The extreme frustration in the Kagome antiferromagnet makes it possible to realize a large number of closely competing magnetic phases either at the classical or the quantum level. Motivated by recent neutron scattering study on the Kagome antiferromagnet vesignieite BaCu$_{3}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$(OH)$_{2}$, we have made systematic investigation of the phase diagram of the classical and quantum $J_{1}-J_{3}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model defined on the Kagome lattice(KAFHM). While it is shown previously that a large antiferromagnetic exchange between the third-neighboring spins can drive an emergent $q=4$ Potts order through the order-by-disorder mechanism, it is elusive what will happen in the so called "grey region" where the Luttinger-Tisza criteria fails to predict the classical ordering pattern. Through extensive Monte Carlo simulation, we find that the "grey region" is characterized by competing emergent $q=3$ and $q=4$ Potts order, whose emergence are beyond the description of the conventional order-by-disorder mechanism. Our Schwinger Boson mean field calculation in the "grey region" confirms the existence of the Potts-3 order in the ground state of quantum $J_{1}-J_{3}$ KAFHM. The predicted Potts-3 state is found to take two different forms distinguished by their projective symmetry group character(PSG or quantum order), although they have exactly the same symmetry. A comparison with the exact diagonalization result on a 36-site cluster shows that the "grey region" may indeed host a nematic spin liquid ground state featuring an anisotropic ring structure around the $\mathbf{q}=0$ point in its spinon dispersion relation. We find that such "grey region" of extremely frustrated magnets should better be taken as the playground to study the rich competition between exotic emergent phases, rather than a burden on their theoretical analysis.
The unusual reentrant phenomenon is observed in the anisotropic 3-state Potts model on a gen- eralized Kagome lattice. By employing the linearized tensor renormalization group method, we find that the reentrance can appear in the region not only under a partial ordered phase as commonly known but also a phase without a local order parameter, which is uncovered to fall into the uni- versality of the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) type. The region of the reentrance depends strongly on the ratios of the next nearest couplings α = J2 /|J1 | and β = J3 /|J1 |. The phase diagrams in the plane of temperatu…
We theoretically study low-temperature properties of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with half-integer spin $S$ on the Kagome lattice with large trimerization. We have derived a low-energy effective model for general $S$ in terms of spin and nematicity operators in triangular units, and studied their low-temperature correlations for S=3/2 by classical Monte Carlo simulations. The previous study for the S=1/2 case [M. Ferrero et al., Phys. Rev. B 68, 214431 (2003)] reported a spin liquid state at low temperatures driven by a glassy behavior of isolated dimers and trimers of nematicities.…
Motivated by recent studies of three-state Potts nematic states in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene and doped-Bi$_2$Se$_3$, we analyze the impact of critical nematic fluctuations on the low energy properties of phonons. In this study we propose how to identify the three-state Potts nematic fluctuations by ultrasound attenuation. The Gaussian fluctuation analysis shows that the Landau damping term becomes isotropic due to fluctuations of the $C_{3}$-breaking bond-order, and the nemato-elastic coupling is also shown to be isotropic. These two features lead to an isotropic divergence of the t…
Optimizing translationally invariant infinite-Projected Entangled Pair States (iPEPS), we investigate the spin-2 Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) and spin-1 Heisenberg models on the Kagome lattice as a function of magnetic field. We found that the magnetization curves offer a wide variety of compressible and incompressible phases. Incompressible nematic phases breaking the lattice $C_3$ rotation -- for which we propose simple qualitative pictures -- give rise to magnetization plateaux at reduced magnetization $m_z=5/6$ and $m_z=1/3$ for spin-2 and spin-1, respectively, in addition to the $m_…
The ground state of the spin$-1/2$ kagome antiferromagnet remains uncertain despite decades of active research. Here we step aside from this debated question to address the ground-state nature of a related, and potentially just as rich, system made of corner-sharing triangles: the square-kagome lattice (SKL). Our work is motivated by the recent synthesis of a distorted SKL compound mentioned in [Morita & Tohyama, J. Phys. Soc. Japan 87, 043704 (2018)]. We have studied its spin$-1/2$ $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$ phase diagram with an unrestricted Schwinger boson mean-field theory (SBMFT). We show that, in a…
