A detailed study of charge transport in the paramagnetic phase of Ho0.8Lu0.2B12 strongly correlated antiferromagnet was carried out at temperatures 1.9-300 K in magnetic fields up to 80 kOe. Four mono-domain single crystals with different orientation of normal vectors to the lateral surface of Ho0.8Lu0.2B12 samples were investigated in order to establish the changes in Hall effect due to the anisotropy, induced by (i) the electronic phase separation (dynamic charge stripes) and (ii) formation of the disordered cage-glass state below 60 K. It was demonstrated that in magnetic fields above 40 kOe directed along the 001 and 110 axes in fcc crystals a considerable intrinsic anisotropic positive component Ranxy appears in addition to the ordinary negative Hall resistivity contribution. The relation Ranxy prop. Ranxx 1.7 was found between anomalous components of the resistivity tensor for H along 001 below 60 K, and the power law Ranxy prop. Ranxx 0.83 was detected for the orientation H along 110 at temperatures T below TS about 15 K. It is argued that below TS about 15 K the anomalous odd Ranxy(T) and even Ranxx(T) parts of the resistivity tensor may be interpreted in terms of formation of a large size clusters in the filamentary structure of fluctuating charges (stripes). We assume that these Ranxy(001) and Ranxy(110) components represent the intrinsic (Berry phase contribution) and extrinsic (skew scattering) mechanism, respectively. An additional ferromagnetic contribution to anomalous Hall effect (AHE) for both ordinary and anisotropic components in Hall signal was registered and attributed to the effect of magnetic polarization of 5d states (ferromagnetic nano-domains) in the conduction band of Ho0.8Lu0.2B12.
Using the determinant quantum Monte Carlo method, we investigate the metal-insulator transitions induced by the stripe of charge density in an interacting two-dimensional Dirac fermion system. The stripe will introduce the transport anisotropy and insulating intermediate phase into the system, accompanied by the change of band structure and a peak of density of states around Fermi energy. In the case of strong correlation, stripe exhibits competition with Coulomb repulsion through closing the energy gap and disrupting the magnetic order, and finally drives the system in Mott insulating phase b…
We investigate the spin-stripe mechanism responsible for the peculiar nanometer modulation of the incommensurate magnetic order that emerges between the vector-chiral and the spin-density-wave phase in the frustrated zigzag spin-1/2 chain compound $β$-TeVO$_4$. A combination of magnetic-torque, neutron-diffraction and spherical-neutron-polarimetry measurements is employed to determine the complex magnetic structures of all three ordered phases. Based on these results, we develop a simple phenomenological model, which exposes the exchange anisotropy as the key ingredient for the spin-stripe for…
We investigate the nature of the quantum Hall liquid in a half-filled second Landau level ($n=1$) as a function of band mass anisotropy using numerical exact diagonalization (ED) and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) methods. We find increasing the mass anisotropy induces a quantum phase transition from the Moore-Read state to a charge density wave state. By analyzing the energy spectrum, guiding center structure factors and by adding weak pinning potentials, we show that this charge density wave is a uni-directional quantum Hall stripe, which has a periodicity of a few magnetic leng…
The electron paramagnetic resonance is used to measure the single-ion anisotropy of Gd3+ ions in the pyrochlore structure of (Y{1-x}Gdx)2Ti2O7. A rather strong easy-plane type anisotropy is found. The anisotropy constant D is comparable to the exchange integral J in the prototype Gd2Ti2O7, D~0.75J and exceeds the dipolar energy scale. Physical implications of an easy-plane anisotropy for a pyrochlore antiferromagnet are considered. We calculate the magnetization curves at T=0 and discuss phase transitions in magnetic field.
