V 3$d$ charge and orbital states in V$_2$OPO$_4$ have been investigated by means of x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The electronic structure of V$_2$OPO$_4$ is very unique in that the charge transfer between V$^{2+}$ and V$^{3+}$ in face sharing VO$_6$ chains provides negative thermal expansion as reported by Pachoud {\it et al.} [J. Am. Chem. Soc. {\bf 140}, 636 (2018).] The near edge region of O 1$s$ XAS exhibits the three features which can be assigned to transitions to O 2$p$ mixed into the unoccupied V 3$d$ $t_{2g}$ and $e_{g}$ orbitals of V$^{2+}$ and V$^{3+}$. The V 2$p$ XAS line shape can be reproduced by multiplet calculations for a mixed valence state with V$^{2+}$ and V$^{3+}$. The polarization dependence of the O 1$s$ and V 2$p$ XAS spectra indicates V 3$d$ orbital order in which $xy$ and $yz$ (or $zx$) orbitals are occupied at the V$^{3+}$ site in the face sharing chains. The occupied $xy$ orbital is essential for the antiferromagnetic coupling between the V$^{2+}$ and V$^{3+}$ sites along the chains while the occupied $yz$ (or $zx$) orbital provides the antiferromagnetic coupling between the V$^{2+}$ and V$^{3+}$ sites between the chains.
Electronic properties of V$_2$OPO$_4$ have been investigated by means of hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) and subsequent theoretical calculations. The V 1$s$ and 2$p$ HAXPES spectra are consistent with the charge ordering of V$^{2+}$ and V$^{3+}$. The binding energy difference between the V$^{2+}$ and V$^{3+}$ components is unexpectedly large indicating large bonding-antibonding splitting between them in the final states of core level photoemission. The V 1$s$ HAXPES spectrum exhibits a charge transfer satellite which can be analyzed by configuration interaction calculations on a…
Polarization dependent vanadium L edge X-ray absorption spectra of BaVS$_3$ single crystals are measured in the four phases of the compound. The difference between signals with the polarization \textbf{E}$\perp$\textbf{c} and \textbf{E}$\parallel$\textbf{c} (linear dichroism) changes with temperature. Besides increasing intensity of one of the maxima, a new structure appears in the pre-edge region below the metal-insulator transition. More careful examination brings to light that the changes start already with pretransitional charge density wave fluctuations. Simple symmetry analysis suggests …
Sr2IrO4 was predicted to be an unconventional superconductor upon carrier doping since it highly resembles the high-temperature cuprates. Here, to understand carrier doping effect on spin-orbit coupled Mott insulator Sr2IrO4, the electronic structure and local structure distortion for Sr2-xLaxIrO4 system have been investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). By comparing the intensity of white-line features at the Ir L2,3 absorption edges, we observe remarkably large branching ratios in La-doped compounds, greater than that of the parent material Sr2IrO4, suggesting a strong spin-orbit…
We have performed x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements on a series of Ir-based 5d transition metal compounds, including Ir, IrCl3, IrO2, Na2IrO3, Sr2IrO4, and Y2Ir2O7. By comparing the intensity of the "white-line" features observed at the Ir L2 and L3 absorption edges, it is possible to extract valuable information about the strength of the spin-orbit coupling in these systems. We observe remarkably large, non-statistical branching ratios in all Ir compounds studied, with little or no dependence on chemical composition, crystal structure, or electronic state. This result confirms …
The electronic structure change of NiS$_{2-x}$Se$_x$ as a function of Se concentration $x$ has been studied by Ni $L$-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The XAS spectra show distinct features in Ni $L_3$ edge, indicating whether the system is insulating or metallic. These features can be semi-quantitatively explained within the framework of the configurational interaction cluster model (CICM). In the S-rich region, relatively large charge-transfer energy ($Δ\sim 5$ eV) from ligand $p$ to Ni 3$d$ states and a little small $p$-$d$ hybridization strength ($V_{pdσ} \sim 1.1$ eV) can reprodu…
The orbital symmetries of electron doped iron-arsenide superconductors Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 have been measured with x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The data reveal signatures of Fe d electron itinerancy, weak electronic correlations, and a high degree of Fe-As hybridization related to the bonding topology of the Fe dxz+yz states, which are found to contribute substantially at the Fermi level. The energies and detailed orbital character of Fe and As derived unoccupied s and d states are found to be in remarkably good agreement with the predictions of standard density functional theory.
