We construct a multimetric gravity theory containing N >= 3 copies of standard model matter and a corresponding number of metrics. In the Newtonian limit, this theory generates attractive gravitational forces within each matter sector, and repulsive forces of the same strength between matter from different sectors. This result demonstrates that the recently proven no-go theorem that forbids gravity theories of this type in N = 2 cannot be extended beyond the bimetric case. We apply our theory to cosmology and show that the repulsion between different types of matter may induce the observed accelerating expansion of the universe. In this way dark energy can be explained simply by dark copies of the well-understood standard model.
A remarkable property of naked singularities in general relativity is their repulsive nature. The effects generated by repulsive gravity are usually investigated by analyzing the trajectories of test particles which move in the effective potential of a naked singularity. This method is, however, coordinate and observer dependent. We propose to use the properties of the Riemann tensor in order to establish in an invariant manner the regions where repulsive gravity plays a dominant role. In particular, we show that in the case of the Kerr-Newman singularity and its special subcases the method de…
We investigate the existence of repulsive gravitational acceleration near naked singularities. The investigation is carried out by means of the acceleration tensor, which is a coordinate invariant object. We find that the gravitational acceleration is repulsive in the vicinity of the origin in the Reissner-Nordstrøm and in the Kerr space-times, and attractive at large distances in the expected Newtonian way. We further address the space-time of a point massive particle, which also exhibits repulsive effects near the origin.
In the present work we revisit a model consisting of a scalar field with a quartic self-interaction potential non-minimally (conformally) coupled to gravity [1]. When the scalar field vacuum is in a broken symmetry state, an effective gravitational constant emerges which, in certain regimes, can lead to gravitational repulsive effects when only ordinary radiation is coupled to gravity. In this case, a bouncing universe is shown to be the only cosmological solution admissible by the field equations when the scalar field is in such a broken symmetry state.
We show that in the inhomogeneous Lema{î}tre-Tolman-Bondi space-time there are specific regions in which repulsive gravity exists. To find these regions, we use an invariant definition of repulsive gravity based upon the behavior of the curvature eigenvalues. In addition, we analyze the effects of repulsive gravity on the dynamics of the gravitational collapse. In particular, we investigate the collapse in the case of the parabolic solution for the effective scale factor of the Lema{î}tre-Tolman-Bondi metric, corresponding to the marginally bound case. Exploring the corresponding cut-offs at w…
In this paper, we showed that gravity might have been repulsive in the first moments of the Universe! To find this, we used quantization of the anti-commuting space and derived a gravitational equation in the limit $T \gg T_p$, which shows interesting behaviors. We saw that gravity is repulsive in the distances less than $\mathcal{R} = 4.37 \times 10^{-32} \times \sqrt{M}$, where $M$ is the mass of the object which gives rise to the gravitational field. Also, we calculated an acceleration of the order $\simeq - 3.494 \times 10^{52}$ for the first moment of the Universe ($r = 0$), where the tem…
We demonstrate an alternative (with respect to the ones existing in literature) and more habitual for physicists derivation of exact solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations for the motion of a charged spherical membrane with tangential tension. We stress that the physically acceptable range of parameters for which the static and stable state of the membrane producing the Reissner-Nordstrom (RN) repulsive gravity effect exists. The concrete realization of such state for the Nambu-Goto membrane is described. The point is that membrane are able to cut out the central naked singularity region a…
We present a static, spherically symmetric, traversable wormhole solution to multimetric gravity which is sustained by only non-exotic matter, i.e., matter which satisfies all energy conditions. The possibility of this solution arises from the fact that under certain conditions the multimetric gravitational field equations reduce to the Einstein equations, but with a negative effective gravitational constant. We show that the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner mass of this wormhole vanishes, so that it appears massless to observers in the asymptotically flat spacetime. We finally speculate on the feasibili…
We exploit the possibility of existence of a repulsive gravity phase in the evolution of the Universe. A toy model with a free scalar field minimally coupled to gravity, but with the "wrong sign" for the energy and negative curvature for the spatial section, is studied in detail. The background solutions display a bouncing, non-singular Universe. The model is well-behaved with respect to tensor perturbations. But, it exhibits growing models with respect to scalar perturbations whose maximum occurs in the bouncing. Hence, large inhomogeneties are produced. At least for this case, a repulsive ph…
Recently we discussed a multimetric gravity theory containing several copies of standard model matter each of which couples to its own metric tensor. This construction contained dark matter sectors interacting repulsively with the visible matter sector, and was shown to lead to cosmological late-time acceleration. In order to test the theory with high-precision experiments within the solar system we here construct a simple extension of the parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism for multimetric gravitational backgrounds. We show that a simplified version of this extended formalism allows t…
