Non-resonant inelastic x ray scattering (NIXS) experiments have been performed to probe the 5d-5f electronic transitions at the uranium O(4,5) absorption edges in uranium dioxide. For small values of the scattering vector q, the spectra are dominated by dipole-allowed transitions encapsulated within the giant resonance, whereas for higher values of q the multipolar transitions of rank 3 and 5 give rise to strong and well-defined multiplet structure in the pre-edge region. The origin of the observed non-dipole multiplet structures is explained on the basis of many-electron atomic spectral calculations. The results obtained demonstrate the high potential of NIXS as a bulk-sensitive technique for the characterization of the electronic properties of actinide materials.
We report an implementation of the constrained random phase approximation (cRPA) method within the projector augmented-wave framework. It allows for the calculation of the screened interaction in the same Wannier orbitals as our recent DFT+U and DFT+DMFT implementations. We present calculations of the dynamical Coulomb screened interaction in uranium dioxide and alpha and gamma cerium on Wannier functions. We show that a self-consistent calculation of the static screened interaction in DFT+U together with a consistent Wannier basis is mandatory for gamma cerium and uranium dioxide. We emphasiz…
We report the results of inelastic neutron scattering experiments performed with triple-axis spectrometers to investigate the low-temperature collective dynamics in the ordered phase of uranium dioxide. The results are in excellent agreement with the predictions of mean-field RPA calculations emphasizing the importance of multipolar superexchange interactions. By comparing neutron scattering intensities in different polarization channels and at equivalent points in different Brillouin zones, we show the mixed magneto-vibrational-quadrupolar character of the observed excitations. The high energ…
Formation Gibbs free energy of point defects and oxygen clusters in uranium dioxide at high-pressure high-temperature conditions are calculated from first principles, using the LSDA+U approach for the electronic structure and the Debye model for the lattice vibrations. The phonon contribution on Frenkel pairs is found to be notable, whereas it is negligible for the Schottky defect. Hydrostatic compression changes the formation energies drastically, making defect concentrations depend more sensitively on pressure. Calculations show that, if no oxygen clusters are considered, uranium vacancy bec…
In this work, the thermal transport properties of thorium dioxide (ThO$_2$, thoria) with low levels of substitutional uranium (U) doping are explored. We observe strong indications of resonant phonon scattering, an interaction between phonons and electronic degrees of freedom, induced by this doping in addition to common ``impurity'' scattering due to mass and interatomic force constant differences. Uranium doping levels of 6\%, 9\%, and 16\% were studied in a single hydrothermally synthesized U-doped thoria crystal with spatially-varying U doping levels. Within this crystal, isoconcentration …
We have investigated the grain boundary scattering effect on the thermal transport behavior of uranium dioxide (UO$_2$). The polycrystalline samples having different grain-sizes (0.125, 1.8, and 7.2 $μ$m) have been prepared by spark plasma sintering technique and characterized by x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Raman spectroscopy. The thermal transport properties (the thermal conductivity and thermoelectric power) have been measured in the temperature range 2-300~K and the results were analyzed in terms of various physical parameters contributing to the …
The structural behavior of UO2 under high pressure up to 300GPa has been studied by first-principles calculations with LSDA+U approximation. The results show that a pressure-induced structural transition to the cotunnite-type (orthorhombic Pnma) phase occurs at 38GPa. It agrees well with the experimentally observed ~42 GPa. An isostructural transition following that is also predicted to take place from 80 to 130GPa, which has not yet been observed in experiments. Further high compression beyond 226GPa will result in a metallic and paramagnetic transition. It corresponds to a volume of 90A^3 pe…
A comprehensive investigation on point defects and their clustering behavior in nonstoichiometric uranium dioxide UO2+x is carried out using LSDA+U method based on density functional theory. Accurate energetic information and charge transfers available so far are obtained. With these energies that have improved more than 50% over that of pure GGA and LDA, we show the density functional theory predicts the predominance of oxygen defects over uranium ones at any compositions, which is possible only after treated the localized 5f electrons properly. Calculations also suggest an upper bound of x~0…
Self-defect clusters in bulk matrix might affect the thermodynamic behavior of fission gases in nuclear fuel such as uranium dioxide. With first-principles LSDA+U calculations and taking xenon as a prototype, we find that the influence of oxygen defect clusters on the thermodynamics of gas atoms is prominent, which increases the solution energy of xenon by a magnitude of 0.5 eV, about 43% of the energy difference between the two lowest lying states at 700 K. Calculation also reveals a thermodynamic competition between the uranium vacancy and tri-vacancy sites to incorporate xenon in hyper-stoi…
