The invisibility cloak has been a long-standing dream for many researchers over the decades. By transforming space and light propagation, a three-dimensional (3D) object can be perceived as having reduced number of dimensions, in the form of points, lines, and thin sheets, making it "undetectable" judging from scattered field. Although a variety of cloaking devices have been reported at microwave and optical frequencies, the Terahertz (THz) domain remains unexplored. Moreover, it should be noted that all the previous experimental demonstrations are performed in a two-dimensional (2D) waveguide configuration. Although those works represent a critical step in validating the concept of the invisibility cloak, one would expect the cloaking device to be realized in 3D with the ability to cloak an object of realistic size. This requires the construction of an optically large cloaking device with features much smaller than the wavelength. Fabricating 3D structures with aspect ratio close to 100:1 is obviously a challenging task. Here, we report an experimental demonstration of a 3D THz ground plane cloak. Reflection terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) was employed to characterize the cloaking samples. Two distinct reflection peaks can be clearly observed across a broad frequency range, which is caused by the reflection at the surface of the bump. The measured peak positions are consistent with the numerical simulation peak positions. By contrast, in the spectral map of the cloak sample, the wavefront is relatively smooth with a single peak.
Terahertz quantum cascade laser sources based on intra-cavity difference frequency generation from mid-IR devices are an important asset for applications in rotational molecular spectroscopy and sensing, beingthe only electrically pumped device able to operate in the 0.6-6 THz range without the need of bulky andexpensive liquid helium cooling. Here we present comb operation obtained by intra-cavity mixing of adistributed feedback laser at λ = 6.5 μm and a Fabry-Pérot device at around λ = 6.9 μm. The resultingultra-broadband THz emission extends from 1.8 to 3.3 THz, with a total output power of…
We are reporting on terahertz generation from organic crystal BNA using a 1.15 to 1.55 um near infrared pump. We observed a very large emission spectrum extending up to 7 THz, compared to 2.5 THz from Ti:Sa pump in previous reports. The maximum optical-to-THz conversion efficiency in our experiment was 0.8% at 1 kHz repetition rate and without saturation leading to a peak electric field of 1 GV/m. Our results show pronounced phase matching privilege for intense terahertz generation using a pump in the 1.15 to 1.25 um range where high energy near infrared pump sources operate.
We report a homogeneous quantum cascade laser (QCL) emitting at Terahertz (THz) frequencies, with a total spectral emission of about 0.6 THz centered around 3.3 THz, a current density dynamic range of Jdr=1.53, and a continuous wave output power of 7 mW. The analysis of the intermode beatnote unveils that the devised laser operates as optical frequency comb (FC) synthesizer over the whole laser operational regime, with up to 36 optically active laser modes delivering ~ 200 uW of optical power per comb tooth, a power level unreached so far in any THz QCL FC. A stable and narrow single beatnote,…
We demonstrate a high temperature performance quantum detector of Terahertz (THz) radiation based on three-dimensional metamaterial. The metamaterial unit cell consists of an inductor-capacitor (LC) resonator laterally coupled with antenna elements. The absorbing region, consisting of semiconductor quantum wells is contained in the strongly ultra-subwavelength capacitors of the LC structure. The high radiation loss of the antenna allows strongly increased collection efficiency for the incident THz radiation, while the small effective volume of the LC resonator allows intense light-matter coupl…

Recent emergence of metasurfaces has enabled the development of ultra-thin flat optical components through different wavefront shaping techniques at various wavelengths. However, due to the non-adaptive nature of conventional metasurfaces, the focal point of the resulting optics needs to be fixed at the design stage, thus severely limiting its reconfigurability and applicability. In this paper, we aim to overcome such constraint by presenting a flat reflective component that can be reprogrammed to focus terahertz waves at a desired point in the near-field region. To this end, we first propose …
Dual-comb generation from a single laser cavity provides a simple and high-performance solution to time sampling applications. We demonstrate a compact single-cavity dual-comb laser operating at gigahertz repetition rates and high repetition rate differences up to more than 100 kHz with sub-100 fs pulse duration. The single cavity approach leads to passive common noise suppression resulting in ultra-low relative timing jitter and fully resolvable comb lines in free-running operation. We showcase the laser performance with two application demonstrations: (a) time-domain spectroscopy of acetylen…
A well-known empirical rule for the demand of wireless communication systems is that of Edholm's law of bandwidth. It states that the demand for bandwidth in wireless short-range communications doubles every 18 months. With the growing demand for bandwidth and the decreasing cell size of wireless systems, terahertz (THz) communication systems are expected to become increasingly important in modern day applications. With this expectation comes the need for protecting users' privacy and security in the best way possible. With that in mind, we show that quantum key distribution can operate in the…
Traditional imaging systems, such as the eye or cameras, image scenes that lie in the direct line-of-sight (LoS). Most objects are opaque in the optical and infrared regimes and can limit dramatically the field of view (FoV). Current approaches to see around occlusions exploit the multireflection propagation of signals from neighboring surfaces either in the microwave or the optical bands. Using lower frequency signals anatomical information is limited and images suffer from clutter while optical systems encounter diffuse scattering from most surfaces and suffer from path loss, thus limiting t…
We report on the engineering of broadband quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) emitting at Terahertz (THz) frequencies, which exploit a heterogeneous active region scheme and have a current density dynamic range (Jdr) of 3.2, significantly larger than the state of the art, over a 1.3 THz bandwidth. We demonstrate that the devised broadband lasers operate as THz optical frequency comb synthesizers in continuous wave, with a maximum optical output power of 4 mW (0.73 mW in the comb regime). Measurement of the intermode beatnote map reveals a clear dispersion-compensated frequency comb regime extending …
