Given a fixed quadratic extension K of Q, we consider the distribution of elements in K of norm 1 (denoted N). When K is an imaginary quadratic extension, N is naturally embedded in the unit circle in C and we show that it is equidistributed with respect to inclusion as ordered by the absolute Weil height. By Hilbert's Theorem 90, an element in N can be written as α/\barα for some α\in O_K, which yields another ordering of \mathcal N given by the minimal norm of the associated algebraic integers. When K is imaginary we also show that N is equidistributed in the unit circle under this norm ordering. When K is a real quadratic extension, we show that N is equidistributed with respect to norm, under the map β\mapsto \log| β| \bmod{\log | ε^2 |} where εis a fundamental unit of O_K.
We consider the analogue of the quantum unique ergodicity conjecture for holomorphic Hecke eigenforms on compact arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces. We show that this conjecture follows from nontrivial bounds for Hecke eigenvalues summed over quadratic progressions. Our reduction provides an analogue for the compact case of a criterion established by Luo--Sarnak for the case of the non-compact modular surface. The novelty is that known proofs of such criteria have depended crucially upon Fourier expansions, which are not available in the compact case. Unconditionally, we establish a twisted varian…
Averaging over imaginary quadratic fields, we prove, quantitatively, the equidistribution of CM points associated to 3-torsion classes in the class group. We conjecture that this equidistribution holds for points associated to ideals of any fixed odd order. We prove a partial equidistribution result in this direction and present empirical evidence.
We show that the shape of a complex cubic field lies on the geodesic of the modular surface defined by the field's trace-zero form. We also prove a general such statement for all orders in étale Q-algebras. Applying a method of Manjul Bhargava and Piper H to results of Bhargava and Ariel Shnidman, we prove that the shapes lying on a fixed geodesic become equidistributed with respect to the hyperbolic measure as the discriminant of the complex cubic field goes to infinity. We also show that the shape of a complex cubic field is a complete invariant (within the family of all cubic fields).
We prove an effective equidistribution theorem for orbits of horospherical subgroups of $\mathrm{SO}(2, 2)$ and $\mathrm{SO}(3, 1)$ in quotients of $\mathrm{SL}_4(\mathbb{R})$ with a polynomial error term. In a forthcoming paper, we will use this theorem to prove an effective version of the Oppenheim conjecture for indefinite quadratic forms of signature $(2, 2)$ or $(3, 1)$ with a polynomial error rate.
Let $G=$SL$(2,R)\ltimes(R^2)^{\oplus k}$ and let $Γ$ be a congruence subgroup of SL$(2,Z)\ltimes(Z^2)^{\oplus k}$. We prove a polynomially effective asymptotic equidistribution result for special types of unipotent orbits in $Γ\backslash G$ which project to pieces of closed horocycles in SL$(2,Z)\backslash$SL$(2,R)$. As an application, we prove an effective quantitative Oppenheim type result for the quadratic form $(m_1-α)^2+(m_2-β)^2-(m_3-α)^2-(m_4-β)^2$, for $(α,β)$ of Diophantine type, following the approach by Marklof [24] using theta sums.
Upon quotienting by units, the elements of norm 1 in a number field $K$ form a countable subset of a torus of dimension $r_1 + r_2 - 1$ where $r_1$ and $r_2$ are the numbers of real and pairs of complex embeddings. When $K$ is Galois with cyclic Galois group we demonstrate that this countable set is equidistributed in a finite cover of this torus with respect to a natural partial ordering induced by Hilbert's Theorem 90.
We study two closely related problems stemming from the random wave conjecture for Maass forms. The first problem is bounding the $L^4$-norm of a Maass form in the large eigenvalue limit; we complete the work of Spinu to show that the $L^4$-norm of an Eisenstein series $E(z,1/2+it_g)$ restricted to compact sets is bounded by $\sqrt{\log t_g}$. The second problem is quantum unique ergodicity in shrinking sets; we show that by averaging over the centre of hyperbolic balls in $Γ\backslash \mathbb{H}$, quantum unique ergodicity holds for almost every shrinking ball whose radius is larger than the …
In this paper we provide local test vector for Waldspurger's period integral, when the level of the representation $π_v$ is sufficiently large compared to the level of the character $Ω_v$ over quadratic extension, while allowing joint ramifications. The test vectors we shall use are variants of classical newforms, and the size of the resulting local integral is asymptotically the inverse of convexity bound for $L(Π\otimesΩ,1/2)$. Such test vectors are used to recover Gross-Prasad type test vectors. We also get vanishing result for local integral when using other test vectors. This phenomenon i…
The equidistribution of roots of quadratic congruences with prime moduli depends crucially upon effective bounds for a special Weyl linear form. Duke, Friedlander and Iwaniec discovered a strong estimate for this Weyl linear form when the quadratic polynomial has negative discriminant. Tóth established an analogous but weaker bound when the quadratic polynomial has positive discriminant. We obtain a stronger estimate for the Weyl linear form for quadratics of positive discriminants.
We establish effective counting and equidistribution results for lattice points in families of domains in hyperbolic spaces, of any dimension and over any field. The domains we focus on are defined as product sets with respect to the Iwasawa decomposition. Several classical Diophantine problems can be reduced to counting lattice points in such domains, including distribution of shortest solution to the gcd equation, and angular distribution of primitive vectors in the plane. We give an explicit and effective solution to these problems, and extend them to imaginary quadratic number fields. Furt…
Let $k$ be a number field. We study how well can finite sets of $\mathcal O_k$ equidistribute modulo powers of prime ideals, for all prime ideals at the same time. Our main result states that the optimal rate of equidistribution in $\mathcal O_k$ predicted by the local contstraints cannot be achieved unless $k=\mathcal Q$. We deduce that $\mathcal Q$ is the only number field where the ring of integers $\mathcal O_k$ admits a simultaneous $\frak p$-ordering, answering a question of Bhargava. Along the way we establish a non-trivial upper bound on the number of solutions $x\in \mathcal O_k$ of t…
We study the equidistribution of multiplicatively defined sets, such as the squarefree integers, quadratic non-residues or primitive roots, in sets which are described in an additive way, such as sumsets or Hilbert cubes. In particular, we show that if one fixes any proportion less than $40\%$ of the digits of all numbers of a given binary bit length, then the remaining set still has the asymptotically expected number of squarefree integers. Next, we investigate the distribution of primitive roots modulo a large prime $p$, establishing a new upper bound on the largest dimension of a Hilbert cu…
In this article, we compute the Petersson norm of a family of weight one cusp forms constructed by Hecke and express it in terms of the Rademacher symbol and the regulator of real quadratic field.
We prove an upper bound for the length of an arithmetic progression represented by an irreducible integral binary quadratic form or a norm form, which depends only on the form and the progression's common difference. For quadratic forms, this improves significantly upon an earlier result of Dey and Thangadurai.
