We present a simple model for a description of magnetization processes in rare-earth tetraborides. The model is based on the coexistence of two subsystems, and namely, the spin subsystem described by the Ising model and the electronic subsystem described by the Falicov-Kimball model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice (SSL). Moreover, both subsystems are coupled by the anisotropic spin-dependent interaction of the Ising type. We have found, that the switching on the spin-dependent interaction ($J_z$) between the electron and spin subsystems and taking into account the electron hopping on the nearest ($t$) and next-nearest ($t'$) lattice sites of the SSL leads to a stabilization of new magnetization plateaus. In addition, to the Ising magnetization plateau at $m^{sp}/m_s^{sp}=1/3$ we have found three new magnetization plateaus located at $m^{sp}/m_s^{sp}=1/2$, 1/5 and 1/7 of the saturated spin magnetization $m_s^{sp}$. The ground-states corresponding to magnetization plateaus have the same spin structure consisting of parallel antiferromagnetic bands separated by ferromagnetic stripes.
A complete and exact solution of the ground-state problem for the Ising model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice in the applied magnetic field is found. The magnetization plateau at the one third of the saturation value is shown to be the only possible fractional plateau in this model. However, stripe magnetic structures with magnetization 1/2 and $1/n$ ($n > 3$), observed in the rare-earth tetraborides RB$_4$, occur at the boundaries of the three-dimensional regions of the ground-state phase diagram. These structures give rise to new magnetization plateaus if interactions of longer ranges are …
Both the basic electronic structure of tetraborides, and the changes across the lanthanide series in $R$B$_4$ ($R$ = rare earth) compounds, are studied using the correlated band theory LDA+U method in the all-electron Full Potential Local Orbital (FPLO) code. A set of boron bonding bands can be identified that are well separated from the antibonding bands. Separately, the ``dimer B'' $2p_z$ orbital is non-bonding ({\it viz.} graphite and MgB$_2$), and mixes strongly with the metal 4d or $5d$ states that form the conduction states. The bonding bands are not entirely filled even for the trivalen…

We study an anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnet with ferromagnetic transverse spin exchange using exact quantum Monte Carlo methods. Such a model is relevant to a class of rare earth tetraboride materials that display a range of magnetization plateaus under applied magnetic field. The layered arrangement of magnetic ions in these materials is topologically equivalent to the Shastry-Sutherland lattice. In this frustrated geometry, we study the interplay of next-nearest neighbor interactions in stabilizing a plateau at half the saturation magnetization (or 1/2 plateau). We also show hysteresi…
We investigated the classical Shastry-Sutherland lattice under an external magnetic field in order to understand the recently discovered magnetization plateaux in the rare-earth tetraborides compounds RB$_4$. A detailed study of the role of thermal fluctuations was carried out by mean of classical spin waves theory and Monte-Carlo simulations. Magnetization quasi-plateaux were observed at 1/3 of the saturation magnetization at non zero temperature. We showed that the existence of these quasi-plateaux is due to an entropic selection of a particular collinear state. We also obtained a phase diag…
We study the finite-temperature transition to the $m=1/2$ magnetization plateau in a model of interacting $S=1/2$ spins with longer range interactions and strong exchange anisotropy on the geometrically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice. This model was shown to capture the qualitative features of the field-induced magnetization plateaus in the rare-earth tetraboride, ${\rm TmB_4}$. Our results show that the transition to the plateau state occurs via two successive transitions with the two-dimensional Ising universality class, when the quantum exchange interactions are finite, whereas a sin…
