We show how to perform error correction of single qubit dephasing by encoding a single qubit into a minimum of three. This may be performed in a manner closely analogous to classical error correction schemes. Further, the resulting quantum error correction schemes are trivially generalized to the minimal encoding of arbitrarily many qubits so as to allow for multiqubit dephasing correction under the sole condition that the environment acts independently on each qubit.
We investigate the influence of dissipation and decoherence on quantum Darwinism by generalizing Zurek's original qubit model of decoherence and the establishment of pointer states (Zurek, Nature Physics 5, 181 - 188 (2009)). Our model allows for repeated multiple qubit-qubit couplings between system and environment which are described by randomly applied two-qubit quantum operations inducing entanglement, dissipation and dephasing. The resulting stationary qubit states of system and environment are investigated. They exhibit the intricate influence of entanglement generation, dissipation and …
We propose a scheme for the detection of qubit-environment entanglement at time $τ$ which requires only operations and measurements on the qubit, all within reach of current experimental state-of-the-art. The scheme works for any type of interaction which leads to pure dephasing of the qubit as long as the initial qubit state is pure. It becomes particularly simple when one of the qubit states is neutral with respect to the environment, such as in case of the most common choice of the NV center spin qubit or for excitonic charge qubits, when the environment is initially at thermal equilibrium.
The dynamics of a charged two-qubit system prepared initially in a maximum entangled state is discussed, where each qubit interacts independently with a dephasing channel. The Fisher information is used to estimate the channel and the energy parameters. Moreover, the contribution from different parts of Fisher information is discussed. We show that, the degree of estimation of any parameter depends on the initial value of this parameter. It turns out that the upper bounds of Fisher information with respect to the dephasing parameter increase and that corresponding to coupling parameter decreas…
We investigate the scheme for controlling information characterized by Von-Neumann entropy and the stationary state entanglement characterized by concurrence of two solid state qubits in the collective dephasing channel. It is shown that the local maximal value of the stationary state concurrence always corresponds to the local minimal value of information. We also propose a scheme for remotely controlling the entanglement of two solid state qubits against the collective dephasing. This idea may open a door to remotely suppress the detrimental effects of decoherence.
We address the dephasing dynamics of a qubit as an effective process to estimate the temperature of its environment. Our scheme is inherently quantum, since it exploits the sensitivity of the qubit to decoherence, and does not require thermalization with the system under investigation. We optimize the quantum Fisher information with respect to the interaction time and the temperature in the case of Ohmic-like environments. We also find explicitly the qubit measurement achieving the quantum Cramer- Rao bound to precision. Our results show that the conditions for optimal estimation originate fro…
We investigate the dynamics of quantum discord and entanglement for a class of mixed qubit-qutrit states assuming that only the qutrit is under the action of a dephasing channel. We demonstrate that even though the entanglement in the qubit-qutrit state disappears in a finite time interval, partial coherence left in the system enables quantum discord to remain invariant throughout the whole time evolution.
We address the dynamics of a qubit interacting with a quasi static random classical field having both a longitudinal and a transverse component and described by a Gaussian stochastic process. In particular, we analyze in details the conditions under which the dynamics may be effectively approximated by a unitary operation or a pure dephasing without relaxation.
A central task towards building a practical quantum computer is to protect individual qubits from decoherence while retaining the ability to perform high-fidelity entangling gates involving arbitrary two qubits. Here we propose and demonstrate a dephasing-insensitive procedure for storing and processing quantum information in an all-to-all connected superconducting circuit involving multiple frequency-tunable qubits, each of which can be controllably coupled to any other through a central bus resonator. Although it is generally believed that the extra frequency tunability enhances the control …
The longitudinal coupling of a system to the bath usually induces the pure dephasing of the system. In this paper, we study the collective dephasing induced dissipation and decoherence in a coupled-qubit system with a common bath. It is shown that, compared with the case of the same system with independent baths, the interference between the dephasing processes of different qubits induced by the common bath significantly changes the dissipation of the system. For the system of two coupled qubits, the interference leads to a faster decoherence in the non-single-excitation subspaces and a slower…
The Markovian dynamics of a qubit is investigated in the scheme of random unitary dynamics, where Kraus operators are changed by an extra noise. The behavior of Markovianity is explored in the perturbed scenario. We provide a new algorithm for checking CP-divisibility (Markovianity) of a dynamical map.
