We study the problem of a single Dirac fermion in a quantizing orbital magnetic field, when the chemical potential is at the Dirac point. This can be realized on the surface of a topological insulator, such as Bi2Se3, tuned to neutrality. We study the effect of both long range Coulomb interactions (strength alpha=e^2/(epsilon hbar v_F).) and local repulsion U which capture the effect of electron correlations. Interactions resolve the degeneracy of free fermions in the zeroth Landau level at half filling, but in a manner different from that in graphene. For weak interactions, U=0 and alpha<<1, a composite Fermi liquid is expected. However, in the limit of strong local correlations (large U but alpha<<1), a charge density wave phase is predicted, which we term "axion stripe". While reminiscent of quantum Hall stripe phases, its wavelength is parametrically larger than the magnetic length, and the induced fermion mass term (axion) also oscillates with the charge density. This phase is destroyed by sufficiently strong Zeeman coupling. A phase diagram is constructed and consequences for experiments are discussed.
We consider stripe formation in quantum Hall systems at integer filling factors. We use Hartree-Fock calculations to obtain the phase diagram of bilayer quantum Hall systems at $ν=4n+1$ in a tilted magnetic field. We derive and analyze an effective low energy theory for the stripe phases which may be present in such systems. We discuss the possibility of stripe formation in wide well systems in a tilted magnetic field and suggest that the resistance anisotropy, observed recently by W. Pan et.al. [phys. Rev. B 64 (2001) 121305], may be due to the existence of a skyrmion stripe phase.
We study fluctuations and topological melting transitions of quantum Hall stripes near half-filling of intermediate Landau levels. Taking the stripe state to be an anisotropic Wigner crystal (AWC) allows us to identify the quantum Hall nematic state conjectured in previous studies of the 2D electron gas as an {\em anisotropic hexatic}. The transition temperature from the AWC to the quantum Hall nematic state is explicitly calculated, and a tentative phase diagram for the 2D electron gas near half-filling is suggested.
We consider the two lowest Landau levels at half filling. In the higher Landau level (nu =5/2), we find a first order phase transition separating a compressible striped phase from a paired quantum Hall state, which is identified as the Moore-Read state. The critical point is very near the Coulomb potential and the transition can be driven by increasing the width of the electron layer. We find a much weaker transition (either second order or a crossover) from pairing to the composite fermion Fermi liquid behavior. A very similar picture is obtained for the lowest Landau level but the transition…
We propose that the transport anisotropy observed in half-filled high Landau levels ($N \geq 2$) is caused by the space noncommutativity effect, namely the Heisenberg uncertainty relation between the spatial coordinates of electrons. The stripe corresponds to a limit that one coordinate of a large number of particles is fixed at a certain value while its conjugate coordinate is completely uncertain. We make a renormalization group analysis and find that the noncommutativity effect is able to drive the stripe formation only at half-fillings $ν= 9/2, 11/2, 13/2,$ etc., in agreement with experime…
We use a fully self-consistent laterally resolved Hartree-Fock approximation for numerically addressing the electron configurations at higher Landau levels in the quantum Hall regime for near-macroscopic sample sizes. Our results give microscopic details of stripe- and bubble-like charge density modulations and show how these emerge depending on the filling factor. We find that there exists a region at the boundaries of the stripes and bubbles with a density modulation that corresponds to a filling factor around half filling. The microscopic details of these boundary regions determine the geom…
We have performed an exact diagonalization study of up to N=12 interacting electrons on a disk at filling $ν={1/3}$ for both Coulomb and $V_1$ short-range interaction for which Laughlin wave function is the exact solution. For Coulomb interaction and $N\geq 10$ we find persistent radial oscillations in electron density, which are not captured by the Laughlin wave function. Our results srongly suggest formation of a chiral edge striped phase in quantum Hall systems. The amplitude of the charge density oscillations decays slowly, perhaps as a square root of the distance from the edge; thus the s…
In a 2D electron system in (001) GaAs/AlGaAs upon filling high Landau levels, it was recently observed a new class of collective states, which are recognized now to relate to the spontaneous formation of a charge density wave (``stripe phase''). Here we analyze one of the possible mechanisms of the stripe pinning along the crystallographic direction [110]--the native effective mass anisotropy of 2D electrons. It is shown that for a symmetric quantum well this anisotropy is a linear function of applied perpendicular-to-plane electric field. So, if it is the anisotropy that defines the direction…
The quantum Hall effect is generally understood for free electron gases, in which topologically protected edge states between Landau levels (LLs) form conducting channels at the edge of the sample. In periodic crystals, the LLs are imprinted with lattice properties; plateaus in the transverse Hall conductivity are not equidistant in energy anymore. Herein, crystals with a polyatomic basis are considered. For a stripe arrangement of different atoms, the band structure resorts nontrivially and exhibits strong oscillations that form a salient pattern with very small bandgaps. The Hall conductivit…
A comprehensive study of magnetoresistance and Hall effect has been performed for the set of the single crystals of non-magnetic metal LuB12 with the Jahn-Teller instability of the boron cage and dynamic charge stripes forming along <110> direction. Anomalous positive contribution to Hall effect for particular direction of magnetic field H//[001] is found in the single crystals of LuB12 of the highest quality. This contribution arising at T~ 150 K is shown to increase drastically when approaching the disordered ground state below 60 K. The Hall effect anomaly is shown to appear in combination …
We supplement a previously published calculation of the Hall effect in stripe ordered cuprates by presenting results for the physically relevant sign of the potential arising from charge ordering. The new results are more consistent with data, underscoring the importance of charge ordering in cuprates.
