We use Wilsons weak coupling ``momentum'' shell renormalization group method to show that two-particle interaction terms commonly neglected in bosonization of one-dimensional correlated electron systems with open boundaries are indeed irrelevant in the renormalization group sense. Our study provides a more solid ground for many investigations of Luttinger liquids with open boundaries.
Many quantum mechanical problems (such as dissipative phase fluctuations in metallic and superconducting nanocircuits, or impurity scattering in Luttinger liquids) involve a continuum of bosonic modes with a marginal spectral density diverging as the inverse of energy. We construct a Numerical Renormalization Group in this singular case, with a manageable violation of scale separation at high energy, capturing reliably the low energy physics. The method is demonstrated by a non-perturbative solution over several energy decades for the dynamical conductance of a Luttinger liquid with a single s…
We studied the conductance renormalization and conductivity of multi-subband Tomonaga-Luttinger models with inter-subband interactions. We found that, as in single-band systems, the conductance of a multi-subband system with an arbitrary number of subbands is not renormalized due to interaction between electrons. We derived a formula for the conductivity in multi-subband models. We applied it to a simplified case and found that inter-subband interaction enhances the conductivity, which is contrary to the intra-subband repulsive interaction, and that the conductivity is further enhanced for a l…
Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid theory is formulated for metallic carbon nanotubes with open boundaries. Both cases of single- and multi-wall nanotubes are discussed. Based on this theory, spatial variation of the charge density from an edge is investigated with taking account of the shift of the chemical potential which expresses the carrier injection to the nanotube. The charge density has the spatially independent part and the oscillatory component. Roles of Coulomb interaction on the amplitude of the oscillation, the wavenumbers of it and the uniform component of the charge density are clarified…
We improve the recently developed functional renormalization group (fRG) for impurities and boundaries in Luttinger liquids by including renormalization of the two-particle interaction, in addition to renormalization of the impurity potential. Explicit flow-equations are derived for spinless lattice fermions with nearest neighbor interaction at zero temperature, and a fast algorithm for solving these equations for very large systems is presented. We compute spectral properties of single-particle excitations, and the oscillations in the density profile induced by impurities or boundaries for ch…
We consider a non-chiral Luttinger liquid in the presence of a backscattering Hamiltonian which has an extended range. Right/left moving fermions at a given location can thus be converted as left/right moving fermions at a different location, within a specific range. We perform a momentum shell renormalization group treatment which gives the evolution of the relative degrees of freedom of this Hamiltonian contribution under the renormalization flow, and we study a few realistic examples of this extended backscattering Hamiltonian. We find that, for repulsive Coulomb interaction in the Luttinge…
We use bosonic field theories and the infinite system density matrix renormalization group (iDMRG) method to study infinite strips of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states starting from microscopic Hamiltonians. Finite-entanglement scaling allows us to accurately measure chiral central charge, edge mode exponents and momenta without finite-size errors. We analyze states in the first and second level of the standard hierarchy and compare our results to predictions of the chiral Luttinger liquid ($χ$LL) theory. The results confirm the universality of scaling exponents in chiral edges and demonstr…
The absence of fermionic, asymptotical one-particle states in the Luttinger model raises the suspicion that the interactions are actually strong at the vicinity of the Fermi points. The functional internal space renormalization group method, a systematical scheme for the computation of effective coupling strengths off the Fermi points, is applied to shed some light on this issue. A simple truncation of the evolution equation shows that the theory is indeed strongly coupled at the Fermi points for arbitrarily small value of the bare coupling constant and the removal of the cutoff is blocked by …
We compare two fermionic renormalization group methods which have been used to investigate the electronic transport properties of one-dimensional metals with two-particle interaction (Luttinger liquids) and local inhomogeneities. The first one is a poor man's method setup to resum ``leading-log'' divergences of the effective transmission at the Fermi momentum. Generically the resulting equations can be solved analytically. The second approach is based on the functional renormalization group method and leads to a set of differential equations which can only for certain setups and in limiting ca…