Structural distortions in cuprate materials offer a microscopic origin for anisotropies in electron transport in the basal plane. Using a real-space Hartree-Fock approach, we consider the ground states of the anisotropic Hubbard (t_x \ne t_y) and t-J (t_x \ne t_y, J_x \ne J_y) models. Symmetrical but inhomogeneous (``polaronic'') charge structures in the isotropic models are altered even by rather small anisotropies to one-dimensional, stripe-like features. We find two distinct types of stripe, namely uniformly filled, antiphase domain walls and non-uniform, half-filled, in-phase ones. We char…
Magnetic behavior of BaMoP$_2$O$_8$ with the spatially anisotropic triangular arrangement of the $S=1$ Mo$^{4+}$ ions is explored using thermodynamic measurements, neutron diffraction, and density-functional band-structure calculations. A broad maximum in the magnetic susceptibility around 46\,K is followed by the stripe antiferromagnetic order with the propagation vector ${\mathbf k}=(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{2})$ formed below $T_N\simeq 21$ K. This stripe phase is triggered by a pronounced one-dimensionality of the spin lattice, where one of the in-plane couplings, $J_2\simeq 4.6$ me…
Recently, we demonstrated rigorously the stability of charge-stripe phases in quantum-particle systems that are described by extended Falicov-Kimball Hamiltonians, with the quantum hopping particles being either spinless fermions or hardcore bosons. In this paper, by means of the same methods, we show that any anisotropy of nearest-neighbor hopping eliminates the $π/2$-rotation degeneracy of the so called dimeric and axial-stripe phases and orients them in the direction of a weaker hopping. Moreover, due to the same anisotropy the obtained phase diagrams of fermions show a tendency to become s…
We have studied the magnetic torque in uranium monosulfide (US) single crystals to explore the magnetic anisotropy in this material. Uranium monosulfide crystallizes in cubic, NaCl-type of crystal structure and exhibits the largest magneto-crystalline anisotropy observed in cubic systems. By performing detailed torque measurements we observe a strongly anisotropic behavior in the paramagnetic phase due to crystal defects and quadrupolar pair interactions. Our studies also confirm the presence of a large anisotropy in the ferromagnetic state of the US system with the <100>, <111>, and <110> dir…
Direction-dependent anisotropic exchange is a common feature of magnetic systems with strong spin-orbit coupling. Here we study the effect of such exchange upon macroscopic magnetic anisotropy for a face-centered-cubic model. By several theoretical techniques, we show that, both in the paramagnetic and ordered phases, the magnetic anisotropy is induced by fluctuations. Moreover, the magnetic anisotropy differs in the paramagnetic and ordered phases: in the paramagnetic phase the susceptibility is maximum along the $\langle111\rangle$ directions, while the magnetic moments orient along $\langle…
We investigate the ground-state properties of a t2g-orbital Hubbard model on a triangular lattice at electron density 5.5 by using numerical techniques. There appear several types of paramagnetic phases, but we observe in common that one or two orbitals among three orbitals become relevant due to the effect of orbital arrangement. It is found that charge stripes stabilized by the nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction consist of antiferromagnetic/ferro-orbital chains for small Hund's coupling, while there occurs stripe charge ordering with ferromagnetic/antiferro-orbital chains for large Hund's …
The energy-level scheme and wave functions of the titanium ions in LaTiO$_{3}$ are calculated using crystal-field theory and spin-orbit coupling. The theoretically derived temperature dependence and anisotropy of the magnetic susceptibility agree well with experimental data obtained in an untwinned single crystal. The refined fitting procedure reveals an almost isotropic molecular field and a temperature dependence of the van Vleck susceptibility. The charge distribution of the 3d--electron on the Ti positions and the principle values of the quadrupole moments are derived and agree with NMR da…
Angle-resolved photoemission spectromicroscopy on IrTe2 reveals evolution of mesoscopic striped domains across its first order phase transition at about 280 K. The striped texture of the domains is characterized by a herringbone arrangement of the electronic anisotropy axes. Under further cooling down to 47 K, the striped domains evolve into trijunction domains with the electronic anisotropy in three directions. Each domain harbors quasi one-dimensional surface bands forming Fermi arcs with peculiar spin polarization. The Fermi arc corresponds to an edge state of the two-dimensional bulk elect…