In this paper we work out collapsing conditions for a spherical star in the weak field limit of the $R+μ^4/R$ gravity and discuss the importance of the parameter $μ$ to generate different criteria in the theory. Such criteria are proved to be resulting in a variety of different fates for the evolution of the outer shells of stars. Furthermore, we investigate the special case of violating the first junction condition and point out corresponding contradictions to the normal cases. These results show that the consistency of the $R+μ^4/R$ theory of gravity with the common astrophysical predictions…
Repulsive gravity has been investigated in several scenarios near compact objects by using different intuitive approaches. Here, we propose an invariant method to characterize regions of repulsive gravity, associated to black holes and naked singularities. Our method is based upon the behavior of the curvature tensor eigenvalues, and leads to an invariant definition of a \emph{repulsion radius}. The repulsion radius determines a physical region, which can be interpreted as a repulsion sphere, where the effects due to repulsive gravity naturally arise. Further, we show that the use of effective…
Repulsive gravity is a well known characteristic of naked singularities. In this work, we explore light surfaces and find new effects of repulsive gravity. We compare Kerr naked singularities with the corresponding black hole counterparts and find certain structures that are identified as horizon remnants. We argue that these features might be significant for the comprehension of processes that lead to the formation or eventually destruction of black hole Killing horizons. These features can be detected by observing photon orbits, particularly close to the rotation axis, which can be used to d…
We study the null geodesics in a static circularly symmetric (SCS) black hole spacetime which is a solution in the $(2+1)$-dimensional massive gravity proposed by Bergshoeff, Hohm and Townsend (BHT massive gravity). We obtain analytic solutions for the null geodesic equation in the SCS black hole background and find the explicit form of deflection angles. We see that for various values of the impact parameter, the deflection angle can be positive, negative or even zero in this black hole spacetime. The negative deflection angle indicates the repulsive behavior of the gravity which comes from t…
We compute the lowest frequency radial oscillation modes of boson stars. It is assumed that the object is made of pseudo-Goldstone bosons subjected to a scalar potential that leads to a repulsive self-interaction force, and which is characterized by two unknown mass scales $m$ (mass of the particle) and $F$ (decay constant). First we integrate the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations for the hydrostatic equilibrium of the star, and then we solve the Sturm-Liouville boundary value problem for the perturbations using the shooting method. The effective potential that enters into the Schr{ö}dinger…
This article reports on emergence of structures in a class of alternative theories of gravity. These theories do not have any horizon, flatness, initial cosmological singularity and (possibly) quantization problems. The model is characterised by a dynamically induced gravitational constant with a ``wrong'' sign corresponding to repulsive gravitation on the large scale. A non - minimal coupling of a scalar field in the model can give rise to non - topological solitons in the theory. This results in domains (gravity - balls) inside which an effective, canonical, attractive gravitational constant…
We discuss the circumstances under which gravity might be repulsive rather than attractive. In particular we show why our standard solar system distance scale gravitational intuition need not be a reliable guide to the behavior of gravitational phenomena on altogether larger distance scales such as cosmological, and argue that in fact gravity actually gets to act repulsively on such distance scales. With such repulsion a variety of current cosmological problems (the flatness, horizon, dark matter, universe age, cosmic acceleration and cosmological constant problems) are then all naturally reso…
We investigate, in the transverse traceless (TT) gauge, the generation of the relic background of gravitational waves, generated during an early inflationary stage, on the framework of a large-scale repulsive gravity model. We calculate the spectrum of the tensor metric fluctuations of an effective 4D Schwarzschild-de-Sitter metric, which is obtained after implementing a planar coordinate transformation on a 5D Ricci-flat metric solution, in the context of a non-compact Kaluza-Klein theory of gravity. We found that the spectrum is nearly scale invariant under certain conditions. One interestin…
The Raychaudhuri equation enables to examine the whole spacetime structure without specific solutions of Einstein's equations, playing a central role for the understanding of the gravitational interaction in Cosmology. In General Relativity, without considering a cosmological constant, a non-positive contribution in the Raychaudhuri equation is usually interpreted as the manifestation of the attractive character of gravity. In this case, particular energy conditions -- indeed the strong energy condition -- must be assumed in order to guarantee the attractive character. In the context of f(R) g…
