Deep, wide, near-infrared imaging surveys provide an opportunity to study the clustering of various galaxy populations at high redshift on the largest physical scales. We have selected $1<z<2$ extremely red objects (EROs) and $1<z<3$ distant red galaxies (DRGs) in SA22 from the near-infrared photometric data of the UKIDSS Deep eXtragalactic Survey (DXS) and $gri$ optical data from CTIO covering 3.3~deg$^2$. This is the largest contiguous area studied to sufficient depth to select these distant galaxies to date. The angular two-point correlation functions and the real space correlation lengths of each population are measured and show that both populations are strongly clustered and that the clustering cannot be parameterised with a single power law. The correlation function of EROs shows a double power law with the inflection at $\sim$ 0.6$'$--1.2$'$ (0.6--1.2~h$^{-1}$~Mpc). The bright EROs ($K<18.8$) show stronger clustering on small scales but similar clustering on larger scales, whereas redder EROs show stronger clustering on all scales. Clustering differences between EROs that are old passively evolved galaxies (OGs) and dusty star-forming galaxies (DGs), on the basis of their $J-K$ colour, are also investigated. The clustering of $r-K$ EROs are compared with that of $i-K$ EROs and the differences are consistent with their expected redshift distributions. The correlation function of DRGs is also well described by a double power law and consistent with previous studies once the effects of the broader redshift distribution our selection of DRGs returns are taken into account. We also perform the same analysis on smaller sub-fields to investigate the impact of cosmic variance on the derived clustering properties. Currently this study is the most representative measurement of the clustering of massive galaxies at $z>1$ on large scales.
We investigate the cosmic evolution of low luminosity ($L_{\rm{1.4GHz}}<10^{25}\rm{W~Hz^{-1}sr^{-1}}$) radio sources in the XMM Large Scale Structure survey field (XMM-LSS). We match low frequency selected (610~MHz) radio sources in the XMM-LSS field with near infrared $K$-band observations over the same field from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey. We use both the mean $V/V_{\rm{max}}$ statistic and the radio luminosity function of these matched sources to quantify the evolution of the co-moving space density of the low luminosity radio sources in our sample. Our results indicate that the lo…
We measure the angular clustering of 33 415 extremely red objects (EROs) in the Elais-N1 field covering 5.33 deg$^{2}$, which cover the redshift range $z=0.8$ to $2$. This sample was made by merging the UKIDSS Deep eXtragalactic Survey (DXS) with the optical Subaru and Pan-STARRS PS1 datasets. We confirm the existence of a clear break in the angular correlation function at $\sim 0.02^{\circ}$ corresponding to $1 h^{-1}$ Mpc at $z\sim1$. We find that redder or brighter EROs are more clustered than bluer or fainter ones. Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) model fits imply that the average mass o…
We present a catalog of over 130,000 quasars candidates with NIR photometric properties, with an areal coverage of approximately 1,200 deg^2. This is achieved by matching the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) in the optical ugriz bands, to the UKIRT Infrared Digital Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS) in the near-infrared YJHK bands. We match the ~1 million SDSS DR6 Photometric Quasar catalog to Data Release 3 of the UKIDSS LAS (ULAS), and produce a catalog with 130,827 objects with detections in one or more NIR bands, of which 74,351 objects have optical and K-band detections and 42,133…
We present a sample of 8498 quasars with both SDSS $ugriz$ optical and UKIDSS $YJHK$ near-IR photometric data. With this sample, we obtain the median colour-z relations based on 7400 quasars with magnitude uncertainties less than 0.1mag in all bands. By analyzing the quasar colours, we propose an empirical criterion in the $Y-K$ vs. $g-z$ colour-colour diagram to separate stars and quasars with redshift $z<4$, and two other criteria for selecting high-z quasars. Using the SDSS-UKIDSS colour-z relations, we estimate the photometric redshifts of 8498 SDSS-UKIDSS quasars, and find that 85.0% of t…
We present a study of galaxy environments to z~2, based on a sample of over 33,000 K-band selected galaxies detected in the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS). The combination of infrared depth and area in the UDS allows us to extend previous studies of galaxy environment to z>1 without the strong biases associated with optical galaxy selection. We study the environments of galaxies divided by rest frame (U-B) colours, in addition to `passive' and `star-forming' subsets based on template fitting. We find that galaxy colour is strongly correlated with galaxy overdensity on small scales (<1Mpc diame…
