In order to construct accurate point sources simulations at the frequencies relevant to 21-cm experiments, the angular correlation of radio sources must be taken into account. This paper presents a measurement of angular two-point correlation function, w(θ), at 232 MHz from the MIYUN survey - tentative measurements of w(θ) are also performed at 151 MHz. It is found that double power law with shape w(θ) = A θ^{-γ} fits the 232 MHz data well. For the angular lenght of 0.2 degrees < θ< 0.6 degrees, γ~ -1.12, and this value of slope is independent of the flux-density threshold; while for angular lenghts much greater than 0.6 degrees, γhas a shallower value of about -0.16. By comparing the results of this paper with previous measurements of w(θ), it is discussed how w(θ) changes with the change of frequency and completness limit.
The Galactic disc is opaque to radio waves from extragalactic sources with frequencies nu less than ~3 MHz. However, radio waves with kHz, Hz, and even lower frequencies may propagate through the intergalactic medium (IGM). I argue that the presence of these waves can be inferred by using the Universe as our detector. I discuss possible sub-MHz sources and set new non-trivial upper limits on the energy density of sub-MHz radio waves in galaxy clusters and the average cosmic background. Limits based on five effects are considered: (1) changes in the expansion of the Universe from the radiation …
We examine the brightness of the Cosmic Radio Background (CRB) by comparing the contribution from individual source counts to absolute measurements. We use a compilation of radio counts to estimate the contribution of detected sources to the CRB in several different frequency bands. We apply a Monte Carlo Markov Chain technique to estimate the brightness values and uncertainties, paying attention to various sources of systematic error. We compare our results to absolute measurements from the ARCADE 2 experiment. At v = 150 MHz, 325 MHz, 408 MHz, 610 MHz, 1.4 GHz, 4.8 GHz, and 8.4 GHz our calcul…
In order to construct accurate point sources simulations at the frequencies relevant to 21 cm experiments, the angular correlation of radio sources must be taken into account. Using the 74 MHz VLSS survey, we measured the angular 2-point correlation function, w(θ). We obtain the first measurement of clustering at the low frequencies relevant to 21 cm tomography. We find that a single power law with shape w(θ) = A θ^{-γ} fits well the data. For a galactic cut of 10 degrees, with a data cut of δless than -10 degrees, and a flux limit of S = 770 mJy, we obtain a slope of γ= (-1.2 +/- 0.35). This …
We review an improved statistical model of extra-galactic point-source foregrounds first introduced in [Murray 2017], in the context of the Epoch of Reionization. This model extends the instrumentally-convolved foreground covariance used in inverse-covariance foreground mitigation schemes, by considering the cosmological clustering of the sources. In this short work, we show that over scales of $k \sim (0.6, 40.) h {\rm Mpc}^{-1}$, ignoring source clustering is a valid approximation. This is in contrast to [Murray 2017], who found a possibility of false detection if the clustering was ignored.…
Studying the spatial distribution of extragalactic source populations is vital in understanding the matter distribution in the Universe. It also enables understanding the cosmological evolution of dark matter density fields and the relationship between dark matter and luminous matter. Clustering studies are also required for EoR foreground studies since it affects the relevant angular scales. This paper investigates the angular and spatial clustering properties and the bias parameter of radio-selected sources in the Lockman Hole field at 325 MHz. The data probes sources with fluxes $\gtrsim$0.…
If the radio background is coming from cosmological sources, there should be some amount of clustering due to the large scale structure in the universe. Simple models for the expected clustering combined with the recent measurement by ARCADE-2 of the mean extragalactic temperature lead to predicted clustering levels that are substantially above upper limits from searches for anisotropy on arcminute scales using ATCA and the VLA. The rms temperature variations in the cosmic radio background appear to be more than a factor of 10 smaller (in temperature) than the fluctuations in the cosmic infrar…
In recent years, the level of the extragalactic radio background has become a point of considerable interest, with some lines of argument pointing to an entirely new cosmological synchrotron background. The contribution of the known discrete source population to the sky temperature is key to this discussion. Because of the steep spectral index of the excess over the cosmic microwave background, it is best studied at low frequencies where the signal is strongest. The Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) wide and deep sky surveys give us the best constraints yet on the contribution of discrete extragalac…
