In two-dimensional electron systems confined to GaAs quantum wells, as a function of either tilting the sample in magnetic field or increasing density, we observe multiple transitions of the fractional quantum Hall states (FQHSs) near filling factors $ν=3/4$ and 5/4. The data reveal that these are spin-polarization transitions of interacting two-flux composite Fermions, which form their own FQHSs at these fillings. The fact that the reentrant integer quantum Hall effect near $ν=4/5$ always develops following the transition to full spin polarization of the $ν=4/5$ FQHS strongly links the reentrant phase to a pinned \emph{ferromagnetic} Wigner crystal of two-flux composite Fermions.
Conventional wisdom had long held that a composite particle behaves just like an ordinary Newtonian particle. In this paper, we derive the effective dynamics of a type-I Wigner crystal of composite particles directly from its microscopic wave function. It indicates that the composite particles are subjected to a Berry curvature in the momentum space as well as an emergent dissipationless viscosity. Therefore, contrary to the general belief, composite particles follow the more general Sundaram-Niu dynamics instead of the ordinary Newtonian one. We show that the presence of the Berry curvature i…
The interplay of strong Coulomb interactions and of topology is currently under intense scrutiny in various condensed matter and atomic systems. One example of this interplay is the phase competition of fractional quantum Hall states and the Wigner solid in the two-dimensional electron gas. Here we report a Wigner solid at $ν=1.79$ and its melting due to fractional correlations occurring at $ν=9/5$. This Wigner solid, that we call the reentrant integer quantum Hall Wigner solid, develops in a range of Landau level filling factors that is related by particle-hole symmetry to the so called reent…
The electronic excitations at the edges of a Hall bar not much wider than a few magnetic lengths are studied theoretically at filling $ν= 2$. Both mean-field theory and Luttinger liquid theory techniques are employed for the case of a null Zeeman energy splitting. The first calculation yields a stable spin-density wave state along the bar, while the second one predicts dominant Wigner-crystal correlations along the edges of the bar. We propose an antiferromagnetic Wigner-crystal groundstate for the edge electrons that reconciles the two results. A net Zeeman splitting is found to produce canti…
In this report, we study ultra-high-mobility two-dimensional (2D) electron/hole systems with high precision capacitance measurement. We find that the capacitance charge appears only at the fringe of the gate at high magnetic field when the 2D conductivity decreases significantly. At integer quantum Hall effects, the capacitance vanishes and forms a plateau at high temperatures $T\gtrsim 300$ mK, which surprisingly, disappears at $T\lesssim 100$ mK. This anomalous behavior is likely a manifestation that the dilute particles/vacancies in the top-most Landau level form Wigner crystal, which has f…
The two dimensional system of electrons in a high magnetic field offers an opportunity to investigate a phase transition from a quantum liquid into a Wigner solid. Recent experiments have revealed an incipient composite fermion liquid in a parameter range where theory and many experiments had previously suggested the Wigner crystal phase, thus calling into question our current understanding. This Letter shows how very small quantitative corrections (< 1%) in the energy due to the weak interaction between composite fermions can cause a fundamental change in the nature of the ground state, thus …
Experimental results indicating the existence of the high magnetic field Wigner Crystal have been available for a number of years. While variational wavefunctions have demonstrated the instability of the Laughlin liquid to a Wigner Crystal at sufficiently small filling, calculations of the excitation gaps have been hampered by the strong correlations. Recently a new Hamiltonian formulation of the fractional quantum Hall problem has been developed. In this work we extend the Hamiltonian approach to include states of nonuniform density, and use it to compute the excitation gaps of the Wigner Cry…
We argue that the naively expected singularities of the Fermi surface, in the mixed composite boson - composite fermion states proposed [S.H. Simon et al., PRL 91, 046803(2003)] for the evolution of ν= 1 bilayer quantum Hall system with distance, are obliterated. Our conclusion is based on a careful analysis of the momentum distribution in ν= 1/2 single-layer composite-fermion state. We point out to a possibility of the phenomenon hitherto unknown outside Kondo lattice systems when, in a translationally invariant system, Fermi-liquid-like portion of electrons enlarges its volume.