An exact analytical solution of the ground state problem of the isotropic classical Heisenberg model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice in external magnetic field $H$ is found for arbitrary ratio of diagonal to edge exchange constants $J_2/J_1$. The phase diagram of this model in the ($J_2/J_1, H/J_1$) plane is presented. It includes spin-flop, spin-flip and umbrella phases. The magnetization curves are found to be linear until saturation. It is shown numerically that the inclusion of the easy-axis anisotropy into the model leads to the appearance of the 1/3 magnetization plateau, corresponding…
We have observed geometrical frustration of quadrupolar and magnetic moments in dysprosium tetraboride, DyB4, where the rare-earth sites form a Shastry-Sutherland lattice. Resonant x-ray scattering at the LIII absorption edge of Dy was utilized. Analysis of the energy, polarization, temperature, and azimuthal-angle dependences of the E1 resonance of the (1 0 0) forbidden reflection show that the magnetic and quadrupolar components within the frustrated c plane have a short-range correlation, suggesting that the moments are fluctuating. By contrast, the basic antiferromagnetic component along t…
We use large scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations to study an extended version of the canonical Shastry-Sutherland model -- including additional interactions and exchange anisotropy -- over a wide range of interaction parameters and an applied magnetic field. The model is appropriate for describing the low energy properties of some members of the rare earth tetraborides. Working in the limit of large Ising-like exchange anisotropy, we demonstrate the stabilization of columnar antiferromagnetic order in the ground state at zero field and an extended magnetization plateau at 1/2 the saturation …
The competing spin orders and fractional magnetization plateaus of classical Heisenberg model with long-range interactions on a Shastry-Sutherland lattice are investigated using Monte Carlo simulations, in order to understand the fascinating spin ordering sequence observed in TmB4 and other rare-earth tetraborides. The simulation reproduces the experimental 1/2 magnetization plateau at low temperature by considering multifold long range interactions. It is found that more local long range interactions can be satisfied in the 1/2 plateau state than those in the 1/3 plateau state, leading to the…
We have performed DC and AC magnetization measurements for the rare-earth magnetic alloy systems Gd_{0.62}Y_{0.38}, Tb_{0.86}Y_{0.14}, and Dy_{0.97}Y_{0.03}. These materials commonly exhibit a proper helical magnetic structure, and ferromagnetic structure at lower temperatures. In all of these materials, a difference between zero-field-cooled (ZFC) magnetization and field-cooled (FC) magnetization and a hysteresis loop in the M-H curve have been observed in the helimagnetic phases. The non-equilibrium behavior is possibly caused by a common nature, e. g., chiral domain structures. In addition t…
The results of studies of Y$_{2}$Ti$_2$O$_7$ single crystals doped with Er$^{3+}$ and Yb$^{3+}$ ions by means of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and dc-magnetometry are reported. EPR signals of the trigonal centers with the characteristic hyperfine structure of Er$^{3+}$ or Yb$^{3+}$ ions were observed. Field dependences of magnetization of single crystals for magnetic fields directed along the crystallographic axes and temperature dependences of magnetic susceptibilities were measured. Spin Hamiltonian parameters ($g$-factors and parameters of the hyperfine interaction) for Er$^{3+}$ an…
We have investigated the electronic structure of rare-earth tetraborides, $\textrm{RB}_{4}$, using first-principle electronic structure methods (DFT) implemented in Quantum Espresso (QE). In this article we have studied heather-to neglected strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effects present in these systems on the electronic structure of these system in the non-magnetic ground state. The calculations were done under GGA and GGA+SO approximations using ultrasoft pseudopotentials and fully relativistic ultrasoft pseudopotentials (for SOC case). Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof generalized gradient approxima…
