X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) Fe K-edge spectra of the FeSex (x=1-0.8) single crystals cleaved in situ in vacuum reveal characteristic Fe 4sp states, a lattice distortion and the Se K-edge spectra point to a strong Fe 3d-Se 4p hybridization giving rise to itinerant charge carriers. A formal charge of ~1.8+ for Fe and ~2.2- for Se were evaluated from these spectra in the FeSex (x=0.88). The charge balance between Fe and Se is assigned itinerant electrons located in the Fe-Se hybridization bond. As x decreases the 4p hole count increases and a crystal structure distortion is observed that in turn causes the Fe separation in the ab plane change from 4p orbital to varying (modulating) coordination. Powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements also show a slight increase in lattice parameters as x decreases (increasing Se deficiency).
We present a formalism based on nonequilibrium dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) which allows to compute the time-resolved X-ray absorption spectrum (XAS) of photo-excited solids. By applying this formalism to the photo-doped half-filled and quarter-filled two-orbital Hubbard models in the Mott insulating regime we clarify how the time-resolved XAS signal reflects the nonequilibrium population of different local states. Apart from the missing broadening associated with continuum excitations, the atomic XAS spectrum computed with the nonthermal state populations provides a good approximation t…
We study the importance of inter-site coherences and quantum interference effects in the x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) of mixed-valent systems. We demonstrate its importance, first for a simple diatomic mixed-valent molecule to elucidate the physics involved, and finally for mixed-valent Ti oxides, using a model calculation including full spin and orbital multiplicities. Our calculations demonstrate the inefficacy of conventional approaches of describing the XAS from mixed-valent systems as incoherent combinations of XAS from the pure-valent end members, and that multiplets forbidden in …
The electronic structure of La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 (LCeMO) thin film has been investigated using photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The Ce 3d core-level PES and XAS spectra of LCeMO are very similar to those of CeO2, indicating that Ce ions are far from being trivalent. A very weak 4f resonance is observed around the Ce 4d $\to$ 4f absorption edge, suggesting that the localized Ce 4f states are almost empty in the ground state. The Mn 2p XAS spectrum reveals the existence of the Mn(2+) multiplet feature, confirming the Mn(2+)-Mn(3+) mixed-valent states of Mn ions…
We determined the crystal-field split Hund's rule ground state of the non-centrosymmetric heavy fermion superconductor CePt3Si with polarization dependent soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and polarized neutron scattering. We are also able to give the sequence of the crystal-field states from the temperature evolution of the linear dichroic signal in the XAS. The quantitative analysis of the XAS temperature dependence together with the neutron transition energies complete the identification of the crystal-field level scheme.
The electronic structure of LiNiO$_2$, a promising Li-ion battery cathode material, has remained a challenge to understand due to its highly covalent yet correlated nature. Here we elucidate the electronic structure in LiNiO$_2$ and the related compound NaNiO$_2$ using x-ray absorption spectra (XAS) and quantum many-body calculations. Notably, we use inverse partial fluorescence yield to correctly measure the Ni $L$-edge XAS, which is inaccurate using conventional methods. We show that the XAS are indicative of a strong Jahn-Teller effect in NaNiO$_2$ and a bond disproportionated state in LiNi…
We report a new theoretical method for X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in condensed matter which is based on the multi-channel multiple scattering theory of Natoli et al. and the eigen-channel R-matrix method. While the highly flexible real-space multiple scattering (RSMS) method guarantees a precise description of the single-electron part of the problem, multiplet-like electron correlation effects between the photo-electron and localized electrons can be taken account for in a configuration interaction scheme. For the case where correlation effects are limited to the absorber atom, a tech…
Studying the local moment and 5$f$-electron occupations sheds insight into the electronic behavior in actinide materials. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) has been a powerful tool to reveal the valence electronic structure when assisted with theoretical calculations. However, the analysis currently taken in the community on the branching ratio of the XAS spectra generally does not account for the hybridization effects between local $f$-orbitals and conduction states. In this paper, we discuss an approach which employs the DFT+Gutzwiller rotationally-invariant slave boson (DFT+GRISB) method …
