We discuss an interplay between the Fermi-liquid (FL) theory and diagrammatic perturbative approach to interacting Fermi systems. In the FL theory for Galilean-invariant systems, mass renormalization $m^*/m$ comes exclusively from fermions at the Fermi surface. We show that in a diagrammatic perturbation theory the same result for $m^*/m$ comes from fermions both at and away from the Fermi surface. The equivalence of the FL and pertubative approaches is based on a particular relation between self-energy contributions from high- and low-energy fermions. We argue that care has to be exercised in the renormalization group approach to a FL in order not to miss the high-energy contribution to $m^*/m$. As particular examples, we discuss $m^*/m$ and the quasiparticle residue $Z$ for 2D and 3D systems with both SU(2) and SU(N) symmetries, and with a short-range interaction. We derive an expression for the anisotropic part of the Fermi-liquid vertex in the large-$N$ limit of the SU(N) case.
We report a two-step density-matrix renormalization-group computation of the equal-time single-particle Green's function, the density-density correlations, and the low-frequency spectral weight function of a spinless fermion model in an anisotropic two-dimensional lattice at half-filling. We find that at weak couplings the density-density correlations have the universal decay of a Fermi liquid; the spectral weight function displays a sharp quasi-particle peak. But in the vicinity of a quantum critical point, these correlations strongly deviate from a Fermi liquid prediction and a pseudogap ope…
A free Fermi gas has, famously, a superconducting susceptibility that diverges logarithmically at zero temperature. In this paper we ask whether this is still true for a Fermi liquid and find that the answer is that it does {\it not}. From the perspective of the renormalization group for interacting fermions, the question arises because a repulsive interaction in the Cooper channel is a marginally irrelevant operator at the Fermi liquid fixed point and thus is also expected to infect various physical quantities with logarithms. Somewhat surprisingly, at least from the renormalization group vie…
We study the one dimensional t-t'-J model for generic couplings using two complementary theories, the extremely correlated Fermi liquid theory and time-dependent density matrix renormalization group over a broad energy scale. The two methods provide a unique insight into the strong momentum dependence of the self-energy of this prototypical non-Fermi liquid, described at low energies as a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. We also demonstrate its intimate relationship to spin-charge separation, i.e. the splitting of Landau quasiparticles of higher dimensions into two constituents, driven by strong qua…
We study the interplay of interactions and disorder in a one-dimensional fermion lattice coupled adiabatically to infinite reservoirs. We employ both the functional renormalization group (FRG) as well as matrix product state techniques, which serve as an accurate benchmark for small systems. Using the FRG, we compute the length- and temperature-dependence of the conductance averaged over $10^4$ samples for lattices as large as $10^{5}$ sites. We identify regimes in which non-ohmic power law behavior can be observed and demonstrate that the corresponding exponents can be understood by adapting …
Based on exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, we show that an anisotropic triangle lattice Heisenberg spin model has three distinct quantum phases. In particular, a spin-liquid phase is present in the weak interchain coupling regime, which is characterized by an exponentially-decaying spin correlator along the weaker coupling direction and a quasi-one-dimensional spin structure factor along the chain direction, in agreement with experiments on the Cs2CuCl4 compounds. In the obtained phase diagram, the spin liquid phase is found to persist up to a relati…
The ground-state and low-energy excitations of quantum Hall systems are studied by the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. From the ground-state pair correlation functions and low-energy excitions, the ground-state phase diagram is determined, which consists of incompressible liquid states, Fermi liquid type compressible liquid states, and many kinds of CDW states called stripe, bubble and Wigner crystal. The spin transition and the domain formation are studied at v=2/3. The evolution from composite fermion liquid state to an excitonic state in bilayer systems is investigated a…
We analyze how the logarithmic renormalizations in the Cooper channel affect the non-analytic temperature dependence of the specific heat coefficient γ(T) - γ(0)=A(T)T in a 2D Fermi liquid. We show that A(T) is expressed exactly in terms of the fully renormalized backscattering amplitude which includes the renormalization in the Cooper channel. In contrast to the 1D case, both charge and spin components of the backscattering amplitudes are subject to this renormalization. We show that the logarithmic renormalization of the charge amplitude vanishes for a flat Fermi surface, when the system bec…
The crossover from fluctuating atomic constituents to a collective state as one lowers temperature or energy is at the heart of the dynamical mean-field theory description of the solid state. We demonstrate that the numerical renormalization group is a viable tool to monitor this crossover in a real-materials setting. The renormalization group flow from high to arbitrarily small energy scales clearly reveals the emergence of the Fermi-liquid state of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. We find a two-stage screening process, where orbital fluctuations are screened at much higher energies than spin fluctuations, and…
We use Wilsons weak coupling ``momentum'' shell renormalization group method to show that two-particle interaction terms commonly neglected in bosonization of one-dimensional correlated electron systems with open boundaries are indeed irrelevant in the renormalization group sense. Our study provides a more solid ground for many investigations of Luttinger liquids with open boundaries.