Interactions between the constituents of a condensed matter system can drive it through a plethora of different phases due to many-body effects. A prominent platform for this type of behavior is a two-dimensional electron system in a magnetic field, which evolves intricately through various gaseous, liquid and solids phases governed by Coulomb interaction. Here we report on the experimental observation of a phase transition between the Laughlin liquid of composite fermions and the adjacent insulating phase of a magnetic field-induced Wigner solid. The experiments are performed in the lowest La…
When the kinetic energy of a collection of interacting two-dimensional (2D) electrons is quenched at very high magnetic fields so that the Coulomb repulsion dominates, the electrons are expected to condense into an ordered array, forming a quantum Wigner crystal (WC). Although this exotic state has long been suspected in high-mobility 2D electron systems at very low Landau level fillings ($ν<<1$), its direct observation has been elusive. Here we present a new technique and experimental results that directly probe the magnetic-field-induced WC. We measure the magneto-resistance of a bilayer ele…
We discuss the composite fermion pairing state in bilayer quantum Hall systems. After the evaluation of the range of the inter-layer separation in which the quantum Hall state is stabilized, we discuss the effect of inter-layer tunneling on the composite fermion pairing state at ν=1/2. We show that there is a cusp at the transition point between the Halperin (3,3,1) state and the Pfaffian state.
The ground state cohesive energies per electron of the composite fermion (CF) Fermi sea, the Laughlin state and the charge density wave (CDW) at higher Landau levels (LLs) are computed. It is shown that whereas for $n\geq 2$ LL, the CDW state is generally more energetically preferable than those of the CF liquid and the Laughlin liquid, the $ν=4+1/6$ CF liquid state unexpectedly has lower ground state energy than that of the CDW state. We suggest this CF liquid between the Wigner crystal and the bubble phase may lead to the crossover from the normal integer quantum Hall liquid to the novel re-…
We show that the entanglement spectrum associated with a certain class of strongly correlated many-body states --- the wave functions proposed by Laughlin and Jain to describe the fractional quantum Hall effect --- can be very well described in terms of a simple model of non-interacting (or weakly interacting) composite fermions.
We report the observation of a resonance in the microwave spectra of the real diagonal conductivities of a two-dimensional electron system within a range of ~ +- .0.015 $ from filling factor $ν=1/3$. The resonance is remarkably similar to resonances previously observed near integer $ν$, and is interpreted as the collective pinning mode of a disorder-pinned Wigner solid phase of $e/3$-charged carriers .
Charged excitons of composite fermions (CFs) are considered in the fractional quantum Hall effect. Energies of the charged CF excitons are computed at $ν=1/3$ as a function of the size of exciton. We show that the charged CF exciton with size of roton is lower in energy than the unbound state of a neutral roton and a lone charge. Therefore we propose that the lowest-energy excitation of the fractional quantum Hall effect is in fact due to the charged excitons of composite fermions composed of two CF-particles and one CF-hole. We believe that charged excitons of composite fermions shed new ligh…
Composite fermion metal states emerge in quantum Hall bilayers at total Landau level filling factor $ν_T$=1 when the tunneling gap collapses by application of in-plane components of the external magnetic field. Evidence of this transformation is found in the continua of spin excitations observed by inelastic light scattering below the spin-wave mode at the Zeeman energy. The low-lying spin modes are interpreted as quasiparticle excitations with simultaneous changes in spin orientation and composite fermion Landau level index.
A recently developed model of interacting composite fermions, is used to investigate different composite-fermion phases. Their interaction potential allows for the formation of both solid and new quantum-liquid phases, which are interpreted in terms of second-generation composite fermions and which may be responsible for the fractional quantum Hall states observed at unusual filling factors, such as nu=4/11. Projection of the composite-fermion dynamics to a single level, involved in the derivation of the Hamiltonian of interacting composite fermions, reveals the underlying self-similarity of t…
The The composite fermion model (CF) of the quantum Hall effect which gives the correct series of charges is based on attachment of flux quanta to the electron. The construction of the series of charges leads to a field expression which requires that flux quanta are attached to the electron. The series based on the experimental data is correct but the field deduced from such a series is found to be incorrect. The attachment of even number of flux quanta to an electron required by the CF model is found to be internally inconsistent.
