We present two types of metamaterial-based spectral bandpass filters for the terahertz (THz) frequency range. The metamaterials are specifically designed to operate for waves at normal incidence and to be independent of the field polarization. The functional structures are embedded in films of benzocyclobutene (BCB) resulting in large-area, free-standing and flexible membranes with low intrinsic loss.
The proposed filters are investigated by THz time-domain spectroscopy and show a pronounced transmission peak with over 80]% amplitude transmission in the passband and a transmission rejection down to the noise level in the stopbands. The measurements are supported by numerical simulations which evidence that the high transmission response is related to the excitation of trapped modes.
We present octave-wide bandpass filters in the terahertz (THz) region based on bilayer-metamaterial (BLMM) structures. The passband region has a super-Gaussian shape with a maximum transmittance approaching 70% and a typical stopband rejection of 20 dB. The design is based on a metasurface consisting of a metallic square-hole array deposited on a transparent polymer, which is stacked on top of an identical metasurface with a sub-wavelength separation. The superimposed metasurface structures were designed using finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations and fabricated using a photolithogr…
Molecular recognition and discrimination of carbohydrates are important because carbohydrates perform essential roles in most living organisms for energy metabolism and cell-to-cell communication. Nevertheless, it is difficult to identify or distinguish various carbohydrate molecules owing to the lack of a significant distinction in the physical or chemical characteristics. Although there has been considerable effort to develop a sensing platform for individual carbohydrates selectively using chemical receptors or an ensemble array, their detection and discrimination limits have been as high i…
We propose using THz frequency selective surfaces interrogated with THz subwavelength optical fibers as sensors for monitoring of the optical properties of thick films that are brought in contact with such surfaces. Changes in the test film thickness and absorption losses can be measured simultaneously by interpreting variations in the spectral resonant features in the fiber transmission and reflection spectra. Particularly, changes in the film thickness induce strong shifts in the fiber transmission peaks, while changes in the film absorption induce notable amplitude variations in the fiber r…
Current detection and identification of micro-organisms is based on either rather unspecific rapid microscopy or on more accurate complex, time-consuming procedures. In a medical context, the determination of the bacteria Gram type is of significant interest. The diagnostic of microbial infection often requires the identification of the microbiological agent responsible for the infection, or at least the identification of its family (Gram type), in a matter of minutes. In this work, we propose to use terahertz frequency range antennas for the enhanced selective detection of bacteria types. Sev…
Coherent phonon-polaritons have attracted a considerable amount of interest owing to their relevance to nonlinear optics and terahertz (THz)-wave emissions. Therefore, it is important to analyze the THz electric-fields of phonon-polaritons. However, in the majority of previous measurements, only a single component of the THz electric field was detected. In this paper, we demonstrate that pump-probe electro-optical imaging measurements using the Stokes parameters of probe polarization enable the phase-resolved selective detection of THz electric-field components that are associated with the pho…
Electrically independent terahertz (THz) quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) are optically coupled in a Y configuration. Dual frequency, electronically switchable emission is achieved in one QCL using an aperiodic grating, designed using computer-generated hologram techniques, incorporated directly into the QCL waveguide by focussed ion beam milling. Multi-moded emission around 2.9 THz is inhibited, lasing instead occurring at switchable grating-selected frequencies of 2.88 and 2.92 THz. This photonic control and switching behaviour is selectively and reversibly transferred to the second, unmodified…

Transmission through a subwavelength terahertz fiber, which is positioned in parallel to a frequency selective surface, is studied using several finite element tools. Both the band diagram technique and the port-based scattering matrix technique are used to explain the nature of various resonances in the fiber transmission spectrum. First, we observe that spectral positions of most of the transmission peaks in the port-based simulation can be related to the positions of Van Hove singularities in the band diagram of a corresponding infinite periodic system. Moreover, spectral shape of most of t…
We will report on the electromagnetic response due to induced dipolar currents in metamaterials of 2-dimensional array of metallic elements. Used as frequency selectors, the metamaterial transmittance presents a single resonance in the region from 1 to 8 THz that can be easily selected and scaled maintaining unaltered the quality factor by choosing the size and shape of the planar metallic element and exploiting the scalability properties of the Maxwell equations. Basing on these studies, we have designed and tested a series of simple and inexpensive frequency selective metamaterials fabricate…
Manipulating the polarisation of light is crucial for sensing and imaging applications. One such aspect in particular is selective transmission of one circular polarisation (spin) when light is transmitted through a medium or a device. However, most present methods of achieving this have relatively low efficiency and selectivity, whilst high selectivity examples rely on lossy and complex three-dimensional helical or multilayer structures. Here, we propose a dielectric metamaterial approach for achieving spin-selective transmission of electromagnetic waves, utilizing spin-controlled constructiv…
Selective enhancement of coherent optical phonons in Bi-Sb mixed crystals has been performed using terahertz (THz) rate pulse trains generated by spatial phase modulation of femtosecond pulse with a liquid-crystal spatial light modulator. The profile of the shaped pulse train has a flat-toped shape. The Bi-Bi, Bi-Sb, and Sb-Sb vibrations can be enhanced and canceled selectively for pulse trains with a suitable repetition rate.
