Suppression in primordial power on the Universe's largest observable scales has been invoked as a possible explanation for large-angle observations in the cosmic microwave background, and is allowed or predicted by some inflationary models. Here we investigate the extent to which such a suppression could be confirmed by the upcoming large-volume redshift surveys. For definiteness, we study a simple parametric model of suppression that improves the fit of the vanilla LCDM model to the angular correlation function measured by WMAP in cut-sky maps, and at the same time improves the fit to the angular power spectrum inferred from the maximum-likelihood analysis presented by the WMAP team. We find that the missing power at large scales, favored by WMAP observations within the context of this model, will be difficult but not impossible to rule out with a galaxy redshift survey with large volume (~100 Gpc^3). A key requirement for success in ruling out power suppression will be having redshifts of most galaxies detected in the imaging survey.
The dwarf galaxies of the Local Group are believed to be similar to the most abundant galaxies during the epoch of reionization (z>6). As a result of their proximity, there is a wealth of information that can be obtained about these galaxies; however, due to their low surface brightnesses, detecting their progenitors at high redshifts is challenging. We compare the physical properties of these dwarf galaxies to those of galaxies detected at high redshifts using Hubble Space Telescope and Spitzer observations and consider the promise of the upcoming James Webb Space Telescope on the prospects f…
In the mass range of 1e15 g up to 1e26 g, primordial black holes (PBHs) as a possible contribution to the dark matter are still unexplored. In this contribution, we investigate the possibility of an electromagnetic signal from PBH interactions with astrophysical objects in the Galaxy. We find that a signal from passages cannot be observed, since, depending on the mass, either the interaction probability or the energy loss is too small. Further, we discuss possible effects from high-mass PBHs at masses >1e26 g, where PBHs can still contribute to the dark matter at the order of ~10%. Here, we fi…
Alterations of the gravity Lagrangian introduced in modified torsion gravity theories---also referred to as $f(T)$ gravity---allows for an accelerated expansion in a matter dominated Universe. In this framework, the cosmic speed up is driven by an effective `torsion fluid'. Besides the background evolution of the Universe, structure formation is also modified because of a time dependent effective gravitational constant. Here, we investigate the imprints of $f(T)$ gravity on galaxy clustering and weak gravitational lensing to the aim of understanding whether future galaxy surveys could constrai…
It has been recently recognized that the observational relativistic effects, mainly arising from the light propagation in an inhomogeneous universe, induce the dipole asymmetry in the cross-correlation function of galaxies. In particular, the dipole asymmetry at small scales is shown to be dominated by the gravitational redshift effects. In this paper, we exploit a simple analytical description for the dipole asymmetry in the cross-correlation function valid at quasi-linear regime. In contrast to the previous model, a new prescription involves only one dimensional integrals, providing a faster…
We study simple models of massive galaxy clusters in which the intracluster medium (ICM) rotates differentially in equilibrium in the cluster gravitational potential. We obtain the X-ray surface brightness maps, evaluating the isophote flattening due to the gas rotation. Using a set of different rotation laws, we put constraint on the amplitude of the rotation velocity, finding that rotation curves with peak velocity up to \sim 600 km s^-1 are consistent with the ellipticity profiles of observed clusters. We convolve each of our models with the instrument response of the X-ray Calorimeter Spec…
We present a method that allows us for the first time to estimate the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the harmonic-space galaxy bispectrum induced by gravity, a complementary probe to already well established Fourier-space clustering analyses. We show how to do it considering only $\sim1000$ triangle configurations in multipole space, corresponding to a computational speedup of a factor $\mathcal{O}(10^2)-\mathcal{O}(10^3)$, depending on the redshift bin, when including mildly non-linear scales. Assuming observational specifications consistent with forthcoming spectroscopic and photometric gala…
Kaiser redshift-space distortion formula describes well the clustering of galaxies in redshift surveys on small scales, but there are numerous additional terms that arise on large scales. Some of these terms can be described using Newtonian dynamics and have been discussed in the literature, while the others require proper general relativistic description that was only recently developed. Accounting for these terms in galaxy clustering is the first step toward tests of general relativity on horizon scales. The effects can be classified as two terms that represent the velocity and the gravitati…
We consider the benefits of measuring cosmic statistical anisotropy from redshift-space correlators of the galaxy number density fluctuation and the peculiar velocity field without adopting the plane-parallel (PP) approximation. Since the correlators are decomposed using the general tripolar spherical harmonic (TripoSH) basis, we can deal with wide-angle contributions untreatable by the PP approximation, and at the same time, target anisotropic signatures can be cleanly extracted. We, for the first time, compute the covariance of the TripoSH decomposition coefficient and the Fisher matrix to f…
Quasi-single field inflation predicts a peculiar momentum dependence in the squeezed limit of the primordial bispectrum which smoothly interpolates between the local and equilateral models. This dependence is directly related to the mass of the isocurvatons in the theory which is determined by the supersymmetry. Therefore, in the event of detection of a non-zero primordial bispectrum, additional constraints on the parameter controlling the momentum-dependence in the squeezed limit becomes an important question. We explore the effects of these non-Gaussian initial conditions on large-scale stru…
