Motivated by the recent numerical evidence[1] of a short-range resonating valence bond state in the honeycomb lattice Hubbard model, we consider Schwinger boson mean field theories of possible spin liquid states on honeycomb lattice. From general stability considerations the possible spin liquids will have gapped spinons coupled to Z$_2$ gauge field. We apply the projective symmetry group(PSG) method to classify possible Z$_2$ spin liquid states within this formalism on honeycomb lattice. It is found that there are only two relevant Z$_2$ states, differed by the value of gauge flux, zero or $π$, in the elementary hexagon. The zero-flux state is a promising candidate for the observed spin liquid and continuous phase transition into commensurate Néel order. We also derive the critical field theory for this transition, which is the well-studied O(4) invariant theory[2-4], and has an irrelevant coupling between Higgs and boson fields with cubic power of spatial derivatives as required by lattice symmetry. This is in sharp contrast to the conventional theory[5], where such transition generically leads to non-colinear incommensurate magnetic order. In this scenario the Z$_2$ spin liquid could be close to a tricritical point. Soft boson modes will exist at seven different wave vectors. This will show up as low frequency dynamical spin susceptibility peaks not only at the $Γ$ point (the Néel order wave vector) but also at Brillouin zone edge center $M$ points and twelve other points. Some simple properties of the $π$-flux state are studies as well. Symmetry allowed further neighbor mean field ansatz are derived in Appendix which can be used in future theoretical works along this direction.
In our previous work, we identify the Sublattice-Pairing State (SPS) in Schwinger-fermion representation as the spin liquid phase discovered in recent numerical study on a honeycomb lattice. In this paper, we show that SPS is identical to the zero-flux $Z_2$ spin liquid in Schwinger-boson representation found by Wang\cite{Wang2010} by an explicit duality transformation. SPS is connected to an \emph{unusual} antiferromagnetic ordered phase, which we term as chiral-antiferromagnetic (CAF) phase, by an O(4) critical point. CAF phase breaks the SU(2) spin rotation symmetry completely and has three…
We analyze the biquadratic bilinear Heisenberg magnet on a honeycomb lattice via Schwinger boson formalism. Due to their vulnerability to quantum fluctuations, non conventional lattices (kagome, triangular and honeycomb for example) have been cited as candidates to support spin liquid states. Such states without long range order at zero temperature are known in one-dimensional spin models but their existence in higher dimensional systems is still under debate. Biquadratic interaction is responsible for various possibilities and phases as it is well-founded for one-dimensional systems. Here we …
Spin liquids are novel states of matter with fractionalized excitations. A recent numerical study of Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice\cite{Meng2010} indicates that a gapped spin liquid phase exists close to the Mott transition. Using Projective Symmetry Group, we classify all the possible spin liquid states by Schwinger fermion mean-field approach. We find there is only one fully gapped spin liquid candidate state: "Sublattice Pairing State" that can be realized up to the 3rd neighbor mean-field amplitudes, and is in the neighborhood of the Mott transition. We propose this state as the spi…

Low-energy states of quantum spin liquids are thought to involve partons living in a gauge-field background. We study the spectrum of Majorana fermions of Kitaev's honeycomb model on spherical clusters. The gauge field endows the partons with half-integer orbital angular momenta. As a consequence, the multiplicities reflect not the point-group symmetries of the cluster, but rather its projective symmetries, operations combining physical and gauge transformations. The projective symmetry group of the ground state is the double cover of the point group.
The spin$-1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the honeycomb bilayer lattice is shown to display a rich variety of semiclassical and genuinely quantum phases, controlled by the interplay between intralayer frustration and interlayer exchange. Employing a complementary set of techniques, comprising spin rotationally invariant Schwinger boson mean field theory, bond operators, and series expansions we unveil the quantum phase diagram, analyzing low-energy excitations and order parameters. By virtue of Schwinger bosons we scan the complete range of exchange parameters, covering both long range orde…
Motivated by the rich physics of honeycomb magnetic materials, we obtain the phase diagram and analyze magnetic properties of the spin-1/2 and spin-1 J1-J2-J3 Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice. Based on the SU(2) and SU(3) symmetry representations of the Schwinger boson approach, which treats disordered spin liquids and magnetically ordered phases on an equal footing, we obtain the complete phase diagrams in the (J2,J3)plane. This is achieved using a fully unrestricted approach which does not assume any pre-defined Ansatze. For S=1/2, we find a quantum spin liquid (QSL) stabilized betw…
In the present paper we present some new data supporting the existence of a spin-disordered phase in the Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice with antiferromagnetic interactions up to third neighbors along the line J2=J3, predicted in [Phys. Rev. B 83, 094506 (2011)]. We use the Schwinger boson technique followed by a mean field decoupling and exact diagonalization for small systems to show the existence of an intermediate phase with a spin gap and short range Néel correlations in the strong quantum limit (S=1/2).