We present in this paper the general real- and redshift-space clustering properties of galaxies as measured in the first data release of the VIPERS survey. VIPERS is a large redshift survey designed to probe the distant Universe and its large-scale structure at 0.5 < z < 1.2. We describe in this analysis the global properties of the sample and discuss the survey completeness and associated corrections. This sample allows us to measure the galaxy clustering with an unprecedented accuracy at these redshifts. From the redshift-space distortions observed in the galaxy clustering pattern we provide…
The VIPERS galaxy survey has measured the clustering of $0.5<z<1.2$ galaxies, enabling a number of measurements of galaxy properties and cosmological redshift-space distortions (RSD). Because the measurements were made using one-pass of the VIMOS instrument on the Very Large Telescope (VLT), the galaxies observed only represent approximately 47\% of the parent target sample, with a distribution imprinted with the pattern of the VIMOS slitmask. Correcting for the effect on clustering has previously been achieved using an approximate approach developed using mock catalogues. Pairwise inverse pro…
We study the angular clustering of point sources in The GMRT (Giant Meter Wave Telescope) Sky Survey (TGSS). The survey at 150 MHz with delta > -53.5 degrees has a sky coverage of 3.6 pi steradians, i.e., 90% of the whole sky. We created subsamples by applying different total flux thresholds limit (S >> 5 sigma) for good completeness and measured the angular correlation function omega(theta) of point sources at large scales ( >= 1 degree). We find that the amplitude of angular clustering is higher for brighter subsamples, this indicates that higher threshold flux samples are hosted by massive …
The population of compact extragalactic sources contribute to the non-Gaussianity at Cosmic Microwave Background frequencies. We study their non-Gaussianity using publicly available full-sky simulations. We introduce a parametrisation to visualise efficiently the bispectrum and we describe the scale and frequency dependences of the bispectrum of radio and IR point-sources. We show that the bispectrum is well fitted by an analytical prescription. We find that the clustering of IR sources enhances their non-Gaussianity by several orders of magnitude, and that their bispectrum peaks in the squeez…
We investigate the dependence of galaxy clustering on luminosity and stellar mass in the redshift range 0.5<z<1.1, using the first ~55000 redshifts from the VIMOS Public Extragalactic Redshift Survey (VIPERS). We measured the redshift-space two-point correlation functions (2PCF), and the projected correlation function, in samples covering different ranges of B-band absolute magnitudes and stellar masses. We considered both threshold and binned galaxy samples, with median B-band absolute magnitudes -21.6<MB-5log(h)<-19.5 and median stellar masses 9.8<log(M*[Msun/h^2])<10.7. We assessed the real…
Cluster analysis is the distribution of objects into different groups or more precisely the partitioning of a data set into subsets (clusters) so that the data in subsets share some common trait according to some distance measure. Unlike classi cation, in clustering one has to rst decide the optimum number of clusters and then assign the objects into different clusters. Solution of such problems for a large number of high dimensional data points is quite complicated and most of the existing algorithms will not perform properly. In the present work a new clustering technique applicable to large…
Analyses of measurements of the distribution of absolute brightness temperature over the radio sky have led recently to suggestions that there exists a substantial unexplained extragalactic radio background. Consequently, there have been numerous attempts to place constraints on plausible origins for the `excess'. We suggest here this expectation of a large extragalactic background, over and above that contributed by the sources observed in the surveys, is based on an extremely simple geometry adopted to model the Galactic emission and the procedure adopted in the estimation of the extragalact…
Observations of the redshifted 21 cm HI fluctuations promise to be an important probe of the post-reionization era. In this paper we calculate the expected signal and foregrounds for the upgraded Ooty Radio Telescope (ORT) which operates at frequency =326.5 MHz which corresponds to redshift z=3.35. Assuming that the visibilities contain only the HI signal and system noise, we show that a 3 sigma detection of the HI signal ~ 1 mk is possible at angular scales 11 arc-minutes to 3 degree with ~ 1000 hours of observation. Foreground removal is one of the major challenges for a statistical detectio…