The comprehensive study of the temperature dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) reveals a dynamical spectral weight $α$ in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ (YBCO). Large spectral weight changes for both the Upper Hubbard band and the Zhang-Rice band due to dynamics of holes are experimentally found in the underdoped regime. A large value of $α\geq 0.3$ is indispensable to describing XAS of YBCO with the conservation of states. The value of $α$ is linearly proportional to the pseudogap temperature in the underdoped regime, but becomes smaller as the doping level goes to the undoped limit. Our result…
We have studied the electronic structure of ferrimagnetic Mn2VAl single crystal by means of soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray absorption magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and resonant soft X-ray inelastic scattering (RIXS). We have successfully observed the XMCD signals for all constitute elements, supporting the spin polarized states at the Fermi level. The Mn $L_{2,3}$ XAS and XMCD spectra are reproduced by the spectral simulation based on density-functional theory (DFT), indicating itinerant character of the Mn 3d states. On the other hand, V $3d$ electrons are rather localiz…
The optical properties of magnetite at room temperature were studied by infrared reflectivity measurements as a function of pressure up to 8 GPa. The optical conductivity spectrum consists of a Drude term, two sharp phonon modes, a far-infrared band at around 600 cm$^{-1}$, and a pronounced mid-infrared absorption band. With increasing pressure both absorption bands shift to lower frequencies and the phonon modes harden in a linear fashion. Based on the shape of the MIR band, the temperature dependence of the dc transport data, and the occurrence of the far-infrared band in the optical conduct…
The short-range organization around Ni atoms in orthorhombic $R$NiO$_{3}$ ($R$=Pr,Nd,Eu) perovskites has been studied over a wide temperature range by Ni K-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy. Our results demonstrate that two different Ni sites, with different average Ni-O bond lengths, coexist in those orthorhombic compounds and that important modifications in the Ni nearest neighbors environment take place across the metal-insulator transition. We report evidences for the existence of short-range charge-order in the insulating state, as found in the monoclinic compounds. Moreover, our results…
We have examined the local 3d electronic structures of Co-Au multinuclear complexes with the medicinal molecules D-penicillaminate (D-pen) [Co{Au(PPh3)(D-pen)}2]ClO4 and [Co3{Au3(tdme)(D-pen)3}2] by Co L_2,3-edge soft X-ray absorption (XAS) spectroscopy, where PPh3 denotes triphenylphosphine and tdme stands for 1,1,1-tris[(diphenylphosphino)methyl]ethane. The Co L_2,3-edge XAS spectra indicate the localized ionic 3d electronic states in both materials. The experimental spectra are well explained by spectral simulation for a localized Co ion under ligand fields with the full multiplet theory, w…
The saga of the primary photoexcitations in $π$-conjugated polymers has been a source of extraordinary scientific curiosity that has lasted for more than three decades. From soliton excitations in trans-polyacetylene, to singlet and triplet excitons and polarons in other polymers, to charge transfer excitons in blends of polymers and fullerenes, the field has been rich with a variety of different photoexcitation species. Here we show the photogeneration of a novel primary intrachain photoexcitation species, namely the composite multi-exciton (CME) in $π$-conjugated donor-acceptor (DA)-copolyme…
We report on the electrodynamics of a Heusler alloy Fe2TiSn probed over four decades in energy: from the far infrared to the ultraviolet. Our results do not support the suggestion of Kondo-lattice behavior inferred from specific heat measurements. Instead, we find a conventional Drude-like response of free carriers, with two additional absorption bands centered at around 0.1 and 0.87 eV. The latter feature can be interpreted as excitations across a pseudogap, in accord with band structure calculations.
