We study the normal approximation of functionals of Poisson measures having the form of a finite sum of multiple integrals. When the integrands are nonnegative, our results yield necessary and sufficient conditions for central limit theorems. These conditions can always be expressed in terms of contraction operators or, equivalently, fourth cumulants. Our findings are specifically tailored to deal with the normal approximation of the geometric $U$-statistics introduced by Reitzner and Schulte (2011). In particular, we shall provide a new analytic characterization of geometric random graphs whose edge-counting statistics exhibit asymptotic Gaussian fluctuations, and describe a new form of Poisson convergence for stationary random graphs with sparse connections. In a companion paper, the above analysis is extended to general $U$-statistics of marked point processes with possibly rescaled kernels.
We obtain Stein approximation bounds for stochastic integrals with respect to a Poisson random measure over ${\Bbb R}^d$, $d\geq 2$. This approach relies on third cumulant Edgeworth-type expansions based on derivation operators defined by the Malliavin calculus for Poisson random measures. The use of third cumulants can exhibit faster convergence rates than the standard Berry-Esseen rate for some sequences of Poisson stochastic integrals.
We show that the chaos representation of some Compound Poisson Type processes displays an underlying intrinsic combinatorial structure, partly independent of the chosen process. From the computational viewpoint, we solve the arising combinatorial complexity by means of the moments/cumulants duality for the laws of the corresponding processes, themselves measures on distributional spaces, and provide a combinatorial interpretation of the associated 'extended' Fock spaces. From the theoretical viewpoint, in the case of the Gamma measure, we trace back such complexity to its 'simplicial part', i.…
In this paper, we derive cumulant bounds for subgraph counts and power-weighted edge length in a class of spatial random networks known as weighted random connection models. This involves dealing with long-range spatial correlations induced by the profile function and the weight distribution. We start by deriving the bounds for the classical case of a Poisson vertex set, and then provide extensions to $α$-determinantal processes.
This survey provides a unified discussion of multiple integrals, moments, cumulants and diagram formulae associated with functionals of completely random measures. Our approach is combinatorial, as it is based on the algebraic formalism of partition lattices and Möbius functions. Gaussian and Poisson measures are treated in great detail. We also present several combinatorial interpretations of some recent CLTs involving sequences of random variables belonging to a fixed Wiener chaos.
The convex hull generated by the restriction to the unit ball of a stationary Poisson point process in the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space is considered. By establishing sharp bounds on cumulants, exponential estimates for large deviation probabilities are derived and the relative error in the central limit theorem on a logarithmic scale is investigated for a large class of key geometric characteristics. This includes the number of lower-dimensional faces and the intrinsic volumes of the random polytopes. Furthermore, moderate deviation principles for the spatial empirical measures induced by …
We propose an algorithm for the closed-form recursive computation of joint moments and cumulants of all orders for k-hop counts in the 1D unit disk random graph model with Poisson distributed vertices. Our approach uses decompositions of k-hop counts into multiple Poisson stochastic integrals. As a consequence, using the Stein method we derive Berry-Esseen bounds for the asymptotic convergence of renormalized k-hop path counts to the normal distribution as the density of Poisson vertices tends to infinity. Computer codes for the recursive symbolic computation of moments and cumulants are provi…
We study the obtainment of closed-form formulas for the distribution of the jumps of a doubly-stochastic Poisson process. The problem is approached in two ways. On the one hand, we translate the problem to the computation of multiple derivatives of the Hazard process cumulant generating function; this leads to a closed-form formula written in terms of Bell polynomials. On the other hand, for Hazard processes driven by Lévy processes, we use Malliavin calculus in order to express the aforementioned distributions in an appealing recursive manner. We outline the potential application of these res…
Continuing the analysis initiated in Lachiéze-Rey and Peccati (2011), we use contraction operators to study the normal approximation of random variables having the form of a U-statistic written on the points in the support of a random Poisson measure. Applications are provided: to boolean models, and coverage of random networks.