This paper outlines how the new GaLactic and Extragalactic All-sky MWA Survey (GLEAM, Wayth et al. 2015), observed by the Murchison Widefield Array covering the frequency range 72 - 231 MHz, allows identification of a new large, complete, sample of more than 2000 bright extragalactic radio sources selected at 151 MHz. With a flux density limit of 4 Jy this sample is significantly larger than the canonical fully-complete sample, 3CRR (Laing, Riley & Longair 1983). In analysing this small bright subset of the GLEAM survey we are also providing a first user check of the GLEAM catalogue ahead of i…
We present measurements of the growth rate of cosmological structure from the modelling of the anisotropic galaxy clustering measured in the final data release of the VIPERS survey. The analysis is carried out in configuration space and based on measurements of the first two even multipole moments of the anisotropic galaxy auto-correlation function, in two redshift bins spanning the range $0.5 < z < 1.2$. We provide robust and cosmology-independent corrections for the VIPERS angular selection function, allowing recovery of the underlying clustering amplitude at the percent level down to the Mp…
We present the Tiered Radio Extragalactic Continuum Simulation (T-RECS): a new simulation of the radio sky in continuum, over the 150 MHz-20 GHz range. T-RECS models two main populations of radio galaxies: Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) and Star-Forming Galaxies (SFGs), and corresponding sub-populations. Our model also includes polarized emission over the full frequency range, which has been characterised statistically for each population using the available information. We model the clustering properties in terms of probability distributions of hosting halo masses, and use lightcones extracted…
The GMRT has been used to make deep, wide-field surveys of several fields at 610 MHz, with a resolution of about 5 arcsec. These include the Spitzer Extragalactic First Look Survey field, where 4 square degrees were observed with a r.m.s. sensitivity of about 30 microJy/beam, and several SWIRE fields (namely the Lockman Hole, ELAIS-N1 and N2 fields) covering more than 20 square degrees with a sensitivity of about 80 microJy beam or better. The analysis of these observations, and some of the science results are described.
The low frequency tail of the CMB spectrum, down along the radio range (~1 GHz), may carry weak spectral distortions which are fingerprints of processes occurred during different epochs of the thermal history of the Universe, from z~3\times 10^6 to reionization. TRIS and ARCADE2 are the most recent experiments dedicated to the exploration of this chapter of CMB cosmology. The level of instrumental accuracy they reached in the determination of the absolute sky temperature is such that the removal of galactic and extra-galactic contamination is the true bottleneck towards the recovery of the cos…
We use a sample of about 22,000 galaxies at $0.65<z<1.2$ from the VIPERS PDR-1 catalogue, to constrain the cosmological model through a measurement of the galaxy {\it clustering ratio} $η_{g,R}$. This statistic has favourable properties, being defined as the ratio of two quantities characterizing the smoothed density field in spheres of given radius $R$: the value of its correlation function on a multiple of this scale, $ξ(nR)$, and its variance $σ^2(R)$. For sufficiently large values of $R$, this is a universal number, capturing 2-point clustering information independently of the linear bias …
One of the main goals of modern observational cosmology is to map the large scale structure of the Universe. A potentially powerful approach for doing this would be to exploit three-dimensional spectral maps, i.e. the specific intensity of extragalactic light as a function of wavelength and direction on the sky, to measure spatial variations in the total extragalactic light emission and use these as a tracer of the clustering of matter. A main challenge is that the observed intensity as a function of wavelength is a convolution of the source luminosity density with the rest-frame spectral ener…
The all-sky 408 MHz map of Haslam et al. is one the most important total-power radio surveys. It has been widely used to study diffuse synchrotron radiation from our Galaxy and as a template to remove foregrounds in cosmic microwave background data. However, there are a number of issues associated with it that must be dealt with, including large-scale striations and contamination from extragalactic radio sources. We have re-evaluated and re-processed the rawest data available to produce a new and improved 408 MHz all-sky map. We first quantify the positional accuracy ($\approx 7$ arcmin) and e…
