The GMRT has been used to make deep, wide-field surveys of several fields at 610 MHz, with a resolution of about 5 arcsec. These include the Spitzer Extragalactic First Look Survey field, where 4 square degrees were observed with a r.m.s. sensitivity of about 30 microJy/beam, and several SWIRE fields (namely the Lockman Hole, ELAIS-N1 and N2 fields) covering more than 20 square degrees with a sensitivity of about 80 microJy beam or better. The analysis of these observations, and some of the science results are described.
This paper describes a 50 MHz system being developed for GMRT to provide imaging capability in the frequency range 30-90MHz. Due to its larger collecting area and higher antenna efficiency, the low frequency GMRT system will be several times more sensitive than the present 74 MHz VLA system and is likely to remain a competitive instrument in this frequency band. In the first phase of this project, receiver systems consisting of V-dipole feeds and front-ends have been installed on four of the thirty GMRT antennas. Test observations were carried out on a number of bright 3C sources. The initial …
Astrophysical sources such as radio halos and relics in galaxy clusters, supernova remnants and radio galaxies have angular sizes from a few to several $10$s of arcminutes. In radio interferometric imaging of such sources, the largest angular size of the source that can be imaged is limited by the shortest projected baseline towards the source. It is essential to determine the limitations of the recovery of the extended features on various angular scales in order to interpret the radio image. We simulated observations of a model extended source of Gaussian shape with the Giant Metrewave Radio …
Venus was observed at frequencies of 1297.67 MHz (23 cm), 607.67 MHz (49 cm) and 233.67 MHz (1.28 m) with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) during the period of 25th July and 6th September 2015 when it was close to its inferior conjunction. Values of the brightness temperature (Tb) of Venus from these observations were derived as 622{\pm}43 K, 554{\pm}38 K for 1297.67 and 607.67 MHz frequencies, respectively, are in agreement with the previous observations. The attempt to derive the Tb at 233.67 MHz affirms an upper limit of 321 K which is significantly lower than the previously repor…
We present observations of three active sites of star formation in the Taurus Molecular Cloud complex taken at 323 and 608 MHz (90 and 50 cm, respectively) with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). Three pointings were observed as part of a pathfinder project, targeted at the young stellar objects (YSOs) L1551 IRS 5, T Tau and DG Tau (the results for these target sources were presented in a previous paper). In this paper, we search for other YSOs and present a survey comprising of all three fields; a by-product of the large instantaneous field of view of the GMRT. The resolution of the …
The timing follow-up of newly discovered millisecond pulsars (MSPs) is hindered by the larger positional uncertainty (a few tens of arc-minutes) associated with the discovery. In this paper, we present the localization of two MSPs, discovered by the GMRT High Resolution Southern Sky (GHRSS) survey, up to arc-second accuracy using a 33~MHz offline coherently dedispersed gated correlator. This gated correlator is an upgraded version of the earlier 16~MHz design. This new development with a factor of two enhancement in the observing bandwidth offers better sensitivity in the image domain, leading…
The Venusian surface has been studied by measuring radar reflections and thermal radio emission over a wide spectral region of several centimeters to meter wavelengths from the Earth-based as well as orbiter platforms. The radiometric observations, in the decimeter (dcm) wavelength regime showed a decreasing trend in the observed brightness temperature (Tb) with increasing wavelength. The thermal emission models available at present have not been able to explain the radiometric observations at longer wavelength (dcm) to a satisfactory level. This paper reports the first interferometric imaging…
We have carried out a dedicated transient survey of 300 deg$^2$ of the SDSS Stripe 82 region using the Giant Meterwavelength Radio Telescope (GMRT) at 150 MHz. Our multi-epoch observations, together with the TGSS survey, allow us to probe variability and transient activity on four different timescales, beginning with 4 hours, and up to 4 years. Data calibration, RFI flagging, source finding and transient search were carried out in a semi-automated pipeline incorporating the SPAM recipe. This has enabled us to produce superior-quality images and carry out reliable transient search over the enti…
We present the first full release of a survey of the 150 MHz radio sky, observed with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope between April 2010 and March 2012 as part of the TGSS project. Aimed at producing a reliable compact source survey, our automated data reduction pipeline efficiently processed more than 2000 hours of observations with minimal human interaction. Through application of innovative techniques such as image-based flagging, direction-dependent calibration of ionospheric phase errors, correcting for systematic offsets in antenna pointing, and improving the primary beam model, we c…
