We investigate the effect of static anti-phase stripe order on the weak-field Hall effect of electrons on a two-dimensional square lattice with electron dispersion appropriate to the high T$_c$ cuprates. We first consider the cases where the magnitudes of the spin and charge stripe potentials are smaller than or of the same order as the bandwidth of the two-dimensional electrons, so that the electronic properties are not too strongly one-dimensional. In a model with only spin stripe potential, and at carrier concentrations appropriate to hole-doped cuprates, increasing the stripe scattering potential from zero leads to an increase in $R_H$, followed by a sign change. If the scattering amplitude is yet further increased, a second sign change occurs. The results are in semiquantitative agreement with data. In a charge-stripe-potential-only model, $R_H$ increases as the charge stripe scattering strength increases, with no sign change occurring. In a model with both spin and charge stripe potentials, $R_H$ may be enhanced or may change sign, depending on the strengths of the two scattering potentials. We also consider the case in which the magnitudes of the stripe potentials are much larger than the bandwidth, where analytical results can be obtained. In this limit, the system is quasi-one-dimensional, while $R_H$ remains finite and its sign is determined by the carrier density and the electron band parameters.
We supplement a previously published calculation of the Hall effect in stripe ordered cuprates by presenting results for the physically relevant sign of the potential arising from charge ordering. The new results are more consistent with data, underscoring the importance of charge ordering in cuprates.
Motivated by recent observations of charge order in the pseudogap regime of hole-doped cuprates, we show that {\it crisscrossed} stripe order can be stabilized by coherent, momentum-dependent interlayer tunneling, which is known to be present in several cuprate materials. We further describe how subtle variations in the couplings between layers can lead to a variety of stripe ordering arrangements, and discuss the implications of our results for recent experiments in underdoped cuprates.
Several non-cuprates layered transition-metal oxides exhibit clear evidence for stripe ordering of charges and magnetic moments. Therefore, stripe order should be considered as the typical consequence of doping a Mott insulator, but only in cuprates stripe order or fluctuating stripes coexist with metallic properties. A linear relationship between the charge concentration and the incommensurate structural and magnetic modulations can be considered as the finger print of stripe ordering with localized degrees of freedom. In nickelates and in cobaltates with K2NiF4 structure, doping suppresses t…
We develop a concrete theory of continuous stripe melting quantum phase transitions in two dimensional metals and the associated Fermi surface reconstruction. Such phase transitions are strongly coupled but yet theoretically tractable in situations where the stripe ordering is destroyed by proliferating doubled dislocations of the charge stripe order. The resulting non-Landau quantum critical point (QCP) has strong stripe fluctuations which we show decouple dynamically from the Fermi surface even though static stripe ordering reconstructs the Fermi surface. We discuss connections to various st…
We argue that effective 1D models of stripes in the cuprate superconductors can be constructed by studying ground states and elementary excitations of domain walls in 2D model antiferromagnets. This method, applied to the t-J model with Ising anisotropy, yields two such limiting cases: an ordinary 1D electron gas and a 1D gas of holons strongly coupled to transversal fluctuations of the stripe.
Phonon anomalies observed in various high $T_c$ cuprates by neutron experiments are analyzed theoretically in terms of the stripe concept. The phonon self-energy correction is evaluated by taking into account the charge collective modes of stripes, giving rise to dispersion gap, or kink and shadow phonon modes at twice the wave number of spin stripe. These features coincide precisely with observations. The gapped branches of the phonon are found to be in-phase and out-of-phase oscillations relative to the charge collective mode.
Using the mean field theory in the slave-boson approach we analyzed the electron correlation effects in the stripe phases. One finds that a finite next-nearest neighbor hopping $t'$ plays an important role in the low doping regime, where it controls the crossover from the filled diagonal to half-filled vertical/horizontal stripes at doping $ x\simeq 1/16$.
