This paper examines in a new way some known facts about numerical semigroups especially when the number of minimal generators (that is the embedding dimension) is at most three and at least two minimal generators are coprime. For such semigroups, an algorithm is re-investigated to find the pseudo-Frobenius numbers. A certain family of $n$ dimensional numerical semigroups of type at most $n-1$ is also given.
In this article, we study the quotients of numerical semigroups, generated by two coprime positive numbers, named (a,b) over d. We give formulae for the usual invariants of these semigroups, expressed in terms of continued fraction expansions and Ostrowski-like numeration of some rationals, simply related to entries a, b, d. So, we obtain quadratic complexity algorithms to compute these invariants. As a consequence, we will prove that, for these numerical semigroups, the type is always lower than the embedding dimension and deduce Wilf's property. We also consider the '' reverse problem'' : gi…
This paper provides a formula for the minimal relations and the Frobenius number of a numerical semigroup minimally generated by three pairwise coprime positive integers.
Given three pairwise coprime positive integers $a_1,a_2,a_3 \in \mathbb{Z}^+$ we show the existence of a relation between the sets of the first elements of the three quotients $\frac{\langle a_i,a_j \rangle}{a_k}$ that can be made for every $\{i.j,k\}=\{1,2,3\}$. Then we use this result to give an improved version of Johnson's semi-explicit formula for the Frobenius number $g(a_1,a_2,a_3)$ without restriction on the choice of $a_1,a_2,a_3$ and to give an explicit formula for a particular class of numerical semigroups.
Given coprime positive integers $g_1 < \ldots < g_e$, the Frobenius number $F=F(g_1,\ldots,g_e)$ is the largest integer not representable as a linear combination of $g_1,\ldots,g_e$ with non-negative integer coefficients. Let $n$ denote the number of all representable non-negative integers less than $F$; Wilf conjectured that $F+1 \le e n$. We provide bounds for $g_1$ and for the type of the numerical semigroup $S=\langle g_1,\ldots,g_e \rangle$ in function of $e$ and $n$, and use these bounds to prove that $F+1 \le q e n$, where $q= \left \lceil \frac{F+1}{g_1} \right \rceil$, and $F+1 \le e …
In this paper, we introduce the concept of Arf special gaps of an Arf numerical semigroup, and an algorithm for computing all Arf special gaps of a given Arf numerical semigroup. We introduce the concept of Arf-irreducible numerical semigroups, and draw conclusions about all these concepts. We give a system of generators for the Frobenius variety and variety of families of Arf numerical semigroups. Moreover, we obtain the minimal Arf system of generators of a given Arf numerical semigroup.
Let $S,T$ be two numerical semigroups. We study when $S$ is one half of $T$, with $T$ almost symmetric. If we assume that the type of $T$, $t(T)$, is odd, then for any $S$ there exist infinitely many such $T$ and we prove that $1 \leq t(T) \leq 2t(S)+1$. On the other hand, if $t(T)$ is even, there exists such $T$ if and only if $S$ is almost symmetric and different from $\mathbb{N}$; in this case the type of $S$ is the number of even pseudo-Frobenius numbers of $T$. Moreover, we construct these families of semigroups using the numerical duplication with respect to a relative ideal.
In this paper we analyze the irreducibility of numerical semigroups with multiplicity up to four. Our approach uses the notion of Kunz-coordinates vector of a numerical semigroup recently introduced in (Blanco-Puerto, 2011). With this tool we also completely describe the whole family of minimal decompositions into irreducible numerical semigroups with the same multiplicity for this set of numerical semigroups. We give detailed examples to show the applicability of the methodology and conditions for the irreducibility of well-known families of numerical semigroups as those that are generated by…
We define a reflective numerical semigroup of genus $g$ as a numerical semigroup that has a certain reflective symmetry when viewed within $\mathbb{Z}$ as an array with $g$ columns. Equivalently, a reflective numerical semigroup has one gap in each residue class modulo $g$. In this paper, we give an explicit description for all reflective numerical semigroups. With this, we can describe the reflective members of well-known families of numerical semigroups as well as obtain formulas for the number of reflective numerical semigroups of a given genus or given Frobenius number.
Given two numerical semigroups $S$ and $T$ and a positive integer $d$, $S$ is said to be one over $d$ of $T$ if $S=\{s \in \mathbb{N} \ | \ ds \in T \}$ and in this case $T$ is called a $d$-fold of $S$. We prove that the minimal genus of the $d$-folds of $S$ is $g + \lceil \frac{(d-1)f}{2} \rceil$, where $g$ and $f$ denote the genus and the Frobenius number of $S$. The case $d=2$ is a problem proposed by Robles-Pérez, Rosales, and Vasco. Furthermore, we find the minimal genus of the symmetric doubles of $S$ and study the particular case when $S$ is almost symmetric. Finally, we study the Frobe…
Let $\CaC\subset \Q^p$ be a rational cone. An affine semigroup $S\subset \CaC$ is a $\CaC$-semigroup whenever $(\CaC\setminus S)\cap \N^p$ has only a finite number of elements. In this work, we study the tree of $\CaC$-semigroups, give a method to generate it and study their subsemigroups with minimal embedding dimension. We extend Wilf's conjecture for numerical semigroups to $\CaC$-semigroups and give some families of $\CaC$-semigroups fulfilling the extended conjecture. We also check that other conjectures on numerical semigroups seem to be also satisfied by $\CaC$-semigroups.
In this paper we introduce the notion of $n$-permutation numerical semigroup. While there are just three $2$-permutation numerical semigroups, there are infinitely many $n$-permutation numerical semigroups if $n > 2$. We construct $16$ families of $3$-permutation numerical semigroups and one family of $n$-permutation numerical semigroups. Finally we present some experimental data, which seem to support a conjecture about the classification of $3$-permutation numerical semigroups.
In this paper, we consider the set $\textit{NR}(G)$ of natural numbers which are not in the numerical semigroup generated by a compound sequence $G$. We generalize a result of Tuenter which completely characterizes $\textit{NR}(G)$. We use this result to compute Sylvester sums, and we give a direct application to the computation of weights of higher-order Weierstrass points on some families of complex algebraic curves.
We study the cyclotomic exponent sequence of a numerical semigroup $S,$ and we compute its values at the gaps of $S,$ the elements of $S$ with unique representations in terms of minimal generators, and the Betti elements $b\in S$ for which the set $\{a \in \operatorname{Betti}(S) : a \le_{S}b\}$ is totally ordered with respect to $\le_S$ (we write $a \le_S b$ whenever $a - b \in S,$ with $a,b\in S$). This allows us to characterize certain semigroup families, such as Betti-sorted or Betti-divisible numerical semigroups, as well as numerical semigroups with a unique Betti element, in terms of th…
