We demonstrate a new method of x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) that is bulk sensitive, like traditional fluorescence yield measurements, but is not affected by self-absorption or saturation effects. This measure of XAS is achieved by scanning the incident photon energy through an absorption edge and using an energy sensitive photon detector to measure the partial fluorescence yield (PFY). The x-ray emission from any element or core-hole excitation that is not resonant with the absorption edge under investigation is selected from the PFY. It is found that the inverse of this PFY spectrum, which we term inverse partial fluorescence yield (IPFY), is linearly proportional to the x-ray absorption cross-section without any corrections due to saturation or self-absorption effects. We demonstrate this technique on the Cu L and Nd M absorption edges of the high-Tc cuprate LNSCO by measuring the O K PFY and comparing the total electron yield, total fluorescence yield and IPFY spectra.
We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the electronic structure of the intermetallic compound TiGePt by means of photoelectron spectroscopy, x-ray absorption spectroscopy and fullpotential band structure calculations. It was recently shown that TiGePt undergoes a structural phase transition by heating which is accompanied by a large volume contraction and a drastic change of physical properties, in particular a large decrease of the electrical resistivity. The present study revealed substantial differences in the electronic structure for the two TiGePt modifications, altho…
In recent years, ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy has provided insightful information about nonequilibrium dynamics of excitations in materials. In a typical experiment of time-resolved x-ray absorption spectroscopy, the systems are excited by a femtosecond laser pulse (pump pulse) followed by an x-ray (probe pulse) after a time delay to measure the absorption spectra of the photoexcited systems. We present a theory for nonequilibrium x-ray absorption spectroscopy in one-dimensional strongly correlated systems. The core hole created by x-ray is modeled as an additional effective potential of …
X-ray absorption spectroscopy was used to study the microscopic origin of conductance and resistive switching in chromium doped strontium titanate (Cr:SrTiO3). Differences in the x-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy (XANES) at the Cr K-edge indicate that the valence of Cr changes from 3+ to 4+ underneath the anode of our sample device after the application of an electric field. Spatially resolved x-ray fluorescence microscopy ($μ$-XRF) maps show that the Cr4+ region retracts from the anode-Cr:SrTiO3 interface after a conducting state has been achieved. This interface region is studied with …
The temperature dependence of the O K-edge pre-edge structure in the x-ray absorption spectra of the perovskites La(1-x)A(x)MnO(3), (A = Ca, Sr; x = 0.3, 0.4) reveals a correlation between the disappearance of the splitting in the pre-edge region and the presence of Jahn-Teller distortions. The different magnitudes of the distortions for different compounds is proposed to explain some dissimilarity in the line shape of the spectra taken above the Curie temperature.
The photoinduced valence dynamics of EuNi$_2$(Si$_{0.21}$Ge$_{0.79}$)$_2$ are investigated using time-resolved X-ray absorption spectroscopy for Eu $M_5$-edge. Through the pump-probe technique with synchrotron X-ray and Ti:sapphire laser pulse, a photoinduced valence transition is observed from Eu$^{3+}$ to Eu$^{2+}$. Because the lifetime of a photoinduced state can be up to 3 ns, a metastable state is considered to be realized. By comparing the experimental results with the theoretical calculations, the photoinduced valence transition between Eu 4$f$ and conduction electrons is quantitatively…
Recent studies suggest that an exemplary Kondo insulator SmB6 belongs to a new class of topological insulators (TIs), in which non-trivial spin-polarized metallic states emerge on surface upon the formation of Kondo hybridization gap in the bulk. Remarkably, the bulk resistivity reaches more than 20 Ohm cm at 4 K, making SmB6 a candidate for a so-called bulk-insulating TI. We here investigate optical-pulse responses of SmB6 by pump-and-probe photoemission spectroscopy. Surface photovoltage effect is observed below ~90 K. This indicates that an optically-active band bending region develops bene…
We present an x-ray absorption study of the oxidation states of transition-metal-ions of LiMnO2 and its related materials, widely used as cathodes in Li-ion batteries. The comparison between the obtained spectrum and the configuration-interaction cluster-model calculations showed that the Mn3+ in LiMnO2 is a mixture of the high-spin and low-spin states. We found that Li deficiencies occur in the case of Cr substitution, whereas there are no Li deficiencies in the case of Ni substitution. We conclude that the substitution of charge-transfer-type Ni or Cu is effective for LiMnO2 battery material…
We present an x-ray absorption study of the dependence of the V oxidation state on the thickness of LaVO$_3$ (LVO) and capping LaAlO$_3$ (LAO) layers in the multilayer structure of LVO sandwiched between LAO. We found that the change of the valence of V as a function of LAO layer thickness can be qualitatively explained by a transition between electronically reconstructed interfaces and a chemical reconstruction. The change as a function of LVO layer thickness is complicated by the presence of a considerable amount of V$^{4+}$ in the bulk of the thicker LVO layers.
Electronic structure and chemical bonding in TiX2 (X=S, Se, Te), TMxTiSe2 (TM=Cr, Mn, Cu) and CrxTi1-xSe2 were studied by x-ray resonance photoemission and absorption spectroscopy. These methods are detected to be strong sensitive to chemical bonding. Charge transfer from the intercalated atoms to Ti 3d band is detected. Narrow Ti 3d and Cu 3d bands are observed under Fermi level in CuxTiSe2.
