The Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect has a distinct spectral signature that allows its separation from fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and foregrounds. Using CMB anisotropies measured in Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe's five-year maps, we constrain the SZ fluctuations at large, degree angular scales corresponding to multipoles in the range from 10 to 400. We provide upper bounds on SZ fluctuations at multipoles greater than 50, and find evidence for a hemispherically asymmetric signal at ten degrees angular scales. The amplitude of the detected signal cannot be easily explained with the allowed number density and temperature of electrons in the Galactic halo. We have failed to explain the excess signal as a residual from known Galactic foregrounds or instrumental uncertainties such as 1/f-noise.
Angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies is one of the most important on characteristics of the Universe such as its geometry and total density. Using flat sky approximation and Fourier analysis, we estimate the angular power spectrum from an ensemble of least foreground-contaminated square patches from WMAP W and V frequency band map. This method circumvents the issue of foreground cleaning and that of breaking orthogonality in spherical harmonic analysis due to masking out the bright Galactic plane region, thereby rendering a direct measurement…
We use a Quadratic Maximum Likelihood (QML) method to estimate the angular power spectrum of the cross-correlation between cosmic microwave background and large scale structure maps as well as their individual auto-spectra. We describe our implementation of this method and demonstrate its accuracy on simulated maps. We apply this optimal estimator to WMAP 7-year and NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) data and explore the robustness of the angular power spectrum estimates obtained by the QML method. With the correction of the declination systematics in NVSS, we can safely use most of the information co…
A Quadratic Maximum Likelihood (QML) estimator is applied to the WMAP 5 year low resolution maps to compute the CMB angular power spectra at large scales for both temperature and polarization. Estimates and error bars for the six angular power spectra are provided and compared, when possible, to those obtained by the WMAP team, without finding any inconsistency. The conditional likelihood slices are also computed for the $C_{\ell}$ of all the six power spectra from $\ell =2$ to 10 through a pixel based likelihood code. Both the codes treat the covariance for $(T,Q,U)$ in a single matrix withou…
We constrain the rotation angle $α$ of the linear polarization of CMB photons using the large angular scale (up to $\sim 4^\circ$) signal in WMAP 7 year data. At these scales, the CMB polarization pattern probes mostly the reionization era. A genuine rotation may be interpreted as cosmological birefringence, which is a well known tracer of new physics, through the breakdown of fundamental symmetries. Our analysis provides $α= -1.6^{\circ} \pm 1.7^{\circ} (3.4^{\circ})$ at 68% (95%) C.L. for the multipoles range $Δ\ell = 2-47$ not including an instrumental systematic uncertainty that the WMAP t…
We investigate some of the asymmetries reported in the CMB temperature angular distribution considering the ΛCDM model in the 3, 5 and 7 year WMAP data. We aim to analyze the 4 quadrants of the ILC CMB maps using 3 Galactic cuts: the WMAP KQ85 mask, a |b|<10 degrees and the WMAP KQ85 mask +|b|<10 degrees Galactic cuts. We used the two-point angular correlation function in the WMAP maps for each of their quadrants. The same procedure was done for 1000 Monte Carlo simulations that were produced using the WMAP team ΛCDM best-fit power spectrum. We also changed the quadrupole and octopole amplitud…
We estimate the power spectra of CMB temperature anisotropy in localized regions on the sky using the WMAP 7-year data. Here, we report that the north hat and the south hat regions at the high Galactic latitude (|b| >= 30 deg) show anomaly in the power spectrum amplitude around the third peak, which is statistically significant up to 3 sigma. We try to figure out the cause of the observed anomaly by analyzing the low Galactic latitude (|b|< 30 deg) regions where the galaxy contamination is expected to be stronger, and regions that are weakly or strongly dominated by the WMAP instrument noise. …
In the context of the study of the ISW, we revisit the angular cross correlation of WMAP CMB data with the NVSS radio survey. We compute 2-point cross functions between the two surveys in real and in Fourier space, paying particular attention on the dependence of results on the flux of NVSS radio sources, the angular scales where correlations arise and the comparison with theoretical expectations. We reproduce previous results that claim an excess of correlation in the angular correlation function (ACF), and we also find some (low significance) similarity between the CMB and radio galaxy data …
