The effect of the site potential in an imperfect layer is studied in a d-wave layer superconductor on the basis of the electron correlation. The site potential binds electrons to the imperfect layer, and then, the superconductivity of the imperfect layer is independent of that of the bulk. We found that the superconducting transition temperature of the imperfect layer becomes higher than that of the bulk owing to the effect of the site potential. In this situation, the Fermi surface of the imperfect layer has a strong nesting feature leading to increases in both the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation and the density of states near the Fermi level, which are in favor of d-wave pairing.
The properties of nanoscopic rings with electronic correlations and impurities are analyzed numerically by means of two complementary methods. Namely, we perform exact diagonalization of systems up to several lattice sites and Bogoliubov-de Gennes-equations studies of systems consisting of a few hundred sites. We demonstrate how the properties of the systems are affected by various configurations of impurities for both repulsive and attractive electron-electron interactions. In the case of attractive interaction we show that the nanoscopic properties are mainly determined by the competition be…
The discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates has added a new family of materials to the fascinating growing class of unconventional superconductors. By incorporating the strongly correlated multi-orbital nature of the low-energy electronic degrees of freedom, we compute the leading superconducting instability from magnetic fluctuations relevant for infinite-layer nickelates. Specifically, by properly including the doping dependence of the Ni $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{z^2}$ orbitals as well as the self-doping band, we uncover a transition from $d$-wave pairing symmetry to nodal $…
Correlation information in strongly correlated electron systems can be obtained using an extended Drude model. An interesting method related to the extended Drude model analysis of superconducting optical data was proposed recently, and it has attracted attention from researchers. This method aims to extract the optical self-energy of quasiparticles (or residual unpaired electrons) from measured optical data in the superconducting state. However, this residual optical self-energy is a partial optical self-energy. The interpretation and significance of this partial optical self-energy is unclea…

We perform a theoretical study of the effects of electronic correlations on the superconducting gap structure of multi-band superconductors. In particular, by comparing standard RPA-based spin-fluctuation mediated gap structures to those obtained within the FLEX formalism for an iron-based superconductor, we obtain directly the feedback effects from electron-electron interactions on the momentum-space gap structure. We show how self-energy effects can lead to an orbital inversion of the orbital-resolved spin susceptibility, and thereby invert the hierarchy of the most important orbitals channe…
An electrostatic field, which is applied to a gated high-temperature superconducting (HTSC) film, is believed to affect the film similar to charge doping. Analyzing the pairing in terms of a t-J model, we show that a coupling to electric dipoles and phonons at the interface of film and dielectric gate localizes the injected charge and leads to a superconductor-insulator transition. This results in a dramatic modification of the doping dependent phase diagram close to and above the optimal doping which is expected to shed light on recent electric field-effect experiments with HTSC cuprates.
We model a Superconducting Single-Electron Transistor operating by repulsive interactions. The device consists of a ring of Hubbard clusters, placed between electrodes and capacitively coupled to a gate potential. In each cluster, a pair of electrons at appropriate filling feels a weak effective interaction which leads to pairing in part of the parameter space. Thus, the system can host many bound pairs, with correlation induced binding. When the charging energy exceeds the pairing energy, single-electron tunneling prevails; in the opposite regime, we predict the Coulomb blockade pattern of tw…
We have examined the magnetic properties of polycrystalline, superconducting YBa_2(Cu_0.96Ni_0.04)_3O_y (y ~ 7, T_sc ~ 75 K) using two local probe techniques: 170Yb Moessbauer down to 0.1 K and muon spin relaxation (muSR) down to 1.5 K. At 0.1 K, the 170Yb measurements show the Cu(2) over essentially all the sample volume carry magnetically correlated moments which are static on the time-scale of 10^{-9} s. The moments show a distribution in size. The correlations are probably short range. As the temperature increases, the correlated moments are observed to fluctuate with measurable rates (in …