Spectral weight is investigated for metallic diagonal stripe state in two dimensional Hubbard model, and Fermi arc observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on LSCO is discussed. The Fermi arc coming from the mid-gap state of diagonal stripe appears near $(\fracπ{2},\fracπ{2})$ and equivalent position in the reciprocal space, and the gap opens below the mid-gap state. We show how these spectral weight structure depends on the phasing of stripes, i.e., site-centered or bond-centered stripes.
We examine the thermodynamic and thermoelectric properties in the stripe phase of high-Tc cuprates, by using the finite-temperature Lanczos technique for the t-J model with a potential that stabilizes vertical charge stripes. When the stripe potential is turned on, the entropy is suppressed as a consequence of the formation of one-dimensional charge stripes accompanied by an enhancement of antiferromagnetic spin correlation in the spin domains. The stripe formation leads also to weak temperature dependence of the chemical potential, leading to the suppression of the thermoelectric power. The s…
Upon doping, Mott insulators often exhibit symmetry breaking where charge carriers and their spins organize into patterns known as stripes. For high-Tc superconducting cuprates, stripes are widely suspected to exist in a fluctuating form. Here, we use numerically exact determinant quantum Monte Carlo calculations to demonstrate dynamical stripe correlations in the three-band Hubbard model, which represents the local electronic structure of the Cu-O plane. Our results, which are robust to varying parameters, cluster size, and boundary condition, strongly support the interpretation of a variety …
We analyze the anomalous behavior in hole-doped cuprates near 1/8 doping in terms of the commensurate-incommensurate transition of a stripe phase. Based on an effective Ginzburg-Landau theory appropriate for weak pinning, we calculate the commensurate-incommensurate transition point and the energies of the phason and amplitudon collective modes. Using experimentally available parameters, we estimate the phason gap (pinning frequency), the conductivity and the contribution of the phason mode to the dielectric function.
Monte Carlo simulations applied to the Spin-Fermion model for cuprates show the existence of antiferromagnetic spin domains and charge stripes upon doping. The stripes are partially filled, with a filling of approximately 1/2 hole per site, and they separate spin domains with a $π$ phase shift among them. The stripes observed run either along the x or y axes and they are separated by a large energy barrier. No special boundary conditions or external fields are needed to stabilize these structures at low temperatures. When magnetic incommensurate peaks are observed at momentum $π(1,1-δ)$ and sy…
The Hall constant R_H is considered for the stripe structures. In order to explain the vanishing of R_H in LNSCO at x = 1/8, we use the relation of R_H to the Drude weight D as well as direct numerical calculation, to obtain results within the t-J model, where the stripes are imposed via a charge potential and a staggered magnetic field. The origin of R_H ~ 0 is related to a maximum in D and the minimal kinetic energy in stripes with a hole filling ~ 1/2. The same argument indicates on a possibility of R_H ~ 0 in the whole range of static stripes for x < 1/8.
We discuss the effects of a quantum critical point located nearby optimum doping and related to local charge segregation (stripe phase). The fluctuations in the critical region produce at the same time a strong pairing mechanism and a non-Fermi liquid behavior in the normal phase above the superconducting critical temperature. Superconductivity is a stabilizing mechanism against charge ordering, i.e. the incommensurate charge density wave quantum critical point is unstable with respect to superconductivity. A complete scenario for the cuprates is presented.
The extended and standard t-J models are computationally studied on ladders and planes, with emphasis on the small J/t region. At couplings compatible with photoemission results for undoped cuprates, half-doped stripes separating $π$-shifted antiferromagnetic (AF) domains are found, as in Tranquada's interpretation of neutron experiments. Our main result is that the elementary stripe `"building-block" resembles the properties of $one$ hole at small J/t, with robust AF correlations across-the-hole induced by the local tendency of the charge to separate from the spin (G. Martins {\it et al.}, Ph…
A microscopic understanding of the strongly correlated physics of the cuprates must account for the translational and rotational symmetry breaking that is present across all cuprate families, commonly in the form of stripes. Here we investigate emergence of stripes in the Hubbard model, a minimal model believed to be relevant to the cuprate superconductors, using determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) simulations at finite temperatures and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) ground state calculations. By varying temperature, doping, and model parameters, we characterize the extent of s…
Some recent evidence for the existence of dynamic, metallic stripes in the 214-family of cuprates is reviewed. The mechanism of stripe pinning is considered, and changes in the charge density within stripes between the pinned and dynamic phases is discussed. From a purely experimental perspective, dynamic charge stripes are fully compatible with nodal ``quasiparticles'' and other electronic properties common to all superconducting cuprates.
