We study multi-dimensional normal approximations on the Poisson space by means of Malliavin calculus, Stein's method and probabilistic interpolations. Our results yield new multi-dimensional central limit theorems for multiple integrals with respect to Poisson measures -- thus significantly extending previous works by Peccati, Solé, Taqqu and Utzet. Several explicit examples (including in particular vectors of linear and non-linear functionals of Ornstein-Uhlenbeck Lévy processes) are discussed in detail.
We prove that homogenous sums inside a fixed discrete Poisson chaos are universal with respect to normal approximations. This result parallels some recent findings, in a Gaussian context, by Nourdin, Peccati and Reinert (2010). As a by-product of our analysis, we provide some refinements of the CLTs for random variables on the Poisson space proved by Peccati, Solé, Taqqu and Utzet (2010), and by Peccati and Zheng (2010).
Functional limit theorems are presented for the rescaled occupation time fluctuations process of a critical finite variance branching particle system in $R^d$ with symmetric a-stable motion starting off from either a standard Poisson random field or from the equilibrium distribution for intermediate dimensions a<d<2a. The limit processes are determined sub-fractional and fractional Brownian motion respectively.
We investigate the high-dimensional asymptotic distributional behavior of the $\mathbf{f}$-vector of a random Vietoris-Rips complex, that is generated over a stationary Poisson point process in $[-\frac{1}{2}, \frac{1}{2}]^d$ as the space dimension and the intensity tend to infinity while the radius parameter tends to zero simultaneously.
Continuing the analysis initiated in Lachiéze-Rey and Peccati (2011), we use contraction operators to study the normal approximation of random variables having the form of a U-statistic written on the points in the support of a random Poisson measure. Applications are provided: to boolean models, and coverage of random networks.
We study the asymptotic edge statistics of the Gaussian $β$-ensemble, a collection of $n$ particles, as the inverse temperature $β$ tends to zero as $n$ tends to infinity. In a certain decay regime of $β$, the associated extreme point process is proved to converge in distribution to a Poisson point process as $n\to +\infty$. We also extend a well known result on Poisson limit for Gaussian extremes by showing the existence of an edge regime that we did not find in the literature.
We construct a tree-based dependence structure for the representation of binomial, Poisson and Gaussian random vectors having a given covariance matrix, using sums of independent random variables. This construction allows us to characterize the supermodular ordering of such random vectors via the componentwise ordering of their covariance matrices. Our method relies on the representation of dependent components using binary trees on the discrete $d$-dimensional hypercube $C_d$, and on Möbius inversion techniques. In the case of Poisson random vectors this approach involves Lévy measures on $C_…
We construct a probabilistic model for the number of divisors of a random uniform integer that converges in the mod-Poisson sense to the same limiting function as its original counterpart, the one arising in the Sathe-Selberg theorem. This construction involves a conditioning and gives an alternative perspective to the usual paradigm of "hybrid product" models developed by Gonek, Hughes and Keating in the case of the Riemann Zeta function.
Limit theorems are presented for the rescaled occupation time fluctuation process of a critical finite variance branching particle system in $\mathbb{R}^{d}$ with symmetric $α$-stable motion starting off from either a standard Poisson random field or the equilibrium distribution for critical $d=2α$ and large $d>2α$ dimensions. The limit processes are generalised Wiener processes. The obtained convergence is in space-time, finite-dimensional distributions sense. With the addtional assumption on the branching law we obtain functional convergence.
We consider two independent Gaussian processes that admit a representation in terms of a stochastic integral of a deterministic kernel with respect to a standard Wiener process. In this paper we construct two families of processes, from a unique Poisson process, the finite dimensional distributions of which converge in law towards the finite dimensional distributions of the two independent Gaussian processes. As an application of this result we obtain families of processes that converge in law towards fractional Brownian motion and sub-fractional Brownian motion.
We study the normal approximation of functionals of Poisson measures having the form of a finite sum of multiple integrals. When the integrands are nonnegative, our results yield necessary and sufficient conditions for central limit theorems. These conditions can always be expressed in terms of contraction operators or, equivalently, fourth cumulants. Our findings are specifically tailored to deal with the normal approximation of the geometric $U$-statistics introduced by Reitzner and Schulte (2011). In particular, we shall provide a new analytic characterization of geometric random graphs who…
We prove a Poisson limit theorem in the total variation distance of functionals of a general Poisson point process using the Malliavin-Stein method. Our estimates only involve first and second order difference operators and are closely related to the corresponding bounds for the normal approximation in the Wasserstein distance by Last, Peccati and Schulte (2016). As an application of this Poisson limit theorem, we consider a stationary Poisson point process in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and connect any two points whenever their distance is less than or equal to a prescribed distance parameter. This constr…
Using Malliavin operators together with an interpolation technique inspired by Arratia, Goldstein and Gordon (1989), we prove a new inequality on the Poisson space, allowing one to measure the distance between the laws of a general random vector, and of a target random element composed of Gaussian and Poisson random variables. Several consequences are deduced from this result, in particular: (1) new abstract criteria for multidimensional stable convergence on the Poisson space, (2) a class of mixed limit theorems, involving both Poisson and Gaussian limits, (3) criteria for the asymptotic inde…
In this work, we prove a shape theorem for Poisson cylinders and give a power law bound on surface fluctuations. We prove that for any $a \in (1/2, 1)$, conditioned on the origin being in the set of cylinders, every point in this set, whose Euclidean norm is less than $R$, lies at an internal distance less than $R+O(R^a)$ from the origin.