We report here fabrication of interdigitated photoconductive antenna (iPCA) terahertz (THz) emitters based on plasmonic electrode design. Novel design of this iPCA enables it to work without microlens array focusing, which is otherwise required for photo excitation of selective photoconductive regions to avoid the destructive interference of emitted THz radiation from oppositely biased regions. Benefit of iPCA over single active region PCA is that photo excitation can be done at larger area, hence avoiding the saturation effected at higher optical excitation density. The emitted THz radiation …
We present a computational study of terahertz optical properties of a grating-coupled plasmonic structure based on micrometer-thin InSb layers. We find two strong absorption resonances that we interpret as standing surface plasmon modes and investigate their dispersion relations, dependence on InSb thickness, and the spatial distribution of the electric field. The observed surface plasmon modes are well described by a simple theory of the air/InSb/air trilayer. The plasmonic response of the grating/InSb structure is highly sensitive to the dielectric environment and the presence of an analyte …
Switchable metamaterials offer unique solutions for efficiently manipulating electromagnetic waves, particularly for terahertz waves, which has been difficult since naturally occurring materials rarely respond to terahertz frequencies controllably. However, few terahertz modulators demonstrated to date exhibit simultaneously low attenuation and high modulation depth. In this letter we propose a new class of electrically-tunable terahertz metamaterial modulators employing metallic frequency-selective-surfaces (FSS) in conjunction with capacitively-tunable layers of electrons, promising near 100…
Achieving efficient, high-power harmonic generation in the terahertz spectral domain has technological applications, for example in sixth generation (6G) communication networks. Massless Dirac fermions possess extremely large terahertz nonlinear susceptibilities and harmonic conversion efficiencies. However, the observed maximum generated harmonic power is limited, because of saturation effects at increasing incident powers, as shown recently for graphene. Here, we demonstrate room-temperature terahertz harmonic generation in a Bi$_2$Se$_3$ topological insulator and topological-insulator-grati…
The ideal laser source for the emerging research field of nonlinear Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy should offer radiation with a large versatility and deliver both ultra-intense multi-octave spanning single-cycle pulses and user-selectable multi-cycle pulses at narrow linewidth. The absence of such a table-top source has hampered advances in numerous THz disciplines including imaging, nonlinear photonics and spectroscopy, selective out-of-equilibrium excitation of condensed matter and quantum systems. Here we introduce a highly versatile table-top THz laser platform providing single-cycle GV/m t…
Strong-field mid-infrared pump--terahertz (THz) probe spectroscopy has been proven as a powerful tool for light control of different orders in strongly correlated materials. We report the construction of an ultrafast broadband infrared pump--THz probe system in reflection geometry. A two-output optical parametric amplifier is used for generating mid-infrared pulses with GaSe as the nonlinear crystal. The setup is capable of pumping bulk materials at wavelengths ranging from 1.2 $μ$m to 15 $μ$m and beyond, and detecting the subtle, transient photoinduced changes in the reflected electric field …
We theoretically investigate the interaction between the conductive graphene layer with the dual-spectral electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) metamaterial and achieve independent amplitude modulation of the transmission peaks in terahertz (THz) regime. The dual-spectral EIT resonance results from the strong near field coupling effects between the bright cut wire resonator (CWR) in the middle and two dark double-split ring resonators (DSRRs) on the two sides. By integrating monolayer graphene under the dark mode resonators, the two transmission peaks of the EIT resonance can exhibit …

Terahertz (THz) Time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) is a broadband spectroscopic technique spreading its uses in multiple fields: in science from material science to biology, in industry where it measures the thickness of a paint layer during the painting operation. Using such practical commercial apparatus with broad spectrum for gas spectroscopy could be a major asset for air quality monitoring and tracking of atmospheric composition. However, gas spectroscopy needs high resolution and the usual approach in THz-TDS, where the recorded time trace is Fourier transform, suffers from resolution l…
This article presents the design of two dual-band graphene-based absorbers for terahertz frequencies. The absorbers are composed of two-dimensional (2D)arrays of ribbons and disks printed on a ground plane backed dielectric spacer. The design is based on the excitation of a specific plasmon polariton of the graphene patterned array at each resonance band. An analytical circuit model is used to derive closed-form relations for the geometrical parameters of the absorber and graphene parameters. The graphene patterned array appears as a surface admittance made of an infinite parallel array of ser…
The shape of a few-cycle terahertz (THz) laser pulse can be optimized to provide control over conduction band populations in graphene. To demonstrate this control in a theoretical way, a spectral parametrization of the driving pulse using $B$-splines is used in order to obtain experimentally realistic pulses of bandwidth $\sim$ 30 THz. Optimization of the spectral shape is performed via differential evolution, using the $B$-splines expansion coefficients as decision variables. Numerical results show the possibility of changing the carrier density in graphene by a factor of 4 for a fixed pulse …
Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) is a non-invasive, non-contact and label-free technique for biological and chemical sensing as THz-spectra is less energetic and lies in the characteristic vibration frequency regime of proteins and DNA molecules. However, THz-TDS is less sensitive for detection of micro-organisms of size equal to or less than $ λ/100 $ (where, $ λ$ is wavelength of incident THz wave) and, molecules in extremely low concentrated solutions (like, a few femtomolar). After successful high-throughput fabrication of nanostructures, nanoantennas and metamaterials were fou…
The unique optoelectronic properties of single layer graphene (SLG) are ideal for the development of photonic devices across a broad range of frequencies, from X-rays to microwaves. In the terahertz (THz) range (0.1-10 THz frequency) this has led to the development of optical modulators, non-linear sources, and photodetectors, with state-of-the-art performances. A key challenge is the integration of SLG-based active elements with pre-existing technological platforms in a scalable way, while maintaining performance level unperturbed. Here, we report on the development of room temperature THz de…
The nature of light-matter interaction is governed by the spatial-temporal structures of a light field and material wavefunctions. The emergence of the light beam with transverse phase vortex, or equivalently orbital angular momentum (OAM) has been providing intriguing possibilities to induce unconventional optical transitions beyond the framework of the electric dipole interaction. The uniqueness stems from the OAM transfer from light to material, as demonstrated using the bound electron of a single trapped ion. However, many aspects of the vortex light-matter interaction are still unexplored…