We study the interplay of interactions and disorder in a one-dimensional fermion lattice coupled adiabatically to infinite reservoirs. We employ both the functional renormalization group (FRG) as well as matrix product state techniques, which serve as an accurate benchmark for small systems. Using the FRG, we compute the length- and temperature-dependence of the conductance averaged over $10^4$ samples for lattices as large as $10^{5}$ sites. We identify regimes in which non-ohmic power law behavior can be observed and demonstrate that the corresponding exponents can be understood by adapting …
We study a system consisting of a junction of N quantum wires, where the junction is characterized by a scalar S-matrix, and an impurity spin is coupled to the electrons close to the junction. The wires are modeled as weakly interacting Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids. We derive the renormalization group equations for the Kondo couplings of the spin to the electronic modes on different wires, and analyze the renormalization group flows and fixed points for different values of the initial Kondo couplings and of the junction S-matrix (such as the decoupled S-matrix and the Griffiths S-matrix). We gen…
We report a two-step density-matrix renormalization-group computation of the equal-time single-particle Green's function, the density-density correlations, and the low-frequency spectral weight function of a spinless fermion model in an anisotropic two-dimensional lattice at half-filling. We find that at weak couplings the density-density correlations have the universal decay of a Fermi liquid; the spectral weight function displays a sharp quasi-particle peak. But in the vicinity of a quantum critical point, these correlations strongly deviate from a Fermi liquid prediction and a pseudogap ope…
One-dimensional electron systems (1DESs) exhibit properties that are fundamentally different from higher-dimensional systems. For example, electron-electron interactions in 1DESs have been predicted to induce Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid behavior. Naturally-occurring grain boundaries in single-layer semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides provide 1D conducting channels that have been proposed to host Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids, but charge density wave physics has also been suggested to explain their behavior. Clear identification of the electronic ground state of this system has been hamp…
In a previous paper [J.-M. Bischoff and E. Jeckelmann, Phys. Rev. B 96, 195111 (2017)] we introduced a density-matrix renormalization group method for calculating the linear conductance of one-dimensional correlated quantum systems and demonstrated it on homogeneous spinless fermion chains with impurities. Here we present extensions of this method to inhomogeneous systems, models with phonons, and the spin conductance of electronic models. The method is applied to a spinless fermion wire-lead model, the homogeneous spinless Holstein model, and the Hubbard model. Its capabilities are demonstrat…
In quasi-1D conducting nanowires spin-orbit coupling destructs spin-charge separation, intrinsic to Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL). We study renormalization of a single scattering impurity in a such liquid. Performing bosonization of low-energy excitations and exploiting perturbative renormalization analysis we extend the phase portrait in $K_s$ - $K_c$ space, obtained previously for TLL with decoupled spin-charge channels.
Recent experiments with cold atoms on the impurity motion in one-dimensional liquids of interacting bosons have revealed an interesting interplay between the polaronic impurity mass shift and the renormalization of the optical potential. We show that the influence of the external trap on the Bose gas leads to a steeper effective potential for the impurity. We propose a framework in which this potential renormalization and the mass shift can be quantitatively understood by combining a semi-classical theory of density wave excitations in the Luttinger liquid with the non equilibrium formalism of…
We study four-lead junction of semi-infinite wires by using fermionic representation in the scattering state formalism. The model of spinless fermions with short-range Luttinger liquid type interaction is used. We find the renormalization group (RG) equations for the conductances of the system in the first order of fermionic interaction. In contrast to the well-known cases of two-lead and three-lead junctions, we show that the RG equations cannot be expressed solely in terms of conductances. The appearing ambiguity is resolved by choosing a certain sign defined at the level of S-matrix, but hi…
We develop the renormalization group theory of the conductances of N-lead junctions of spinless Luttinger-liquid wires as functions of bias voltages applied to N independent Fermi-liquid reservoirs. Based on the perturbative results up to second order in the interaction we demonstrate that the conductances obey scaling. The corresponding renormalization group $β$ functions are derived up to second order.