The question of determining the underlying Fermi surface (FS) that is gapped by superconductivity (SC) is of central importance in strongly correlated systems, particularly in view of angle-resolved photoemission experiments. Here we explore various definitions of the FS in the superconducting state using the zero-energy Green's function, the excitation spectrum and the momentum distribution. We examine (a) d-wave SC in high Tc cuprates, and (b) the s-wave superfluid in the BCS-BEC crossover. In each case we show that the various definitions agree, to a large extent, but all of them violate th…
We have examined the magnetic properties of superconducting YBa_2(Cu_0.96Co_0.04)_3O_y (y ~ 7, T_sc = 65 K) using elastic neutron scattering and muon spin relaxation (muSR) on single crystal samples. The elastic neutron scattering measurements evidence magnetic reflections which correspond to a commensurate antiferromagnetic Cu(2) magnetic structure with an associated Neel temperature T_N ~ 400 K. This magnetically correlated state is not evidenced by the muSR measurements. We suggest this apparent anomaly arises because the magnetically correlated state is dynamic in nature. It fluctuates wit…

We extend the rotationally invariant formulation of the slave-boson method to superconducting states. This generalization, building on the recent work by Lechermann et al. [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 76}, 155102 (2007)], allows to study superconductivity in strongly correlated systems. We apply the formalism to a specific case of strongly correlated superconductivity, as that found in a multi-orbital Hubbard model for alkali-doped fullerides, where the superconducting pairing has phonic origin, yet it has been shown to be favored by strong correlation owing to the symmetry of the interaction. The metho…
Charge density bounds of knotted and linked vortex states in two-component Ginzburg-Landau model are considered. When the mutual linking number of vector order parameter vortex lines is less than the Hopf invariant, these states have the lower-lying energies. It is shown that a set of local minima of free energy contains new classes of universality which exist in a hole density range limited at both finite ends.
We analyze microwave cavity perturbation methods, and show that the technique is an excellent, precision method to study the dynamic magnetic and dielectric response in the $GHz$ frequency range. Using superconducting cavities, we obtain exceptionally high precision and sensitivity for measurements of relative changes. A dynamic electromagnetic susceptibility $\tildeζ(T)=ζ^{\prime}+iζ^{\prime \prime}$ is introduced, which is obtained from the measured parameters: the shift of cavity resonant frequency $δf$ and quality factor $Q$. We focus on the case of a spherical sample placed at the center …
We discuss a detailed phase diagram and other microscopic characteristics on the applied magnetic field - temperature (H_a-T) plane for a simple model of correlated fluid represented by a two-dimensional (2D) gas of heavy quasiparticles with masses dependent on the spin direction and the effective field generated by the electron correlations. The consecutive transitions between the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) and the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phases are either continuous or discontinuous, depending on the values of H_a and T. In the latter case, weak metamagnetic transitions …
We present a detailed study of the spectral properties of a locally correlated site embedded in a BCS superconducting medium. To this end the Anderson impurity model with superconducting bath is analysed by numerical renormalisation group (NRG) calculations. We calculate one and two-particle dynamic response function to elucidate the spectral excitation and the nature of the ground state for different parameter regimes with and without particle-hole symmetry. The position and weight of the Andreev bound states is given for all relevant parameters. We also present phase diagrams for the differe…
We study theoretically the electron transport in a 1D conductor adiabatically connected to a superconducting and normal metal leads. In the case of non-interacting we show that ac voltage applied along with dc voltage modifies I-V curve resembling a regime of photon-assisted tunneling. We obtain in the limit of low voltages, that the electron-electron interaction affects electronic transport resulting in a decrease of conductance and features in the frequency dependence of the impedance.
