-prepared surface is covered by a ~2 nm thick, mixed (Cr(III)-Fe(III)) and bi-layered hydroxylated oxide. The inner layer is highly enriched in Cr(III) and the outer layer less so. Molybdenum is concentrated, mostly as Mo(VI), in the outer layer. Nickel is only pre…
Two finite element level-set (FE-LS) formulations are compared for the modeling of grain growth of 316L stainless steel in terms of grain size, mean values and histograms. Two kinds of microstructures are considered, some are generated statistically from EBSD maps and the others are generated by immersion of EBSD data in the FE formulation. Grain boundary (GB) mobility is heterogeneously defined as a function of the GB disorientation. On the other hand, GB energy is considered as heterogeneous or anisotropic, respectively defined as a function of the disorientation and both the GB misorientati…
The influence of mechanical strain on the critical current (Ic) is investigated for MgB2/stainless steel (SUS316) superconducting tapes. The tapes are fabricated by using 'powder in tube' method and deformation process without any heat treatment. The tensile axial strain along tape length is successfully induced to the sample by using a U-shape holder made of stainless steel (SUS304). Two samples are examined at 4.2 K in 5 T (B is applied perpendicular to the tape surface). While the initial Ic at zero external strain state (Ic0) varies (30.4 and 33.3 A), normalized Ic (Ic/Ic0) vs. external st…
This study presents experimental and computational analyses of the phase composition and mechanical behavior of a functionally graded material (FGM) grading from 100 vol% 304L stainless steel (SS304L) to 100 vol% Ni-20Cr (NiCr) in 10 vol% increments. The mechanical behavior of the FGM was evaluated by extracting tensile specimens from SS304L-rich and NiCr-rich regions of the FGM, with the former behaving in a ductile manner and the latter being relatively brittle. The brittle response of the NiCr-rich sample was explained by the presence of the eutectic FCC+BCC phase in this sample, as identif…
We present an original approach for predicting the static recrystallization texture development during annealing of deformed crystalline materials. The microstructure is considered as a population of subgrains and grains whose sizes and boundary properties determine their growth rates. The model input parameters are measured directly on orientation maps maps of the deformed microstructure measured by electron backscattered diffraction. The anisotropy in subgrain properties then drives a competitive growth giving rise to the recrystallization texture development. The method is illustrated by a …
The elastoplastic behavior of a two-phase stainless steel alloy is explored at the crystal scale for five levels of stress biaxiality. The crystal lattice (elastic) strains were measured with neutron diffraction using tubular samples subjected to different combinations of axial load and internal pressure to achieve a range of biaxial stress ratios. Finite element simulations were conducted on virtual polycrystals using loading histories that mimicked the experimental protocols. For this, two-phase microstructures were instantiated based on microscopy images of the grain and phase topologies an…
Stainless steel particles (60 $μ$m in mean diameter) cladded with an alumina shell (2 $μ$m thick and manufactured by mechanofusion) were sprayed with an Ar-H2 (53-7 slm) d.c. plasma jet (I = 500 A, P = 28 kW, ρ_th = 56 %). Two main types of particles were collected in flight, as close as 50 mm downstream of the nozzle exit: particles with a steel core with pieces of alumina unevenly distributed at their surface and those consisting of a spherical stainless steel particle with an alumina cap. The plasma flow was modeled by a 2D steady parabolic model and a single particle trajectory by using th…

During the strip rolling process, a considerable amount of the forces of the material pressure cause elastic deformation on the work-roll, i.e., the deflection process. The uncontrollable amount of the work-roll deflection leads to the high deviations in the permissible thickness of the plate along its width. In the context of the Austenitic Stainless Steels (ASS), due to the instability of the Austenite phase in a cold temperature, cold deformation leads to the production of Strain-Induced Martensite (SIM), which improves the mechanical properties. It leads to the hardening of the ASS 316L du…
A three-dimensional model of a partially melted powder bed with particles stochastically distributed in size and space coordinates has been developed. Numerical simulation of temperature distributions in stainless steel AISI 316L and Al-12Si powders in vacuum, air and argon has been performed to analyze unsteady heat transfer in a porous medium. The numerical model demonstrates a large effect of heat transfer through the gas phase in case of powders with low thermal conductivities like stainless steels. At the porosity level of 65\% and above, the mechanism of heat transfer drastically changes…

Unlike the vast amount of irradiated material data that exists for stainless steel internals from LWRs, with high fast neutron flux and an irradiation temperature of~330oC, the CANDU reactor is unique with a high thermal spectrum stainless steel components peripheral to the core. In particular, the CANDU design contains an austenitic stainless steel calandria vessel, which contains the heavy water moderator at a temperature of 60-80oC. This article explores the effects of low (60-80oC) and moderate (300-360oC) irradiation temperature on irradiation induced defects and defect sinks, both in ter…