We have investigated 3d electronic states of doped transition metals in II-VI diluted magnetic semiconductors, Zn1-xMxSe (M = Mn, Fe, Co) and Zn1-xMnxY (Y = Se, Te), using the transition-metal L2,3-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements. In order to explain the XAS spectra, we employed a tetragonal cluster model calculation, which includes not only the full ionic multiplet structure but also configuration interaction (CI). The results show that CI is essential to describe the experimental spectra adequately, indicating the strong hybridization between the transition metal 3d and…
The comprehensive study of the temperature dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) reveals a dynamical spectral weight $α$ in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ (YBCO). Large spectral weight changes for both the Upper Hubbard band and the Zhang-Rice band due to dynamics of holes are experimentally found in the underdoped regime. A large value of $α\geq 0.3$ is indispensable to describing XAS of YBCO with the conservation of states. The value of $α$ is linearly proportional to the pseudogap temperature in the underdoped regime, but becomes smaller as the doping level goes to the undoped limit. Our result…
V 3$d$ charge and orbital states in V$_2$OPO$_4$ have been investigated by means of x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The electronic structure of V$_2$OPO$_4$ is very unique in that the charge transfer between V$^{2+}$ and V$^{3+}$ in face sharing VO$_6$ chains provides negative thermal expansion as reported by Pachoud {\it et al.} [J. Am. Chem. Soc. {\bf 140}, 636 (2018).] The near edge region of O 1$s$ XAS exhibits the three features which can be assigned to transitions to O 2$p$ mixed into the unoccupied V 3$d$ $t_{2g}$ and $e_{g}$ orbitals of V$^{2+}$ and V$^{3+}$. The V 2$p$ XAS line s…
To investigate the x-ray absorption (XAS) branching ratio from the core 4d to valence 5f states, we set up a theoretical framework by using a combination of density functional theory in the local density approximation and Dynamical Mean Field Theory (LDA+DMFT), and apply it to several actinides. The results of the LDA+DMFT reduces to the band limit for itinerant systems and to the atomic limit for localized f electrons, meaning a spectrum of 5f itinerancy can be investigated. Our results provides a consistent and unified view of the XAS branching ratio for all elemental actinides, and is in go…
Resonant valence-band X-ray photoelectron spectra (ResPES) excited near 2p$_{3/2}$ core level energies, 2p X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) and L$_{3,2}$ X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) of Ti and Mn in single crystal of 1T-Mn$_2$TiSe$_2$ were studied for the first time. The ionic-covalent character of bonds formed by Mn atoms with the neighboring Se atoms in the octahedral coordination is established. From the XPS and XAS measurements compared with results of atomic multiplet calculations of Ti and Mn L$_{3,2}$ XAS it is found that Ti atoms are in ionic state of 4+ and Mn atoms are in the stat…
We report a combined study for the electronic structures of ferromagnetic CeAgSb$_2$ using soft X-ray absorption (XAS), magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), and angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) spectroscopies. The Ce $M_{4, 5}$ XAS spectra show very small satellite structures, reflecting a strongly localized character of the Ce $4f$ electrons. The linear dichroism effects in the Ce $M_{4, 5}$ XAS spectra demonstrate the ground state Ce $4f$ symmetry of $Γ{_6}$, the spatial distribution of which is directed along the $c$-axis. The XMCD results give support to the picture of local-moment magn…
We demonstrate a new method of x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) that is bulk sensitive, like traditional fluorescence yield measurements, but is not affected by self-absorption or saturation effects. This measure of XAS is achieved by scanning the incident photon energy through an absorption edge and using an energy sensitive photon detector to measure the partial fluorescence yield (PFY). The x-ray emission from any element or core-hole excitation that is not resonant with the absorption edge under investigation is selected from the PFY. It is found that the inverse of this PFY spectrum, w…
We have examined the local 3d electronic structures of Co-Au multinuclear complexes with the medicinal molecules D-penicillaminate (D-pen) [Co{Au(PPh3)(D-pen)}2]ClO4 and [Co3{Au3(tdme)(D-pen)3}2] by Co L_2,3-edge soft X-ray absorption (XAS) spectroscopy, where PPh3 denotes triphenylphosphine and tdme stands for 1,1,1-tris[(diphenylphosphino)methyl]ethane. The Co L_2,3-edge XAS spectra indicate the localized ionic 3d electronic states in both materials. The experimental spectra are well explained by spectral simulation for a localized Co ion under ligand fields with the full multiplet theory, w…