Structural distortions in cuprate materials offer a microscopic origin for anisotropies in electron transport in the basal plane. Using a real-space Hartree-Fock approach, we consider the ground states of the anisotropic Hubbard (t_x \ne t_y) and t-J (t_x \ne t_y, J_x \ne J_y) models. Symmetrical but inhomogeneous (``polaronic'') charge structures in the isotropic models are altered even by rather small anisotropies to one-dimensional, stripe-like features. We find two distinct types of stripe, namely uniformly filled, antiphase domain walls and non-uniform, half-filled, in-phase ones. We char…
We show that the lightly doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} can be described in terms of a stripe magnetic structure or soliton picture. The internal relationship between the recent neutron observation of the diagonal (x=0.05) to vertical (x >= 0.06) stripe transition, which was predicted, and the concomitant metal-insulator transition is clarified by this solitonic physics. The phase diagram with the unidentified transition lines between antiferromagnetic to stripe phases, the doping dependence of the modulation period, the origin of the mid-infrared optical absorption are investigated comparatively…
We calculate the influence of transverse fluctuations on the longitudinal dynamics in the striped phase of cuprates by using the bosonization technique. We find that a charge density wave instability can arise if the stripe is quarter filled and the underlying lattice potential has a zigzag symmetry. Our results explain why static stripes are experimentally observed in underdoped La_{2-x-y}Nd_ySr_xCuO_4 exactly at the onset of the low-temperature-tetragonal transition.
Recent quantum oscillation measurements on underdoped cuprates are shown to be consistent with the predictions of a mean field theory of the 1/8 magnetic antiphase stripe order proposed to occur in high-$T_c$ cuprates. In particular, for intermediate values of the stripe order parameter, the magneto-transport is found to be dominated by an electron pocket.
Charge and spin stripe order is a type of electronic crystal observed in certain layered cuprates associated with high-temperature superconductivity. Quantum-disordered stripes could be relevant for understanding the superconductivity. Here I discuss recent experimental characterizations of the stripe-ordered state in La(1.875)Ba(0.125)CuO(4), and compare them with properties of superconducting compositions.
The hole-doped standard and extended t-J models on ladders with anisotropic Heisenberg interactions are studied computationally in the interval $0.0 \leq λ\leq 1.0$ ($λ=0$, Ising; $λ=1$, Heisenberg). It is shown that the approximately half-doped stripes recently discussed at $λ=1$ survive in the anisotropic case ($λ$$<$1.0), particularly in the "extended" model. Due to the absence of spin fluctuations in the Ising limit and working in the rung basis, a simple picture emerges in which the stripe structure can be mostly constructed from the solution of the t-J model on chains. A comparison of re…
Members of the high Tc cuprate family (with defect free $CuO_2$ planes) are suggested to have an `{\em Intrinsic single layer superconducting} Tc', larger than the experimentally observed Tc, at a given hole concentration. This difference occurs to varying degrees among the different members, due to an anomalous response of the d-wave superconducting state to self generated charge perturbations. In particular, any quasi elastic charge stripe order, arising from electron-electron and electron- lattice coupling, can suppress the large intrinsic superconducting Tc. Existing experimental results o…
Recent experiments indicate that the tendency toward the formation of unidirectional charge density waves ("stripes") is common to various underdoped cuprates. We discuss momentum-resolved spectral properties of valence-bond stripes, comparing the situations of ideal and short-range stripe order, the latter being relevant for weak and/or disorder-pinned stripes. We find clear signatures of ordered stripes, although matrix element effects suppress most shadow band features. With decreasing stripe correlation length, stripe signatures are quickly washed out, the only remaining effect being a bro…
The tilt pattern of the CuO_6 octahedra in the LTT phase of the cuprate superconductors leads to planar anisotropies for the exchange coupling and hopping integrals. Here, we show that these anisotropies provide a possible structural mechanism for the orientation of stripes. A t_x-t_y-J_x-J_y model thus serves as an effective Hamiltonian to describe stripe formation and orientation in LTT-phase cuprates.