Self-interacting dark matter (SIDM), especially bosonic, has been considered a promising candidate to replace cold dark matter (CDM) as it resolves some of the problems associated with CDM. Here, we rule out the possibility that dark matter is a repulsive boson in thermal equilibrium. We develop the model first proposed by Goodman (2000) and derive the equation of state at finite temperature. Isothermal spherical halo models indicate a Bose-Einstein condensed core surrounded by a non-degenerate envelope, with an abrupt density drop marking the boundary between the two phases. Comparing this fe…
I present two examples in which the curvature singularity of a radiation-dominated Universe is regularized by (a) the repulsive effects of spin interactions, and (b) the repulsive effects arising from a breaking of the local gravitational gauge symmetry. In both cases the collapse of an initial, asymptotically flat state is stopped, and the Universe bounces towards a state of decelerated expansion. The emerging picture is typical of the pre-big bang scenario, with the main difference that the string cosmology dilaton is replaced by a classical radiation fluid, and the solutions are not duality…
The existence of current-time universe's acceleration is usually modeled by means of two main strategies. The first makes use of a dark energy barotropic fluid entering \emph{by hand} the energy-momentum tensor of Einstein's theory. The second lies on extending the Hilbert-Einstein action giving rise to the class of extended theories of gravity. In this work, we propose a third approach, derived as an intrinsic geometrical effect of space-time, which provides repulsive regions under certain circumstances. We demonstrate that the effects of repulsive gravity naturally emerge in the field of a h…
The current acceleration of the Universe is one of the most puzzling issues in theoretical physics nowadays. We are far from giving an answer on this letter to its true nature. Yet, with the observations we have at hand, we analyse the different patterns that the gravitational potential can show in the future. Surprisingly, gravity not only can get weaker in the near future, it can even become repulsive; or equivalently, the gravitational potential may become negative. We show this remark by using one of the simplest phenomenological model we can imagine for dark energy. We have as well review…
We look for a graviton-dilaton theory which can predict non trivial values of the PPN parameters $β$ and/or $γ$ for a charge neutral point star, without any naked singularity. With the potential for dilaton $ϕ$ set to zero, it contains one arbitrary function $ψ(ϕ)$. Our requirements impose certain constraints on $ψ$, which lead to the following generic and model independent novel results: For a charge neutral point star, the gravitational force becomes repulsive at distances of the order of, but greater than, the Schwarzschild radius $r_0$. There is also no horizon for $r > r_0$. These results…
Recent observation of supernovae type Ia show clearly that there is a large scale repulsive force in the Universe. Neither of the four known fundamental interactions can account for this repulsive force. Gravity is known to be the interaction responsible for the large scale structure and evolution of the Universe. The problem with gravity is that it gives rise to a force which is attractive only. Gravity theories, including General Relativity, deals with gravity as an attractive force. Although this is consistent with our experience in the solar system and other similar astrophysical systems, …
We develop a stochastic approach to study scalar field fluctuations of the inflaton field in an early inflationary universe with a black-hole (BH), which is described by an effective 4D SdS metric. Considering a 5D Ricci-flat SdS static metric, we implement a planar coordinate transformation, in order to obtain a 5D cosmological metric, from which the effective 4D SdS metric can be induced on a 4D hypersurface. We found that at the end of inflation, the squared fluctuations of the inflaton field are not exactly scale independent and becomes sensitive with the mass of the BH.
This is an invited contribution to be included in a multi-authored book on "Dark Energy", to be edited by Pilar Ruiz-Lapuente and published by Cambridge University Press.
We study the constraints on the dark energy model with constant equation of state parameter $w=p/ρ$ and the holographic dark energy model by using the weak gravity conjecture. The combination of weak gravity conjecture and the observational data gives $w<-0.7$ at the $3σ$ confidence level. The holographic dark energy model realized by a scalar field is in swampland.
The logarithmic $R^2$-corrected $F(R)$ gravity is investigated as a prototype model of modified gravity theories with quantum corrections. By using the auxiliary field method, the model is described by the general relativity with a scalaron field. The scalaron field can be identified as an inflaton at the primordial inflation era. It is also one of the dark matter candidates in the dark energy era. It is found that a wide range of the parameters is consistent with the current observations of CMB fluctuations, dark energy and dark matter.
We consider the gravitational effect of quantum wave packets when quantum mechanics, gravity, and thermodynamics are simultaneously considered. Under the assumption of a thermodynamic origin of gravity, we propose a general equation to describe the gravitational effect of quantum wave packets. In the classical limit, this equation agrees with Newton's law of gravitation. For quantum wave packets, however, it predicts a repulsive gravitational effect. We propose an experimental scheme using superfluid helium to test this repulsive gravitational effect. Our studies show that, with present techno…
This note presents a simple argument showing that dark matter is an effect of $f(R)$ gravity based on the definition of slightly modified gravitational theories previously proposed by the author.
