We consider bipartite mixed states in a $d\otimes d$ quantum system. We say that $ρ$ is PPT if its partial transpose $1 \otimes T (ρ)$ is positive semidefinite, and otherwise $ρ$ is NPT. The well-known Werner states are divided into three types: (a) the separable states (the same as the PPT states); (b) the one-distillable states (necessarily NPT); and (c) the NPT states which are not one-distillable. We give several different formulations and provide further evidence for validity of the conjecture that the Werner states of type (c) are not two-distillable.
Assuming the validity of a conjecture in quant-ph/9910026 and quant-ph/9910022 we show that the distillable entanglement for two bipartite states, each of which individually has zero distillable entanglement, can be nonzero. We show that this also implies that the distillable entanglement is not a convex function. Our example consists of the tensor product of a bound entangled state based on an unextendible product basis with a Werner state which lies in the class of conjectured undistillable states.
We show that the maximum fidelity obtained by a p.p.t. distillation protocol is given by the solution to a certain semidefinite program. This gives a number of new lower and upper bounds on p.p.t. distillable entanglement (and thus new upper bounds on 2-locally distillable entanglement). In the presence of symmetry, the semidefinite program simplifies considerably, becoming a linear program in the case of isotropic and Werner states. Using these techniques, we determine the p.p.t. distillable entanglement of asymmetric Werner states and ``maximally correlated'' states. We conclude with a discu…

In this article, we introduce a framework for entanglement quantification of photon pairs represented by two-qubit Werner states. The measurement scheme is based on the symmetric informationally complete POVM. To make the framework realistic, we impose the Poisson noise on the measured two-photon coincidences. For various settings, numerical simulations were performed to evaluate the efficiency of the framework.
We consider controllability of two conjugate observables Z and X by two parties with classical communication. The ability is specified by two alternative tasks, (i) agreement on Z and (ii) preparation of an eigenstate of X with use of an extra communication channel. We prove that their feasibility is equivalent to that of key distillation if the extra channel is quantum, and to that of entanglement distillation if it is classical. This clarifies the distinction between two entanglement measures, distillable key and distillable entanglement.
We show that any bipartite quantum state of rank four is distillable, when the partial transpose of the state has at least one negative eigenvalue, i.e., the state is NPT. For this purpose we prove that if the partial transpose of a two-qutrit NPT state has two non-positive eigenvalues, then the state is distillable. We further construct a parametrized two-qutrit NPT entangled state of rank five which is not 1-distillable, and show that it is not $n$-distillable for any given $n$ when the parameter is sufficiently small. This state has the smallest rank among all 1-undistillable NPT states. We…
We investigate the two-sided symmetric extendibility problem of Werner states. The interplay of the unitary symmetry of these states and the inherent bipartite permutation symmetry of the extendibility scenario allows us to map this problem into the ground state problem of a highly symmetric spin-model Hamiltonian. We solve this ground state problem analytically by utilizing the representation theory of SU(d), in particular a result related to the dominance order of Young diagrams in Littlewood-Richarson decompositions. As a result, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the extendi…
Distillable entanglement ($E_d$) is one of the acceptable measures of entanglement of mixed states. Based on discrimination through local operation and classical communication, this paper gives $E_d$ for two classes of orthogonal multipartite maximally entangled states.
We show that all entangled Gaussian states of two infinite dimensional systems can be distilled to maximally entangled states in finite dimensions. The distillation protocol involves local squeezing operations, local homodyne measurements with ancilla systems prepared in coherent states as well as local joint measurements of the total number operator of two copies of the state.
We introduce a formalism that connections entanglement witnesses and the distillation and activation properties of a state. We apply this formalism to two cases: First, we rederive the results presented in quant-ph/0104095 by Eggeling et al., namely that on copy of any bipartite state with non--positive partial transpose (NPPT) is either distillable, or activable. Second, we show that there exist three--partite NPPT states, with the property that two copies can neither be distilled, nor activated.
