We propose a scheme for encoding many qubits in a single rotor, that is, a continuous and periodic degree of freedom. A key feature of this scheme is its ability to manipulate and entangle the encoded qubits with a single operation on the system. We also show, using quantum error-correcting codes, how to protect the qubits against small errors in angular position and momentum which may affect the rotor. We then discuss the feasibility of this scheme and suggest several candidates for its implementation. The proposed scheme is immediately generalizable to qudits of any finite dimension.

Error Analysis For Encoding A Qubit In An Oscillator
在题为“Encoding A Qubit In An Oscillator”的论文中,Gottesman,Kitaev和Preskill [quant-ph/0008040]描述了一种在振荡器的位置和动量变量的连续希尔伯特空间中编码量子位的方法。
Practical quantum computing requires robust encoding of logical qubits in physical systems to protect fragile quantum information. Currently, the lack of scalability limits the logical encoding in most physical systems, and thus the high scalability of propagating light can be a game changer for realizing a practical quantum computer. However, propagating light also has a drawback: the difficulty of logical encoding due to weak nonlinearity. Here, we propose Gaussian breeding that encodes arbitrary Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill (GKP) qubits in propagating light. The key idea is the efficient and i…
We provide a theoretical framework for encoding arbitrary logical states of a quantum bit (qubit) into a continuous-variable quantum mode through quantum walks. Starting with a squeezed-vacuum state of the quantum mode, we show that quantum walks of the state in phase space can generate output states that are variants of codeword states originally put forward by Gottesman, Kitaev, and Preskill (GKP) [Phys. Rev. A {\bf 64}, 012310 (2001)]. In particular, with a coin-toss transformation that projects the quantum coin onto the diagonal coin-state, we show that the resulting {\em dissipative} quan…
In recent work [arXiv:2003.06939v2] a novel fermion to qubit mapping -- called the compact encoding -- was introduced which outperforms all previous local mappings in both the qubit to mode ratio, and the locality of mapped operators. There the encoding was demonstrated for square and hexagonal lattices. Here we present an extension of that work by illustrating how to apply the compact encoding to other regular lattices. We give constructions for variants of the compact encoding on all regular tilings with maximum degree 4. These constructions yield edge operators with Pauli weight at most 3 a…
Today's most widely used method of encoding quantum information in optical qubits is the dual-rail basis, often carried out through the polarisation of a single photon. On the other hand, many stationary carriers of quantum information - such as atoms - couple to light via the single-rail encoding in which the qubit is encoded in the number of photons. As such, interconversion between the two encodings is paramount in order to achieve cohesive quantum networks. In this paper, we demonstrate this by generating an entangled resource between the two encodings and using it to teleport a dual-rail …

All-optical generation of states for "Encoding a qubit in an oscillator"
离散和连续系统都可以用来编码量子信息。大多数量子计算方案提出在二能级系统中编码量子比特,例如二能级原子或电子自旋。另一些则利用无限维系统,如谐振子。在“Encoding a qubit in an oscillator”[Phys. Rev.

Encoding logical quantum information in harmonic oscillator modes is a promising and hardware-efficient approach to the realization of a quantum computer. In this work, we propose to encode logical qubits in grid states of an ensemble of harmonic oscillator modes. We first discuss general results about these multimode bosonic codes; how to design them, how to practically implement them in different experimental platforms and how lattice symmetries can be leveraged to perform logical non-Clifford operations. We then introduce in detail two two-mode grid codes based on the hypercubic and D4 latt…

Quantum resource theories are a powerful framework to characterize and quantify relevant quantum phenomena and identify processes that optimize their use for different tasks. Here, we define a resource measure for magic, the sought-after property in most fault-tolerant quantum computers. In contrast to previous literature, our formulation is based on bosonic codes, well-studied tools in continuous-variable quantum computation. Particularly, we use the Gottesman-Kitaev-Preskill code to represent multi-qubit states and consider the resource theory for the Wigner negativity. Our techniques are us…