We report $^{139}$La nuclear magnetic resonance studies performed on a La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ single crystal. The data show that the structural phase transitions (high-temperature tetragonal $\rightarrow$ low-temperature orthorhombic $\rightarrow$ low-temperature tetragonal phase) are of the displacive type in this material. The $^{139}$La spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ sharply upturns at the charge-ordering temperature $T_\text{CO}$ = 54 K, indicating that charge order triggers the slowing down of spin fluctuations. Detailed temperature and field dependencies of the $T_1^{-1…
We carried out inelastic neutron scattering experiments on a buckled honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet Ba$_{2}$NiTeO$_{6}$ exhibiting a stripe structure at a low temperature. Magnetic excitations are observed in the energy range of $\hbar ω\lesssim 10$ meV having an anisotropy gap of 2 meV at 2 K. We perform spin-wave calculations to identify the spin model. The obtained microscopic parameters are consistent with the location of the stripe structure in the classical phase diagram. Furthermore, the Weiss temperature independently estimated from a bulk magnetic susceptibility is consistent with …
By using the extraordinary Hall effect in SrRuO3 films we performed sensitive measurements of the paramagnetic susceptibility in this itinerant ferromagnet, from Tc (~ 150 K) to 300 K. These measurements, combined with measurements of magnetoresistance, reveal that the susceptibility, which is almost isotropic at 300 K, becomes highly anisotropic as the temperature is lowered, diverging along a single crystallographic direction in the vicinity of Tc. The results provide a striking manifestation of the effect of exceptionally large magnetocrystalline anisotropy in the paramagnetic state of a 4d…
In a 2D electron system in (001) GaAs/AlGaAs upon filling high Landau levels, it was recently observed a new class of collective states, which are recognized now to relate to the spontaneous formation of a charge density wave (``stripe phase''). Here we analyze one of the possible mechanisms of the stripe pinning along the crystallographic direction [110]--the native effective mass anisotropy of 2D electrons. It is shown that for a symmetric quantum well this anisotropy is a linear function of applied perpendicular-to-plane electric field. So, if it is the anisotropy that defines the direction…
We report unexpected behaviour in a family of Cu spin- 1/2 systems, in which an apparent gap in the low energy magneto-optical absorption spectrum opens at low temperature. This previously unreported collective phenomenon arises at temperatures where the energy of the dominant exchange interaction exceeds the thermal energy. Simulations of the observed shifts in electron paramagnetic resonance spectral weight, which include spin anisotropy, reproduce this behavior yielding the magnitude of the spin anisotropy in these compounds.
The model strongly correlated electron system Ho0.8Lu0.2B12 which demonstrates a cooperative Jahn-Teller instability of the boron sub-lattice in combination with rattling modes of Ho(Lu) ions, dynamic charge stripes and unusual antiferromagnetic (AF) ground state has been studied in detail at low temperatures by magnetoresistance, magnetization and heat capacity measurements. Based on received results it turns out that the angular H-fi-T magnetic phase diagrams of this non-equilibrium AF metal can be reconstructed in the form of a Maltese cross. The dramatic AF ground state symmetry lowering o…
The orientation of a chiral magnetic domain wall in a racetrack determines its dynamical properties. In equilibrium, magnetic domain walls are expected to be oriented perpendicular to the stripe axis. We demonstrate the appearance of a unidirectional domain wall tilt in out-of-plane magnetized stripes with biaxial anisotropy and Dzyaloshinskii--Moriya interaction (DMI). The tilt is a result of the interplay between the in-plane easy-axis anisotropy and DMI. We show that the additional anisotropy and DMI prefer different domain wall structure: anisotropy links the magnetization azimuthal angle …