We demonstrate the suppression of photon shot noise dephasing in a superconducting qubit by eliminating its dispersive coupling to the readout cavity. This is achieved in a tunable coupling qubit, where the qubit frequency and coupling rate can be controlled independently. We observe that the coherence time approaches twice the relaxation time and becomes less sensitive to thermal photon noise when the dispersive coupling rate is tuned from several MHz to 22 kHz. This work provides a promising building block in circuit quantum electrodynamics that can hold high coherence and be integrated into…
Although the Gaussian-noise assumption is widely adopted in the study of qubit decoherence, non-Gaussian noise sources, especially the strong discrete fluctuators, have been detected in many qubits. It remains an important task to further understand and mitigate the distinctive decoherence effect of the non-Gaussian noise. Here, we study the qubit dephasing caused by the non-Gaussian fluctuators, and predict a symmetry-breaking effect that is unique to the non-Gaussian noise. This broken symmetry results in an experimentally measurable mismatch between the extremum points of the dephasing rate…
We propose a straightforward experimental protocol to test whether qubit-environment entanglement is generated during pure dephasing of a qubit. The protocol is implemented using only measurements and operations on the qubit - it does not involve the measurement of the system-environment state of interest, but the preparation and measurement of the qubit in two simple variations. A difference in the time dependencies of qubit coherence between the two cases testifies to the presence of entanglement in the state of interest. Furthermore, it signifies that the environment-induced noise experienc…
We study the dynamics of geometric measure of quantum discord (GMQD) under the influences of two local phase damping noises. Consider the two qubits initially in arbitrary X-states, we find the necessary and sufficient conditions for which GMQD is unaffected for a finite period. It is further shown that such results also hold for the non-Markovian dephasing process.
We consider whether quantum coherence in the form of mutual entanglement between a pair of qubits is susceptible to decay that may be more rapid than the decay of the coherence of either qubit individually. An instance of potential importance for solid state quantum computing arises if embedded qubits (spins, quantum dots, Cooper pair boxes, etc.) are exposed to global and local noise at the same time. Here we allow separate phase-noisy channels to affect local and non-local measures of system coherence. We find that the time for decay of the qubit entanglement can be significantly shorter tha…
One of the major challenges in quantum computation has been to preserve the coherence of a quantum system against dephasing effects of the environment. The information stored in photon polarization, for example, is quickly lost due to such dephasing, and it is crucial to preserve the input states when one tries to transmit quantum information encoded in the photons through a communication channel. We propose a dynamical decoupling sequence to protect photonic qubits from dephasing by integrating wave plates into optical fiber at prescribed locations. We simulate random birefringent noise along…
We study the dephasing of a single qubit coupled to a bosonic bath. In particular, we investigate the case when the bath is initially prepared in a pure state known as the Schrödinger cat. In clear contradistinction to the time-evolution of an initial coherent state, the time evolutions of the purity and the coherence factor now depend on the particular choice of the Schrödinger cat state. We also demonstrate that the evolution of the entanglement of a two--qubit system depends on the initial conditions in a similar way.
We study the interplay between coherence trapping, information back-flow and the form of the reservoir spectral density for dephasing qubits. We show that stationary coherence is maximized when the qubit undergoes non-Markovian dynamics, and we elucidate the different roles played by the low and high frequency parts of the environmental spectrum. We show that the low frequencies fully determine the presence or absence of information back-flow while the high frequencies dictate the maximal amount of coherence trapping.
