Let $S$ be a finite non-commutative semigroup. The commuting graph of $S$, denoted $\cg(S)$, is the graph whose vertices are the non-central elements of $S$ and whose edges are the sets $\{a,b\}$ of vertices such that $a\ne b$ and $ab=ba$. Denote by $T(X)$ the semigroup of full transformations on a finite set $X$. Let $J$ be any ideal of $T(X)$ such that $J$ is different from the ideal of constant transformations on $X$. We prove that if $|X|\geq4$, then, with a few exceptions, the diameter of $\cg(J)$ is 5. On the other hand, we prove that for every positive integer $n$, there exists a semigroup $S$ such that the diameter of $\cg(S)$ is $n$. We also study the left paths in $\cg(S)$, that is, paths $a_1-a_2-...-a_m$ such that $a_1\ne a_m$ and $a_1a_i=a_ma_i$ for all $i\in \{1,\ldot, m\}$. We prove that for every positive integer $n\geq2$, except $n=3$, there exists a semigroup whose shortest left path has length $n$. As a corollary, we use the previous results to solve a purely algebraic old problem posed by B.M. Schein.
We investigate properties which ensure that a given finite graph is the commuting graph of a group or semigroup. We show that all graphs on at least two vertices such that no vertex is adjacent to all other vertices is the commuting graph of some semigroup. Moreover, we obtain a complete classification of the graphs with an isolated vertex or edge that are the commuting graph of a group and the cycles that are the commuting graph of a centrefree semigroup.
The commuting graph of a finite non-commutative semigroup S, denoted by Δ(S), is the simple graph whose vertices are the non-central elements of S and two distinct vertices x; y are adjacent if xy = yx. In the present paper, we study various graph-theoretic properties of the commuting graph Δ(B_n) of Brandt semigroup B_n including its diameter, clique number, chromatic number, independence number, strong metric dimension and dominance number. Moreover, we obtain the automorphism group Aut(Δ(Bn)) and the endomorphism monoid End(Δ(Bn)) of Δ(Bn). We show that Aut(Δ(Bn)) = S_n \times Z_2, where S_…
In this paper, we consider various graphs, namely: power graph, cyclic graph, enhanced power graph and commuting graph, on a finite semigroup $S$. For an arbitrary pair of these four graphs, we classify finite semigroups such that the graphs in this pair are equal. In this connection, for each of the graph we also give a necessary and sufficient condition on $S$ such that it is complete. The work of this paper generalize the corresponding results obtained for groups.
A semigroup $S$ is said to be right pseudo-finite if the universal right congruence can be generated by a finite set $U\subseteq S\times S$, and there is a bound on the length of derivations for an arbitrary pair $(s,t)\in S\times S$ as a consequence of those in $U$. This article explores the existence and nature of a minimal ideal in a right pseudo-finite semigroup. Continuing the theme started in an earlier work by Dandan et al., we show that in several natural classes of monoids, right pseudo-finiteness implies the existence of a completely simple minimal ideal. This is the case for orthodo…
We call a semigroup $S$ right noetherian if it satisfies the ascending chain condition on right ideals, and we say that $S$ satisfies ACCPR if it satisfies the ascending chain condition on principal right ideals. We investigate the behavior of these two conditions with respect to ideals and ideal extensions, with a particular focus on minimal and 0-minimal one-sided ideals. In particular, we show that the property of satisfying ACCPR is inherited by right and left ideals. On the other hand, we exhibit an example of a right noetherian semigroup with a minimal ideal that is not right noetherian.
Given two numerical semigroups $S$ and $T$ and a positive integer $d$, $S$ is said to be one over $d$ of $T$ if $S=\{s \in \mathbb{N} \ | \ ds \in T \}$ and in this case $T$ is called a $d$-fold of $S$. We prove that the minimal genus of the $d$-folds of $S$ is $g + \lceil \frac{(d-1)f}{2} \rceil$, where $g$ and $f$ denote the genus and the Frobenius number of $S$. The case $d=2$ is a problem proposed by Robles-Pérez, Rosales, and Vasco. Furthermore, we find the minimal genus of the symmetric doubles of $S$ and study the particular case when $S$ is almost symmetric. Finally, we study the Frobe…
We introduce the depth parameters of a finite semigroup, which measure how hard it is to produce an element in the minimum ideal when we consider generating sets satisfying some minimality conditions. We estimate such parameters for some families of finite semigroups, and we obtain an upper bound for wreath products and direct products of two finite (transformation) monoids.