We introduce a new cross-correlation method to detect and verify the astrophysical origin of Faraday Rotation (FR) in multiwavelength surveys. FR is well studied in radio astronomy from radio point sources but the $λ^{2}$ suppression of FR makes detecting and accounting for this effect difficult at millimeter and sub-millimeter wavelengths. Therefore statistical methods are used to attempt to detect FR in the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Most estimators of the FR power spectrum rely on single frequency data. In contrast, we investigate the correlation of polarized CMB maps with FR measur…
Ram pressure stripping can remove hot and cold gas from galaxies in the intracluster medium (ICM), as shown by observations of X-ray and HI galaxy wakes in nearby clusters of galaxies. However, ram pressure stripping, including pre-processing in group environments, does not remove all the hot coronal gas from cluster galaxies. Recent high-resolution Chandra observations have shown that $\sim 1 - 4$ kpc extended, hot galactic coronae are ubiquitous in group and cluster galaxies. To better understand this result, we simulate ram pressure stripping of a cosmologically motivated population of gala…

Understanding the interaction between galaxies and their surroundings is central to building a coherent picture of galaxy evolution. Here we use GALEX imaging of a statistically representative sample of 23 galaxy groups at z=0.06 to explore how local and global group environment affect the UV properties and dust-corrected star formation rates of their member galaxies. The data provide star formation rates out to beyond 2R_200 in all groups, down to a completeness limit and limiting galaxy stellar mass of 0.06 M_sun/yr and 10^8 M_sun, respectively. At fixed galaxy stellar mass, we find that the…
We use six, high-resolution $Λ$CDM simulations of galaxy formation to study how emission from dark matter annihilation is affected by baryonic processes. These simulations produce isolated, disc-dominated galaxies with structure, stellar populations, and stellar and halo masses comparable to those of the Milky Way. They resolve dark matter structures with mass above $\sim 10^6$ $\rm M_{\odot}$ and are each available in both full-physics and dark-matter-only versions. In the full-physics case, formation of the stellar galaxy enhances annihilation radiation from the dominant smooth component of …

We present a study of the overdensity of X-ray selected AGN in 33 galaxy clusters in the XMM-LSS field, up to redhift z=1.05. Previous studies have shown that the presence of X-ray selected AGN in rich galaxy clusters is suppressed. In the current study we investigate the occurrence of X-ray selected AGN in low and moderate X-ray luminosity galaxy clusters. Due to the wide contiguous XMM-LSS survey area we are able to extend the study to the cluster outskirts. We therefore determine the projected overdensity of X-ray point-like sources out to 6r_{500} radius. To provide robust statistical resu…
We consider an alternative to conventional three-point statistics such as the bispectrum, which is purely based on the Fourier phases of the density field: the line correlation function. This statistic directly probes the non-linear clustering regime and contains information highly complementary to that contained in the power spectrum. In this work, we determine, for the first time, its potential to constrain cosmological parameters and detect baryon acoustic oscillations (hereafter BAOs). We show how to compute the line correlation function for a discrete sampled set of tracers that follow a …
Understanding the thermodynamic state of the hot intracluster medium (ICM) in a galaxy cluster requires a knowledge of the plasma transport processes, especially thermal conduction. The basic physics of thermal conduction in plasmas with ICM-like conditions has yet to be elucidated, however. We use particle-in-cell simulations and analytic models to explore the dynamics of an ICM-like plasma (with small gyroradius, large mean-free-path, and strongly sub-dominant magnetic pressure) driven by the diffusive heat flux associated with thermal conduction. Lin- ear theory reveals that whistler waves …
We compute the real space galaxy power spectrum, including the leading order effects of General Relativity and primordial non-Gaussianity from the $f_{\mathrm{NL}}$ and $g_{\mathrm{NL}}$ parameters. Such contributions come from the one-loop matter power spectrum terms dominant at large scales, and from the factors of the non-linear bias parameter $b_{\mathrm{NL}}$ (akin to the Newtonian $b_ϕ$). We assess the detectability of these contributions in Stage-IV surveys. In particular, we note that specific values of the bias parameter may erase the primordial and relativistic contributions to the c…
Primordial inflation may represent the most powerful collider to test high-energy physics models. In this paper we study the impact on the inflationary power spectrum of the comoving curvature perturbation in the specific model where massive higher spin fields are rendered effectively massless during a de Sitter epoch through suitable couplings to the inflaton field. In particular, we show that such fields with spin $s$ induce a distinctive statistical anisotropic signal on the power spectrum, in such a way that not only the usual $g_{2M}$-statistical anisotropy coefficients, but also higher-o…
The Fourier-space galaxy bispectrum is complex, with the imaginary part arising from leading-order relativistic corrections, due to Doppler, gravitational redshift and related line-of-sight effects in redshift space. The detection of the imaginary part of the bispectrum is potentially a smoking gun signal of relativistic contributions. We investigate whether next-generation spectroscopic surveys could make such a detection. For a Stage IV spectroscopic $Hα$ survey similar to Euclid, we find that the cumulative signal to noise of this relativistic signature is $\mathcal{O}(10)$. Long-mode relat…

