The results of studies of Y$_{2}$Ti$_2$O$_7$ single crystals doped with Er$^{3+}$ and Yb$^{3+}$ ions by means of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and dc-magnetometry are reported. EPR signals of the trigonal centers with the characteristic hyperfine structure of Er$^{3+}$ or Yb$^{3+}$ ions were observed. Field dependences of magnetization of single crystals for magnetic fields directed along the crystallographic axes and temperature dependences of magnetic susceptibilities were measured. Spin Hamiltonian parameters ($g$-factors and parameters of the hyperfine interaction) for Er$^{3+}$ and Yb$^{3+}$ ions were obtained from analysis of experimental data. The registered EPR spectra and magnetization curves were successfully reproduced by simulations in framework of the crystal-field approach, in particular, with an account for hybridization of ground 4f$^{13}$ configuration of Yb$^{3+}$ ions with the charge transfer states.
Cubic Y$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$ single crystals doped with Er$^{3+}$ and Yb$^{3+}$ ions have been studied by the methods of electron spin resonance (ESR) and selective laser spectroscopy. ESR spectra exhibit signals from rare-earth ions that substitute for yttrium ions in sites with local trigonal symmetry. The $g$ tensor components are determined. The results of optical investigations indicate that impurity centers of several types are formed; the sublevel energies of the ground and excited multiplets of these centers are found. Among the great variety of detected optical centers, the centers th…
The charge ordered structure of ions and vacancies characterizing rare-earth pyrochlore oxides serves as a model for the study of geometrically frustrated magnetism. The organization of magnetic ions into networks of corner-sharing tetrahedra gives rise to highly correlated magnetic phases with strong fluctuations, including spin liquids and spin ices. It is an open question how these ground states governed by local rules are affected by disorder. In the pyrochlore Tb$_2$Hf$_2$O$_7$, we demonstrate that the vicinity of the disordering transition towards a defective fluorite structure translate…
We investigate the low temperature X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of YBa2Cu3O6 compounds with x = 6.0 doped with Dy3+, Tb3+, and Nd3+. The EPR spectra of Dy3+ and Tb3+ have been identified. The EPR of Tb3+ is used also to study the effect of suppression of high Tc superconductivity. The EPR of Nd3+ is probably masked by the intense resonance of Cu2+. All experimental EPR results compare well with theoretical estimations.
Synthesis and crystal structures are described for the compounds Ln2(Ti2-xLnx)O7-x/2, where Ln = Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu, and x ranges from 0 to 0.67. Rietveld refinements on X-ray powder diffraction data indicate that in Tb and Dy titanate pyrochlores, extra Ln3+ cations mix mainly on the Ti4+ site with little disorder on the original Ln3+ site. For the smaller rare earths (Ho-Lu), stuffing additional lanthanide ions results in a pyrochlore to defect fluorite transition, where the Ln3+ and Ti4+ ions become completely randomized at the maximum (x=0.67). In all of these Ln-Ti-O pyrochlores, …
The electronic and magnetic properties of spin-1/2 pyrochlores R2V2O7 were investigated on the basis of density-functional calculations. Contrary to the common belief, the spin-1/2 V4+ ions are found to have a substantial easy-axis single-ion anisotropy. The |D/J| ratio deduced from the magnon quantum Hall effect of Lu2V2O7, where J is the nearest-neighbor spin exchange and D is the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya parameter, is much greater than the value estimated from our calculations (i.e., 0.32 vs. 0.05). We show that this discrepancy is due to the neglect of the single-ion anisotropy of the V4+ ion…
Electron paramagnetic resonance experiments on doped Yb3+ ions in YBaCuO compounds with different oxygen contents have been made. We have observed the strong temperature dependence of the EPR linewidth in the all investigated samples caused by the Raman processes of spin-lattice relaxation. The spin-lattice relaxation rate anomaly revealed near TC in the superconducting species can be assigned to the phonon density spectrum changes
Anomalous thermal behavior on the EPR linewidths of Gd impurities diluted in Ce compounds has been observed. In metals, the local magnetic moment EPR linewidth, ΔH, is expected to increase linearly with the temperature. In contrast, in Ce_{x}La_{1-x}Os_{2} the Gd EPR spectra show a nonlinear increase. In this work, the mechanisms that are responsible for the thermal behavior of the EPR lines in Ce_{x}La_{1-x}Os_{2} are examined. We show that the exchange interaction between the local magnetic moments and the conduction electrons are responsible for the narrowing of the spectra at low temperatu…