The density of low energy particle-hole excitations is non-analytic in a singular Fermi-liquid, but it is altered on entering a superconducting state in which, in the pure limit, it vanishes asymptotically at the chemical potential and in general is analytic. The single-particle excitations in the superconducting states are then quasi-particles so that a form of Landau theory may be constructed for thermodynamic and transport properties in the superconducting state. In this theory, the renormalization of measurable properties due to quasi-particle interactions, such as specific heat, compressi…
We study the self-energy of phonons, magnetoelastically coupled to the two-dimensional Kitaev spin-model on the honeycomb lattice. Fractionalization of magnetic moments into mobile Majorana matter and a static $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ gauge field lead to a continuum of relaxation processes comprising two channels. Thermal flux excitations, which act as an emergent disorder, strongly affect the phonon renormalization. Above the flux proliferation temperature, the dispersion of a narrow quasiparticle-hole channel is suppressed in favor of broad and only weakly momentum dependent features, covering large…
We have performed a photoemission study of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$TiO$_{3+y/2}$ near the filling-control metal-insulator transition (MIT) as a function of hole doping. Mass renormalization deduced from the spectral weight and the width of the quasi-particle band around the chemical potential $μ$ is compared with that deduced from the electronic specific heat. The result implies that, near the MIT, band narrowing occurs strongly in the vicinity of $μ$. Spectral weight transfer occurs from the coherent to the incoherent parts upon antiferromagnetic ordering, which we associate with the partial gap open…
Re-studying the non-fermi liquid one-particle Green function (NFLGF) we have extended the work of A. Balatsky (Phil. Mag. Lett. 68, 251 (1993)) and L. Yin and S. Chakravarty (Int. J. Mod. Phys. B 10, 805 (1996)), among others. We used the moment approach of W. Nolting (Z. Phys. 255, 25 (1972)) to compute the unknown parameters of the NFLGF's in the framework of the Hubbard model. The zeroth order momentum requires that our one-particle Green function describe fermionic degrees of freedom. In order to satisfy the first order sum rule a renormalization, $γ\neq 1$, of the free electron mass is ca…
We study four-lead junction of semi-infinite wires by using fermionic representation in the scattering state formalism. The model of spinless fermions with short-range Luttinger liquid type interaction is used. We find the renormalization group (RG) equations for the conductances of the system in the first order of fermionic interaction. In contrast to the well-known cases of two-lead and three-lead junctions, we show that the RG equations cannot be expressed solely in terms of conductances. The appearing ambiguity is resolved by choosing a certain sign defined at the level of S-matrix, but hi…
In quasi-1D conducting nanowires spin-orbit coupling destructs spin-charge separation, intrinsic to Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL). We study renormalization of a single scattering impurity in a such liquid. Performing bosonization of low-energy excitations and exploiting perturbative renormalization analysis we extend the phase portrait in $K_s$ - $K_c$ space, obtained previously for TLL with decoupled spin-charge channels.