In this work, we investigate the dynamics of the interacting dark energy and dark matter in viable models of $f(R)$ gravity by using a standard framework of dynamical system analysis. A simple form of the interacting dark energy $Q=3αHρ_{m}$ is used to study three viable models of $f(R)$ gravity which are consistent with local gravity constraints and satisfying conditions for the cosmological viability. As a result, we find that the fixed points are slightly modified from those obtained in the standard non-interacting analysis of $f(R)$ gravity proposed so far in the literature. In our models …
As previously observed the massless limit of massive gravity leads to a modification of general relativity. Here we study spherically symmetric solutions of the modified field equations which contain normal matter together with a dark energy density. If the dark density profile is assumed to be known, the whole problem is reduced to a linear first order differential equation which can be solved by quadratures.

We develop a non-perturbative formalism for scalar metric fluctuations from a 5D extended version of general relativity in vacuum. In this work we concentrate our efforts on calculations valid on large cosmological scales, which are the dominant during the inflationary phase of the universe. The resulting metric in this limit is obtained after implementing a planar coordinate transformation on a 5D Ricci-flat metric solution. We calculate the spectrum of these fluctuations with an effective 4D Schwarzschild-de Sitter spacetime on cosmological scales, which is obtained after we make a static fo…
The generalized hybrid metric-Palatini theory of gravity admits a scalar-tensor representation in terms of two interacting scalar fields. We show that, upon an appropriate choice of the interaction potential, one of the scalar fields behaves like dark energy, inducing a late-time accelerated expansion of the universe, while the other scalar field behaves like pressureless dark matter that, together with ordinary baryonic matter, dominates the intermediate phases of cosmic evolution. This unified description of dark energy and dark matter gives rise to viable cosmological solutions, which repro…
In this paper we study cosmological application of new agegraphic dark energy density in the $f(R)$ gravity framework. We employ the new agegraphic model of dark energy to obtain the equation of state for the new agegraphic energy density in spatially flat universe. Our calculation show, taking $n<0$, it is possible to have $w_{\rm Λ}$ crossing -1. This implies that one can generate phantom-like equation of state from a new agegraphic dark energy model in flat universe in the modified gravity cosmology framework. Also we develop a reconstruction scheme for the modified gravity with $f(R)$ acti…
The $f(R)$ gravity theory is considered. It is a gravitational theory that generalizes the Einstein-Hilbert action. In this context, a holographic dark energy model is studied. Tsallis non-extensive entropy is used to introduce the dark energy density based on the holographic principle. Then the Friedmann equation, deceleration parameter, and equation of state for this model are investigated.
In this paper, we attempt to resolve the dark matter problem in f(T) gravity. Specifically, from our model we successfully obtain the flat rotation curves of galaxies containing dark matter. Further, we obtain the density profile of dark matter in galaxies. Comparison of our analytical results shows that our torsion-based toy model for dark matter is in good agreement with empirical data-based models. It shows that we can address the dark matter as an effect of torsion of the space.
Recently, the static spherically symmetric solution of the gravitational field equations have been found in theories describing massive graviton with spontaneous breaking of the Lorentz invariance. These solutions, which show off two integration constants instead of one in General Relativity, are discussed. They are candidates for modified black holes provided they are stable against small perturbations. These solutions may have both attractive or repulsive behavior at large distances. Therefore, these modified black holes may mimics the presence of dark matter or be a source of anti-gravity.
This paper studies the effects of charge on a peculiar stellar object, recognized as gravastar, under the influence of $f(R,T)$ gravity by considering the conjecture of Mazur and Mottola in general relativity. The gravastar is also known as an alternative to a black hole and is expressed by three distinct domains named as (i) the interior domain, (ii) the intermediate shell and (iii) the exterior domain. We analyze these domains for a specific $f(R,T)$ gravity model conceding the conformal Killing vectors. In the interior domain, we assume that pressure is equal to negative energy density whic…
We focus on the analysis of three inequivalent equations of state of geometric dark energy in $f(R)$ cosmology that have been considered in the past and discuss their differences, advantages and drawbacks.
Recently one of us derived the action of modified gravity consistent with the holographic and new-agegraphic dark energy. In this paper, we investigate the stability of the Lagrangians of the modified gravity as discussed in [M. R. Setare, Int. J. Mod. Phys. D 17 (2008) 2219; M. R. Setare, Astrophys. Space Sci. 326 (2010) 27]. We also calculate the statefinder parameters which classify our dark energy model.