In a previous paper, the authors introduced an approach to prove that the statistics of the extremes of a log-correlated Gaussian field converge to a Poisson-Dirichlet variable at the level of the Gibbs measure at low temperature and under suitable test functions. The method is based on showing that the model admits a one-step replica symmetry breaking in spin glass terminology. This implies Poisson-Dirichlet statistics by general spin glass arguments. In this note, this approach is used to prove Poisson-Dirichlet statistics for the two-dimensional discrete Gaussian free field, where boundary …
Let $μ_{g}$ and $μ_{p}$ denote the Gaussian and Poisson measures on ${\Bbb R}$, respectively. We show that there exists a unique measure $\widetildeμ_{g}$ on ${\Bbb C}$ such that under the Segal-Bargmann transform $S_{μ_g}$ the space $L^2({\Bbb R},μ_g)$ is isomorphic to the space ${\cal H}L^2({\Bbb C}, \widetildeμ_{g})$ of analytic $L^2$-functions on ${\Bbb C}$ with respect to $\widetildeμ_{g}$. We also introduce the Segal-Bargmann transform $S_{μ_p}$ for the Poisson measure $μ_{p}$ and prove the corresponding result. As a consequence, when $μ_{g}$ and $μ_{p}$ have the same variance, $L^2({\Bb…
In this paper, we give an upper bound for a probabilistic distance between a Gaussian vector and a vector of U-statistics of Poisson point processes by applying Malliavin-Stein inequality on the Poisson space.
A fluctuation theory and, in particular, a theory of scale functions is developed for upwards skip-free Lévy chains, i.e. for right-continuous random walks embedded into continuous time as compound Poisson processes. This is done by analogy to the spectrally negative class of Lévy processes -- several results, however, can be made more explicit/exhaustive in our compound Poisson setting. In particular, the scale functions admit a linear recursion, of constant order when the support of the jump measure is bounded, by means of which they can be calculated -- some examples are considered.
We compute explicit upper bounds on the distance between the law of a multivariate Gaussian distribution and the joint law of wavelets/needlets coefficients based on a homogeneous spherical Poisson field. In particular, we develop some results from Peccati and Zheng (2011), based on Malliavin calculus and Stein's methods, to assess the rate of convergence to Gaussianity for a triangular array of needlet coefficients with growing dimensions. Our results are motivated by astrophysical and cosmological applications, in particular related to the search for point sources in Cosmic Rays data.
Consider a stationary Poisson point process in $\mathbb{R}^d$ and connect any two points whenever their distance is less than or equal to a prescribed distance parameter. This construction gives rise to the well known random geometric graph. The number of edges of this graph is counted that have midpoint in the $d$-dimensional unit ball. A quantitative central limit theorem for this counting statistic is derived, as the space dimension $d$ and the intensity of the Poisson point process tend to infinity simultaneously.
Peccati, Sole, Taqqu, and Utzet recently combined Stein's method and Malliavin calculus to obtain a bound for the Wasserstein distance of a Poisson functional and a Gaussian random variable. Convergence in the Wasserstein distance always implies convergence in the Kolmogorov distance at a possibly weaker rate. But there are many examples of central limit theorems having the same rate for both distances. The aim of this paper is to show this behaviour for a large class of Poisson functionals, namely so-called U-statistics of Poisson point processes. The technique used by Peccati et al. is modif…
The theory of sparse stochastic processes offers a broad class of statistical models to study signals. In this framework, signals are represented as realizations of random processes that are solution of linear stochastic differential equations driven by white Lévy noises. Among these processes, generalized Poisson processes based on compound-Poisson noises admit an interpretation as random L-splines with random knots and weights. We demonstrate that every generalized Lévy process-from Gaussian to sparse-can be understood as the limit in law of a sequence of generalized Poisson processes. This …
In arXiv:1410.7268v3, the authors consider eigenvalues of overlapping Wishart matrices and prove that its fluctuations asymptotically convergence to the Gaussian free field. In this brief note, their result is extended to show that when the matrix entries undergo stochastic evolution, the fluctuations asymptotically converge to a three-dimensional Gaussian field, which has an explicit contour integral formula. This is analogous to the result of arXiv:1011.3544 for stochastic Wigner matrices.