We combine the pseudofermion functional renormalization group (PFFRG) method with a self-consistent Fock-like mean-field scheme to calculate low-energy effective theories for emergent spinon excitations in spin-1/2 quantum spin liquids. Using effective spin interactions from PFFRG as an input for the Fock equation and allowing for the most general types of free spinon ansätze as classified by the projective symmetry group (PSG) method, we are able to systematically determine spinon band structures for spin-liquid candidate systems beyond mean-field theory. We apply this approach to the antifer…
The low-temperature state of the quantum spin liquid candidate $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$(CN)$_{3}$ emerges via an anomaly at $T^{*}\sim6$ K. Although signatures of this anomaly have been revealed in various quantities, its origin has remained unclear. Here we report inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$(CN)$_{3}$, aiming at studying phonon renormalization effects at $T^{*}$. A drastic change was observed in the phonon damping across $T^{*}$ for a breathing mode of BEDT-TTF dimers at $E=4.7$ meV. The abrupt change in the phonon damping i…
We study numerically the universal conductance of Luttinger liquids wire with a single impurity via the Muti-scale Entanglement Renormalization Ansatz (MERA). The scale invariant MERA provides an efficient way to extract scaling operators and scaling dimensions for both the bulk and the boundary conformal field theories. By utilizing the key relationship between the conductance tensor and ground-state correlation function, the universal conductance can be evaluated within the framework of the boundary MERA. We construct the boundary MERA to compute the correlation functions and scaling dimensi…
Using functional renormalization group methods, we present a self-consistent calculation of the true Fermi momenta k_F^a (antibonding band) and k_F^b (bonding band) of two spinless interacting metallic chains coupled by small interchain hopping. In the regime where the system is a Luttinger liquid, we find that Delta = k_F^b - k_F^a is self-consistently determined by Delta = Delta_{1} [ 1 + {g}_0^2 ln (Lambda_0 / Delta)^2]^{-1} where g_0 is the dimensionless interchain backscattering interaction, Delta_{1} is the Hartree-Fock result for k_F^{b}-k_F^a, and Lambda_0 is an ultraviolet cutoff. If …
We study in this paper the general properties of a many body system of fermions in arbitrary dimensions assuming that the {\em momentum} of individual fermions are good quantum numbers of the system. We call these systems $k$-Fermi liquids. We show how Fermi liquid, Luttinger liquid (or Fermi liquid with exclusion statistics) and spin-charge separation arises from this framework. Two exactly solvable $k$-Fermi liquid models with spin-charge separation are discussed as examples.
We develop the renormalization group theory of the conductances of N-lead junctions of spinless Luttinger-liquid wires as functions of bias voltages applied to N independent Fermi-liquid reservoirs. Based on the perturbative results up to second order in the interaction we demonstrate that the conductances obey scaling. The corresponding renormalization group $β$ functions are derived up to second order.
Contrary to the longtime and widely conceived belief, we proved that the specific heat coefficient $γ$ --also called Sommerfeld coefficient -- of the interacting Fermion system is not renormalized by the wave-function renormalization factor $Z$ as far as the system remains a Fermi liquid state.
We analyze the Hertz-Moriya-Millis theory of an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point, in the marginal case of two dimensions (d=2,z=2). Up to next-to-leading order in the number of components (N) of the field, we find that logarithmic corrections do not lead to an enhancement of the Landau damping. This is in agreement with a renormalization-group analysis, for arbitrary N. Hence, the logarithmic effects are unable to account for the behavior reportedly observed in inelastic neutron scattering experiments on CeCu_{6-x}Au_x. We also examine the extended dynamical mean-field treatment (local…
We apply the finite-temperature renormalization-group (RG) to a model based on an effective action with a short-range repulsive interaction and a rotation invariant Fermi surface. The basic quantities of Fermi liquid theory, the Landau function and the scattering vertex, are calculated as fixed points of the RG flow in terms of the effective action's interaction function. The classic derivations of Fermi liquid theory, which apply the Bethe-Salpeter equation and amount to summing direct particle-hole ladder diagrams, neglect the zero-angle singularity in the exchange particle-hole loop. As a c…
Motivated by experimental studies that have found signatures of a quantum spin liquid phase in organic crystals whose structure is well described by the two-dimensional triangular lattice, we study the Hubbard model on this lattice at half filling using the infinite-system density matrix renormalization group (iDMRG) method. On infinite cylinders with finite circumference, we identify an intermediate phase between observed metallic behavior at low interaction strength and Mott insulating spin-ordered behavior at strong interactions. Chiral ordering from spontaneous breaking of time-reversal sy…
We use the numerical renormalization group method to study the O(3)-symmetric version of the impurity Anderson model of Coleman and Schofield. This model is of general interest because it displays both Fermi liquid and non-Fermi liquid behaviour, and in the large $U$ limit can be related to the compactified two channel Kondo model of Coleman, Ioffe and Tsvelik. We calculate the thermodynamics for a parameter range which covers the full range of behaviour of the model. We find a non-Fermi liquid fixed point in the isotropic case which is unstable with respect to channel anisotropy.