Linear polarized soft-x ray absorption (XAS) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments have been performed on CeMIn5 with M = Rh, Ir, and Co to determine the crystal-field scheme and characteristic Kondo temperatures T* for the hybridization between 4f and conduction electrons. The ground state wave functions are determined from the polarization dependent soft-XAS data at the cerium M4,5 edge and the crystal-field splittings from INS. The characteristic temperature T* has been determined from the line widths of the neutron scattering data. We find that the quasielastic line widths of …
We report on a Ni L$_{2,3}$ edges x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) study in $R$NiO$_3$ perovskites. These compounds exhibit a metal to insulator ($MI$) transition as temperature decreases. The L$_{3}$ edge presents a clear splitting in the insulating state, associated to a less hybridized ground state. Using charge transfer multiplet calculations, we establish the importance of the crystal field and 3d spin-orbit coupling to create a mixed-spin ground state. We explain the $MI$ transition in $R$NiO$_3$ perovskites in terms of modifications in the Ni$^{3+}$ crystal field splitting that induc…
The nature of the electronic groundstate of Ba2IrO4 has been addressed using soft X-ray absorption and inelastic scattering techniques in the vicinity of the oxygen K edge. From the polarization and angular dependence of XAS we deduce an approximately equal superposition of xy, yz and zx Ir4+ 5d orbitals. By combining the measured orbital occupancies, with the value of the spin-orbit coupling provided by RIXS, we estimate the crystal field splitting associated with the tetragonal distortion of the IrO6 octahedra to be small, Δ=50(50) meV. We thus conclude definitively that Ba2IrO4 is a close r…
Electronic structures of multiferroic RMnO$_3$ (R=Y, Er) have been investigated by employing photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). We have found that Mn ions in RMnO$_3$ are in the trivalent high-spin state with the total spin of S=2. The occupied Mn ($d_{xz} - d_{yz}$) states lie deep below $\rm E_F$, while the occupied Mn ($d_{xy} - d_{x^2 -y^2}$) states overlap very much with the O $2p$ states. It is observed that the PES spectral intensity of Mn 3d states is negligible above the occupied O $2p$ bands, suggesting that YMnO$_3$ is likely to be a charge-tra…
We have performed x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements on a series of Ir-based 5d transition metal compounds, including Ir, IrCl3, IrO2, Na2IrO3, Sr2IrO4, and Y2Ir2O7. By comparing the intensity of the "white-line" features observed at the Ir L2 and L3 absorption edges, it is possible to extract valuable information about the strength of the spin-orbit coupling in these systems. We observe remarkably large, non-statistical branching ratios in all Ir compounds studied, with little or no dependence on chemical composition, crystal structure, or electronic state. This result confirms …
We have studied the electronic structure of ferrimagnetic Mn2VAl single crystal by means of soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray absorption magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and resonant soft X-ray inelastic scattering (RIXS). We have successfully observed the XMCD signals for all constitute elements, supporting the spin polarized states at the Fermi level. The Mn $L_{2,3}$ XAS and XMCD spectra are reproduced by the spectral simulation based on density-functional theory (DFT), indicating itinerant character of the Mn 3d states. On the other hand, V $3d$ electrons are rather localiz…
An alternative measure of x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) called inverse partial fluorescence yield (IPFY) has recently been developed that is both bulk sensitive and free of saturation effects. Here we show that the angle dependence of IPFY can provide a measure directly proportional to the total x-ray absorption coefficient, $μ(E)$. In contrast, fluorescence yield (FY) and electron yield (EY) spectra are offset and/or distorted from $μ(E)$ by an unknown and difficult to measure amount. Moreover, our measurement can determine $μ(E)$ in absolute units with no free parameters by scaling to …
We have studied the electronic structure of epitaxially grown thin films of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$FeO$_3$ by {\it in-situ} photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements. The Fe 2$p$ and valence-band PES spectra and the O $1s$ XAS spectra of LaFeO$_3$ have been successfully reproduced by configuration-interaction cluster-model calculation and, except for the satellite structure, by band-structure calculation. From the shift of the binding energies of core levels, the chemical potential was found to be shifted downward as $x$ was increased. Among the three peaks …
