Kitaev, Liese, Remmel, and Sagan recently defined generalized factor order on words comprised of letters from a partially ordered set $(P, \leq_P)$ by setting $u \leq_P w$ if there is a subword $v$ of $w$ of the same length as $u$ such that the $i$-th character of $v$ is greater than or equal to the $i$-th character of $u$ for all $i$. This subword $v$ is called an embedding of $u$ into $w$. For the case where $P$ is the positive integers with the usual ordering, they defined the weight of a word $w = w_1\ldots w_n$ to be $\text{wt}(w) = x^{\sum_{i=1}^n w_i} t^{n}$, and the corresponding weight generating function $F(u;t,x) = \sum_{w \geq_P u} \text{wt}(w)$. They then defined two words $u$ and $v$ to be Wilf equivalent, denoted $u \backsim v$, if and only if $F(u;t,x) = F(v;t,x)$. They also defined the related generating function $S(u;t,x) = \sum_{w \in \mathcal{S}(u)} \text{wt}(w)$ where $\mathcal{S}(u)$ is the set of all words $w$ such that the only embedding of $u$ into $w$ is a suffix of $w$, and showed that $u \backsim v$ if and only if $S(u;t,x) = S(v;t,x)$. We continue this study by giving an explicit formula for $S(u;t,x)$ if $u$ factors into a weakly increasing word followed by a weakly decreasing word. We use this formula as an aid to classify Wilf equivalence for all words of length 3. We also show that coefficients of related generating functions are well-known sequences in several special cases. Finally, we discuss a conjecture that if $u \backsim v$ then $u$ and $v$ must be rearrangements, and the stronger conjecture that there also must be a weight-preserving bijection $f: \mathcal{S}(u) \rightarrow \mathcal{S}(v)$ such that $f(u)$ is a rearrangement of $u$ for all $u$.
The subjects of rook equivalence and Wilf equivalence have both attracted considerable attention over the last half-century. In this paper we introduce a new notion of Wilf equivalence for integer partitions, and, using this notion, we prove that rook equivalence implies Wilf equivalence. We also prove that if we refine the notions of rook and Wilf equivalence in a natural way, then these two notions coincide. In [6] we prove that Wilf equivalence implies rook equivalence.
On super-strong Wilf equivalence classes of permutations
We introduce "fertility Wilf equivalence," "strong fertility Wilf equivalence," and "postorder Wilf equivalence," three variants of Wilf equivalence for permutation classes that formalize some phenomena that have appeared in the study of West's stack-sorting map. We introduce "sliding operators" and show that they induce useful bijections among sets of valid hook configurations. Combining these maps with natural decompositions of valid hook configurations, we give infinitely many examples of fertility, strong fertility, and postorder Wilf equivalences. As a consequence, we obtain infinitely ma…
A frequent topic in the study of pattern avoidance is identifying when two sets of patterns $Π, Π'$ are Wilf equivalent, that is, when $|\text{Av}_n(Π)| = |\text{Av}_n(Π')|$ for all $n$. In recent work of Dokos et al. the notion of Wilf equivalence was refined to reflect when avoidance of classical patterns preserves certain statistics. In this article, we continue their work by examining $\text{des}$-Wilf equivalence when avoiding certain non-classical patterns.
Two permutations $π$ and $τ$ are c-Wilf equivalent if, for each $n$, the number of permutations in $S_n$ avoiding $π$ as a consecutive pattern (i.e., in adjacent positions) is the same as the number of those avoiding $τ$. In addition, $π$ and $τ$ are strongly c-Wilf equivalent if, for each $n$ and $k$, the number of permutations in $S_n$ containing $k$ occurrences of $π$ as a consecutive pattern is the same as for $τ$. In this paper we introduce a third, more restrictive equivalence relation, defining $π$ and $τ$ to be super-strongly c-Wilf equivalent if the above condition holds for any set o…
Stankova and West showed that for any non-negative integer $s$ and any permutation $γ$ of $\{4,5,\dots,s+3\}$ there are as many permutations that avoid $231γ$ as there are that avoid $312γ$. We extend this result to the setting of words.