We investigate the formation of charge domain walls in an electron-doped extended Hubbard model for the superconducting cuprates. Within an unrestricted Hartree-Fock approach, extended by the introduction of slave-bosons to obtain a more proper treatment of strong correlations, we demonstrate the occurrence of stripes in the (1,1) and (1,-1) directions having one doped electron per stripe site. The different filling, direction and width of these electron-doped stripes with respect to those obtained in the hole-doped systems have interesting observable consequences, which are discussed.
Based on the unrestricted Gutzwiller approximation we study the possibility that the diagonal incommensurate spin scattering in the spin glass phase of lanthanum cuprates originates from stripe formation. Similar to the metallic phase two types of diagonal stripe structures appear to be stable: (a) site-centered textures which have one hole per site along the stripe and (b) ferromagnetic stair-case structures which are the diagonal equivalent to bond-centered stripes in the metallic phase and which on average have a filling of 3/4 holes per stripe site. We give a detailed analysis of the stabi…
We have performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements on the single-layer cuprate Bi2+xSr2-xCuO6+y (Bi2201) with x=0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5, a doping range that spans the spin-glass (SG) to superconducting (SC) phase boundary. The doping evolution of low energy spin fluctuations was found to be characterized by a change of incommensurate modulation wave vector from the tetragonal [110] to [100]/[010] directions, while maintaining a linear relation between the incommensurability and the hole concentration, delta p. In the SC regime, the spectral weight is strongly suppressed below 4 meV. Sim…
We study stripes in cuprates within the one-band and the three-band Hubbard model. Magnetic and charge excitations are described within the time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation. A variety of experiments (charge profile from resonant soft X-ray scattering, incommensurability vs. doping, optical excitations, magnetic excitations, etc.) are described within the same approach.
Based on the time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation we study the possibility that the diagonal incommensurate spin scattering in strongly underdoped lanthanum cuprates originates from antiferromagnetic domain walls (stripes). Calculation of the dynamic spin response for stripes in the diagonal phase yields the characteristic hour glass dispersion with the crossing of low energy Goldstone and high-energy branches at a characteristic energy Ecross at the antiferromagnetic wave-vector Q_{AF}. The high energy part is close to the parent antiferromagnet. Our results suggest that inelastic neutron …
The magnetic excitations of charge-stripe ordered La2NiO4.11 where investigated using polarized- and unpolarized-neutron scattering to determine the magnetic excitations of the charge stripe electrons. We observed a magnetic excitation mode consistent with the gapped quasi-one-dimensional antiferromagnetic correlations of the charge stripe electrons previously observed in La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4) x = 1/3 and x = 0.275.
Stripe fluctuations in La2NiO4.17 have been studied by 139La NMR using the field and temperature dependence of the linewidth and relaxation rates. In the formation process of the stripes the NMR line intensity is maximal below 230K, starts to diminish around 140K, disappears around 50K and recovers at 4K. These results are shown to be consistent with, but completely complementary to neutron measurements, and to be generic for oxygen doped nickelates and underdoped cuprates.
Within a model that supports stripe spin and charge order coexisting with a d$_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconducting phase, we study the self-consistently obtained electronic structure and the associated transverse dynamical spin susceptibility. In the coexisting phase of superconducting and static stripe order, the resulting particle-hole continuum can strongly damp parts of the low-energy spin wave branches. This provides insight into recent inelastic neutron scattering data revealing the dispersion of the low-energy collective magnetic modes of lanthanum based cuprate superconductors.