We present spectroscopic confirmation of ten highly luminous (L >= 2L*) Lyman alpha emitters in the redshift range 6.01<z<6.49 (nine galaxies and one AGN), initially drawn from a sample of fourteen z_phot >= 6 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) selected from an area of 0.25 square degrees within the UKIDSS Ultra-deep Survey (UDS). Overall, our high rate of spectroscopic confirmation (>= 71%) and low rate of contamination provides a strong vindication of the photometric redshift analysis used to define the original sample. By considering star-formation rate estimates based on the Ly_alpha and UV conti…
We present observations of a new double-image gravitational lens system, ULAS J082016.1+081216, of image separation 2.3" and high (~6) flux ratio. The system is selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectroscopic quasar list using new high-quality images from the UKIRT Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS). The lensed quasar has a source redshift of 2.024, and we identify the lens galaxy as a faint red object of redshift 0.803+/-0.001. Three other objects from the UKIDSS survey, selected in the same way, were found not to be lens systems. Together with the earlier lens found using this method, the SDS…
We investigate the stellar populations of Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) at z=3.1 and 3.7 in 0.65 deg^2 of the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Field, based on rest-frame UV-to-optical photometry obtained from the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey, the UKIDSS/Ultra Deep Survey, and the Spitzer legacy survey of the UKIDSS/UDS. Among a total of 302 LAEs (224 for z=3.1 and 78 for z=3.7), only 11 are detected in the K band, i.e., brighter than K(3sigma)=24.1 mag. Eight of the 11 K-detected LAEs are spectroscopically confirmed. We find that the K-undetected objects, which should closely represent the LAE population…
We have analysed a sample of 1292 4.5 micron-selected galaxies at z>=3, over 0.6 square degrees of the UKIRT Infrared Deep Survey (UKIDSS) Ultra Deep Survey (UDS). Using photometry from the U band through 4.5 microns, we have obtained photometric redshifts and derived stellar masses for our sources. Only two of our galaxies potentially lie at z>5. We have studied the galaxy stellar mass function at 3<=z<5, based on the 1213 galaxies in our catalogue with [4.5]<= 24.0. We find that: i) the number density of M > 10^11 Msun galaxies increased by a factor > 10 between z=5 and 3, indicating that th…
We use the UKIDSS Ultra-Deep Survey to trace the evolution of galaxy clustering to z = 3. Using photometric redshifts derived from data covering the wavelength range 0.3 - 4.5 um we examine this clustering as a function of absolute K-band luminosity, colour and star-formation rate. Comparing the deprojected clustering amplitudes, we find that red galaxies are more strongly clustered than blue galaxies out to at least z = 1.5, irrespective of rest-frame K-band luminosity. We then construct passive and star-forming samples based on stellar age, colour and star-formation histories calculated from…
The efficient selection of high-redshift emission galaxies is important for future large galaxy redshift surveys for cosmology. Here we describe the target selection methods for the FastSound project, a redshift survey for H alpha emitting galaxies at z=1.2-1.5 using Subaru/FMOS to measure the linear growth rate fσ8 via Redshift Space Distortion (RSD) and constrain the theory of gravity. To select ~400 target galaxies in the 0.2 deg^2 FMOS field-of-view from photometric data of CFHTLS-Wide (u*g'r'i'z'), we test several different methods based on color-color diagrams or photometric redshift est…
We present new results on the cosmic star formation history in the SXDS-UDS field out to z=1.6. We compile narrow-band data from the Subaru Telescope and the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) in conjunction with broad-band data from the SXDS and UDS, to make a selection of 5725 emission-line galaxies in 12 redshift slices, spanning 10 Gyr of cosmic time. We determine photometric redshifts for the sample using 11-band photometry, and use a spectroscopically confirmed subset to fine tune the resultant redshift distribution. We use the maximum-likelihood technique to det…
We investigate galactic-scale outflows in the redshift range 0.71 < z < 1.63, using 413 K-band selected galaxies observed in the spectroscopic follow-up of the UKIDSS Ultra-Deep Survey (UDSz). The galaxies have an average stellar mass of ~10^9.5 solar masses and span a wide range in rest-frame colours, representing typical star-forming galaxies at this epoch. We stack the spectra by various galaxy properties, including stellar mass, [OII] equivalent width, star-formation rate, specific star-formation rate and rest-frame spectral indices. We find that outflows are present in virtually all spect…