Recently Hermele et. al claimed that the infrared (IR) fixed point of non-compact $QED_3$ is stable against instanton excitations in the limit of large flavors of massless Dirac fermions [cond-mat/0404751]. We investigate an effect of non-magnetic disorder on the deconfined quantum critical phase dubbed U(1) spin liquid ($U1SL$) in the context of quantum antiferromagnet. In the case of weak disorder the IR fixed point remains stable against the presence of both the instanton excitations and non-magnetic disorder and thus the $U1SL$ is sustained. In the case of strong disorder the IR fixed poin…
It is well-known that, generically, the one-dimensional interacting fermions cannot be described in terms of the Fermi liquid. Instead, they present different phenomenology, that of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid: the Landau quasiparticles are ill-defined, and the fermion occupation number is continuous at the Fermi energy. We demonstrate that suitable fine-tuning of the interaction between fermions can stabilize a peculiar state of one-dimensional matter, which is dissimilar to both the Tomonaga-Luttinger and Fermi liquids. We propose to call this state a quasi-Fermi liquid. Technically speaki…
We calculate numerically the quasiparticle effective mass (m*) renormalization as a function of temperature and electron density in two- and three-dimensional electron systems with long-range Coulomb interaction. In two dimensions, the leading temperature correction is linear and positive with the slope being a universal density independent number in the high density limit. We predict an enhancement of the effective mass at low temperatures and a non-monotonic temperature dependence at higher temperatures (T/T_F ~ 0.1) with the peak shifting toward higher temperatures as density decreases. In …
We propose and test an algorithm to simulate a lattice system of interacting fermions in two spatial dimensions. The approach is an extension of the entanglement renormalization technique [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 220405 (2007)] and the related multi-scale entanglement renormalization ansatz. Benchmark calculations for free and interacting fermions on a lattice of $6\times 6$ sites and periodic boundary conditions confirm the validity of this proposal.
A renormalization scheme for interacting fermionic systems is presented where the renormalization is carried out in terms of the fermionic degrees of freedom. The scheme is based on continuous unitary transformations of the hamiltonian which stays hermitian throughout the renormalization flow, whereby any frequency dependence is avoided. The approach is illustrated in detail for a model of spinless fermions with nearest neighbour repulsion in one dimension. Even though the fermionic degrees of freedom do not provide an easy starting point in one dimension very good results are obtained which a…
We derive an efficient method for treating renormalization contributions at two-loop level within the functional renormalization group in the one-particle irreducible formalism for fermions. It is based on a decomposition of the two-particle vertex in charge, magnetic and pairing channels. The method treats single-particle and collective excitations in all channels on equal footing, allows for the description of symmetry-breaking and captures collective mode fluctuation physics in the infrared. As a first application, we study the superfluid ground state of the two-dimensional attractive Hubba…
We present a Keldysh nonlinear sigma-model approach to the renormalization group analysis of the disordered electron liquid. We include both the Coulomb interaction and Fermi-liquid type interactions in the singlet and triplet channels into the formalism. Based on this model, we reproduce the coupled renormalization group equations for the diffusion coefficient, the frequency, and interaction constants previously derived with the replica model in the imaginary time technique. With the help of source fields coupling to the particle-number and spin densities, we study the density-density and spi…
We discuss renormalization group approaches to strongly interacting Fermi systems, in the context of Landau's theory of Fermi liquids and functional methods, and their application to neutron matter.