Using a recently developed impurity solver we exemplify how dynamical mean field theory captures band excitations, resonances, edge singularities and excitons in core level x-ray absorption (XAS) and core level photo electron spectroscopy (cPES) on metals, correlated metals and Mott insulators. Comparing XAS at different values of the core-valence interaction shows how the quasiparticle peak in the absence of core-valence interactions evolves into a resonance of similar shape, but different origin. Whereas XAS is rather insensitive to the metal insulator transition, cPES can be used, due to no…
In order to shed light on the electronic structure of Na_xCoO_2, and motivated by recent Co L-edge X-ray absorption spectra (XAS) experiments with polarized light, we calculate the electronic spectrum of a CoO_6 cluster including all interactions between 3d orbitals. We obtain the ground state for two electronic occupations in the cluster that correspond nominally to all O in the O^{-2} oxidation state, and Co^{+3} or Co^{+4}. Then, all excited states obtained by promotion of a Co 2p electron to a 3d electron, and the corresponding matrix elements are calculated. A fit of the observed experime…
We study the mixed valence transition ($T$$_{v}$ $\sim$80 K) in EuNi$_{2}$(Si$_{0.2}$Ge$_{0.8}$)$_{2}$ using Eu 3$d-4f$ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RESPES). The Eu$^{2+}$ and Eu$^{3+}$ main peaks show a giant resonance and the spectral features match very well with atomic multiplet calculations. The spectra show dramatic temperature ($T$)-dependent changes over large energies ($\sim$10 eV) in RESPES and XAS. The observed non-integral mean valencies of $\sim$2.35 $\pm$ 0.03 ($T$ = 120 K) and $\sim$2.70 $\pm$ 0.03 ($T$ = 40 K) indicate homogeneous…
We present an equation of motion coupled cluster approach for calculating and understanding intrinsic inelastic losses in core level x-ray absorption spectra (XAS). The method is based on a factorization of the transition amplitude in the time-domain, which leads to a convolution of an effective one-body spectrum and the core-hole spectral function. The spectral function characterizes these losses in terms of shake-up excitations and satellites, and is calculated using a cumulant representation of the core-hole Green's function that includes non-linear corrections. The one-body spectrum also i…
X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) is a powerful experimental technique to probe the local order in materials with core electron excitations. Experimental interpretation requires supporting theoretical calculations. For water, these calculations are very demanding and, to date, could only be done with major approximations that limited the accuracy of the calculated spectra. This prompted an intense debate on whether a substantial revision of the standard picture of tetrahedrally bonded water was necessary to improve the agreement of theory and experiment. Here, we report a new first-principle…
X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and high resolution X-ray diffraction are combined to study the interplay between electronic and lattice structures in controlling the superconductivity in cuprates with a model charge-compensated CaxLa1-xBa1.75-xLa0.25+xCu3Oy (0<x<0.5, y=7.13) system. In spite of a large change in Tc, the doped holes, determined by the Cu L and O K XAS, hardly show any variation with the x. On the other hand, the CuO2 plaquette size shows a systematic change due to different size of substituted cations. The results provide a direct evidence for the chemical pressure being a…
We have performed Ce $L_3$-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements on CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$BiS$_2$, in which the superconductivity of the BiS$_2$ layer and the ferromagnetism of the CeO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ layer are induced by the F-doping, in order to investigate the impact of the F-doping on the local electronic and lattice structures. The Ce $L_3$-edge XAS spectrum of CeOBiS$_2$ exhibits coexistence of $4f^1$ (Ce$^{3+}$) and $4f^0$ (Ce$^{4+}$) state transitions revealing Ce mixed valency in this system. The spectral weight of the $4f^0$ state decreases with the F-doping and completely dis…
The electronic structure change of NiS$_{2-x}$Se$_x$ as a function of Se concentration $x$ has been studied by Ni $L$-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The XAS spectra show distinct features in Ni $L_3$ edge, indicating whether the system is insulating or metallic. These features can be semi-quantitatively explained within the framework of the configurational interaction cluster model (CICM). In the S-rich region, relatively large charge-transfer energy ($Δ\sim 5$ eV) from ligand $p$ to Ni 3$d$ states and a little small $p$-$d$ hybridization strength ($V_{pdσ} \sim 1.1$ eV) can reprodu…