We investigate the environments of both X-ray and radio-loud AGN within the UKIDSS Ultra-deep Survey (UDS) using deep infrared selection to sample the galaxy density field in the redshift range 1.0 <= z <= 1.5. Using angular cross-correlation techniques we find that both X-ray and radio-loud AGN preferentially reside in overdense environments. We also find that both types of AGN cluster more strongly with those galaxies classified as `passive' rather than those that are actively star-forming. We infer clustering scale lengths comparable to those of passive red galaxies, suggesting that typical…
Submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) are among the most luminous dusty galaxies in the Universe, but their true nature remains unclear; are SMGs the progenitors of the massive elliptical galaxies we see in the local Universe, or are they just a short-lived phase among more typical star-forming galaxies? To explore this problem further, we investigate the clustering of SMGs identified in the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey. We use a catalogue of submillimetre ($850μ$m) source identifications derived using a combination of radio counterparts and colour/IR selection to analyse a sample of 914 SMGs in th…
We combine data from the MGC, SDSS and UKIDSS LAS surveys to produce ugrizYJHK luminosity functions and densities from within a common, low redshift volume (z<0.1, ~71,000 h_1^-3 Mpc^3 for L* systems) with 100 per cent spectroscopic completeness. In the optical the fitted Schechter functions are comparable in shape to those previously reported values but with higher normalisations (typically 0, 30, 20, 15, 5 per cent higher phi*-values in u, g, r, i, z respectively over those reported by the SDSS team). We attribute these to differences in the redshift ranges probed, incompleteness, and adopte…
We characterise the stellar masses and star formation rates in a sample of almost 40000 spectroscopically confirmed UV luminous galaxies at 0.3<z<1.0 selected from within the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey. In particular, we match this UV bright population to wide-field infrared surveys such as the near infrared UKIDSS LAS and the mid infrared WISE All-Sky Survey. We find that ~30% of the UV luminous WiggleZ galaxies are detected at >5sigma in the UKIDSS-LAS at all redshifts. An even more luminous subset of 15% are also detected in the WISE 3.4 and 4.6um bands. We compute stellar masses for this v…
We present new results on the evolution of the cosmic star formation rate as a function of stellar mass in the SXDS-UDS field. We make use of narrow-band selected emission line galaxies in four redshift slices between z = 1.46 and z = 0.63, and compute stellar masses by fitting a series of templates to recreate each galaxy's star formation history. We determine mass-binned luminosity functions in each redshift slice, and derive the star formation rate density (rhoSFR) as a function of mass using the [OIII] or [OII] emission lines. We calculate dust extinction and metallicity as a function of s…
We present a large-scale galaxy structure Cl J021734-0513 at z~0.65 discovered in the UKIDSS UDS field, made of ~20 galaxy groups and clusters, spreading over 10 Mpc. We report on a VLT/VIMOS spectroscopic follow-up program that, combined with past spectroscopy, allowed us to confirm four galaxy clusters (M200 ~ 10^14 Msol) and a dozen associated groups and star-forming galaxy overdensities. Two additional filamentary structures at z ~ 0.62 and z ~ 0.69 and foreground and background clusters at 0.6 < z < 0.7 were also confirmed along the line-of-sight. The structure subcomponents are at differ…
High redshift quasars (HZQs) with redshifts of z >~ 6 are so rare that any photometrically-selected sample of sources with HZQ-like colours is likely to be dominated by Galactic stars and brown dwarfs scattered from the stellar locus. It is impractical to reobserve all such candidates, so an alternative approach was developed in which Bayesian model comparison techniques are used to calculate the probability that a candidate is a HZQ, P_q, by combining models of the quasar and star populations with the photometric measurements of the object. This method was motivated specifically by the large …
We present the result of projected cross correlation analysis of AGNs and galaxies at redshifts from 0.3 to 3.0. The Japanese Virtual Observatory (JVO) was used to obtain the Subaru Suprime-Cam images and UKIDSS catalog data around AGNs. We investigated 1,809 AGNs, which is about ten times larger a sample than that used in previous studies on AGN-galaxy clustering at redshifts larger than 0.6. 90% of the AGN samples are optically-selected AGN from the SDSS and 2dF catalogs. The galaxy samples at low redshift includes many redder objects from UKIDSS survey, while at higher redshift they are mai…