We study an extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model including additional anisotropic couplings by using two-dimensional density-matrix renormalization group method. Calculating the gound-state energy, entanglement entropy, and spin-spin correlation functions, we make a phase diagram of the extended Kitaev-Heisenberg model around spin-liquid phase. We find a zigzag antiferromagnetic phase, a ferromagnetic phase, a 120-degree antiferromagnetic phase, and two kinds of incommensurate phases around the Kitaev spin-liquid phase. Furthermore, we study the entanglement spectrum of the model and find that ent…
We investigate the non-Fermi-liquid (NFL) behavior of the impurity Anderson model (IAM) with non-Kramers doublet ground state of the f$^2$ configuration under the tetragonal crystalline electric field (CEF). The low energy spectrum is explained by a combination of the NFL and the local-Fermi-liquid parts which are independent with each other. The NFL part of the spectrum has the same form to that of two-channel-Kondo model (TCKM). We have a parameter range that the IAM shows the $- \ln T$ divergence of the magnetic susceptibility together with the positive magneto resistance. We point out a po…
I apply a two-step density-matrix renormalization group method to the anisotropic two-dimensional tight-binding model. This study, which is a prelude to the study of models of quasi-one dimensional materials, shows the potential power of this approach for anisotropic fermionic models. I find a ground-state energy which agrees with the exact value up to four digits for systems as large as $24 \times 25$. This open new opportunities for simulations of fermions in two dimensions.
Using the natural orbitals renormalization group, we studied the problem of a localized spin- 1/2 impurity coupled to two helical liquids via the Kondo interaction in a quantum spin Hall insulator, based on the Kane-Mele model defined in a finite zigzag graphene nanoribbon. We investigated the influence of the Kondo couplings with the helical liquids on both the static and dynamic properties of the ground state. The number and distinct spatial structures of the active natural orbitals (ANOs), which play essential roles in constructing the ground-state wave function, were first analyzed. Our nu…
The pseudofermion functional renormalization group (pf-FRG) has been put forward as a semi-analytical scheme that, for a given microscopic spin model, allows to discriminate whether the low-temperature states exhibit magnetic ordering or a tendency towards the formation of quantum spin liquids. However, the precise nature of the putative spin liquid ground state has remained hard to infer from the original (single-site) pf-FRG scheme. Here we introduce a cluster pf-FRG approach, which allows for a more stringent connection between a microscopic spin model and its low-temperature spin liquid gr…
We address the problem of the Fermi surface renormalization and the quantum confinement regime (QCR) in the two coupled chains model(TCCM) of spinless fermions. We perform a self-consistent calculation of the renormalization group(RG) flows of the renormalized TCCM couplings and quasiparticle weight. On top of that we take explicitly into account the renormalization of the Fermi surface. The flow of the difference of the renormalized Fermi wave vectors associated with the bonding and antibonding bands has a dramatic effect on the single particle spectrum. Although the quasiparticle amplitude i…
Many quantum mechanical problems (such as dissipative phase fluctuations in metallic and superconducting nanocircuits, or impurity scattering in Luttinger liquids) involve a continuum of bosonic modes with a marginal spectral density diverging as the inverse of energy. We construct a Numerical Renormalization Group in this singular case, with a manageable violation of scale separation at high energy, capturing reliably the low energy physics. The method is demonstrated by a non-perturbative solution over several energy decades for the dynamical conductance of a Luttinger liquid with a single s…
We propose in this paper an effective low-energy theory for interacting fermion systems which supports exclusion statistics. The theory can be viewed as an extension of Landau Fermi liquid theory where besides quasi-particle energy $ξ_{\mathbf{k}}$, the kinetic momentum $\mathbf{k}$ of quasi-particles depends also on quasi-particle occupation numbers as a result of momentum ($k$)-dependent current-current interaction. The dependence of kinetic momentum on quasi-particles excitations leads to change in density of states and exclusion statistics. The properties of this new Fermi liquid state is …
We develop a theory for a generic instability of a Fermi liquid in dimension d>1 against the formation of a Luttinger-liquid-like state. The density of states at the Fermi level is the order parameter for the ensuing quantum phase transition, which is driven by the effective interaction strength. A scaling theory in conjunction with an effective field theoy for clean electrons is used to obtain the critical behavior of observables. In the Fermi-liquid phase the order-parameter susceptibility, which is measurable by tunneling, is predicted to diverge for 1<d<3.