The question of structural disorder and its effects on magnetism is relevant to a number of spin liquid candidate materials. Although commonly thought of as a route to spin glass behavior, here we describe a system in which the structural disorder results in long-range antiferromagnetic order due to local symmetry breaking. Nd$_2$ScNbO$_7$ is shown to have a dispersionless gapped excitation observed in other neodymium pyrochlores below T$_N$ = 0.37 K through polarized and inelastic neutron scattering. However the dispersing spin waves are not observed. This excited mode is shown to occur in on…
Multipolar magnetism is an emerging field of quantum materials research. The building blocks of multipolar phenomena are magnetic ions with a non-Kramers doublet, where the orbital and spin degrees of freedom are inextricably intertwined, leading to unusual spin-orbital entangled states. The detection of such subtle forms of matter has, however, been difficult due to a limited number of appropriate experimental tools. In this work, motivated by a recent magnetostriction experiment on Pr$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$, we theoretically investigate how multipolar quantum spin ice, an elusive three dimensional q…
A quantum mean field theory of the pyrochlore lattice is presented. The starting point is not the individual magnetic ions, as in the usual Curie-Weiss mean field theory, but a set of interacting corner sharing tetrahedra. We check the consistency of the model against magnetic susceptibility data, and find a good agreement between the theoretical predictions and the experimental data. Implications of the model and future extensions are also discussed.
Reproducing the electronic structure of AM$_4$X$_8$ lacunar spinels with a breathing pyrochlore lattice is a great theoretical challenge due to the interplay of various factors. The character of the M$_4$X$_4$ cluster orbitals is critically influenced by the Jahn-Teller instability, the spin-orbit interaction, and also by the magnetic state of the clusters. Consequently, to reproduce the narrow-gap semiconducting nature of these moderately correlated materials requires advanced approaches, since the strength of the inter-cluster hopping is strongly affected by the character of the cluster orbi…
The electron paramagnetic resonance is used to measure the single-ion anisotropy of Gd3+ ions in the pyrochlore structure of (Y{1-x}Gdx)2Ti2O7. A rather strong easy-plane type anisotropy is found. The anisotropy constant D is comparable to the exchange integral J in the prototype Gd2Ti2O7, D~0.75J and exceeds the dipolar energy scale. Physical implications of an easy-plane anisotropy for a pyrochlore antiferromagnet are considered. We calculate the magnetization curves at T=0 and discuss phase transitions in magnetic field.
The crystal structures of the A2B2O7-x Niobium-based pyrochlores Y2(Nb0.86Y0.14)2O6.91, CaYNb2O7, and Y2NbTiO7 are reported, determined by powder neutron diffraction. These compounds represent the first observation of B-site displacements in the pyrochlore structure: the B-site ions are found to be displaced from the ideal pyrochlore positions, creating electric dipoles. The orientations of these dipoles are fully analogous to orientations of the magnetic moments in Ising spin based magnetically frustrated pyrochlores. Diffuse scattering in electron diffraction patterns shows that the displace…
We discuss the ground state of a pyrochlore lattice of threefold-orbitally-degenerate $S=1/2$ magnetic ions. We derive an effective spin-orbital Hamiltonian and show that the orbital degrees of freedom can modulate the spin exchange, removing the infinite spin-degeneracy characteristic of pyrochlore structures. The resulting state is a collection of spin-singlet dimers, with a residual degeneracy due to their relative orientation. This latter is lifted by a magneto-elastic interaction, induced in the spin-singlet phase-space, that forces a tetragonal distortion. Such a theory provides an expla…
We study possible Weyl semimetals of strongly-correlated electrons by investigating magnetotransport properties in pyrochlore R2Ir2O7 (R=rare-earth ions), choosing three types of R ions to design the exchange coupling scheme between R 4f and Ir 5d moments; non-magnetic Eu (4f6), isotropic Gd (4f7), and anisotropic Tb (4f8). In the doping-induced semimetallic state, distinctive features of magnetoresistance and Hall effect are observed in R=Gd and Tb compounds due to the effects of the exchange-enhanced isotropic and anisotropic Zeeman fields, respectively, exemplifying the double Weyl semimeta…
