We study the instabilities caused by four fermion interactions on algebraic spin liquids. Renormalization group (RG) is used for three types of previously proposed spin liquids on the square lattice: the staggered flux state of SU(2) spin system, the $π-$flux state of SU(4) spin system, and the $π-$flux state of SU(2) spin system. The low energy field theories of the first two types of spin liquids are QED3 with emerged SU(4) and SU(8) flavor symmetries, the low energy theory of the $π-$flux SU(2) spin liquid is the QCD3 with SU(2) gauge field and emergent Sp(4) (SO(5)) flavor symmetry. Suitable large-N generalization of these spin liquids are discussed, and a systematic 1/N expansion is applied to the RG calculations. The most relevant four fermion perturbations are identified, and the possible phases driven by relevant perturbations are discussed.
Hidden duality and associated instabilities of the spinless Luttinger liquid on lattice are reported. The local quantum fluctuations and the long-distance chiral modes compete and as a result produce a hierarchy of exotic charge/density instabilities. Explicit bosonic quantum operators for the local density fluctuations are constructed and are used to make identification of the Luttinger liquid with the classical 2D Coulomb gas with $θ$-term and with the rich hidden duality.
We develop a procedure for detecting Fermi liquid instabilities by extending the analysis of Pomeranchuk to two-dimensional lattice systems. The method is very general and straightforward to apply, thus providing a powerful tool for the search of exotic phases. We test it by applying it to a lattice electron model with interactions leading to $s$ and d-wave instabilities.
We discuss the appearance of magnetic and charge instabilities, named respectively metamagnetism (MM) and phase separation (PS), in systems which can be described by a perturbed Luttinger liquid. We argue that such instabilities can be associated with the vanishing of the effective Fermi velocity v, which in some cases coincides with a divergence of the effective Luttinger parameter K. We analyze in particular an XXZ chain with next-nearest-neighbor interactions in different limits where MM shows up and an extended Hubbard model where in turn, PS occurs. Qualitative agreement with previous stu…
Interacting fermions on the half-filled honeycomb lattice with short-range repulsions have been suggested to host a variety of interesting many-body ground states, e.g., a topological Mott insulator. A number of recent studies of the spinless case in terms of exact diagonalization, the infinite density matrix renormalization group and the functional renormalization group, however, indicate a suppression of the topological Mott insulating phase in the whole range of interaction parameters. Here, we complement the previous studies by investigating the quantum many-body instabilities of the physi…
We analyze the weak-coupling instabilities that may arise when multiple high-order Van Hove points are present inside the Brillouin zone. The model we consider is inspired by twisted bilayer graphene, although the analysis should be more generally applicable. We employ a parquet renormalization group analysis to identify the leading weak-coupling instabilities, supplemented with a Ginzburg-Landau treatment to resolve any degeneracies. Hence we identify the leading instabilities that can occur from weak repulsion with the power-law divergent density of states. Five correlated phases are uncover…
Phase diagrams of the two-dimensional one-band t-t' Hubbard model are obtained within the two-patch and the temperature-cutoff many-patch renormalization group approach. At small t' and at van Hove band fillings antiferromagnetism dominates, while with increasing t' or changing filling antiferromagnetism is replaced by d-wave superconductivity. Near t'=t/2 and close to van Hove band fillings the system is unstable towards ferromagnetism. Away from van Hove band fillings this ferromagnetic instability is replaced by a region with dominating triplet p-wave superconducting correlations. The resul…
We study the electronic instabilities of near 1/4 electron doped graphene using the functional renormalization group (FRG) and variational Monte-Carlo method. A modified FRG implementation is utilized to improve the treatment of the von Hove singularity. At 1/4 doping the system is a chiral spin density wave state exhibiting the anomalous quantized Hall effect, or equivalently a Chern insulator. When the doping deviates from 1/4, the $d_{x^2-y^2}+i d_{xy}$ Cooper pairing becomes the leading instability. Our results suggest near 1/4 electron or hole doped graphene is a fertile playground for th…
We investigate the quantum many-body instabilities for electrons on the honeycomb lattice at half-filling with extended interactions, motivated by a description of graphene and related materials. We employ a recently developed fermionic functional Renormalization Group scheme which allows for highly resolved calculations of wavevector dependences in the low-energy effective interactions. We encounter the expected anti-ferromagnetic spin density wave for a dominant on-site repulsion between electrons, and charge order with different modulations for dominant pure $n$-th nearest neighbor repulsiv…
