Response functions for spin-density-wave (SDW) and d-wave singlet superconductivity ($d$SC) in quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) electron systems are calculated by a renormalization group technique. It is shown that the response functions for both SDW, $χ_\rs$, and $d$SC, $χ_d$, are enhanced by interchain hopping, $t_\perp$, i.e., by quasi-one dimensionality. When the Fermi surface deviates from perfect nesting, $χ_\rs$ saturates below the energy scale of imperfectness of the nesting, while $χ_d$ is hardly affected. Consequently, the superconducting correlation increases even away from the SDW phase. This gives a possible interpretation of the recent experimental results of Q1D organic conductor (TMTTF)$_2$SbF$_6$, where $T_{\rm c}$ increases even away from the SDW phase.
Using a renormalization group approach, we determine the phase diagram of an extended quasi-one-dimensional electron gas model that includes interchain hopping, nesting deviations and both intrachain and interchain repulsive interactions. We find a close proximity of spin-density- and charge-density-wave phases, singlet d-wave and triplet f-wave superconducting phases. There is a striking correspondence between our results and recent puzzling experimental findings in the Bechgaard salts, including the coexistence of spin-density-wave and charge-density-wave phases and the possibility of a trip…
The two-dimensional t-J model on a frustrating lattice is studied using mean-field variational theories with Gutzwiller approximation. We find that a superconducting state with broken time-reversal symmetry (d+id state) is realized in the parameter region close to the triangular lattice. The frustration enlarges the region of superconductivity when $t<0$ for the hole-doped case, which is equivalent to $t>0$ for electron doping. We also discuss the SU(2) degeneracy at half-filling. The d+id state probably corresponds to the spin gap state at half-filling.
$(TMTSF)_2ClO_4$ is a quasi-one dimensional organic conductor and superconductor with $T_c=1.4$K, and one of at least two Bechgaard salts observed to have upper critical fields far exceeding the paramagnetic limit. Nevertheless, the $^{77}$Se NMR Knight shift at low fields reveals a decrease in spin susceptibility $χ_s$ consistent with singlet spin pairing. The field dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate at 100mK exhibits a sharp crossover (or phase transition) at a field $H_s\sim15$kOe, to a regime where $χ_s$ is close to the normal state value, even though \hc2 $\gg H_s$.
We demonstrate that electron wave functions change their dimensionality at some commensurate directions of a magnetic field in conductors with open [quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D)] sheets of Fermi surface. These 1D -> 2D dimensional crossovers lead to delocalization of wave functions and are responsible for angular magnetoresistance oscillations. As an example, we show that suggested theory is in qualitative and quantitative agreements with the recent experimental data obtained on (TMTSF)2ClO4 conductor.
Several experimental studies have shown the presence of spatially inhomogeneous phase coexistence of superconducting and non superconducting domains in low dimensional organic superconductors. The superconducting properties of these systems are found to be strongly dependent on the amount of disorder introduced in the sample regardless of its origin. The suppression of the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$ shows clear discrepancy with the result expected from the Abrikosov-Gor'kov law giving the behavior of $T_c$ with impurities. Based on the time dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory, w…
We present a heuristic, semiphenomenological model of the anomalous temperature (T) dependence of resistivity $ρ_{xx}$ recently observed experimentally in the quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) organic conductors of the (TMTSF)2X family in moderately strong magnetic fields. We suggest that a Q1D conductor behaves like an insulator ($dρ_{xx}/dT<0$), when its effective dimensionality is one, and like a metal ($dρ_{xx}/dT>0$), when its effective dimensionality is greater than one. Applying a magnetic field reduces the effective dimensionality of the system and switches the temperature dependence of resi…
The interference between spin-density-wave and superconducting instabilities in quasi-one-dimensional correlated metals is analyzed using the renormalization group method. At the one-loop level, we show how the interference leads to a continuous crossover from a spin-density-wave state to unconventional superconductivity when deviations from perfect nesting of the Fermi surface exceed a critical value. Singlet pairing between electrons on neighboring stacks is found to be the most favorable symmetry for superconductivity. The consequences of non uniform spin-density-wave pairing on the structu…
While the optical properties of the superconducting salt $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$NH$_4$Hg(SCN)$_4$ remain metallic down to 2 K, in the non-superconducting K-analog a pseudogap develops at frequencies of about 200 cm$^{-1}$ for temperatures T < 200 K. Based on exact diagonalisation calculations on an extended Hubbard model at quarter-filling we argue that fluctuations associated with short range charge ordering are responsible for the observed low-frequency feature. The different ground states, including superconductivity, are a consequence of the proximity of these compounds to a quantum phase charg…
We report measurements of the de Haas-van Alphen (DHVA) effect and AC susceptibility in the layered organic superconductor $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu(NCS)$_{2}$. The amplitude of the DHVA oscillations is attenuated over a wide field range above the irreversibility line, B_irr(B), below which a rigid flux lattice is formed. Thus the DHVA effect provides a unique probe of the superconducting fluctuations at high fields in this material. We compare our measurements with other determinations of the superconducting phase diagram of $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu(NCS)$_{2}$.