We consider the problem of reproducing the correlations obtained by arbitrary local projective measurements on the two-qubit Werner state $ρ= v |ψ_- > <ψ_- | + (1- v ) \frac{1}{4}$ via a local hidden variable (LHV) model, where $|ψ_- >$ denotes the singlet state. We show analytically that these correlations are local for $ v = 999\times689\times{10^{-6}}$ $\cos^4(π/50) \simeq 0.6829$. In turn, as this problem is closely related to a purely mathematical one formulated by Grothendieck, our result implies a new bound on the Grothendieck constant $K_G(3) \leq 1/v \simeq 1.4644$. We also present a …
Werner states are multipartite quantum states that are invariant under the diagonal conjugate action of the unitary group. This paper gives a complete characterization of their entanglement that is independent of the underlying local Hilbert space: for every entangled Werner state there exists a dimension-free entanglement witness. The construction of such a witness is formulated as an optimization problem. To solve it, two semidefinite programming hierarchies are introduced. The first one is derived using real algebraic geometry applied to positive polynomials in the entries of a Gram matrix,…
The dynamics of entanglement between two-level atoms immersed in a common photon reservoir at finite temperature is investigated. It is shown that in the regime of strong correlations there are nontrivial asymptotic states which can be interpreted in terms of thermal generalization of Werner states.
It is known that he bipartite quantum states, with rank strictly smaller than the maximum of the ranks of its two reduced states, are distillable by local operations and classical communication. Our first main result is that this is also true for NPT states with rank equal to this maximum. (A state is PPT if the partial transpose of its density matrix is positive semidefinite, and otherwise it is NPT.) This was conjectured first in 1999 in the special case when the two local ranks are equal. Our second main result provides a complete solution of the separability problem for bipartite states of…
Bell-inequality violation and entanglement, measured by Wootters' concurrence and negativity, of two qubits initially in Werner or Werner-like states coupled to thermal reservoirs are analyzed within the master equation approach. It is shown how this simple decoherence process leads to generation of states manifesting the relativity of two-qubit entanglement measures.
Entanglement is not only the resource that fuels many quantum technologies but also plays a key role for some of the most profound open questions of fundamental physics. Experiments controlling quantum systems at the single quantum level may shed light on these puzzles. However, measuring, or even bounding, entanglement experimentally has proven to be an outstanding challenge, especially when the prepared quantum states are mixed. We use entropic uncertainty relations for bipartite systems to derive measurable lower bounds on distillable entanglement. We showcase these bounds by applying them …
In this paper we study the nonlocal properties of two-qubit Werner states parameterized by the visibility parameter 0<p<1. New family of Bell inequalities are constructed which prove the two-qubit Werner states to be nonlocal for the parameter range 0.7056<p<1. This is slightly wider than the range 0.7071<p<1, corresponding to the violation of the Clauser-Horne-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequality. This answers a question posed by Gisin in the positive, i.e., there exist Bell inequalities which are more efficient than the CHSH inequality in the sense that they are violated by a wider range of two-qu…
The nonlinear positive map of density matrix of two-qubit Werner state called nonlinear channel is studied. The map of density matrix is realized by rational function. The influence of the map onto the entanglement properties of the transformed density matrix is discussed. The violation of Bell inequality (CHSH inequality) for the two-qubit state is investigated. The nonlinear channels under discussion create the entangled state from separable Werner state. The quantum spin-tomograms of the states are studied.