The recent discovery of superconductivity in Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_2$ has drawn significant attention in the field. A key open question regards the evolution of the electronic structure with respect to hole doping. Here, we exploit x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to probe the doping dependent electronic structure of the NiO$_2$ planes. Upon doping, a higher energy feature in Ni $L_3$ edge XAS develops in addition to the main absorption peak. By comparing our data to atomic multiplet calculations including $D_{4h}$ crystal field, the doping in…
The electronic structure of In$_{2-x}$V$_x$O$_3$ ($x=0.08$) has been investigated using photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The V $2p$ core-level PES and XAS spectra revealed trivalent electronic state of the V ion, consistent with the substitution of the V ion for the In site. The V 3d partial density of states obtained by the resonant PES technique showed a sharp peak above the O $2p$ band. While the O $1s$ XAS spectrum of In$_{2-x}$V$_x$O$_3$ was similar to that of In$_2$O$_3$, there were differences in the In $3p$ and 3d XAS spectra between V-doped and…
We studied the resonant diffraction signal from stepped surfaces of SrTiO3 at the Ti 2p -> 3d (L2,3) resonance in comparison with x-ray absorption (XAS) and specular reflectivity data. The steps on the surface form an artificial superstructure suited as a model system for resonant soft x-ray diffraction. A small step density on the surface is sufficient to produce a well defined diffraction peak, showing the high sensitivity of the method. At larger incidence angles, the resonant diffraction spectrum from the steps on the surface resembles the spectrum for specular reflectivity. Both deviate f…
Motivated by the recent synthesis of Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+δ}$ (BCO), a high temperature superconducting cuprate with putative $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ ground state symmetry, we investigated its electronic structure by means of Cu $L_3$ x-ray absorption (XAS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Cu $L_3$ edge on a polycrystalline sample. We show that the XAS profile of BCO is characterised by two peaks associated to inequivalent Cu sites, and that its RIXS response features a single, sharp peak associated to crystal-field excitations. We argue that these observations are only partially compatib…
We study oxygen K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and investigate the validity of the Zhang-Rice singlet (ZRS) picture in overdoped cuprate superconductors. Using large-scale exact diagonalization of the three-orbital Hubbard model, we observe the effect of strong correlations manifesting in a dynamical spectral weight transfer from the upper Hubbard band to the ZRS band. The quantitative agreement between theory and experiment highlights an additional spectral weight reshuffling due to core-hole interaction. Our results confirm the important correlated nature of the cuprates and eluc…
Strongly correlated materials such as transition metal oxides (TMOs) often exhibit large satellites in their x-ray photoemission (XPS) and x-ray absorption spectra (XAS). These satellites arise from localized charge-transfer (CT) excitations that accompany the sudden creation of a core hole. Here we use a two-step approach to treat such excitations in a localized system embedded in a condensed system and coupled to a photoelectron. The total XAS is then given by a convolution of a spectral function representing the localized excitations and the XAS of the extended system. The local system is m…
GdNi is a ferrimagnetic material with a Curie temperature Tc = 69 K which exhibits a large magnetocaloric effect, making it useful for magnetic refrigerator applications. We investigate the electronic structure of GdNi by carrying out x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at T = 25 K in the ferrimagnetic phase. We analyze the Gd M$_{4,5}$-edge ($3d$ - $4f$) and Ni L$_{2,3}$-edge ($2p$ - $3d$) spectra using atomic multiplet and cluster model calculations, respectively. The atomic multiplet calculation for Gd M$_{4,5}$-edge XAS indicates that Gd is triv…
An easily accessible method is presented that permits to calculate spectra involving atomic multiplets relevant to X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) and Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) experiments. We present specific examples and compare the calculated spectra with available experimental data
The electronic structure of UC$_x$ (x=0.9, 1.0, 1.1, 2.0) was studied by means of x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the C $K$ edge and measurements in the high energy resolution fluorescence detection (HERFD) mode at the U $M_4$ and $L_3$ edges. The full-relativistic density functional theory calculations taking into account the $5f-5f$ Coulomb interaction $U$ and spin-orbit coupling (DFT+$U$+SOC) were also performed for UC and UC$_2$. While the U $L_3$ HERFD-XAS spectra of the studied samples reveal little difference, the U $M_4$ HERFD-XAS spectra show certain sensitivity to the varying …