The complex magnetic structures, spin-reorientation and associated exchange interactions have been investigate in Er$_{0.5}$Dy$_{0.5}$FeO$_3$ using bulk magnetization, neutron diffraction, specific heat measurements and density functional theory calculations. The Fe$^{3+}$ spins order as G-type antiferromagnet structure depicted by $Γ_{4}$($G_{x}$,$A_{y}$,$F_{z}$) irreducible representation below 700K, similar to its end compounds. The bulk magnetization data indicate occurrence of the spin-reorientation and rare-earth magnetic ordering below $\sim$75 K and 10 K, respectively. The neutron diff…
We investigate the necessary conditions for the emergence of complex, noncoplanar magnetic configurations in a Kondo lattice model with classical local moments on the geometrically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland lattice and their evolution in an external magnetic field. We demonstrate that topologically nontrivial spin textures, including a new canted flux state, with nonzero scalar chirality arise dynamically from realistic short-range interactions. Our results establish that a finite Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction is necessary for the emergence of these novel magnetic states when the …
While La0.7Ba0.3MnO3 is a ferromagnetic metal (TC = 340 K) with longrange ordering, Nd0.7Ba0.3MnO3 shows a transition around 150 K with a small increase in magnetization, but remains an insulator at all temperatures. Gd0.7Ba0.3MnO3 is non-magnetic and insulating at all temperatures. Low field dc magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements reveal the presence of a transition at around 150 K in Nd0.7Ba0.3MnO3, and a complex behavior with different ordering/freezing transitions at 62, 46 and 36 K in the case of Gd0.7Ba0.3MnO3, the last one being more prominent. The nature of the field depend…
Exchange bias effect is an important attribute in several device applications. Traditionally, it is discussed as a form of exchange anisotropy at the interface between the ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic layers of two distinct systems. We report here on the magnetically ordered alloys possessing the feature of unidirectional anisotropy, which reverses its sign across a characteristic temperature. These are admixed rare earth intermetallics, comprising two dissimilar rare earth (RE) ions, belonging to the two different halves of the 4f-series and imbibing the notion of ferromagnetic coupling be…
Here we report the magnetic and heat capacity studies of the double perovskite com-pounds Ba2SmRuO6 and Ba2DyRuO6. Antiferromagnetic transitions are inferred at 54 K and 47 K in Ba2SmRuO6 and Ba2DyRuO6, respectively in the magnetization measure-ments. Heat capacity measurements show large jumps at the corresponding temperatures and confirm the bulk magnetic ordering. Both the measurements provide clear indication of the ordering of the rare earth moments also along with the Ruthenium moments. How-ever, the heat capacity results suggest that the ordering of rare earth magnetic moments is spread…

We have grown RFe2Ge2 single crystals for R = Y and ten members of the lanthanide series (Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd-Tm, Lu) using Sn flux as the solvent. The method yields clean, high quality crystal plates as evidenced by residual resistivities and RRR values in the range of 3-12 uOhm cm and 20-90 respectively. The crystals are also virtually free of magnetic impurities or secondary phases, allowing the study of the intrinsic anisotropic magnetic behavior of each compound. Characterization was made with X-Ray diffraction, and temperature and field dependent magnetization, specific heat and resistivity. …
We report synthesis and magnetization of Sr2RuREO6 (RE/Ru-211O6) with RE = Gd and Eu. Both Gd,Eu/Ru-211O6 are formed in distorted perovskite-type single phase with monoclinic P21/n space group. Magnetization (M/T) measurements exhibited antiferromagnetic ordering of Ru moments for both Gd and Eu compounds at TN of around 30 K due to super-exchange Ru-O-O-Ru interaction. Interestingly enough, detailed M/H plots of Gd/Ru-211O6 exhibited, the development of a ferromagnetic (FM) component at 20 K. Further at below 10 K, the FM component disappears and rather an spin freezing field (HSF) of around …