Making a combined use of bosonization and fermionization techniques, we build nonlocal transformations between dual fermion operators, describing junctions of strongly interacting spinful one-dimensional quantum wires. Our approach allows for trading strongly interacting (in the original coordinates) fermionic Hamiltonians for weakly interacting (in the dual coordinates) ones. It enables us to generalize to the strongly interacting regime the fermionic renormalization group approach to weakly interacting junctions. As a result, on one hand, we are able to pertinently complement the information…
We extend and apply a recent theory of the dynamical spin response of Anderson lattice systems to interpret ESR data on YbRh2Si2. Starting within a semiphenomenological Fermi liquid description at low temperatures T < Tx (a crossover temperature) and low magnetic fields B << Bx, we extend the description to the non-Fermi liquid regime by adopting a quasiparticle picture with effective mass and spin susceptibility varying logarithmically with energy/temperature, as observed in experiment. We find a sharp ESR resonance line slightly shifted from the local f-level resonance and broadened by quasi…
We study the instabilities caused by four fermion interactions on algebraic spin liquids. Renormalization group (RG) is used for three types of previously proposed spin liquids on the square lattice: the staggered flux state of SU(2) spin system, the $π-$flux state of SU(4) spin system, and the $π-$flux state of SU(2) spin system. The low energy field theories of the first two types of spin liquids are QED3 with emerged SU(4) and SU(8) flavor symmetries, the low energy theory of the $π-$flux SU(2) spin liquid is the QCD3 with SU(2) gauge field and emergent Sp(4) (SO(5)) flavor symmetry. Suitab…
We show that thermodynamics is insufficient to probe the nature of the low energy dynamics of quantum impurity models and a more subtle analysis based on scattering theory is required. Traditionally, quantum impurity models are classified into one of two categories: Fermi liquids and non-Fermi liquids, depending on the analytic properties of the various thermodynamic quntities. We show, however, that even when a quantum impurity model is a Fermi liquid (an incoming electron at the Fermi level scatters elastically off the impurity), one may find singular thermodynamic behavior if characteristic…
We show that the one-dimensional (1D) electron systems can also be described by Landau's phenomenological Fermi-liquid theory. Most of the known results derived from the Luttinger-liquid theory can be retrieved from the 1D Fermi-liquid theory. Exact correspondence between the Landau parameters and Haldane parameters is established. The exponents of the dynamical correlation functions and the impurity problem are also discussed based on the finite size corrections of elementary excitations with the predictions of the conformal field theory, which provides a bridge between the 1D Fermi-liquid an…
To capture the universal low-energy physics of metals within effective field theories, one has to generalize the usual notion of scale invariance and renormalizable field theory due to the presence of intrinsic scales (Fermi momenta). In this paper, we develop a field-theoretic functional renormalization group formalism for full low-energy effective field theories of non-Fermi liquids that include all gapless modes around the Fermi surface. The formalism is applied to the non-Fermi liquid that arises at the antiferromagnetic quantum critical point in two space dimensions. In the space of coupl…
We study the longitudinal sound propagation in the electronic nematic Fermi liquid where the Fermi surface is distorted due to the spontaneously broken rotational symmetry. The behavior of the sound wave in the nematic ordered state is dramatically different from that in the isotropic Fermi liquid. The collective modes associated with the fluctuations of the Fermi surface distortion in the nematic Fermi liquid leads to the strong and anisotropic damping of the sound wave. The relevance of the nematic Fermi liquid in doped Mott insulator is discussed.
In these lecture notes, the basic physics of Fermi liquids and Luttinger liquids is presented. Fermi liquids are discussed both from a phenomenological viewpoint, in relation to microscopic approaches, and as renormalization group fixed points. Luttinger liquids are introduced using the bosonization formalism, and their essential differences with Fermi liquids are pointed out. Applications to transport effects, the effect of disorder, quantum spin chains, and spin ladders, both insulating and metallic, are given.