We propose a qubit-environment entanglement measure which is tailored for evolutions that lead to pure dephasing of the qubit, such as are abundant in solid state scenarios. The measure can be calculated directly form the density matrix without minimization of any kind. In fact it does not require the knowledge of the full density matrix, and it is enough to know the initial qubit state and the states of the environment conditional on qubit pointer states. This yields a computational advantage over standard entanglement measures, which becomes large when there are no correlations between envir…
We study the performance of two measures of non-Markovianity in detecting memory effects in two-qubit dephasing channels. By combining independent Markovian and non-Markovian noise on the qubits, our results show that the trace distance measure is able to detect the memory effects when at least one of the local channels displays non-Markovianity. A measure based on channel capacity, in turn, becomes non-zero when the global two-qubit dynamics shows memory effects. We apply these schemes to a well-known superdense coding protocol and demonstrate an optimal noise configuration to maximize the in…
We present a procedure for direct characterization of the dephasing noise acting on a single qubit by making repeated measurements of the qubit coherence under suitably chosen sequences of controls. We show that this allows a numerical reconstruction of the short time noise correlation function and that it can be combined with a series of measurements under free evolution to allow a characterization of the noise correlation function over many orders of magnitude range in timescale. We also make an analysis of the robustness and reliability of the estimated correlation functions. Application to…
We address the experimentally relevant problem of robust mitigation of dephasing noise acting on a qubit. We first present an extension of a method for representing $1/ω^α$ noise developed by Kuopanportti et al. to the efficient representation of arbitrary Markovian noise. We then add qubit control pulses to enable the design of numerically optimized, two-dimensional control functions with bounded amplitude, that are capable of decoupling the qubit from the dephasing effects of a broad variety of Markovian noise spectral densities during arbitrary one qubit quantum operations. We illustrate th…
We consider a class of multi-qubit dephasing models that combine classical noise sources and linear coupling to a bosonic environment, and are controlled by arbitrary sequences of dynamical decoupling pulses. Building on a general transfer filter-function framework for open-loop control, we provide an exact representation of the controlled dynamics for arbitrary stationary non-Gaussian classical and quantum noise statistics, with analytical expressions emerging when all dephasing sources are Gaussian. This exact characterization is used to establish two main results. First, we construct multi-…
We introduce open-loop quantum control protocols for characterizing the spectral properties of non-Gaussian noise, applicable to both classical and quantum dephasing environments. The basic idea is to engineer a multi-dimensional frequency comb via repetition of suitably designed pulse sequences, through which the desired high-order noise spectra may be related to observable properties of the qubit probe. We prove that access to a high time resolution is key to achieve spectral reconstruction over an extended bandwidth, overcoming limitations of existing schemes. Non-Gaussian spectroscopy is d…
Bosonic qubits encoded in continuous-variable systems provide a promising alternative to two-level qubits for quantum computation and communication. So far, photon loss has been the dominant source of errors in bosonic qubits, but the significant reduction of photon loss in recent bosonic qubit experiments suggests that dephasing errors should also be considered. However, a detailed understanding of the combined photon loss and dephasing channel is lacking. Here, we show that, unlike its constituent parts, the combined loss-dephasing channel is non-degradable, pointing towards a richer structu…
We study dephasing of a superconducting qubit due to quasiparticle tunneling through a Josephson junction. While qubit decay due to tunneling processes is well understood within a golden rule approximation, pure dephasing due to BCS quasiparticles gives rise to a divergent golden rule rate. We calculate qubit dephasing due to quasiparticle tunneling beyond lowest order approximation in coupling between qubit and quasiparticles. Summing up a certain class of diagrams we show that qubit dephasing due to purely longitudinal coupling to quasiparticles leads to a dephasing $\sim \exp(-x(t))$ where …
We proposed an analytical model to analyze the Landau-Zener interference in a multilevel superconducting flux qubit driven by large amplitude external fields. Our analytical results agree remarkably with those of the experiment [Nature 455, 51 (2008)]. Moreover, we studied the effect of driving-frequency and dephasing rate on the interference. The dephasing generally destroys the interference while increasing frequency rebuilds the interference at large dephasing rate. At certain driving frequency and dephasing rate, the interference shows some anomalous features as observed in recent experime…
