Fractons are topological quasiparticles with limited mobility. While there exists a variety of models hosting these excitations, typical fracton systems require rather complicated many-particle interactions. Here, we discuss fracton behavior in the more common physical setting of classical kagome spin models with frustrated two-body interactions only. We investigate systems with different types of elementary spin degrees of freedom (three-state Potts, XY, and Heisenberg spins) which all exhibit characteristic subsystem symmetries and fracton-like excitations. The mobility constraints of isolated fractons and bound fracton pairs in the three-state Potts model are, however, strikingly different compared to the known type-I or type-II fracton models. One may still explain these properties in terms of type-I fracton behavior and construct an effective low-energy tensor gauge theory when considering the system as a 2D cut of a 3D cubic lattice model. Our extensive classical Monte-Carlo simulations further indicate a crossover into a low temperature glassy phase where the system gets trapped in metastable fracton states. Moving on to XY spins, we find that in addition to fractons the system hosts fractional vortex excitations. As a result of the restricted mobility of both types of defects, our classical Monte-Carlo simulations do not indicate a Kosterlitz-Thouless transition but again show a crossover into a glassy low-temperature regime. Finally, the energy barriers associated with fractons vanish in the case of Heisenberg spins, such that defect states may continuously decay into a ground state. These decays, however, exhibit a power-law relaxation behavior which leads to slow equilibration dynamics at low temperatures.

We investigate the lattice dynamics in the spin-1/2 frustrated kagome compound herbertsmithite ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_2$ by a combination of infrared spectroscopy measurements and ab initio density functional theory calculations, and provide an unambiguous assignment of infrared-active lattice vibrations involving in-plane and out-of-plane atom displacements in the kagome layers. Upon cooling, non-thermal red-shifts and broadening appear specifically for modes that deform the kagome layer or affect the Cu-O-Cu bond angles, thus creating pronounced modifications of the antiferromagnetic exchange c…
In frustrated magnets the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction arising from spin-orbit coupling can induce a magnetic long-range order. Here, we report a theoretical prediction of thermal Hall effect in frustrated kagomé magnets such as KCr$_3$(OH)$_6$(SO4)$_2$ and KFe$_3$(OH)$_{6}$(SO$_{4}$)$_2$. The thermal Hall effects in these materials are induced by scalar spin chirality as opposed to DMI in previous studies. The scalar spin chirality originates from magnetic-field-induced chiral spin configuration due to non-coplanar spin textures, but in general it can be spontaneously developed as a macro…
Rb2SnCu3F12 has been studied using synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction, powder neutron diffraction and single crystal X-ray diffraction at a range of temperatures (100 to 500 K). A broad but clear phase transition, possibly of re-entrant character, is found to occur in the powder form, whereas the corresponding transition is not seen in the single crystal.
Spin dynamics of the spin-1/2 kagome lattice antiferromagnet Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ was studied using high-resolution, time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering. The flat mode, a characteristic of the frustrated kagome antiferromagnet, and the low-energy dispersive mode, which is dominated by magnons, can be well described by the linear spin-wave theory. However, the theory fails to describe three weakly dispersive modes between 9 and 14 meV. These modes could be attributed to two-spinon bound states, which decay into free spinons away from the zone center and at a high temperature, giving r…
The spin wave excitations of the ideal S=5/2 Kagome lattice antiferromagnet KFe3(OH)6(SO4)2 have been measured using high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering. We directly observe a flat mode which corresponds to a lifted "zero energy mode," verifying a fundamental prediction for the Kagome lattice. A simple Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian provides an excellent fit to our spin wave data. The antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction is the primary source of anisotropy and explains the low temperature magnetization and spin structure.
Motivated by recent experimental work on FeCrAs, we study the magnetic properties of classical spin models on the hexagonal Fe$_2$P/ZrNiAl structure (space group $P{\bar{6}}2m$). When both transition metal/rare earth sites carry magnetic moments, one has alternating distorted kagome and triangular lattice layers. Each point of the triangular lattice lies at the centre of a distorted hexagon and actually corresponds to three isolated magnetic atoms: a "trimer". We show that a simple model consisting of antiferromagnetically correlated Heisenberg spins on the frustrated distorted kagome lattice …
The magnetization and specific heat measurements have been performed on single-crystalline Gd_3_Ru_4_Al_12_ with a distorted Kagome lattice structure. This spin system is regarded as an antiferromagnetic triangular lattice of XY like Heisenberg model at low temperatures. The magnetic phase diagrams indicate the existence of frustration and Z_2_ degeneracy. The magnetization and specific heat imply the successive phase transitions with partial disorder and a T-shaped spin structure in the ground state.