Within the context of the concordance model of cosmology we test the consistency of the angular power spectrum data from WMAP and Planck looking for possible systematics. The best fit concordance model to each observation is used as a mean function along with a Crossing function with an orthogonal basis to fit the data from the other observation searching for any possible deviation. We report that allowing an overall amplitude shift in the observed angular power spectra of the two observations, the best fit mean function from Planck data is consistent with WMAP 9 year data but the best fit mea…
We present a CMB large-scale polarization dataset obtained by combining WMAP Ka, Q and V with Planck 70 GHz maps. We employ the legacy frequency maps released by the WMAP and Planck collaborations and perform our own Galactic foreground mitigation technique, which relies on Planck 353 GHz for polarized dust and on Planck 30 GHz and WMAP K for polarized synchrotron. We derive a single, optimally-noise-weighted, low-residual-foreground map and the accompanying noise covariance matrix. These are shown, through $χ^2$ analysis, to be robust over an ample collection of Galactic masks. We use this da…
The recent paper by Berntsen and Hansen devoted to the analysis of elliptic-ity of anisotropies in CMB maps, distorts some statements of previous studies, misses relevant papers, along with superficial comparison of the results (in part of definitions, the role of noise, angular resolution, model parameters).
This paper provides full sky maps of foreground emission in all WMAP channels, with very low residual contamination from the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies and controlled level of instrumental noise. Foreground maps are obtained by subtraction of a properly filtered CMB map, obtained from linear combinations of needlet-based representations of all WMAP observations and of a 100-micron map. The error in the reconstructed foreground maps on large scales is significantly lower than the original error due to CMB contamination, while remaining of the order of the original WMAP noise…
We quantify the contamination from polarized diffuse Galactic synchrotron and thermal dust emissions to the B-modes of the CMB anisotropies on the degree angular scale, using data from the Planck and WMAP satellites. We compute power spectra of foreground polarized emissions in 352 circular sky patches located at Galactic latitude |b|>20°, each of which covering a fraction of the sky of about 1.5%. We make use of the spectral properties derived from Planck and WMAP data to extrapolate, in frequency, the amplitude of synchrotron and thermal dust B-modes spectra in the multipole bin centered at …
The Parity symmetry of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) pattern as seen by WMAP 7 is tested jointly in temperature and polarization at large angular scale. A Quadratic Maximum Likelihood (QML) estimator is applied to the WMAP 7 year low resolution maps to compute all polarized CMB angular power spectra. The analysis is supported by 10000 realistic Monte-Carlo realizations. We confirm the previously reported Parity anomaly for TT in the range $δ\ell=[2,22]$ at $> 99.5%$ C.L.. No anomalies have been detected in TT for a wider $\ell$ range (up to $\ell_{max}=40$). No violations have been fou…
We have investigated the angular correlation in the recent CMB data. In addition to the known large-angle correlation anomaly, we find the lack of correlation at small angles with high statistical significance. We have investigated various non-cosmological contamination and additionally WMAP team's simulated data. However, we have not found a definite cause. In the angular power spectrum of WMAP data, there exist anomalous odd-parity preference at low multipoles. Noting the equivalence between the power spectrum and the correlation, we have investigated the association between the lack of larg…
The spectral variation of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) as observed by WMAP was tested using foreground reduced WMAP5 data, by producing subtraction maps at the 1$^\circ$ angular resolution between the two cosmological bands of V and W, for masked sky areas that avoid the Galactic disk. The resulting $V-W$ map revealed a non-acoustic signal over and above the WMAP5 pixel noise, with two main properties. Firstly, it possesses quadrupole power at the $\approx$ 1 $μK$ level which may be attributed to foreground residuals. Second, it fluctuates also at all values of $\ell >$ 2, especially …
We search for planar deviations of statistical isotropy in the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data by applying a recently introduced angular-planar statistics both to full-sky and to masked temperature maps, including in our analysis the effect of the residual foreground contamination and systematics in the foreground removing process as sources of error. We confirm earlier findings that full-sky maps exhibit anomalies at the planar ($l$) and angular ($\ell$) scales $(l,\ell)=(2,5),(4,7),$ and $(6,8)$, which seem to be due to unremoved foregrounds since this features are present i…