Motivated by experiments on LBCO-1/8 which suggest that stripe order co-exists with two-dimensional pairing without inter-layer phase coherence over an extended range of temperatures, we determine the inter-layer Josephson coupling in the presence of stripe order. We employ a mean-field description of bond-centered stripes, with a zero-momentum superconducting condensate and alternating stripe directions pinned by the low-temperature tetragonal (LTT) lattice structure. We show that the Fermi-surface reconstruction arising from strong stripe order can suppress the Josephson coupling between adj…
Several state-of-the-art numerical methods have observed static or fluctuating spin and charge stripes in doped two-dimensional Hubbard models, suggesting that these orders play a significant role in shaping the cuprate phase diagram. Many experiments, however, also indicate that the cuprates have strong electron-phonon ($e$-ph) coupling, and it is unclear how this interaction influences stripe correlations. We study static and fluctuating stripe orders in the doped singleband Hubbard-Holstein model using zero temperature variational Monte Carlo and finite temperature determinant quantum Monte…
The stability of charge ordered phases is doping dependent, with different materials having particularly stable ordered phases. In the half filled charge ordered phases of the cuprates this occurs at one eighth doping, whereas in charge-stripe ordered La2-xSrxNiO4+delta there is enhanced stability at one third doping. In this paper we discuss the known details of the charge-stripe order in La2-xSrxNiO4+delta, and how these properties lead to the one third doping stability.
Using a phenomenological lattice model of coupled spin and charge modes, we determine the spin susceptibility in the presence of fluctuating stripe charge order. We assume the charge fluctuations to be slow compared to those of the spins, and combine Monte Carlo simulations for the charge order parameter with exact diagonalization of the spin sector. Our calculations unify the spin dynamics of both static and fluctuating stripe phases and support the notion of a universal spin excitation spectrum in doped cuprate superconductors.
The recent experimental evidence in favor of stripe ordering in ferropnictides [Chuang {\it et. al.}, Science {\bf 327},181 (2010)] points to the new field of study for strongly correlated systems. Here we argue that due to the smallness of the chemical potential in ferropnictides the effects of stripe modulation are likely to be much more pronounced than in the cuprates leading to stronger degree of one-dimensionality. This may allow to treat the striped pnictides as an array of coupled one-dimensional spin liquids making them a good testing ground for various ideas concerning strongly correl…
Charge excitations were studied for stipe-ordered 214 compounds, La$_{5/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$NiO$_{4}$ and 1/8-doped La$_{2}$(Ba, Sr)$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering in hard x-ray regime. We have observed charge excitations at the energy transfer of 1 eV with the momentum transfer corresponding to the charge stripe spatial period both for the diagonal (nikelate) and parallel (cuprates) stripes. These new excitations can be interpreted as a collective stripe excitation or charge excitonic mode to a stripe-related in-gap state.
Neutron and X-ray scattering studies have provided strong evidence for coupled spatial modulations of charge and spin densities in layered nickelates and cuprates. The accumulated results for La(2-x)Sr(x)NiO(4+d) are consistent with the strongly-modulated topological-stripe concept. Clues from Nd-doped La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) suggest similar behavior for the cuprates. The experimental results are summarized, and features that conflict with an interpretation based on a Fermi-surface instability are emphasized. A rationalization for the differences in transport properties between the cuprates and nic…
We demonstrate that the strong anomalies in the high frequency LO-phonon spectrum in cuprate superconductors can in principle be explained by the enhanced electronic polarizability associated with the self-organized one dimensionality of metallic stripes. Contrary to the current interpretation in terms of transversal stripe fluctuations, the anomaly should occur at momenta parallel to the stripes. The doping dependence of the anomaly is naturally explained, and we predict that the phonon line-width and the spread of the anomaly in the transverse momentum decrease with increasing temperature wh…
The in-plane resistivity and out-of-plane resistivity of non-superconducting RBCO (R = Y, Tm) and Fe-doped Bi2212 single crystals are discussed. The comparison of electrical transport properties of the cuprates and quasi-one dimensional (1D) (TMTSF)2PF6 organic conductor suggests that RBCO and Bi2212 exhibit 1D transport properties, and the step rise at low temperatures in the resistivities of the cuprates and quasi-1D organic conductor is due to charge-density-wave ordering. We discuss also phonon-electron interactions in cuprates at low temperatures.