We review the current understanding of superconductivity in the quasi-one-dimensional organic conductors of the Bechgaard and Fabre salt families. We discuss the interplay between superconductivity, antiferromagnetism, and charge-density-wave fluctuations. The connection to recent experimental observations supporting unconventional pairing and the possibility of a triplet-spin order parameter for the superconducting phase is also presented.
Superconductivity of quasi-one-dimensional organic conductors with a quarter-filled band is investigated using the two-loop renormalization group approach to the extended Hubbard model for which both the single electron hopping t_{\perp} and the repulsive interaction V_{\perp} perpendicular to the chains are included. For a four-patches Fermi surface with deviations to perfect nesting, we calculate the response functions for the dominant fluctuations and possible superconducting states. By increasing V_{\perp}, it is shown that a d-wave (singlet) to f-wave (triplet) superconducting state cross…
Comparing resistivity data of quasi-one dimensional superconductors (TMTSF)_2PF_6 and (TMTSF)_2ClO_4 along the least conducting c*-axis and along the high conductivity a -axis as a function of temperature and pressure, a low temperature regime is observed in which a unique scattering time governs transport along both directions of these anisotropic conductors. However, the pressure dependence of the anisotropy implies a large pressure dependence of the interlayer coupling. This is in agreement with the results of first-principles DFT calculations implying methyl group hyperconjugation in the T…
It is the saturation of the transition temperature Tc in the range of 24 K for known materials in the late sixties which triggered the search for additional materials offering new coupling mechanisms leading in turn to higher Tc's. As a result of this stimulation, superconductivity in organic matter was discovered in tetramethyl-tetraselenafulvalene-hexafluorophosphate, (TMTSF)2PF6, in 1979, in the laboratory founded at Orsay by Professor Friedel and his colleagues in 1962. Although this conductor is a prototype example for low-dimensional physics, we mostly focus in this article on the superc…
Current experimental results suggest that some organic quasi-one-dimensional superconductors exhibit triplet pairing symmetry. Thus, we discuss several potential triplet order parameters for the superconducting state of these systems within the functional integral formulation. We compare weak spin-orbit coupling $f_{xyz}$, $p_x$, $p_y$ and $p_z$ symmetries via several thermodynamic quantities. For each symmetry, we analyse the temperature dependences of the order parameter, condensation energy, specific heat, and superfluid density tensor.
Using a renormalization group approach, we determine the phase diagram of an extended quasi-one-dimensional electron gas model that includes interchain hopping, nesting deviations and both intrachain and interchain repulsive interactions. d-wave superconductivity, which dominates over the spin-density-wave (SDW) phase at large nesting deviations, becomes unstable to the benefit of a triplet $f$-wave phase for a weak repulsive interchain backscattering term $g_1^\perp>0$, despite the persistence of dominant SDW correlations in the normal state. Antiferromagnetism becomes unstable against the fo…
We investigate ground state properties of a quasi-one-dimensional electron-lattice coupled model for quarter-filled molecular conductors. The effective one-dimensional extended Hubbard model coupled to adiabatic lattice degree of freedom is derived by the inter-chain mean-field approximation and solved by Lanczos exact diagonalization method. We find that the critical behavior among lattice tetramerized states with different charge-lattice ordered patterns is sensitively affected by the inter-chain Coulomb interaction, lattice anharmonicity, and intrinsic dimerization. This indicates a subtle …
HfTe3 single crystal undergoes a charge-density-wave (CDW) transition at TCDW = 93 K without the appearance of superconductivity (SC) down to 50 mK at ambient pressure. Here, we determined its CDW vector q = 0.91(1) a* + 0.27(1) c* via low-temperature transimission electron microscope and then performed comprehensive high-pressure transport measurements along three major crystallographic axes. Our results indicate that the superconducting pairing starts to occur within the quasi-one-dimensional (Q1D) -Te2-Te3- chain at 4-5 K but the phase coherence between the superconducting chains cannot be …
In the framework of the weak coupling renormalization group technique we examine the possible instabilities of the extended quasi-one-dimensional electron gas model with both intrachain and interchain electron-electron interactions, including the influence of umklapp scattering and the coupling of spins to a magnetic field. In the limit of purely repulsive intrachain interactions, we confirm the passage from singlet d-wave like superconductivity to an inhomogeneous FFLO state under magnetic field. The passage is accompanied by an anomalous increase of the upper critical field that scales with …
We report theoretical and experimental results on the transition metal pnictide WP. The theoretical outcomes based on tight-binding calculations and density functional theory indicate that WP is a three-dimensional superconductor with an anisotropic electronic structure and nonsymmorphic symmetries. On the other hand, magnetoresistance experimental data and the analysis of superconducting fluctuations of the conductivity in external magnetic field indicate a weakly anisotropic three-dimensional superconducting phase.