We present measurements of the clustering of hot and cold patches in the microwave background sky as measured from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) five-year data. These measurements are compared with theoretical predictions which assume that the cosmological signal obeys Gaussian statistics. We find significant differences from the simplest Gaussian-based prediction. However, the measurements are sensitive to the fact that the noise is spatially inhomogeneous (e.g., because different parts of the sky were observed for different lengths of time). We show how to account for this …
Using an optimal estimator for the CMB Angular Power Spectrum we compute the temperature two-point correlation function of WMAP 9 year at low resolution. Supported by realistic Monte-Carlo simulations, we evaluate how such observed function depends on the Galactic mask. We find that it is more and more consistent with zero (i.e. no correlation) as the Galactic mask is increased. In particular we estimate that such a behavior happens very rarely in a $Λ$CDM model, i.e. $<0.01%$ of the realizations when we adopt a mask which leaves 46% of observed sky. This is evaluated for the so called $S_{1/2…
We use an optimal estimator to study the variance of the WMAP 9 CMB field at low resolution, in both temperature and polarization. Employing realistic Monte Carlo simulation, we find statistically significant deviations from the $Λ$CDM model in several sky cuts for the temperature field. For the considered masks in this analysis, which cover at least the 54% of the sky, the WMAP 9 CMB sky and $Λ$CDM are incompatible at $ \ge 99.94%$ C.L. at large angles ($>5^\circ$). We find instead no anomaly in polarization. As a byproduct of our analysis, we present new, optimal estimates of the WMAP 9 CMB …
While the observed nearly scale-invariant initial power spectrum is regarded as one of the favorable evidence of the standard inflationary cosmology, precision observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies also suggest possible existence of nontrivial features such as those observed around multipoles $\ell\sim120$ by WMAP. Here, we examine the Planck data and investigate the effects of these features on the cosmological parameter estimation performing the Markov-Chain Monte-Carlo (MCMC) analysis. We find that the features exist in the Planck data at the same position as th…
(Abridged)Motivated by the recent results of Hansen et al. (2008) concerning a noticeable hemispherical power asymmetry in the WMAP data on small angular scales, we revisit the dipole modulated signal model introduced by Gordon et al. (2005). This model assumes that the true CMB signal consists of a Gaussian isotropic random field modulated by a dipole, and is characterized by an overall modulation amplitude, A, and a preferred direction, p. Previous analyses of this model has been restricted to very low resolution due to computational cost. In this paper, we double the angular resolution, and…
We report an improved technique for diffuse foreground minimization from Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) maps using a new multi-phase iterative internal-linear-combination (ILC) approach in harmonic space. The new procedure consists of two phases. In phase 1, a diffuse foreground cleaned map is obtained by performing a usual ILC operation in the harmonic space in a single iteration over the desired portion of the sky. In phase 2, we obtain the final foreground cleaned map using an iterative ILC approach also in the harmonic space, however, now, during each iteration of foreground minimizatio…
There exist power contrast in even and odd multipoles of WMAP power spectrum at low and intermediate multipole range. This anomaly is explicitly associated with the angular power spectrum, which are heavily used for cosmological model fitting. Having noted this, we have investigated whether even(odd) multipole data set is consistent with the WMAP concordance model. Our investigation shows WMAP concordance model does not make a good fit for even(odd) multipole data set, and there exist tension between two data subsets. Noting tension is highest in primordial power spectrum parameters, we have a…
[Abridged] We present updated estimates of Galactic foreground emission using seven years of WMAP data. Using the power spectrum of differences between multi-frequency template-cleaned maps, we find no evidence for foreground contamination outside of the updated (KQ85y7) foreground mask. We place a 15 microKelvin upper bound on rms foreground contamination in the cleaned maps used for cosmological analysis. We find no indication in the polarization data of an extra "haze" of hard synchrotron emission from energetic electrons near the Galactic center. We provide an updated map of the cosmic mic…