In this paper, we investigate comparatively the behaviors of quantum discord and concurrence for Werner states based on two bipartite entangled squeezed states. The maximally entangled squeezed states are regarded as a perfect-Werner states, while the non-maximally entangled squeezed states are called quasi-Werner states. We show that, the behavior of the quantum correlations keep unchanged for these two types of states. However, the quantum correlations amount presents in perfect-Werner states is very higher than that presents in quasi-Werner ones. Furthermore, we show that for large values o…
In this paper, we write down the separable Werner state in a two-qubit system explicitly as a convex combination of product states, which is different from the convex combination obtained by Wootters' method. The Werner state in a two-qubit system has a single real parameter and varies from inseparable state to separable state according to the value of its parameter. We derive a hidden variable model that is induced by our decomposed form for the separable Werner state. From our explicit form of the convex combination of product states, we understand the following: The critical point of the pa…

We discuss a model of two nonlinear Kerr-like oscillators, mutually coupled and excited by parametric process. We show that the system's evolution, starting from Werner-like states, remains closed within a small set of two-mode n-photon states the system, and pure two-qubit entangled state can be generated. For some initial Werner-like states delayed entanglement generation can be observed. We investigate the influence of two damping mechanisms on the system's evolution. We show that for the both cases, the entanglement can survive despite the presence of damping, and the effects of sudden ent…
Choosing four entangled stets to form an orthogonal and complete basis for a two-particle system, we argue that a local hidden variable model should give the probability of each entangled state if the two-particle system is described by a mixed state. Under this condition, a new Bell inequality is derived for the Werner states, and a nonlocality proof can be given for nonsequential measurements PACS number: 03.65.Bz
We classify the completely-positive maps acting on two $d$-dimensional systems which commute with all $U\otimes U$ unitaries, where $U\in SU(d)$. This set of operations map Werner states to Werner states. We find a simple condition for a map being implementable by stochastic local operations and classical communication (SLOCC). We show that all PPT-preserving maps can be implemented by SLOCC. This can be used to prove that the entanglement of Werner states cannot be stochastically increased, even if we allow PPT entanglement for free.
It is well known that any entangled mixed state in $2\otimes 2$ systems can be purified via infinite copies of the mixed state. But can one distill a pure maximally entangled state from finite copies of a mixed state in any bipartite system by local operation and classical communication? This is more meaningful in practical application. We give a necessary and sufficient condition of this distillability. This condition can be expressed as: there exists distillable-subspaces. According to this condition, one can judge whether a mixed state is distillable or not easily. We also analyze some prop…
Present work is an attempt to compare quantum discord and quantum entanglement of Werner states formed with the four bipartite entangled coherent states (ECS) used recently for quantum teleportation of a qubit encoded in superposed coherent state. Out of these, two based on maximally ECS are exactly similar to the perfect Werner state, while the rest two, based on non-maximally ECS, which are called quasi-Werner states behave in somewhat different ways and their quantum discord and entanglement depends on the coherent amplitude and the measurement basis.
We propose a theoretical scheme of quantum nondemolition measurement of two-qubit Werner state. We discuss our scheme with the two qubits restricted in a local place and then extend the scheme to the case in which two qubits are separated. We also consider the experimental realization of our scheme based on cavity quantum electrodynamics. It is very interesting that our scheme is robust against the dissipative effects introduced by the probe process. We also give a brief interpretation of our scheme finally.
We study the influence of noisy environment on the evolution of two-atomic system in the presence of collective damping. Generation of Werner states as asymptotic states of evolution is described. We also show that for some initial states the amount of entanglement is preserved during the evolution.
Recently, the authors [arXiv quant-ph 1209.3706] studied quantum discord for Werner mixed states based on the four entangled coherent states, which are used for quantum teleportation of single qubit information encoded in superposed coherent state and compared it with entanglement of formation. In the present paper, we consider two more general bipartite superposed coherent states and get two quasi-Werner states. We study quantum discord and entanglement of formation for these states and compare them.
We first show that partial transposition for pure and mixed two-particle states in a discrete $N$-dimensional Hilbert space is equivalent to a change in sign of the momentum of one of the particles in the Wigner function for the state. We then show that it is possible to formulate an uncertainty relation for two-particle Hermitian operators constructed in terms of Schwinger operators, and study its role in detecting entanglement in a two-particle state: the violation of the uncertainty relation for a partially transposed state implies that the original state is entangled. This generalizes a re…

We use matched quantum entanglement witnesses to study the separable criteria of continuous variable states. The witness can be written as an identity operator minus a Gaussian operator. The optimization of the witness then is transformed to an eigenvalue problem of a Gaussian kernel integral equation. It follows a separable criterion not only for symmetric Gaussian quantum states, but also for non-Gaussian states prepared by photon adding to or/and subtracting from symmetric Gaussian states. Based on Fock space numeric calculation, we obtain an entanglement witness for more general two-mode s…
We introduce a Werner-like mixture [R. F. Werner, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 40}, 4277 (1989)] by considering two correlated but different degrees of freedom, one with discrete variables and the other with continuous variables. We evaluate the mixedness of this state, and its degree of entanglement establishing its usefulness for quantum information processing like quantum teleportation. Then, we provide its tomographic characterization. Finally, we show how such a mixture can be generated and measured in a trapped system like one electron in a Penning trap.