The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) is extensively studied, but the explanation for Hall plateau widths and excitation energy gaps remains elusive. We study the effective theory of FQHE built upon experimental inputs of Hall current distribution, edge dynamics, and many-body correlations. We argue that correlated composites of integer spin, comprising electrons and their images, localized at the edge of the incompressible strip are the basic transport entity. We show in the lowest Landau level that Zeeman interactions of these composites produce all odd denominator plateaus and effective…
Exact diagonalization results are reported for the lowest rotational band of N=6 electrons in strong magnetic fields in the range of high angular momenta 70 <= L <= 140 (covering the corresponding range of fractional filling factors 1/5 >= nu >= 1/9). A detailed comparison of energetic, spectral, and transport properties (specifically, magic angular momenta, radial electron densities, occupation number distributions, overlaps and total energies, and exponents of current-voltage power law) shows that the recently discovered rotating-electron-molecule wave functions [Phys. Rev. B 66, 115315 (200…
Competition between liquid and solid states in two-dimensional electron system is an intriguing problem in condensed matter physics. We have investigated competing Wigner crystal and fractional quantum Hall ( FQH ) liquid phases in atomically thin suspended graphene devices in Corbino geometry. Low temperature magnetoconductance and transconductance measurements along with $IV$ characteristics all indicate strong charge density dependent modulation of electron transport. Our results show unconventional FQH phases which do not fit the standard Jain's series for conventional FQH states, instead …
Magnetotransport measurements were performed in a ultra-high mobility GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well of density $\sim 3.0 \times 10^{11}$ $cm^{-2}$. The temperature dependence of the magnetoresistance $R_{xx}$ was studied in detail in the vicinity of $ν={9/2}$. In particular, we discovered new minima in $R_{xx}$ at filling factor $ν\simeq 4{1/5}$ and $4{4/5}$, but only at intermediate temperatures $80\lesssim T\lesssim 120$ mK. We interpret these as evidence for a fractional quantum Hall liquid forming in the N=2 Landau level and competing with bubble and Wigner crystal phases favored at lower tempe…
We review the recently proposed Dirac composite fermion theory of the half-filled Landau level. This paper is based on a talk given at the Nambu Symposium at University of Chicago, March 11-13, 2016.
We study the pairing symmetry of the interlayer paired state of composite fermions in quantum Hall bilayers. Based on the Halperin-Lee-Read (HLR) theory, the effect of the long-range Coulomb interaction and the internal Chern-Simons gauge fluctuation is analyzed with the random-phase approximation beyond the leading order contribution in small momentum expansion, and we observe that the interlayer paired states with a relative angular momentum $l=+1$ are energetically favored for filling $ν=\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{2}$ and $\frac{1}{4}+\frac{1}{4}$. The degeneracy between states with $\pm l$ is li…
Recent electron quantum optics experiments performed with on-demand single electron sources call for a mixed time/frequency approach to electronic quantum coherence. Here, we present a Wigner function representation of first order electronic coherence and show that is provides a natural visualization of the excitations emitted by recently demonstrated single electron sources. It also gives a unified perspective on single particle and two particle interferometry experiments. In particular, we introduce a non-classicality criterion for single electron coherence and discuss it in the context of M…
A recent letter [H. Zhu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 126803 (2010)] reports the first measurements of a pinned mode in a Wigner solid at the (electronic) nu = 1/3 fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) filling. The authors suggest that an interpretation of their findings may be found within the interacting composite fermion (ICF) theory. However, to date there is no record reporting crystalline correlations for nu ~ 1/3 obtained from ICF theory, or related theories. We argue that an appropriate interpretation of these findings follows naturally from the rotating-Wigner-molecule approach, which…
We consider the two lowest Landau levels at half filling. In the higher Landau level (nu =5/2), we find a first order phase transition separating a compressible striped phase from a paired quantum Hall state, which is identified as the Moore-Read state. The critical point is very near the Coulomb potential and the transition can be driven by increasing the width of the electron layer. We find a much weaker transition (either second order or a crossover) from pairing to the composite fermion Fermi liquid behavior. A very similar picture is obtained for the lowest Landau level but the transition…
We discuss the non-equilibrium dynamics of condensed matter/quantum field systems in the framework of Keldysh technique. In order to deal with the inhomogeneous systems we use the Wigner-Weyl formalism. Unification of the mentioned two approaches is demonstrated on the example of Hall conductivity. We express Hall conductivity through the Wigner transformed two-point Green's functions. We demonstrate how this expression is reduced to the topological number in thermal equilibrium at zero temperature. At the same time both at finite temperature and out of equilibrium the topological invariance i…
Exact diagonalization of a two-dimensional electron gas in a strong magnetic field in the disk geometry shows that there exists a filling factor range in the second Landau level where the states significantly differ from those in the lowest Landau level. We show that the difference arises because the interaction between composite fermions is not negligible in higher Landau levels, as indicated by a substantial mixing between composite-fermion Landau-like levels, or lambda levels. We find that the exact ground state is well reproduced by composite fermion theory with lambda level mixing incorpo…
The electron-electron interaction in the Landau levels of bilayer graphene is markedly different from that of conventional semiconductors such as GaAs. We show that in the zeroth Landau level of bilayer graphene, in the orbital which is dominated by the non-relativistic second Landau level wave function, by tuning the magnetic field a topological quantum phase transition from an Abelian composite fermion to a non-Abelian parton fractional quantum Hall state can be induced at filling factors $1/2, ~2/5$ and $3/7$. The parton states host exotic anyons that can potentially be utilized to store an…