We explore the phase diagram and the low-energy physics of three Heisenberg antiferromagnets which, like the kagome lattice, are networks of corner-sharing triangles but contain two sets of inequivalent short-distance resonance loops. We use a combination of exact diagonalization, analytical strong-coupling theories, and resonating valence bond approaches, and scan through the ratio of the two inequivalent exchange couplings. In one limit, the lattices effectively become bipartite, while at the opposite limit heavily frustrated nets emerge. In between, competing tunneling processes result in s…
We propose a general non-perturbative scheme that quantitatively maps the low-energy sector of spin-1/2 frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnets to effective Generalized Quantum Dimer Models. We develop the formal lattice independent frame and establish some important results on (i) the locality of the generated Hamiltonians (ii) how full resummations can be performed in this renormalization scheme. The method is then applied to the much debated kagome antiferromagnet for which a fully resummed effective Hamiltonian - shown to capture the essential properties and provide deep insights on the mic…
The SrCr$\_{9p}$Ga$\_{12-9p}$O$\_{19}$ and Ba$\_{2}$Sn$\_{2}$ZnGa$\_{10-7p}$Cr$\_{7p}$O$\_{22}$ compounds are two highly-frustrated magnets possessing a quasi-two-dimensional Kagomé bilayer of spin 3/2 chromium ions with antiferromagnetic interactions. Their magnetic susceptibility was measured by local Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and non-local (SQUID) techniques, and their low-temperature spin dynamics by Muon Spin Resonance. Consistent with the theoretical picture drawn for geometrically frustrated systems, the Kagomé bilayer is shown here to exhibit: (i) short range spin-spin correlations do…
Structural and magnetic properties of the geometrically frustrated layered compound YBaCo4O7 have been studied by magnetization and neutron diffraction. A layered type crystal structure, with alternating tetrahedral layers of Kagomé and triangular types, along the c axis (hexagonal symmetry, space group P63mc) has been found. The oxygen content of the present compound was determined by iodometric titration to be 7.00{\pm}0.01. Presence of a short-range antiferromagnetic ordering (below TN ~ 110 K) has been concluded from the appearance of an addition broad magnetic peak (at Q ~ 1.35 Å-1) in th…
We report muSR experiments on Mg{x}Cu{4-x}(OH)6Cl2 with x \sim 1, a new material isostructural to Herbertsmithite exhibiting regular kagome planes of spin 1/2 (Cu^{2+}), and therefore a candidate for a spin liquid ground state. We evidence the absence of any magnetic ordering down to 20 mK (\sim J/10^4). We investigate in detail the spin dynamics on well characterized samples in zero and applied longitudinal fields and propose a low T defect based interpretation to explain the unconventional dynamics observed in the quantum spin liquid phase.
Entanglement renormalization techniques are applied to numerically investigate the ground state of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on a kagome lattice. Lattices of N={36,144,inf} sites with periodic boundary conditions are considered. For the infinite lattice, the best approximation to the ground state is found to be a valence bond crystal (VBC) with a 36-site unit cell, compatible with a previous proposal. Its energy per site, E=-0.43221, is an exact upper bound and is lower than the energy of any previous (gapped or algebraic) spin liquid candidate for the ground state.