With strong geometric frustration and quantum fluctuations, S=1/2 quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnets on the Kagome lattice has long been considered as an ideal platform to realize spin liquid (SL), a novel phase with no symmetry breaking and fractionalized excitations. A recent numerical study of Heisenberg S=1/2 Kagome lattice model (HKLM) show that in contrast to earlier studies, the ground state is a singlet-gapped SL with signatures of Z2 topological order. Motivated by this numerical discovery, we use projective symmetry group to classify all 20 possible Schwinger-fermion mean-field stat…
To study exotic excitations described by parafermions in the possible spin liquid states of SU($n$) spin systems, we introduce a parafermion parton approach. The SU($n$) spin operators can be represented by clock and shift matrices, which are shown to be the polynomials of parafermion operators in the parafermion representation. We find that SU($n$) spins can be decomposed into $n$ parafermion matrices of degree one. In this decomposition, the spin has a $\{\bigotimes{\rm SU}(n)\}^{n-1}$ gauge symmetry. As an application, we study the one-dimensional three-state clock model and generalized Kit…
We study the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a bilayer honeycomb lattice including interlayer frustration. Using a set of complementary approaches, namely Schwinger bosons, dimer series expansion, bond operators, and exact diagonalization, we map out the quantum phase diagram. Analyzing ground state energies and elementary excitation spectra, we find four distinct phases, corresponding to three collinear magnetic long range ordered states, and one quantum disordered interlayer dimer phase. We detail, that the latter phase is adiabatically connected to an "exact" singlet product ground s…
In this paper we analyze the groundstate and finite-temperature properties of a frustrated Heisenberg $J_1-J_2$ model on a honeycomb lattice by employing the Schwinger boson technique. The phase diagram and spin gap as functions of ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}$ are presented, showing that the exotic spin liquid phase lies in $0.21<{J}_{2}/{J}_{1} <0.43$. The temperature and magnetic-field dependences of specific heat, magnetic susceptibility and Knight shift are also presented. We find the spin liquid state is robust with respect to external magnetic field. These results provide clear information characte…
In the present paper we study the phase diagram of the Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice with antiferromagnetic interactions up to third neighbors along the line $J_2=J_3$ that include the point $J_2=J_3=J_1/2$, corresponding to the highly frustrated point where the classical ground state has macroscopic degeneracy. Using the Linear Spin-Wave, Schwinger boson technique followed by a mean field decoupling and exact diagonalization for small systems we find an intermediate phase with a spin gap and short range Néel correlations in the strong quantum limit (S=1/2). All techniques provide …
We study the frustrated Heisenberg model on the bilayer honeycomb lattice. The ground-state energy and spin gap are calculated, using different bosonic representations at mean field level and numerical calculations, to explore different sectors of the phase diagram. In particular we make use of a bond operator formalism and series expansion calculations to study the extent of dimer inter-layer phase. On the other hand we use the Schwinger boson method and exact diagonalization on small systems to analyze the evolution of on-layer phases. In this case we specifically observe a phase that presen…
We use a projective symmetry group analysis to determine all symmetric spin liquids on the stuffed honeycomb lattice Heisenberg model. This lattice interpolates between honeycomb, triangular and dice lattices, always preserving hexagonal symmetry, and it already has one spin liquid candidate, TbInO$_3$, albeit with strong spin-orbit coupling not considered here. In addition to the stuffed honeycomb lattice itself, we gain valuable insight into potential spin liquids on the honeycomb and triangular lattices, as well as how they might be connected. For example, the sublattice pairing state propo…
We study the ground-state phase diagram of the frustrated quantum $J_1-J_2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the honeycomb lattice using a mean field approach in terms of the Schwinger boson representation of the spin operators. We present results for the ground-state energy, local magnetization, energy gap and spin-spin correlations. The system shows magnetic long range order for $0\leq J_{2}/J_{1}\lesssim 0.2075$ (Néel) and $0.398\lesssim J_{2}/J_{1}\leq 0.5$ (spiral). In the intermediate region, we find two magnetically disordered phases: a gapped spin liquid phase which shows short-range Néel…
It is shown that the semimetallic state of the two-dimensional honeycomb lattice with a point-like Fermi surface is unstable towards a canted antiferromagnetic insulator upon application of an in-plane magnetic field. This instability is already present at the mean-field level; the magnetic field shifts the up- and the down-spin cones in opposite directions thereby generating a finite density of states at the Fermi surface and a perfect nesting between the up- and the down-spin Fermi sheets. This perfect nesting triggers a canted antiferromagnetic insulating state. Our conclusions, based on me…
