The asymptotics of the "strip" sums $S_\ell^{(\al)}(n)$ and of their $d$-sums generalizations $T_{d,ds}^{(\al)}(dm)$ (see Definition~\ref{definition1}) were calculated in~\cite{regev}. It was recently noticed that when $d>1$ there is a certain confusion about the relevant notations in~\cite{regev}, and the constant in the asymptotics of these $d$-sums $T_{d,ds}^{(\al)}(dm)$ seems to be off by a certain factor. Based on the techniques of~\cite{regev} we again calculate the asymptotics of the $d$-sums $T_{d,ds}^{(\al)}(dm)$. We do it here carefully and with complete details. This leads to Theorem~\ref{d.sum222} below, which replaces Corollary 4.4 of~\cite{regev} in the cases $d>1$.
Baryshnikov and Romik derived the combinatorial identities for the numbers of the $m$-strip tableaux. This generalized the classical André's theorem for the number of up-down permutations. They asked for a bijective proof for the enumeration of $3$-strip tableaux. In this paper we will provide such a bijective proof. First we count the $3$-strip tableaux by decomposition. Secondly we will apply this "decomposition" idea on the up-down permutations and down-up permutations to enumerate the $3$-strip tableaux bijectively.
Lusztig's fake degree is the generating polynomial for the major index of standard Young tableaux of a given shape. Results of Springer and James & Kerber imply that, mysteriously, its evaluation at a $k$-th primitive root of unity yields the number of border strip tableaux with all strips of size $k$, up to sign. This is essentially the special case of the Murnaghan-Nakayama rule for evaluating an irreducible character of the symmetric group at a rectangular partition. We refine this result to standard Young tableaux and border strip tableaux with a given number of descents. To do so, we intr…
We derive combinatorial identities, involving the Bernoulli and Euler numbers, for the numbers of standard Young tableaux of certain skew shapes. This generalizes the classical formulas of D. Andre on the number of up-down permutations. The analysis uses a transfer operator approach extending the method of Elkies, combined with an identity expressing the volume of a certain polytope in terms of a Schur function.
Let $g_{n_1,n_2}$ be the number of standard Young tableau of truncated shifted shape with $n_1$ rows and $n_2$ boxes in each row. By using of the integral method this paper derives the recurrence relations of $g_{3,n}$, $g_{n,4}$ and $g_{n,5}$ respectively. Specially, $g_{n,4}$ is the $(2n-1)$-st Pell number.
Suppose μand μ' are two partitions. We will let μ\oplus μ' denote the "direct sum" of the partitions, defined as the sorted partition made of the parts of $μ$ and $μ'$. In this paper, we define a summation operation on two Littlewood-Richardson fillings of type (μ, ν;λ) and (μ', ν';λ'), which results in a Littlewood-Richardson filling of type (μ\oplus μ', ν\oplus ν' ;λ\oplus λ'). We give an algorithm to produce the sum, and show that it terminates in a Littlewood-Richardson filling by defining a bijection between a Littlewood-Richardson filling and a flow on a honeycomb, and then showing that …
The asymptotics of the "$(k,\ell)$ hook" sums $S_{k,\ell}^{(2z)}(n)$ (see~\eqref{the.sums.1}) were calculated in~\cite{berele}. It was recently realized that in~\cite[Section 7]{berele} there are few misprints and certain confusion with regard to the notations, so that the precise asymptotics of $S_{k,\ell}^{(2z)}(n)$ is not clear. Here we add more details and carefully repeat these calculations, which lead to explicit values for the asymptotics of $S_{k,\ell}^{(2z)}(n).$
We study vectors formed by entries on the diagonal of standard Young tableaux of shifted shapes. Such vectors are in bijection with integer lattice points of certain integral polytopes, which are Minkowski sums of simplices. We also describe vertices of these polytopes, and construct corresponding shifted Young tableaux.