The microscopic structure of a charge stripe in an antiferromagnetic insulator is studied within the t-Jz model using analytical and numerical approaches. We demonstrate that a stripe in an antiferromagnet should be viewed as a system of composite holon-spin-polaron excitations condensed at the self-induced antiphase domain wall (ADW) of the antiferromagnetic spins. The properties of such excitations are studied in detail with numerical and analytical results for various quantities being in very close agreement. A picture of the stripe as an effective one-dimensional (1D) band of such excitati…
A transport study of two-dimensional (2D) holes confined to wide GaAs quantum wells provides a glimpse of a subtle competition between different many-body phases at Landau level filling $ν=3/2$ in tilted magnetic fields. At large tilt angles ($θ$), an anisotropic, stripe (or nematic) phase replaces the isotropic compressible Fermi sea at $ν=3/2$ if the quantum well has a symmetric charge distribution. When the charge distribution is made asymmetric, instead of the stripe phase, an even-denominator fractional quantum state appears at $ν=3/2$ in a range of large $θ$, and reverts back to a compre…
The Hall constant R_H is considered for the stripe structures. In order to explain the vanishing of R_H in LNSCO at x = 1/8, we use the relation of R_H to the Drude weight D as well as direct numerical calculation, to obtain results within the t-J model, where the stripes are imposed via a charge potential and a staggered magnetic field. The origin of R_H ~ 0 is related to a maximum in D and the minimal kinetic energy in stripes with a hole filling ~ 1/2. The same argument indicates on a possibility of R_H ~ 0 in the whole range of static stripes for x < 1/8.
With the help of analytical and numerical studies of the $t$-$J_z$ model we argue that the charge stripe in an antiferromagnetic insulator should be understood as a system of holon-spin-polaron excitations condensed at the self-induced antiphase domain wall. The structure of such a charge excitation is studied in detail with numerical and analytical results for various quantities being in a very close agreement. An analytical picture of these excitations occupying an effective 1D stripe band is also in a very good accord with numerical data. The emerging concept advocates the primary role of t…
Mean-field calculations for the two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in a large magnetic field with a partially filled Landau level with index $N\geq 2$ consistently yield ``stripe-ordered'' charge-density wave ground-states, for much the same reason that frustrated phase separation leads to stripe ordered states in doped Mott insulators. We have studied the effects of quantum and thermal fluctuations about such a state and show that they can lead to a set of electronic liquid crystalline states, particularly a stripe-nematic phase which is stable at $T>0$. Recent measurements of the longitudin…
We study the phase diagram of $ν_e=7/3$ state in the $N=1$ Landau level in the presence of band mass anisotropy. Using density matrix renormalization group on an infinite cylinder geometry, we find a continuous transition from the topologically ordered Laughlin fractional quantum Hall state to a stripe phase with a period of approximately five and a half magnetic lengths. The transition is driven by the condensation of the magnetoroton mode which becomes gapless at the critical point. We interpret the transition within the composite-boson theory as the onset of stripe order in a superfluid bac…
We investigate the nature of the quantum Hall liquid in a half-filled second Landau level ($n=1$) as a function of band mass anisotropy using numerical exact diagonalization (ED) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods. We find increasing the mass anisotropy induces a quantum phase transition from the Moore-Read state to a charge density wave state. By analyzing the energy spectrum, guiding center structure factors and by adding weak pinning potentials, we show that this charge density wave is a uni-directional quantum Hall stripe, which has a periodicity of a few magnetic leng…
We investigate the effect of static anti-phase stripe order on the weak-field Hall effect of electrons on a two-dimensional square lattice with electron dispersion appropriate to the high T$_c$ cuprates. We first consider the cases where the magnitudes of the spin and charge stripe potentials are smaller than or of the same order as the bandwidth of the two-dimensional electrons, so that the electronic properties are not too strongly one-dimensional. In a model with only spin stripe potential, and at carrier concentrations appropriate to hole-doped cuprates, increasing the stripe scattering po…
Temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient, R_H_, has been investigated in charge-spin stripe-ordered La-214 high-T_c_ superconductors. Using the simplest stripe-ordered system of La_2-x_Ba_x_CuO_4_, it has been clarified that both the behavior of R_H_ and its sign exhibit significant dependences on the hole concentration. That is, R_H_ is zero in the ground state of the charge-spin stripe order at x=1/8, while it is negative in the less-stabilized state of the charge stripe for x<1/8. These are interpreted as owing to the delicate balance of the contributions of the hole-like Fermi surfac…
We argue that the naively expected singularities of the Fermi surface, in the mixed composite boson - composite fermion states proposed [S.H. Simon et al., PRL 91, 046803(2003)] for the evolution of ν= 1 bilayer quantum Hall system with distance, are obliterated. Our conclusion is based on a careful analysis of the momentum distribution in ν= 1/2 single-layer composite-fermion state. We point out to a possibility of the phenomenon hitherto unknown outside Kondo lattice systems when, in a translationally invariant system, Fermi-liquid-like portion of electrons enlarges its volume.
Spontaneous breaking of rotational symmetry and preferential orientation of stripe phases in the quantum Hall regime has attracted considerable experimental and theoretical effort over the last decade. We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically that the direction of high and low resistance of the two-dimensional (2D) hole gas in the quantum Hall regime can be controlled by an external strain. Depending on the sign of the in-plane shear strain, the Hartree-Fock energy of holes or electrons is minimized when the charge density wave (CDW) is oriented along [110] or [1-10] directions. We sugg…
We discuss the composite fermion pairing state in bilayer quantum Hall systems. After the evaluation of the range of the inter-layer separation in which the quantum Hall state is stabilized, we discuss the effect of inter-layer tunneling on the composite fermion pairing state at ν=1/2. We show that there is a cusp at the transition point between the Halperin (3,3,1) state and the Pfaffian state.
Mean-field theory predicts that bilayer quantum Hall systems at odd integer total filling factors can have stripe ground states in which the top Landau level is occupied alternately by electrons in one of the two layers. We report on an analysis of the properties of these states based on a coupled Luttinger liquid description that is able to account for quantum fluctuations of charge-density and position along each stripe edge. The soft modes associated with the broken symmetries of the stripe state lead to an unusual coupled Luttinger liquid system with strongly enhanced low-temperature heat …
We study a one-dimensional electron liquid embedded in a 2D antiferromagnetic insulator, and coupled to it via a weak antiferromagnetic spin exchange interaction. We argue that this model may qualitatively capture the physics of a single charge stripe in the cuprates on length- and time scales shorter than those set by its fluctuation dynamics. Using a local mean-field approach we identify the low-energy effective theory that describes the electronic spin sector of the stripe as that of a sine-Gordon model. We determine its phases via a perturbative renormalization group analysis. For realisti…
In recent experiments, external anisotropy has been a useful tool to tune different phases and study their competitions. In this paper, we look at the quantum Hall charge density wave states in the $N=2$ Landau level. Without anisotropy, there are two first-order phase transitions between the Wigner crystal, the $2$-electron bubble phase, and the stripe phase. By adding mass anisotropy, our analytical and numerical studies show that the $2$-electron bubble phase disappears and the stripe phase significantly enlarges its domain in the phase diagram. Meanwhile, a regime of stripe crystals that m…
We show that the entanglement spectrum associated with a certain class of strongly correlated many-body states --- the wave functions proposed by Laughlin and Jain to describe the fractional quantum Hall effect --- can be very well described in terms of a simple model of non-interacting (or weakly interacting) composite fermions.