Most studies of collective dephasing for bipartite as well as multipartite quantum systems focus on a very specific orientation of magnetic field, that is, z-orientation. However, in practical situations, there are always small fluctuations in stochastic field and it is necessary that more general orientations of fields should be considered. We extend this problem to qubit-qutrit systems and study correlation dynamics for entanglement and local quantum uncertainty for some specific quantum states. We find that certain quantum states exhibit freezing dynamics both for entanglement and local qua…
The quantum correlations, including entanglement and discord with its geometric measure, and classical correlation are studied for a bipartite partition of a open or closed quantum system. It is found that the purity of the initial state plays an important role in the dynamics of quantum and classical correlations. In the dephasing model, the quantum correlations loss and the classical correlation gain are instantaneously happen. While, the purity of the initial state destroys the quantum correlations which is resulted by the unitary interaction. Therefore, with the purity parameter, a particu…
For many implementations of quantum computing, 1/f and other types of broad-spectrum noise are an important source of decoherence. An important step forward would be the ability to back out the characteristics of this noise from qubit measurements and to see if it leads to new physical effects. For certain types of qubits, the working point of the qubit can be varied. Using a new mathematical method that is suited to treat all working points, we present theoretical results that show how this degree of freedom can be used to extract noise parameters and to predict a new effect: noise-induced lo…
We revisit qubit-qutrit quantum systems under collective dephasing and answer some of the questions which have not been asked and addressed so far in the literature. In particular, we examine the possibilities of non-trivial phenomena of {\it time-invariant} entanglement and {\it freezing} dynamics of entanglement for this dimension of Hilbert space. Interestingly, we find that for qubit-qutrit systems both of these peculiar features coexist, that is, we observe not only time-invariant entanglement for certain quantum states but we find also find evidence that many quantum states freeze their …
We study the time evolution of classical and quantum correlations for hybrid qubit-qutrit systems in independent and common classical dephasing environments. Our discussion involves a comparative analysis of the Markovian dynamics of negativity, quantum discord, geometric measure of quantum discord and classical correlation. For the case of independent environments, we have demonstrated the phenomenon of sudden transition between classical and quantum decoherence for qubit-qutrit states. In the common environment case, we have shown that dynamics of quantum and geometric discords might be comp…
Based on the exact dynamics of a two-qubit system and environment, we investigate system-environment (SE) quantum and classical correlations. The coupling is chosen to represent a dephasing channel for one of the qubits and the environment is a proper thermal bath. First we discuss the general issue of dilation for qubit phase damping. Based on the usual thermal bath of harmonic oscillators, we derive criteria of separability and entanglement between an initial $X$ state and the environment. Applying these criteria to initial Werner states, we find that entanglement between the system and envi…
We study the entanglement dynamics for a two-spin system coupled to a spin environment of different configurations by z-x type interaction. The models considered in this paper are solved both analytically and numerically giving rise to some concise analytical expressions when certain approximations are properly made. Our purpose is to find how the initial states of the environment with different numbers of spins affect the decay or revival of the entanglement between central qubits. In Particular, it is found that the block-entangled environment could speed up the decay and revival of the qubi…
We study entanglement generated between a charge qubit and a bosonic bath due to their joint evolution which leads to pure dephasing of the qubit. We tune the parameters of the interaction, so that the decoherence is quantitatively independent of the number of bosonic modes taken into account and investigate, how the entanglement generated depends on the size of the environment. A second parameter of interest is the mixedness of the initial state of the environment which is controlled by temperature. We show analytically that for a pure initial state of the environment, entanglement does not d…