We are conducting a survey for pulsars and transients using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). The GMRT High Resolution Southern Sky (GHRSS) survey is an off-Galactic-plane (|b|>5) survey in the declination range -40 deg to -54 deg at 322 MHz. With the high time (up to 30.72 micro-sec) and frequency (up to 0.016275 MHz) resolution observing modes, the 5-sigma detection limit is 0.5 mJy for a 2 ms pulsar with 10% duty cycle at 322 MHz. Total GHRSS sky coverage of 2866 square-deg, will result from 1953 pointing, each covering 1.8 square-deg. The 10-sigma detection limit for a 5 milli-se…
We present 610 MHz spectropolarimetric images from the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). We discuss the properties of the GMRT's full-polarisation mode in detail and provide a technical characterisation of the instrument's polarisation performance. We show that the telescope can be used for wide-field spectropolarimetry. The application of Rotation Measure Synthesis results in a sensitivity at the level of tens of micro-Jy in Faraday space. As a demonstration of the instrument's capabilities, we present observations of two Southern Compact Groups - the Grus Quartet and USCG S063. The obs…
This paper details on the discovery of 21 pulsars using the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) from targeted (Fermi directed search) and blind surveys (GMRT High Resolution Southern Sky - GHRSS) and results from the follow up studies. We discovered seven millisecond pulsars (MSPs) in the Fermi directed searches, which are the first Galactic MSPs discovered with the GMRT. We have discovered 13 pulsars (including a MSP and two mildly recycled pulsars) with the GHRSS survey, which is an off-Galactic-plane survey at 322 MHz with complementary target sky (declination range -40 deg to -54 deg) t…
High-resolution astronomical imaging at sub-GHz radio frequencies has been available for more than 15 years, with the VLA at 74 and 330 MHz, and the GMRT at 150, 240, 330 and 610 MHz. Recent developments include wide-bandwidth upgrades for VLA and GMRT, and commissioning of the aperture-array-based, multi-beam telescope LOFAR. A common feature of these telescopes is the necessity to deconvolve the very many detectable sources within their wide fields-of-view and beyond. This is complicated by gain variations in the radio signal path that depend on viewing direction. One such example is phase e…

Modeling of frequency-dependent effects, contributed by the turbulence in the free electron density of interstellar plasma, is required to enable the detection of the expected imprints from the stochastic gravitational-wave (GW) background in pulsar timing data. In this work, we present an investigation of temporal variations of interstellar medium for a set of millisecond pulsars (MSPs) with the upgraded GMRT aided by large fractional bandwidth at lower observing frequencies. Contrary to the conventional narrow-band analysis using a frequency invariant template profile, we applied $PulsePortr…
We present the first spectropolarimetric radio observations that apply Rotation Measure (RM) Synthesis to interferometric data from the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) at 610 MHz. Spectropolarimetry requires measurement of a large number of instrumental systematics so that their effects can be calibrated - a technical problem that is currently being faced by the upcoming SKA pathfinders. Our fully-calibrated data allow for the peak Faraday depth and polarisation fraction to be measured for sub-mJy compact sources in the field of M51 at 610 MHz. The diffuse extended emission in the inter…
We present the first dedicated radio continuum survey of a Kepler K2 mission field, Field 1 covering the North Galactic Cap. The survey is wide field, contemporaneous, multi-epoch, and multi-resolution in nature and was conducted at low radio frequencies between 140 and 200 MHz. The multi-epoch and ultra wide field (but relatively low resolution) part of the survey was provided by 15 nights of observation with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) over a period of approximately a month, contemporaneous with K2 observations of the field. The multi-resolution aspect of the survey was provided by t…
The upgraded GMRT (uGMRT) with its unprecedented sensitivity and high figure of merit, is expected to result in the discovery of a large population of pulsars including pulsars of previously unknown type. In the phase-2 of the GMRT High Resolution Southern Sky (GHRSS) survey with the uGMRT we will reach 1/4th of sensitivity of the SKA Phase-1. In this paper we highlight the salient features of the survey of pulsars and fast transients with the uGMRT highlighting its discovery potential. The extended GMRT (eGMRT) equipped with wide field- of-view, increased collecting area will have unprecedent…