We report quasi-simultaneous GMRT observations of seven extragalactic radio sources at 150, 325, 610 and 1400 MHz, in an attempt to accurately define their radio continuum spectra, particularly at frequencies below the observed spectral turnover. We had previously identified these sources as candidates for a sharply inverted integrated radio spectrum whose slope is close to, or even exceeds $α_c$ = +2.5, the theoretical limit due to synchrotron self-absorption (SSA) in a source of incoherent synchrotron radiation arising from relativistic particles with the canonical (i.e., power-law) energy d…
We present the discovery of another Odd Radio Circle (ORC) with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) at 944 MHz. The observed radio ring, ORC J0102-2450, has a diameter of ~70 arcsec or 300 kpc, if associated with the central elliptical galaxy DES J010224.33-245039.5 (z ~ 0.27). Considering the overall radio morphology (circular ring and core) and lack of ring emission at non-radio wavelengths, we investigate if ORC J0102-2450 could be the relic lobe of a giant radio galaxy seen end-on or the result of a giant blast wave. We also explore possible interaction scenarios, for …
In this first paper of the series, we present initial results of newly upgraded Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) observation of European Large-Area ISO Survey-North 1 (ELAIS-N1) at 325 MHz with 32 MHz bandwidth. Precise measurement of fluctuations in Galactic and extragalactic foreground emission as a function of frequency as well as angular scale is necessary for detecting redshifted 21-cm signal of neutral hydrogen from Cosmic Dawn, Epoch of Reionization (EoR) and post-reionization epoch. Here, for the first time we have statistically quantified the Galactic and extragalactic foregrou…
The Hubble constant $H_{0}$ and matter density $Ω_{m}$ of the Universe are measured using the latest $γ$-ray attenuation results from Fermi-LAT and Cherenkov telescopes. This methodology is based upon the fact that the extragalactic background light supplies opacity for very high energy photons via photon-photon interaction. The amount of $γ$-ray attenuation along the line of sight depends on the expansion rate and matter content of the Universe. This novel strategy results in a value of $H_{0}=67.4_{-6.2}^{+6.0}$~km~s$^{-1}$~Mpc$^{-1}$ and $Ω_{m}=0.14_{-0.07}^{+0.06}$. These estimates are ind…
We use the VIPERS final data release to investigate the performance of colour-selected populations of galaxies as tracers of linear large-scale motions. We empirically select volume-limited samples of blue and red galaxies as to minimise the systematic error on the estimate of the growth rate $fσ_8$ from the anisotropy of the two-point correlation function. To this end, rather than rigidly splitting the sample into two colour classes we define the red/blue fractional contribution of each object through a weight based on the $(U-V)$ colour distribution. Using mock surveys that are designed to r…
Using the latest physical modeling and constrained by the most recent data, we develop a phenomenological parameterized model of the contributions to intensity and polarization maps at millimeter wavelengths from external galaxies and Sunyaev-Zeldovich effects. We find such modeling to be necessary for estimation of cosmological parameters from Planck data. For example, ignoring the clustering of the infrared background would result in a bias in n_s of 7 sigma. We show that the simultaneous marginalization over a full foreground model can eliminate such biases, while increasing the statistical…

The low-frequency linearly-polarised radio source population is largely unexplored. However, a renaissance in low-frequency polarimetry has been enabled by pathfinder and precursor instruments for the Square Kilometre Array. In this second paper from the POlarised GaLactic and Extragalactic All-Sky Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) Survey -- the POlarised GLEAM Survey, or POGS -- we present the results from our all-sky MWA Phase I Faraday Rotation Measure survey. Our survey covers nearly the entire Southern sky in the Declination range $-82^{\circ}$ to $+30^{\circ}$ at a resolution between aroun…
The extragalactic $γ$-ray background (EGB) arises from the accumulation of $γ$-ray emissions from resolved and unresolved extragalactic sources as well as diffuse processes. It is important to study the statistical properties of the EGB in the context of cosmological structure formation. Known astrophysical $γ$-ray sources such as blazars, star-forming galaxies, and radio galaxies are expected to trace the underlying cosmic matter density distribution. We explore the correlation of the EGB from Fermi-LAT data with the large-scale matter density distribution from the Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam (H…
We present the first measurement of the angular two-point correlation function for AKARI 90-$μ$m point sources, detected outside of the Milky Way plane and other regions characterized by high Galactic extinction, and categorized as extragalactic sources according to our far-infrared-color based criterion (Pollo et al. 2010). This is the first measurement of the large-scale angular clustering of galaxies selected in the far-infrared after IRAS measurements. Although a full description of clustering properties of these galaxies will be obtained by more detailed studies, using either spatial corr…