The Bethe-Salpeter equation is combined with the temperature-cutoff functional renormalization group approach to analyze the order parameter structure for the leading instabilities of the 2D t-t' Hubbard model. We find significant deviations from pure s-, d-, or p-wave forms, which is due to the frustration of antiferromagnetism at small and intermediate t'. With adding a direct antiferromagnetic spin-exchange coupling the eigenfunctions in the particle-hole channel have extended s-wave form, while in the particle-particle singlet pairing channel a higher angular momentum component arises besi…
We study systems made of periodic arrays of one dimensional quantum wires, coupled by Coulomb interaction. Using bosonization an interacting metallic fixed point is obtained, which is shown to be a higher dimensional analogue of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, or a sliding Luttinger liquid. This non-Fermi liquid metallic state, however, is unstable in the presence of weak interwire backscatterings, which favor charge density wave states and suppress pairing. Depending on the effective strength of the Coulomb repulsion and the size of interwire spacing various charge density wave states are stab…
The emergent behavior of spin liquids that are born out of geometrical frustration makes them an intriguing state of matter. We show that in the quantum kagome antiferromagnet ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$SO$_4$ several different correlated, yet fluctuating states exist. By combining complementary local-probe techniques with neutron scattering, we discover a crossover from a critical regime into a gapless spin-liquid phase with decreasing temperature. An additional unconventional instability of the latter phase leads to a second, distinct spin-liquid state that is stabilized at the lowest temperatures. We …
We have carried out Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) calculations on the ground state of long polyacene oligomers within a Pariser-Parr-Pople (PPP) Hamiltonian. The PPP model includes long-range electron correlations which are required for physically realistic modeling of conjugated polymers. We have obtained the ground state energy as a function of the dimerization $δ$ and various correlation functions and structure factors for $δ=0$. From energetics, we find that while the nature of the Peierls' instabilityin polyacene is conditional and strong electron correlations enhance the di…
The impact of local and nonlocal density-density interactions on the electronic instabilities in the honeycomb lattice is widely investigated. Some early studies proposed the emergence of interaction-induced topologically nontrivial phases, but recently, it was denied in several works including renormalization group calculations with refined momentum resolution. We use the truncated unity functional renormalization group to study the many-body instabilities of electrons on the half-filled honeycomb lattice, focusing on the effect of the exchange interaction. We show that varying the next-neare…
We show how a ground state trial wavefunction of a Fermi liquid can be systematically improved introducing a sequence of renormalized coordinates through an iterative backflow transformation. We apply this scheme to calculate the ground state energy of liquid $^3$He in two dimensions at freezing density using variational and fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo. Comparing with exact transient estimate results for systems with small number of particles, we find that variance extrapolations provide accurate results for the true ground state together with stringent lower bounds. For larger systems th…
A simple yet paradigmatic model for the interplay of strong electronic correlations and geometric frustration is the triangular lattice Hubbard model. Recently it was proposed that moiré structures of transition metal dichalcogenides can be used to simulate extended versions that include non-local density-density interactions. We study competing instabilities of interacting electrons in such an extended Hubbard model on the triangular lattice near a filling where the density of states has a Van Hove singularity. We employ a truncated-unity functional renormalization group approach to investiga…
We study the effects of spin-antisymmetric interactions on the stability of a Landau-Fermi liquid on the square lattice, using the generalized Pomeranchuk method for two-dimensional lattice systems. In particular, we analyze interactions that could induce instabilities of the so called spin-split type, that is when spin-up and spin-down Fermi surfaces are displaced with respect to each other. The phase space is studied as a function of the strength of the interaction $V$, the electron chemical potential $μ$ and an external magnetic field $h$. We find that such interactions produce in general a…