Abstract We theoretically study the realization of quantum anomalous Hall insulator (QAHI) of composite fermions (CFs) in the twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) system. We show that the moiré pattern in TBG is not only able to provide a commensurate moiré superlattice, but also a tunable effective periodic potential necessary for the realization, without the need of imposing an additional superstructure as in the conventional GaAs system. These make the TBG an ideal platform for realizing the QAHI of CFs. We establish the phase diagram with respect to tunable experimental parameters based on the D…
We study a bilayer system hosting exotic many-body states of two-dimensional electron systems (2DESs) in close proximity but isolated from one another by a thin barrier. One 2DES has low electron density and forms a Wigner solid (WS) at high magnetic fields. The other has much higher density and, in the same field exhibits fractional quantum Hall states (FQHSs). The WS manifests microwave resonances which are understood as pinning modes, collective oscillations of the WS within the small but finite ubiquitous disorder. Our measurements reveal a striking evolution of the pinning mode frequencie…
Recently several moiré super-lattice systems are proposed to host nearly flat $\pm$ Chern bands: the bands of the two valleys have opposite Chern numbers. In these systems the charge of each valley is separately conserved. For the $C=\pm 1$ case, in the perfect flat band limit, the system can be mapped to two Landau levels from opposite magnetic fields. Motivated by these promising experimental realizations, we consider a quantum Hall bilayers from opposite magnetic fields close to the filling $ν_T=\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{2}$. We add inter-layer repulsive interaction starting from two decoupled C…

An inaccuracy of composite fermion model is identified for Landau level fillings out of 1/p, p odd. The corrected version of hierarchy for fractional quantum Hall effect is proposed by mapping onto integer effect within the cyclotron braid approach. Flux-tubes and vortices for composite fermion constructions are explained in terms of cyclotron braids. The even denominator fractional lowest Landau level fillings, including Hall metal, are also discussed in cyclotron braid terms.
Theoretical studies of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) in graphene have so far focused on the plausibility and stability of the previously known FQHE states for the interaction matrix elements appropriate for graphene. We consider FQHE for SU(4) symmetry, as appropriate for the situation when all four spin and valley Landau bands are degenerate, and predict new FQHE states that have no analog in GaAs. These result from an essential interplay between the two-fold spin and valley degeneracies at fractions of the form $ν=n/(2pn\pm 1)$, for $n\geq 3$. Conditions are outlined for the obse…
Much of the present day qualitative phenomenology of the fractional quantum Hall effect can be understood by neglecting the interactions between composite fermions altogether. For example the fractional quantum Hall effect at $ν=n/(2pn\pm 1)$ corresponds to filled composite-fermion Landau levels, and the compressible state at $ν=1/2p$ to the Fermi sea of composite fermions. Away from these filling factors, the residual interactions between composite fermions will determine the nature of the ground state. In this article, a model is constructed for the residual interaction between composite ferm…
Particle-hole symmetry breaking in the fractional quantum Hall effect has recently been studied both theoretically and experimentally with most works focusing on non-Abelian states in the second electronic Landau level. In this work, we theoretically investigate particle-hole symmetry breaking of incompressible fractional quantum Hall states in the lowest Landau level under the influence of the realistic effect of a finite magnetic field strength. A finite magnetic field induces Landau level and sub-band mixing which are known to break particle-hole symmetry at the level of the Hamiltonian. We…
Neutral graphene in strong magnetic fields is believed to be an (exchange stabilized) integer Hall state of completely filled up spin (say) and empty down spin bands of n = 0, two fold valley degenerate Landau levels. We suggest that correlation energy gain from a nearly SU(4) singlet (2 spin $\times$ 2 valley) composite fermi sea formation, at $ν\approx$ \hlf filling for each component, destabilizes ferromagnetic integer quantum Hall state. This radically different scenario is consistent with a dissipative gapless state seen in experiments in neutral graphene. Interesting paired Hall states a…
The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) states at half integer Landau fillings ($ν$) have long been of great interest, since they have correlations that differ from those of the fundamental Laughlin states found at odd denominators. At $ν=1/2$ the FQHE has been observed in wide or double quantum wells, and is ascribed to the two-component Halperin-Laughlin $Ψ_{331}$ state. $Ψ_{331}$ excitations carry charge $\pm e/4$, like the carriers of $ν=5/2$ states which are of interest in quantum computation. Further, such an excitation (quasiparticle or -hole) of $Ψ_{331}$ has unequal, opposite charge…
Almost all quantum Hall effect to date can be understood as {\em integral} quantum Hall effect of appropriate particles, namely electrons or composite fermions. This paper investigates theoretically the feasibility of nested states of composite fermions which would lead to a quantum Hall effect that cannot be understood as integral quantum Hall effect of composite fermions. The weak residual interaction between composite fermions will play a crucial role in the establishment of such quantum Hall states by opening a gap in a partially filled composite-fermion level. To treat the problem of inte…
We show that a weak hexagonal periodic potential could transform a two-dimensional electron gas with an even-denominator magnetic filling factor to a quantum anomalous Hall insulator of composite fermions, giving rise to fractionally quantized Hall effect. The system provides a realization of the Haldane honeycomb-net model, albeit in a composite fermion system. We further propose a trial wave function for the state, and numerically evaluate its relative stability against the competing Hofstadter state. Possible sets of experimental parameters are proposed.