Inversion sequences are finite sequences of non-negative integers, where the value of each entry is bounded from above by its position. Patterns in inversion sequences have been studied by Corteel-Martinez-Savage-Weselcouch and Mansour-Shattuck in the classical case, where patterns can occur in any positions, and by Auli-Elizalde in the consecutive case, where only adjacent entries can form an occurrence of a pattern. These papers classify classical and consecutive patterns of length 3 into Wilf equivalence classes according to the number of inversion sequences avoiding them. In this paper we …
Let $π\in \mathfrak{S}_m$ and $σ\in \mathfrak{S}_n$ be permutations. An occurrence of $π$ in $σ$ as a consecutive pattern is a subsequence $σ_i σ_{i+1} \cdots σ_{i+m-1}$ of $σ$ with the same order relations as $π$. We say that patterns $π, τ\in \mathfrak{S}_m$ are strongly c-Wilf equivalent if for all $n$ and $k$, the number of permutations in $\mathfrak{S}_n$ with exactly $k$ occurrences of $π$ as a consecutive pattern is the same as for $τ$. In 2018, Dwyer and Elizalde conjectured (generalizing a conjecture of Elizalde from 2012) that if $π, τ\in \mathfrak{S}_m$ are strongly c-Wilf equivalen…
In [2] we introduced a new notion of Wilf equivalence of integer partitions and proved that rook equivalence implies Wilf equivalence. In the present paper we prove the converse and thereby establish a new criterion for rook equivalence. We also refine two of the standard criteria for rook equivalence and establish another new one involving what we call \emph{nested sequences of L's}.

For a hereditary permutation class $\mathcal{C}$, we say that two permutations $π$ and $σ$ of $\mathcal{C}$ are Wilf-equivalent in $\mathcal{C}$, if $\mathcal{C}$ has the same number of permutations avoiding $π$ as those avoiding $σ$. We say that a permutation class $\mathcal{C}$ exhibits a Wilf collapse if the number of permutations of size $n$ in $\mathcal{C}$ is asymptotically larger than the number of Wilf-equivalence classes formed by these permutations. In this paper, we show that Wilf collapse is a surprisingly common phenomenon. Among other results, we show that Wilf collapse occurs in…
We launch a systematic study of the refined Wilf-equivalences by the statistics $\mathsf{comp}$ and $\mathsf{iar}$, where $\mathsf{comp}(π)$ and $\mathsf{iar}(π)$ are the number of components and the length of the initial ascending run of a permutation $π$, respectively. As Comtet was the first one to consider the statistic $\mathsf{comp}$ in his book {\em Analyse combinatoire}, any statistic equidistributed with $\mathsf{comp}$ over a class of permutations is called by us a {\em Comtet statistic} over such class. This work is motivated by a triple equidistribution result of Rubey on $321$-avo…
Jelínek, Mansour, and Shattuck studied Wilf-equivalence among pairs of patterns of the form $\{σ,τ\}$ where $σ$ is a set partition of size $3$ with at least two blocks. They obtained an upper bound for the number of Wilf-equivalence classes for such pairs. We show that their upper bound is the exact number of equivalence classes, thus solving a problem posed by them.
Let $\mathcal{S}_n(π)$ (resp. $\mathcal{I}_n(π)$ and $\mathcal{AI}_n(π)$) denote the set of permutations (resp. involutions and alternating involutions) of length $n$ which avoid the permutation pattern $π$. For $k,m\geq 1$, Backelin-West-Xin proved that $|\mathcal{S}_n(12\cdots kτ)|= |\mathcal{S}_n(k\cdots 21τ)|$ by establishing a bijection between these two sets, where $τ= τ_1τ_2\cdots τ_m$ is an arbitrary permutation of $k+1,k+2,\ldots,k+m$. The result has been extended to involutions by Bousquet-Mélou and Steingrímsson and to alternating permutations by the first author. In this paper, we …
In this paper, we study the pattern occurrence in $k$-ary words. We prove an explicit upper bound on the number of $k$-ary words avoiding any given pattern using a random walk argument. Additionally, we reproduce several already known results and establish a simple connection among pattern occurrences in permutations and $k$-ary words. A simple consequence of this connection is that Wilf-equivalence of two patterns in words implies their Wilf-equivalence in permutations.
In this paper, we study the Wilf-type equivalence relations among multiset permutations. We identify all multiset equivalences among pairs of patterns consisting of a pattern of length three and another pattern of length at most four. To establish our results, we make use of a variety of techniques, including Ferrers-equivalence arguments, sorting by minimal/maximal letters, analysis of active sites and direct bijections. In several cases, our arguments may be extended to prove multiset equivalences for infinite families of pattern pairs. Our results apply equally well to the Wilf-type classif…