We present a theory of spontaneous Fermi surface deformations for half-filled Landau levels (filling factors of the form $ν=2n+1/2$). We assume the half-filled level to be in a compressible, Fermi liquid state with a circular Fermi surface. The Landau level projection is incorporated via a modified effective electron-electron interaction and the resulting band structure is described within the Hartree-Fock approximation. We regulate the infrared divergences in the theory and probe the intrinsic tendency of the Fermi surface to deform through Pomeranchuk instabilities. We find that the correspo…
Hund's coupling is shown to generally favor, in a doped half-filled Mott insulator, an increase in the compressibility culminating in a Fermi-liquid instability towards phase separation. The largest effect is found about the frontier between an ordinary and an orbitally-decoupled ("Hund's") metal. The increased compressibility implies an enhancement of quasiparticle scattering, thus favoring other possible symmetry breakings. This physics is shown to happen in simulations of the 122 Fe-based superconductors, possibly implying the relevance of this mechanism in the enhancement of the the critic…
This review discusses instabilities of the Fermi-liquid state of conduction electrons in metals with particular emphasis on magnetic quantum critical points. Both the existing theoretical concepts and experimental data on selected materials are presented; with the aim of assessing the validity of presently available theory. After briefly recalling the fundamentals of Fermi-liquid theory, the local Fermi-liquid state in quantum impurity models and their lattice versions is described. Next, the scaling concepts applicable to quantum phase transitions are presented. The Hertz-Millis-Moriya theory…
We review recent developments in functional renormalization group (RG) methods for interacting fermions. These approaches aim at obtaining an unbiased picture of competing Fermi liquid instabilities in the low-dimensional models like the two-dimensional Hubbard model. We discuss how these instabilities can be approached from various sides and how the fermionic RG flow can be continued into phases with broken symmetry.
This paper is a short review on the foundations and recent advances in the microscopic Fermi-liquid (FL) theory. We demonstrate that this theory is built on five identities, which follow from conservation of total charge (particle number), spin, and momentum in a translationally and $SU(2)$-invariant FL. These identities allows one to express the effective mass and quasiparticle residue in terms of an exact vertex function and also impose constraints on the "quasiparticle" and "incoherent" (or "low-energ" and "high-energy") contributions to the observable quantities. Such constraints forbid ce…
We use Wilsons weak coupling ``momentum'' shell renormalization group method to show that two-particle interaction terms commonly neglected in bosonization of one-dimensional correlated electron systems with open boundaries are indeed irrelevant in the renormalization group sense. Our study provides a more solid ground for many investigations of Luttinger liquids with open boundaries.
Three-dimensional (3D) variants of the Kitaev model can harbor gapless spin liquids with a Majorana Fermi surface on certain tricoordinated lattice structures such as the recently introduced hyperoctagon lattice. Here we investigate Fermi surface instabilities arising from additional spin exchange terms (such as a Heisenberg coupling) which introduce interactions between the emergent Majorana fermion degrees of freedom. We show that independent of the sign and structure of the interactions, the Majorana surface is always unstable. Generically the system spontaneously doubles its unit cell at e…
We apply the fermion renormalization group method, implemented numerically by Honerkamp et.al., to a two-band model of FeAs-based materials. At half filling we find the $(π,0)$ or $(0,π)$ spin density wave order and a sub-dominant superconducting pairing tendency. Due to a topological reason, the spin density wave gap has nodes on the fermi surfaces. Away from half filling we find an unconventional s-wave and a sub-dominant $d_{x^2-y^2}$ pairing instability. The former has $s$ symmetry around the hole fermi surface but exhibits $s+d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetry around the electron pockets where the 90 …
We report a two-step density-matrix renormalization-group computation of the equal-time single-particle Green's function, the density-density correlations, and the low-frequency spectral weight function of a spinless fermion model in an anisotropic two-dimensional lattice at half-filling. We find that at weak couplings the density-density correlations have the universal decay of a Fermi liquid; the spectral weight function displays a sharp quasi-particle peak. But in the vicinity of a quantum critical point, these correlations strongly deviate from a Fermi liquid prediction and a pseudogap ope…
The weak coupling instabilities of a two dimensional Fermi system are investigated for the case of a square lattice using a Wilson renormalization group scheme to one loop order. We focus on a situation where the Fermi surface passes through two saddle points of the single particle dispersion. In the case of perfect nesting, the dominant instability is a spin density wave but d-wave superconductivity as well as charge or spin flux phases are also obtained in certain regions in the space of coupling parameters. The low energy regime in the vicinity of these instabilities can be studied analytic…