The phenomenon of Spin-Charge separation in non-Fermi liquids is well understood only in certain solvable d=1 fermionic systems. In this paper we furnish the first example of asymptotic Spin-Charge separation in a d=1 non solvable model. This goal is achieved using Renormalization Group approach combined with Ward-Identities and Schwinger-Dyson equations, corrected by the presence of a bandwidth cut-offs. Such methods, contrary to bosonization, could be in principle applied also to lattice or higher dimensional systems.
We study numerically the universal conductance of Luttinger liquids wire with a single impurity via the Muti-scale Entanglement Renormalization Ansatz (MERA). The scale invariant MERA provides an efficient way to extract scaling operators and scaling dimensions for both the bulk and the boundary conformal field theories. By utilizing the key relationship between the conductance tensor and ground-state correlation function, the universal conductance can be evaluated within the framework of the boundary MERA. We construct the boundary MERA to compute the correlation functions and scaling dimensi…
Using functional renormalization group methods, we present a self-consistent calculation of the true Fermi momenta k_F^a (antibonding band) and k_F^b (bonding band) of two spinless interacting metallic chains coupled by small interchain hopping. In the regime where the system is a Luttinger liquid, we find that Delta = k_F^b - k_F^a is self-consistently determined by Delta = Delta_{1} [ 1 + {g}_0^2 ln (Lambda_0 / Delta)^2]^{-1} where g_0 is the dimensionless interchain backscattering interaction, Delta_{1} is the Hartree-Fock result for k_F^{b}-k_F^a, and Lambda_0 is an ultraviolet cutoff. If …
We use bosonization methods to calculate the exact finite-temperature single-electron Green's function of a spinful Luttinger liquid confined by open boundaries. The corresponding local spectral density is constructed and analyzed in detail. The interplay between boundary, finite-size and thermal effects are shown to dramatically influence the low-energy properties of the system. In particular, the well-known zero-temperature critical behavior in the bulk always crosses over to a boundary dominated regime in the vicinity of the Fermi level. Thermal fluctuations cause an enhanced depletion of s…
We apply field theoretical renormalization group (RG) methods to describe the Tomonaga-Luttinger model as an important test ground to deal with spin-charge separation effects in higher spatial dimensions. We compute the anomalous dimension associated with the one-particle Green's functions $G_{(a)R}$. We calculate the RG equations for the renormalized forward couplings $g_{2R}$ and $g_{4R}$ up to two-loop order and demonstrate that they don't flow in the vicinities of the Fermi points (FPs). We solve the Callan-Symanzik equation for $G_{(a)R}$ in the neighborhood of the FPs. We calculate the r…
We study the renormalization group flow of the Luttinger-Ward functional and of its two-particle irreducible vertex functions, given a cut-off in the two-particle interaction. We derive a conserving approximation to the flow and relate it to the fluctuation exchange approximation as well as to non-conserving approximations introduced in an earlier publication ctuation exchange approximation as well as to nonconserving approximations introducen [J. F. Rentrop, S. G. Jakobs, and V. Meden, J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 48, 145002 (2015)]. We apply the different approximate flow equations to the single…
The renormalization of conductances in a Y junction of spinless Luttinger-liquid wires additionally coupled to acoustic longitudinal phonons is investigated in fermionic representation. This system corresponds to geometry of a tunneling experiment and exhibits the interplay between the Coulomb repulsion and the attractive retarded interaction mediated by phonons. The retardation effects related to the propagation of phonons through the junction with arbitrary transmission and reflection amplitudes are taken into account. The appearing logarithmic corrections to conductances of the junction are…
The temperature ($T$) and frequency ($ω$) dependent conductivity of weakly disordered Luttinger liquids is calculated in a systematic way both by perturbation theory and from a finite temperature renormalization group (RG) treatment to leading order in the disorder strength. Whereas perturbation theory results in $ω/T$ scaling of the conductivity such scaling is violated in the RG traetment. We also determine the non-linear field dependence of the conductivity, whose power law scaling is different from that of temperature and frequency dependence.