The interplay between dimensionality and various phases of matter is a central inquiry in condensed matter physics. New phases are often discovered through spontaneously broken symmetry. Understanding the dimensionality of superconductivity in the high-temperature cuprate analogue $-$ layered nickelates and revealing a new symmetry-breaking state are the keys to deciphering the underlying pairing mechanism. Here, we demonstrate the highly-tunable dimensionality and a broken rotational symmetry state in the superconductivity of square-planar layered nickelates. The superconducting state, probed…
A single Anderson impurity model recently predicted, through its unstable fixed point, the phase diagram of a two band model correlated conductor, well confirmed by Dynamical Mean Field Theory in infinite dimensions. We study here the one dimensional version of the same model and extract its phase diagram in this opposite limit of reduced dimensionality. As expected for one dimension, the Mott metal-insulator transition at half filling is replaced by a dimerized insulator-undimerized Mott insulator transition, while away from half filling the strongly correlated superconductivity for inverted …
A $^{13}$C NMR study of the normal and superconducting states of the all-organic charge-transfer salt $β"$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$SF$_5$CH$_2$CF$_2$SO$_3$ is presented. We find that the normal state is a charge-ordered metal configured as vertical stripes, produced by a combination of 1/4-filling, correlations, and a polar counterion sublattice. The NMR properties associated with the superconducting state are consistent with gap nodes and singlet pairing, and therefore similar to other organic superconductors. Quite distinct, however, is the absence of evidence for low-energy antiferromagnetic spin flu…
Effects of non-magnetic disorder on the critical temperature T_c and on diamagnetism of quasi-one-dimensional superconductors are reported. The energy of Josephson-coupling between wires is considered to be random, which is typical for dirty organic superconductors. We show that this randomness destroys phase coherence between wires and that T_c vanishes discontinuously at a critical disorder-strength. The parallel and transverse components of the penetration-depth are evaluated. They diverge at different critical temperatures T_c^{(1)} and T_c, which correspond to pair-breaking and phase-cohe…
We have investigated the electronic properties of SrFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ ($0\leqq x\leqq1$) single crystals with postannealing treatment and established a phase diagram of this system. The postannealing treatment reduced the residual resistivity in an antiferromagnetic-orthorhombic phase and enhanced the superconducting transition temperature to $T_{c, optimal}$=33\,K in the superconducting phase. The obtained phase diagram and electronic properties are similar to those of BaFe$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ despite the large difference in lattice constants. This indicates that, for supercond…
We study the Mott transition, antiferromagnetism and superconductivity in layered organic conductors using Cellular Dynamical Mean Field Theory for the frustrated Hubbard model. A d-wave superconducting phase appears between an antiferromagnetic insulator and a metal for $t^{\prime}/t=0.3-0.7 $, or between a nonmagnetic Mott insulator (spin liquid) and a metal for $t^{\prime}/t\geq 0.8$, in agreement with experiments on layered organic conductors including $κ$-(ET)$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$(CN)$_{3}$. These phases are separated by a strong first order transition. The phase diagram gives much insight into …
We report a complete analysis of the formal oxidation state of Co in NaxCoO2, in the interval 0.31<x<0.67. Iodometric titration and thermoelectric power confirm that a direct relationship between the Na content and the amount of Co 3 + cannot be established in this system. Creation of a significant amount of oxygen vacancies accompanies Na-ion deintercalation, keeping the formal Co valence at 3.45 + for x<0.45. To the light of new thermoelectric power data which reveals important differences between the hydrated (superconducting) and non-hydrated (non-superconducting) samples, we propose here …
We study a one-dimensional (1D) interacting electronic liquid coupled to a 1D array of classical magnetic moments and to a superconductor. We show that at low energy and temperature the magnetic moments and the electrons become strongly entangled and that a magnetic spiral structure emerges without any adjustable parameters. For strong enough coupling between the two, the 1D electronic liquid is driven into a topological superconducting phase supporting Majorana fermions without any fine-tuning of external parameters. Our analysis applies at low enough temperature to a quantum wire in proximit…
To understand the superconductivity recently discovered in Nd$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$NiO$_2$, we carried out LDA+DMFT (local density approximation plus dynamical mean-field theory) and magnetic force response calculations. The on-site correlation in Ni-$3d$ orbitals causes notable changes in the electronic structure. The calculated temperature-dependent susceptibility exhibits the Curie-Weiss behavior, indicating the localized character of its moment. From the low-frequency behavior of self-energy, we conclude that the undoped phase of this nickelate is Fermi-liquid-like contrary to cuprates. Intere…