We combine photometry from the UDS, and CANDELS UDS and CANDELS GOODS-S surveys to construct the galaxy stellar mass function probing both the low and high mass end accurately in the redshift range 0.3<z<3. The advantages of using a homogeneous concatenation of these datasets include meaningful measures of environment in the UDS, due to its large area (0.88 deg^2), and the high resolution deep imaging in CANDELS (H_160 > 26.0), affording us robust measures of structural parameters. We construct stellar mass functions for the entire sample as parameterised by the Schechter function, and find th…
We present multiwavelength identifications for the counterparts of 1088 submillimeter sources detected at 850$μ$m in the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey study of the UKIDSS-UDS field. By utilising an ALMA pilot study on a subset of our bright SCUBA-2 sample as a training set, along with the deep optical-near-infrared data available in this field, we develop a novel technique, Optical-IR Triple Color (OIRTC), using $z-K$, $K-[3.6]$, $[3.6]-[4.5]$ colors to select the candidate submillimeter galaxy (SMG) counterparts. By combining radio identification and the OIRTC technique, we find counterpart…
We study the dependence of angular two-point correlation functions on stellar mass ($M_{*}$) and specific star formation rate (sSFR) of $M_{*}>10^{10}M_{\odot}$ galaxies at $z\sim1$. The data from UKIDSS DXS and CFHTLS covering 8.2 deg$^{2}$ sample scales larger than 100 $h^{-1}$Mpc at $z\sim1$, allowing us to investigate the correlation between clustering, $M_{*}$, and star formation through halo modeling. Based on halo occupation distributions (HODs) of $M_{*}$ threshold samples, we derive HODs for $M_{*}$ binned galaxies, and then calculate the $M_{*}/M_{\rm halo}$ ratio. The ratio for cent…
We have assembled a large sample of 5996 quasars at redshift 2.0=< z <= 2.4 (high-z) or 0.7=< z <= 1.1 (low-z) from SDSS data release nine and seven quasar catalogs. The spectral energy distribution (SED) of quasars were constructed by collecting WISE, UKIDSS, and GALEX photometric data in addition to SDSS, from which the IR luminosity at 1-7 μm and bolometric luminosity at 1100 Å- 1 μm were calculated. A red tail is clearly seen in the distributions of the spectral index in 1100 Å- 1 μm both for high-z and low-z sources, which is likely due to red or reddened quasars. The covering factor of d…
From a search of a ~ 2400 square degree region covered by both the SDSS and UKIDSS databases, we have attempted to identify galaxies at z ~ 0.5 that are consistent with their being essentially unmodified examples of the luminous passive compact galaxies found at z ~ 2.5. After isolating good candidates via deeper imaging, we further refine the sample with Keck moderate-resolution spectroscopy and laser-guide-star adaptive-optics imaging. For 4 of the 5 galaxies that so far remain after passing through this sieve, we analyze plausible star-formation histories based on our spectra in order to id…
We use the UKIDSS Ultra-Deep Survey, the deepest degree-scale near-infrared survey to date, to investigate the clustering of star-forming and passive galaxies to z ~ 3.5. Our new measurements include the first determination of the clustering for passive galaxies at z > 2, which we achieve using a cross-correlation technique. We find that passive galaxies are the most strongly clustered, typically hosted by massive dark matter halos with M_halo > 5 x 10^12 M_sun irrespective of redshift or stellar mass. Our findings are consistent with models in which a critical halo mass determines the transit…
We report the results of a search for serendipitous [CII] 157.74$μ$m emitters at $z\sim4.4$-$4.7$ using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The search exploits the AS2UDS continuum survey, which covers ~50 arcmin$^2$ of the sky towards 695 luminous ($S_{870}\gtrsim1$mJy) submillimeter galaxies (SMGs), selected from the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey (S2CLS) 0.96deg$^2$ Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) field. We detect ten candidate line emitters, with an expected false detection rate of ten percent. All of these line emitters correspond to 870$μ$m continuum-detected sources in AS2…
Recent work has shown that the star formation-density relation -- in which galaxies with low star formation rates are preferentially found in dense environments -- is still in place at z~1, but the situation becomes less clear at higher redshifts. We use mass-selected samples drawn from the UKIDSS Ultra-Deep Survey to show that galaxies with quenched star formation tend to reside in dense environments out to at least z~1.8. Over most of this redshift range we are able to demonstrate that this star formation-density relation holds even at fixed stellar mass. The environmental quenching of star …