UTe2 is a promising candidate for spin-triplet superconductors, in which a paramagnetic normal state becomes superconducting due to spin fluctuations. The subsequent discovery of various unusual superconducting properties has promoted the use of UTe2 as an exciting playground to study unconventional superconductivity, but fathoming the normal state fermiology and its influence on the superconductivity still requires further investigation. Here, we theoretically show that electron correlation induces a dramatic change in the normal state fermiology with an emergent correlated Fermi surface (FS)…
We work out a unified theory describing both non-local electron transport and cross-correlated shot noise in a three-terminal normal-superconducting-normal (NSN) hybrid nanostructure. We describe noise cross correlations both for subgap and overgap bias voltages and for arbitrary distribution of channel transmissions in NS contacts. We specifically address a physically important situation of diffusive contacts and demonstrate a non-trivial behavior of non-local shot noise exhibiting both positive and negative cross correlations depending on the bias voltages. For this case, we derive a relativ…
We propose a novel mechanism for the photo-induced superconducting-like response recently reported in cuprates and other strongly correlated materials. This mechanism relies on quantum-fluctuating bosons consisting of electron pairs. With periodic drive, the electron pairs and vacancies of pairs form a coherent non-equilibrium condensate, different from conventional superconductors, yet showing superconducting-like response in some regimes even with dissipation. Unlike the case of driven fermionic bands which results in the familiar Floquet bands with hybridization gaps, for driven bosons the …
The slave boson mean-field studies of the ground state of the Hubbard model with correlated hopping were performed. The approach qualitatively recovers the exact results for the case of the hopping integral t equal to the correlated hopping integral X. The phase diagram for the strongly correlated state with only singly occupied sites, the weakly correlated state, where single and double occupation is allowed, and for the superconducting state, was determined for any values of X and any electron concentration n. At the half-filled band (n=1) a direct transition from the superconductor to the M…
Recently a new phenomenological Hamiltonian has been proposed to describe the superconducting cuprates. This so-called Gossamer Hamiltonian is an apt model for a superconductor with strong on-site Coulomb repulsion betweenthe electrons. It is shown that as one approaches half-filling the Gossamer superconductor, and hence the superconducting state, with strong repulsion is unstable toward an antiferromagnetic insulator an can undergo a quantum phase transition to such an insulator if one increases the on-site Coulomb repulsion.
Layered organic superconductors of the BEDT family are model systems for the interplay of the Mott transition with superconductivity, magnetic order and frustration. Recent experimental studies on a hole-doped version of BEDT compounds reveal an enhancement of superconductivity and a rapid crossover between two different conducting phases above the superconducting dome. One of these phases is a Fermi liquid, the other not. Using plaquette cellular dynamical mean field theory with state of the art continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo calculations, we study this problem with the two-dimensional H…
We have introduced a Coulomb correlated normal state to study the superconducting pairing with a Fermi liquid like normal phase background in a 3 dimensional system. The role of the Coulomb correlation has been actively incorporated by means of Gutzwiller projection scheme, in the presence of phonon mediated attractive electron-electron interaction throughout the entire regime of its applicability. We variationally modulate the Coulomb correlation strength from the weak to the strong regime in our calculational procedure. The main highlight of our results is the appearance of a '2-gap-like' st…
In a recent X-ray absorption study in boron doped diamond, Nakamura et al. have seen a well isolated narrow boron impurity band in non-superconducting samples and an additional narrow band at the chemical potential in a superconducting sample. We interpret the beautiful spectra as evidence for upper Hubbard band of a Mott insulating impurity band and an additional metallic `mid-gap band' of a conducting `self-doped' Mott insulator. This supports the basic framework of a recent theory of the present author of strongly correlated impurity band superconductivity (SCIBS) in a template of a wide-ga…
Recently a new phenomenological Hamiltonian was proposed to describe the superconducting cuprates in which correlations and on-site Coulomb repulsion are introduced by partial Gutzwiller projection. This Gossamer Hamiltonian has an exact ground state and differs from the t-J and Hubbard Hamiltonians in possessing a powerful attractive interaction among electrons responsible for Cooper pairing in the d-wave channel. It is a faithful description for a superconductor with strong on-site electronic repulsion. The superconducting tunneling gap remains intact and despite on-site repulsion. Near half…