We present the results of an extended narrow-band Hα study of the massive galaxy cluster XMMU J2235.3-2557 at z = 1.39. This paper represents a follow up study to our previous investigation of star-formation in the cluster centre, extending our analysis out to a projected cluster radius of 1.5 Mpc. Using the Near InfraRed Imager and Spectrograph (NIRI) on Gemini North we obtained deep H narrow-band imaging corresponding to the rest-frame wavelength of Hα at the cluster's redshift. We identify a total of 163 potential cluster members in both pointings, excluding stars based on their near-IR col…
Baryonic feedback effects consist of a major systematic for upcoming weak-lensing and galaxy-clustering surveys. In this paper, we present an emulator for the baryonic suppression of the matter power spectrum. The emulator is based on the baryonification model, containing seven free parameters that are connected to the gas profiles and stellar abundances in haloes. We show that with the baryonic emulator, we can not only recover the power spectra of hydro-dynamical simulations at sub-percent precision but also establish a connection between the baryonic suppression of the power spectrum and th…
Cold gas streaming along the dark-matter filaments of the cosmic web is predicted to be the major provider of resources for disc buildup, violent disk instability and star formation in massive galaxies in the early universe. We study to what extent these cold streams are traceable in the extended circum-galactic environment of galaxies via Ly alpha absorption and selected low ionisation metal absorption lines. We model the expected absorption signatures using high resolution zoom-in AMR cosmological simulations. In the postprocessing, we distinguish between self-shielded gas and unshielded gas…
We study the detectability of large-scale velocity effects on galaxy clustering, by simulating galaxy surveys and combining the clustering of different types of tracers of large-scale structure. We employ a set of lognormal mocks that simulate a $20.000$ deg$^2$ near-complete survey up to $z=0.8$, in which each galaxy mock traces the spatial distribution of dark matter of that mock with a realistic bias prescription. We find that the ratios of the monopoles of the power spectra of different types of tracers carry most of the information that can be extracted from a multi-tracer analysis. In pa…
In this paper, we study the effects of general relativistic corrections on the observed galaxy power spectrum in thawing class of cubic Galileon model with linear potential that preserves the shift symmetry. In this scenario, the observed galaxy power spectrum differs from the standard matter power spectrum mainly due to redshift space distortion (RSD) factor and relativistic effects. The RSD term enhances the matter power spectrum both at larger and smaller scales whereas the relativistic terms further enhance the matter power spectrum only at larger scales. In comparison with $Λ$CDM, the obs…
We study an efficient way to enhance the measurability of the galaxy density and/or velocity power spectrum in redshift space. It is based on the angular decomposition with the Tripolar spherical harmonic (TripoSH) basis and applicable even to galaxy distributions in wide-angle galaxy surveys. While nontrivial multipole-mode mixings are inevitable in the covariance of the Legendre decomposition coefficient commonly used in the small-angle power spectrum analysis, our analytic computation of the covariance of the TripoSH decomposition coefficient shows that such mixings are absent by virtue of …
The cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature distribution measured by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) exhibits anomalously low correlation at large angles. Quantifying the degree to which this feature in the temperature data is in conflict with standard Lambda-CDM cosmology is somewhat ambiguous because of the a posteriori nature of the observation. One physical mechanism that has been proposed as a possible explanation for the deficit in the large-angle temperature correlations is a suppression of primordial power on ~Gpc scales. To distinguish whether the anomaly is a si…
Simulations have become an indispensable tool for accurate modelling of observables measured in galaxy surveys, but can be expensive if very large dynamic range in scale is required. We describe how to combine Lagrangian perturbation theory models with N-body simulations to reduce the effects of finite computational volume in the prediction of ensemble average properties in the simulations within the context of control variates. In particular we use the fact that Zel'dovich displacements, computed during initial condition generation for any simulation, correlate strongly with the final density…
Cosmological cluster-scale strong gravitational lensing probes the mass distribution of the dense cores of massive dark matter halos and the structures along the line of sight from background sources to the observer. It is frequently assumed that the primary lens mass dominates the lensing, with the contribution of secondary masses along the line of sight being neglected. Secondary mass structures may, however, affect both the detectability of strong lensing in a given survey and modify the properties of the lensing that is detected. In this paper, we utilize a large cosmological N-body simula…
Galaxies and clusters embedded in the large-scale structure of the Universe are observed to align in preferential directions. Galaxy alignment has been established as a potential probe for cosmological information, but the application of cluster alignments for these purposes remains unexplored. Clusters are observed to have a higher alignment amplitude than galaxies, but because galaxies are much more numerous, the trade-off in detectability between the two signals remains unclear. We present forecasts comparing cluster and galaxy alignments for two extragalactic survey set-ups: a currently-av…