We present an extensive frequentist analysis of the one-point statistics (number, mean, variance, skewness and kurtosis) and two-point correlation functions determined for the local extrema of the cosmic microwave background temperature field observed in five-years of Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data. Application of a hypothesis test on the one-point statistics indicates a low-variance of hot and cold spots in all frequency bands of the WMAP data. The consistency of the observations with Gaussian simulations of the the best-fitting cosmological model is rejected at the 95% C.L.…
In this work, we formalize a new technique to investigate joint posterior density of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) signal and its theoretical angular power spectrum given the observed data, using the global internal-linear-combination (ILC) method first proposed by Sudevan & Saha (2017). We implement the method on low resolution CMB maps observed by WMAP and Planck satellite missions, using Gibbs sampling, assuming that the detector noise is negligible on large angular scales of the sky. The main products of our analysis are best fit CMB cleaned map and its theoretical angular power spectr…
Integrated Sachs-Wolfe (ISW) effect can be estimated by cross-correlating Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) sky with tracers of the local matter distribution. At late cosmic time, the dark energy induced decay of gravitation potential generates a cross-correlation signal on large angular scales. The dominant noise are the intrinsic CMB anisotropies from the inflationary epoch. In this Letter we use CMB polarization to reduce this intrinsic noise. We cross-correlate the microwave sky observed by Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) with the radio source catalog compiled by NRAO VLA Sky S…
Noticeable deviations from the prediction of the fiducial LCDM cosmology are found in the angular power spectrum of the CMB. Besides large-angle anomalies, the WMAP 1st year data revealed a dip in the power spectrum at l \sim 200, which seemed to disappear in the 3rd year and subsequent angular power spectra. Using the WMAP 1st, 3rd, and 5th year data as well as the 5 year coadded data, we study the intensity and spatial distribution of this feature in order to unveil its origin and its implications for the cosmological parameters. We show that in all WMAP data releases there is a substantial …
In this paper, we present a foreground analysis of the WMAP 5-year data using the FASTICA algorithm, improving on the treatment of the WMAP 3-year data in Bottino et al 2008. We revisit the nature of the free-free spectrum with the emphasis on attempting to confirm or otherwise the spectral feature claimed in Dobbler et al 2008b and explained in terms of spinning dust emission in the warm ionised medium. With the application of different Galactic cuts, the index is always flatter than the canonical value of 2.14 except for the Kp0 mask which is steeper. Irrespective of this, we can not confirm…
We test the hemispherical power asymmetry of the WMAP 7-year low-resolution temperature and polarization maps. We consider two natural estimators for such an asymmetry and exploit our implementation of an optimal angular power spectrum estimator for all the six CMB spectra. By scanning the whole sky through a sample of 24 directions, we search for asymmetries in the power spectra of the two hemispheres, comparing the results with Monte Carlo simulations drawn from the WMAP 7-year best-fit model. Our analysis extends previous results to the polarization sector. The level of asymmetry on the ILC…
We constrain a stochastic background of primordial magnetic fields (PMF) by its contribution to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy angular power spectrum with the combination of WMAP 7 year and South Pole Telescope (SPT) data. The contamination in the SPT data by unresolved point sources and by the Sunyaev Zeldovich (SZ) effect due to galaxy clusters has been taken into account as modelled by the SPT collaboration. With this combination of WMAP 7 yr and SPT data, we constrain the amplitude Gaussian smoothed over 1 Mpc scale of a stochatic background of non-helical PMF to $B_{\rm …
The purpose of this work is to characterize the diffuse Galactic polarized synchrotron. We present EE, BB, and EB power spectra estimated cross-correlating Planck and WMAP polarization frequency maps at 23 and 30 GHz, for a set of six sky regions covering from 30% to 94% of the sky. The EE and BB angular power spectra show a steep decay of the spectral amplitude as a function of multipole, approximated by a power law with power indices around -2.9 for both components. The B/E ratio is about 0.22. The EB cross-component is compatible with zero at 1$σ$, with upper constraint on the EB/EE ratio o…
In recent years, there have been a large number of studies which support violation of statistical isotropy. Meanwhile, there are some studies which also found inconsistency. We use the power tensor method defined earlier in the literature to study the new CMBR data. The orientation of these three orthogonal vectors, as well as the power associated with each vector, contains information about possible violation of statistical isotropy. This information is encoded in two entropy measures, the power-entropy and alignment- entropy. We apply this method to WMAP 9-year and PLANCK data. Here, we also…