Motivated by experiments on Pr2Ir2O7, we consider metallic pyrochlore systems A2B2O7, where the A-sites are occupied by rare-earth local moments and the B-sites host 5d transition metal ions with itinerant strongly spin-orbit coupled electrons. Assuming non-Kramers doublets on the A-site, we derive the RKKY interaction between them mediated by the B-site itinerant electrons and find extended non-Heisenberg interactions. Analyzing a simplified model of the RKKY interaction, we uncover a local moment phase with coexisting spiral Ising-like magnetic dipolar and XY-like quadrupolar ordering. This …
The possible existence of topological insulators in cubic pyrochlore iridates A$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (A = Y or rare-earth elements) is investigated by taking into account the strong spin-orbit coupling and trigonal crystal field effect. It is found that the trigonal crystal field effect, which is always present in real systems, may destabilize the topological insulator proposed for the ideal cubic crystal field, leading to a metallic ground state. Thus the trigonal crystal field is an important control parameter for the metal-insulator changeover. We propose that this could be one of the reaso…
Metal-insulator transitions in pyrochlore iridates (A2Ir2O7) are believed to occur due to subtle interplay of spin-orbit coupling, geometric frustration, and electron interactions. In particular, the nature of magnetic ordering of iridium ions in the insulating phase is crucial for understanding of several exotic phases recently proposed for these materials. We study the spectrum of magnetic excitations in the intermediate-coupling regime for the so-called all-in/all-out magnetic state in pyrochlore iridates with non-magnetic A-site ions (A=Eu,Y), which is found to be preferred in previous the…
We report the low temperature properties of a new series of pyrochlore iridates R2Ir2O7 (R = rare-earth elements). We found that the compounds with R = Pr, Sm, Nd, and Eu exhibit metallic conductivity, whereas those with smaller rare-earth ions are nonmetallic. Such metal-nonmetal changeover is attributable to the importance of electron correlation among the Ir 5d electrons. Reflecting the geometrical frustration in the pyrochlore lattice, the rare-earth moments do not exhibit magnetic ordering to temperatures well below the antiferromagnetic Weiss temperature. We have not found any sign of su…
X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) as well as x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) and magnetization of hybrid pyrochlore Eu2-xFexTi2O7 were investigated, where the rare earth Eu (4f) was replaced with transition metal Fe (3d) to introduce competing 4f-3d interactions. It is confirmed that the valence states of Eu and Fe ions are formally trivalent while that of Ti ions are tetravalent (3d0). The analysis yielded that the tetravalent Ti ions occupy octahedral sites with distorted Oh symmetry which is triggered by the presence of vacant 8a anionic site adjacent to TiO6 octahedra. Further s…
We study magnetic behaviour of the Yb$^{3+}$ ions on a frustrated pyrochlore lattice in the spinel {\CYS}. The crystal-electric field parameters deduced from high-energy inelastic neutron scattering reveal well-isolated ytterbium ground state doublet with a weakly Ising character. Magnetic order studied by powder neutron diffraction evolves from the $XY$-type antiferromagnetic $Γ_5$ state to a splayed ice-like ferromagnet (both with k=0) in applied magnetic field with $B_c$=3 T. Low-energy inelastic neutron scattering identifies weakly dispersive magnetic bands around 0.72 meV starting at $\mi…
Muon spin relaxation measurements on some quantum spin ice candidate materials, the insulating pyrochlores Pr2B2O7 (B = Sn, Zr, Hf), have been performed for temperatures in the range 0.05-280 K. The results are indicative of a static distribution of magnetic moments which appears to grow on cooling and whose size at low temperatures is significantly larger than that expected for Pr nuclear moments. Using density functional theory we show how this effect can be explained via a hyperfine enhancement arising from a splitting of the non-Kramers doublet ground states on Pr ions close to the muon wh…
The Raman spectroscopy and AC and DC magnetization of Dy$_{2-x}$Eu$_x$Ti$_2$O$_7$ have been investigated. In Raman Spectroscopy, the systematic shift in all phonon modes with Eu content in Dy$_{2-x}$Eu$_x$Ti$_2$O$_7$ confirms that Dy$^{3+}$ ion is substituted by Eu3+ ions. High concentration of Eu induces the dipolar exchange interactions and crystal-field interactions in Dy$_{2-x}$Eu$_x$Ti$_2$O$_7$. Rich Eu content samples (x=1.8 and 1.9) show the existence of wasp-waisted hysteresis loop and that can be attributed to the coexistence of dipolar field and anisotropy exchange interaction. AC su…