We consider the model of strongly-correlated system of electrons described by an extended Falicov-Kimball Hamiltonian where the stability of some axial and diagonal striped phases was proved. Introducing a next-nearest-neighbor hopping, small enough not to destroy the striped structure, we examine rigorously how the presence of the next-nearest-neighbor hopping anisotropy reduces the $π/2$-rotation degeneracy of the diagonal-striped phase. The effect appears to be similar to that in the case of anisotropy of the nearest-neighbor hopping: the stripes are oriented in the direction of the weaker …
We use polarized neutron scattering to demonstrate that in-plane spin excitations in electron doped superconducting BaFe1.904Ni0.096As2 (Tc=19.8 K) change from isotropic to anisotropic in the tetragonal phase well above the antiferromagnetic (AF) ordering and tetragonal-to-orthorhombic lattice distortion temperatures (Tn=Ts=33 K) without an uniaxial pressure. While the anisotropic spin excitations are not sensitive to the AF order and tetragonal-to-orthorhombic lattice distortion, superconductivity induces further anisotropy for spin excitations along the [1,1,0] and [1,-1,0] directions. These…
Implementation of antiferromagnetic compounds as active elements in spintronics has been hindered by their insensitive nature against external perturbations which causes difficulties in switching among different antiferromagnetic spin configurations. Electrically-controllable strain gradient can become a key parameter to tune the antiferromagnetic states of multiferroic materials. We have discovered a correlation between an electrically-written straight-stripe mixed-phase boundary and an in-plane antiferromagnetic spin axis in highly-elongated La-5%-doped BiFeO$_{3}$ thin films by performing p…
We use neutron polarization analysis to study temperature dependence of the spin excitation anisotropy in BaFe$_2$As$_2$, which has a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural distortion at $T_s$ and antiferromagnetic (AF) phase transition at $T_N$ with ordered moments along the orthorhombic $a$-axis below $T_s\approx T_N\approx 136$ K. In the paramagnetic tetragonal state at 160 K, spin excitations are isotropic in spin space with $M_a=M_b=M_c$, where $M_a$, $M_b$, and $M_c$ are spin excitations polarized along the $a$, $b$, and $c$-axis directions of the orthorhombic lattice, respectively. On co…
Influence of two type of spin structures on the form of the Fermi surface (FS) and a photoemission intensity map is studied for t-t'-U Hubbard model. Mean field calculations are done for the stripe phase and for the spiral spin structure. It is shown, that unlike a case of electron doping, the hole-doped models are unstable with respect to formation of such structures. The pseudogap anisotropies are different for h- and e- doping. In accordance with ARPES data for La2SrxCuO4 the stripe phase is characterized by quasi-one-dimensional segments of FS at k=(π,0) and by suppression of spectral weig…
We investigate the manifestation of the stripes in the in-plane resistivity anisotropy in untwinned single crystals of La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} (x = 0.02 - 0.04) and YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y} (y = 6.35 - 7.0). It is found that both systems show strongly temperature-dependent in-plane anisotropy in the lightly hole-doped region and that the anisotropy in YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{y} grows with decreasing y below about 6.60 despite the decreasing orthorhombicity, which gives most direct evidence that electrons self-organize into a macroscopically anisotropic state. The transport is found to be easier along the dire…
Magnetic textures in the ferromagnetic phases of La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ for 0.15 $< x <$ 0.30 have been investigated by Lorentz microscopy combined with small-angle electron diffraction experiments. Various types of magnetic textures characterized by stripe, plate-shaped, and cylindrical (magnetic bubble) domains were found. Two distinct types of magnetic stripe domains appeared in the orthorhombic structure with an inversion symmetry of La$_{0.825}$Sr$_{0.175}$MnO$_3$, depending significantly on magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Based on in-situ observations as functions of temperature and the …
We have studied magnetic correlations in several compositions of stripe-ordered La2-xSrxNiO4. In this paper we show how polarized-neutron scattering has helped uncover important features of the magnetic ordering and spin dynamics. In particular, polarization analysis has enabled us (1) to characterize a spin reorientation transition, (2) to identify anisotropy gaps in the spin excitation spectrum, and (3) to investigate an anomalous dip in the spin-wave intensity suggestive of coupling between collective spin and charge excitations.