Long-range magnetic ordering in R_2 Ba Ni O_5 (R=magnetic rare earth) quasi-1-dimensional mixed-spin antiferromagnets is described by a simple mean-field model that is based on the intrinsic staggered magnetization function of isolated Haldane spin chains for the Ni-subsystem, and single-ion magnetization functions for the rare earth ions. The model is applied to new experimental results obtained in powder diffraction experiments on Nd_2 Ba Ni O_5 and Nd Y Ba Ni O_5, and to previously published diffraction data for Er_2 Ba Ni O_5. From this analysis we extract the bare staggered magnetization …
We have measured the magnetization of rare-earth chiral magnets Yb(Ni$_{1-x}$Cu$_x$)$_{3}$Al$_{9}$ for $x$=0 and 0.06 up to 14.5 T. Magnetization for the field direction $H \parallel c$, which is the hard axis at low temperatures and low fields, overtakes the easy axis magnetization for $H \perp c$ above $\sim$4 T. We analyzed this overtaking of the magnetization curves by considering a crystalline electric field model. It is shown that the $B_{66}$ term, which connects the $|\pm5/2 \rangle$ and the $|\mp7/2\rangle$ states through the off-diagonal matrix element, is responsible for the charact…
Spin-orbit coupling is an important ingredient to regulate the many-body physics, especially for many spin liquid candidate materials such as rare-earth magnets and Kitaev materials. The rare-earth chalcogenides NaYbCh$_2$ (Ch = O, S, Se) is a congenital frustrating system to exhibit the intrinsic landmark of spin liquid by eliminating both the site disorders between Na$^{+}$ and Yb$^{3+}$ ions with the big ionic size difference and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction with the perfect triangular lattice of the Yb$^{3+}$ ions. The temperature versus magnetic-field phase diagram is established…
We report on a study of various RVO3 single-crystal samples (R = La, Nd, Sm, Gd, Er and Y) which show temperature-induced magnetization reversal. For compounds with lighter rare-earths (R = La, Nd and Sm), magnetization reversal can be observed for magnetic field applied in the ab plane and along the c axis, whereas for the heavy rare-earths (R = Gd, Er) magnetization reversal is only observed when the field is applied along the a axis. YVO3 has a magnetization reversal along all the main crystallographic axes in a modest applied field. We have found that some compounds are very sensitive to s…
Rare earth based intermetallics, SmScGe and NdScGe, are shown to exhibit near zero net magnetization with substitutions of 6 to 9 atomic percent of Nd and 25 atomic percent of Gd, respectively. The notion of magnetic compensation in them is also elucidated by the crossover of zero magnetization axis at low magnetic fields (less than 103 Oe) and field-induced reversal in the orientation of the magnetic moments of the dissimilar rare earth ions at higher magnetic fields. These magnetically ordered materials with no net magnetization and appreciable conduction electron polarization display an att…
The discovery of novel structural and physical properties in the $A$-site ordered manganite $R$BaMn$_2$O$_6$ ($R$ = Y and rare earth elements) has demanded new comprehension about perovskite manganese oxides. In the present study, the $A$-site disordered form $R$$_{0.5}$Ba$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ was successfully synthesized and compared with $R$BaMn$_2$O$_6$ in the structures and electromagnetic properties. $R$$_{0.5}$Ba$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$ has a primitive cubic perovskite cell. Unexpectedly the magnetic glassy states are dominant as the ground state for $R$$_{0.5}$Ba$_{0.5}$MnO$_3$. A peculiar behavior, t…
Motivated by experiments on Pr2Ir2O7, we consider metallic pyrochlore systems A2B2O7, where the A-sites are occupied by rare-earth local moments and the B-sites host 5d transition metal ions with itinerant strongly spin-orbit coupled electrons. Assuming non-Kramers doublets on the A-site, we derive the RKKY interaction between them mediated by the B-site itinerant electrons and find extended non-Heisenberg interactions. Analyzing a simplified model of the RKKY interaction, we uncover a local moment phase with coexisting spiral Ising-like magnetic dipolar and XY-like quadrupolar ordering. This …