Entanglement is one of the essential resources in quantum information and communication technology (QICT). The entanglement thus far explored and applied to QICT has been pure and distillable entanglement. Yet there is another type of entanglement, called 'bound entanglement', which is not distillable by local operations and classical communication (LOCC). We demonstrate the experimental 'activation' of the bound entanglement held in the four-qubit Smolin state, unleashing its immanent entanglement in distillable form, with the help of auxiliary two-qubit entanglement and LOCC. We anticipate t…
We ascertain, following ideas of Arnesen, Bose, and Vedral concerning thermal entanglement [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 87} (2001) 017901] and using the statistical tool called {\it entropic non-triviality} [Lamberti, Martin, Plastino, and Rosso, Physica A {\bf 334} (2004) 119], that there is a one to one correspondence between (i) the mixing coefficient $x$ of a Werner state, on the one hand, and (ii) the temperature $T$ of the one-dimensional Heisenberg two-spin chain with a magnetic field $B$ along the $z-$axis, on the other one. This is true for each value of $B$ below a certain critical value $…
The quantum discord is used as measure of quantum correlations for two families of multipartite coherent states. The first family interpolates between generalized GHZ states and generalized Werner states. The second one is an interpolation between generalized GHZ and the ground state of the multipartite quantum system. Two inequivalent ways to split the system in a pair of qubits are introduced. The explicit expressions of quantum quantum discord in multipartite coherent states are derived. Its evaluation uses the Koashi-Winter relation in optimizing the conditional entropy. The temporal evolu…

We demonstrate a hierarchy of various classes of quantum correlations on experimentally prepared two-qubit Werner-like states with controllable white noise. Werner states, which are white-noise-affected Bell states, are prototypal examples for studying such a hierarchy as a function of the amount of white noise. We experimentally generated Werner states and their generalizations, i.e., partially entangled pure states affected by white noise. These states enabled us to study the hierarchy of the following classes of correlations: separability, entanglement, steering in three- and two-measuremen…
In this paper we study the influence of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction on quantum correlations in two qubit Werner states and maximally entangled mixed states (MEMS). We consider our system as a closed system of a qubits pair and one auxiliary qubit which interact with any one of the qubit of the pair through DM interaction. We show that DM interaction, taken along any direction (x or y or z), does not affect two qubit Werner states. On the other hand the MEMS are affected by x and z components of DM interaction and remain unaffected by the y component. Further, we find that the state …
We investigate the violation of Bell-type inequalities for two-qubit Werner-like states parametrized by the positive parameter 0<p<1. We use an unbalanced homodyne detection scheme to obtain the quantum mechanical probabilities. A violation of the Bell-Wigner and Janssens inequalities is obtained for a large range of the parameter p. The range given by these inequalities is greater than the one given by the Clauser-Horne inequality. The range in which a violation is attained actually coincides with the range where the Werner-like states are known to be nonseparabel, i.e., for p>1/3. However, t…
Quantum Discord (QD) is a measure of the total quantum non-local correlations of a quantum system. The formalism of quantum discord has been applied to various two-qubit mixed states and it has been reported that there is a non-zero quantum discord even when the states are unentangled. To this end, we have calculated the Quantum Discord for higher than two qubit mixed state, that is, the generalized n-qubit Werner state with a bipartite split. We found that the QD saturates to a straight line with unit slope in the thermodynamic limit. Qualitative studies of entanglement between the two subsys…