We present a general and exact formalism for finding the evolution of a quantum system subject to external telegraph noise. The various qubit decoherence rates are determined by the eigenvalues of a transfer matrix. The formalism can be applied to a qubit subject to an arbitrary combination of dephasing and relaxational telegraph noise, in contrast to existing non-perturbative methods that treat only one or the other of these limits. We present 3 applications: 1) We obtain the full qubit dynamics on time scales short compared with the enviromental correlation times. In the strong coupling case…
We suggest and demonstrate a protocol which suppresses dephasing due to the low-frequency noise by qubit motion, i.e., transfer of the logical qubit of information in a system of $n \geq 2$ physical qubits. The protocol requires only the nearest-neighbor coupling and is applicable to different qubit structures. We further analyze its effectiveness against noises with arbitrary correlations. Our analysis, together with experiments using up to three superconducting qubits, shows that for the realistic uncorrelated noises, qubit motion increases the dephasing time of the logical qubit as $\sqrt{n…
We find that when a qubit initialized in a pure state experiences pure dephasing due to interaction with an environment, separable qubit-environment states generated during the evolution also have zero quantum discord with respect to the environment. What follows is that the set of separable states which can be reached during the evolution has zero volume and hence, such effects as sudden death of qubit-environment entanglement are very unlikely. In case of the discord with respect to the qubit, a vast majority of separable states qubit-environment is discordant, but in specific situations zer…
A spin qubit in semiconductor quantum dots holds promise for quantum information processing for scalability and long coherence time. An important semiconductor qubit system is a double quantum dot trapping two electrons or holes, whose spin states encode either a singlet-triplet qubit or two single-spin qubits coupled by exchange interaction. In this article, we report progress on spin dephasing of two exchange-coupled spins in a double quantum dot. We first discuss the schemes of two-qubit gates and qubit encodings in gate-defined quantum dots or donor atoms based on the exchange interaction.…
A theory of dynamical control by modulation for optimal decoherence reduction is developed. It is based on the non-Markovian Euler-Lagrange equation for the energy-constrained field that minimizes the average dephasing rate of a qubit for any given dephasing spectrum.
We theoretically study the measurement-induced dephasing caused by back action noise in quantum nondemolition measurements of a superconducting flux qubit which is coupled to a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). Our analytical results indicate that information on qubit flows from qubit to detector, while quantum fluctuations which may cause dephasing of the qubit also inject to qubit. Furthermore, the measurement probability is frequency dependent in a short time scale and has a close relationship with the measurement-induced dephasing. When the detuning between driven and ba…
A quantum system interacting with its environment is subject to dephasing which ultimately destroys the information it holds. Using a superconducting qubit, we experimentally show that this dephasing has both dynamic and geometric origins. It is found that geometric dephasing, which is present even in the adiabatic limit and when no geometric phase is acquired, can either reduce or restore coherence depending on the orientation of the path the qubit traces out in its projective Hilbert space. It accompanies the evolution of any system in Hilbert space subjected to noise.
Quantum bits based on Majorana zero modes are expected to be robust against certain noise types, and hence provide a quantum computing platform that is superior to conventional qubits. This robustness is not complete though: imperfections can still lead to qubit decoherence and hence to information loss. In this work, we theoretically study Majorana-qubit dephasing in a minimal model: in a Kitaev chain with quasistatic disorder. Our approach, based on numerics as well as first-order non-degenerate perturbation theory, provides a conceptually simple physical picture and predicts Gaussian dephas…
Decoherence remains a major challenge in quantum computing hardware and a variety of physical-layer controls provide opportunities to mitigate the impact of this phenomenon through feedback and feedforward control. In this work, we compare a variety of machine learning algorithms derived from diverse fields for the task of state estimation (retrodiction) and forward prediction of future qubit state evolution for a single qubit subject to classical, non-Markovian dephasing. Our approaches involve the construction of a dynamical model capturing qubit dynamics via autoregressive or Fourier-type p…