Using a fermionic renormalization group method we present a simple real space picture of the strong influence an impurity has on the electronic properties of a Luttinger liquid. We compute the flow of the renormalized impurity potential for a single impurity over the entire energy range - from the microscopic scale of a lattice-fermion model down to the low-energy limit. We confirm that low energy properties close to the impurity are as if the chain is cut in two pieces with open boundary conditions at the end points, but show that this universal behavior is only reached for extremely large sy…
We present a study of the one-particle spectral properties for a variety of models of Luttinger liquids with open boundaries. We first consider the Tomonaga-Luttinger model using bosonization. For weak interactions the boundary exponent of the power-law suppression of the spectral weight close to the chemical potential is dominated by a term linear in the interaction. This motivates us to study the spectral properties also within the Hartree-Fock approximation. It already gives power-law behavior and qualitative agreement with the exact spectral function. For the lattice model of spinless ferm…
We consider arrays of Luttinger liquids, where each node is described by a unitary scattering matrix. In the limit of small electron-electron interaction, we study the evolution of these scattering matrices as the high-energy single particle states are gradually integrated out. Interestingly, we obtain the same renormalization group equations as those derived by Lal, Rao, and Sen, for a system composed of a single node coupled to several semi-infinite 1D wires. The main difference between the single node geometry and a regular lattice is that in the latter case, the single particle spectrum is…
We study the XXZ Heisenberg model in a staggered magnetic field using the HOTRG tensor renormalization method. Built into the tensor representation of the XXZ model is the U(1) symmetry, which is systematically maintained at each renormalization step. We determine the phase diagram of the model from the low lying spectrum, and from the finite size dependence of the spectrum we extract scaling dimensions, which are compared to predictions of low energy field theory.
We introduce a systematic construction of a gapless symmetry protected topological phase in one dimension by "decorating" the domain walls of Luttinger liquids. The resulting strongly interacting phases provide a concrete example of a gapless symmetry protected topological (gSPT) phase with robust symmetry-protected edge modes. Using boundary conformal field theory arguments, we show that while the bulks of such gSPT phases are identical to conventional Luttinger liquids, their boundary critical behavior is controlled by a different, strongly-coupled renormalization group fixed point. Our resu…
Two- or three-dimensional metals are usually well described by weakly interacting, fermionic quasiparticles. This concept breaks down in one dimension due to strong Coulomb interactions. There, low-energy electronic excitations are expected to be bosonic collective modes, which fractionalize into independent spin and charge density waves. Experimental research on one-dimensional metals is still hampered by their difficult realization, their limited accessibility to measurements, and by competing or obscuring effects such as Peierls distortions or zero bias anomalies. Here we overcome these dif…
Photo-induced metallic states in a Mott insulator are studied for the half-filled, one-dimensional Hubbard model with the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group. An irradiation of strong AC field is found to create a linear dispersion in the optical spectrum (current-current correlation) in the nonequilibrium steady state reminiscent of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid for the doped Mott insulator in equilibrium. The spin spectrum in nonequilibrium retains the des Cloizeaux-Pearson mode with the spin velocity differing from the charge velocity. The mechanism of the photocarrier-dopin…
We discuss the signatures of a Kramers pair of Majorana modes formed in a Josephson junction on top of a quantum spin Hall system. We show that, while ignoring interactions on the quantum spin Hall edge allows arbitrary Andreev process in the system, moderate repulsive interactions stabilize Andreev transmission - the hole goes into the opposite lead from where the electron has arrived. We analyze the renormalization group equations and deduce the existence of a non-trivial critical point for sufficiently strong interactions.