Strain applied to a condensed-matter system can be used to engineer its excitation spectrum via artificial gauge fields, or it may tune the system through transitions between different phases. Here we demonstrate that strain tuning of the ground state of otherwise highly degenerate frustrated systems can induce novel phases, both ordered and disordered. For the classical Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice, we show that weak triaxial strain reduces the degeneracies of the system, leading to a classical spin liquid with non-coplanar configurations, while stronger strain drives the …
We study the XXZ spin-one quantum magnet on the kagome lattice as an example where quantum fluctuations on highly degenerate classical ground states lead to various exotic quantum ground states. Previous studies have predicted several quantum phases, but different analytical approaches do not necessarily lead to the same physical picture. In this work, we use Quantum Monte Carlo computations to critically examine some of the predictions made in the string-net mean-field theory and the degenerate perturbation theory combined with duality analysis and effective field theory. It is found that the…
Time-domain magneto-THz spectroscopy is utilized to study the frustrated magnet averievite Cu$_{5-x}$Zn$_x$V$_2$O$_{10}$(CsCl). Pronounced THz resonances are observed in unsubstituted samples ($x=0$) when cooling below the onset of short-range magnetic correlations. The influence of external magnetic effects confirms the magnetic origin of these resonances. Increasing Zn substitution suppresses the resonances, as frustration effects dominate, reflecting the non-magnetic phases for $x> 0.25$ compounds. The temperature evolution of the THz spectra is complemented with electron spin resonance spe…
Topological magnon insulators in insulating Kagomé ferromagnets have been extensively studied in a series of papers. It has been established that Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is the key ingredient to observe a nontrivial topological magnon with edge modes. However, insulating antiferromagnets on the Kagomé lattice are frustrated systems considered as a playground for studying quantum spin liquid physics. In these systems the DMI can induce a coplanar but noncollinear magnetic orders with a $\mathbf{q}=0$ propagating wavevector. We show that topological magnon bands are absent in thi…
We find that the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the Kagome lattice with nearest neighboring exchange coupling(NN-KAFH) belongs to a continuous family of fully-frustrated Heisenberg model on the Kagome lattice, which has no preferred classical ordering pattern. The model within this family consists of the first, second and the third neighboring exchange coupling $J_{1}$, $J_{2}$, and $J_{3}$, with $J_{2}=J_{3}$. We find that when $-J_{1}\leq J_{2}=J_{3}\leq 0.2J_{1}$, the lowest band of $J(\mathbf{q})$, namely, the Fourier transform of the exchange coupling, is totally non-dispersive. Ex…
We present an extensive gallium NMR study of the geometrically frustrated kagome bi-layer compound SrCr_(9p)Ga_(12-9p)O_(19) (Cr^3+, S=3/2) over a broad Cr-concentration range (.72<p<.95). This allows us to probe locally the kagome bi-layer susceptibility and separate the intrinsic properties due to the geometric frustration from those related to the site dilution. Our major findings are: 1) The intrinsic kagome bi-layer susceptibility exhibits a maximum in temperature at 40-50 K and is robust to a dilution as high as ~20%. The maximum reveals the development of short range antiferromagnetic c…
We investigate the connection between highly frustrated kagome based Hamiltonians and a recently synthesized family of materials containing Ti3+ S=1/2 ions. Employing a combination of all electron density functional theory and numerical diagonalization techniques, we establish the Heisenberg Hamiltonians for the distorted kagome antiferromagnets Rb2NaTi3F12, Cs2NaTi3F12 and Cs2KTi3F12. We determine magnetization curves in excellent agreement with experimental observations. Our calculations successfully clarify the relationship between the experimental observations and the magnetization-plateau…
Kalmeyer-Laughlin (KL) chiral spin liquid (CSL) is a type of quantum spin liquid without time-reversal symmetry, and it is considered as the parent state of an exotic type of superconductivity--anyon superconductor. Such exotic state has been sought for more than twenty years, however it remains unclear whether it can exist in realistic system where time-reversal symmetry is breaking (T-breaking) spontaneously. By using the density matrix renormalization group, we show that KL CSL exists in a frustrated anisotropic kagome Heisenberg model (KHM), which has spontaneously T-breaking. We find that…
Optical conductivity measurements are combined with density functional theory calculations in order to understand the electrodynamic response of the frustrated Mott insulators Herbertsmithite $\mathrm{ZnCu_{3}(OH)_{6}Cl_{2}}$ and the closely-related kagome-lattice compound $\mathrm{Y_{3}Cu_{9}(OH)_{19}Cl_{8}}$. We identify these materials as charge-transfer rather than Mott-Hubbard insulators, similar to the high-$T_c$ cuprate parent compounds. The band edge is at 3.3 and 3.6 eV, respectively, establishing the insulating nature of these compounds. Inside the gap, we observe dipole-forbidden lo…
Magnetization, specific heat, and neutron scattering measurements were performed to study a magnetic transition in jarosite, a spin-5/2 kagome lattice antiferromagnet. When a magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the kagome plane, magnetizations in the ordered state show a sudden increase at a critical field H_c, indicative of the transition from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic states. This sudden increase arises as the spins on alternate kagome planes rotate 180 degrees to ferromagnetically align the canted moments along the field direction. The canted moment on a single kagome plane …