We employ Faraday and Kerr effect spectroscopy in the infrared range to investigate the electronic structure of Ga1-xMnxAs near the Fermi energy. The band structure of this archetypical dilute-moment ferromagnetic semiconductor has been a matter of controversy, fueled partly by previous measurements of the unpolarized infrared absorption and their phenomenological impurity-band interpretation. The infrared magneto-optical effects we study arise directly from the spin-splitting of the carrier bands and their chiral asymmetry due to spin-orbit coupling. Unlike the unpolarized absorption, they ar…
We observe the excitation of collective modes in the THz range driven by the recently discovered Néel spin-orbit torques (NSOT) in the metallic antiferromagnet Mn$_{2}$Au. Temperature dependent THz spectroscopy reveals a strong absorption mode centered near 1 THz, which upon heating from 4 K to 450 K softens and looses intensity. Comparison with the estimated eigenmode frequencies implies that the observed mode is an in-plane antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR) mode. The AFMR absorption strength exceeds those found in antiferromagnetic insulators, driven by the magnetic field of the THz radiati…
Distinguishing Electronic Band Structure of Single-layer and Bilayer Ruddlesden-Popper Nickelates Probed by in-situ High Pressure X-ray Absorption Near-edge Spectroscopy
Non-resonant inelastic x ray scattering (NIXS) experiments have been performed to probe the 5d-5f electronic transitions at the uranium O(4,5) absorption edges in uranium dioxide. For small values of the scattering vector q, the spectra are dominated by dipole-allowed transitions encapsulated within the giant resonance, whereas for higher values of q the multipolar transitions of rank 3 and 5 give rise to strong and well-defined multiplet structure in the pre-edge region. The origin of the observed non-dipole multiplet structures is explained on the basis of many-electron atomic spectral calcu…
We report on a Ni L$_{2,3}$ edges x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) study in $R$NiO$_3$ perovskites. These compounds exhibit a metal to insulator ($MI$) transition as temperature decreases. The L$_{3}$ edge presents a clear splitting in the insulating state, associated to a less hybridized ground state. Using charge transfer multiplet calculations, we establish the importance of the crystal field and 3d spin-orbit coupling to create a mixed-spin ground state. We explain the $MI$ transition in $R$NiO$_3$ perovskites in terms of modifications in the Ni$^{3+}$ crystal field splitting that induc…
Magnetic complex-oxide heterostructures are of keen interest because a wealth of phenomena at the interface of dissimilar materials can give rise to fundamentally new physics and potentially valuable functionalities. Altered magnetization, novel magnetic coupling and emergent interfacial magnetism at the epitaxial layered-oxide interfaces are under intensive investigation, which shapes our understanding on how to utilize those materials, particularly for spintronics. Neutron and x-ray based techniques have played a decisive role in characterizing interfacial magnetic structures and clarifying …
Induction of holes not only in the superconductive CuO2 plane but also in the Bi2O2+d charge reservoir of the Bi2Sr2(Y1-xCax)Cu2O8+d superconductor upon CaII-for-YIII substitution is evidenced by means of two independent techniques, i.e., high-resolution x-ray-absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy measurements and coulometric redox titrations. The absolute values derived for the CuO2-plane hole concentration from the Cu L2,3-edge XANES spectra are in good agreement with those obtained from the coulometric redox analysis. The CuO2-plane hole concentration is found to increase from…
The polarization dependence of the near edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XANES) is an element specific probe to the real-space distribution of the density of unoccupied states in solid-state materials. In this paper, we present Fe and As $K$-edge experiments of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$$M_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($M=$ Mn, Co and $x=0.0$ and $0.08$). The experiments reveal a strong polarization dependence of the probed XANES spectra, which concerns mainly an increase of the intensity of electronic transitions when the beam polarization is set out of the sample's $ab$ crystallographic plane. The results show…