It is well known that the pristine bulk of an interacting one-dimensional system in Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) phase shows power law suppression of quasi-particle tunneling amplitude for all values of TLL parameter $g$, in the zero energy limit. We perform a density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) study of a fully symmetric Y junction of TLL wires and observe an anomalous enhancement of the tunneling density of states (TDOS) in the vicinity of the junction for both (a) interacting bosons case and (b) interacting fermions case, when $g>1$. We also observe suppression of TDOS for $g<1$ …
We study a system of an impurity spin coupled to a junction of several Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids using a renormalization group scheme. For the decoupled S-matrix at the junction, there is a range of Kondo couplings which flow to a multi-channel fixed point for repulsive inter-electron interactions; this is associated with a characteristic temperature dependence of the spin-flip scatterings. If the junction is governed by the Griffiths S-matrix, the Kondo couplings flow to a strong coupling fixed point where all the wires are decoupled.
We study the quantum point contact between the topological superconductor and the helical Luttinger liquid. The effects of the electron-electron interactions in the helical Luttinger liquid on the low-energy physics of this system are analyzed by the renormalization group. Among the various couplings at the point contact which arise from the tunneling via the Majorana edge channel, the induced backscattering in the helical Luttinger liquid is the most relevant for repulsive interactions. Hence, at low temperatures, the helical Luttinger liquid is effectively cut into two separated half wires. …
The conductivity properties between Luttinger liquids are analyzed by exact Renormalization Group methods. We prove that in a two chain system or in a model of bilayer graphene, described by two coupled fermionic honeycomb lattices interacting with a gauge field, the transverse optical conductivity at finite temperature is anomalous and decreasing together with the frequency as a power law with Luttinger liquid exponent.
We consider the interacting, spin conserving, extended Kane-Mele-Hubbard model, and we rigorously establish the exact quantization of the edge spin conductance and the validity of the Helical Luttinger liquid relations for Drude weights and susceptibilities. Our analysis fully takes into account lattice effects, typically neglected in the Helical Luttinger model approximation, which play an essential role for universality. The analysis is based on exact renormalization group methods and on a combination of lattice and emergent Ward identities, which allow to relate the emergent chiral anomaly …
We calculate the single-particle spectral function A (k, omega) of a one-dimensional Luttinger liquid by means of a functional renormalization group (RG) approach. Given an infrared energy cutoff Lambda = Lambda_0 e^{- l}, our approach yields the spectral function in the scaling form, A_Λ (k_F + p, omega) = tau Z_l tilde{A}_l (p xi, omega tau), where k_F is the Fermi momentum, Z_l is the wave-function renormalization factor, tau = 1 / Λis the time scale and xi = v_F / Λis the length scale associated with Lambda. At the Luttinger liquid fixed point (l rightarrow infty) our RG result for A (k, o…
We compute the transport properties of one dimensional interacting electrons, also known as a Luttinger liquid. We show that a renormalization group study allows to obtain the temperature dependence of the conductivity in an intermediate temperature range. In this range the conductivity has a power-law like dependence in temperature. At low temperatures, the motion proceed by tunnelling between localized configurations. We compute this tunnelling rate using a bosonization representation and an instanton technique. We find a conductivity $σ(T) \propto e^{-β^{1/2}}$, where $β$ is the temperature…
We calculate the linear response conductance of electrons in a Luttinger liquid with arbitrary interaction g_2, and subject to a potential barrier of arbitrary strength, as a function of temperature. We map the Hamiltonian in the basis of scattering states into an effective low energy Hamiltonian in current algebra form. First the renormalization group (RG) equation for weak interaction is derived in the current operator language both using the operator product expansion and the equation of motion method. To access the strong coupling regime, two methods of deducing the RG equation from pertur…
Motivated by recently discovered quasi-one-dimensional superconductor K$_{2}$Cr$_{3}$As$_{3}$ with $D_{3h}$ lattice symmetry, we study one-dimensional three-orbital Hubbard model with generic electron repulsive interaction described by intra-orbital repulsion $U$, inter-orbital repulsion, and Hund's coupling $J$. As extracted from density functional theory calculation, two of the three atomic orbitals are degenerate ($E^{\prime}$ states) and the third one is non-degenerate ($A^{\prime}_1$), and the system is presumed to be at an incommensurate filling. With the help of bosonization, we have us…
Two one-dimensional Luttinger liquid systems coupled by Hund's coupling are studied by the renormalization group and the non-abelian bosonization methods. It is found that the Hund's coupling is always relevant irrespective of the repulsive interaction between electrons within each chain. The properties of the resulting strong coupling fixed point are discussed.