Transverse field Ising model is a common model in quantum magnetism and is often illustrated as an example for quantum phase transition. Its physical origin in quantum magnets, however, is actually not quite well-understood. The quantum mechanical properties of this model on frustrated systems are not well-understood either. We here clarify the physical origin, both extrinsic one and intrinsic one, for the transverse field of the quantum Ising model, and then explain the quantum effects in the Kagome system. We discuss the quantum plaquette order and the quantum phase transition out of this or…

We present $μ$SR experiments in the $S=3/2$ kagome bilayer compound Ba$_{2}$Sn$_{2}$ZnGa$_{10-7p}$Cr$_{7p}$O$_{22}$ (BSZCGO$(p)$) and compare it to the isostructural SrCr$_{9p}$Ga$_{12-9p}$O$_{19}$ (SCGO$(p)$), including for the latter new results for $p\geq0.89$. Quantum-dynamical low energy magnetic excitations are evidenced in this novel compound. We study the evolution of the muon relaxation rate with $p$, $T$ and field. A phenomenological model for the muon relaxation based on sporadic dynamics due to spin excitations in a singlet sea proposed by Uemura \emph{et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. \te…
The candidate magnetoelectric Pb3Mn7O15 has a structure consisting of 1/3 filled Kagome layers linked by ribbons of edge-sharing octahedra in the stacking direction. Previous reports have indicated a complex hexagonal-orthorhombic structural transition upon cooling to room temperature, although its origins are uncertain. Here both structures are revisited using a combination of neutron and synchrotron X-ray diffraction data. Large shifts of oxygen positions are detected which show that the interlayer sites and those which occupy voids in the kagome lattice are trivially charge ordered in both …
Magnetization, specific heat, and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements are carried out to clarify the low-energy excitations for the S = 1/2 polyhedral clusters {Mo$_{72}$V$_{30}$} and {W$_{72}$V$_{30}$}. The clusters provide unique model systems of Kagomé network on a quasi-sphere. The linear field variation of magnetization at low temperatures indicates that the ground state is singlet for both clusters. The temperature and the magnetic field dependence of specific heat shows a distinct difference between two clusters with differing structural symmetries. In {W$_{72}$V$_{30}$} with I$_…
Kagome-net, appearing in areas of fundamental physics, materials, photonic and cold-atom systems, hosts frustrated fermionic and bosonic excitations. However, it is extremely rare to find a system to study both fermionic and bosonic modes to gain insights into their many-body interplay. Here we use state-of-the-art scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to discover unusual electronic coupling to flat-band phonons in a layered kagome paramagnet. Our results reveal the kagome structure with unprecedented atomic resolution and observe the striking bosonic mode interacting with dispersive …
Spin ices are exotic phases of matter characterized by frustrated spins obeying local ice rules, in analogy with the electric dipoles in water ice. In two dimensions, one can similarly define ice rules for in-plane Ising-like spins arranged on a kagome lattice. These ice rules require each triangle plaquette to have a single monopole, and can lead to various unique orders and excitations. Using experimental and theoretical approaches including magnetometry, thermodynamic measurements, neutron scattering and Monte Carlo simulations, we establish HoAgGe as a crystalline (i.e. non-artificial) sys…
We report on the observation of a large topological Hall effect (THE) over a wide temperature region in a geometrically frustrated Fe3Sn2 magnet with a kagome-bilayer structure. We found that the magnitude of the THE resistivity increases with temperature and reaches -0.875 μΩ.cm at 380 K. Moreover, the critical magnetic fields with the change of THE are consistent with the magnetic structure transformation, which indicates that the real-space fictitious magnetic field is proportional to the formation of magnetic skyrmions in Fe3Sn2. The results strongly suggest that the large THE originates f…
Frustrated one-dimensional quantum spin systems are known to exhibit a variety of quantum ground states due to the effects of quantum fluctuations and frustrations. In a spin-1/2 kagome-strip chain, which is one of the frustrated one-dimensional spin systems, many quantum phases have been found. However, the magnetic phase diagrams of the kagome-strip chain under magnetic field have not been fully understood. We construct magnetic phase diagrams at 0, 1/5, 3/10, 1/3, 2/5, 7/15, 3/5, and 4/5 magnetization ratio in the kagome-strip chain and investigate magnetic properties in each phase using th…
We study the stability of some strongly frustrated antiferromagnetic spin lattices in high magnetic fields against lattice distortions. In particular, we consider a spin-s anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square-kagomé and kagomé lattices. The independent localized magnons embedded in a ferromagnetic environment, which are the ground state at the saturation field, imply lattice instabilities for appropriate lattice distortions fitting to the structure of the localized magnons. We discuss in detail the scenario of this spin-Peierls instability in high magnetic fields which essentia…
We investigate the ground state and finite-temperature properties of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on an infinite octa-kagome lattice by utilizing state-of-the-art tensor network-based numerical methods. It is shown that the ground state has a vanishing local magnetization and possesses a $1/2$-magnetization plateau with up-down-up-up spin configuration. A quantum phase transition at the critical coupling ratio $J_{d}/J_{t}=0.6$ is found. When $0<J_{d}/J_{t}<0.6$, the system is in a valence bond state, where an obvious zero-magnetization plateau is observed, implying a gapful spin ex…
Magnetic susceptibility, NMR, muSR, and inelastic neutron scattering measurements show that kapellasite, Cu3Zn(OH)6Cl2, a geometrically frustrated spin-1/2 kagome antiferromagnet polymorphous with the herbertsmithite mineral, is a gapless spin liquid with frustrated interactions showing unusual dynamic short-range correlations of non-coplanar cuboc2 type which persist down to 20 mK. The Hamiltonian is determined from a fit of a high-temperature series expansion to thermodynamical data. The experimental data are compared to theoretical calculations using the Schwinger-boson approach.