In this paper, we investigate the influence of the rare earth element (R) on the physical properties of RVO3 (R = Er, Ho, Y, Lu). For this purpose, a theoretical work is reported in this study using ab initio method with the intent of enhancing our knowledge of the electronic, and magnetic properties of RVO3 (R = Er, Ho, Y, Lu) compounds. The electronic properties of these materials show the presence of Jahn-Teller effect, with a band gap of approximately 0.58eV, 1.57eV, 1.12eV, 1.28eV, for ErVO3, HoVO3, YVO3, LuVO3, respectively. The magnetic contribution of Ho, Er, and V atoms in HoVO3, and …
In this paper, we investigate the low temperature magnetic properties of the rare-earth garnet compound Nd$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$ in detail by means of magnetization, specific heat and magnetocaloric effect measurements. The magnetic thermal properties along with the crystal field calculations reveal that the Nd$^{3+}$ ions form into a frustrated hyper-kagome lattice with connected triangles have an Ising-like ground state with the easy axis along the local [100], [010] and [001] directions. Instead of a quantum spin liquid ground state, an antiferromagnetically ordered state is found below $T_{\ma…

RbFe(MoO4)2 is a rare example of a nearly two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice. Magnetic resonance spectra and magnetization curves reveal that the system has a layered spin structure with six magnetic sublattices. The sublattices within a layer are arranged in a triangular manner with the magnetization vectors 120 degree apart. The H-T phase diagram, containing at least five different magnetic phases is constructed. In zero field, RbFe(MoO4)2 undergoes a phase transition at T_N=3.8 K into a non-collinear triangular spin structure with all the spins confined in th…
We present a comprehensive experimental study of magnetization and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in double perovskite (DP) materials $R_2$NiMnO$_6$ with $R =$ Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, and Dy. While a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition, with T$_{\rm C}$ in the range $\sim 100 - 200~$K, is a common feature that can be attributed to the ordering of Mn$^{4+}$ and Ni$^{2+}$ magnetic moments, qualitatively distinct behavior depending on the choice of $R$ is observed at low temperatures. These low-temperature anomalies in magnetization are also manifest in the change in magnetic entropy, $-ΔS_{M}$, wh…
Complex magneto structural behaviour of rare rich intermetallic Tb$_3$Co is reported in this study. Below the 84K (T$_N$), it undergoes a first order magnetic transition 72K confirmed from specific heat and magnetization measurements. Detailed study using magnetization, specific heat, neuron diffraction and ac-susceptibility measurements suggests that the compound in the question possesses canted magnetic structure. Neutron diffraction reveals that Tb moments are aligned antiferromagnetically (AFM) in ab plane and ferromagnetically (FM) along c direction. This study focusses on the temperature…
The role of slight changes of the chemical composition on antiferromagnetic ordering of Cr in rare-earth orthochoromites was investigated on a series of ceramic solid-solutions Ce$_{1-x}$Eu${_x}$O$_3$ where x varied from 0 to 1. Gradual replacement of Ce with Eu reduces the cell volume and acts equivalently to applying external pressure. Full replacement of Ce by Eu, on the other hand, reduces the Néel temperature from 260 K for CeCrO$_3$ to 178 K for EuCrO$_3$ as established by magnetization, heat capacity and neutron powder diffraction measurements. High resolution x-ray powder diffraction m…
Magnetic frustration in metallic rare earth lanthanides ($Ln$) with $4f$-electrons is crucial for producing interesting magnetic phases with high magnetic anisotropy where intertwined charge and spin degrees of freedom lead to novel phenomena. Here we report on the magnetic, thermodynamic, and electrical transport properties of TbAuAl$_4$Ge$_2$. Tb ions form 2-dimensional triangular lattice layers which stack along the crystalline $c$-axis. The magnetic phase diagram reveals multiple nearly degenerate ordered states upon applying field along the magnetically easy $ab$-plane before saturation. …