Laser Shock Peening (LSP) of stainless-steel 316 and 316L was studied using Ti: Sapphire laser pulses of about 2 ps duration, maximum energy of about 1mJ and pulse repetition rate of 5kHz in different liquid confinement media of Ethanol, Deionized water and separate aqueous solutions of NaCl and Glycerol. It is found that the laser fluence and/or energy attenuating mechanisms like self-focusing, filamentation, plasma breakdown in the confinement media are less significant with ps laser pulses than those with sub-ps or fs pulse durations. It is shown that the resulting surface hardness of the p…
We have taken advantage of the native surface roughness and the iron content of AISI 316 stainless steel to direct grow multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) random networks by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) at low-temperature ($< 1000^{\circ}$C), without the addition of any external catalysts or time-consuming pre-treatments. In this way, super-hydrophobic MWCNT films on stainless steel sheets were obtained, exhibiting high contact angle values ($154^{\circ}$) and high adhesion force (high contact angle hysteresis). Furthermore, the investigation of MWCNT films at scanning electron microscopy…
We present a comprehensive set of first principles electronic structure calculations to study transition metal solutes and their interactions with point defects in austenite. Clear trends were observed across the series. Solute-defect interactions were strongly correlated to the solute size factors, consistent with local strain field effects. Strong correlations with results in ferrite show insensitivity to the underlying crystal structure in Fe. Oversized solutes act as strong traps for vacancy and self-interstitial defects and as nucleation sites for the development of proto-voids and small …
Vertically aligned carbon nanotube (CNT) forests are a particularly interesting class of nanomaterials, because they combine multifunctional properties, such as high energy absorption, compressive strength, recoverability and super-hydrophobicity with light weight. These characteristics make them suitable for application as coating, protective layers and antifouling substrates for metallic pipelines and blades. Direct growth of CNT forests on metals offers the possibility to transfer the tunable CNT functionalities directly onto the desired substrates. Here, we focus on characterizing the stru…
Slip activation, slip band interactions, and GND densities in iron-base, galling resistant alloy Nitronic 60 have been characterised at the grain length scale using small-scale mechanical testing with high resolution digital image correlation and high-angular resolution electron backscatter diffraction. By correlating the two measurement techniques, new insight into slip band interactions, the generation of lattice curvature and the corresponding accumulation of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) is provided. Multiple discrete slip bands are typically active within single grains, resu…
The iron-chromium alloy and its derivatives are widely used for their remarkable resistance to corrosion, which only occurs in a narrow concentration range around 9 to 13 atomic percent chromium. Although known to be due to chromium enrichment of a few atoms thick layer at the surfaces, the understanding of its complex atomistic origin has been a remaining challenge. We report an investigation of the thermodynamics of such surfaces at the atomic scale by means of Monte Carlo simulations. We use a Hamiltonian which provides a parameterization of previous ab initio results and successfully descr…
The fabrication, characterisation, and superconductivity of MgB2 thick films grown on stainless steel substrate were studied. XRD, SEM, and magnetic measurements were carried out. It was found that the MgB2 thick films can be fast formed by heating samples to 660 oC then immediately cooling down to room temperature. XRD shows above 90% MgB2 phase and less than 10 % MgO. However, the samples sintered at 800 oC for 4 h contain both MgB4 and MgO impurities in addition to MgB2. The fast formed MgB2 films appear to have a good grain connectivity that gives a Jc of 8 x 10 4 A/cm2at 5 K and 1 T and m…
Various mechanisms have been proposed for hydrogen embrittlement, but the causation of hydrogen-induced material degradation has remained unclear. This work shows hydrogen embrittlement due to phase instability (decomposition). In-situ diffraction measurements revealed metastable hydrides formed in stainless steel, typically declared as a non-hydride forming material. Hydride formation is possible by increasing the hydrogen chemical potential during electrochemical charging and low defect formation energy of hydrogen interstitials. Our findings demonstrate that hydrogen-induced material degrad…
The High Nitrogen Martensitic Stainless Steel (HNMS) was subjected to three different austenitizing cycles of 1050$^\circ$C, 1075$^\circ$C and 1100$^\circ$C followed by subzero treatment at -70$^\circ$C. The fraction of retained austenite has been reduced after sub-zero treatment as revealed by microstructural evolution. The material was subsequently tempered at different temperatures ranging from 180$^\circ$C to 650$^\circ$C and the change in micro-structure, hardness, tensile strength and toughness were investigated after each heat treatment cycle. Optical microscopy, electron microscopy wit…