Identification, understanding, and manipulation of novel magnetic textures is essential for the discovery of new quantum materials for future spin-based electronic devices. In particular, materials that manifest a large response to external stimuli such as a magnetic field are subject to intense investigation. Here, we study the kagome-net magnet YMn$_{6}$Sn$_{6}$ by magnetometry, transport, and neutron diffraction measurements combined with first principles calculations. We identify a number of nontrivial magnetic phases, explain their microscopic nature, and demonstrate that one of them host…
We investigate the effect of spin-lattice coupling (SLC) on the magnetic properties of the classical kagome-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet (KHAF) using improved Monte Carlo updates. The lattice modes are represented by Einstein site phonons, which introduce effective further-neighbor spin interactions in addition to the nearest-neighbor biquadratic interactions. In the weak SLC, the macroscopically degenerate coplanar ground state remains at zero field, while a $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ ordered phase accompanied by a 1/3-magnetization plateau appears in external magnetic fields. In the st…
As in between liquid and crystal phases lies a nematic liquid crystal, which breaks rotation with preservation of translation symmetry, there is a nematic superfluid phase bridging a superfluid and a supersolid. The nematic order also emerges in interacting electrons and has been found to largely intertwine with multi-orbital correlation in high-temperature superconductivity, where Ising nematicity arises from a four-fold rotation symmetry $C_4$ broken down to $C_2$. Here we report an observation of a three-state ($\mathbb{Z}_3$) quantum nematic order, dubbed "Potts-nematicity", in a system of…
Addressing the nature of an unexpected smectic-A' phase in liquid crystal 54COOBC films, we perform large scale Monte Carlo simulations of a coupled hexatic-nematic XY model. The resulting finite-temperature phase diagram reveals a small region with composite Potts $\mathbb{Z}_3$ order above the vortex binding transition; this phase is characterized by relative hexatic-nematic ordering though both variables are disordered. The system develops algebraic hexatic and nematic order only at a lower temperature. This multi-step melting scenario agrees well with the experimental observations of a sha…
Magnetic frustration can lead to peculiar magnetic orderings that break a discrete symmetry of the lattice in addition to the fundamental magnetic symmetries (i.e., spin rotation invariance and time-reversal symmetry). In this work, we focus on frustrated quantum magnets and study the nature of the quantum phase transition between a paramagnet and a magnetically ordered state with broken threefold ($Z_3$) crystal rotation symmetry. We predict the transition to happen in two stages, giving rise to an intermediate nematic phase in which rotation symmetry is broken but the system remains magnetic…
Hexagonal Kagome lattice is a multiband system with a quadratic band crossing point, in contrast with honeycomb lattice with linear band crossing point, which has exotic correlated effect and can produce various novel quantum states. Here we investigate the phase diagram of the fermions on the hexagonal Kagome lattice as a function of interaction, temperature and lattice anisotropy, by combining the cellular dynamical mean-field theory with the continuous time quantum Monte Carlo method. For weak interaction, the quadratic band-crossing point is broken to linear band crossing point and the sys…
Motivated by the physical properties of Vesignieite BaCu$_3$V$_2$O$_8$(OH)$_2$, we study the $J_1-J_3$ Heisenberg model on the kagomé lattice, that is proposed to describe this compound for $J_1<0$ and $J_3\gg|J_1|$. The nature of the classical ground state and the possible phase transitions are investigated through analytical calculations and parallel tempering Monte Carlo simulations. For $J_1<0$ and $J_3>\frac{1+\sqrt{5}}4|J_1|$, the ground states are not all related by an Hamiltonian symmetry. Order appears at low temperature via the order by disorder mechanism, favoring colinear configura…
We study S=1 kagome antiferromagnets with isotropic Heisenberg exchange $J$ and strong easy axis single-ion anisotropy $D$. For $D \gg J$, the low-energy physics can be described by an effective $S=1/2$ $XXZ$ model with antiferromagnetic $J_z \sim J$ and ferromagnetic $J_\perp \sim J^2/D$. Exploiting this connection, we argue that non-trivial ordering into a "spin-nematic" occurs whenever $D$ dominates over $J$, and discuss its experimental signatures. We also study a magnetic field induced transition to a magnetization plateau state at magnetization 1/3 which breaks lattice translation symmet…