We report on a X-ray absorption spectroscopic (XAS) study on a thin film of La0.7Ce0.3MnO3, a manganite which was previously only speculated to be an electron doped system. The measurements clearly show that the cerium is in the Ce(IV) valence state and that the manganese is present in a mixture of Mn2+ and Mn3+ valence states. These data unambiguously demonstrate that La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 is an electron doped colossal magnetoresistive manganite, a finding that may open up new opportunities both for device applications as well as for further basic research towards a better modelling of the colossal …
X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) as well as x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and magnetization of hybrid pyrochlore Eu2-xFexTi2O7 were investigated, where the rare earth Eu (4f) was replaced with transition metal Fe (3d) to introduce competing 4f-3d interactions. It is confirmed that the valence states of Eu and Fe ions are formally trivalent while that of Ti ions are tetravalent (3d0). The analysis yielded that the tetravalent Ti ions occupy octahedral sites with distorted Oh symmetry which is triggered by the presence of vacant 8a anionic site adjacent to TiO6 octahedra. Further s…
Using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), we studied the local structure in LaMnO3 under applied pressure across and well above the insulator to metal (IM) transition. A hysteretic behavior points to the coexistence of two phases within a large pressure range (7 to 25 GPa). The ambient phase with highly Jahn-Teller (JT) distorted MnO6 octahedra is progressively substituted by a new phase with less-distorted JT MnO6 units. The electronic delocalization leading to the IM transition is finger-printed from the pre-edge XAS structure around 30 GPa. We observed that the phase transition takes place…
We report on x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) studies of the paramagnetic (Mn,Co)-co-doped ZnO and ferromagnetic (Fe,Co)-co-doped ZnO nano-particles. Both the surface-sensitive total-electron-yield mode and the bulk-sensitive total-fluorescence-yield mode have been employed to extract the valence and spin states of the surface and inner core regions of the nano-particles. XAS spectra reveal that significant part of the doped Mn and Co atoms are found in the trivalent and tetravalent state in particular in the surface region while majority of Fe a…
The electronic properties of Co in bulk Na0.7CoO2 and the superconducting hydrated compound Na0.35CoO2 - y H2O have been investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) using hard x-rays. The XAS spectra at the Co K-edge were measured in both compounds with two different polarization directions. The changes in the XAS spectra upon hydration and their polarization dependence are well accounted for by linear muffin- tin orbital calculations in the local density approximation. The underlying electronic structure indicates the strong hybridization…
The valence and spin state evolution of Mn and Co on TbMn$_{\rm 1-x}$Co$_{\rm x}$O$_3$ series is precisely determined by means of soft and hard x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and K$β$ x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES). Our results show the change from Mn$^{3+}$ to Mn$^{4+}$ both high-spin (HS) together with the evolution from Co$^{2+}$ HS to Co$^{3+}$ low-spin (LS) with increasing $\rm x$. In addition, high energy resolution XAS spectra on the K pre-edge region are interpreted in terms of the strong charge transfer and hybridization effects along the series. These results correlate well w…
We report an experimental study of \nco, a Mott insulator containing chains of edge-sharing CuO$_4$ plaquettes, by polarized x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), resonant magnetic x-ray scattering (RMXS), magnetic susceptibility, and pyroelectric current measurements. The XAS data show that the valence holes reside exclusively on the Cu$^{2+}$ sites within the copper-oxide spin chains and populate a $d$-orbital polarized within the CuO$_4$ plaquettes. The RMXS measurements confirm the presence of incommensurate magnetic order below a Néel temperature of $T_N = 11.5$ K, which was previously inf…
Motivated by recent core-level x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments for the newly-discovered superconducting infinite-layer nickelate, we investigate the core-level spectra of the parent compounds NdNiO$_2$ and LaNiO$_2$ using the combination of local density approximation and dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT). Adjusting a charge-transfer energy to match the experimental spectra, we determine the optimal model parameters and discuss the nature of the NdNiO$_2$ ground state. We find that self-…