We use a combination of analytical and numerical techniques to study the phase diagram of the frustrated Heisenberg model on the bilayer honeycomb lattice. Using the Schwinger boson description of the spin operators followed by a mean field decoupling, the magnetic phase diagram is studied as a function of the frustration coupling $J_{2}$ and the interlayer coupling $J_{\bot}$. The presence of both magnetically ordered and disordered phases is investigated by means of the evaluation of ground-state energy, spin gap, local magnetization and spin-spin correlations. We observe a phase with a spin…
We investigate the generic features of the low energy dynamical spin structure factor of the Kitaev honeycomb quantum spin liquid perturbed away from its exact soluble limit by generic symmetry-allowed exchange couplings. We find that the spin gap persists in the Kitaev-Heisenberg model, but generally vanishes provided more generic symmetry-allowed interactions exist. We formulate the generic expansion of the spin operator in terms of fractionalized Majorana fermion operators according to the symmetry enriched topological order of the Kitaev spin liquid, described by its projective symmetry gr…
By including a material-relevant off-diagonal interaction called the $Γ$ term into the Kitaev model and introducing spatial anisotropy in the interaction strength on the honeycomb lattice, we obtain a series of nodal Z$_2$ quantum spin liquids (QSLs) from parton approach. These QSLs share the same projective symmetry group and are characterized by certain numbers of symmetry-protected Majorana cones in their low-energy excitation spectrum. We illustrate that the physical properties of the QSLs are dependent on the information of the cones. Using the $\pmb k\cdot\pmb p$ method, we analyze the c…
The extension of the linear flavor-wave theory (LFWT) to fully antisymmetric irreducible representations (irreps) of $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ is presented in order to investigate the color order of $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg models in several two-dimensional geometries. The square, triangular and honeycomb lattices are considered with $m$ fermionic particles per site. We present two different methods: the first method is the generalization of the multiboson spin-wave approach to $\mathrm{SU}(N)$ which consists of associating a Schwinger boson to each state on a site. The second meth…
The Kitaev honeycomb model hosts a fascinating fractionalized state of matter featuring emergent Majorana fermions and a vison particle that carries the flux of an emergent gauge field. In the exactly solvable model these visons are static but certain perturbations can induce their motion. We show that the nature of the vison motion induced by a Zeeman field is sharply distinct in the ferromagnetic vs the antiferromagnetic Kitaev models. Namely, in the ferromagnetic model the vison has a trivial non-projective translational symmetry, whereas in the antiferromagnetic Kitaev model it has a proje…
We study possible spin liquids on square lattice that respect all lattice symmetries and time-reversal symmetry within the framework of Schwinger boson (mean-field) theory. Such spin liquids have spin gap and emergent Z_2 gauge field excitations. We classify them by the projective symmetry group method, and find six spin liquid states that are potentially relevant to the J_1-J_2 Heisenberg model. The properties of these states are studied under mean-field approximation. Interestingly we find a spin liquid state that can go through continuous phase transitions to either the Néel magnetic order …
We explore the phase diagram of the strongly correlated Hubbard model with intrinsic spin orbit coupling on the honeycomb lattice. We obtain the low energy effective model describing the spin degree of freedom. We study the resulting model within the Schwinger boson and Schwinger fermion approaches. The Schwinger boson approach gives the boundary between the spin liquid phase and the magnetically ordered phases, Neel order and incommensurate Neel order. We find that increasing the strength of the spin orbit coupling, narrows the width of the spin liquid region. The Schwinger fermion approach s…
Recently it was realized that the zigzag magnetic order in Kitaev materials can be stabilized by small negative off-diagonal interactions called the $Γ'$ terms. To fully understand the effect of the $Γ'$ interactions, we investigate the quantum $K$-$Γ$-$Γ'$ model on the honeycomb lattice using the variational Monte Carlo method. Two multinode Z$_2$ quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are found at $Γ'>0$, one of which is the previously found proximate Kitaev spin liquid called the PKSL14 state which shares the same projective symmetry group (PSG) with the Kitaev spin liquid. A remarkable result is that…
Projective symmetry groups (PSG) are the mathematical tools which allow to list and classify mean-field spin liquids (SL) based on a parton construction. The seminal work of Wen and its subsequent extension to bosons by Wang and Vishwanath concerned the so-called symmetric SL: i.e. states that break neither lattice symmetries nor time reversal invariance. Here we generalize this approach to chiral (time reversal symmetry breaking) SL described in a Schwinger boson mean-field approach. A special emphasis is put on frustrated lattices (triangular and kagome lattices), where the possibility of a …