We search for the dark flow induced diffuse kinetic Sunyaev Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect through CMB-galaxy cross correlation. Such angular correlation is anisotropic, with a unique $cos(theta_DF)$ angular dependence and hence can be distinguished from other components. Here, $theta_DF$ is the angle between the opposite dark flow direction and the direction of the sky where the correlation is measured. We analyze the KIAS-VAGC galaxy catalog of SDSS-DR7 and the WMAP seven-year temperature maps, applying an unbiased optimal weighting scheme to eliminate any statistically isotropic components and to …
In the context of cosmic microwave background (CMB) data analysis, we compare the efficiency at large scale of two angular power spectrum algorithms, implementing, respectively, the quadratic maximum likelihood (QML) estimator and the pseudo spectrum (pseudo-Cl) estimator. By exploiting 1000 realistic Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, we find that the QML approach is markedly superior in the range l=[2-100]. At the largest angular scales, e.g. l < 10, the variance of the QML is almost 1/3 (1/2) that of the pseudo-Cl, when we consider the WMAP kq85 (kq85 enlarged by 8 degrees) mask, making the pseu…
An appealing theory is that our current patch of universe was born as a nucleation bubble from a phase of false vacuum eternal inflation. We search for evidence for this theory by looking for the signal imprinted on the CMB that is generated when another bubble "universe" collides with our own. We create an efficient and optimal estimator for the signal in the WMAP 7-year data. We find no detectable signal, and constrain the amplitude, a, of the initial curvature perturbation that would be generated by a collision: -4.66 \times 10^{-8} < a (\sin{\thetabubble})^{4/3} < 4.73 \times 10^{-8} [Mpc^…
We present an observational search for the possible correlation between cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization map and soft X-ray background (SXRB) based on the ROSAT All-sky Survey (RASS) archive and WMAP five-year observations. This is motivated by the fact that some of the CMB polarization may arise from the scattering of CMB photons due to the free electrons generated by X-ray heating sources in the epoch of reionization. Detection of such a correlation allows one to study the role of X-ray heating in the process of reionization. However, the cross angular power spectrum of the CMB…
We present new limits on early dark energy (EDE) from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) using data from the WMAP satellite on large angular scales and South Pole Telescope (SPT) on small angular scales. We find a strong upper limit on the EDE density of Omega_e < 0.018 at 95% confidence, a factor of three improvement over WMAP data alone. We show that adding lower-redshift probes of the expansion rate to the CMB data improves constraints on the dark energy equation of state, but not the EDE density. We also explain how the small-scale CMB temperature anisotropy constrains EDE.
We update the constraints on possible features in the primordial inflationary density perturbation spectrum by using the latest data from the WMAP7 and ACT Cosmic Microwave Background experiments. The inclusion of new data significantly improves the constraints with respect to older work, especially to smaller angular scales. While we found no clear statistical evidence in the data for extensions to the simplest, featureless, inflationary model, models with a step provide a significantly better fit than standard featureless power-law spectra. We show that the possibility of a step in the infla…
The purpose of this work is to characterize the diffuse Galactic polarized synchrotron, which is the dominant CMB foreground emission at low frequency. We present EE, BB, and EB power spectra estimated from polarization frequency maps at 23 and 30 GHz as observed respectively by the WMAP K-band and the Planck lowest frequency channel, for a set of six sky regions covering from 30% to 94% of the sky. We study the synchrotron polarization angular distribution and spectral energy distribution (SED) by means of the so-called pseudo-$C_\ell$ formalism, provided by the NaMaster package, in the multi…
We examine the consistency of WMAP9 and Planck data. We compare sky maps, power spectra, and inferred LCDM cosmological parameters. Residual dipoles are seen in the WMAP and Planck sky map differences, but are consistent within the uncertainties and are not large enough to explain the widely-noted differences in angular power spectra at higher l. After removing residual dipoles and galactic foregrounds, the residual difference maps exhibit a quadrupole and other large-scale systematic structure. We identify this structure as possibly originating from Planck's beam sidelobe pick-up, but note th…