An analytical description of non-equilibrium phenomena in interacting quantum systems is rarely possible. Here we present one example where such a description can be achieved, namely the ferromagnetic Kondo model. In equilibrium, this model is tractable via perturbative renormalization-group techniques. We employ a recently developed extension of the flow-equation method to calculate the non-equilibrium decay of the local magnetization at zero temperature. The flow equations admit analytical solutions which become exact at short and long times, in the latter case revealing that the system alwa…
We clarify the role of crystalline electric field (CEF) induced magnetic anisotropy in the ground state and spin-wave spectrum of cubic rare-earth materials with dominating isotropic magnetic exchange interactions. In particular we study the hexaboride NdB_6 which is shown to exhibit strong spin-quadrupolar coupling. The CEF scheme is analyzed and a non-collinear magnetization response is found. The spin orientation in the antiferromagnetically ordered ground-state is identified. Moreover, the spin excitations are evaluated and in agreement with inelastic neutron scattering a suppression of on…
The charge and spin of the electrons in solids have been extensively exploited in electronic devices and in the development of spintronics. Another attribute of electrons - their orbital nature - is attracting growing interest for understanding exotic phenomena and in creating the next-generation of quantum devices such as orbital qubits. Here, we report on orbital-flop induced magnetoresistance anisotropy in CeSb. In the low temperature high magnetic-field driven ferromagnetic state, a series of additional minima appear in the angle-dependent magnetoresistance. These minima arise from the ani…
The crystalline electric field (CEF) is investigated in Pr$_3$Pt$_{23}$Si$_{11}$ and Nd$_3$Pt$_{23}$Si$_{11}$ by neutron spectroscopy (NS). At low temperature, the number of observed CEF excitations is consistent with the orthorhombic symmetry at the rare earth site. This agrees with previous results on Ce$_3$Pt$_{23}$Si$_{11}$. For Pr- and Nd$_3$Pt$_{23}$Si$_{11}$, the number of CEF parameters is too large to allow for an unambiguous determination. This determination is possible for Ce$_3$Pt$_{23}$Si$_{11}$, due to a reduced number of parameters and to the availability of extensive experiment…
Modeling blocking temperature in molecular magnets has been a long standing problem in the field of molecular magnetism. We investigate this problem using a kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) approach on an assembly of 100,000 short molecular magnetic chains (SMMCs), each of six identical spins with nearest neighbour anisotropic ferromagnetic exchange interactions. Each spin is also anisotropic with an uniaxial anisotropy. The site spin on these SMMCs take values $1$, $3/2$ or $2$. Using eigenstates of these SMMCs as the states of Markov chain, we carry out a kMC simulation starting with an initial sta…
$R$V${_6}$Sn${_6}$ ($R$ = Y, Gd - Tm, Lu) single crystals are synthesized by Sn-flux method and their physical properties are characterized by magnetization, resistivity, and specific heat measurements. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns of all samples can be well indexed with the hexagonal HfFe$_6$Ge$_6$-type structure, where rare-earth atoms form hexagonal layers and vanadium atoms form Kagome layers. At high temperatures, magnetic susceptibility measurements of moment bearing rare-earths ($R$ = Gd - Tm) follow Curie-Weiss behavior. Effective moments estimated from the polycrystalline average…
Strong permanent magnets mainly consist of rare earths ($R$) and transition metals ($T$). The main phase of the neodymium magnet, which is the strongest magnet, is Nd$_2$Fe$_{14}$B. Sm$_{2}$Fe$_{17}$N$_{3}$ is another magnet compound having excellent magnetic properties comparable to those of Nd$_{2}$Fe$_{14}$B. Their large saturation magnetization, strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy, and high Curie temperature originate from the interaction between the $T$-3d electrons and $R$-4f electrons. This article discusses the magnetism of rare-earth magnet compounds. The basic theory and first-princ…
We present a comprehensive study of static and dynamic magnetic properties in the Ising-like dipolar antiferromagnet (AFM) DyScO$_3$\ by means of DC and AC magnetization measurements supported by classical Monte-Carlo calculations. Our AC-susceptibility data show that the magnetic dynamics exhibit a clear crossover from an Arrhenius-like regime to quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) at $T^* = 10$ K. Below $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 3.2$ K DyScO$_3$ orders in an antiferromagnetic $GxAy$-type magnetic structure and the magnetization dynamics slow down to the minute timescale. The low-temperature mag…