Stripe phases, in which the rotational symmetry of charge density is spontaneously broken, occur in many strongly correlated systems with competing interactions. One representative example is the copper-oxide superconductors, where stripe order is thought to be relevant to the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity. Identifying and studying the stripe phases in conventional strongly correlated systems are, however, challenging due to the complexity and limited tunability of these materials. Here we uncover stripe phases in WSe2/WS2 moiré superlattices with continuously gate-tunable ch…
We study the phase diagram of $ν_e=7/3$ state in the $N=1$ Landau level in the presence of band mass anisotropy. Using density matrix renormalization group on an infinite cylinder geometry, we find a continuous transition from the topologically ordered Laughlin fractional quantum Hall state to a stripe phase with a period of approximately five and a half magnetic lengths. The transition is driven by the condensation of the magnetoroton mode which becomes gapless at the critical point. We interpret the transition within the composite-boson theory as the onset of stripe order in a superfluid bac…
Using the Boltzmann weights of classical Statistical Mechanics vertex models we define a new class of Tensor Product Ansatzs for 2D quantum lattice systems, characterized by a strong anisotropy, which gives rise to stripe like structures. In the case of the six vertex model we compute exactly, in the thermodynamic limit, the norm of the ansatz and other observables. Employing this ansatz we study the phase diagram of a Hamiltonian given by the sum of XXZ Hamiltonians along the legs coupled by an Ising term. Finally, we suggest a connection between the six and eight-vertex Anisotropic Tensor Pr…
We determine the quantum phase diagram of a two-dimensional bosonic t-Jz model as a function of the lattice anisotropy gamma, using a quantum Monte Carlo loop algorithm. We show analytically that the low-energy sectors of the bosonic and the fermionic t-Jz models become equivalent in the limit of small gamma. In this limit, the ground state represents a static stripe phase characterized by a non-zero value of a topological order parameter. This phase remains up to intermediate values of gamma, where there is a quantum phase transition to a phase-segregated state or a homogeneous superfluid wit…
We present a study of the in-plane and out-of-plane magnetoresistance (MR) in heavily-underdoped, antiferromagnetic YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}, which reveals a variety of striking features. The in-plane MR demonstrates a "d-wave"-like anisotropy upon rotating the magnetic field H within the ab plane. With decreasing temperature below 20-25 K the system acquires memory: exposing a crystal to the magnetic field results in a persistent in-plane resistivity anisotropy. The overall features can be explained by assuming that the CuO_2 planes contain a developed array of stripes accommodating the doped holes, …
The anisotropy of the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_{1}$ of $^{75}$As was investigated in the iron-based superconductor LaFeAs(O$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$) ($x = 0.07, 0.11$ and 0.14) as well as LaFeAsO. While the temperature dependence of the normal-state $1/T_1T$ in the superconducting (SC) $x = 0.07$ is different from that in the SC $x = 0.11$, their anisotropy of $1/T_1$, $R \equiv (1/T_{1})_{H \parallel ab}/(1/T_{1})_{H \parallel c}$ in the normal state is almost the same ($\simeq$ 1.5). The observed anisotropy is ascribable to the presence of the local stripe correlations with $Q = (π, …
The effects of the ring-exchange Hamiltonian H_3 = J_3 sum_{<ijk>} (S_i * S_j) (S_i * S_k) on the triangular lattice are studied using classical Monte Carlo simulations. Each spin $S_i$ is treated as a classical XY spin taking on Q equally spaced angles (Q-states clock model). For Q=6, a first-order transition into a stripe-ordered phase preempts the macroscopic classical degeneracy. For Q > 6, a finite window of critical phase exists, intervening between the low-temperature stripe phase and the high-temperature paramagnetic phase.