We use the optical--infrared imaging in the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey field, in combination with the new deep radio map of Arumugam et al., to calculate the distribution of radio luminosities among galaxies as a function of stellar mass in two redshift bins across the interval 0.4<z<1.2. This is done with the use of a new Bayesian method to classify stars and galaxies in surveys with multi-band photometry, and to derive photometric redshifts and stellar masses for those galaxies. We compare the distribution to that observed locally and find agreement if we consider only objects believed to be w…
From a search of a portion of the sky covered by the SDSS and UKIDSS databases, we have located 2 galaxies at z~0.5 that have properties similar to those of the luminous passive compact galaxies found at z~2.5. From Keck moderate-resolution spectroscopy and laser-guided adaptive-optics imaging of these galaxies, we can begin to put together a more detailed picture of what their high-redshift counterparts might be like. Spectral-synthesis models that fit the u to K photometry also seem to give good fits to the spectral features. From these models, we estimate masses in the range of 3-4 10^11 M_…
Quasars with redshifts greater than 4 are rare, and can be used to probe the structure and evolution of the early universe. Here we report the discovery of six new quasars with $i$-band magnitudes brighter than 19.5 and redshifts between 2.4 and 4.6 from the YFOSC spectroscopy of the Lijiang 2.4m telescope in February, 2012. These quasars are in the list of $z>3.6$ quasar candidates selected by using our proposed $J-K/i-Y$ criterion and the photometric redshift estimations from the SDSS optical and UKIDSS near-IR photometric data. Nine candidates were observed by YFOSC, and five among six new …
We analyze the clustering of red and blue galaxies from four samples spanning a redshift range of 0.4<z<2.0 to test the various scenarios by which galaxies evolve onto the red sequence. The data are taken from the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey, DEEP2, and COMBO-17. The use of clustering allows us to determine what fraction of the red sequence is made up of central galaxies and satellite galaxies. At all redshifts, including z=0, the data are consistent with ~60% of satellite galaxies being red or quenched, implying that ~1/3 of the red sequence is comprised of satellite galaxies. More than three-fo…
Quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) whose spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are reddened by dust either in their host galaxies or in intervening absorber galaxies are to a large degree missed by optical color selection criteria like the one used by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). To overcome this bias against red QSOs, we employ a combined optical and near-infrared color selection. In this paper, we present a spectroscopic follow-up campaign of a sample of red candidate QSOs which were selected from the SDSS and the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS). The spectroscopic data and SDSS/UKID…
We investigate mass-dependent galaxy evolution based on a large sample of (more than 50,000) K-band selected galaxies in a multi-wavelength catalog of the Subaru/XMM-Newton Deep Survey (SXDS) and the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS)/Ultra Deep Survey (UDS). We employ the optical to near-infrared photometry to determine photometric redshifts of these galaxies. Then, we estimate the stellar mass of our sample galaxies using a standard fitting procedure. From the sample galaxies, we obtain the stellar mass function of galaxies and the cosmic stellar mass density up to z<4. Our results are …
We improve estimates of stellar mass and mass-weighted average age of Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) host galaxies by combining UV and near-IR photometry with optical photometry in our analysis. Using 206 SNe Ia drawn from the full three-year SDSS-II Supernova Survey (median redshift of z {\approx} 0.2) and multi-wavelength host-galaxy photometry from SDSS, GALEX, and UKIDSS, we present evidence of a correlation (1.9σ confidence level) between the residuals of SNe Ia about the best-fit Hubble relation and the mass-weighted average age of their host galaxies. The trend is such that older galaxies ho…
Aims. We present a determination of the intrinsic colors and ages of galaxies at very high redshift, in particular old galaxies (OGs) within extremely red objects (EROs). To date, the definition of EROs has been restricted to objects with z<2.5, however, here consider objects with the same properties but shifted to higher redshifts (z>2.5). We therefore, refer to these objects as very high-redshift EROs (Z-EROS, herein). Methods. We analyze 63,550 galaxies selected in the XMM-LSS field. To obtain a reasonably sized sample of EROs, it is essential to consider a very wide area surveys. We identi…