We provide strong evidence that the relaxation dynamics of one-dimensional, metallic Fermi systems resulting out of an abrupt amplitude change of the two-particle interaction has aspects which are universal in the Luttinger liquid sense: The leading long-time behavior of certain observables is described by universal functions of the equilibrium Luttinger liquid parameter and the renormalized velocity. We analytically derive those functions for the Tomonaga-Luttinger model and verify our hypothesis of universality by considering spinless lattice fermions within the framework of the density matr…
In the present work, we implement an explicit two-loop renormalization of a two-dimensional flat Fermi surface (FS) in the framework of a field theoretical renormalization group approach (RG). In our scheme, we derive the RG equations for both the coupling functions and Fermi energy. In this way, we are able to probe the existence of spin-charge separation by showing that the low-energy sector of the system is in fact a non-Fermi liquid. In addition, associating the true interacting FS to the infrared stable (IR) fixed point of the Fermi energy, we demonstrate here that it either acquires a sm…
We generalize nonlinear Luttinger liquid theory to describe the dynamics of one-dimensional quantum critical systems at low temperatures. Analyzing density-matrix renormalization group results for the spin autocorrelation function in the XXZ chain we provide, in particular, direct evidence for spin diffusion in sharp contrast to the exponential decay in time predicted by conventional Luttinger liquid theory. Furthermore, we discuss how the frequencies and exponents of the oscillatory contributions from the band edges are renormalized by irrelevant interactions and obtain excellent agreement be…
We investigate a model of a single resonant level coupled to the edge of a quantum wire in the Luttinger liquid phase or to the middle of a chiral Luttinger liquid via both tunneling and a contact interaction. Utilizing the Yuval-Anderson approach, we map this model onto a classical 1D Coulomb gas in which all the details of both the interactions in the lead and the level-lead interaction enter only through the corresponding Fermi-edge singularity exponent, which we explicitly evaluate using the Bethe ansatz solution for a particular model of the lead. Thus the population, dynamical capacitanc…
The Luttinger liquid model, which describes interacting electrons in a single-channel quantum wire, is completely integrable in the absence of disorder and as such does not exhibit any relaxation to equilibrium. We consider relaxation processes induced by inelastic electron-electron interactions in a disordered Luttinger liquid, focusing on the equilibration rate and its essential differences from the electron-electron scattering rate as well as the rate of phase relaxation. In the first part of the paper, we review the basic concepts in the disordered Luttinger liquid at equilibrium. These in…
We discuss effects of $1/r^β$ type long-range (LR) interactions in a tight-binding model by utilizing the bosonization technique, renormalization group and conformal field theory (CFT). We obtain the low energy action known for Kibble's model which generates the mass gap in 3 dimension when $β=1$, the Coulomb force case. In one dimension, the dispersion relations predict that the system remains gapless even for $β=1$ and the existences of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid (TLL) when $β> 1$. When $β=1$, the LR interactions break TLL in the long wavelength limits, even if the strength is very small. We …
The temperature-dependent uniform magnetic susceptibility of interacting electrons in one dimension is calculated using several methods. At low temperature, the renormalization group reaveals that the Luttinger liquid spin susceptibility $χ(T) $ approaches zero temperature with an infinite slope in striking contrast with the Fermi liquid result and with the behavior of the compressibility in the absence of umklapp scattering. This effect comes from the leading marginally irrelevant operator, in analogy with the Heisenberg spin 1/2 antiferromagnetic chain. Comparisons with Monte Carlo simulatio…
We report temperature-dependent neutron scattering measurements of the local dynamic structure factor in the quantum spin ladder (C$_{7}$H$_{10}$N)$_{2}$CuBr$_{4}$ in a magnetic field $H=9$~T, in its gapless quantum-critical phase. We show that the measured quantity has a scaling form consistent with expectations for a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid with attraction. The measured Luttinger parameter $K\approx1.25$ and scaling function are in excellent agreement with density matrix renormalization group numerical calculations for the underlying spin Hamiltonian.