Electronic nematicity has been commonly observed in juxtaposition with unconventional superconductivity. Understanding the nature of the nematic state, as well as its consequence on the electronic band structure and superconductivity, has become a pivotal focus in condensed matter physics. Here we use spectroscopic imaging-scanning tunneling microscopy to visualize how the interacting quasiparticles organize themselves in the nematic state of kagome superconductor CsV$_{3-x}$Ti$_x$Sb$_5$, in which twofold symmetric (C$_2$) quasiparticle scattering interference of the vanadium kagome bands emer…
Fermi surface fluctuations and lattice instabilities in the 2D metallic kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ are elucidated via polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy. The presence of a weak electronic continuum in high-quality samples marks the cross-over into the charge-density-wave (CDW) ordered phase, while impurity-rich samples promote strong defect-induced electronic scattering processes that affect the coherence of the CDW phase. CDW-induced phonon anomalies appear below $T_{\mathrm{CDW}}$, with emergent $C2$ symmetry for one of the CDW amplitude modes, alluding to nematicity. In conju…
Owing to the unusual geometry of kagome lattices-lattices made of corner-sharing triangles-their electrons are useful for studying the physics of frustrated, correlated and topological quantum electronic states. In the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling, the magnetic and electronic structures of kagome lattices are further entangled, which can lead to hitherto unknown spin-orbit phenomena. Here we use a combination of vector-magnetic-field capability and scanning tunnelling microscopy to elucidate the spin-orbit nature of the kagome ferromagnet Fe3Sn2 and explore the associated exotic corr…
Superconductors with kagome lattices have been identified for over 40 years, with a superconducting transition temperature TC up to 7K. Recently, certain kagome superconductors have been found to exhibit an exotic charge order, which intertwines with superconductivity and persists to a temperature being one order of magnitude higher than TC. In this work, we use scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) to study the charge order in kagome superconductor RbV3Sb5. We observe both a 2x2 chiral charge order and nematic surface superlattices (predominantly 1x4). We find that the 2x2 charge order exhibits…
In transition metal compounds, due to the interplay of charge, spin, lattice and orbital degrees of freedom, many intertwined orders exist with close energies. One of the commonly observed states is the so-called nematic electron state, which breaks the in-plane rotational symmetry. This nematic state appears in cuprates, iron-based superconductor, etc. Nematicity may coexist, affect, cooperate or compete with other orders. Here we show the anisotropic in-plane electronic state and superconductivity in a recently discovered kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ by measuring $c$-axis resistivity with the …
The phase diagram of the XXZ spin-1 quantum magnet on the kagome lattice is studied for all cases where the $J_z$ coupling is antiferromagnetic. In the zero magnetic field case, the six previously introduced phases, found using various methods, are: the nondegenerate gapped photon phase which breaks no space symmetry or spin symmetry; the six-fold degenerate phase with plaquette order, which breaks both time reversal symmetry and translational symmetry; the "superfluid" (ferromagnetic) phase with an in-plane global U(1) symmetry broken, when $J_{xy} < 0$; the $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ order whe…
Motivated by the recent discovery of unconventional charge order, we develop a theory of electronically mediated charge density wave formation in the family of kagome metals $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A=$K,Rb,Cs). The intertwining of van Hove filling and sublattice interference suggests a three-fold charge density wave instability at T$_{\text{CDW}}$. From there, the charge order forming below T$_{\text{CDW}}$ can unfold into a variety of phases capable of exhibiting orbital currents and nematicity. We develop a Ginzburg Landau formalism to stake out the parameter space of kagome charge order. We find a…
We numerically study the spin-$1/2$ breathing kagome lattice. In this variation of the kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet, the spins belonging to upward and downward facing triangles have different coupling strengths. Using the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method and exact diagonalization, we show that the kagome antiferromagnet spin liquid is extremely robust to this anisotropy. Materials featuring this anisotropy -- and especially the recently studied vanadium compound $[{\mathrm{NH}}_{4}{]}_{2}[{\mathbf{C}}_{7}{\mathbf{H}}_{14}\mathbf{N}][{\mathbf{V}}_{7}{\mathbf{O}}_{6}{\math…