We report on dc and microwave experiments of the low-dimensional organic conductors (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ and (TMTSF)$_2$ClO$_4$ along the $a$, $b^{\prime}$, and $c^*$ directions. In the normal state of (TMTSF)$_2$PF$_6$ below T=70 K, the dc resistivity follows a power-law with $ρ_a$ and $ρ_{b^{\prime}}$ proportional to $T^2$ while $ρ_{c^*}\propto T$. Above $T = 100$ K the exponents extracted from the data for the $a$ and $c^*$ axes are consiste1nt with what is to be expected for a system of coupled one-dimensional chains (Luttinger liquid) and a dimensional crossover at a temperature of about 100…
We study theoretically the electron transport in a 1D conductor adiabatically connected to a superconducting and normal metal leads. In the case of non-interacting we show that ac voltage applied along with dc voltage modifies I-V curve resembling a regime of photon-assisted tunneling. We obtain in the limit of low voltages, that the electron-electron interaction affects electronic transport resulting in a decrease of conductance and features in the frequency dependence of the impedance.
We theoretically investigate the interplay between charge ordering and magnetic states in quasi-one-dimensional molecular conductors TMTTF$_2X$, motivated by the observation of a complex variation of competing and/or coexisting phases. We show that the ferroelectric-type charge order increases two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin correlation, whereas in the one-dimensional regime two different spin-Peierls states are stabilized. By using first-principles band calculations for the estimation for the transfer integrals and comparing our results with the experiments, we identify the controlling…
In most unconventional superconductors, like the high-Tc cuprates, iron pnictides, or heavy fermion systems, superconductivity emerges in the proximity of an electronic instability. Identifying unambiguously the pairing mechanism remains nevertheless an enormous challenge. Among these systems, the orthorhombic uranium ferromagnetic superconductors have a unique position, notably because magnetic fields couple directly to ferromagnetic order, leading to the fascinating discovery of the re-emergence of superconductivity in URhGe at high field. Here we show that uniaxial stress is a remarkable to…
The d-wave pairing correlations along with spin correlation are calculated with quantum Monte Carlo method for the two-dimensional Hubbard model on lattice structures representing organic superconductors $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$X and (TMTSF)$_2$X. In both cases the pairing correlations for superconducting order parameters with nodes are found to be enhanced. The symmetry and the enhancement of the pairing is systematically correlated with the spin structure factor, suggesting a spin-fluctuation mediated pairing. We have further found that, as we deform the Fermi surface to make the system approach t…
A general nonperturbative theory of the low-energy electron propagator is developed and used to calculate the single-particle density of states in a variety of systems. This method involves the decoupling of the electron-electron interaction through a Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation, followed by a saddle-point approximation of the remaining functional integral. The final expression is found to be the tunneling analog of the infrared catastrophe that occurs in the x-ray edge problem; here, the host system responds to the potential produced by the abrupt addition of an electron during a tunn…
The interplay between antiferromagnetic interaction and hole motion is capable of inducing intriguing conducting topological Haldane phases described by a finite non-local string order parameter. Here we show that these states of matter are captured by the one dimensional $t-J_z$ model which can be experimentally realized with dressed Rydberg atoms trapped onto a one dimensional optical lattice. In the sector with vanishing total magnetization exact Bethe ansatz calculations associated to bosonization technique allow to predict that both metallic and superconducting topological Haldane states …
I study cross dimensionality of $p$-orbital atomic fermions loaded in an optical square lattice with repulsive interactions. The cross-dimensionality emerges when the transverse tunneling of $p$-orbital fermions is negligible. With renormalization group analysis, the system is found to support two dimensional charge, orbital, and spin density wave states with incommensurate wavevectors. The transition temperatures of these states are controlled by perturbations near a one dimensional Luttinger liquid fixed point. Considering transverse tunneling, the cross-dimensionality breaks down and the de…
The large charge-transfer anisotropy of quasi-one- and quasi-two-dimensional crystalline organic metals means that magnetoresistance is one of the most powerful tools for probing their bandstructure and interesting phase diagrams. Here we review various magnetoresistance phenomena that are of interest in the investigation of metallic, superconducting and charge-density-wave organic systems.