We theoretically study a spin Hamiltonian for spin-orbit-coupled ferromagnets on the honeycomb lattice. We find that the effective Hamiltonian for magnons, a quanta of spin-wave excitations from ordered states, is equivalent to the Haldane model for electrons in the honeycomb lattice, which indicates the nontrivial topology of the magnon bands and the existence of the associated edge state. We also take the Schwinger boson (or bosonic spinon) representations of spins that are applicable both to ordered and disordered phases. We show that the spinon bands within the mean-field treatment are top…
We numerically investigate the critical behavior of the Hubbard model on the honeycomb and the $π$-flux lattice, which exhibits a direct transition from a Dirac semimetal to an antiferromagnetically ordered Mott insulator. We use projective auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo simulations and a careful finite-size scaling analysis that exploits approximately improved renormalization-group-invariant observables. This approach, which is successfully verified for the three-dimensional XY transition of the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model, allows us to extract estimates for the critical couplings and the cr…
We calculate dynamical spin structure factors for gapped chiral spin liquid states in the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice using Schwinger-boson mean-field theory. In contrast to static (equal-time) structure factors, the dynamical structure factor shows clear signatures of time-reversal symmetry breaking for chiral spin liquid states. In particular, momentum inversion $\bm{k} \to -\bm{k}$ symmetry as well as the six-fold rotation symmetry around the $Γ$-point are lost. We highlight other interesting features, such as a relatively flat onset of the two-spinon continuum…
In numerical simulations, spontaneously broken symmetry is often detected by computing two-point correlation functions of the appropriate local order parameter. This approach, however, computes the square of the local order parameter, and so when it is {\it small}, very large system sizes at high precisions are required to obtain reliable results. Alternatively, one can pin the order by introducing a local symmetry breaking field, and then measure the induced local order parameter infinitely far from the pinning center. The method is tested here at length for the Hubbard model on honeycomb lat…
Perfect deporalization of the Loudon-Fleury inelastic visible-light scattering in the Kitaev honeycomb model is well known. Though it happens in Heisenberg Kagome and triangular antiferromagnets as well, yet we prove it to be of geometric origin rather than peculiar to quantum spin liquids. A Kitaev spin liquid in the square planar geometry indeed exhibits polarized Raman spectra containing defferent symmetry species, each brought by symmetry-compatible spinon geminate excitations, i.e. arising from symmetry-compatible direct-product representations made of double-valued irreducible representa…
We give a complete classification of fully symmetric as well as chiral $\mathbb{Z}_2$ quantum spin liquids on the pyrochlore lattice using a projective symmetry group analysis of Schwinger boson mean-field states. We find 50 independent ansätze, including the 12 fully symmetric nearest-neighbor $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquids that have been classified by Liu et al. [https://journals.aps.org/prb/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevB.100.075125]. For each class we specify the most general symmetry-allowed mean-field Hamiltonian. Additionally, we test the properties of a subset of the spin liquid ansätze by solv…
We describe dynamical symmetry breaking in a system of massless Dirac fermions with both electromagnetic and four-fermion interactions in (2+1) dimensions. The former is described by the Pseudo Quantum Electrodynamics (PQED) and the latter is given by the so-called Gross-Neveu action. We apply the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation and the large$-N_f$ expansion in our model to obtain a Yukawa action. Thereafter, the presence of a symmetry broken phase is inferred from the non-perturbative Schwinger-Dyson equation for the electron propagator. This is the physical solution whenever the fine-str…

Recently, a number of experiments indicate the possible presence of spin liquid phases in quantum magnets with spin-1/2 and spin-1 moments sitting on triangular-lattice-based structures in Ba3CuSb2O9 and Ba3NiSb2O9 respectively. In relation to these experiments, several theoretical proposals have been made for spin liquid phases and spin-liquid-like behaviours on the stacked triangular lattice. While the crystal structures of these materials are currently under debate, it is nonetheless interesting to understand possible spin liquid phases on such frustrated lattices. In this work, we apply Sc…