A free Fermi gas has, famously, a superconducting susceptibility that diverges logarithmically at zero temperature. In this paper we ask whether this is still true for a Fermi liquid and find that the answer is that it does {\it not}. From the perspective of the renormalization group for interacting fermions, the question arises because a repulsive interaction in the Cooper channel is a marginally irrelevant operator at the Fermi liquid fixed point and thus is also expected to infect various physical quantities with logarithms. Somewhat surprisingly, at least from the renormalization group vie…
We study the one dimensional t-t'-J model for generic couplings using two complementary theories, the extremely correlated Fermi liquid theory and time-dependent density matrix renormalization group over a broad energy scale. The two methods provide a unique insight into the strong momentum dependence of the self-energy of this prototypical non-Fermi liquid, described at low energies as a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. We also demonstrate its intimate relationship to spin-charge separation, i.e. the splitting of Landau quasiparticles of higher dimensions into two constituents, driven by strong qua…
We discuss renormalization group approaches to strongly interacting Fermi systems, in the context of Landau's theory of Fermi liquids and functional methods, and their application to neutron matter.
We derive an efficient and unbiased method for computing order parameters in correlated electron systems with competing instabilities. Charge, magnetic and pairing fluctuations above the energy scale of spontaneous symmetry breaking are taken into account by a functional renormalization group flow, while the formation of order below that scale is treated in mean-field theory. The method captures fluctuation driven instabilities such as $d$-wave superconductivity. As a first application we study the competition between antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in the ground state of the two-dime…
The interplay of non-Fermi liquid and superconductivity born out of strong dynamical interactions is at the heart of the physics of unconventional superconductivity. As a solvable platform of the strongly correlated superconductors, we study the pairing instabilities of the Yukawa-Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (Yukawa-SYK) model, which describes spin-1/2 fermions coupled to bosons by the random, all-to-all, spin-independent and dependent Yukawa interactions. In contrast to the previously studied models, the random Yukawa couplings are sampled from a collection of Gaussian ensembles whose variances follow …
In this work, we estimate the effect of photoinduced screening breakdown of the Coulomb potential mediated by plasmons. In contrast to previous studies, we consider the contribution from the divergence of renormalized inverse electron permittivity, which enhances Coulomb interaction at longer ranges. Our work reveals that the Coulomb potential acquires oscillating terms, which for the charged plane case could lead to a spatial heterostructure. In the resonant case ($ω_p = Ω$), photoinduced Coulomb interaction becomes attractive for small values of momenta. This Coulomb interaction renormalizat…
We study the presence of Pomeranchuk instabilities induced by interactions on a Fermi liquid description of a graphene layer. Using a recently developed generalization of Pomeranchuk method we present a phase diagram in the space of fillings versus on-site and nearest neighbors interactions. Interestingly, we find that for both interactions being repulsive an instability region exists near the Van Hove filling, in agreement with earlier theoretical work. In contrast, near half filling, the Fermi liquid behavior appears to be stable, in agreement with theoretical results and experimental findin…
We present a Keldysh nonlinear sigma-model approach to the renormalization group analysis of the disordered electron liquid. We include both the Coulomb interaction and Fermi-liquid type interactions in the singlet and triplet channels into the formalism. Based on this model, we reproduce the coupled renormalization group equations for the diffusion coefficient, the frequency, and interaction constants previously derived with the replica model in the imaginary time technique. With the help of source fields coupling to the particle-number and spin densities, we study the density-density and spi…
Type II Weyl semimetal, a three dimensional gapless topological phase, has drawn enormous interest recently. These topological semimetals enjoy overtilted dispersion and Weyl nodes that separate the particle and hole pocket. Using perturbation renormalization group, we identify possible renormalization of the interaction vertices, which show a tendency toward instability. We further adopt a self-consistent mean-field approach to study possible instability of the type II Weyl semimetals under short-range electron-electron interaction. It is found that the instabilities are much easier to form i…