The shape of the curves defined by the counts of radio sources per unit area as a function of their flux density was one of the earliest cosmological probes. Radio source counts continue to be an area of interest, used to study the relative populations of galaxy types in the Universe (as well as investigate any cosmological evolution in luminosity functions). They are a vital consideration for determining how source confusion may limit the depth of a radio interferometer observation, and are essential for characterising extragalactic foregrounds in CMB experiments. There is currently no consen…
We present optical spectroscopy, near-infrared (mostly K-band) and radio (151-MHz and 1.4-GHz) imaging of the first complete region (TOOT00) of the TexOx-1000 (TOOT) redshift survey of radio sources. The 0.0015-sr (~ 5 deg^2) TOOT00 region is selected from pointed observations of the Cambridge Low-Frequency Survey Telescope at 151 MHz at a flux density limit of ~= 100 mJy, ~ 5-times fainter than the 7C Redshift Survey (7CRS), and contains 47 radio sources. We have obtained 40 spectroscopic redshifts (~ 85% completeness). Adding redshifts estimated for the 7 other cases yields a median redshift…
We use the CRPropa code to simulate the propagation of ultra high energy cosmic rays (with energy $\geq 10^{18} \rm eV$ and pure proton composition) through extragalactic magnetic fields that have been simulated with the cosmological ENZO code.We test both primordial and astrophysical magnetogenesis scenarios in order to investigate the impact of different magnetic field strengths in clusters, filaments and voids on the deflection of cosmic rays propagating across cosmological distances. We also study the effect of different source distributions of cosmic rays around simulated Milky-Way like o…
We present an extensive analysis on the determination of the isotropic radio background. We consider six different radio maps, ranging from 22 MHz to 2.3 GHz and covering a large fraction of the sky. The large scale emission is modeled as a linear combination of an isotropic component plus the Galactic synchrotron radiation and thermal bremsstrahlung. Point-like and extended sources are either masked or accounted for by means of a template. We find a robust estimate of the isotropic radio background, with limited scatter among different Galactic models. The level of the isotropic background li…
Deep, wide, near-infrared imaging surveys provide an opportunity to study the clustering of various galaxy populations at high redshift on the largest physical scales. We have selected $1<z<2$ extremely red objects (EROs) and $1<z<3$ distant red galaxies (DRGs) in SA22 from the near-infrared photometric data of the UKIDSS Deep eXtragalactic Survey (DXS) and $gri$ optical data from CTIO covering 3.3~deg$^2$. This is the largest contiguous area studied to sufficient depth to select these distant galaxies to date. The angular two-point correlation functions and the real space correlation lengths …

An understanding of cosmic magnetism requires converting the polarization properties of extragalactic radio sources into the rest-frame in which the corresponding polarized emission or Faraday rotation is produced. Motivated by this requirement, we present a catalog of multiwavelength linear polarization and total intensity radio data for polarized sources from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS). We cross-match these sources with a number of complementary measurements -- combining data from major radio polarization and total intensity surveys such as AT20G, B3-VLA, GB6, NORTH6CM, Texas, and WENSS,…
The Planck satellite has proved to be a very successful mission, which has been operating flawlessly for more than 36 months. Its main purpose is to map the anisotropies of the CMB radiation at 9 frequencies, between 30 and 857 GHz, with unprecedented resolution and sensitivity. After a description of the properties and cosmological aims of Planck, we review the results obtained during the first 1.6 full sky surveys relative to compact extragalactic sources and their implications. The most recent and efficient methods and filters for compact source detection in the presence of Gaussian noise a…
Polarization measurements at low radio frequencies allow detection of small Faraday rotation measures caused by regular magnetic fields in galaxies and in the foreground of the Milky Way. The galaxy M31 was observed in two overlapping pointings with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) resulting in ~4' resolution in total intensity and linearly polarized emission. The frequency range 310-376 MHz was covered by 1024 channels which allowed the application of RM synthesis. We derived a data cube in Faraday depth and compared two symmetric ranges of negative and positive Faraday depths.…