The effect of uniaxial pressure on superconductivity was examined for a high-Tc cuprate La1.64Eu0.2Sr0.16CuO4, which is located at the boundary between the superconducting and stripe phases. We found remarkably large anisotropy of the uniaxial pressure effect not only between the in-plane and out-of-plane pressures but also within the CuO2-plane. When the pressure is applied along the tetragonal [110] direction, we found the largest pressure effect ever observed in cuprates, dTc/dP - 2.5 K/kbar, while the change of Tc was not appreciable when applied along [100]. This substantial in-plane anis…
We study the zero-temperature phase diagram of the 2D quantum $J_{1}^{XXZ}$--$J_{2}^{XXZ}$ spin-1/2 anisotropic Heisenberg model on the square lattice. In particular, the effects of the anisotropy $Δ$ on the $z$-aligned Néel and (collinear) stripe states, as well as on the $xy$-planar-aligned Néel and collinear stripe states, are examined. All four of these quasiclassical states are chosen in turn as model states on top of which we systematically include the quantum correlations using a coupled cluster method analysis carried out to very high orders. We find strong evidence for two {\it quantu…
A recent study has revealed that the low carrier density electron gas (2DEG) induced at the interface of EuO and (111) KTaO$_3$ exhibits a broken symmetry phase with a strong in-plane anisotropy of the resistivity. We present a minimal tight binding model of this (111) 2DEG, including the large spin-orbit coupling from the Ta ions, which reveals a hexagonal Fermi surface with a highly enhanced 2$k_F$ electronic susceptibility. We argue that repulsive electronic interactions, together with a ferromagnetic EuO substrate, favor a magnetic stripe instability leading to a partially gapped Fermi sur…
Based on the mean-field method applied either to the extended single-band Hubbard model or to the single-band Peierls-Hubbard Hamiltonian we study the stability of both site-centered and bond-centered charge domain walls. The difference in energy between these phases is found to be small. Therefore, moderate perturbations to the pure Hubbard model, such as next nearest hopping, lattice anisotropy, or coupling to the lattice, induce phase transitions, shown in the corresponding phase diagrams. In addition, we determine for stable phases charge and magnetization densities, double occupancy, kine…
SrRuO3 is an itinerant ferromagnet with orthorhombic structure and uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy - features expected to yield resistivity anisotropy. Here we explore changes in the resistivity anisotropy of epitaxial SrRuO3 films due to induced magnetization in the paramagnetic state by using the planar Hall effect. We find that the effect of the induced magnetization on the in-plane anisotropy is strongly angular dependent, and we provide a full description of this behavior at 160 K for induced magnetization in the (001) plane.
We use low temperature near-field optical spectroscopy to image the electron density distribution in the plane of a high mobility GaAs quantum well. We find that the electrons are not randomly distributed in the plane, but rather form narrow stripes (width smaller than 150 nm) of higher electron density. The stripes are oriented along the [1-10 ] crystal direction, and are arranged in a quasi-periodic structure. We show that elongated structural mounds, which are intrinsic to molecular beam epitaxy, are responsible for the creation of this electron density texture.
Precise angle-resolved magnetoresistance and magnetization measurements have revealed (i) strong charge transport and magnetic anisotropy and (ii) emergence of a huge number of magnetic phases in the ground state of TmB12 antiferromagnetic metal with fcc crystal structure and dynamic charge stripes. By analyzing the angular H-fi magnetic phase diagrams reconstructed from experimental angle-resolved magnetoresistance and magnetization data we argue that the symmetry lowering is a consequence of suppression of the indirect Ruderman- Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) exchange along 110 directions betwe…
Recently, a strongly enhanced xy anisotropy of magnetic excitations was observed in YBa_2Cu_3O_y (YBCO_y) with y=6.45 and Tc=35 K [Science 319, 597 (2008)]. Unlike the observation in YBCO_6.6 and YBCO_6.85, the anisotropy grows to be pronounced at lower temperature and at lower energy, and is not suppressed by the onset of superconductivity. We propose that the effect of singlet pairing is substantially reduced in YBCO_6.45. This reduction concomitantly enhances an order competing with singlet pairing, a strong tendency of the so-called d-wave Pomeranchuk instability, leading to the magnetic e…