We elucidate the close relationship between spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking and the physics of excitonic instabilities in strongly correlated multiband systems. The underlying mechanism responsible for the spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry in a many-body system is closely related to the Cooper-like pairing instability of interband particle-hole pairs involving higher order symmetries. Studies of such pairing instabilites have, however, mainly focused on the mean-field aspects of the virtual exciton condensate, which ignores the presence of the underlying collective Fer…
Recent experiments in the underdoped regime of the hole-doped cuprates have found evidence for an incommensurate charge density wave state. We present an analysis of the charge ordering instabilities in a metal with antiferromagnetic correlations, where the electronic excitations are coupled to the fractionalized excitations of a quantum fluctuating antiferromagnet on the square lattice. The resulting charge density wave state emerging out of such a fractionalized Fermi-liquid (FL*) has wavevectors of the form $(\pm Q_0,0), (0,\pm Q_0)$, with a predominantly $d$-form factor, in agreement with …
We study the interplay of interactions and disorder in a one-dimensional fermion lattice coupled adiabatically to infinite reservoirs. We employ both the functional renormalization group (FRG) as well as matrix product state techniques, which serve as an accurate benchmark for small systems. Using the FRG, we compute the length- and temperature-dependence of the conductance averaged over $10^4$ samples for lattices as large as $10^{5}$ sites. We identify regimes in which non-ohmic power law behavior can be observed and demonstrate that the corresponding exponents can be understood by adapting …
Based on exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method, we show that an anisotropic triangle lattice Heisenberg spin model has three distinct quantum phases. In particular, a spin-liquid phase is present in the weak interchain coupling regime, which is characterized by an exponentially-decaying spin correlator along the weaker coupling direction and a quasi-one-dimensional spin structure factor along the chain direction, in agreement with experiments on the Cs2CuCl4 compounds. In the obtained phase diagram, the spin liquid phase is found to persist up to a relati…
The ground-state and low-energy excitations of quantum Hall systems are studied by the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method. From the ground-state pair correlation functions and low-energy excitions, the ground-state phase diagram is determined, which consists of incompressible liquid states, Fermi liquid type compressible liquid states, and many kinds of CDW states called stripe, bubble and Wigner crystal. The spin transition and the domain formation are studied at v=2/3. The evolution from composite fermion liquid state to an excitonic state in bilayer systems is investigated a…
Many quantum mechanical problems (such as dissipative phase fluctuations in metallic and superconducting nanocircuits, or impurity scattering in Luttinger liquids) involve a continuum of bosonic modes with a marginal spectral density diverging as the inverse of energy. We construct a Numerical Renormalization Group in this singular case, with a manageable violation of scale separation at high energy, capturing reliably the low energy physics. The method is demonstrated by a non-perturbative solution over several energy decades for the dynamical conductance of a Luttinger liquid with a single s…
We analyze how the logarithmic renormalizations in the Cooper channel affect the non-analytic temperature dependence of the specific heat coefficient γ(T) - γ(0)=A(T)T in a 2D Fermi liquid. We show that A(T) is expressed exactly in terms of the fully renormalized backscattering amplitude which includes the renormalization in the Cooper channel. In contrast to the 1D case, both charge and spin components of the backscattering amplitudes are subject to this renormalization. We show that the logarithmic renormalization of the charge amplitude vanishes for a flat Fermi surface, when the system bec…
We discuss an interplay between the Fermi-liquid (FL) theory and diagrammatic perturbative approach to interacting Fermi systems. In the FL theory for Galilean-invariant systems, mass renormalization $m^*/m$ comes exclusively from fermions at the Fermi surface. We show that in a diagrammatic perturbation theory the same result for $m^*/m$ comes from fermions both at and away from the Fermi surface. The equivalence of the FL and pertubative approaches is based on a particular relation between self-energy contributions from high- and low-energy fermions. We argue that care has to be exercised in…