Using micromagnets to enable electron spin manipulation in silicon qubits has emerged as a very popular method, enabling single-qubit gate fidelities larger than 99:9%. However, these micromagnets also apply stray magnetic field gradients onto the qubits, making the spin states susceptible to electric field noise and limiting their coherence times. We describe here a magnet design that minimizes qubit dephasing, while allowing for fast qubit control and addressability. Specifically, we design and optimize magnet dimensions and position relative to the quantum dots, minimizing dephasing from ma…
We investigate the measurement-induced dephasing of a qubit coupled with a single-mode cavity in the vacuum limit. Dephasing of the qubit state takes place through the ntanglement of the qubit and the single probe photon sent to the cavity, while the cavity mode never occupies a photon. We find that the qubit state is dephased even if the cavity is always in the vacuum state. This dephasing is caused purely by the interaction between the qubit and the vacuum field. We also show that this vacuum-fluctuation-induced dephasing takes place much faster than the spontaneous decay of the qubit excite…
Creation of entangled states of quantum systems with low decoherence rates is a cornerstone in practical implementation of quantum computations. Processes of separate dephasing in each qubit in experimentally feasible systems is commonly accepted to destroy entanglement. In this work, we consider a system of two strongly coupled qubits that interact with dephasing reservoirs. We demonstrate that interaction with dephasing reservoirs can contribute to the formation of a long-lived mixed entangled state with nonzero concurrence. The weight of the subradiant state in this mixed state tends toward…
We present a tradeoff between leakage and pure dephasing errors for the fluxonium circuit. We show that in the insulating regime, i.e., when the persistent current flowing across the circuit is suppressed, the pure dephasing rate decreases exponentially as the impedance of the circuit is increased. In contrast to this exponential decrease, the qubit remains sufficiently anharmonic so that gates times can still be short, allowing for significant reduction in the computational error rates.
The fragility of quantum systems makes them ideally suited for sensing applications at the nanoscale. However, interpreting the output signal of a qubit-based sensor is generally complicated by background clutter due to out-of-band spectral leakage, as well as ambiguity in signal origin when the sensor is operated with noisy hardware. We present a sensing protocol based on optimally band-limited "Slepian functions" that can overcome these challenges, by providing narrowband sensing of ambient dephasing noise, coupling additively to the sensor along the ${z}$-axis, while permitting isolation of…
Exchange coupled {\it spin} qubits in semiconductor nanostructures are shown to be vulnerable to dephasing caused by {\it charge noise} invariably present in the semiconductor environment. This decoherence of exchange gate by environmental charge fluctuations arises from the fundamental Coulombic nature of the Heisenberg coupling, and presents a serious challenge to the scalability of the widely studied exchange gate solid state spin quantum computer architectures. We estimate dephasing times for coupled spin qubits in a wide range (from 1 ns up to $> 1 μ$s) depending on the exchange coupling …
We study a flux qubit, made of a superconducting loop interrupted by three Josephson junctions, which is subject to a temperature gradient. We show that the heat current induced by the temperature gradient, being sensitive to the superconducting phase differences at the junctions, depends significantly on the state of the qubit. We furthermore investigate the impact of the heat current on the coherence properties of the qubit state. We have found that even small temperature gradients can lead to dephasing times of the order of microseconds for the Delft-qubit design.
We calculate the pure dephasing time of three-electron exchange-only qubits due to interaction with the nuclear hyperfine field. Within the $S=S_z=1/2$ spin subspace, we derive formulas for the dephasing time in the $(1,1,1)$ charge region and in the neighboring charge sectors coupled by tunneling. The nuclear field and the tunneling are taken into account in a second order approximation. The analytical solutions accurately reproduce the numerical evaluation of the full problem, and in comparison with existing experimental data, we find that the dephasing times are longer but on the same times…
The entanglement dynamics of an anisotropic two-qubit Heisenberg XYZ system in the presence of intrinsic decoherence is studied. The usefulness of such system for performance of the quantum teleportation protocol ${\cal T}_0$ and entanglement teleportation protocol ${\cal T}_1$ is also investigated. The results depend on the initial conditions and the parameters of the system. For the product and maximally entangled initial states, increasing the size of spin-orbit interaction parameter $D$ amplifies the effects of dephasing and hence decreases the asymptotic entanglement and fidelity of telep…