We present results of the cross-correlation analysis between active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and galaxies at redshift 0.1-1. We obtain data of ~10,000 SDSS AGNs in which their virial masses with a super-massive black hole (SMBH) were estimated. The UKIDSS galaxy samples around the AGNs were obtained using the virtual observatory. The scale length of AGN-galaxy cross-correlation for all of the samples is measured to be r_0= 5.8+0.8-0.6 h^-1Mpc (for the fixed slope parameter γ=1.8). We also derived a dependence of r_0 on the BH mass, M_BH, and found an indication of an increasing trend of r_0 at M…
We present a study of the evolution of the galaxy Velocity Dispersion Function (VDF) from z=0 to z=1.5 using photometric data from the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) and Newfirm Medium Band Survey (NMBS) COSMOS surveys. The VDF has been measured locally using direct kinematic measurements from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, but direct studies of the VDF at high redshift are difficult as they require velocity dispersion measurements of many thousands of galaxies. Taylor et al. (2010) demonstrated that dynamical and stellar mass are linearly related when the structure of the galaxy is accounted f…
We have analysed a sample of 25 extremely red H-[4.5]>4 galaxies, selected using 4.5 micron data from the Spitzer SEDS survey and deep H-band data from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) CANDELS survey, over ~180 square arcmin of the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) field. Our aim is to investigate the nature of this rare population of mid-infrared (mid-IR) sources that display such extreme near-to-mid-IR colours. Using up to 17-band photometry (U through 8.0 microns), we have studied in detail their spectral energy distributions, including possible degeneracies in the photometric redshift/interna…
We use the HiZELS narrow-band H-alpha survey in combination with CANDELS, UKIDSS and WIRDS near-infrared imaging, to investigate the morphologies, merger rates and sizes of a sample of H-alpha emitting galaxies in the redshift range z=0.40 - 2.23, an epoch encompassing the rise to the peak of the star formation rate density. Merger rates are estimated from space- and ground-based imaging using the M20 coefficient. To account for the increase in the specific star-formation rate (sSFR) of the star forming `main-sequence' with redshift, we normalise the star-formation rate of galaxies at each epo…
We report the discovery of a galaxy cluster at z=1.62 located in the Spitzer Wide-Area Infrared Extragalactic survey XMM-LSS field. This structure was selected solely as an overdensity of galaxies with red Spitzer/IRAC colors, satisfying [3.6]-[4.5] > -0.1 AB mag. Photometric redshifts derived from Subaru XMM Deep Survey (BViz-bands), UKIRT Infrared Deep Survey-Ultra-Deep Survey (UKIDSS-UDS, JK-bands), and from the Spitzer Public UDS survey (3.6-8.0 micron) show that this cluster corresponds to a surface density of galaxies at z ~ 1.6 that is more than 20 sigma above the mean at this redshift.…
We address the fundamental question of matching the rest-frame K-band luminosity function (LF) of galaxies over the Hubble time using semi-analytic models, after modification of the stellar population modelling. We include the Maraston evolutionary synthesis models, that feature a higher contribution by the Thermally Pulsating - Asymptotic Giant Branch (TP-AGB) stellar phase, into three different semi-analytic models, namely the De Lucia and Blaizot version of the Munich model, MORGANA and the Menci model. We leave all other input physics and parameters unchanged. We find that the modification…
Galaxy counts and recent measurements of the luminosity density in the near-infrared (NIR) have indicated the possibility that the local universe may be under-dense on scales of several hundred megaparsecs. The presence of a large-scale under-density in the local universe could introduce significant biases into the interpretation of cosmological observables, and, in particular, into the inferred effects of dark energy on the expansion rate. Here we measure the K-band luminosity density as a function of redshift to test for such a local under-density. In this effort, we combine photometry from …
We present a clustering analysis of Luminous Red Galaxies in SDSS Stripe 82. We study the angular 2-point correlation function, of 130,000 LRG candidates via colour-cut selections in izK with the K band coverage coming from UKIDSS LAS. We have used the cross-correlation technique of Newman (2008) to establish the LRG redshift distribution. Cross-correlating with SDSS QSOs, MegaZ-LRGs and DEEP2 galaxies implies an average LRG redshift of z~1 with space density, n_g~3.2 +/-0.16 x10^-4 h^3 Mpc^-3. For theta<10', w(theta) significantly deviates from a single power-law. A double power-law with a br…