The remarkable progress in cosmic microwave background (CMB) studies over past decade has led to the era of precision cosmology in striking agreement with the $Λ$CDM model. However, the lack of power in the CMB temperature anisotropies at large angular scales (low-$\ell$), as has been confirmed by the recent Planck data also (up to $\ell=40$), although statistically not very strong (less than $3σ$), is still an open problem. One can avoid to seek an explanation for this problem by attributing the lack of power to cosmic variance orcan look for explanations i.e., different inflationary potentia…
We estimate Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarisation power spectra, and temperature-polarisation cross-spectra, from the 9-year data of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP). Foreground cleaning is implemented using minimum variance linear combinations of the coefficients of needlet decompositions of sky maps for all WMAP channels, to produce maps for CMB temperature anisotropies (T-mode) and polarisation (E-mode and B-mode), for 9 different years of observation. The final power spectra are computed from averages of all possible cross-year power spectra obtained using foregroun…
In this paper, we investigate the Ricci dark energy model with perturbations through the joint constraints of current cosmological data sets from dynamical and geometrical perspectives. We use the full cosmic microwave background information from WMAP seven-year data, the baryon acoustic oscillations from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Two Degree Galaxy Redshift Survey, and type Ia supernovae from the Union2 compilation of the Supernova Cosmology Project Collaboration. A global constraint is performed by employing the Markov chain Monte Carlo method. With the best-fitting results, we sho…
Within the frame of cosmologies where Dark Energy (DE) is a self--interacting scalar field, we allow for a CDM--DE coupling and non--zero neutrino masses, simultaneously. In their 0--0 version, i.e. in the absence of coupling and neutrino mass, these cosmologies provide an excellent fit to WMAP, SNIa and deep galaxy sample spectra, at least as good as \LambdaCDM. When the new degrees of freedom are open, we find that CDM--DE coupling and significant neutrino masses (~0.1eV per νspecies) are at least as likely as the 0--0 option and, in some cases, even statistically favoured. Results are obtai…
We first discuss the sensitivity of the WMAP CMB power spectrum to systematic errors by calculating the raw CMB power spectrum from WMAP data. We find that the power spectrum is surprisingly sensitive to the WMAP radiometer beam profile even at the position of the first acoustic peak on ~1 degree scales. Although the WMAP beam profile core is only 12.6arcmin FWHM at W, there is a long power-law tail to the beam due to side-lobes and this causes significant effects even at the first peak position. We then test the form of the beam-profile used by the WMAP team which is based on observations of …
We present polarization measurements at 8.4, 22, and 43 GHz made with the VLA of a complete sample of extragalactic sources stronger than 1 Jy in the 5-year WMAP catalogue and with declinations north of -34 degrees. The observations were motivated by the need to know the polarization properties of radio sources at frequencies of tens of GHz in order to subtract polarized foregrounds for future sensitive Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments. The total intensity and polarization measurements are generally consistent with comparable VLA calibration measurements for less-variable sources,…
(Abridged) We present the angular power spectra derived from the 7-year maps and discuss the cosmological conclusions that can be inferred from WMAP data alone. The third acoustic peak in the TT spectrum is now well measured by WMAP. In the context of a flat LambdaCDM model, this improvement allows us to place tighter constraints on the matter density from WMAP data alone, and on the epoch of matter-radiation equality, The temperature-polarization (TE) spectrum is detected in the 7-year data with a significance of 20 sigma, compared to 13 sigma with the 5-year data. The low-l EE spectrum, a me…
Statistical isotropy (SI) has been one of the simplifying assumptions in cosmological model building. Experiments like WMAP and PLANCK are attempting to test this assumption by searching for specific signals in the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) two point correlation function. Modifications to this correlation function due to gravitational lensing by the large scale structure (LSS) surrounding us have been ignored in this context. Gravitational lensing will induce signals which mimic isotropy violation even in an isotropic universe. The signal detected in the Bipolar Spherical Harmonic (Bip…
In this article we present a formalism to incorporate the partial-sky maps to the Gibbs ILC algorithm to estimate the joint posterior density of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) signal and the theoretical CMB angular power spectrum given the observed CMB maps. In order to generate the partial-sky maps we mask all the observed CMB maps provided by WMAP and Planck satellite mission using a Gaussian smoothed mask formed on the basis of thermal dust emissions in Planck 353 GHz map. The central galactic region from all the input maps is removed after the application of the smoothed mask. While…