The anomalous Hall effect is investigated for ferromagnetic Fe3Sn2 single crystal with geometrically frustrated kagome bilayer of Fe. The scaling behavior between anomalous Hall resistivity rho_{xy}^{A} and longitudinal resistivity rho_{xx} is quadratic and further analysis implies that the AHE in Fe3Sn2 single crystal should be dominated by the intrinsic Karplus-Luttinger mechanism rather than extrinsic skew-scattering or side-jump mechanisms. Moreover, there is a sudden jump of anomalous Hall conductivity sigma_{xy}^{A} appearing at about 100 K where the spin-reorientation transition from th…
Lattice-coupled antiferromagnetic spin model is analyzed for a number of frustrated lattices: triangular, Kagome, and pyrochlore. In triangular and Kagome lattices where ground state spins are locally ordered, the spin-lattice interaction does not lead to a static deformation of the lattice. In the pyrochlore structure, spin-lattice coupling supports a picture of the hexagon spin cluster proposed in the recent experiment[S. H. Lee et al. Nature, 418, 856 (2002)]. Through spin-lattice interaction a uniform contraction of the individual hexagons in the pyrochlore lattice can take place and reduc…
Layered kagome-lattice 3d transition metals are emerging as an exciting platform to explore the frustrated lattice geometry and quantum topology. However, the typical kagome electronic bands, characterized by sets of the Dirac-like band capped by a phase-destructive flat band, have not been clearly observed, and their orbital physics are even less well investigated. Here, we present close-to-textbook kagome bands with orbital differentiation physics in CoSn, which can be well described by a minimal tight-binding model with single-orbital hopping in Co kagome lattice. The capping flat bands wit…
We report on the low-energy dynamics in the kagome antiferromagnet CaCu$_3$(OD)$_6$Cl$_2\cdot0.6$D$_2$O (Ca-kapellasite) as studied by use of $^2$D-NMR measurements. Previous $^{35}$Cl-NMR measurements revealed that the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) shows two peaks at temperatures, $T^{\ast} = 7.2$ K and $T_s \simeq 25$ K. While the low-temperature peak at $T^{\ast}$ is ascribed to the critical fluctuations near the long-range magnetic ordering, the origin of the high-temperature peak has not been fully understood. From the $1/T_1$ measurements on the D sites at the OD groups …
For a class of frustrated spin lattices including the kagome lattice we construct exact eigenstates consisting of several independent, localized one-magnon states and argue that they are ground states for high magnetic fields. If the maximal number of local magnons scales with the number of spins in the system, which is the case for the kagome lattice, the effect persists in the thermodynamic limit and gives rise to a macroscopic jump in the zero-temperature magnetization curve just below the saturation field. The effect decreases with increasing spin quantum number and vanishes in the classic…
Determining ground states of correlated electron systems is fundamental to understanding novel phenomena in condensed matter physics. A difficulty, however, arises in a geometrically frustrated system in which the incompatibility between the global topology of an underlying lattice and local spin interactions gives rise to macroscopically degenerate ground states, potentially prompting the emergence of quantum spin states, such as resonating valence bond (RVB) and valence bond solid (VBS). Although theoretically proposed to exist in a kagome lattice -- one of the most highly frustrated lattice…
Recently, two consecutive phase transitions were observed, upon cooling, in an antiferromagnetic spinel GeNi$_2$O$_4$ at $T_{N1}=12.1$ K and $T_{N2}=11.4$ K, respectively \cite{matsuno, crawford}. Using unpolarized and polarized elastic neutron scattering we show that the two transitions are due to the existence of frustrated minority spins in this compound. Upon cooling, at $T_{N1}$ the spins on the $<111>$ \kagome planes order ferromagnetically in the plane and antiferromagnetically between the planes (phase I), leaving the spins on the $<111>$ triangular planes that separate the \kagome pla…
Quantum spin-1/2 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet is the representative frustrated system possibly hosting a spin liquid. Clarifying the nature of this elusive topological phase is a key challenge in condensed matter, however, even identifying it still remains unsettled. Here, we apply a magnetic field and discover a series of spin gapped phases appearing at five different fractions of magnetization by means of grand canonical density matrix renormalization group, an unbiased state-of-art numerical technique. The magnetic field dopes magnons and first gives rise to a possible Z3 spin liquid p…