We report an unusual persistence of superconductivity against high magnetic fields in the iron chalcogenide film FeTe:O$_{x}$ below ~ 2.5 K. Instead of saturating like a mean-field behavior with a single order parameter, the measured low-temperature upper critical field increases progressively, suggesting a large supply of superconducting states accessible via magnetic field or low-energy thermal fluctuations. We demonstrate that superconducting states of finite momenta can be realized within the conventional theory, despite its questionable applicability. Our findings reveal a fundamental cha…
Response functions for spin-density-wave (SDW) and d-wave singlet superconductivity ($d$SC) in quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) electron systems are calculated by a renormalization group technique. It is shown that the response functions for both SDW, $χ_\rs$, and $d$SC, $χ_d$, are enhanced by interchain hopping, $t_\perp$, i.e., by quasi-one dimensionality. When the Fermi surface deviates from perfect nesting, $χ_\rs$ saturates below the energy scale of imperfectness of the nesting, while $χ_d$ is hardly affected. Consequently, the superconducting correlation increases even away from the SDW phase…
We report a combined theoretical and experimental investigation of the superconducting state in the quasi-two-dimensional organic superconductor $κ$-(ET)$_2$Cu[N(CN)$_2$]Br. Applying spin-fluctuation theory to a low-energy material-specific Hamiltonian derived from ab initio density functional theory we calculate the quasiparticle density of states in the superconducting state. We find a distinct three-peak structure that results from a strongly anisotropic mixed-symmetry superconducting gap with eight nodes and twofold rotational symmetry. This theoretical prediction is supported by low-tempe…
We present a comparative density-functional theory plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) study of the two known superconducting members of the rare-earth (R) layered nickelate family: hole-doped RNiO$_{2}$ ($n=\infty$) and R$_{6}$Ni$_{5}$O$_{12}$ ($n=5$). At the same nominal carrier concentration, these two materials exhibit nearly identical electronic structures and many-body correlations effects: mass enhancements, self-energies, and occupations. However, the fermiology of the quintuple-layer nickelate is more two-dimensional-like than its infinite-layer counterpart making this new sup…
The pairing mechanism in A$_3$C$_{60}$ is investigated by studying the properties of a three-orbital Hubbard model with antiferromagnetic Hund coupling in the normal and superconducting phase. Local orbital fluctuations are shown to be substantially enhanced in the superconducting state, with a fluctuation energy scale that matches the low-energy peak in the spectral weight of the order parameter. Our results demonstrate that local orbital fluctuations provide the pairing glue in strongly correlated fulleride superconductors and support the spin/orbital freezing theory of unconventional superc…
Following earlier work on electron or hole liquids flowing through assemblies with magnetic fluctuations, we have recently exposed a marked correlation of the superconducting temperature Tc, for non s-wave pairing materials, with coherence length xi and effective mass m*. The very recent study of Abanov et al. [Europhys. Lett. 54, 488 (2001)] and the prior investigation of Monthoux and Lonzarich [Phys. Rev. B 59, 14598 (1999)] have each focussed on the concept of a spin-fluctuation temperature T_sf, which again is intimately related to Tc. For the d-wave pairing via antiferromagnetic spin fluc…
We calculate a low-frequency surface impedance of a dirty, s-wave superconductor with an imperfect surface incorporating either a thin layer with a reduced pairing constant or a thin, proximity-coupled normal layer. Such structures model realistic surfaces of superconducting materials which can contain oxide layers, absorbed impurities or nonstoichiometric composition. We solved the Usadel equations self-consistently and obtained spatial distributions of the order parameter and the quasiparticle density of states which then were used to calculate a low-frequency surface resistance $R_s(T)$ and…
We have measured the number of quasiparticles and their lifetime in aluminium superconducting microwave resonators. The number of excess quasiparticles below 160 mK decreases from 72 to 17 $μ$m$^{-3}$ with a 6 dB decrease of the microwave power. The quasiparticle lifetime increases accordingly from 1.4 to 3.5 ms. These properties of the superconductor were measured through the spectrum of correlated fluctuations in the quasiparticle system and condensate of the superconductor, which show up in the resonator amplitude and phase respectively. Because uncorrelated noise sources vanish, fluctuatio…
Linear resistances and $IV$-characteristics have been measured over a wide range in the parameter space of the mixed phase of multilayered a-TaGe/Ge films. Three films with varying interlayer coupling and correlated defects oriented at an angle $\approx 25$ from the film normal were investigated. Experimental data were analyzed within vortex glass models and a second order phase transition from a resistive vortex liquid to a pinned glass phase. Various vortex phases including changes from three to two dimensional behavior depending on anisotropy have been identified. Careful analysis of $IV$-c…