Effects of perturbations on topologically ordered (TO) states with fractionalized excitations is very intriguing. While small perturbations are not expected to affect a robust TO, sizable perturbations must lead to onset of novel routes to order(s). Observability of such emergent orders in real condensed matter systems continues to be an open issue of paramount interest. Here, we detail how a featureless Kitaev spin liquid with rigorous TO gives way to partial topological ordered state(s) coexisting with a wide staircase of novel `excitonic' orders of fractionalized entities in a Zeeman field.…
Motivated by the recent finding of superconductivity in layered CoO_2 compounds, we investigate superconducting and magnetic instabilities of interacting electrons on the two-dimensional triangular lattice. Using a one-loop renormalization group scheme for weak to moderate coupling strengths, we find that for purely local interactions U>0 and small Fermi surfaces the renormalization group flow remains bounded down to very low scales and no superconducting or other instabilities can be detected. Antiferromagnetic exchange interactions J generate a wide density region with a d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}-…
The crossover from fluctuating atomic constituents to a collective state as one lowers temperature or energy is at the heart of the dynamical mean-field theory description of the solid state. We demonstrate that the numerical renormalization group is a viable tool to monitor this crossover in a real-materials setting. The renormalization group flow from high to arbitrarily small energy scales clearly reveals the emergence of the Fermi-liquid state of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$. We find a two-stage screening process, where orbital fluctuations are screened at much higher energies than spin fluctuations, and…
Recent experiments with cold atoms on the impurity motion in one-dimensional liquids of interacting bosons have revealed an interesting interplay between the polaronic impurity mass shift and the renormalization of the optical potential. We show that the influence of the external trap on the Bose gas leads to a steeper effective potential for the impurity. We propose a framework in which this potential renormalization and the mass shift can be quantitatively understood by combining a semi-classical theory of density wave excitations in the Luttinger liquid with the non equilibrium formalism of…
Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are exotic phases of matter exhibiting long-range entanglement and supporting emergent gauge fields. A vigorous search for experimental realizations of these states has identified several materials with properties hinting at QSL physics. A key issue in understanding these QSL candidates is often the interplay of weak disorder of the crystal structure with the spin liquid state. It has recently been pointed out that in at least one important class of candidate QSLs - pyrochlore magnets based on non-Kramers ions such as Pr$^{3+}$ or Tb$^{3+}$- structural disorder can …
The phenomenon of Spin-Charge separation in non-Fermi liquids is well understood only in certain solvable d=1 fermionic systems. In this paper we furnish the first example of asymptotic Spin-Charge separation in a d=1 non solvable model. This goal is achieved using Renormalization Group approach combined with Ward-Identities and Schwinger-Dyson equations, corrected by the presence of a bandwidth cut-offs. Such methods, contrary to bosonization, could be in principle applied also to lattice or higher dimensional systems.
We report the results of a parquet renormalization group (RG) study of competing instabilities in the full 2D four pocket, three orbital low-energy model for iron-based superconductors. We derive and analyze the RG flow of the couplings, which describe all symmetry-allowed interactions between low-energy fermions. Despite that the number of the couplings is large, we argue that there are only two stable fixed trajectories of the RG flow and one weakly unstable fixed trajectory with a single unstable direction. Each fixed trajectory has a finite basin of attraction in the space of initial syste…
We study the Fermi surface instabilities of the Pomeranchuk type in the spin triplet channel with high orbital partial waves ($F_{l}^a ~(l>0)$). The ordered phases are classified into two classes, dubbed the $α$ and $β$-phases by analogy to the superfluid $^3$He-A and B-phases. The Fermi surfaces in the $α$-phases exhibit spontaneous anisotropic distortions, while those in the $β$-phases remain circular or spherical with topologically non-trivial spin configurations in momentum space. In the $α$-phase, the Goldstone modes in the density channel exhibit anisotropic overdamping. The Goldstone mo…
The density of low energy particle-hole excitations is non-analytic in a singular Fermi-liquid, but it is altered on entering a superconducting state in which, in the pure limit, it vanishes asymptotically at the chemical potential and in general is analytic. The single-particle excitations in the superconducting states are then quasi-particles so that a form of Landau theory may be constructed for thermodynamic and transport properties in the superconducting state. In this theory, the renormalization of measurable properties due to quasi-particle interactions, such as specific heat, compressi…