Uranium dioxide (UO$_2$) remains a formidable challenge for first-principles approaches, due to the complex interplay among spin-orbit coupling, Mott physics, magnetic ordering, and crystal distortions. Here we use DFT+$U$ to explore UO$_2$ at zero temperature, incorporating all the aforementioned phenomena. The technical challenge is to navigate the many metastable electronic states produced by DFT+$U$, which is acomplished using $f$-orbital occupation matrix control to search for the ground state. We restrict our search to the high-symmetry ferromagnetic phase, including spin-orbit coupling,…
By evaluating multipole susceptibility of a seven-orbital impurity Anderson model with the use of a numerical renormalization group method, we discuss possible multipole states of actinide dioxides at low temperatures. In particular, here we point out a possible scenario for multipole ordering in americium dioxide. For Am$^{4+}$ ion with five $5f$ electrons, it is considered that the ground state is $Γ_7^{-}$ doublet and the first excited state is $Γ_8^{-}$ quartet, but we remark that the $f^5$ ground state is easily converted due to the competition between spin-orbit coupling and Coulomb inte…
We present a study of the structural phase transition, mechanical and thermodynamic properties of UO$_{2}$ by means of the local density approximation (LDA)$+U$ approach. A phase transition pressure of 40 GPa, which agrees well with the experimental value of 42 GPa, is obtained from theory at 0 K. Pressure-induced enhancements of elastic constants, elastic moduli, elastic wave velosities, and Debye temperature of the fluorite phase are observed. Phonon spectrums of both the ground state fluorite structure and high pressure cotunnite structure calculated by the supercell approach show that the …
We provide a first-principle, materials-specific theory of multipolar order and superexchange in NpO$_2$ by means of a non-collinear local-density approximation +$U$ (LDA+$U$) method. Our calculations offer a precise microscopic description of the triple-$q$-antiferro ordered phase in the absence of any dipolar moment. We find that, while the most common non-dipolar degrees of freedom (e.g., electric quadrupoles and magnetic octupoles) are active in the ordered phase, both the usually neglected higher-order multipoles (electric hexadecapoles and magnetic triakontadipoles) have at least an equa…
The electronic ground states of the actinide dioxides AnO2 (with An=U, Np, Pu, Am, and Cm) are investigated employing first-principles calculations within the framework of the local density approximation +U (LDA+U) approach, implemented in a full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave scheme. A systematic analysis of the An-5f states is performed which provides intuitive connections between the electronic structures and the local crystalline fields of the f states in the AnO2 series. Particularly the mechanisms leading to the experimentally observed insulating ground states are investigated…
We report direct experimental evidence for long-range antiferro ordering of the electric-quadrupole moments on the U ions. Resonant x-ray scattering experiments at the uranium $M_{4}$ absorption edge show a characteristic dependence in the integrated intensity upon rotation of the crystal around the scattering vector. Although quadrupolar order in uranium dioxide was advocated already in the 1960s no experimental evidence for this phenomenon was provided until now. We conclude with a possible model to explain the phase diagram of the solid solutions of UO$_{2}$ and NpO$_{2}$. We suggest that i…
We discuss possible approaches to the problem of the URu2Si2 "Hidden Order" (HO) which remains unsolved after tremendous efforts of researches. Suppose there is no spatial symmetry breaking at the HO transition temperature and solely the time-reversal symmetry breaking emerges owing to some sort of magnetic order. As a result of its 4/mmm symmetry, each uranium atom is a three-dimensional magnetic vortex; its intra-atomic magnetization M(r) is intrinsically non-collinear, so that its dipole, quadrupole and toroidal moments vanish, thus making the vortex "hidden". The first non-zero magnetic mu…
We study the electronic structure of cubic phase uranium dioxide at different volumes using a combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory. The \emph{ab initio} calculations predict an orbital-selective Mott insulator-metal transition at a moderate pressure of $\approx 45$ GPa. At this pressure the $j=5/2$ states become metallic, while the $j=7/2$ states remain insulating up to about 60 GPa. In the metallic state, we observe a rapid decrease of the 5$f$ occupation and total angular momentum with pressure. Simultaneously, the generalized Zhang-Rice state, which is of…
Nonresonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NIXS) has been performed on single crystals of UO$_2$ to study the direction dependence of higher-order-multipole scattering from the uranium $O_{4,5}$ edges (90--110 eV). By comparing the experimental results with theoretical calculations the symmetry of the ground state is confirmed directly as the crystal-field (CF) $Γ_5$ triplet state within the $J$ = 4 manifold. The results also demonstrate that the directional dichroism of the NIXS spectra is sensitive to the CF strength and establish NIXS as a tool for probing CF interactions quantitatively.