We investigate analytically and numerically the classical ground states of frustrated Heisenberg models on pyrochlore and kagome lattices in zero and finite magnetic fields. Each model has a wide region in the microscopic parameter space, where the propagation vector is turned to a commensurate position equal to a half of the reciprocal lattice vector with a nontrivial star. Within these regions the zero-field ground states for both models correspond to noncoplanar triple-k spin configurations. A universal appearance of the 3-k states can be related to the spin-space dimensionality. A strong m…
We study the quantum phase diagram of a system of hard-core bosons on the Kagome lattice with nearest-neighbor repulsive interactions, for arbitrary densities, by means of the hierarchical mean field theory and exact diagonalization techniques. This system is isomorphic to the spin S=1/2 XXZ model in presence of an external magnetic field, a paradigmatic example of frustrated quantum magnetism. In the non-frustrated regime, we find two crystal phases at densities 1/3 and 2/3 that melt into a superfluid phase when increasing the hopping amplitude, in semi-quantitative agreement with quantum Mon…
Frustrated itinerant ferromagnets, with non-collinear static spin structures, are an exciting class of material as their spin chirality can introduce a Berry phase in the electronic scattering and lead to exotic electronic phenomena such as the anomalous Hall effect (AHE). This study presents a reexamination of the magnetic properties of Fe$_3$Sn$_2$, a metallic ferromagnet, based on the 2-dimensional kagome bilayer structure. Previously thought of as a conventional ferromagnet, we show using a combination of SQUID measurements, symmetry analysis and powder neutron diffraction, that Fe$_3$Sn$_…
muSR experiments on the geometrically frustrated spinel oxide, Li2Mn2O4, show the development of spin correlations over a range of length scales with decreasing temperature. Increased relaxation below 150 K is consistent with the onset of spin correlations. Below 50 K, spin order on a length scale, which is long range for the muSR probe, appears abruptly in temperature, consistent with prior neutron diffraction results. The oscillations in the zero field asymmetry are analyzed using a three frequency model. By locating the muon site this is shown to be consistent with the unexpected 2D q = roo…
We report results from spin trimer-based cluster quantum Monte Carlo simulations for the thermodynamic properties of two-dimensional frustrated quantum antiferromagnets that are composed of weakly-coupled three-spin (trimer) clusters. In particular, we consider the spin-1/2 kagome lattice with a strong breathing distortion, and the triangle-square lattice model proposed previously for the cuprate La${}_4$Cu${}_3$MoO${}_{12}$. For both cases, we demonstrate that an appropriately chosen trimer-based computational basis allows us to significantly reduce the quantum Monte Carlo sign problem down t…
Frustrated spin systems on Kagome lattices have long been considered to be a promising candidate for realizing exotic spin liquid phases. Recently, there has been a lot of renewed interest in these systems with the discovery of materials such as Volborthite and Herbertsmithite that have Kagome like structures. In the presence of an external magnetic field, these frustrated systems can give rise to magnetization plateaus of which the plateau at $m=\frac{1}{3}$ is considered to be the most prominent. Here we study the problem of the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 quantum XXZ Heisenberg model on a Ka…
We report the local probe investigation of a frustrated antiferromagnet Pr$_3$BWO$_9$ with the distorted kagome lattice. Absence of magnetic order or spin freezing is indicated by the spectral analysis down to 0.3 K and specific heat measurements down to 0.09 K. The Knight shifts show an upturn behavior with the sample cooling down, which is further suppressed by external field. For the spin dynamics, gapped spin excitation is observed from the temperature dependence of spin-lattice relaxation rates, with the gap size proportional to the applied magnetic field intensity. Comparatively, an unex…