Charged excitons of composite fermions (CFs) are considered in the fractional quantum Hall effect. Energies of the charged CF excitons are computed at $ν=1/3$ as a function of the size of exciton. We show that the charged CF exciton with size of roton is lower in energy than the unbound state of a neutral roton and a lone charge. Therefore we propose that the lowest-energy excitation of the fractional quantum Hall effect is in fact due to the charged excitons of composite fermions composed of two CF-particles and one CF-hole. We believe that charged excitons of composite fermions shed new ligh…
Composite fermion metal states emerge in quantum Hall bilayers at total Landau level filling factor $ν_T$=1 when the tunneling gap collapses by application of in-plane components of the external magnetic field. Evidence of this transformation is found in the continua of spin excitations observed by inelastic light scattering below the spin-wave mode at the Zeeman energy. The low-lying spin modes are interpreted as quasiparticle excitations with simultaneous changes in spin orientation and composite fermion Landau level index.
A recently developed model of interacting composite fermions, is used to investigate different composite-fermion phases. Their interaction potential allows for the formation of both solid and new quantum-liquid phases, which are interpreted in terms of second-generation composite fermions and which may be responsible for the fractional quantum Hall states observed at unusual filling factors, such as nu=4/11. Projection of the composite-fermion dynamics to a single level, involved in the derivation of the Hamiltonian of interacting composite fermions, reveals the underlying self-similarity of t…
In two-dimensional electron systems confined to GaAs quantum wells, as a function of either tilting the sample in magnetic field or increasing density, we observe multiple transitions of the fractional quantum Hall states (FQHSs) near filling factors $ν=3/4$ and 5/4. The data reveal that these are spin-polarization transitions of interacting two-flux composite Fermions, which form their own FQHSs at these fillings. The fact that the reentrant integer quantum Hall effect near $ν=4/5$ always develops following the transition to full spin polarization of the $ν=4/5$ FQHS strongly links the reentr…
The The composite fermion model (CF) of the quantum Hall effect which gives the correct series of charges is based on attachment of flux quanta to the electron. The construction of the series of charges leads to a field expression which requires that flux quanta are attached to the electron. The series based on the experimental data is correct but the field deduced from such a series is found to be incorrect. The attachment of even number of flux quanta to an electron required by the CF model is found to be internally inconsistent.
The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) is extensively studied, but the explanation for Hall plateau widths and excitation energy gaps remains elusive. We study the effective theory of FQHE built upon experimental inputs of Hall current distribution, edge dynamics, and many-body correlations. We argue that correlated composites of integer spin, comprising electrons and their images, localized at the edge of the incompressible strip are the basic transport entity. We show in the lowest Landau level that Zeeman interactions of these composites produce all odd denominator plateaus and effective…
We study a strongly interacting, fermionic fluid in the presence of an applied magnetic field using a holographic framework. At low temperatures, translation symmetry is spontaneously broken and the resulting phase is a striped Hall fluid. Due to the magnetic field, an electric field applied parallel to the stripes causes the stripes to slide, a phenomenon we coin "Hall sliding." We also investigate the magneto-transport of the system in the presence of an explicit translation symmetry-breaking lattice which pins the stripes. Electrical properties are well represented by a hydrodynamical model…
We review the recently proposed Dirac composite fermion theory of the half-filled Landau level. This paper is based on a talk given at the Nambu Symposium at University of Chicago, March 11-13, 2016.