Let $\mathcal{T}_3$ be the three-rowed strip. Recently Regev conjectured that the number of standard Young tableaux with $n-3$ entries in the "skew three-rowed strip" $\mathcal{T}_3 / (2,1,0)$ is $m_{n-1}-m_{n-3}$, a difference of two Motzkin numbers. This conjecture, together with hundreds of similar identities, were derived automatically and proved rigorously by Zeilberger via his powerful program and WZ method. It appears that each one is a linear combination of Motzkin numbers with constant coefficients. In this paper we will introduce a simple bijection between Motzkin paths and standard …
We consider a new kind of straight and shifted plane partitions/Young tableaux --- ones whose diagrams are no longer of partition shape, but rather Young diagrams with boxes erased from their upper right ends. We find formulas for the number of standard tableaux in certain cases, namely a shifted staircase without the box in its upper right corner, i.e. truncated by a box, a rectangle truncated by a staircase and a rectangle truncated by a square minus a box. The proofs involve finding the generating function of the corresponding plane partitions using interpretations and formulas for sums of …
Let $δ=(δ_1,\ldots,δ_n)$ be a string of letters $h$ and $v$. We define a Young tableau to be $δ$-semistandard if the entries are weakly increasing along rows and columns, and the entries $i$ form a horizontal strip if $δ_i=h$ and a vertical strip if $δ_i=v$. We define $δ$-promotion on such tableaux via a modified jeu-de-taquin. The first main result is that $δ$-promotion has period $n$ on rectangular $δ$-semistandard tableaux, generalizing the results of Haiman and Rhoades for standard and semistandard tableaux. The second main result states that the set of rectangular $δ$-semistandard tableau…
We give a bijective proof of an identity relating primed shifted gl(n)-standard tableaux to the product of a gl(n) character in the form of a Schur function and a product of sums of x and y terms. This result generalises a number of well--known results due to Robbins and Rumsey, Chapman, Tokuyama, Okada and Macdonald. An analogous result is then obtained in the case of primed shifted sp(2n)-standard tableaux which are bijectively related to the product of a t-deformed sp(2n) character and another x and y product. All results are also interpreted in terms of alternating sign matrix identities, …
In this paper we use a probabilistic approach to derive the expressions for the characteristic functions of basic statistics defined on permutation tableaux. Since our expressions are exact, we can identify the distributions of basic statistics (like the number of unrestricted rows, the number of rows, and the number of 1s in the first row) exactly. In all three cases the distributions are known to be asymptotically normal after a suitable normalization. We also establish the asymptotic normality of the number of superfluous 1s. The latter result relies on a bijection between permutation table…
We define a new partial order on $SYT_n$, the set of all standard Young tableaux with $n$ cells, by combining the chain order with the notion of horizontal strips. We prove various desirable properties of this new order.
We investigate the lower asymptotic density of sumsets in $\mathbb{N}^2$ by proving certain Plünnecke type inequalities for various notions of lower density in $\mathbb{N}^2$. More specifically, we introduce a notion of lower tableaux density in $\mathbb{N}^2$ which involves averaging over convex tableaux-shaped regions in $\mathbb{N}^2$ which contain the origin. This generalizes the well known Plünnecke type inequality for the lower asymptotic density of sumsets in $\mathbb{N}$. We also provide a conjectural Plünnecke inequality for the more basic notion of lower rectangular asymtpotic densit…
We suggest an approach for the enumeration of minimal permutations having d descents which uses skew Young tableaux. We succeed in finding a general expression for the number of such permutations in terms of (several) sums of determinants. We then generalize the class of skew Young tableaux under consideration; this allows in particular to discover some presumably new results concerning Eulerian numbers.
We introduce and analyse an extension of the disjunctive sum operation on some classical impartial games. Whereas the disjunctive sum describes positions formed from independent subpositions, our operation combines positions that are not completely independent but interact only in a very restricted way. We extend the games Nim and Silver Dollar, played by moving counters along one-dimensional strips of cells, by joining several strips at their initial cell. We prove that, in certain cases, computing the Sprague-Grundy function can be simplified to that of a simpler game with at most two tokens…
Iterating the skew RSK correspondence discovered by Sagan and Stanley in the late '80s, we define a deterministic dynamics on the space of pairs of skew Young tableaux $(P,Q)$. We find that this skew RSK dynamics displays conservation laws which, in the picture of Viennot's shadow line construction, identify generalizations of Greene invariants. The introduction of a novel realization of $0$-th Kashiwara operators reveals that the skew RSK dynamics possesses symmetries induced by an affine bicrystal structure, which, combined with connectedness properties of Demazure crystals, leads to its lin…