We consider Z2 spin liquids on the kagome lattice on the verge of a valence bond solid (VBS) transition, where vortex excitations carrying Z2 magnetic flux - so-called visons - condense. We show that these vison excitations can couple directly to the external electromagnetic field, even though they carry neither spin nor charge. This is possible via a magneto-elastic coupling mechanism recently identified by Potter et al and Hao. For the case of transitions to a 36-site unit cell VBS state the corresponding finite ac-conductivity has a specific power law frequency dependence, which is related …
Fractons are topological quasiparticles with limited mobility. While there exists a variety of models hosting these excitations, typical fracton systems require rather complicated many-particle interactions. Here, we discuss fracton behavior in the more common physical setting of classical kagome spin models with frustrated two-body interactions only. We investigate systems with different types of elementary spin degrees of freedom (three-state Potts, XY, and Heisenberg spins) which all exhibit characteristic subsystem symmetries and fracton-like excitations. The mobility constraints of isolat…
Motivated by recent reports of nematic order in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), we investigate the impact of the triangular moiré superlattice degrees of freedom on nematicity. In TBG, the nematic order parameter is not Ising-like, as it is the case in tetragonal crystals, but has a 3-state Potts character related to the threefold rotational symmetry ($C_{3z}$) of the moiré superlattice. We find that even in the presence of static strain that explicitly breaks the $C_{3z}$ symmetry, the system can still undergo a nematic-flop phase transition that spontaneously breaks in-plane twofold rotation…

We study numerically the spin-1/2 XXZ model in a field on an infinite Kagome lattice. We use different algorithms based on infinite Projected Entangled Pair States (iPEPS) for this, namely: (i) with simplex tensors and 9-site unit cell, and (ii) coarse-graining three spins in the Kagome lattice and mapping it to a square-lattice model with nearest-neighbor interactions, with usual PEPS tensors, 6- and 12-site unit cells. Similarly to our previous calculation at the SU(2)-symmetric point (Heisenberg Hamiltonian), for any anisotropy from the Ising limit to the XY limit, we also observe the emerg…
We study the zero-temperature phase diagram of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model with breathing anisotropy (i.e., with different coupling strength on the upward and downward triangles) on the kagome lattice. Our study relies on large scale tensor network simulations based on infinite projected entangled-pair state and infinite projected entangled-simplex state methods adapted to the kagome lattice. Our energy analysis suggests that the U(1) algebraic quantum spin-liquid (QSL) ground-state of the isotropic Heisenberg model is stable up to very large breathing anisotropy until it breaks do…
Spin ice, a peculiar thermal state of a frustrated ferromagnet on the pyrochlore lattice, has a finite entropy density and excitations carrying magnetic charge. By combining analytical arguments and Monte Carlo simulations, we show that spin ice on the two-dimensional kagome lattice orders in two stages. The intermediate phase has ordered magnetic charges and is separated from the paramagnetic phase by an Ising transition. The transition to the low-temperature phase is of the three-state Potts or Kosterlitz-Thouless type, depending on the presence of defects in charge order.
We consider hard-core bosons on the kagome lattice in the presence of short range repulsive interactions and focus particularly on the filling factor 1/3. In the strongly interacting limit, the low energy excitations can be described by the quantum fully packed loop coverings on the triangular lattice. Using a combination of tensor-product state based methods and exact diagonalization techniques, we show that the system has an extended Z2 topological liquid phase as well as a lattice nematic phase. The latter breaks lattice rotational symmetry. By tuning appropriate parameters in the model, we…

We present numerical evidence for the emergence of an extended valence bond solid (VBS) phase at $T=0$ in the kagome $S=1/2$ Heisenberg antiferromagnet with ferromagnetic further-neighbor interactions. The VBS is located at the boundary between two magnetically ordered regions and extends close to the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg point. It exhibits a diamond-like singlet covering pattern with a $12$-site unit-cell. Our results suggest the possibility of a direct, possibly continuous, quantum phase transition from the neighboring $\mathbf{q}=0$ coplanar magnetically ordered phase into the VBS ph…