The continuum emission from 1 to 2 GHz of The HI/OH/Recombination line survey of the inner Milky Way (THOR) at $\lesssim$18" resolution covers $\sim 132$ square degrees of the Galactic plane and detects 10387 sources. Similarly, the first data release of the Global View of Star Formation in the Milky Way (GLOSTAR) surveys covers $\sim 16$ square degrees of the Galactic plane from 4-8 GHz at 18" resolution and detects 1575 sources. However, a large fraction of the unresolved discrete sources detected in these radio continuum surveys of the Galactic plane remain unclassified. Here, we study the …
One of the main goals of Cosmology is to search for the imprint of primordial gravitational waves in the CMB polarisation field, to probe inflationary theories. One of the obstacles toward the detection of the primordial signal is to extract the B-mode polarisation from astrophysical contaminations. We present a complete analysis of extragalactic foreground contamination due to polarised emission of radio and dusty star-forming galaxies. We update or use up-to-date models that are validated using the most recent measurements. We predict the flux limit (confusion noise) for the future CMB space…

We present measurements of the clustering of hot and cold patches in the microwave background sky as measured from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) five-year data. These measurements are compared with theoretical predictions which assume that the cosmological signal obeys Gaussian statistics. We find significant differences from the simplest Gaussian-based prediction. However, the measurements are sensitive to the fact that the noise is spatially inhomogeneous (e.g., because different parts of the sky were observed for different lengths of time). We show how to account for this …

We used the Rotation Measure (RM) catalogue derived from the LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey Data Release 2 (LoTSS DR2) at 144-MHz to measure the evolution with redshift of the extragalactic RM (RRM: Residual RM) and the polarization fraction ($p$) of sources in low density environments. We also measured the same at 1.4-GHz by cross-matching with the NRAO VLA Sky Survey RM catalogue. We find that RRM versus redshift is flat at 144-MHz, but, once redshift-corrected, it shows evolution at high significance. Also $p$ evolves with redshift with a decrement by a factor of $\sim$8 at $z\sim2$. Comparing …
The Lockman Hole is a well-studied extragalactic field with extensive multi-band ancillary data covering a wide range in frequency, essential for characterising the physical and evolutionary properties of the various source populations detected in deep radio fields (mainly star-forming galaxies and AGNs). In this paper we present new 150-MHz observations carried out with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR), allowing us to explore a new spectral window for the faint radio source population. This 150-MHz image covers an area of 34.7 square degrees with a resolution of 18.6$\times$14.7 arcsec and rea…
The PAMELA, Fermi and HESS experiments (PFH) have shown anomalous excesses in the cosmic positron and electron fluxes. A very exciting possibility is that those excesses are due to annihilating dark matter (DM). In this paper we calculate constraints on leptonically annihilating DM using observational data on diffuse extragalactic gamma-ray background and measurements of the optical depth to the last-scattering surface, and compare those with the PFH favored region in the m_{DM} - <σ_A v> plane. Having specified the detailed form of the energy input with PYTHIA Monte Carlo tools we solve the r…
The cosmic evolution of bias of different source populations with underlying dark matter density field in post reionization era can shed light on large scale structures. Studying the angular and spatial distribution of different compact sources using deep radio catalogue at low-frequency is essential to understand the matter distribution of the present Universe. Here, we investigate the relationship of luminous matter with their host dark matter haloes by measuring the angular and spatial clustering of sources (two-point statistics), using deep radio observation of ELAIS N1 (EN1) field with up…
We compare the measured angular cross-correlation between the Fermi-LAT gamma-ray sky and catalogues of extra-galactic objects with the expected signal induced by weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter (DM). We include a detailed description of the contribution of astrophysical gamma-ray emitters such as blazars, misaligned AGN and star forming galaxies, and perform a global fit to the measured cross-correlation. Five catalogues are considered: SDSS-DR6 quasars, 2MASS galaxies, NVSS radio galaxies, SDSS-DR8 Luminous Red Galaxies and SDSS-DR8 main galaxy sample. To model the cro…
