Let $G$ and $A$ be objects of a finitely cocomplete homological category $\mathbb C$. We define a notion of an (internal) action of $G$ of $A$ which is functorially equivalent with a point in $\mathbb C$ over $G$, i.e. a split extension in $\mathbb C$ with kernel $A$ and cokernel $G$. This notion and its study are based on a preliminary investigation of cross-effects of functors in a general categorical context. These also allow us to define higher categorical commutators. We show that any proper subobject of an object $E$ (i.e., a kernel of some map on $E$ in $\mathbb C$) admits a "conjugation" action of $E$, generalizing the conjugation action of $E$ on itself defined by Bourn and Janelidze. If $\mathbb C$ is semi-abelian, we show that for subobjects $X$, $Y$ of some object $A$, $X$ is proper in the supremum of $X$ and $Y$ if and only if $X$ is stable under the restriction to $Y$ of the conjugation action of $A$ on itself. This amounts to an elementary proof of Bourn and Janelidze's functorial equivalence between points over $G$ in $\mathbb C$ and algebras over a certain monad $\mathbb T_G$ on $\mathbb C$. The two axioms of such an algebra can be replaced by three others, in terms of cross-effects, two of which generalize the usual properties of an action of one group on another.
We show that each rigid monoidal category A over a field defines a family of universal tensor categories, which together classify all faithful monoidal functors from A to tensor categories. Each of the universal tensor categories classifies monoidal functors of a given 'homological kernel' and can be realised as a sheaf category, not necessarily on A. This yields a theory of 'local abelian envelope' which completes the notion of monoidal abelian envelopes.
Grandis's non-abelian homological algebra generalizes standard homological algebra in abelian categories to \textit{homological categories}, which are a broader class of categories including for example the category of lattices and Galois connections. Here, we prove that if $\mathsf{C}$ is any category with an ideal of null morphisms with respect to which (co)kernels exist, then the arrow category of $\mathsf{C}$ is a homological category. This broadens the applicability of Grandis's framework substantially. In particular, one can form the homology of chain complexes in $\mathsf{C}$ by taking …
We prove that any faithful Frobenius functor between abelian categories preserves the Gorenstein projective dimension of objects. Consequently, it preserves and reflects Gorenstein projective objects. We give conditions on when a Frobenius functor preserves the stable categories of Gorenstein projective objects, the singularity categories and the Gorenstein defect categories, respectively. In the appendix, we give a direct proof of the following known result: for an abelian category with enough projectives and injectives, its global Gorenstein projective dimension coincides with its global Gor…
This survey article on relative homological algebra in bivariant K-thoery is mainly intended for readers with a background knowledge in triangulated categories. We briefly recall the general theory of relative homological algebra in triangulated categories and latter specialize it to the non-equivariant and the equivariant bivariant K-thoery, where the actions on C*-algebras is by a finite cyclic group. We conclude by the explicit computation of the universal abelian invariant for separable C*-algebras with the action of $\mathbb{Z}/4$ by automorphisms.
Extriangulated categories were introduced by Nakaoka and Palu as a simultaneous generalization of exact categories and triangulated categories. In this paper, we introduce and develop an analogous theory of Auslander-Buchweitz approximations for extriangulated categories. We establish the existence of precovers pand preenvelopesq and obtain characterizations of relative homological dimensions, which are based on certain subcategories under finiteness of resolutions. Finally, we give a description of cotorsion pairs on extriangulated categories under some conditions, and provide a characterizat…
In this work, we develop the theory of $k$-idempotent ideals in the setting of dualizing varieties. Several results given previously in \cite{APG} by M. Auslander, M. I. Platzeck, and G. Todorov are extended to this context. Given an ideal $\mathcal{I}$ (which is the trace of a projective module), we construct a canonical recollement which is the analog to a well-known recollement in categories of modules over artin algebras. Moreover, we study the homological properties of the categories involved in such a recollement. Consequently, we find conditions on the ideal $\mathcal{I}$ to obtain quas…
Let $(\mathcal{C},\mathbb{E},\mathfrak{s})$ be an extriangulated category with a proper class $ξ$ of $\mathbb{E}$-triangles. The authors introduced and studied $ξ$-$\mathcal{G}$projective and $ξ$-$\mathcal{G}$injective in \cite{HZZ}. In this paper, we discuss Gorenstein homological dimensions for extriangulated categories. More precisely, we first give some characterizations of $ξ$-$\mathcal{G}$projective dimension by using derived functors on $\mathcal{C}$. Second, let $\mathcal{P}(ξ)$ (resp. $\mathcal{I}(ξ)$) be a generating (resp. cogenerating) subcategory of $\mathcal{C}$. We show that the…
In the context of regular unital categories we introduce an intrinsic version of the notion of a Schreier split epimorphism, originally considered for monoids. We show that such split epimorphisms satisfy the same homological properties as Schreier split epimorphisms of monoids do. This gives rise to new examples of S-protomodular categories, and allows us to better understand the homological behaviour of monoids from a categorical perspective.
Given a rigid tensor-triangulated category and a vector space valued homological functor for which the Künneth isomorphism holds, we construct a universal graded-Tannakian category through which the given homological functor factors. We use this to (unconditionally) construct graded-Tannakian categories of pure motives associated to a fixed Weil cohomology theory, with a fiber functor realizing the given cohomology theory. For $\ell$-adic cohomology and a ground field which is algebraic over a finite field, this category is Tannakian. In this case, we obtain in particular motivic Galois groups…