We study four particularly bright polarized compact objects (Tau A, Virgo A, 3C273 and Fornax A) in the 7-year WMAP sky maps, with the goal of understanding potential systematics involved in estimation of foreground spectral indices. We estimate the spectral index, the polarization angle, the polarization fraction and apparent size and shape of these objects when smoothed to a nominal resolution of 1 degree FWHM. Second, we compute the spectral index as a function of polarization orientation, alpha. Because these objects are approximately point sources with constant polarization angle, this fu…
The recent release of the first light sky map of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) from the Planck satellite provides an initial opportunity for comparison with the WMAP and COBE sky maps and their reconstruction algorithms. The precision of the match between Planck's and WMAP's anisotropies below several degrees in size, which corresponds to spherical harmonics with high l, provides confidence that the differences between the anisotropies at low l are substantial. If the Planck first light sky map is taken as the gold standard, the results seem to suggest the low l components of the WMAP …
A previous work (Monteserín et al. 2008) estimated the CMB variance from the three-year WMAP data, finding a lower value than expected from Gaussian simulations using the WMAP best-fit cosmological model. We repeat the analysis on the five-year WMAP data using a new estimator with lower bias and variance. Our results confirm this anomaly at higher significance, namely with a p-value of 0.31%. We perform the analysis using different exclusion masks, showing that a particular region of the sky near the Galactic plane shows a higher variance than 95.58% of the simulations whereas the rest of the …
We study the contribution of the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (kSZ) effect, generated by the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), to the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature anisotropies in the Five-Year Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) data. We explore the concordance LambdaCDM cosmological model, with and without this kSZ contribution, using a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. Our model requires a single extra parameter to describe this new component. Our results show that the inclusion of the kSZ signal improves the fit to the data without significantly altering the b…
Recently, an analysis of data from the Fermi Gamma Ray Space Telescope has revealed a flux of gamma rays concentrated around the inner ~0.5 degrees of the Milky Way, with a spectrum that is sharply peaked at 2-4 GeV. If interpreted as the products of annihilating dark matter, this signal implies that the dark matter consists of particles with a mass between 7.3 and 9.2 GeV annihilating primarily to charged leptons. This mass range is very similar to that required to accommodate the signals reported by CoGeNT and DAMA/LIBRA. In addition to gamma rays, the dark matter is predicted to produce ene…
Suppression in primordial power on the Universe's largest observable scales has been invoked as a possible explanation for large-angle observations in the cosmic microwave background, and is allowed or predicted by some inflationary models. Here we investigate the extent to which such a suppression could be confirmed by the upcoming large-volume redshift surveys. For definiteness, we study a simple parametric model of suppression that improves the fit of the vanilla LCDM model to the angular correlation function measured by WMAP in cut-sky maps, and at the same time improves the fit to the ang…
(Abridged) New full sky temperature and polarization maps based on seven years of data from WMAP are presented. The new results are consistent with previous results, but have improved due to reduced noise from the additional integration time, improved knowledge of the instrument performance, and improved data analysis procedures. The improvements are described in detail. The seven year data set is well fit by a minimal six-parameter flat Lambda-CDM model. The parameters for this model, using the WMAP data in conjunction with baryon acoustic oscillation data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey an…
Faraday rotation induced B-modes can provide a distinctive signature of primordial magnetic fields because of their characteristic frequency dependence and because they are only weakly damped on small scales, allowing them to dominate B-modes from other sources. By numerically solving the full CMB radiative transport equations, we study the B-mode power spectrum induced by stochastic magnetic fields that have significant power on scales smaller than the thickness of the last scattering surface. Constraints on the magnetic field energy density and inertial scale are derived from WMAP 7-year dat…