We study the pairing symmetry of the interlayer paired state of composite fermions in quantum Hall bilayers. Based on the Halperin-Lee-Read (HLR) theory, the effect of the long-range Coulomb interaction and the internal Chern-Simons gauge fluctuation is analyzed with the random-phase approximation beyond the leading order contribution in small momentum expansion, and we observe that the interlayer paired states with a relative angular momentum $l=+1$ are energetically favored for filling $ν=\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{2}$ and $\frac{1}{4}+\frac{1}{4}$. The degeneracy between states with $\pm l$ is li…
A detailed study of charge transport in the paramagnetic phase of Ho0.8Lu0.2B12 strongly correlated antiferromagnet was carried out at temperatures 1.9-300 K in magnetic fields up to 80 kOe. Four mono-domain single crystals with different orientation of normal vectors to the lateral surface of Ho0.8Lu0.2B12 samples were investigated in order to establish the changes in Hall effect due to the anisotropy, induced by (i) the electronic phase separation (dynamic charge stripes) and (ii) formation of the disordered cage-glass state below 60 K. It was demonstrated that in magnetic fields above 40 kO…
The origin of the weak insulating behavior of the resistivity, i.e. $ρ_{xx}\propto\ln(1/T)$, revealed when magnetic fields ($H$) suppress superconductivity in underdoped cuprates has been a longtime mystery. Surprisingly, the high-field behavior of the resistivity observed recently in charge- and spin-stripe-ordered La-214 cuprates suggests a metallic, as opposed to insulating, high-field normal state. Here we report the vanishing of the Hall coefficient in this field-revealed normal state for all $T<(2-6)T_{\mathrm{c}}^{0}$, where $T_{\mathrm{c}}^{0}$ is the zero-field superconducting transit…
We report the magnetic and electronic transport properties of the inversion and time-reversal symmetry breaking Weyl semimetal NdAlGe. This material is analogous to NdAlSi, whose helical magnetism presents a rare example of a Weyl-mediated collective phenomenon, but with a larger spin-orbit coupling. Our neutron diffraction experiments revealed that NdAlGe, similar to NdAlSi, supports an incommensurate Ising spin density wave ($T_{\text{inc}}=6.8$ K) with a small helical spin canting of 3$^\circ$ and a long-wavelength of $\sim$ 35 nm, which transitions to a commensurate ferrimagnetic state bel…
We present a generalization of the composite Fermion picture for a muticomponent quantum Hall plasma which contains particle with different effective charges. The model predicts very well the low-lying states of a $ν=5/2$ quantum Hall state found in numerical diagonalization.

The Fibonacci topological order is the simplest platform for a universal topological quantum computer, consisting of a single type of non-Abelian anyon, $τ$, with fusion rule $τ\timesτ=1+τ$. While it has been proposed that the anyon spectrum of the $ν=12/5$ fractional quantum Hall state includes a Fibonacci sector, a dynamical picture of how a pure Fibonacci state may emerge in a quantum Hall system has been lacking. Here we use recently proposed non-Abelian dualities to construct a Fibonacci state of bosons at filling $ν=2$ starting from a trilayer of integer quantum Hall states. Our parent t…
Composite fermions have played a seminal role in understanding the quantum Hall effect, particularly the formation of a compressible `composite Fermi liquid' (CFL) at filling factor nu = 1/2. Here we suggest that in multi-layer systems interlayer Coulomb repulsion can similarly generate `metallic' behavior of composite fermions between layers, even if the electrons remain insulating. Specifically, we propose that a quantum Hall bilayer with nu = 1/2 per layer at intermediate layer separation may host such an interlayer coherent CFL, driven by exciton condensation of composite fermions. This ph…
We perform a detailed comparison of the Dirac composite fermion and the recently proposed bimetric theory for a quantum Hall Jain states near half filling. By tuning the composite Fermi liquid to the vicinity of a nematic phase transition, we find that the two theories are equivalent to each other. We verify that the single mode approximation for the response functions and the static structure factor becomes reliable near the phase transition. We show that the dispersion relation of the nematic mode near the phase transition can be obtained from the Dirac brackets between the components of the…
We theoretically investigate the nature of the state at quarter filled lowest Landau level and predict that, as the quantum well width is increased, a transition occurs from the composite fermion Fermi sea into a novel non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall state that is topologically equivalent to $f$-wave pairing of composite fermions. This state is topologically distinct from the familiar $p$-wave paired Pfaffian state. We compare our calculated phase diagram with experiments and make predictions for many observable quantities.