The random convex hull of a Poisson point process in $\mathbb{R}^d$ whose intensity measure is a multiple of the standard Gaussian measure on $\mathbb{R}^d$ is investigated. The purpose of this paper is to invent a new viewpoint on these Gaussian polytopes that is based on cumulants and the general large deviation theory of Saulis and Statulevičius. This leads to new and powerful concentration inequalities, moment bounds, Marcinkiewicz-Zygmund-type strong laws of large numbers, central limit theorems and moderate deviation principles for the volume and the face numbers. Corresponding results a…
We are concerned with exploring the probabilities of first order statements for Galton-Watson trees with $Poisson(c)$ offspring distribution. Fixing a positive integer $k$, we exploit the $k$-move Ehrenfeucht game on rooted trees for this purpose. Let $Σ$, indexed by $1 \leq j \leq m$, denote the finite set of equivalence classes arising out of this game, and $D$ the set of all probability distributions over $Σ$. Let $x_{j}(c)$ denote the true probability of the class $j \in Σ$ under $Poisson(c)$ regime, and $\vec{x}(c)$ the true probability vector over all the equivalence classes. Then we are…
We study random trees which are invariant in law under the operation of contracting each edge independently with probability $p\in(0,1)$. We show that all such trees can be constructed through Poissonian sampling from a certain class of random measured $\R$-trees satisfying a natural scale invariance property. This has connections to exchangeable partially ordered sets, real-valued self-similar increasing processes and quasi-stationary distributions of Galton--Watson processes.
We prove necessary and sufficient conditions for the asymptotic normality of multiple integrals with respect to a Poisson measure on a general measure space, expressed both in terms of norms of contraction kernels and of variances of carré-du-champ operators. Our results substantially complete the fourth moment theorems recently obtained by Döbler and Peccati (2018) and Döbler, Vidotto and Zheng (2018). An important tool for achieving our goals is a novel product formula for multiple integrals under minimal conditions.
This paper deals with sequences of random variables belonging to a fixed chaos of order $q$ generated by a Poisson random measure on a Polish space. The problem is investigated whether convergence of the third and fourth moment of such a suitably normalized sequence to the third and fourth moment of a centred Gamma law implies convergence in distribution of the involved random variables. A positive answer is obtained for $q=2$ and $q=4$. The proof of this four moments theorem is based on a number of new estimates for contraction norms. Applications concern homogeneous sums and $U$-statistics o…
The Lukacs property of the free Poisson distribution is studied here. We prove that if free $\X$ and $\Y$ are free Poisson distributed with suitable parameters, then $\X+\Y$ and $\left(\X+\Y\right)^{-\frac{1}{2}}\X\left(\X+\Y\right)^{-\frac{1}{2}}$ are free. As as an auxiliary result we give joint cumulants of $\X$ and $\X^{-1}$ for free Poisson distributed $\X$. We also study the Lukacs property of the free gamma distribution.
We consider sequences of symmetric $U$-statistics, not necessarily Hoeffding-degenerate, both in a one- and multi-dimensional setting, and prove quantitative central limit theorems (CLTs) based on the use of {\it contraction operators}. Our results represent an explicit counterpart to analogous criteria that are available for sequences of random variables living on the Gaussian, Poisson or Rademacher chaoses, and are perfectly tailored for geometric applications. As a demonstration of this fact, we develop explicit bounds for subgraph counting in generalised random graphs on Euclidean spaces; …
An alternative parametric description for discrete random variables, called muculants, is proposed. In contrast to cumulants, muculants are based on the Fourier series expansion, rather than on the Taylor series expansion, of the logarithm of the characteristic function. We utilize results from cepstral theory to derive elementary properties of muculants, some of which demonstrate behavior superior to those of cumulants. For example, muculants and cumulants are both additive. While the existence of cumulants is linked to how often the characteristic function is differentiable, all muculants ex…
We study mesoscopic linear statistics for a class of determinantal point processes which interpolates between Poisson and Gaussian Unitary Ensemble statistics. These processes are obtained by modifying the spectrum of the correlation kernel of the GUE eigenvalue process. An example of such a system comes from considering the distribution of non-colliding Brownian motions in a cylindrical geometry, or a grand canonical ensemble of free fermions in a quadratic well at positive temperature. When the scale of the modification of the spectrum of the GUE kernel, related to the size of the cylinder o…
We derive mixing properties for a broad class of Poisson count time series satisfying a certain contraction condition. Using specific coupling techniques, we prove absolute regularity at a geometric rate not only for stationary Poisson-GARCH processes but also for models with an explosive trend. We provide easily verifiable sufficient conditions for absolute regularity for a variety of models including classical (log-)linear models. Finally, we illustrate the practical use of our results for hypothesis testing.