Perovskite-type BiNiO$_3$ is an insulating antiferromagnet in which a charge disproportionation occurs at the Bi site. La substitution for Bi suppresses the charge disproportionation and makes the system metallic. We have measured the photoemission and x-ray absorption (XAS) spectra of Bi$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$NiO$_{3}$ to investigate how the electronic structure changes with La doping. From Ni $2p$ XAS, we observed an increase of the valence of Ni from 2+ toward 3+. Combined with the core-level photoemission study, it was found that the average valence of Bi remains $\sim 4+$ and that the Ni valence…
We present bulk-sensitive hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (HAXPES) data of the Ce3d core levels and lifetime-reduced L edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in the partial fluorescence yield (PFY) mode of the CeMIn5 family with M = Co, Rh, and Ir. The HAXPES data are analyzed quantitatively with a combination of full multiplet and configuration interaction model which allows correcting for the strong plasmons in the CeMIn5 HAXPES data, and reliable weights wn of the different fn contributions in the ground state are determined. The CeMIn5 results are compared to HAXPES data of other h…
We report room-temperature ferromagnetism in highly conducting transparent anatase Ti1-xTaxO2 (x~0.05) thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition on LaAlO3 substrates. Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), x-ray diffraction (XRD), proton induced x-ray emission (PIXE), x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) indicated negligible magnetic contaminants in the films. The presence of ferromagnetism with concomitant large carrier densities was determined by a combination of superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetom…
Sr2IrO4 was predicted to be an unconventional superconductor upon carrier doping since it highly resembles the high-temperature cuprates. Here, to understand carrier doping effect on spin-orbit coupled Mott insulator Sr2IrO4, the electronic structure and local structure distortion for Sr2-xLaxIrO4 system have been investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). By comparing the intensity of white-line features at the Ir L2,3 absorption edges, we observe remarkably large branching ratios in La-doped compounds, greater than that of the parent material Sr2IrO4, suggesting a strong spin-orbit…
X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), optical reflectance spectroscopy, and the Hall effect measurements were used to investigate the electronic structure in La_0.7Ce_0.3MnO_3 thin films (LCeMO). The XAS results are consistent with those obtained from LDA+U calculations. In that the doping of Ce has shifted up the Fermi level and resulted in marked shrinkage of hole pockets originally existing in La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3 (LCaMO). The Hall measurements indicate that in LCeMO the carriers are still displaying the characteristics of holes as LDA+U calculations predict. Analyses of the optical reflectance…
The recent discovery of spin-triplet superconductivity emerging from a non-magnetic parent state in UTe$_2$ has stimulated great interest in the underlying mechanism of Cooper pairing. Experimental characterization of short-range electronic and magnetic correlations is vital to understanding these phenomena. Here we use resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and atomic multiplet-based modeling to shed light on the active debate between 5$f^2$6$d^1$-based models with singlet crystal field states versus 5$f^3$-based models that predict atomic Kramers dou…
Xclaim (x-ray core level atomic multiplets) is a graphical interface for the calculation of core-hole spectroscopy and ground state properties within a charge-transfer multiplet model taking into account a many-body hamiltonian with Coulomb, spin-orbit, crystal-field, and hybridization interactions. Using Hartree-Fock estimates for the Coulomb and spin-orbit interactions and ligand field parameters (crystal-field, hybridization and charge-transfer energy) the program can calculate x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), photoemission spectrospcy (PES) and i…
The perovksite rare-earth nickelates, RNiO$_3$ (R=La ... Lu), are a class of materials displaying a rich phase-diagram of metallic and insulating phases associated with charge and magnetic order. Being in the charge transfer regime, Ni$^{3+}$ in octahedral coordination displays a strong hybridization with oxygen to form $3d$ - $2p$ mixed states, which results in a strong admixture of $3d^8\underline{L}$ into $3d^7$, where $\underline{L}$ denotes a hole on the oxygen. To understand the nature of this strongly hybridized ground state, we present a detailed study of the Ni and O electronic struct…