Haldane's geometrical description of fractional quantum Hall states is generalized to compressible states. It is shown that anisotropy in the composite fermion Fermi surface is a direct reflection of this intrinsic geometry. A simple model is introduced in which the geometric parameter can be obtained exactly from other parameters including electron mass anisotropy. Our results compare favorably with recent measurements of anisotropy in composite fermion Fermi surface [D. Kamburov, Y. Liu, M. Shayegan, L. N. Pfeiffer, K. W. West, and K. W. Baldwin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 206801 (2013)]. Broader…
Even though composite fermions in the fractional quantum Hall liquid are well established, it is not yet known up to what energies they remain intact. We probe the high-energy spectrum of the 1/3 liquid directly by resonant inelastic light scattering, and report the observation of a large number of new collective modes. Supported by our theoretical calculations, we associate these with transitions across two or more composite fermions levels. The formation of quasiparticle levels up to high energies is direct evidence for the robustness of topological order in the fractional quantum Hall effec…
We develop a composite Dirac fermion theory for the fractional quantum Hall effects (QHE) near charge neutrality in graphene. We show that the interactions between the composite Dirac fermions lead to dynamical mass generation through exciton condensation. The four-fold spin-valley degeneracy is fully lifted due to the mass generation and the exchange effects such that the odd-denominator fractional QHE observed in the vicinity of charge neutrality can be understood in terms of the integer QHE of the composite Dirac fermions. At the filling factor $ν=1/2$, we show that the massive composite Di…
Numerical studies by Wójs, Yi and Quinn have suggested that an unconventional fractional quantum Hall effect is plausible at filling factors $ν=$ 1/3 and 1/5, provided the interparticle interaction has an unusual form for which the energy of two fermions in the relative angular momentum three channel dominates. The interaction between composite fermions in the second $Λ$ level (composite fermion analog of the electronic Landau level) satisfies this property, and recent studies have supported unconventional fractional quantum Hall effect of composite fermions at $ν^*=$ 4/3 and 5/3, which manife…
The classic composite fermion field theory (Ref. 1) builds up an excellent framework to uniformly study important physical objects and globally explain anomalous experimental phenomena in fractional quantum Hall physics while there are also inherent weaknesses. We present a nonperturbative emergent Dirac fermion theory from this strongly correlated composite fermion field theory, which overcomes these serious long-standing shortcomings. The particle-hole symmetry of Dirac equation resolves this particle-hole symmetry enigma in the composite fermion field theory. With the help of presented nume…
Hall viscosity, also known as the Lorentz shear modulus, has been proposed as a topological property of a quantum Hall fluid. Using a recent formulation of the composite fermion theory on the torus, we evaluate the Hall viscosities for a large number of fractional quantum Hall states at filling factors of the form $ν=n/(2pn\pm 1)$, where $n$ and $p$ are integers, from the explicit wave functions for these states. The calculated Hall viscosities $η^A$ agree with the expression $η^A=(\hbar/4) {\cal S}ρ$, where $ρ$ is the density and ${\cal S}=2p\pm n$ is the "shift" in the spherical geometry. We…
The microscopic wave functions of the composite fermion theory can incorporate electron mass anisotropy by a trivial rescaling of the coordinates. These wave functions are very likely adiabatically connected to the actual wave functions of the anisotropic fractional quantum Hall states. We show in this article that they possess the nice property that their energies can be analytically related to the previously calculated energies for the isotropic states through a universal scale factor, thus allowing an estimation of several observables in the thermodynamic limit for all fractional quantum Ha…
While the integer quantum Hall effect of composite fermions manifests as the prominent fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) of electrons, the FQHE of composite fermions produces further, more delicate states, arising from a weak residual interaction between composite fermions. We study the spin phase diagram of these states, motivated by the recent experimental observation by Liu {\em et al.} \cite{Liu14a,Liu14b} of several spin-polarization transitions at 4/5, 5/7, 6/5, 9/7, 7/9, 8/11 and 10/13 in GaAs systems. We show that the FQHE of composite fermions is much more prevalent in multicompon…
Long-range interactions drive some of the rich phenomenology of quasiparticle collective states in the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) regime. We test for analogues in models of fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) derived from a screened Coulomb interaction. We find that the uniform FCI liquid is surprisingly robust to long-range interactions but gives way to a unidirectional charge density wave (CDW) of fractionally charged quasiparticles with increased screening length. Our results show that FCIs offer a robust and important platform for studying quasiparticles collective states.
The spin-excitations of a fractional quantum Hall system are evaluated within a bosonization approach. In a first step, we generalize Murthy and Shankar's Hamiltonian theory of the fractional quantum Hall effect to the case of composite fermions with an extra discrete degree of freedom. Here, we mainly investigate the spin degrees of freedom, but the proposed formalism may be useful also in the study of bilayer quantum-Hall systems, where the layer index may formally be treated as an isospin. In a second step, we apply a bosonization scheme, recently developed for the study of the two-dimensio…