We have studied long range orders of electric quadrupole moments described by an effective pseudospin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Hamiltonian representing pyrochlore magnets with non-Kramers ions under [111] magnetic field, in relevance to Tb$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$O$_{7}$. Order parameters and phase transitions of this frustrated system are investigated using classical Monte-Carlo simulations. In zero field, the model undergoes a first-order phase transition from a paramagnetic state to an ordered state with an antiparallel arrangement of pseudospins. This pseudospin order is characterized by the wavevector $\boldsy…
Despite a well-ordered pyrochlore crystal structure and strong magnetic interactions between the Dy$^{3+}$ or Ho$^{3+}$ ions, no long range magnetic order has been detected in the pyrochlore titanates Ho$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ and Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. To explore the actual magnetic phase formed by cooling these materials, we measure their magnetization dynamics using toroidal, boundary-free magnetization transport techniques. We find that the dynamical magnetic susceptibility of both compounds has the same distinctive phenomenology, that is indistinguishable in form from that of the dielectric permittiv…
Non-conventional mechanisms have been recently invoked in order to explain the ferromagnetic ground state of A2Mn2O7 pyrochlores (A=Y, In, Lu and Tl) and the puzzling decrease of their Curie temperatures with applied pressure. Here we show, using a perturbation expansion in the Mn-O hopping term, that both features can be understood within the superexhange model, provided that the intra-atomic oxygen interactions are properly taken into account. An additional coupling between the Mn ions mediated by the In(5s)/Tl(6s) bands yields the higher Tc's of these two compounds, this mechamism enhancing…
We report detailed measurements of the low temperature magnetic phase diagram of Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$. Heat capacity and time-of-flight neutron scattering studies of single crystals, subject to magnetic fields applied along the crystallographic [110] direction, reveal unconventional low energy states. Er$^{3+}$ magnetic ions reside on a pyrochlore lattice in Er$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$, where local XY anisotropy and antiferromagnetic interactions give rise to a unique frustrated system. In zero field, the ground state exhibits coexisting short and long range order, accompanied by soft collective spin excit…
Resonant magnetoabsorption spectra for CuGeO3 single crystals containing 2% of Co impurity are studied in the frequency range 60-360 GHz in magnetic field up to 16 T at temperatures 2-60 K. It is found that together with the resonance on Cu2+ chains a new absorption line related with Co2+ ions appears in EPR spectrum. The full set of spectroscopic data (g-factors, linewidths, integrated intensities) have been determined for both resonances. The obtained results exhibit considerable deviations from the universal scenario of doping for CuGeO3 and discussed in the frames of the models of the quan…
We report a systematic study on the crystal growth of the rare-earth titanates $R_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ ($R$ = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Y, Er, Yb and Lu) and Y-doped Tb$_{2-x}$Y$_x$Ti$_2$O$_7$ ($x$ = 0.2 and 1) using an optical floating-zone method. High-quality single crystals were successfully obtained and the growth conditions were carefully optimized. The oxygen pressure was found to be the most important parameter and the appropriate ones are 0.1--0.4 MPa, depending on the radius of rare-earth ions. The growth rate is another parameter and was found to be 2.5--4 mm/h for different rare-earth ions. X-ray d…
The pyrochlore magnet $\rm Yb_2Ti_2O_7$ has been proposed as a quantum spin ice candidate, a spin liquid state expected to display emergent quantum electrodynamics with gauge photons among its elementary excitations. However, $\rm Yb_2Ti_2O_7$'s ground state is known to be very sensitive to its precise stoichiometry. Powder samples, produced by solid state synthesis at relatively low temperatures, tend to be stoichiometric, while single crystals grown from the melt tend to display weak "stuffing" wherein $\mathrm{\sim 2\%}$ of the $\mathrm{Yb^{3+}}$, normally at the $A$ site of the $A_2B_2O_7$…
We report a comprehensive study on the magnetic and structural properties of the spinel sulfides LiInCr4S8, LiGaCr4S8, and CuInCr4S8, where Li+/Cu+ and Ga3+/In3+ ions form a zinc-blende-type order. On the basis of synchrotron X-ray diffraction and magnetization data obtained using polycrystalline samples, these three sulfides are suggested to be breathing pyrochlore magnets with alternating antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions on the small and large tetrahedra, respectively. The measured magnetization processes of the three sulfides up to 72 T are significantly different. The magne…
