Recent experiments on geometrically frustrated kagome metal AV3Sb5 (A=K, Rb, Cs) have revealed the emergence of the charge loop current (cLC) order near the bond order (BO) phase. However, the origin of the cLC and its relation to other phases have been uncovered. Here, we discover a novel mechanism of the cLC state, by focusing on the BO phase common in kagome metals. The BO fluctuations in metals mediate the odd-parity particle-hole condensation, which drives the topological charge-current. This state is further stabilized by the finite electron-phonon coupling and the off-site Coulomb interaction. Furthermore, it is worth noting that the predicted cLC+BO phase gives rise to the Z3-nematic state in addition to the giant anomalous Hall effect. The present theory predicts the close relationship between the cLC, the BO, and the nematicity, which is significant to understand the cascade of quantum electron states in kagome metals.
Fermi surface fluctuations and lattice instabilities in the 2D metallic kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ are elucidated via polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy. The presence of a weak electronic continuum in high-quality samples marks the cross-over into the charge-density-wave (CDW) ordered phase, while impurity-rich samples promote strong defect-induced electronic scattering processes that affect the coherence of the CDW phase. CDW-induced phonon anomalies appear below $T_{\mathrm{CDW}}$, with emergent $C2$ symmetry for one of the CDW amplitude modes, alluding to nematicity. In conju…
We theoretically study low-temperature properties of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with half-integer spin $S$ on the Kagome lattice with large trimerization. We have derived a low-energy effective model for general $S$ in terms of spin and nematicity operators in triangular units, and studied their low-temperature correlations for S=3/2 by classical Monte Carlo simulations. The previous study for the S=1/2 case [M. Ferrero et al., Phys. Rev. B 68, 214431 (2003)] reported a spin liquid state at low temperatures driven by a glassy behavior of isolated dimers and trimers of nematicities.…
We investigate the effect of spin-lattice coupling (SLC) on the magnetic properties of the classical kagome-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet (KHAF) using improved Monte Carlo updates. The lattice modes are represented by Einstein site phonons, which introduce effective further-neighbor spin interactions in addition to the nearest-neighbor biquadratic interactions. In the weak SLC, the macroscopically degenerate coplanar ground state remains at zero field, while a $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ ordered phase accompanied by a 1/3-magnetization plateau appears in external magnetic fields. In the st…
Layered kagome-lattice materials with 3$d$ transition metals provide a fertile playground for studies on geometry frustration, band topology and other novel ordered states. A representative class of materials AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K, Rb, Cs) have been proved to possess various unconventional phases such as superconductivity, non-trivial $\mathbb{Z}_2$ band topology, and electronic nematicity, which are intertwined with multiple interlaced charge density waves (CDW). However, the interplay among these novel states and their mechanisms are still elusive. Recently, the discovery of isostructural titani…
Electronic nematicity has been commonly observed in juxtaposition with unconventional superconductivity. Understanding the nature of the nematic state, as well as its consequence on the electronic band structure and superconductivity, has become a pivotal focus in condensed matter physics. Here we use spectroscopic imaging-scanning tunneling microscopy to visualize how the interacting quasiparticles organize themselves in the nematic state of kagome superconductor CsV$_{3-x}$Ti$_x$Sb$_5$, in which twofold symmetric (C$_2$) quasiparticle scattering interference of the vanadium kagome bands emer…
In kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs), three-dimensional charge order (3D-CO) is the primary instability that sets the stage for other collective orders to emerge, including unidirectional stripe order, orbital flux order, electronic nematicity, and superconductivity. Here, we use high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to determine the microscopic structure of three-dimensional charge order (3D-CO) in AV3Sb5 and its interplay with superconductivity. Our approach is based on identifying an unusual splitting of kagome bands induced by 3D-CO, which provides a sensitive way to…
Unconventional symmetry-breaking phenomena due to nontrivial order parameters attract increasing attention in strongly correlated electron systems. Here, we predict theoretically the occurrence of nanoscale spontaneous spin-current, called the spin loop-current (sLC) order, as a promising origin of the pseudogap and electronic nematicity in cuprates. We reveal that the sLC is driven by the odd-parity electron-hole condensation that are mediated by transverse spin fluctuations around the pseudogap temperature $T^*$. At the same temperature, odd-parity magnon pair condensation occurs. The sLC or…
We report the observation of two-fold rotation symmetry in charge density wave (CDW) state in the newly discovered Kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. Below its CDW transition temperature ($T_{CDW}$), the polarization rotation of the reflected laser beam promptly emerges and increases close to about 1 mrad, and the rotation angle shows two-fold rotation symmetry. With femtosecond laser pulse pumping, the rotation angle can be easily suppressed and then recovers in several picoseconds accompanied with coherent oscillations. Significantly, the oscillations in the signal also experience a 180 de…
In transition metal compounds, due to the interplay of charge, spin, lattice and orbital degrees of freedom, many intertwined orders exist with close energies. One of the commonly observed states is the so-called nematic electron state, which breaks the in-plane rotational symmetry. This nematic state appears in cuprates, iron-based superconductor, etc. Nematicity may coexist, affect, cooperate or compete with other orders. Here we show the anisotropic in-plane electronic state and superconductivity in a recently discovered kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ by measuring $c$-axis resistivity with the …