We show that a strongly correlated Fermi system with the fermion condensate, which exhibits strong deviations from Landau Fermi liquid behavior, is driven into the Landau Fermi liquid by applying a small magnetic field $B$ at temperature T=0. This field-induced Landau Fermi liquid behavior provides the constancy of the Kadowaki-Woods ratio. A reentrance into the strongly correlated regime is observed if the magnetic field $B$ decreases to zero, then the effective mass $M^*$ diverges as $M^*\propto 1/\sqrt{B}$. At finite temperatures, the strongly correlated regime is restored at some temperatu…
An intense investigation of possible non-Fermi liquid states of matter has been inspired by two of the most intriguing phenomena discovered in the past quarter century, namely high temperature superconductivity and the fractional quantum Hall effect. Despite enormous conceptual strides, these two fields have developed largely along separate paths. Two widely employed theories are the resonating valence bond theory for high temperature superconductivity and the composite fermion theory for the fractional quantum Hall effect. The goal of this "perspective" article is to note that they subscribe …
Non-Fermi liquid behavior of strongly correlated Fermi systems is derived within the Landau approach. We attribute this behavior to a phase transition associated with a rearrangement of the Landau state that leads to flattening of a portion of the single-particle spectrum $ε({\bf p})$ in the vicinity of the Fermi surface. We demonstrate that the quasiparticle subsystem responsible for the flat spectrum possesses the same thermodynamic properties as a gas of localized spins. Theoretical results compare favorably with available experimental data. While departing radically from prevalent views on…
Using a fermionic renormalization group method we present a simple real space picture of the strong influence an impurity has on the electronic properties of a Luttinger liquid. We compute the flow of the renormalized impurity potential for a single impurity over the entire energy range - from the microscopic scale of a lattice-fermion model down to the low-energy limit. We confirm that low energy properties close to the impurity are as if the chain is cut in two pieces with open boundary conditions at the end points, but show that this universal behavior is only reached for extremely large sy…
A crossover from a non-Fermi liquid to a Fermi liquid phase in Yb$_2$Ni$_{12}$P$_7$ is observed by analyzing electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$, magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$, specific heat $C(T)$, and thermoelectric power $S(T)$ measurements. The electronic contribution to specific heat, $C_{e}(T)$, behaves as $C_{e}(T)/T \sim -\ln(T)$ for 5 K $< T <$ 15 K, which is consistent with non-Fermi liquid behavior. Below $T \sim$ 4 K, the upturn in $C_{e}(T)/T$ begins to saturate, suggesting that the system crosses over into a Fermi-liquid ground state. This is consistent with robust $ρ(T) - ρ_0 = AT^2$…
This paper is concerned with the weak-moment magnetism in heavy-fermion materials and its relation to the non-Fermi liquid physics observed near the transition to the Fermi liquid. We explore the hypothesis that the primary fluctuations responsible for the non-Fermi liquid physics are those associated with the destruction of the large Fermi surface of the Fermi liquid. Magnetism is suggested to be a low-energy instability of the resulting small Fermi surface state. A concrete realization of this picture is provided by a fractionalized Fermi liquid state which has a small Fermi surface of condu…
We improve the recently developed functional renormalization group (fRG) for impurities and boundaries in Luttinger liquids by including renormalization of the two-particle interaction, in addition to renormalization of the impurity potential. Explicit flow-equations are derived for spinless lattice fermions with nearest neighbor interaction at zero temperature, and a fast algorithm for solving these equations for very large systems is presented. We compute spectral properties of single-particle excitations, and the oscillations in the density profile induced by impurities or boundaries for ch…
We study the effect of electron hopping in triple quantum dots modelled by the three-impurity Anderson model. We determine the range of hopping parameters where the system exhibits the two-channel Kondo effect and has non-Fermi-liquid properties in a wide temperature interval. As this interval is entered from above, the conductance through the side dots increases to a half of the conductance quantum, while the conductance through the system remains small. At lower temperatures the conductance through the system increases to the unitary limit as the system crosses over to the Fermi-liquid groun…