We derive a particular approximate solution of Einstein equations, describing the gravitational field of a mass distribution that slightly deviates from spherical symmetry. The deviation is described by means of a quadrupole parameter that is responsible for the appearance of a curvature singularity, which is not covered by a horizon. We investigate the motion of test particles in the gravitational field of this naked singularity and show that the quadrupole parameter affects the properties of Schwarzschild trajectories. By investigating radial geodesics, we find that no effects of repulsive g…
In the paper, we apply the weak gravity conjecture to the holographic quintessence model of dark energy. Three different holographic dark energy models are considered: without the interaction in the non-flat universe; with interaction in the flat universe; with interaction in the non-flat universe. We find that only in the models with the spatial curvature and interaction term proportional to the energy density of matter, it is possible for the weak gravity conjecture to be satisfied.
In this note we address the well-known cosmic coincidence problem in the framework of the \textit{f(R,T)} gravity. In order to achieve this, an interaction between dark energy and dark matter is considered. A constraint equation is obtained which filters the \textit{f(R,T)} models that produce a stationary scenario between dark energy and dark matter. Due to the absence of a universally accepted interaction term introduced by a fundamental theory, the study is conducted over three different forms of chosen interaction terms. As an illustration three widely known models of \textit{f(R,T)} gravi…
It is still a challenging problem to the theoretical physicists to know the exact nature of the galactic dark matter which causes the galactic rotational velocity to be more or less a constant. We have proposed that the dark matter as an effect of f(T) gravity. Assuming the flat rotation curves as input we have shown that f(T) gravity can explain galactic dynamics. Here, we don' have to introduce dark matter. Spacetime metric inspired by f(T) gravity describes the region up to which the tangential velocity of the test particle is constant. This inherent property appears to be enough to produce…
In this paper, we present a model for the late-time evolution of the universe where a dark energy-dark matter interaction is invoked. Dark energy is modeled through an holographic Ricci dark energy component. The model is embedded within an induced gravity brane-world model. For suitable choices of the interaction coupling, the big rip and little rip induced by the holographic Ricci dark energy, in a relativistic model and in an induced gravity brane-world model, are removed. In this scenario, the holographic dark energy will have a phantom-like behaviour even though the brane is asymptoticall…
Quadratic theory of gravity is a complicated constraint system. We investigate some consequences of treating quadratic terms perturbatively (higher derivative version of backreaction effects). This approach is shown to overcome some well known problems associated with higher derivative theories, i.e., the physical gravitational degree of freedom remains unchanged from those of Einstein gravity. Using such an interpretation of $R + βR^2$ gravity, we investigate a classical and Wheeler DeWitt evolution of $R + βR^2$ gravity for a particular sign of $β$, corresponding to non- tachyon case. Matter…
The gravitational behavior of antimatter is still unknown. While we may be confident that antimatter is self-attractive, the interaction between matter and antimatter might be either attractive or repulsive. We investigate this issue on theoretical grounds. Starting from the CPT invariance of physical laws, we transform matter into antimatter in the equations of both electrodynamics and gravitation. In the former case, the result is the well-known change of sign of the electric charge. In the latter, we find that the gravitational interaction between matter and antimatter is a mutual repulsion…
As an alternative to the LCDM concordance model, Scalar-Tensor-Vector Modified Gravity (MOG) theory reproduces key cosmological observations without postulating the presence of an exotic dark matter component. MOG is a field theory based on an action principle, with a variable gravitational constant and a repulsive vector field with variable range. MOG yields a phenomenological acceleration law that includes strong tensorial gravity partially canceled by a repulsive massive vector force. This acceleration law can be used to model the CMB acoustic spectrum and the matter power spectrum yielding…
We discuss the relevance of quantum gravity to the frontier questions in high energy phenomenology: the problems of dark matter, dark energy, and vacuum selection as well as the problems of emergent spacetime and wormholes. Dark matter and dark energy phenomenology, and the problem of vacuum selection are discussed within the context of string theory as a model of quantum gravity. Emergent spacetime and wormholes are discussed in a more general context of effective theories of quantum gravity.
Metric $f(R)$ gravity theories behave like GR with cosmological constant when $f"(R)$ = 0, and like scalar-tensor theories elsewhere. I investigate the transition from $f"(R) \neq 0$ to $f"(R) = 0$, and show that this theory may offer a way to explain Dark Energy and/or Dark Matter without having to make use of the chameleon mechanism to agree with solar system tests.
Recently Aadne and Grøn have argued that dark energy may follow naturally from a Nash theory of gravity. In this brief note I argue why this cannot be the case.