We attempt to access the regime of strong coupling between charge carriers and transverse dynamics of an isolated conducting ``stripe'', such as those found in cuprate superconductors. A stripe is modeled as a partially doped domain wall in an antiferromagnet (AF), introduced in the context of two different models: the t-J model with strong Ising anisotropy, and the Hubbard model in the Hartree-Fock approximation. The domain walls with a given linear charge density are supported artificially by boundary conditions. In both models we find a regime of parameters where doped holes lose their spin…
We report the nanoscale imaging of Ti-doped bilayer calcium ruthenates during the Mott metal-insulator transition by microwave impedance microscopy. Different from a typical first-order phase transition where coexistence of the two terminal phases takes place, a new metallic stripe phase oriented along the in-plane crystalline axes emerges inside both the G-type antiferromagnetic insulating state and paramagnetic metallic state. The effect of this electronic state can be observed in macroscopic measurements, allowing us to construct a phase diagram that takes into account the energetically com…
We study the effect of perpendicular single-ion anisotropy, $-As_{\text{z}}^2$, on the ground-state structure and finite-temperature properties of a two-dimensional magnetic nanodot in presence of a dipolar interaction of strength $D$. By a simulated annealing Monte Carlo method, we show that in the ground state a vortex core perpendicular to the nanodot plane emerges already in the range of moderate anisotropy values above a certain threshold level. In the giant-anisotropy regime the vortex structure is superseded by a stripe domain structure with stripes of alternate domains perpendicular to…
Electronic structure of stripe ordered La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_{4}$ is investigated. The system with x=1/3 is insulator, in LSDA+U calculations, and shows charge and spin stripe, consistent with the experimental results. Highly correlated system of x=1/2 is studied by using exact diagonalization of multi-orbital many body Hamiltonian derived from LDA calculations and including on-site and inter-site Coulomb interactions. The fluctuation of the residual spin on Ni$^{3+}$ (hole) site couples with the charge fluctuation between Ni$^{3+}$ and Ni$^{2+}$ states and this correlation lowers the total e…
End-point singularity of the $XY$-paramagnetic phase boundary for the $(2+1)$D $S=1$ square-lattice $J_1$-$J_2$ $XY$ model with the single-ion anisotropy
In recent experiments, external anisotropy has been a useful tool to tune different phases and study their competitions. In this paper, we look at the quantum Hall charge density wave states in the $N=2$ Landau level. Without anisotropy, there are two first-order phase transitions between the Wigner crystal, the $2$-electron bubble phase, and the stripe phase. By adding mass anisotropy, our analytical and numerical studies show that the $2$-electron bubble phase disappears and the stripe phase significantly enlarges its domain in the phase diagram. Meanwhile, a regime of stripe crystals that m…
Variational studies of the t-J model on the square lattice based on infinite projected-entangled pair states (iPEPS) confirm an extremely close competition between a uniform d-wave superconducting state and different stripe states. The site-centered stripe with an in-phase d-wave order has an equal or only slightly lower energy than the stripe with anti-phase d-wave order. The optimal stripe filling is not constant but increases with J/t. A nematic anisotropy reduces the pairing amplitude and the energies of stripe phases are lowered relative to the uniform state with increasing nematicity.
$β$-TeVO$_4$ is a frustrated spin 1/2 zig-zag chain system, where spin-density-wave (SDW), vector chiral (VC)and an exotic dynamic spin-stripe phase compete at low temperatures. Here we use torque magnetometry to study the anisotropy of these phases in magnetic fields of up to 5 T. Our results show that the magnetic-field-induced spin reorientation occurs in the SDW and in the spin stripe phases for $μ_0 H \geq 2$~T. The observed spin reorientation is a new element of the anisotropic phase diagram for the field directions in the $ac$ and $a^*b$ crystallographic planes. The presented results sho…
Unique features of non-magnetic insulator phase are shown, and phase diagram for t-t' Hubbard model on square lattice is presented. Using the path-integral renormalization group method, we find antiferromagnetic phase for small next-nearest neighbor transfer t' and stripe (or collinear) phase for large t' in the Mott insulating region of strong on site interaction U. For intermediate t'/t~ 0.7 at large U/t>7, we find longer-period antiferromagnetic insulator phase with 2*4 structure. In the Mott insulating region, we also find quantum spin liquid (in other words, non-magnetic insulator) phase …