Structural and spin-glass properties of single crystal $J_{eff}$ = 1/2 pyrochlore antiferromagnet NaCdCo$_2$F$_7$ : correlating $T_f$ with magnetic-bond-disorder
Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are exotic phases of matter exhibiting long-range entanglement and supporting emergent gauge fields. A vigorous search for experimental realizations of these states has identified several materials with properties hinting at QSL physics. A key issue in understanding these QSL candidates is often the interplay of weak disorder of the crystal structure with the spin liquid state. It has recently been pointed out that in at least one important class of candidate QSLs - pyrochlore magnets based on non-Kramers ions such as Pr$^{3+}$ or Tb$^{3+}$- structural disorder can …
In this study, we have performed the magnetocaloric effect and the specific heat measurements of chromium spinel oxide HgCr$_2$O$_4$, wherein the magnetic Cr$^{3+}$ ions form a highly frustrated pyrochlore lattice with significant spin-lattice coupling. In addition to the known magnetic-field-induced phases, our thermodynamic measurements detect a novel quantum phase just before the saturation of the magnetization, which has not been expected from the classical theories of the pyrochlore lattice antiferromagnet with spin-lattice coupling. Based on recent theoretical model calculation, we discu…
X-band electron paramagnetic resonance on doped Er3+ and Yb3+ ions in Y0.99(Yb,Er)0.01Ba2Cu3OX compounds with different oxygen contents in the wide temperature range (4-120)K have been made. In the superconducting species, the strong dependencies of the linewidth and resonance line position from the sweep direction of the applied magnetic field are revealed at the temperatures significantly below TC. The possible origins of the observed hysteresis are analyzed. Applicability of the presented EPR approach to extract information about the dynamics of the flux-line lattice and critical state para…
Rare-earth pyrochlores are known to exhibit exotic magnetic phenomena. We report a study of crystal growth and characterizations of a new rare-earth compound Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$, in which Al$^{3+}$ and Sb$^{5+}$ ions share the same positions with a random distribution. The magnetism are studied by magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and thermal conductivity measurements at low temperatures down to several tens of milli-kelvin. Different from the other reported Er-based pyrochlores exhibiting distinct magnetically ordered states, a spin-freezing transition is detected in Er$_2$AlSbO$_7$ below 0.…
XY pyrochlore antiferromagnets are well-known to exhibit order-by-disorder through both quantum and thermal selection. In this paper we consider the effect of substituting non-magnetic ions onto the magnetic sites in a pyrochlore XY model with generally anisotropic exchange tuned by a single parameter $J^{\pm\pm}/J^\pm$. The physics is controlled by two points in this space of parameters $J^{\pm\pm}/J^\pm=\pm 2$ at which there are line modes in the ground state and hence an $O(L^2)$ ground state degeneracy intermediate between that of a conventional magnet and a Coulomb phase. At each of these…
The results of magnetic investigations on a new series of compounds, Mn2R3Sb3O14, containing 2-dimensional Kagome lattice of R ions and belonging to pyrochlore series, are presented. Crystallographic features of light R members (R= La, Pr and Nd) of this family, as established in the recent literature, have been reported to be novel in many respects, in particular, the rhomohedral nature of the structure which is rare among pyrochlores. It was also reported that, as the R becomes heavier, beyond R= Sm, the fraction of well-known cubic pyrochlore phase tends to gradually dominate. Here, we repo…
The Relevance of Non-axiality and Low-lying Excited States for Slow Magnetic Relaxation in Pentagonal-bipyramidal Erbium(III) Complexes Probed by High-frequency EPR
The electron spin-lattice relaxation (SLR) times T1 of Yb3+‡ ions were measured from the temperature dependence of electron spin resonance linewidth in Y0.99Yb0.01Ba2Cu3Ox with different oxygen contents. Raman relaxation processes dominate the electron SLR. Derived from the temperature dependence of the SLR rate, the Debye temperature (Td) increases with the critical temperature Tc and oxygen content x. Keywords: EPR; ESR; Electron spin-lattice relaxation; Debye temperature; Critical temperature