Spin reorientation and magnetisation reversal are two important features of the rare-earth orthorhombic provskites ($RM$O$_{3}$'s) that have attracted a lot of attention, though their exact microscopic origin has eluded researchers. Here, using density functional theory and classical atomistic spin dynamics we build a general Heisenberg magnetic model that allows to explore the whole phase diagram of the chromite and ferrite compounds and to scrutinize the microscopic mechanism responsible for spin reorientations and magnetisation reversals. We show that the occurrence of a magnetization rever…
In intermetallic compounds with zero-orbital momentum ($L=0$) the magnetic anisotropy and the electronic band structure are interconnected. Here, we investigate this connection on divalent Eu and trivalent Gd intermetallic compounds. We find by X-ray magnetic circular dichroism an out-of-plane easy magetization axis in 2D atom-thick EuAu$_2$. Angle-resolved photoemission and density-functional theory prove that this is due to strong $f-d$ band hybridization and Eu$^{2+}$ valence. In contrast, the easy in-plane magnetization of the structurally-equivalent GdAu$_2$ is ruled by spin-orbit-split $…
The rare-earth compounds R2O2Bi (R=Tb, Dy, Er, Lu, Y) are newly discovered superconductors in the vicinity of a rare-earth magnetic long-range order. In this work, we determine the magnetic order of the parent compound Dy2O2Te by neutron scattering as the A-type antiferromagnetic structure below the Néel temperature TN=9.7K. The large staggered magnetic moment 9.4(1) μB per Dy at T=3.5K lies in the basal ab plane. In a magnetic field, anomalous magnetic properties including the bifurcation between zero-field- and field-cooling magnetization, a butterfly-shaped magnetic hysteresis, and slow mag…

Exploration of rare-earth (RE)-based Kagome lattice magnets with spin-orbital entangled jeff=1/2 moments will provide new platform for investigating the exotic magnetic phases. This serial compounds crystallize in hexagonal coordinated structure with space group P63 (No.173), where magnetic RE3+ ions have distorted Kagomé lattice connections within the ab plane and stacked in a AB-type fashion along c axis. The i…
Violation of time reversal and spatial inversion symmetries has profound consequences for elementary particles and cosmology. Spontaneous breaking of these symmetries at phase transitions gives rise to unconventional physical phenomena in condensed matter systems, such as ferroelectricity induced by magnetic spirals, electromagnons, non-reciprocal propagation of light and spin waves, and the linear magnetoelectric (ME) effect - the electric polarization proportional to the applied magnetic field and the magnetization induced by the electric field. Here, we report the experimental study of the …
We report the resistivity, magnetization and 19^F NMR results in polycrystalline sample of SmFeAsO_(0.86)F_(0.14). The resistivity and the magnetization data show a sharp drop at 48 K indicating the superconducting transition. The nuclear spin-lattice rate (1/T_1) and spin-spin relaxation rate (1/T_2) clearly show the existence of a structural phase transition near 163 K in the sample which also undergo superconducting transition. This finding creates interest to explore whether this is unique for only Sm based systems or it is also present in other rare-earth based 1111 superconductors.
Alkali metal rare-earth chalcogenide $ARECh2$ (A=alkali or monovalent metal, RE=rare earth, Ch=O, S, Se, Te), is a large family of quantum spin liquid (QSL) candidates we discovered recently. Unlike $YbMgGaO4$, most members in the family except for the oxide ones, have relatively small crystalline electric-field (CEF) excitation levels, particularly the first ones. This makes the conventional Curie-Weiss analysis at finite temperatures inapplicable and CEF excitations may play an essential role in understanding the low-energy spin physics. Here we considered an effective magnetic Hamiltonian i…