Nematicity and magnetism are two key features in Fe-based superconductors, and their interplay is one of the most important unsolved problems. In FeSe, the magnetic order is absent below the structural transition temperature $T_{str}=90$K, in stark contrast that the magnetism emerges slightly below $T_{str}$ in other families. To understand such amazing material dependence, we investigate the spin-fluctuation-mediated orbital order ($n_{xz}\neq n_{yz}$) by focusing on the orbital-spin interplay driven by the strong-coupling effect, called the vertex correction. This orbital-spin interplay is v…
Motivated by the recent discovery of unconventional charge order, we develop a theory of electronically mediated charge density wave formation in the family of kagome metals $A$V$_3$Sb$_5$ ($A=$K,Rb,Cs). The intertwining of van Hove filling and sublattice interference suggests a three-fold charge density wave instability at T$_{\text{CDW}}$. From there, the charge order forming below T$_{\text{CDW}}$ can unfold into a variety of phases capable of exhibiting orbital currents and nematicity. We develop a Ginzburg Landau formalism to stake out the parameter space of kagome charge order. We find a…
Unconventional symmetry breaking due to nonlocal order parameters has attracted considerable attention in many strongly correlated metals. Famous examples are the nematic order in Fe-based superconductors and the star-of-David charge density order in kagome metals. Such exotic symmetry breaking in metals is a central issue of modern condensed matter physics, while its theoretical foundation is still unclear in comparison with the well-established theory of superconductivity. To overcome this difficulty, here we introduce the "form factor" that generalizes the nonlocal order parameter into the …

Elucidating the microscopic origin of nematic order in iron-based superconducting materials is important because the interactions that drive nematic order may also mediate the Cooper pairing. Nematic order breaks fourfold rotational symmetry in the iron plane, which is believed to be driven by either orbital or spin degrees of freedom. However, as the nematic phase often develops at a temperature just above or coincides with a stripe magnetic phase transition, experimentally determining the dominant driving force of nematic order is difficult. Here, we use neutron scattering to study structura…

The ground state of the spin$-1/2$ kagome antiferromagnet remains uncertain despite decades of active research. Here we step aside from this debated question to address the ground-state nature of a related, and potentially just as rich, system made of corner-sharing triangles: the square-kagome lattice (SKL). Our work is motivated by the recent synthesis of a distorted SKL compound mentioned in [Morita & Tohyama, J. Phys. Soc. Japan 87, 043704 (2018)]. We have studied its spin$-1/2$ $J_{1}$-$J_{2}$ phase diagram with an unrestricted Schwinger boson mean-field theory (SBMFT). We show that, in a…
Identification, understanding, and manipulation of novel magnetic textures is essential for the discovery of new quantum materials for future spin-based electronic devices. In particular, materials that manifest a large response to external stimuli such as a magnetic field are subject to intense investigation. Here, we study the kagome-net magnet YMn$_{6}$Sn$_{6}$ by magnetometry, transport, and neutron diffraction measurements combined with first principles calculations. We identify a number of nontrivial magnetic phases, explain their microscopic nature, and demonstrate that one of them host…
The discovery of multiple electronic orders in kagome superconductors AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs) provides a promising platform for exploring unprecedented emergent physics. Under moderate pressure (< 2.2 GPa), the triple-Q charge density wave (CDW) order is monotonically suppressed by pressure, while the superconductivity displays a two-dome-like behavior, suggesting an unusual interplay between superconductivity and CDW order. Given that time-reversal symmetry breaking and electronic nematicity have been revealed inside the triple-Q CDW phase, understanding this CDW order and its interplay with s…
In many unconventional superconductors, nematic quantum fluctuations are strongest where the critical temperature is highest, inviting the conjecture that nematicity plays an important role in the pairing mechanism. Recently, Ba$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$Ni$_2$As$_2$ has been identified as a tunable nematic system that provides an ideal testing ground for this proposition. We therefore propose several sharp empirical tests, supported by quantitative calculations in a simple model of Ba$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$Ni$_2$As$_2$. The most stringent predictions concern experiments under uniaxial strain, which has recently em…
We investigate the real-space profile of effective Coulomb interactions in correlated kagome materials. By particularizing to KV$_3$Sb$_5$, Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$, FeSn, and Ni$_3$In, we analyze representative cases that exhibit a large span of correlation-mediated phenomena, and contrast them to prototypical prevoskite transition metal oxides. From our constrained random phase approximation studies we find that the on-site interaction strength in kagome metals not only depends on the screening processes at high energy, but also on the low-energy hybriziation profile of the electronic density of st…
We study the ground state phase diagram of a two-dimensional kagome lattice spin-1/2 XY model (J) with a four-site ring exchange interaction (K) using quantum Monte Carlo simulations. We find that the superfluid phase, existing in the regime of small ring exchange, undergoes a direct transition to a Z_2 quantum spin liquid phase at (K/J)_c ~ 22, which is related to the phase proposed by Balents, Girvin and Fisher [Phys. Rev. B, 65 224412 (2002)]. The quantum phase transition between the superfluid and the spin liquid phase has exponents z and νfalling in the 3D XY universality class, making it…