Ba3Yb2Zn5O11 is unique among breathing pyrochlore compounds for being in the nearly decoupled limit where inter-tetrahedron interactions are weak, hosting isolated clusters or "molecular magnet" like tetrahedra of magnetic ytterbium (Yb3+) ions. In this work, we present the first study carried out on single-crystal samples of the breathing pyrochlore Ba3Yb2Zn5O11, using a variety of magnetometry and neutron scattering techniques along with theoretical modeling. We employ inelastic neutron scattering to investigate the magnetic dynamics as a function of applied field (with respect to both magni…
A new pyrochlore compound, NaCaNi$_2$F$_7$, was recently synthesized and has a single magnetic site with spin-1 Ni$^{2+}$. We present zero field (ZF) and longitudinal field (LF) muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements on this pyrochlore. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the most likely muon site is located between two fluorine ions, but off-centre. A characteristic F-$μ$-F muon spin polarization function is observed at high temperatures where Ni spin fluctuations are sufficiently rapid. The Ni$^{2+}$ spins undergo spin freezing into a disordered ground state below 4~K, wi…
We report structural and magnetic properties studies of large high quality single-crystals of the frustrated magnet, Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$. Powder x-ray diffraction analysis confirms that Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ adopts the pyrochlore structure. Room-temperature x-ray diffraction and time-of-flight neutron scattering experiments show that the crystals are stoichiometric in composition with no measurable site disorder. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility shows no magnetic ordering at temperatures down to 0.5 K. Fits to the magnetic susceptibility data using a Curie-Weiss law reveal a…
Cobalt pyrochlore fluoride NaCaCo$_2$F$_7$ is a disordered frustrated magnet composed of Co$^{2+}$ ions with an effective spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ magnetic moment and exhibits spin freezing below $T_f \sim$2.4 K. We perform ultrasound velocity measurements on a single crystal of the cubic NaCaCo$_2$F$_7$. The temperature dependence of the bulk modulus (the breathing elastic mode) exhibits Curie-type softening upon cooling below $\sim$20 K down to $T_f$, which is suppressed by the magnetic field. This Curie-type softening should be a precursor to the enhancement of the strength of exchange disorder v…
When the spins on the frustrated pyrochlore lattice obey the celebrated 2-$in$-2-$out$ ice rule, they stay in a correlated disordered phase and break the third law of thermodynamics. Similarly, if the atomic ions on the pyrochlore lattice move in and outward of the tetrahedra, they may obey a constraint resembling the ice rule. We discover that a model for pyrochlore molybdates $A_2$Mo$_2$O$_7$ ($A=$Y, Dy, Tb) exhibits a "supercooled ice" state of the displacement degrees of freedom of Mo$^{4+}$ ions, when we take account of the Jahn-Teller (JT) effect. The JT effect occurs when the lattice di…
While the Heisenberg model for magnetic Mott insulators on planar lattice structures is comparatively well understood in the case of transition metal ions, the intrinsic spin-orbit entanglement of 4f magnetic ions on such lattices shows fascinating new physics largely due to corresponding strong anisotropies both in their single-ion and their exchange properties. We show here that the Yb delafossites, containing perfect magnetic Yb$^{3+}$ triangular lattice planes with pseudospin $s=1/2$ at low temperatures, are an ideal platform to study these new phenomena. Competing frustrated interactions …
High-frequency ($f$ = 190 GHz) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) at magnetic fields up to 12 T as well as Q-band ($f$ = 34.1 GHz) EPR were performed on single crystals of the molecular wheel CsFe$_8$. In this molecule, eight Fe(III) ions, which are coupled by nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic (AF) Heisenberg exchange interactions, form a nearly perfect ring. The angle-dependent EPR data allow for the accurate determination of the spin Hamiltonian parameters of the lowest spin multiplets with $S \leq$ 4. Furthermore, the data can well be reproduced by a dimer model with a uniaxial anisotro…
We report systematic low temperature measurements of the DC magnetization, AC susceptibility, and heat capacity of dysprosium pyrogermanate (Dy2Ge2O7) single crystal and powder samples. Our results confirm that Dy2Ge2O7 is an anisotropic antiferromagnet. The isothermal field dependent magnetization and the integrated magnetic entropy both indicate that the Dy3+ ions behave as Ising-like spins, analogous to those in the pyrochlore spin ice materials. Both single-spin and collective spin relaxation phenomena appear to lead to spin freezing in this material, again in analogy to observations in th…