Disentanglement and loss of quantum correlations due to one global collective noise effect are described for two-qubit Schrödinger cat and Werner states of a four level trapped ion quantum system. Once the Jaynes-Cummings ionic interactions are mapped onto a Dirac spinor structure, the elementary tools for computing quantum correlations of two-qubit ionic states are provided. With two-qubit quantum numbers related to the total angular momentum and to its projection onto the direction of an external magnetic field (which lifts the degeneracy of the ion's internal levels), a complete analytical …
We study nonclassical correlations beyond entanglement in a family of two-mode non-Gaussian states which represent the continuous-variable counterpart of two-qubit Werner states. We evaluate quantum discord and other quantumness measures obtaining exact analytical results in special instances, and upper and lower bounds in the general case. Non-Gaussian measurements such as photon counting are in general necessary to solve the optimization in the definition of quantum discord, whereas Gaussian measurements are strictly suboptimal for the considered states. The gap between Gaussian and optimal …
Pairwise quantum correlations in the ground state of a N-spins antiferromagnetic chain described by the Heisenberg model with nearest neighbor exchange coupling are investigated. By varying a single coupling between two neighboring sites it is possible to drive spins from entangled to disentangled states, reversibly. For even N the two-spin density matrix is written in the form of a Werner state, allowing identification of the weight parameter with the usual spin-spin correlation function $\langle S_i^z \, S_j^z \rangle = Γ_{ij}$. The correlation functions show universal behavior in the $Γ$-de…
The significance of photon addition in engineering the single- and two-mode (bipartite correlations) nonclassical properties of a quantum state is investigated. Specifically, we analyzed the behavior of the Wigner function of two quasi-Werner states theoretically constructed by superposing two normalized bipartite $m$-photon added coherent states. This allowed us to quantify the amount of nonclassicality present in the quantum states using Wigner logarithmic negativity (WLN), while quantum correlations are measured in terms of concurrence, entanglement of formation, and quantum discord. The WL…
A general Werner-type state is studied from two viewpoints: (i) an application of dynamical interaction of the objective system with its environment, represented by a unital positive operator-valued measure (POVM), which ensures increase of entropy, makes the system evolve from an initial pure state to a mixed state of the Werner type, and (ii) the space of the objective system is constrained to have a given value of the fidelity. Then, the maximum entropy principle is shown to yield the Werner-type state as a canonical ensemble with the projector Hamiltonian. This novel observation is illustr…
Quantum steering, a type of quantum correlation with unique asymmetry, has important applications in asymmetric quantum information tasks. We consider a new quantum steering scenario in which one half of a two-qubit Werner state is sequentially measured by multiple Alices and the other half by multiple Bobs. We find that the maximum number of Alices who can share steering with a single Bob increases from 2 to 5 when the number of measurement settings $N$ increases from 2 to 16. Furthermore, we find a counterintuitive phenomenon that for a fixed $N$, at most 2 Alices can share steering with 2 B…
We study the efficacy of two-qubit mixed entangled states as resources for quantum teleportation. We first consider two maximally entangled mixed states, viz., the Werner state\cite{werner}, and a class of states introduced by Munro {\it et al.} \cite{munro}. We show that the Werner state when used as teleportation channel, gives rise to better average teleportation fidelity compared to the latter class of states for any finite value of mixedness. We then introduce a non-maximally entangled mixed state obtained as a convex combination of a two-qubit entangled mixed state and a two-qubit separa…
We realize Landau-Streater (LS) and Werner-Holevo (WH) quantum channels for qutrits on the IBM quantum computers. These channels correspond to interaction between the qutrit and its environment that result in the globally unitarily covariant qutrit transformation violating multiplicativity of the maximal $p$-norm. Our realization of LS and WH channels is based on embedding qutrit states into states of two qubits and using single-qubit and two-qubit CNOT gates to implement the specific interaction. We employ the standard quantum gates hence the developed algorithm suits any quantum computer. We…