Consider the max-stable process $η(t) = \max_{i\in\mathbb N} U_i \rm{e}^{\langle X_i, t\rangle - κ(t)}$, $t\in\mathbb{R}^d$, where $\{U_i, i\in\mathbb{N}\}$ are points of the Poisson process with intensity $u^{-2}\rm{d} u$ on $(0,\infty)$, $X_i$, $i\in\mathbb{N}$, are independent copies of a random $d$-variate vector $X$ (that are independent of the Poisson process), and $κ: \mathbb{R}^d \to \mathbb{R}$ is a function. We show that the process $η$ is stationary if and only if $X$ has multivariate normal distribution and $κ(t)-κ(0)$ is the cumulant generating function of $X$. In this case, $η$ i…
We consider a type of nonnormal approximation of infinitely divisible distributions that incorporates compound Poisson, Gamma, and normal distributions. The approximation relies on achieving higher orders of cumulant matching, to obtain higher rates of approximation error decay. The parameters of the approximation are easy to fix. The computational complexity of random sampling of the approximating distribution in many cases is of the same order as normal approximation. Error bounds in terms of total variance distance are derived. Both the univariate and the multivariate cases of the approxima…
In \cite{Bia97} Biane proposed a new statistic on set partitions which he called \emph{restricted crossings}. In a series of papers \cite{Ans01,Ans04,Ans04b,Ans05} Anshelevich showed that this statistic is an essential tool to investigate stochastic processes on $q$-Fock space. In particular, Anshelevich constructed operators whose moments count restricted crossings and used these operators to develop a beautiful theory of noncommutative $q$-Lévy processes. In the present paper following Anshelevich we define gauge operators on $(α,q)$-Fock and cumulants which are governed by statistics on par…
We study linear statistics of a class of determinantal processes which interpolate between Poisson and GUE/Ginibre statistics in dimension 1 or 2. These processes are obtained by performing an independent Bernoulli percolation on the particle configuration of of a log-gas confined in a general potential. We show that, depending on the expected number of deleted particles, there is a universal transition for mesoscopic statistics. Namely, at small scales, the point process still behaves according to random matrix theory, while, at large scales, it needs to be renormalized because the variance o…
We provide a sufficient condition for the uniqueness in distribution of Gibbs point processes with non-negative pairwise interaction, together with convergent expansions of the log-Laplace functional, factorial moment densities and factorial cumulant densities (correlation functions and truncated correlation functions). The criterion is a continuum version of a convergence condition by Fern{á}ndez and Procacci (2007), the proof is based on the Kirkwood-Salsburg integral equations and is close in spirit to the approach by Bissacot, Fern{á}ndez and Procacci (2010). In addition, we provide formul…
Motivated by second order asymptotic results, we characterize the convergence in law of double integrals, with respect to Poisson random measures, toward a standard Gaussian distribution. Our conditions are expressed in terms of contractions of the kernels. To prove our main results, we use the theory of stable convergence of generalized stochastic integrals developed by Peccati and Taqqu. One of the advantages of our approach is that the conditions are expressed directly in terms of the kernel appearing in the multiple integral and do not make any explicit use of asymptotic dependence propert…