Error-corrected quantum computers can only work if errors are small and uncorrelated. Here I show how cosmic rays or stray background radiation affects superconducting qubits by modeling the phonon to electron/quasiparticle down-conversion physics. For present designs, the model predicts about 57\% of the radiation energy breaks Cooper pairs into quasiparticles, which then vigorously suppress the qubit energy relaxation time ($T_1 \sim$ 160 ns) over a large area (cm) and for a long time (ms). Such large and correlated decay kills error correction. Using this quantitative model, I show how this…
We consider coupled quantum two-state systems (qubits) exposed to a global relaxation process. The global relaxation refers to the assumption that qubits are coupled to the same quantum bath with approximately equal strengths, appropriate for long-wavelength environmental fluctuations. We show that interactions do not spoil the picture of Dicke's subradiant and superradiant states where quantum interference effects lead to striking deviations from the independent relaxation picture. Remarkably, the system possess a stable entangled state and a state decaying faster than single qubit excitation…
Quantum error correction can preserve quantum information in the presence of local errors, but correlated errors are fatal. For superconducting qubits, high-energy particle impacts from background radioactivity produce energetic phonons that travel throughout the substrate and create excitations above the superconducting ground state, known as quasiparticles, which can poison all qubits on the chip. We use normal metal reservoirs on the chip back side to downconvert phonons to low energies where they can no longer poison qubits. We introduce a pump-probe scheme involving controlled injection o…
The study of Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions in clean, layered two-dimensional superconductors promises to provide insight into a host of novel phenomena like re-entrant vortex-dynamics, underlying unconventional metallic phases, and topological superconductivity. In this letter, we report the study of charge carrier dynamics in a novel 2-dimensional superconducting van der Waals heterostructure comprising monolayer MoS2 and few-layer NbSe2 (15 nm). Using low-frequency conductance fluctuation spectroscopy, we show that the superconducting transition in the system is percolative. We…
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) are a rich family of two-dimensional materials displaying a multitude of different quantum ground states. In particular, d$^3$ TMDCs are paradigmatic materials hosting a variety of symmetry broken states, including charge density waves, superconductivity, and magnetism. Among this family, NbSe$_2$ is one of the best-studied superconducting materials down to the monolayer limit. Despite its superconducting nature, a variety of results point towards strong electronic repulsions in NbSe$_2$. Here, we control the strength of the interactions experimentally v…
Using a nonequilibrium implementation of the Lanczos-based exact diagonalisation technique we study the possibility of the light-induced superconducting phase coherence in a solid state system after an ultrafast optical excitation. In particular, we investigate the buildup of superconducting correlations by calculating an exact time-dependent wave function reflecting the properties of the system in non-equilibrium and the corresponding transient response functions. Within our picture we identify a possible transient Meissner effect after dynamical quenching of the non-superconducting wavefunct…
The notion of a Fermi surface (FS) is one of the most ingenious concepts developed by solid state physicists during the past century. It plays a central role in our understanding of interacting electron systems. Extraordinary efforts have been undertaken, both by experiment and by theory, to reveal the FS of the high temperature superconductors (HTSC), the most prominent strongly correlated superconductors. Here, we discuss some of the prevalent methods used to determine the FS and show that they lead generally to erroneous results close to half filling and at low temperatures, due to the larg…
We explore theoretically electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) in a superconducting quantum circuit (SQC). The system is a persistent-current flux qubit biased in a $Λ$ configuration. Previously [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 087003 (2004)], we showed that an ideally-prepared EIT system provides a sensitive means to probe decoherence. Here, we extend this work by exploring the effects of imperfect dark-state preparation and specific decoherence mechanisms (population loss via tunneling, pure dephasing, and incoherent population exchange). We find an initial, rapid population loss from the $Λ$ …