Quantum circuit dynamics with local projective measurements can realize a rich spectrum of entangled states of quantum matter. Motivated by the physics of the Kitaev quantum spin liquid [1], we study quantum circuit dynamics in (2+1)-dimensions involving local projective measurements, in which the monitored trajectories realize (i) a phase with topological quantum order or (ii) a "critical" phase with a logarithmic violation of area-law-scaling of the entanglement entropy along with long range tripartite entanglement. A Majorana parton description of these dynamics, which provides an out-of-eq…
Recently, thermal Hall effect has been observed in the paramagnetic state of Volborthite, which consists of distorted Kagome layers with $S=1/2$ local moments. Despite the appearance of a magnetic order below $1 \, \mathrm{K}$, the response to external magnetic field and unusual properties of the paramagnetic state above $1 \, \mathrm{K}$ suggest possible realization of exotic quantum phases. Motivated by these discoveries, we investigate possible spin liquid phases with fermionic spinon excitations in a non-symmorphic version of the Kagome lattice, which belongs to the two-dimensional crystal…
Recent numerical studies of the $J_1$-$J_2$ model on a square lattice suggest a possible continuous phase transition between the Néel state and a gapped spin-liquid state with Z$_2$ topological order. We show that such a phase transition can be realized through two steps: First bring the Néel state to the U(1) deconfined quantum critical point, which has been studied in the context of Néel -- valence bond solid (VBS) state phase transition. Then condense the spinon pair -- skyrmion/antiskyrmion bound state, which carries both gauge charge and flux of the U(1) gauge field emerging at the deconf…
In this paper we construct fully symmetric wavefunctions for the spin-polarized fractional Chern insulators (FCI) and time-reversal-invariant fractional topological insulators (FTI) in two dimensions using the parton approach. We show that the lattice symmetry gives rise to many different FCI and FTI phases even with the same filling fraction $ν$ (and the same quantized Hall conductance $σ_{xy}$ in FCI case). They have different symmetry-protected topological orders, which are characterized by different projective symmetry groups. We mainly focus on FCI phases which are realized in a partially…
We point out that the Kitaev materials may not necessarily support Kitaev spin liquid. It is well-known that having a Kitaev term in the spin interaction is not the sufficient condition for the Kitaev spin liquid ground state. Many other spin liquids may be stabilized by the competing spin interactions of the systems. We thus explore the possibilities of non-Kitaev spin liquids in the honeycomb Kitaev materials. We carry out a systematic classification of gapped $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquids using the Schwinger boson representation for the spin variables. The presence of strong spin-orbit coupli…
The Kagome-lattice-based material, Volborthite, $\mathrm{Cu_3 V_2 O_7 (OH)_2 \cdot 2 H_2 O}$, has been considered as a promising platform for discovery of unusual quantum ground states due to the frustrated nature of spin interactions. Here we explore possible quantum spin liquid and magnetically ordered phases in a two-dimensional non-symmorphic lattice described by $p2gg$ layer space group, which is consistent with the spatial anisotropy of the spin model derived from density functional theory (DFT) for Volborthite. Using the projective symmetry group (PSG) analysis and Schwinger boson mean …
Motivated by recent experiments and density functional theory calculations on choloalite PbCuTe$_2$O$_6$, which possesses a Cu-based three-dimensional hyperkagome lattice, we propose and study a $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a hyperkagome lattice. In the classical limit, possible ground states are analyzed by two triangle rules, i.e., the "hyperkagome triangle rule" and the "isolated triangle rule," and classical Monte Carlo simulations are exploited to identify possible classical magnetic ordering and explore the phase diagram. In the quantum regime, Schwinger boson …
Recent experiments on the dipolar-octupolar pyrochlore compound Ce$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ indicate that it may realize a three-dimensional quantum spin liquid (QSL). In particular, the analyses of available data suggest that the system is in a region of parameter space, where the so-called $π$-flux $U(1)$ octupolar quantum spin ice (QSI) with an emergent photon could be realized. On the other hand, because the system is far from the perturbative classical spin ice regime, it is unclear whether the quantum ground state is primarily a coherent superposition of 2-in-2-out configurations as in the canonic…
A recent experiment has reported oscillations of the thermal conductivity of $α$-RuCl$_3$ driven by an in-plane magnetic field that are reminiscent of the quantum oscillations in metals. At first glance, these observations are consistent with the presence of the long-sought-after spinon Fermi surface state. Strikingly, however, the experiment also reported vanishing thermal Hall conductivity coexisting with the oscillations of the longitudinal one. Such absence of the thermal Hall effect must originate from crystalline symmetries of $α$-RuCl$_3$. But if the system was a traditional spinon ferm…