The paper describes the global limiting behavior of Gaussian beta ensembles where the parameter $β$ is allowed to vary with the matrix size $n$. In particular, we show that as $n \to \infty$ with $nβ\to \infty$, the empirical distribution converges weakly to the semicircle distribution, almost surely. The Gaussian fluctuation around the limit is then derived by a martingale approach.
We study the limiting behavior of Gaussian beta ensembles in the regime where $βn = const$ as $n \to \infty$. The results are (1) Gaussian fluctuations for linear statistics of the eigenvalues, and (2) Poisson convergence of the bulk statistics. (2) is an alternative proof of the result by F.~Benaych-Georges and S.~Péché (2015) with the explicit form of the intensity measure.
In this paper, we prove a local limit theorem for the ratio of the Poisson distribution to the Gaussian distribution with the same mean and variance, using only elementary methods (Taylor expansions and Stirling's formula). We then apply the result to derive an upper bound on the Le Cam distance between Poisson and Gaussian experiments, which gives a complete proof of the sketch provided in the unpublished set of lecture notes by Pollard (2010), who uses a different approach. We also use the local limit theorem to derive the asymptotics of the variance for Bernstein c.d.f. and density estimato…
We study the statistics of the extremes of a discrete Gaussian field with logarithmic correlations at the level of the Gibbs measure. The model is defined on the periodic interval $[0,1]$, and its correlation structure is nonhierarchical. It is based on a model introduced by Bacry and Muzy [Comm. Math. Phys. 236 (2003) 449-475] (see also Barral and Mandelbrot [Probab. Theory Related Fields 124 (2002) 409-430]), and is similar to the logarithmic Random Energy Model studied by Carpentier and Le Doussal [Phys. Rev. E (3) 63 (2001) 026110] and more recently by Fyodorov and Bouchaud [J. Phys. A 41 …
We study the Schrödinger equation driven by a weak Brownian forcing, and derive Gaussian fluctuations in the form of a time-inhomogeneous Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process. As a result, when evaluated at a fixed frequency, the intensity of the incoherent wave is of exponential distribution.
Building on earlier work introducing the notion of "mod-Gaussian" convergence of sequences of random variables, which arises naturally in Random Matrix Theory and number theory, we discuss the analogue notion of "mod-Poisson" convergence. We show in particular how it occurs naturally in analytic number theory in the classical Erdős-Kác Theorem. In fact, this case reveals deep connections and analogies with conjectures concerning the distribution of L-functions on the critical line, which belong to the mod-Gaussian framework, and with analogues over finite fields, where it can be seen as a zero…
We study the Circular and Jacobi $β$-Ensembles and prove Gaussian fluctuations for the number of points in one or more intervals in the macroscopic scaling limit.
We show Poisson statistics for random band matrices which diagonal entries have Gaussian components. These components are possibly as small as $n^{-\varepsilon}$. Particularly, our result is applicable for a band matrix cut from the GUE with the band width satisfying $w^{3.5}<<n$. A uniform upper bound of the averaged density of states (DOS) is obtained for complex deformed Gaussian band matrices with arbitrary $w$. A lower estimate of the DOS is also proven for arbitrary $w$ in a certain class of band matrices.
Many low temperature disordered systems are expected to exhibit Poisson-Dirichlet (PD) statistics. In this paper, we focus on the case when the underlying disorder is a logarithmically correlated Gaussian process $ϕ_N$ on the box $[-N,N]^d\subset\mathbb{Z}^d$. Canonical examples include branching random walk, $*$-scale invariant fields, with the central example being the two dimensional Gaussian free field (GFF), a universal scaling limit of a wide range of statistical mechanics models. The corresponding Gibbs measure obtained by exponentiating $β$ (inverse temperature) times $ϕ_N$ is a discre…
We prove the two dimensional KPZ equation with a logarithmically tuned nonlinearity and a small coupling constant, scales to the Edwards-Wilkinson equation with an effective variance.
The definition and the properties of a Gaussian point distribution, in contrast to the well-known properties of a Gaussian random field are discussed. Constraints for the number density and the two-point correlation function arise. A simple method for the simulation of this so-called Gauss-Poisson point process is given and illustrated with an example. The comparison of the distribution of galaxies in the PSCz catalogue with the Gauss-Poisson process underlines the importance of higher-order correlation functions for the description for the galaxy distribution. The construction of the Gauss-Po…
We study the classical XY model in bounded domains of $\mathbb{Z}^{d}$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We prove that when the temperature goes to zero faster than a certain rate as the lattice spacing goes to zero, the fluctuation field converges to a standard Gaussian white noise. This and related results also apply to a large class of gradient field models.
The Gaussian entire function is a random entire function, characterised by a certain invariance with respect to isometries of the plane. We study the fluctuations of the increment of the argument of the Gaussian entire function along planar curves. We introduce an inner product on finite formal linear combinations of curves (with real coefficients), that we call the signed length, which describes the limiting covariance of the increment. We also establish asymptotic normality of fluctuations.