We review the current state of efforts to use resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS), which is an elastic, momentum-resolved, valence band probe of strongly correlated electron systems, to study stripe-like phenomena in copper-oxide superconductors and related materials. We review the historical progress including RSXS studies of Wigner crystallization in spin ladder materials, stripe order in 214-phase nickelates, 214-phase cuprates, and other systems. One of the major outstanding issues in RSXS concerns its relationship to more established valence band probes, namely angle-resolved photoemiss…
It has been argued that the spin-dynamics in cuprate superconductors is governed by the proximity to a zero-temperature critical point. This critical point would be related to a transition from the superconducting phase to an ordered stripe state. Using a coupled spin-ladder model, we investigate to what extent the strong quantum spin-fluctuations in the ordered stripe state can be attributed to the spin sector. For the bond-centered stripes, we find that our spin-only model can account for the observed spin-fluctuations. For site-ordered stripes, coupling of the spin and charge sector is need…
Striped superconductivity with lattice distortions is investigated based on the three-band Hubbard model for high-Tc cuprates. A stable inhomogeneous striped state is determined in the low-temperature tetragonal (LTT) phase with lattice distortions using a quantum variational Monte Carlo method. The ground state has vertical or horizontal hole-rich arrays coexisting with incommensurate magnetism and superconductivity induced by several percent lattice distortions. The superconductivity order parameter oscillates according to the inhomogeneity in the antiferromagnetic background with its maxima…
Experiments on underdoped cuprate superconductors suggest an intricate relation between the normal-state Nernst effect and stripe order: The Nernst signal appears enhanced near 1/8 hole doping and its onset temperature scales with the stripe-ordering temperature over some range of doping. Here, we employ a phenomenological quasiparticle model to calculate the normal state Nernst signal in the presence of stripe order. We find that Fermi pockets caused by translational symmetry breaking lead to a strongly enhanced Nernst signal with a sign depending on the modulation period of the ordered state…
One type of order that has been observed to compete with superconductivity in cuprates involves alternating charge and antiferromagnetic stripes. Recent neutron scattering studies indicate that the magnetic excitation spectrum of a stripe-ordered sample is very similar to that observed in superconducting samples. In fact, it now appears that there may be a universal magnetic spectrum for the cuprates. One likely implication of this universal spectrum is that stripes of a dynamic form are present in the superconducting samples. On cooling through the superconducting transition temperature, a ga…
We examine the possibility that the experimentally observed enhancement of superconducting (SC) fluctuations above the SC transition temperature in the underdoped cuprates is caused by stripes -- an intrinsic electronic inhomogeneity, common to hole-doped cuprates. By evaluating the strengths of the diamagnetic response and the Nernst effect within the striped SC model, we find results that are qualitatively consistent with the experimental observations. We make a prediction for anisotropic thermopower in detwinned samples that can be used to further test the proposed scenario.
Using Cu NQR in Eu-doped La_{2- x}Sr_xCuO_4 we show the evidence of the pinned stripe phase for moderate doping at 1.3K. The pinned fraction increases by one order of magnitude near hole doping x=1/8. The NQR lineshape reveals three inequivalent Cu positions: i) sites in the charged stripe; ii) nonmagnetic sites outside the stripes; iii) sites with a magnetic moment of 0.29 Bohr magnethon in the AF correlated regions. A dramatic change of the NQR signal for x > 0.18 correlating with the onset of bulk superconductivity corresponds to the depinning of the stripe phase. .