Power law suppression of local electronic tunneling density of states (TDOS) in the zero-energy limit is a hallmark of Luttinger liquid (LL) phase of the interacting 1-D electron system. We present a theoretical model which hosts LL state with the surprising feature of enhancement rather than suppression in local TDOS originating from non-local and repulsive density-density interactions. Importantly, we find enhancement of TDOS in the manifold of parameter space where the system is stable in the renormalization group (RG) sense. We argue that enhancement of TDOS along with RG stability is poss…
In these lecture notes, the basic physics of Fermi liquids and Luttinger liquids is presented. Fermi liquids are discussed both from a phenomenological viewpoint, in relation to microscopic approaches, and as renormalization group fixed points. Luttinger liquids are introduced using the bosonization formalism, and their essential differences with Fermi liquids are pointed out. Applications to transport effects, the effect of disorder, quantum spin chains, and spin ladders, both insulating and metallic, are given.
We propose a nonperturbative renormalization-group (NPRG) approach to fermion systems in the two-particle-irreducible (2PI) effective action formalism, based on an exact RG equation for the Luttinger-Ward functional. This approach enables us to describe phases with spontaneously broken symmetries while satisfying the Mermin-Wagner theorem. We show that it is possible to choose the Hartree-Fock--RPA theory as initial condition of the RG flow and argue that the 2PI-NPRG is not restricted to the weak-coupling limit. An expansion of the Luttinger-Ward functional about the minimum of the 2PI effect…
Non-equilibrium bosonization technique is used to study current fluctuations of interacting electrons in a single-channel quantum wire representing a Luttinger liquid (LL) conductor. An exact expression for the full counting statistics of the transmitted charge is derived. It is given by Fredholm determinant of the counting operator with a time dependent scattering phase. The result has a form of counting statistics of non-interacting particles with fractional charges, induced by scattering off the boundaries between the LL wire and the non-interacting leads.
Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chains in a sufficiently strong magnetic field are Luttinger liquids, whose parameters depend on the actual magnetization of the chain. Here we present precise numerical estimates of the Luttinger liquid dressed charge $Z$, which determines the critical exponents, by calculating the magnetization and quadrupole operator profiles for $S=1/2$ and S=1 chains using the density matrix renormalization group method. Critical amplitudes and the scattering length at the chain ends are also determined. Although both systems are Luttinger liquids the characteristic param…
Temperature dependent high resolution photoemission spectra of quasi-1 dimensional Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$ evince a strong renormalization of its Luttinger liquid density-of-states anomalous exponent. We trace this new effect to interacting charge neutral critical modes that emerge naturally from the two-band nature of the material. Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$ is shown thereby to be a paradigm material that is capable of revealing new Luttinger physics.
The density-matrix renormalization-group (DMRG) algorithm is extended to treat time-dependent problems. The method provides a systematic and robust tool to explore out-of-equilibrium phenomena in quantum many-body systems. We illustrate the method by showing that attractive interactions enhance the tunneling current between two Luttinger liquids, whereas repulsive interactions suppress it, in qualitative agreement with analytical predictions. Enhancement of the transport current through a quantum dot in the Kondo regime is also exhibited.