We study the Josephson current 0-$π$ transition of a quantum dot tuned to the Kondo regime. The physics can be quantitatively captured by the numerically exact continuous time quantum Monte Carlo method applied to the single-impurity Anderson model with BCS superconducting leads. For a comparison to an experiment the tunnel couplings are determined by fitting the normal-state linear conductance. Excellent agreement for the dependence of the critical Josephson current on the level energy is achieved. For increased tunnel couplings the Kondo scale becomes comparable to the superconducting gap an…
We study the dynamics of the Cooper pairing across the T=0 phase diagram of the two-dimensional Hubbard Model, relevant for high-temperature superconductors, using a cluster extension of dynamical mean field theory. We find that the superconducting pairing function evolves from an unconventional form in the over-doped region into a more conventional boson-mediated retarded form in the under-doped region of the phase diagram. The boson, however, promotes the rise of a pseudo-gap in the electron density of states rather than a superconducting gap as in the standard theory of superconductivity. W…
We consider a clean layered magnetic superconductor in which a continuous magnetic transition takes place inside superconducting state and the exchange interaction between superconducting and magnetic subsystems is weak so that superconductivity is not destroyed at the magnetic transition. An example of such material is RbEuFe$_{4}$As$_{4}$. We investigate the suppression of the superconducting gap and superfluid density by correlated magnetic fluctuations in the vicinity of the magnetic transition. The influence of nonuniform exchange field on superconducting parameters is sensitive to the re…
In this letter, we describe quantitative magnetic imaging of superconducting vortices in RbEuFe$_4$As$_4$ in order to investigate the unique interplay between the magnetic and superconducting sublattices. Our scanning Hall microscopy data reveal a pronounced suppression of the superfluid density near the magnetic ordering temperature in good qualitative agreement with a recently-developed model describing the suppression of superconductivity by correlated magnetic fluctuations. These results indicate a pronounced exchange interaction between the superconducting and magnetic subsystems in RbEuF…
We review recent progress in point contact spectroscopy (PCS) to extract spectroscopic information out of correlated electron materials, with the emphasis on non-superconducting states. PCS has been used to detect bosonic excitations in normal metals, where signatures (e.g. phonons) are usually less than 1$\%$ of the measured conductance. In the superconducting state, point contact Andreev reflection (PCAR) has been widely used to study properties of the superconducting gap in various superconductors. In the last decade, there have been more and more experimental results suggesting that the po…
Superconducting nanofilms are tunable systems that can host a 3D-2D dimensional crossover, leading to the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) superconducting transition approaching the 2D regime. Reducing further the dimensionality, from 2D to quasi-1D, superconducting nanostructures with disorder can generate quantum and thermal phase slips (PS) of the order parameter. Both BKT and PS are complex phase fluctuation phenomena of difficult experimental detection. Here, we have characterized superconducting NbN nanofilms thinner than 15 nm, on different substrates, by temperature dependent resi…
The families of high-temperature superconductors recently welcomed a new member: hole doped nickelate Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_2$ with a $\sim$15K transition temperature. To understand its emergent low-energy behaviors and experimental properties, an immediate key question is whether the superconducting hole carriers reside in oxygen as in the cuprates, or in nickel as in most nickelates. We answer this crucial question via a ``(LDA+$U$)+ED'' scheme: deriving an effective interacting Hamiltonian of the hole carriers from density functional LDA+$U$ calculation, and studying its local many-body …
We report thermal transport measurement of KxFe2-ySe2 superconducting single crystal. Significant peak anomaly in thermal conductivity is observed at nearly TC/2 indicating a large phonon mean-free-path in the superconducting state. The zero-temperature extrapolated thermoelectric power is smaller than the value in typical strongly correlated superconductors, implying large normalized Fermi temperature. In contrast to other iron superconductors, thermoelectric power in our sample does not exhibit significant anomalies. These findings indicate that KxFe2-ySe2 is a weakly or intermediately corre…
Scanning tunneling spectroscopies are performed below 100~mK on nano-crystalline boron-doped diamond films characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy and transport measurements. We demonstrate a strong correlation between the local superconductivity strength and the granular structure of the films. The study of the spectral shape, amplitude and temperature dependence of the superconductivity gap enables us to differentiate intrinsically superconducting grains that follow the BCS model, from grains showing a different behavior involving the superconducting proximity effect.