We present nonlinear optical absorption properties of pulsed laser deposited thin films of topological insulator (TI), Bi2Se3 on quartz substrate, using open aperture Z - scan technique. The saturable intensity of as-deposited thin films has been found remarkably improved by an order of magnitude compared to the values reported earlier in the literature. Past results from the literature are inconclusive in establishing whether the saturable absorption is coming from surface states or the bulk. Specifically designed experiments with magnetically doped TI samples allow us to attribute the satura…
We demonstrate that a dynamical modification of the Hubbard U in the model charge-transfer insulator NiO can be observed with state-of-the-art time-resolved absorption spectroscopy. Using a self-consistent time-dependent density functional theory plus U computational framework, we show that the dynamical modulation of screening and Hubbard U significantly changes the transient optical spectroscopy. Whereas we find the well-known dynamical Franz-Keldysh effect when the U is frozen, we observe a dynamical band-gap renormalization for dynamical U. The renormalization of the optical gap is found t…
Measurements of polarization and temperature dependent soft x-ray absorption have been performed on Na_xCoO_2 single crystals with x=0.4 and x=0.6. They show a deviation of the local trigonal symmetry of the CoO_6 octahedra, which is temperature independent in a temperature range between 25 K and 372 K. This deviation was found to be different for Co^{3+} and Co^{4+} sites. With the help of a cluster calculation we are able to interpret the Co L_{23}-edge absorption spectrum and find a doping dependent energy splitting between the t_{2g} and the e_g levels (10Dq) in Na_xCoO_2.
We infer that soft-x-ray absorption spectroscopy is a versatile method for the determination of the crystal-field ground state symmetry of rare earth Heavy Fermion systems, complementing neutron scattering. Using realistic and universal parameters, we provide a theoretical mapping between the polarization dependence of Ce $M_{4,5}$ spectra and the charge distribution of the Ce $4f$ states. The experimental resolution can be orders of magnitude larger than the $4f$ crystal field splitting itself. To demonstrate the experimental feasibility of the method, we investigated CePd$_2$Si$_2$, thereby …
The electronic structure of La0.7Ce0.3MnO3 (LCeMO) thin film has been investigated using photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The Ce 3d core-level PES and XAS spectra of LCeMO are very similar to those of CeO2, indicating that Ce ions are far from being trivalent. A very weak 4f resonance is observed around the Ce 4d $\to$ 4f absorption edge, suggesting that the localized Ce 4f states are almost empty in the ground state. The Mn 2p XAS spectrum reveals the existence of the Mn(2+) multiplet feature, confirming the Mn(2+)-Mn(3+) mixed-valent states of Mn ions…
X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements in Pr0.5Ca0.5CoO3 were performed at the Pr M4,5, Pr L3, and Ca L2,3 absorption edges as a function of temperature below 300 K. Ca spectra show no changes down to 10 K while a noticeable thermally dependent evolution takes place at the Pr edges across the metal-insulator transition. Spectral changes are analyzed by different methods, including multiple scattering simulations, which provide quantitative details on an electron loss at Pr 4f orbitals. We conclude that in the insulating phase a fraction [15(+5)%] of Pr3+ undergoes a further oxidation to ad…
Sr2IrO4 was predicted to be an unconventional superconductor upon carrier doping since it highly resembles the high-temperature cuprates. Here, to understand carrier doping effect on spin-orbit coupled Mott insulator Sr2IrO4, the electronic structure and local structure distortion for Sr2-xLaxIrO4 system have been investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). By comparing the intensity of white-line features at the Ir L2,3 absorption edges, we observe remarkably large branching ratios in La-doped compounds, greater than that of the parent material Sr2IrO4, suggesting a strong spin-orbit…
We study the unoccupied electronic structure of the spin-1/2 quantum magnet TiOCl by x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) at the Ti L and O K edges. Data is acquired both in total electron and fluorescence yield mode (TEY and FY, respectively). While only the latter allows to access the unconventional low-temperature spin-Peierls (SP) phase of TiOCl the signal is found to suffer from significant self-absorption in this case. Nevertheless, we conclude from FY data that effects of the SP distortion on the electronic structure are absent within experimental accuracy. The similarity of …
Recently, hole-doped superconducting cuprates with the T'-structure La1.8-xEu0.2SrxCuO4 (LESCO) have attracted a lot of attention. We have performed x-ray photoemission and absorption spectroscopy measurements on as-grown and reduced T0-LESCO. Results show that electrons and holes were doped by reduction annealing and Sr substitution, respectively. However, it is shown that the system remains on the electron-doped side of the Mott insulator or that the charge-transfer gap is collapsed in the parent compound.
The total spectral weight \textit{S} of the emergent low-energy quasipaticles in high-temperature superconductors is explored by x-ray absorption spectroscopy. In order to examine the applicability of the Hubbard model, regimes that cover from zero doping to overdoping are investigated. In contrast to mean field theory, we found that \textit{S} deviates from linear dependence on the doping level \textit{p}. The slope of \textit{S} versus \textit{p} changes continuously throughout the whole doping range with no sign of saturation up to \textit{p} = 0.23. Therefore, the picture of Zhang-Rice sin…
The orbital symmetries of electron doped iron-arsenide superconductors Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 have been measured with x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The data reveal signatures of Fe d electron itinerancy, weak electronic correlations, and a high degree of Fe-As hybridization related to the bonding topology of the Fe dxz+yz states, which are found to contribute substantially at the Fermi level. The energies and detailed orbital character of Fe and As derived unoccupied s and d states are found to be in remarkably good agreement with the predictions of standard density functional theory.