MnAs films grown on GaAs (001) exhibit a progressive transition between hexagonal (ferromagnetic) and orthorhombic (paramagnetic) phases at wide temperature range instead of abrupt transition during the first-order phase transition. The coexistence of two phases is favored by the anisotropic strain arising from the constraint on the MnAs films imposed by the substrate. This phase coexistence occurs in ordered arrangement alternating periodic terrace steps. We present here a method to study the surface morphology throughout this transition by means of specular and diffuse scattering of soft x-r…
We report dc magnetic measurements on YbCu$_2$Si$_2$ at pressures above 10 GPa using a miniature ceramic anvil cell. YbCu$_2$Si$_2$ shows a pressure-induced transition from the non-magnetic to a magnetic phase at 8 GPa. We find a spontaneous dc magnetization in the pressure-induced phase above 9.4 GPa. The pressure dependence of the ferromagnetic transition temperature T_C and the spontaneous magnetic moment m_0 at 2.0 K have been determined. The value of m_0 in the present macroscopic measurement is less than half of that determined via Mossbauer experiment. The difference may be attributed t…
We consider stripe formation in quantum Hall systems at integer filling factors. We use Hartree-Fock calculations to obtain the phase diagram of bilayer quantum Hall systems at $ν=4n+1$ in a tilted magnetic field. We derive and analyze an effective low energy theory for the stripe phases which may be present in such systems. We discuss the possibility of stripe formation in wide well systems in a tilted magnetic field and suggest that the resistance anisotropy, observed recently by W. Pan et.al. [phys. Rev. B 64 (2001) 121305], may be due to the existence of a skyrmion stripe phase.
We propose that the transport anisotropy observed in half-filled high Landau levels ($N \geq 2$) is caused by the space noncommutativity effect, namely the Heisenberg uncertainty relation between the spatial coordinates of electrons. The stripe corresponds to a limit that one coordinate of a large number of particles is fixed at a certain value while its conjugate coordinate is completely uncertain. We make a renormalization group analysis and find that the noncommutativity effect is able to drive the stripe formation only at half-fillings $ν= 9/2, 11/2, 13/2,$ etc., in agreement with experime…
The effects of the application of a magnetic field on the diagonal stripe spin-glass phase is studied in lightly doped La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 (x=0.014 and 0.024). With increasing magnetic field, the magnetic elastic intensity at the diagonal incommensurate (DIC) positions (1,\pmε,0) decreases as opposed to the increase seen in superconducting samples. This diminution in intensity with increasing magnetic field originates from a spin reorientation transition, which is driven by the antisymmetric exchange term in the spin Hamiltonian. On the other hand, the transition temperature, the incommensurabil…
The exotic normal state of iron chalcogenide superconductor FeSe, which exhibits vanishing magnetic order and possesses an electronic nematic order, triggered extensive explorations of its magnetic ground state. To understand its novel properties, we study the ground state of a highly frustrated spin-$1$ system with bilinear-biquadratic interactions using unbiased large-scale density matrix renormalization group. Remarkably, with increasing biquadratic interactions, we find a paramagnetic phase between Néel and stripe magnetic ordered phases. We identify this phase as a candidate of nematic qu…
Magnetic anisotropy (MA) is one of the most important material properties for modern spintronic devices. Conventional manipulation of the intrinsic MA, i.e. magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA), typically depends upon crystal symmetry. Extrinsic control over the MA is usually achieved by introducing shape anisotropy or exchange bias from another magnetically ordered material. Here we demonstrate a pathway to manipulate MA of 3d transition metal oxides (TMOs) by digitally inserting non-magnetic 5d TMOs with pronounced spin-orbit coupling (SOC). High quality superlattices comprised of ferromagnet…
We report novel features in the in-plane magnetoresistance (MR) of heavily underdoped YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}, which unveil a developed ``charged stripe'' structure in this system. One of the striking features is an anisotropy of the MR with a "d-wave" symmetry upon rotating the magnetic field H within the ab plane, which is caused by the rotation of the stripes with the external field. With decreasing temperature, a hysteresis shows up below ~20 K in the MR curve as a function of H and finally below 10 K the magnetic-field application produces a persistent change in the resistivity. This "memory eff…