In bilayer quantum Hall systems at filling fractions near nu=1/2+1/2, as the spacing d between the layers is continuously decreased, intra-layer correlations must be replaced by inter-layer correlations, and the composite fermion (CF) Fermi seas at large d must eventually be replaced by a composite boson (CB) condensate or "111 state" at small d. We propose a scenario where CBs and CFs coexist in two interpenetrating fluids in the transition. Trial wavefunctions describing these mixed CB-CF states compare very favorably with exact diagonalization results. A Chern-Simons transport theory is con…

The Hall viscosity has been proposed as a topological property of incompressible fractional quantum Hall states and can be evaluated as Berry curvature. This paper reports on the Hall viscosities of composite-fermion Fermi seas at $ν=1/m$, where $m$ is even for fermions and odd for bosons. A well-defined value for the Hall viscosity is not obtained by viewing the $1/m$ composite-fermion Fermi seas as the $n\rightarrow \infty$ limit of the Jain $ν=n/(nm\pm 1)$ states, whose Hall viscosities $(\pm n+m)\hbar ρ/4$ ($ρ$ is the two-dimensional density) approach $\pm \infty$ in the limit $n\rightarro…
Magnetotransport properties are investigated in a high-mobility two-dimensional electron system in the strained Si quantum well of a (100) Si_0.75Ge_0.25/Si/Si_0.75Ge_0.25 heterostructure, at temperatures down to 30mK and in magnetic fields up to 45T. We observe around ν=1/2 the two-flux composite fermion (CF) series of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) at ν=2/3, 3/5, 4/7, and at ν=4/9, 2/5, 1/3. Among these FQHE states, the ν=1/3, 4/7 and 4/9 states are seen for the first time in the Si/SiGe system. Interestingly, of the CF series, the 3/5 state is weaker than the nearby 4/7 state and…
Graphene, a single free-standing sheet of graphite with honeycomb lattice structure, is a semimetal with carriers that have linear dispersion. A consequence of this dispersion is the absence of Wigner crystallization in graphene, since the kinetic and potential energies both scale identically with the density of carriers. We study the ground state of graphene in the presence of a strong magnetic field focusing on states with broken translational symmetry. Our mean-field calculations show that at integer fillings a uniform state is preferred, whereas at non-integer filling factors Wigner crysta…
We propose a new ground state trial wavefunction for a two-dimensional Wigner crystal in a strong perpendicular magnetic field. The wavefunction includes Laughlin-Jastrow correlations between electron pairs, and may be interpreted as a crystal state of composite fermions or composite bosons. Treating the power $m$ of the Laughlin-Jastrow factor as a variational parameter, we use quantum Monte Carlo simulations to compute the energy of these new states. We find that our wavefunctions have lower energy than existing crystalline wavefunctions in the lowest Landau level. Our results are consistent…
We study the problem of a single Dirac fermion in a quantizing orbital magnetic field, when the chemical potential is at the Dirac point. This can be realized on the surface of a topological insulator, such as Bi2Se3, tuned to neutrality. We study the effect of both long range Coulomb interactions (strength alpha=e^2/(epsilon hbar v_F).) and local repulsion U which capture the effect of electron correlations. Interactions resolve the degeneracy of free fermions in the zeroth Landau level at half filling, but in a manner different from that in graphene. For weak interactions, U=0 and alpha<<1, …
We use both Mutual Composite Fermion (MCF) and Composite Boson (CB) approach to study balanced and im-balanced Bi-Layer Quantum Hall systems (BLQH) and make critical comparisons between the two approaches. We find the CB approach is superior to the MCF approach in studying ground states with different kinds of broken symmetries. In the phase representation of the CB theory, we first study the Excitonic superfluid state (ESF). The theory puts spin and charge degree freedoms in the same footing, explicitly bring out the spin-charge connection and classify all the possible excitations in a system…