To compare photometric properties of galaxies at different redshifts, the fluxes need to be corrected for the changes of effective rest-frame wavelengths of filter bandpasses, called K-corrections. Usual approaches to compute them are based on the template fitting of observed spectral energy distributions (SED) and, thus, require multi-colour photometry. Here, we demonstrate that, in cases of widely used optical and near-infrared filters, K-corrections can be precisely approximated as two-dimensional low-order polynomials of only two parameters: redshift and one observed colour. With this mini…
A complete, flux density limited sample of 96 faint ($> 0.5$ mJy) radio sources is selected from the 10C survey at 15.7 GHz in the Lockman Hole. We have matched this sample to a range of multi-wavelength catalogues, including SERVS, SWIRE, UKIDSS and optical data; multi-wavelength counterparts are found for 80 of the 96 sources and spectroscopic redshifts are available for 24 sources. Photometric reshifts are estimated for the sources with multi-wavelength data available; the median redshift of the sample is 0.91 with an interquartile range of 0.84. Radio-to-optical ratios show that at least 9…
Context. Clusters of galaxies are important for cosmology and astrophysics. They may be discovered through either the summed optical/IR radiation originating from their member galaxies or via X-ray emission originating from the hot intracluster medium. X- ray samples are not affected by projection effects but a redshift determination typically needs optical and infrared follow-up to then infer X-ray temperatures and luminosities. Aims. We want to confirm serendipitously discovered X-ray emitting cluster candidates and measure their cosmological redshift through the analysis and exploration of …
We use a large K-selected sample of 299,961 galaxies from the REFINE survey, consisting of a combination of data from three of the deepest near-infrared surveys: UKIDSS UDS, COSMOS/UltraVISTA and CFHTLS-D1/VIDEO, that were homogeneously reduced to obtain photometric redshifts and stellar masses. We detect 2588 candidate galaxy groups up to $z=3.15$ at $S/N>1.5$. We build a very pure ($>90\%$) sample of 448 candidate groups up to $z=2.5$ and study some of their properties. Cluster detection is done using the DElaunay TEssellation ClusTer IdentiFication with photo-z (DETECTIFz) algorithm that we…
We present a new population of z>2 dust-reddened, Type 1 quasars with 0.5<E(B-V)<1.5, selected using near infra-red (NIR) imaging data from the UKIDSS-LAS, ESO-VHS and WISE surveys. NIR spectra obtained using the Very Large Telescope (VLT) for 24 new objects bring our total sample of spectroscopically confirmed hyperluminous (>10^{13}L_0), high-redshift dusty quasars to 38. There is no evidence for reddened quasars having significantly different H$α$ equivalent widths relative to unobscured quasars. The average black-hole masses (~10^9-10^10 M_0) and bolometric luminosities (~10^{47} erg/s) ar…
We present the results of a study investigating the rest-frame ultra-violet (UV) spectral slopes of redshift z~5 Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs). By combining deep Hubble Space Telescope imaging of the CANDELS and HUDF fields with ground-based imaging from the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS), we have produced a large sample of z~5 LBGs spanning an unprecedented factor of >100 in UV luminosity. Based on this sample we find a clear colour-magnitude relation (CMR) at z~5, such that the rest-frame UV slopes (beta) of brighter galaxies are notably redder than their fainter counterparts. We determine tha…
We present evidence for a strong relationship between galaxy size and environment for the quiescent population in the redshift range 1 < z < 2. Environments were measured using projected galaxy overdensities on a scale of 400 kpc, as determined from ~ 96,000 K-band selected galaxies from the UKIDSS Ultra Deep Survey (UDS). Sizes were determined from ground-based K-band imaging, calibrated using space-based CANDELS HST observations in the centre of the UDS field, with photometric redshifts and stellar masses derived from 11-band photometric fitting. From the resulting size-mass relation, we con…
New results from a large survey of H-alpha emission-line galaxies at z=0.84 using WFCAM/UKIRT and a custom narrow-band filter in the J band are presented as part of the HiZELS survey. Reaching an effective flux limit of 1e-16 erg/s/cm^2 in a comoving volume of 1.8e5 Mpc^3, this represents the largest and deepest survey of its kind ever done at z~1. There are 1517 potential line emitters detected across 1.4 sq.deg of the COSMOS and UKIDSS UDS fields, of which 743 are selected as H-alpha emitters. These are used to calculate the H-alpha luminosity function, which is well-fitted by a Schechter fu…