We perform the numerically exact diagonalization study of the t-J model with nonmagnetic impurities to clarify the relation between Zn impurities and the stripes. By examining the hole-hole correlation function for a two-hole \sqrt{18}x\sqrt{18} cluster with a single impurity, we find that the impurity has a tendency to stabilize vertical charge stripes. This tendency is caused by the gain of the kinetic energy of holes moving along the stripes that are formed avoiding the impurity.
We present a short account of the present experimental situation of stripes in cuprates followed by a review of our present understanding of their ground state and excited state properties. Collective modes, the dynamical structure factor, and the optical conductivity of stripes are computed using the time-dependent Gutzwiller approximation applied to realistic one band and three band Hubbard models, and are found to be in excellent agreement with experiment. On the other hand, experiments like angle-resolved photoemission and scanning tunneling microscopy show the coexistence of stripes at hi…
A spin density-wave quantum critical point (QCP) is the central organizing principle of organic, iron-pnictide, heavy-fermion and electron-doped cuprate superconductors. It accounts for the superconducting Tc dome, the non-Fermi-liquid resistivity, and the Fermi-surface reconstruction. Outside the magnetically ordered phase above the QCP, scattering and pairing decrease in parallel as the system moves away from the QCP. Here we argue that a similar scenario, based on a stripe-order QCP, is a central organizing principle of hole-doped cuprate superconductors. Key properties of Eu-LSCO, Nd-LSCO …
Recently, the experimental results by the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy suggested that an additional strong nearest neighbor attraction in the Hubbard model might be significant to describe the properties of doped cuprates more accurately. The stripe-ordered patterns, formed by the inhomogeneous distribution of spin, charge and pairing correlations in the CuO$_{2}$ planes, is a known feature of doped cuprates. In this work, the effect of the nearest neighbor attraction and the stripe phase are examined by using the constrained path quantum Monte Carlo method within the repulsive Hu…
A prevailing description of the stripe phase in underdoped cuprate superconductors is that the charge carriers (holes) phase segregate on a microscopic scale into hole rich and hole poor regions. We report resonant elastic x-ray scattering measurements of stripe-ordered La$_{1.475}$Nd$_{0.4}$Sr$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ at the Cu $L$ and O $K$ absorption edges that identify an additional feature of stripe order. Analysis of the energy dependence of the scattering intensity reveals that the dominant signature of the stripe order is a spatial modulation in the energies of Cu 3d and O 2p states rather tha…
The striped cuprate La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ ($x=\frac18)$ undergoes several transitions below the charge-ordering temperature $T_{co}$ = 54 K. From Nernst experiments, we find that, below $T_{co}$, there exists a large, anomalous Nernst signal $e_{N,even}(H,T)$ that is symmetric in field $H$, and remains finite as $H\to 0$. The time-reversal violating signal suggests that, below $T_{co}$, vortices of one sign are spontaneously created to relieve interlayer phase frustration.
We propose a possible mechanism of the charge stripe order due to the next-nearest neighbor exchange interaction J' in the two-dimensional t-J model, based on the concept of the phase separation. We also calculate some hole correlation functions of the finite cluster of the model using the numerical diagonalization, to examine the realization of the mechanism. It is also found that the next-nearest neighbor hopping t' suppresses the stripe order induced by the present mechanism for t'<0, while it enhances for t'>0.
It is found that the carriers of the high-T_c cuprates are polaron-like "stripons" carrying charge and located in stripe-like inhomogeneities, "quasi-electrons" carrying charge and spin, and "svivons" carrying spin and lattice distortion. This is shown to result in the observed anomalous spectroscopic properties of the cuprates. The AF/stripe-like inhomogeneities result from the Bose condensation of the svivon field, and the speed of their dynamics is determined by the width of the double-svivon neutron-resonance peak. Pairing results from transitions between pair states of stripons and quasi-…
